“While the track might be reflective in tone, looking back on a past relationship and what might have been, the sound itself has its eyes firmly on the horizon, galloping forward with considerable momentum and heft. Who says nostalgia can’t pack a real punch?” So we wrote of ‘ciggy b’, the lead single from waltzerr‘s debut album Tomorrow Things Will Be Better, earlier this month, applauding how the Seattle outfit managed to repurpose retrospection into something cathartic. The project began as the solo endeavour of vocalist and songwriter Emily Waltzer, though gradually evolved into a trio as Anthony Coraggio (bass) and Schuyler Jensen (guitar) were brought into the fold, meaning waltzerr has the confessional DNA of classic bedroom pop but far more energy and body to its sound.
With the album coming later this week via benefit non-profit label Share It Music, waltzerr have unveiled one last single to keep anticipation high. Described as a track “about recognizing when love is no longer enough to sustain an unhealthy relationship,” ‘Counting Clovers’ is a typically bittersweet number, fighting through the lingering hold of fondness to regain a sense of self-worth amid experiences of emotional manipulation. The result might open with a certain sense of hesitation, but what emerges is affirming in its resolve, acting in spite of vulnerability and regret in order to move towards a healthier way of living. An embodiment of the album’s title. Tomorrow will be better, you just have to find the courage to grasp it.
