The foundations of Old Man of the Woods‘ new album Cape Perpetua were established with 2025 LP Tendrils, a record we described as offering “its own form of transubstantiation, taking a desire which might otherwise appear absurd and changing it into something charged and devotional.” Cape Perpetua sees Seattle-based Miranda Elliott delve further into this style, pairing what she describes as ‘ambient incantations’ with equally otherworldly visual accompaniments. “[The record] sees her embrace aesthetics both religious and ecological to push their ambient avant-pop into an increasingly sacred terrain,” we wrote in a preview, with opener and single ‘Edges of Pleasure’ introducing the meditative depth of such a concept. “A song of swirling layers which draws on the choral accumulation of Gregorian chants,” as we continued, “to conjure something that’s at once otherworldly and fundamentally present.”

“Each begins with a poem, written last spring during a tumultuous period that left me spinning with no center,” Elliott explains. “Through the practice of sonically circling and weaving in each new line, I reached this trance state, constructing a new axis within myself. My aim is to extend that sonic embrace outward now, inviting audiences into a shared space of resonance and presence.” The songs employ a certain minimalism, especially in their beginnings, though as a means rather than an end. As though by stripping down the present into an ascetic simplicity, Old Man of the Woods is able to push through into another world entirely. ‘Don’t Touch, I’m Shedding’ is a good example, its hushed, swirling sound first playing as a kind of clearing, but at some point switches towards the opposite, repopulating the new space so that it might become an ecosystem of its own.

Cape Perpetua by Old Man of the Woods

Whether this process is spiritual, ecological or personal is left unclear, or more specifically, Elliott blurs any boundaries between such categories into insignificance. Indeed, this could be said to be the core mission of Cape Perpetua, and even the Old Man of the Woods project as a whole. An attempt to recharge the natural with its ethereal potential, and to reconsider the human interior as its own fertile space. The accompanying videos further ground these ideas, the often surreal footage quite literally superimposing ecological environments with imagery of religious belief. The result, much like the symbols of cathedrals, stained glass and solemn chants which Elliott draws upon, feels like its own contribution to an age old project. The ongoing ritual desire to recreate the sense of wonder which we sense around us, be it pertaining to God or His green world.

Cape Perpetua is out now and available from the Old Man of the Woods Bandcamp page.

Abbey Blackwell – Rise and Set

“Rise in the west, set in the east / do what I want, go where I please / just gravity keep holding me.” So sings Abbey Blackwell on ‘Rise and Set’, the lead single from the Seattle-based artist’s forthcoming album Dream a Day. Emerging from the aftermath of a relationship, the song is at once playful and heartbroken, existing in that disorienting space where everything you thought you knew is upended and you are left to hope at least physics will hold true. The arrangement is built to support Blackwell’s distinctive vocals, building from acoustic beginnings into something far richer with the help of Norman Robbins (electric guitar, lap steel) and Evan Woodle (drums, percussion). The result transforms a decidedly personal experience into something universal.

DoYeon Kim – The Beats of Distant Thunder

It is telling that Brooklyn-based composer, improvisor and vocalist DoYeon Kim is one of, if not the only, Gayageum player within contemporary music. Her embrace of the centuries-old Korean zither within her boundary-pushing work is indicative of Kim’s willingness to harness both cultural traditions and cutting edge vision in order to bring to life her singular sound. Her first release as a bandleader, forthcoming album Wellspring is an encapsulation of this spirit and sign of its radical potential. Because, with Tyshawn Sorey (drums), Henry Fraser (double bass) and Mat Maneri (viola) in support, the record sees Kim utilise these sensibilities to create something of a sonic manifesto. A desperate, timely plea for humanist connection within an otherwise fractured world. “This is the first time I open my hand to the world, a first greeting,” Kim explains. “I wish people hearing this music [receive] energy and comfort. I want to be there with them.” Listen to first single ‘The Beats of Distant Thunder’ now:

Mudgoose – Yum Cha Takeover

The recording project of Te Whanganui-a-Tara/Wellington-based songwriter Fletcher Ng, Mudgoose put out album Chasing Horse a few weeks ago, introducing a sound that sits somewhere in the middle grounded between slowcore, bedroom pop and alt-country, with sprinklings of a slacker vibe thrown in for good measure. Recorded to tape with a Tascam 4-track, the songs are textured, hazy and patient, delivered as though through the fog of memory and further clouded by a drink or two. Single ‘Yum Cha Takeover’ is a good place to dive in, the opening so slow its almost sedated, the vocals emerging from beneath these rhythms with what might be resignation or desperation. “[The] lyrics are loosely based on an embarrassing moment in which I screamed at a group of strangers to get out of my kitchen during a party,” Ng explains, though the resulting track is by no means a funny anecdote. More a murmured plea from the end of a rope, one last attempt to communicate something before fatalism settles for good.

Otracami – Perfect Reach

We’ve featured a couple of singles from Otracami‘s new album Runoff in recent months, first ‘Please‘ back in January then ‘Sirens’ a few weeks later. Taking the story of Persephone from Greek myth, the latter saw Camila Ortiz weave “mythic elements with personal reflection,” we wrote, asking “How far do the obligations of loyalty extend? […] When you are linked to a person involved with something bad, how much responsibility are you expected to take?” With the album coming this week via Figure & Ground, Otracami is back with ‘Perfect Reach’. A song written during a winter School of Song class with Adrianne Lenker and partly inspired by the novel Our Share of Night by Mariana Enriquez, it sees Ortiz lean into a darker, almost threatening atmosphere. “I was writing in a way that was less directly narrative and more vibes-based, using images, feelings, textures,” she explains, though a narrative thrust is implied by the very mood. A certain sense of guilt, even villainy marks the shadowed sound. The sensation of having committed a regretful act and having to acknowledge the fact.

Ramsey Thornton – Rocking

Back in October, we featured ‘Riverside’, a single by Tulsa-based songwriter, banjoist, and drummer Ramsey Thornton. It was released to announce his signing with the good folks at Gar Hole Records, and at the time we mentioned how a full-length record was in the pipeline. Well that time has now come. Titled I Called It! and set for release in May, the album collects 13 songs that perfectly introduce Thornton’s warm, down-to-earth sound. “I like my music to sound natural,” he describes. “These are songs that I wrote around my kitchen table. I recorded them with my friends. I hope they just sound like me.” New single ‘Rocking’ is a great example, Thornton’s fingerpicked guitar backed with drums, bass and lap steel to conjure something that feels both understated and emotionally deep.

I Called It! by Ramsey Thornton
I Called It! will be released via Gar Hole Records on 15th May. Pre-order it now from the Ramsey Thornton Bandcamp page.

runo plum – butterflies

Following on from 2025 full-length patching, an album we described as “equipped to elucidate the highs and lows of life,” Minneapolis songwriter runo plum is sharing brand new EP Bloom Again this May via Winspear. Released in support of an upcoming West Coast tour and SXSW, the EP sees plum expand upon her diaristic, emotionally-charged style, as introduced by lead single ‘butterflies’. “I showed you butterflies / You took ‘em in and burned them alive / In a house buried in smoke,” she sings in the song’s opening verse, “shoved myself to the ground to lay low.” The blunt, bleak lyricism is juxtaposed with the warm richness of the sound itself, the track playing like a confession or unburdening, runo plum unveiling all of her doubts and disappointments as though the only path to new growth is by clearing the ground.

Bloom Again by runo plum
Bloom Again will be released by Winspear on 8th May.

The Same Sky – Sad Songs

Montreal ‘outsider pop’ band The Same Sky have a new record, Haunting in the Mountains, on the way via Casa Joven. Following lead single ‘What’s Left’, which we described previously as “a track where dreamy textures meet an almost mechanical sense of forward motion,” the four-piece have now unveiled a second preview, titled ‘Sad Songs’. Existing at the heavier end of the post punk / shoegaze spectrum, the song is soaked in fuzz and noise, siren-like guitar riffs and violent percussion carrying the minimal lyrics toward something almost ritualistic. “The track moves through hypnotic repetition like a ritual, closer to a chant than a traditional song,” describes lead Joseph Simon. “Unless ‘traditional’ means a psychotic monk howling through a wall of distortion.”

Haunting in the Mountains by The Same Sky
Haunting in the Mountains comes out on 2nd April and is available to pre-order from Bandcamp.

This Lonesome Paradise – Unending

When previewing This Lonesome Paradise‘s upcoming release Death Motels back in January, we described how the album “position[s] the project as one working slightly outside of time with a sound that conjures a mythic past while always facing forwards.” Following on from single ‘Changelings’, what we called a “brooding, Lynchian number as dark as the night itself,” This Lonesome Paradise have shared new single ‘Unending’ to celebrate the release of the record. Another shadowy slice of desert rock which plays as something both stark and romantic, the cinematic sound and E Ray Béchard’s pathos-filled vocals combining into an evocative picture of America. A landscape littered with broken dreams and unrealised futures, dark and dangerous and haunted by the ghosts of all that was sacrificed to establish itself upon the world.

Thomas Dollbaum – Dozen Roses

Born in Tampa and now based in New Orleans, songwriter Thomas Dollbaum has put out several releases in recent years, 2022 LP Wellswood and 2025 EP Drive All Night, though grew frustrated with the slow process as recording was hampered by a variety of factors. For latest album Birds of Paradise, coming this May on Dear Life Records, Dollbaum was determined to buck this trend. After writing for no more than three months, he enlisted the help of most trusted collaborators Nick Corson, Josh Halper and MJ Lenderman and travelled to Dial Back Sound in Water Valley, Mississippi to work with producer/engineer Clay Jones. There, the album came to life in a handful of days, the recording process finally matching the urgency and charge that Dollbaum’s style of music demands. Lead single ‘Dozen Roses’ serves as a window into the album and its themes, tapping into the magic and beauty of the natural world to enliven personal memories, and ultimately displaying the lightning-in-a-bottle intensity these songs promise to bring.

David James Allen – By Your Side

“A song which shows how the age-old themes of work, loss and responsibility are as much a facet of contemporary folk as any other era.” That’s how we described ‘Platform No. 12 (Old Friends)‘ last summer, the first taste of David James Allen‘s forthcoming album Potpurri Jubilation. The Prince Edward County, Ontario-based songwriter and multi-instrumentalist “writes classic country songs,” as we continued, “full of aching longing, wistful reflection and undying hope, as well as a small cosmic twist,” and latest single ‘By Your Side’ further cements these sensibilities ahead of the album’s release later this year via Littleknown Records. “There’s something in the way that she loves me / that keeps me warm through the coolin’ of the night,” Allen sings in the opening lines, immediately pulling the listener into the warmth and fondness of the track. An ode to the safe harbour of a significant other, where calm might be found no matter how stormy the outside world might prove. Tune in and allow the pressures of work, money and self-doubt to dissolve, if only for a while.

By Your Side by David James Allen
‘By Your Side’ is out now and available from Bandcamp. Jubilation Potpourri will be released later in 2026 via Littleknown Records.

Fugue State – We Are Lasting

The new collaborative project fronted by Northampton, MA-based composer, producer and engineer Dan Langa, Fugue State refuses the typical distinction between solo project and traditional ensemble. An outfit which treats collaboration as its own form of compositional methodology, Langa practising what the press release describes as “an obsessive cultivation of studio recordings with a rotating cast of musicians, transformed into spectral, unrecognizable forms.” Released to celebrate signing with Switch Hit Records, and featuring vocalist Maia Friedman (Dirty Projectors, Coco) and VSF fav Erika Dohi on piano, single ‘We Are Lasting’ provides our first glimpse into this new world. The style draws on Langa’s wealth of experience across music, film and multimedia, as well as the sensibilities of its collaborators, though also follows the direction the present moment suggested. “That improvisation became the foundation, and we slowly built everything on top of it,” as Langa describes. “This was the first track that really found its identity, and I often found comfort in it during the creative process—whether for inspiration or just a moment to breathe.”

We Are Lasting by Fugue State
‘We Are Lasting’ is out now via Switch Hit Records and available from Bandcamp.

Gia Margaret – Everyone Around Me Dancing

“A picture of solitude not as some lonely retreat but rather the path towards recognising the wider connection of things. That sweet dark warmth of the whole world.” That’s how we described Gia Margaret‘s 2023 album Romantic Piano, a collection of careful, considered compositions which held a kind of melancholic curiosity for its surroundings. Now Margaret is gearing up to release her much anticipated follow-up, an album titled Singing coming via Jagjaguwar this spring, and opening track and lead single ‘Everyone Around Me Dancing’ suggests a continuation of such themes. The record might be the first to properly feature vocals since 2018’s There’s Always Glimmer (the consequence of illness, as we covered when reviewing Mia Gargaret), but it is far from a simple reversion to a previous mode of working. Rather, Margaret considers every lesson learnt through the difficult process, the resonance of every person she has ever been. The vocals might have returned, but Singing understands something greater. The voice is only part of who we are. There are deeper ways of communicating.

Little Lungs – The Heat

Little Lungs is a Baltimore folk rock project led by songwriter Leena Rhodes. With Brendan Russell (bass), Eli Simms (drums), Ricky Schwarzenberg (guitar) and an assembly of other friends and collaborators in support, Rhodes creates soundscapes inherently intimate yet often sweeping too. Songs personal, compassionate and often affirming, driven by equal parts warmth and energy. Next month, Little Lungs will put out the full-length album The Heat, and Rhodes and co. have shared the title track to establish the mood and themes of the record. A typically emotive track build around Rhodes’s vocals and the braid of tenderness and strength they are able to evoke. “Face down against the bed frame / You woke to the fire alarm,” she sings, in an opening snapshot that captures the vulnerability on display throughout.

Mary Ocher – The Narrative (First Movement)

“Has roots in the early twentieth century, both in terms of the minimalist sensibilities and the overarching themes, but it is impossible to think of the intra-war period of the 1900s without hearing ominous echoes of the present day.” So we wrote of Mary Ocher‘s forthcoming album Weimar back in January. The challenging, politically-charged album was introduced by lead single ‘The Dance’ (what we called “a mournful dirge for that which is slipping through our fingers”). And now Ocher has shared taut, plaintive new single ‘The Narrative (First Movement)’. Though it is perhaps the video which will earn the most attention. The expressionist piece is by Boris Eldagsen, one of the first ‘reputable’ artists to explore the possibilities of AI who nevertheless carries a strictly critical approach to the nascent medium (back in 2023 Eldagsen refused the Sony World Photography Award after winning for an AI-generated image). Whether this self-awareness might justify the use of such artistically disheartening technology is still very much in question, and personally we’d query whether the video achieves anything which might be unobtainable via more organic means, but if nothing else it fits into Ocher’s overall project in its willingness to push into uncomfortable places and ask the audience to examine exactly how they feel.

Miserable chillers – Bikeman

“I’ll be the bike, man / the basket and the bell / the breath before I fell / Open skin up to the air / my mouth to taste the day.” So sings Miguel Gallego in the opening lines of ‘Bikeman’, the delightfully smooth and strange introduction to Miserable chillers‘ latest album, Innocent victims, coming soon via Baby Blue. The New York-based composer and artist has covered plenty of ground with the Miserable chillers project over the years, moving from devotional to danceable and back again, or else occupying both moods simultaneously. But the uniting spirit across all releases has been one of curiosity, a mood delivered in sleek, eighties-adjacent pop that allows Gallego to push into surreal territory without losing an anchor to real life. With its anthropomorphic bicycle, ‘Bikeman’ might be the perfect encapuslation of the Miserable chillers aesthetic, and one which whets appetites for the full release.

Natalie Jane Hill – Colors

Natalie Jane Hill‘s forthcoming record Hopeful Woman is one of our most eagerly anticipated releases of the first half of this year. A collections of ten modest but supremely assured songs that explore love in its many facets. Hot on the heels of ‘Never Left Me’ and ‘I Thought Love Meant’, Hill has unveiled a third track, ‘Colors’ another richly imagined but still down to earth rumination on romance. “Simply put, ‘Colors’ is a love song- specifically about the beginning period of falling in love with someone,” Hill describes. “But it’s also about having a better understanding on personal boundaries and not losing yourself entirely in the potential of something new. It’s being able to enjoy the colorfulness of it, while leaving space for the mystery, too.” The song has a fittingly Spring-like feel, tender like new green shoots and ripe with a glorious sense of possibility.

Old Man of the Woods – Edges of Pleasure

Taken from the album Tendrils, Old Man of the Woods‘ most recent single ‘Meditation’ was “a self-described ‘breathy, minimal ritual'” as we wrote in 2025, “[a song] which performs its own form of transubstantiation, taking a desire which might otherwise appear absurd and changing it into something charged and devotional.” Miranda Elliott appears to have taken such a style to heart, because new album Cape Perpetua sees the Seattle-based artist embrace aesthetics both religious and ecological to push their ambient avant-pop into an increasingly sacred terrain. Elliott intends to release a track every week, building up to the full release in March, and opener and single ‘Edges of Pleasure’ highlights the meditative style. A song of swirling layers which draws on the choral accumulation of Gregorian chants to conjure something that’s at once otherworldly and fundamentally present.

Turner Cody – Recognize a Friend

In a present milieu where country songs are as likely to be about Disneyland and Pepsi as heartbreak and whiskey, St. Louis-based songwriter Turner Cody shows that the traditional and alt forms of the style can coexist. Out via Capitane Records, latest full-length Out for Blood has all the thematic concerns of the giants of the field, mining the American psyche to explore ideas of freedom and fate, individualism, sin and salvation in a way which would make Van Zandt proud. Yet, as songs like single ‘Recognize a Friend’ show, there’s a playfulness within his style too. An idiosyncrasy which, by way of Prine, allows Cody to sit as comfortably next to his alt-country contemporaries as the old masters. The narrative of the track is a familiar one. Ordinary man Billy finds himself gradually growing despondent as he drifts from youthful optimism into the doldrums of normal living. The personification of an entire demographic which finds itself slipping out of its countercultural pep.

The Yum Yum Tree – Shine

It has been nineteen years since Georgia-based indie rock outfit The Yum Yum Tree released their last album Paint By Numbers, a hiatus long enough to make even the most optimistic fans fear for the future of the project. After all, the band have other things to think about, not least lead Andy Gish who has spend over two decades as an ER nurse, as well as working in harm reduction. But good things come to those who wait, and this April will see The Yum Yum Tree return with brand new full-length Turn Down the Noise, an album which builds upon the foundations of its predecessor while proudly displaying the extra wisdom, self-awareness and emotional bravery which comes with near enough twenty years of living. Single ‘Shine’ embodies the spirit of the release, packing that nineties-flavoured indie rock punch while showing a newly unguarded, introspective personality. “Shine is about wanting something that doesn’t belong to you,” as Gish explains, “being able to sit with that and still wanting the best for them.” Watch the video directed by Katherine Lucas below:

Seattle‘s Corespondents have been together for over two decades now, honing and evolving an idiosyncratic, endlessly inventive sound that blends post-rock, psych and surf sensibilities. With little interest in playing the game demanded by the music industry (the in-joke that is the apparently misspelled band name is just the start of it), the outfit have intsead ploughed their own furrow, embracing a playful humour and uncategorisable style even if it condemns them to something of a cult, underground act. New album Exploding House, coming soon via Antiquated Future Records, does not betray any of these ideals, though might nevertheless just break Corespondents into the wider consciousness. Because, as single ‘Queen Nut’ shows, this is a release from a band at the height of their powers. An album clearly full of craft, vision and daring, but one which wears its ambition lightly. Corespondents are not here to bamboozle the listener into appreciation, but beckon with a laidback, oddball charm.

Erik Hall – Strumming Music (Charlemagne Palestine)

We’ve shared a couple of tracks from Erik Hall‘s Solo Three in recent months, the third and final part of a sequence of albums on which the Michigan-based composer and multi-instrumentalist reimagines contemporary classical pieces within his own minimalist vision. After ‘Music for a Large Ensemble‘ by Steve Reich and ‘A Folk Study‘ by Laura Spiegel, Hall has now shared a final single to celebrate the album’s release via Western Vinyl. ‘Strumming Music’ softens the idiosyncratic intensity of Charlemagne Palestine’s original without losing its spirit, blurring the edges into something meditative and enveloping.

Jackie West – Course of Action

Silent Century, the new album from Jackie West coming this February on Ruination Records, plays as something of a covnversation. A dialogue most personal, held between the West the artist and West herself, but also something wider. A polyphony featuring an untold number of perspectives which exists in defiance of years of gendered silencing, elevating the voices of those too often unheard to emerge as a kind of portrait of the feminine experience. Latest single ‘Course of Action’ embodies both the curiosity and ferocity which makes such a project possible. West not only fills the enforced gaps within the collective voice, but points to its enduring power. A warm tangle of guitars form the track’s texture, though it is driven forward by a kraut-adjacent beat, and together with the reharmonised chord which emerges in the back half, the sound gives the impression of something perpetual. As though Jackie West has not created a discrete song but tapped into something ever-present and without end.

June Swoon – Denver

“June Swoon is a true outlaw” explains the bio of the cult LA-based songwriter, an apt description for someone who fled the confines of a fundamentalist sect as a teen, escaping into the Southwestern desert and moonlighting as a touring musician while steadily building her own catalogue of work. After two self-produced albums, new EP Big Truck offers the new chapter of this burgeoning career, embracing the circumstances of its creation and channelling the sensation of being on the run, fighting the desire to look over your shoulder at everything you’ve left behind. Opening track ‘Denver’ is the ideal introduction to the spirit of the release, a track of equal parts wistful emotion and windows-down attitude which embraces it classic country roots unapologetically while also carving out a space for itself within the contemporary alt-country movement too.

Big Truck by June Swoon
Big Truck is out now and available from Bandcamp.

Sluice – Beadie

Formed by lead Justin Morris after becoming discouraged pursuing indie rock in New York, North Carolina‘s Sluice have made a name with a pair of celebrated albums, most recently 2023’s Radial Gate which we described as “follow[ing] the project name and doubles down on the imagery of water.” As we continued: “whether Morris is skimming along the surface or submerging himself in plunge pools, the lasting sense is that of control. For if life is a flowing river, Radial Gate represents an attempt to apply structures along its course so that we might more fully engage with the power and potential to be found therein.” Now Sluice are back with new album Companion on Mtn Laurel Recording Co., solidifying into a four piece with with Morris joined by Oliver Child-Lanning (bass, various other instruments), Avery Sullivan (drums) and Libby Rodenbough (fiddle). Lead single and album opener ‘Beadie’ sets the tone, a song about love and self-care which treats such subjects with an almost spiritual air, while still possessing an earnest, unguarded personability.

Taroug – 1995

The solo project of German–Tunisian drummer and electronic music producer Tarek Zarroug, Taroug blends digital and organic sounds to create conceptual soundscapes able to evoke the full richness of personal history. Named after the Chott El Djerid, a vast salt lake in southern Tunisia, latest album Chott is the perfect example of the style, blending a nostalgic, melancholic minimalism with moments of bright intensity. As single ‘1995’ highlights, Zarroug weaves personal features into these arrangements to further ground the themes of identity and memory. A song which reflects on his early childhood in Tunisia that is able to capture both the intimacy of fond experience and the expansive landscape within which it took place.

Van Chamberlain – Running Through the World

We’ve featured two singles from Van Chamberlain‘s new full-length As Far As the Eye Can See in recent months, the New York outfit scheduling the album as a waterfall release with a new song unveiled each month. First came ‘Miracle Drug‘, a track we called “decidedly bittersweet in nature, a nascent crush brought to life in all of its longing and shimmering potential. Where the line between melancholy and possibility is porous and the world itself feels new.” Then the more ruminative ‘Solutions‘, what we described as “a song delivered from the mire of the present, dreaming of a fresh start that’s not yet quite in reach and all the more alluring for it.” Now Van Chamberlain have returned with ‘Running Through the World’, and again the sense of possibility imbued with the sound is tangible. What the band call “an anthem of nonconformity” which chooses to pursue love and optimism regardless of how intent the world seems to be on erasing such things.

Running Through the World by Van Chamberlain
‘Running Through the World’ is out now via the Van Chamberlain Bandcamp page.

Where’s Beth – White Ants

Back in December we featured ‘Overtime Waltz‘, a single from Sarabeth Weszely’s Where’s Beth we described as “a festive offering that uses the pressures of the period to highlight chronic struggles and loneliness.” It turns out the single was the first from forthcoming new Where’s Beth album Ache Is A Cricket In The Night, and now Weszely has returned with opening track ‘White Ants’ to further introduce the release. Released in 2024, predecessor Bone Bone offered “a picture of domesticity in the weeks and days around marriage,” we wrote in our review, a sincere album which nevertheless still found “room for the peculiar and idiosyncratic details too.” The new album builds upon this style and expands its focus, drawing on apparently mundane moments from every day life to chart the universal experiences of love, grief and longing.

Ache Is A Cricket In The Night by Where’s Beth
Ache Is A Cricket In The Night will be released on the 6th March and you can pre-order it now.

Eli Carvajal – Forever

In recent months we’ve been following London-based songwriter Eli Carvajal as he prepares to release new full-length Eyen Forever in October via Safe Suburban Home Records. After singles like ‘Stretch Marks‘ (which “manag[es],” we wrote, “to evoke the ways in which love elevates the ordinary into something wonderful, and creates the possibilities of new myths and dreams before us”) and ‘Scar’ (“welcom[es] the audience into the mundane details of everyday existence in order to gesture towards themes more poignant and sweeping”), Carvajal has returned with the album opener, ‘Forever’. Another emotive, tender track, the song finds Carvajal at perhaps his most intimate, the arrangement stripped right back to its bare necessities and possessing the kind of wistful fondness only accessed when one finds themselves far away from home. As he explains: “‘Forever’ was inspired by my two years’ teaching English in Tokyo, Japan. In the song, I play with the language we use around romance, reframing love and loss with poignancy as well as humour.”

Eyen Forever by Eli Carvajal
Eyen Forever will be released on the 3rd October via Safe Suburban Home Records and you can pre-order it now.

Fulton Lights – Hold That Thought

Recording under the moniker Fulton Lights, Andrew Spencer Goldman last put out new music in 2018, when album Moonwalking into the Future highlighted the ambition and invention of his work. New EP Well the Night Has Come shows the hiatus has done nothing to dampen his creative energies. Take single ‘Hold That Thought’, a song concerned with the very process of making art in a world of distraction. Along with guests TJ Lipple (Aloha) on drums, John Davis (ex-QandNotU/Georgie James/Title Tracks/Paint Branch) on backing vocals and Tony Maimone (Pere Ubu) on percussion, Goldman crafts a sound layered and languid, though the laid-back rhythm belies the urgency and depth of feeling present in the delivery. Because this is a track about “trying to remain open to those moments where creativity is born,” as Goldman explains. “Capturing and releasing them before they dissipate. It can be an act of resistance against all of the things conspiring to distract.”

Well the Night Has Come by Fulton Lights
Well the Night Has Come will be released on the 7th November and you can pre-order it now.

Leilani Patao – Cut

Starting in 2021 at the tender age of seventeen, Brooklyn (via Los Angeles) based songwriter Leilani Patao put out a series of DIY self-releases, culminating in the acclaimed 2024 album But What If? which earned, among other things, a feature on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon. But despite this success, Patao grew disallusioned with the biz, not an unfamiliar story within a contemporary music scene which demands not only on hard work in an artistic sense but an even greater degree of effort (and luck) be spent on self-promotion, algorithmic appeasement and any number of equally soul-destorying things. Many criticize this system but few take concrete action against it, which makes Patao’s new EP daisy, forthcoming this autumn via Audio Antihero, all the more notable. A release which promises to shun streaming services, playlists and social media in order to focus on what really matters, and thus an experiment to judge what exactly is possible within the conditions of the twenty-first century. “Is it possible to share my music properly, pay everyone who was involved, get paid myself, and not have to interact with the many systems in place that make me dread music?” Patao asks. Lead single ‘Cut’ is out now for an early glimpse at a release we’re rooting for in more ways that one.

Cut by Leilani Patao
daisy will be released on the 7th November via Audio Antihero and you can pre-order it now.

Little Angry – Outerside

You might know Evan Hashi as part of acts like The Hive Dwellers, Mega Bog, Twig Palace and Flying Circles, but the Seattle-based songwriter and multi-instrumentalist has also long recorded under the moniker Little Angry, blending pop, punk and psych influences with an experimental, DIY spirit. Set for release next month via Antiquated Future Records, the fourth Little Angry album Screamin’ Inside Your Heart!!! is the first to see the project become a full band, and thus a slightly new name—Little Angry & The Sweets—though the spirit remains the same. With Jen Weisberg (bass guitar, vocals) and Joseph Kuta (guitar, vocals), Little Angry sound better than ever, Hashi using the album’s title (taken from COVID-era safety instructions provided to riders of roller coasters in Japan) to explore the idea of being a ‘good immigrant’ in the US, a notion reinforced through generations. Listen to opener and lead single ‘Outerside’ for an idea of the drama and playfulness of the record.

LUCKY – Olden Goldy

We’ve been following Bay Area supergroup LUCKY (that’s Half Stack‘s Peter Kegler and Andrew St James alongside Marika Christine and Zach Elsasser of Affectionately) in recent months as they gear up to release their self-titled album, with songs like ‘Friends‘ embodying the buoyant rhythm and wistful edge of the project. With the album out now via Royal Oakie Records, LUCKY have shared new single ‘Olden Goldy’ to win over anyone not yet on board. The album’s closer, the song encapsulates everything that makes the outfit so special. “Out in the big olive groves / where the warms wind blows / I’m a young man who’s getting old,” go the opening lines, though again the reflection of the lyrics and delivery is slightly at odds with the upbeat, swaggering style of the sound itself. As though understanding, for all of the slow realisations and dawning regrets, life will go on kicking yet.

Up in the lonely pines
the wind haunts my mind
I spent days just losing time.
The sky’s is getting long,
the night is looking cold
and I’m still a young man who’s getting old

But I can’t let go

Night Teacher – New Cage

Consisting of multi-media artist and singer-songwriter Lilly Bechtel and drummer, writer and producer Matt Wyatt, Night Teacher sits somewhere between indie rock, chamber pop and doom folk in its style, a sound tied together by Bechtel’s emotive, often haunting delivery. Ahead of new album Year of the Snake, coming this autumn via First City Artists, Night Teacher have shared new single ‘New Cage’. The song utilises the Charlottesville duo’s evocative and thoughtful style to meditate on pernicious influences of social media in contemporary culture, positioning such forces as a kind of imprisonment we enter on our own volition. “I was reading Naomi Klein’s brilliant book Doppelgänger, where she writes about the original surveillance system as the concept of God, which in many ways has been replaced by the concept of the idealized self,” Bechtel explains. “Social media may be doing a very old thing in a new way: getting people to run surveillance on themselves in order to become better commodities for the marketplace.”

Perish – God I’m Freaking Out

“A vivid slice of folk-inflected rock which sounds at once wistful and affirming, a combination which looks to be a signature of the Perish sound,” we wrote of single ‘Cool Guys‘ back in July when previewing Brooklyn outfit Perish‘s new self-titled album. “Because while [Katie] Callihan’s delivery is thoughtful, her lyrics probing beneath the surface of things, the sound retains an upbeat, exultant air. As though there’s some energy to be found in the act of being open and honest to the point of vulnerability.” With the record out now via Rue Defense, Perish have shared new single ‘God I’m Freaking Out’. The song started life as something of a slow ballad when Callihan was playing solo, but the new version is altogether different, the full band adding extra groove and charge to a track all about the push and pull of solitude in the face of stress.

Ribbon Skirt – LUCKY8

Principally consisting of Anishinaabe musician Tashiina Buswa and guitarist Billy Riley, Montreal’s Ribbon Skirt won acclaim earlier in the year with the release of their debut Bite Down on Mint Records, an album which explored ideas of memory and heritage with a raw, stark style of post-punk. Fast-forward a few months and Ribbon Skirt are back with PENSACOLA, a brand new EP intended as something of an epilogue to its predecessor. One which seems to exist in the wake of Bite Down, powered by the still-charged air and smouldering heat. Lead single ‘LUCKY8’ welcomes listeners into this space, a track of woozy layers and surreal, dreamlike imagery which nevertheless holds a pulsing urgency beneath the surface. Like a memory bathed in the feedback and distortion of time yet still possessing its serrated edge.

The Fire Talk imprint Angel Tapes has been unearthing emergent artists for a number of years now, introducing the likes of Retail Drugs and Jawdropped to audiences, and their latest addition Starcharm is another act you will want to get to know. Featuring Elena Buenrostro (vocals, guitar), Jasmin Feliciano (bass) and Amaya Peña (drums), the Chicago trio has risen from the ashes of Buenrostro’s defunct project Soft and Dumb with all the confidence and energy of new beginnings. Debut single ‘The Color Clear’ displays both pop and noise sensibilities, pairing off-kilter post punk vibes with a rising intensity so that everything feels a little odd and unreal. The song “is inspired by a time when I lost all faith in love and felt like men were seeing me as a projection instead of a real person,” Buenrostro explains. “I was going through a bit of nihilistic mania during this time which I think you can definitely hear. An avoidant attachment anthem if you will.”

Tiberius – Moab

With the release of new album Troubadour edging nearer via Audio Antihero, Boston farm emo band Tiberius have shared latest single ‘Moab’. After ‘Sag‘ and ‘Felt‘ introduced the conflicted, searching and cathartic style of the record (“ebbs and flows across its runtime,” we wrote of the former, “pulled in all directions by competing emotions. Uncertainty, doubt, desperation, a recurrent yet skittish determination to embrace some inner truth”) the new song highlights a different dimension. A track more farm than emo, leaning closer to alt country in its warm twang and compassionate delivery, though one no less cathartic for its more relaxed approached. “’Moab’ was a song I wrote about trying to let go. At the time I was defining myself by expectations of a strained relationship. I was feeling pretty insane—like the kind of insane you feel back in 8th grade where you come home crying all of the time because you have absolutely no sense of self,” explains lead Brendan Wright. “Writing ‘Moab’ offered catharsis. Looking back, I feel a lot of embarrassment around those feelings, but it was how I felt at the time and that was the place I was in. I wish I had acted differently, and I strive to now.”

Bouquet – Spellbreaker

Back in March we introduced Spellbreaker, the new full-length from LA pop duo Bouquet. Having not put out a record for a decade, the release sees interdisciplinary artist, writer and composer Carolyn Pennypacker Riggs and songwriter and producer Max Foreman evolve the project while staying true to its spirit, with singles ‘Hold On‘ and ‘Moon Was Made‘ showing off “a rich and romantic style,” as we put it, “that championed restraint within a genre often prone to excesses.” With the album now out, Bouquet have shared the title track—a song which confronts suffocating societal expectations, both in terms of their subliminal pull on us and the agency to be found in rejecting their logic.

Spellbreaker by Bouquet
Spellbreaker is out now and availble from Bandcamp.

Coral Grief – Rockhounds

Seattle trio Coral Grief are set to release their debut album Air Between Us this summer, a joint relase between Suicide Squeeze Records (digital), Anxiety Blanket Records (vinyl) and Den Tapes (cassette) which promises to represent a notable addition to the current dream pop revival. Because though the krautrock and synth pop styles underpinning the project might be drawn from the past, Coral Grief do so much more than peddle nostalgia. Rather, they take familiar sounds and recombine them into something entirely new, as displayed by lead single ‘Rockhounds’. It’s a track of ethereal tones and intricate detail built around a spine of sleek drum loops. The lyrics hint at the core themes of a release all about travel and exploration, championing not the productive gains of such things but rather the inherent value of the process. “I love beachcombing and searching for small treasures,” frontperson Lena Farr Morrissey explains. “This song is an ode to that process, especially when you don’t find anything but it was still worth the journey.”

Horsepower – Excalibur

Horsepower, the project of NYC songwriter Charlotte Weinman, is preparing to release a self-titled debut EP next month via Rose Garden, and Weinman has shared new single ‘Excalibur’ to introduce the release. Produced by brother Noah Weinman (of runnner fame), the song offers a glimpse at the heavier dimension of the Horsepower project, following the tender, dreamy tones of previous track ‘Are You Blushing?’ with something altogether more charged and raw. The result is both earnest in tone and inventive in execution, Weinman drawing on her background in theatre writing and performance to convey personal fury in an unapologetically heightened, dramatic register. “I grew up as a massive fan of Hole and Sleater-Kinney and Kim Gordon, and I’ve always generally had a huge attraction to women who are being serrated and disgusting with their language and presence,” Weinman explains, “and not aestheticizing their anger—“feminine rage” etc.—but expressing it with a critical mass of urgency and conviction to dress it up or perform it any other way.”

OK Cool – Waawooweewaa

Back in 2023 we wrote about Chicago-based project OK Cool, describing how album fawn saw duo Bridget Stiebris Haley Blomquist rise from “a rich lineage of forebears, from contemporary bedroom pop to Midwest emo and feedback-soaked shoegaze” while still “keeping things fresh and experimental.” Now OK Cool are preparing to release follow-up Chit Chat in August on Take A Hike Records, and lead single ‘Waawooweewaa’ suggests the album will build upon these foundations. It’s a track which combines emo confession with an infectious forward motion to create something genuinely cathartic despite its dark tone. “I wish I could say fuck it / and walk out into the lake,” as the final verse goes. “My entire life relies on being far away / i’m sorry, it’s my own fault.”

Paola Bennet – Landmines

Drawing on a mix of folk, pop and rock sensibilities, Boston-born, New York-based songwriter Paola Bennet is an artist unafraid of the personal, her music delving into intimate themes of illness, desire and relationships with equal parts tenderness and weight. Described as “agony put to sound,” new single ‘Landmines’ shows the full range of this style within a single track. An examination of a friendship conducted in its aftermath, where residual bitterness and burgeoning regret are matched with more complicated emotions. The identity-shaking experience of losing a person from your life when you had always imagined them a part of it. The poignant croon of the opening conjures the vulnerability of such a situation, and the gradual introduction of rock energy drives the track towards its fiercely cathartic climax.

We’ve featured a number of tracks from Soot Sprite‘s new full-length Wield Your Hope Like A Weapon in recent months, what we’ve called “a call to arms to fight against the forces that make contemporary life so difficult, and a reminder of the radical potential within empathy and community” that focuses on both a societal (on tracks like ‘All My Friends Are Depressed‘ and ‘Days After Days‘) and personal (‘Vicious Cycles‘) level. With the album now out via Specialist Subject Records, the trio have unveiled the title track to celebrate. A mission statement for the record and an embodiment of its cathartic defiance and determination. “As long as there’s blood in my body / I’ll never stop raging against the dark that’s gonna crush me,” as lead Elise Cook sings. “And as long as there’s air to breathe / I’ll do everything just to show you my teeth.”

Star Moles – Key Change

Recording under the moniker Star Moles, multi-instrumentalist Emily Moales has put out a wide range of releases since 2017, with a myriad of singles and covers sitting alongside full-lengths like Camelot, released via Earth Libraries. The oeuvre is a lesson in the potential of bedroom pop, refusing to settle for genre conventions to push the style in new directions. Again out via Earth Libraries, latest single ‘Key Change’ is a worthy addition to the catalogue. A track representative of Moales’s growing boredom with idealised romance of polished pop, choosing to instead get its hands dirty and dig into the messy guts of what love really means. The result is off-kilter and idiosyncratic and all the more believable for it, unfurling as a stream-of-consciousness with little filtered out.

Tyler Bradley Walker – Moon Broke Quiet

Perhaps best known as one half of electronic rock duo Gone to Color, Tyler Bradley Walker is now preparing to release his debut solo album, The Sun The Moon The Earth and Me, next month. Gone to Color have always broken new ground with their work, blurring the boundaries between pop, rock and concert music with traditional and electronic instrumentation, and lead single ‘Moon Broke Quiet’ suggest Walker’s solo work is no less ambitious. A spacious, evocative soundscape which seems to sit at an angle to reality, everything a little stark and surreal and strange. Tim Rutili of Califone fame adds his distinctive vocals, and the result occupies that nocturnal liminal space between waking life and dreams.

Willi Carlisle – Beeswing

After the acclaim of 2024 album Critterland, Missouri songwriter Willi Carlisle is wasting no time getting back in the saddle with Winged Victory, a brand new full-length coming next month via Signature Sounds Recording Inc. The quick turnaround is perhaps at least in part explained by the urgency of the tracks therein. These are folk songs driven by (or in opposition to) the ever collapsing present, as though sensing that it is within moments of great change and suffering we might be allowed to imagine new ways of living. But far from pie-in-the-sky utopian dreaming, the album acknowledges the blood and sweat required to achieve such a thing, something made clear by Carlisle’s rendition of ‘Beeswing’. “I wanted the record to include a song about romantic love that had ideas about freedom and victory,” Carlisle explains. “For me, the song turns on the line ‘And they say her flower’s faded now / from hard weather and hard booze / but maybe that’s the price you pay for the chains you refuse.’ If you want to be untouchable by the regular world, maybe freedom is actually a really expensive thing, and maybe you have to try really hard to reach it.”

Last month we introduced Tendrils, the forthcoming full-length from Seattle-based ambient pop project Old Man of the Woods. “Recorded during a residency at the Culterim Gallery in an abandoned German sanatorium,” we described, “the album explores the close relationship of preservation and decomposition, evolving the goth pop of previous releases like Votives and Triptych I to increasingly evocative results.” Pitching listeners straight into the haunted vibe of the release, lead single ‘Anticipating’ highlighted the melancholy and desire inherent within Miranda Elliott’s work, “playing like a private party for one held in memory of all that came before,” as we put it, “which nevertheless, as per its title, holds hope in the possibility that that which has been lost might be accessible some way down the line.”

Now Old Man of the Woods is back with latest single, ‘Amber’. A continuation of the strange blend of retrospection and yearning which so marks the record. That sense of existing within both the hushed aftermath of something and the unformed period before a new beginning. With a languorous, enveloping sound, again the mood is undeniably ghostly, though its eeriness carries not so much fright or unease as a sense of possibility. As though in connecting the long-dawned past with a gesture towards the future, Elliott invites us to consider just how interconnected the stages of so-called linear time might be.

“[The] line between flat disaffection and overwhelming feelings, so typical of authors like Ottessa Moshfegh and Kathryn Scanlan, [lifts] Sea Lemon above its contemporaries,” we wrote back in 2023 of the EP Stop At Nothing. “A tone which allows [Natalie] Lew’s narrators to feel at once fearful and dangerous, some absence at the heart of their existence pushing them toward the darkest of places.” Such a mood was central to the release, though more recently, single ‘Crystals’ saw Lew push the Sea Lemon project in a slightly different direction. With the help of vocals from Benjamin Gibbard, the song offered a mood which was “not quite so foreboding,” as we put it, “but still bucks expectation with its willingness to forgo escape attempts and instead embrace the gloomy present.”

Now Sea Lemon is back with another new single on Luminelle Recordings. Described as “a dreamy paean to the beginnings of a relationship,” ‘Sweet Anecdote’ employs a delicate swirl of synths to recreate a dreamy, slightly surreal space in which everything is vivid and anything seems possible. But what is most impressive about the track is how it manages to maintain a sense of depth and nuance despite its more overtly positive tone, Lew treating the heady days of romance with the same level of interest as any other emotional state, hurdling a sense of saccharine sentimentality to offer something almost hypnotic.

You were the one
Knew from the start
God I was so
Sure when I saw
You in your car
Such a sweet anecdote

Last November we shared ‘Poolside’, a single by Drench Fries which offered the “first taste of this newly communal form” of the outfit. Ostensibly the solo project of Brooklyn-based songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Levi Nattrass, Drench Fries has carved out a niche within a country-inflected indie pop, with singles like ‘Out My Window’ offering equal doses classic western longing and a more coastal sense of brightness and pep. And Nattrass’s decision to open up the outfit to outside collaborators only pushed this sound further, deepening the sound’s richness without losing that personal charm.

Latest single ‘In the weeds’ continues this process. Nattrass provides vocals, guitar, bass, keys, synthesizers and percussion, and is joined by Evan House (drums), Kyle Musselwhite (pedal steel) and Elyse Lankford (vocals), as well as additional production from House and Alex Heubel. The track finds Drench Fries at its most vivid and enveloping. A song once again wrapped in wistful nostalgia though certainly not rooted to the spot. Something of a sonic road trip fuelled by yearning, as though a movement into the future is driven only by the unshakeable desire to recapture days now gone.

I tell myself

Last year we wrote about Latino Ballroom, the debut album from Zach Alva’s Westmoreland. “Written in the aftermath of losing a parent,” we wrote, “the record is one born of grief and the long process of dealing with bereavement,” using the experience as the starting point of a deeper consideration of family and identity. Songs like ‘Botham Jean’ and ‘If It’s Over’ displayed the grace and heart with which Alva approached such themes. “A slow, lush song of patient richness,” as we described the latter, “coloured by the assured certainty of love but a sense of searching too. As though working through the maddening ambiguity of loss in all of its guises, demanding an answer one way or another.”

Latino Ballroom by WESTMORELAND

New double single, Fireplace Lounge / Karaoke Nightmare represents a continuation of Westmoreland’s empathetic style, as well as Alva’s ability to conjure narrative with sparing details. A-side ‘Fireplace Lounge’ is as warm and welcoming as anything on Latino Ballroom, its slow rhythm thick with nostalgic fondness and Alva’s vocals earnest enough to match. But there’s a playfulness beneath the surface too. That kind of crooked humour which runs below the exterior of the closest relationships. The result is both a snapshot of a single night and a wider love condensed.

‘Karaoke Nightmare’ is more of a departure from what came before. Another slow night time song, though this time the rich warmth is distorted slightly to live up to its title. The vulnerability of karaoke is evoked to great effect. The late night loneliness, the unexpected silence, the sashaying croon. The distortion grows worse as the track develops, and with it the sense of something being lost in real time. That unnerving sensation of what was once the present becoming memory. Something no longer lived but instead only thought about. A photograph thumbed until the picture begins to fade.
