To celebrate the arrival of their brand new record, Embody, Hamilton’s Basement Revolver have unveiled the final single, ‘Dissolve’. We previously described how the album displays a “willingness to confront the intricacies of modern life with a newfound steel and depth,” and the new single is full of the compassion and solidarity which makes this possible. Carli & The Dark – Voicemail

Carli & The Dark is the folk rock project of Phoenix-born, Brooklyn-based songwriter Carli Naff. Latest single ‘Voicemail’ concerns losing a parent, specifically that strange half second when the urge to contact them arises out of well-worn habit, a wish to share a simple moment of a day. The song emerges from this brief period where they are still alive, still waiting, and follows it through the renewed sense of loss before culminating in a compassionate group refrain which features Naff’s mother and siblings among other loved ones. “All my peeps who grieved together,” as she puts it. “It’s a little detail that really brings me a sense of safety at the end, of being held.”

Cinder Well x Jim Ghedi – I Am a Youth That’s Inclined to Ramble

Cinder Well and Jim Ghedi have teamed up for a new two-song single, reinterpreting traditional folk ballads. ‘I Am a Youth That’s Inclined to Rambled’ highlights how the pair accentuate the stark loneliness of the material with sparse arrangements haunted by foreboding drone. A song of vast distances and separation, sung into a soundscape as empty and inscrutable as the ocean itself.

I Am a Youth That’s Inclined to Ramble is out now via Free Dirt Records and is available from the Cinder Well Bandcamp page.

hemlock – to carry (feat. Laith)

Described as an “interstate phone-fi bedroom folk saga of sorts,” talk soon is the full-band Chicago-based project hemlock. Latest single invites long-time friend and collaborator Laith Scherer and explores the nuances of a relationship as it changes over time and distance. A song of hushed yet heartfelt vignettes which rises toward an impassioned finale, providing snapshots of love in its various guises.

Jeremy Squires – Drift

We’ve written about North Carolina native Jeremy Squires numerous times, an artist working in the American songwriting tradition of sharing heart and soul with generous helpings of grit and honesty. Ahead of a new album, slated for release later this year on Blackbird Record Label, Squires has unveiled a new single, ‘Drift’. It’s a song that finds him at his devastating best, built on just acoustic guitar, harmonica and vocals that quaver with both exhausted despondency and a steely inner strength. “I was sad,” he sings, “Now I’m lost / I forgot where I belong.”

Knuckle Pups – Soft Attraction

Ahead of their upcoming album, TV Ready, Denver “soda punk” outfit Knuckle Pups have unveiled single ‘Soft Attraction’. The track is an encapsulation of what such a genre entails, taking the fizzy energy of indie and adding an anarchic punk edge, though the songs are far from one-dimensional sugar rushes. Principle songwriter Oliver Holloway writes songs spread across the gamut of moods and tones, making room for earnest emotion and ironic playfulness within the same track, and as the new single shows, this often builds into triumphantly cathartic crescendos.

TV Ready is set for release sometime later this year.

Mouse – Pinned To An Avalanche

Based between Sunshine Coast and Brisbane, Mouse formed over a mutual appreciation of noisy DIY music, and thus set about making it themselves. The first single from forthcoming debut Here Was Then on Kitty Records, ‘Pinned to an Avalanche’ is all about escaping worry and doubt through some larger, consuming present, and Mouse oblige by recreating the descending wall of snow with their dense and hefty sound. Check out the video directed by the band and shot by Harley Jones:

Here Was Then will be released by Kitty Records later this year.

nudista – inasmuch

Next month sees the release of nudista’s Halfway Here EP on Sad Club Records, but in the meantime they have unveiled a new standalone single, ‘inasmuch’. The song is a great introduction to Pilar Matji Cabello and Robbie Carman’s work, a clarified dream pop which seeks to communicate directly and honestly. “It is a message to say that we are capable of evolving and moving forward even when it is scary,” as Cabello puts it, the gentle rhythmic pull drawing the listener close and compelling them onward.

Oceanator – Bad Brain Daze

April sees the return of Oceanator with Nothing’s Ever Fine, a brand new album on Polyvinyl Records and Big Scary Monsters which looks to build upon the apocalyptic themes of 2020’s Things I Never Said. Lead single ‘Bad Brain Daze’ typifies the duality of tenuous optimism and crushing pessimism which marks the record. The sound of existing within an unfolding disaster where the conclusion is still unclear, and nevertheless delivered with Elise Okusami’s characteristically triumphant energy. Sonic Løland – Up to You

Norwegian musician Anders Løland spent much of 2020 experimenting with styles and sounds, building up a library of ideas and demos which would form the basis of And Then The Sun Came Up, the debut album of his Sonic Løland project. Due for release this autumn via Koke Plate, the album shows off the full spectrum of Løland’s inspiration, creating a new brand of indie folk with ambient styles, electronic drums and rich 60s sensibilities, as shown by lead single, ‘Up to You’.

And Then The Sun Came Up will be released by Koke Plate this coming autumn.

Stephen Durkan – Prayer

Combining spoken word with electronic and ambient styles, Glasgow’s Stephen Durkan seems the latest in a long line of cynical Scottish preachers, bitter and sardonic yet bursting with a verbal energy. Written in collaboration with multi-instrumentalist/producer Niko O’Brien and released via Upcycled Sounds Records, his debut EP The Stories We Tell Ourselves About Ourselves both confirms and subverts this label. The anger and frustration are palpable, but beneath this lies something else. A flimsy belief in the continued value of critiquing the society in which we find ourselves, in imagining something new. Teen Idle – Burning

The music of Teen Idle might be an almost entirely solo endeavour recorded in a New Jersey basement, but you’d never guess it from the sound. For Sara Abdelbarry rejects the lo-fi aesthetics of many garage and bedroom acts for something more full-bodied. Take latest single, ‘Burning’, its rich sound featuring electric guitar, bass guitar, keys, synth, shaker, maracas, claps, lighter and sound effects all played by Abdelbarry, with only the drums delegated to Danny Murray. What emerges is an examination of unrequited love in all of its vivid detail, hope, bitterness and unabashed emotion rising into a huge climax.

Jeremy was kind enough to answer some questions on the record, so read on for a more in-depth discussion on its creation, themes and the role of art in these unusual times.

Your new album, Many Moons, has been out a couple of months now. How has the experience been? Is it strange releasing an album in such a tumultuous time?

It has been different but it has also been cool to see artists / fans from everywhere come together and support each other. Even though there has been so much going on… music is something that will always be here and can help. I think music is really important now probably more than ever. Not being able to tour or play shows has made life more difficult but I love the fact that I can release a lot of music during this time and more people will hear it and connect.

What is Many Moons about? Are there themes that run through the album?

With Many Moons I experimented with different tunings and synth sounds, which resulted in the overall different feel of the album. Even though it is in some ways a departure it still has a familiar sound that I always hope to capture.

I feel like Many Moons covers a lot of relatable topics such as grief, loss, stress, mental illness and change, among other themes. I think it’s an important album and even though it was written and recorded before the pandemic and this very important fight for racial equality and civil rights, I hope it speaks volumes to people and conveys a hopeful narrative.

There’s a noticeable difference in sound compared to previous albums, particularly with the use of synths and electronics on tracks like ‘Hazy’. What inspired you to take that route?

Well, to be completely honest I felt bored and I was feeling burnt out. I wanted to expand beyond the “folk/Americana/singer-songwriter” borders. I wanted to write something special, emotional and dreamy. Many Moons is what came out of that. I don’t ever write with a concept in mind. Sometimes it comes out (lyrically) in pieces and I have to figure out what and where certain things are coming from. It’s like therapy or a puzzle… I like the listener to create their own narratives and take what they will from what I have written. I use a lot of metaphor in my lyrics but yet I still try to express a reality to the listener. I write purposely in a way that the listener can get their own deeper meaning from the songs and still relate.

Loss and grief seem to be recurring themes in a lot of your music, and I’m interested in how making music has helped you cope. Is making music something that has helped you overcome the difficult moments in your life?

It is definitely cathartic for me as a songwriter once the song is finished and I can release it and / or play it for people. It is therapy for me.

I love to see and hear the listers reactions and interpretations of my songs. Writing and making music have helped me overcome so much in my life. I am very grateful.

As a follow-on from the last question, what would you say to anyone reading this who is going through similar issues?

Just keep moving.

But despite the heavy subject matter, to me Many Moons is one of your brighter albums. Is that something you agree with? Was that a conscious effort, or just how the songs came out?

I 100% agree with you there. Honestly it was a little bit of both. I never dive into any project with a concept in mind. I like the music to take shape organically. This album is very special to me and I knew I wanted it to have a positive/more brighter feel.

Finally, this has been a difficult year for almost everyone, with the pandemic and elections and such. What role do you believe art/music plays in these strange and uncertain times?

I believe that art/music will continue to bring us together and help us cope in different ways. It helps us to get out of our heads and open up and connect with each other and bring visions and dreams to life.

The song was the result of a moment of sudden inspiration. “I had a guitar riff that I was messing around with the day before this track was recorded,” Squires describes. “A good friend of mine that I hadn’t seen in years called me up and asked if I’d like to come over and jam. We just pressed record and I started playing the riff and he played drums. I went home and I played bass to it, wrote the lyrics and recorded them all that same night.”

Squires says the song is “about saying goodbye or not having a proper goodbye or closure,” and like much of his music has deep religious undertones. The lyrics are relatively minimal and opaque, shrouding the track in a sense of mystery as Squires addresses an unknown “you.” Fittingly, this is not one of Squires’s straight folk songs, but rather a slow and weighty slice of Americana, thick with a sense of consequence and regret.

The single comes complete with a video, shot and edited by Squires himself, which he says the feelings of “decay, abandonment and unanswered questions,” that permeate the song. Check it out below.

The second release is the self-explanatory A Collection of Covers, a mini-album of other people’s songs Squires has recorded over the past few years. He’s chosen wisely, with songs from legends such as Jason Molina, Damien Jurado, Bonnie “Prince” Billy and Pedro the Lion, all of whom have discernible influence on Squires’s music. There is also a take on Nirvana’s ‘Heart Shaped Box’, the achingly emotive ‘Rust or Gold’ by Jill Andrews, and ‘The Bluebird of Happiness’ by Lotte Kestner, the latter opening in twinkling glockenspiel before the entrance of Squires’s comparatively gruff vocals and smoothly emotive piano.

They are songs linked not by sound but a common feeling, something that can be traced back to Squires’s own work. As he puts it, “the song has to feel like I could’ve written or something I wished I had written and hit me like a ton of bricks.”

Poem comes out this Friday (17th May), and today we have the pleasure of hosting the whole thing in full a few days ahead release. For anyone unfamiliar with Jeremy Squires, Poem is a good introduction to his heartfelt and emotionally wrought folk music. The music acts as a vehicle that delivers Squires’s explorations of life, love and death with maximum unpretentious emotional heft. “Poem is a collection of songs that tell a story” he describes. “My personal poetry set to music that document changes in my life as well as my loved ones.”

The album opens with the stirring strings and poignant piano of ‘What Could I Say?’, an instrumental intro that brings to mind Cloud Cult‘s brand of hopeful melancholy. The first track proper, ‘Somersault’ sees a return to the familiar blueprint of guitar and Squires’s gruff but earnest vocals. It’s a song about trying to deal with anxiety in a number of ways, Squires listing medications—Xanax and Risperdal and Depakote—as well as the reassurance of a loved one.

All twelve songs on Poem riff on this basic formula, Squires not content to make a basic guitar + vocals folk album. Instead he ventures into rock, country and elegant string-based compositions, capturing that complex cocktail of emotions that comes with the ups and downs of life. This may have something to do with his creative process. “When I’m working on an album I purposely don’t listen to anything ‘folky’ or anything that could be similar to my style,” he says. “That way I feel like what I’m playing is coming from a deeper place and not affected by other artists.”

“Your head is so heavy, it’s hanging like the moon tonight,” begins ‘Orchid’, the first of several songs about a moment of personal tragedy as Squires and his wife lost a baby. Andrew Joslyn + Passenger String Quartet provide a bittersweet romantic melancholy with violin, viola and cello, as Squires explores what he describes as “the mental and physical anguish that affected both of us” with bravery and directness. Elsewhere, ‘Ascending’ is a folk-rock ballad built on piano, while ‘A Calm Around’ sees Squires’s wife Shelley Ann Squires harmonize on vocals in a landscape of gathering shadows and post-rock drums.

Whit Wright’s pedal steel adds to the sense of elegiac nostalgia on ‘Golden’, a song Squires says is about “nearing forty and going back to the places of my youth and seeing how much everything has changed,” and ‘Heaven’ is what initially seems a lonely folk song elevated by strings and honest sentiment. ‘Gift’ closes the album, a track we described previously as “at once grandiose and melancholy […] but actually a heartfelt and tender love song, the titular gift revealing itself to be a person the narrator is very grateful for.” In this way, the album comes full circle from ‘Somersault’, the grief and pain and loss that comes in between making the human connection all the more precious.

We’re therefore excited to hear that Jeremy has a new album on the way. Entitled Poem, the record doesn’t have a release date yet, but we’ve already had a taste with the first single ‘Somersault’, which was unveiled recently over at Adobe and Teardrops.

Now Squires has released Poem‘s second single, ‘Gift’, and an accompanying video, which premiered recently on One Chord To Another. The song retains Squires’s trademark stark and emotive writing, backing it with sombre piano and stirring strings, resulting in something that’s at once grandiose and melancholy. But despite that description, it’s actually one of the most positive songs I’ve heard Jeremy write. It’s a heartfelt and tender love song, the titular gift revealing itself to be a person the narrator is very grateful for.

Jeremy was kind enough to answer some questions about the new record, and offers some great insights into the motivations, inspirations and ambitions behind his music.

Hi Jeremy, good to speak to you again. How is life now that your latest album, Collapse, has been out in the world for a few months?

Hey, good to speak to you too! Things have been going pretty great. I got married about two weeks before the album came out and life has been beautiful. I’ve been spending time this Summer with my new wife and my kids, playing a few one off shows and I have been writing a new album.

The album is obviously deeply personal, with lots of it’s themes rooted in your own experiences. Is it a cathartic experience writing these songs? And how does it feel baring all of these real emotions to the world in your art?

Yes, it is very therapeutic at times (while writing them). However, once I’m completely finished with the songs often times they take on a new meaning and it is a relief to be done with it. Even though my songs are written from my personal experiences I write in a way that the listener can paint their own picture of what the songs are about and relate to it either directly or to what they portray in their mind that relates to their own experiences.

Kind of linked to the previous question – do you ever stop and consider the impact the songs will have on the listeners? Do you ever stop and consider the dual healing effects of art, how the sharing of your own struggle and pain might help ease that of others?

Yes, I definitely do. Although, when I’m writing the songs I’m really just in a certain state of mind at that particular moment. I am just feeling it out and telling a story. I like to be brutally honest but draw a narrative that sounds good. That being said with art in general everybody sees, hears and feels something different. I hope that by sharing my personal experiences and by attempting to make something beautiful out of it that people can find peace in their own struggles.

On a (final) related note, much of the album deals with troubles arising from addiction. Would you feel comfortable in offering any words of advice or consolation to anyone who might be going through (or watching a loved one go through) similar issues?

From my own personal experience. I would say you have to help yourself. Don’t enable the person who is an addict. They have two choices: To seek help or let the addiction win. You are not responsible or at fault for the choices that they make. I say this with the deepest compassion and respect.

While perhaps not one of the primary themes, religion is a thread that runs through the album, especially on tracks such as ‘Remnants’. I guess this isn’t an easy question to answer, but what’s your relationship to all that stuff, and how does it impact upon your music?

This is a great question. I very often use religious undertones and metaphor throughout all of my albums. I was raised by my Grandmother who is a devout Christian. (Crosses on the walls, religious artwork, etc… I try to paint a vivid picture of where I was raised and the home where she still lives in some of my songs) She is one of the strongest, most hard working and kindhearted people that I’ve ever known. I have gone back and forth throughout my life with what I believe to be true. However, I am a very spiritual person and even though I don’t follow the tradition and beliefs of Christianity I find the stories and iconography very interesting and compelling. It plays a huge role in my music and writing because it is one of the important things that inspire me.

There are several great guest musicians on the album, such as Heather McEntire of Mount Moriah and Shane Leonard of Field Report / Kalispell, How have you made this network of collaborators, and what effect do they have on your creative process?

I am a huge fan of Mount Moriah, Field Report and Kalispell. Mount Moriah live here in North Carolina as well. I’ve been a fan of Heather’s work for years. I reached out to Heather because I thought she would add something special/different to the songs. I was so happy that she sang on this album. I’ve known Shane Leonard for a while and he has worked with me before on the album When Will You Go… (2013) I asked him to play on a few songs on Collapse and I was very pleased. I also asked my friend Sean Husick to play drums and bass on the first track titled ’58’. I meticulously choose who I want to be a part of my records. Heather, Shane and Sean each brought something unique to the songs and it helped to shape them into something special . A perfect example is how Shane played on the songs ‘Fall on Me’ and on ‘Gemini’ it helped to make the album sound more sparsely layered, atmospheric and come together as a whole.

What are your plans now that Collapse has been out in the world for a while? Are you writing (or at least thinking about) new music? Does it take a while to get over creating something like this?

I am currently planning a southeast tour this Fall. I have been working on a new album and writing new songs. I am always writing in some way and I always have a song or idea in my head.

And finally, our usual closing question. Could you name a few bands/artists you’ve been listening to lately?

Lately I’ve been listening to Angel Olsen, Heather Woods Broderick, Beach Slang, William Tyler, Eric Bachmann, Phil Cook and Kurt Vile to name a few.
