<p>&#8220;A song which shows how the age-old themes of work, loss and responsibility are as much a facet of contemporary folk as any other era.&#8221; That&#8217;s how we described &#8216;<a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2025/08/18/weekly-listening-august-2025-3/">Platform No. 12 (Old Friends)</a>&#8216; last summer, the first taste of <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/david-james-allen/">David James Allen</a>&#8216;s forthcoming album <em>Potpurri Jubilation</em>. The Prince Edward County, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/ontario">Ontario</a>-based songwriter and multi-instrumentalist &#8220;writes classic country songs,&#8221; as we continued, &#8220;full of aching longing, wistful reflection and undying hope, as well as a small cosmic twist,&#8221; and latest single &#8216;By Your Side&#8217; further cements these sensibilities ahead of the album&#8217;s release later this year via Littleknown Records. &#8220;There&#8217;s something in the way that she loves me / that keeps me warm through the coolin&#8217; of the night,&#8221; Allen sings in the opening lines, immediately pulling the listener into the warmth and fondness of the track. An ode to the safe harbour of a significant other, where calm might be found no matter how stormy the outside world might prove. Tune in and allow the pressures of work, money and self-doubt to dissolve, if only for a while.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Fugue State &#8211; We Are Lasting</h3>
<p>The new collaborative project fronted by Northampton, MA-based composer, producer and engineer Dan Langa, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/fugue-state">Fugue State</a> refuses the typical distinction between solo project and traditional ensemble. An outfit which treats collaboration as its own form of compositional methodology, Langa practising what the press release describes as &#8220;an obsessive cultivation of studio recordings with a rotating cast of musicians, transformed into spectral, unrecognizable forms.&#8221; Released to celebrate signing with <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/switch-hit-records">Switch Hit Records</a>, and featuring vocalist <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/Maia-Friedman">Maia Friedman</a> (Dirty Projectors, Coco) and <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2026/01/09/year-in-review-2025/">VSF fav</a> <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/erika-dohi">Erika Dohi</a> on piano, single &#8216;We Are Lasting&#8217; provides our first glimpse into this new world. The style draws on Langa&#8217;s wealth of experience across music, film and multimedia, as well as the sensibilities of its collaborators, though also follows the direction the present moment suggested. “That improvisation became the foundation, and we slowly built everything on top of it,&#8221; as Langa describes. &#8220;This was the first track that really found its identity, and I often found comfort in it during the creative process—whether for inspiration or just a moment to breathe.”</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Gia Margaret &#8211; Everyone Around Me Dancing</h3>
<p>&#8220;A picture of solitude not as some lonely retreat but rather the path towards recognising the wider connection of things. That sweet dark warmth of the whole world.&#8221; That&#8217;s how we described <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/gia-margaret/">Gia Margaret</a>&#8216;s 2023 album <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2024/01/10/albums-we-missed-in-2023/"><em>Romantic Piano</em></a>, a collection of careful, considered compositions which held a kind of melancholic curiosity for its surroundings. Now Margaret is gearing up to release her much anticipated follow-up, an album titled <em>Singing</em> coming via <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/Jagjaguwar">Jagjaguwar</a> this spring, and opening track and lead single &#8216;Everyone Around Me Dancing&#8217; suggests a continuation of such themes. The record might be the first to properly feature vocals since 2018’s <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2018/07/30/gia-margaret-theres-always-glimmer/"><em>There’s Always Glimmer</em></a> (the consequence of illness, as we covered when reviewing <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2020/06/24/gia-margaret-mia-gargaret/"><em>Mia Gargaret</em></a>), but it is far from a simple reversion to a previous mode of working. Rather, Margaret considers every lesson learnt through the difficult process, the resonance of every person she has ever been. The vocals might have returned, but <em>Singing</em> understands something greater. The voice is only part of who we are. There are deeper ways of communicating.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Little Lungs &#8211; The Heat</h3>
<p><a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/little-lungs">Little Lungs</a> is a <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/baltimore">Baltimore</a> folk rock project led by songwriter Leena Rhodes. With Brendan Russell (bass), Eli Simms (drums), Ricky Schwarzenberg (guitar) and an assembly of other friends and collaborators in support, Rhodes creates soundscapes inherently intimate yet often sweeping too. Songs personal, compassionate and often affirming, driven by equal parts warmth and energy. Next month, Little Lungs will put out the full-length album <em>The Heat</em>, and Rhodes and co. have shared the title track to establish the mood and themes of the record. A typically emotive track build around Rhodes&#8217;s vocals and the braid of tenderness and strength they are able to evoke. &#8220;Face down against the bed frame / You woke to the fire alarm,&#8221; she sings, in an opening snapshot that captures the vulnerability on display throughout.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Mary Ocher &#8211; The Narrative (First Movement)</h3>
<p>&#8220;Has roots in the early twentieth century, both in terms of the minimalist sensibilities and the overarching themes, but it is impossible to think of the intra-war period of the 1900s without hearing ominous echoes of the present day.&#8221; So we wrote of <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/mary-ocher/">Mary Ocher</a>&#8216;s forthcoming album <em>Weimar</em> back in January. The challenging, politically-charged album was introduced by lead single &#8216;The Dance&#8217; (what we called &#8220;a mournful dirge for that which is slipping through our fingers&#8221;). And now Ocher has shared taut, plaintive new single &#8216;The Narrative (First Movement)&#8217;. Though it is perhaps the video which will earn the most attention. The expressionist piece is by Boris Eldagsen, one of the first &#8216;reputable&#8217; artists to explore the possibilities of AI who nevertheless carries a strictly critical approach to the nascent medium (back in 2023 Eldagsen refused the Sony World Photography Award after winning for an AI-generated image). Whether this self-awareness might justify the use of such artistically disheartening technology is still very much in question, and personally we&#8217;d query whether the video achieves anything which might be unobtainable via more organic means, but if nothing else it fits into Ocher&#8217;s overall project in its willingness to push into uncomfortable places and ask the audience to examine exactly how they feel.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Miserable chillers &#8211; Bikeman</h3>
<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ll be the bike, man / the basket and the bell / the breath before I fell / Open skin up to the air / my mouth to taste the day.&#8221; So sings Miguel Gallego in the opening lines of &#8216;Bikeman&#8217;, the delightfully smooth and strange introduction to <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/miserable-chillers/">Miserable chillers</a>&#8216; latest album, <em>Innocent victims</em>, coming soon via <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/baby-blue">Baby Blue</a>. The <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/new-york/">New York</a>-based composer and artist has covered plenty of ground with the Miserable chillers project over the years, moving from devotional to danceable and back again, or else occupying both moods simultaneously. But the uniting spirit across all releases has been one of curiosity, a mood delivered in sleek, eighties-adjacent pop that allows Gallego to push into surreal territory without losing an anchor to real life. With its anthropomorphic bicycle, &#8216;Bikeman&#8217; might be the perfect encapuslation of the Miserable chillers aesthetic, and one which whets appetites for the full release.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Natalie Jane Hill &#8211; Colors</h3>
<p><a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/natalie-jane-hill">Natalie Jane Hill</a>&#8216;s forthcoming record <em>Hopeful Woman</em> is one of our most eagerly anticipated releases of the first half of this year. A collections of ten modest but supremely assured songs that explore love in its many facets. Hot on the heels of &#8216;Never Left Me&#8217; and <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2026/01/20/natalie-jane-hill-i-thought-love-meant/">&#8216;I Thought Love Meant&#8217;</a>, Hill has unveiled a third track, &#8216;Colors&#8217; another richly imagined but still down to earth rumination on romance. &#8220;Simply put, ‘Colors’ is a love song- specifically about the beginning period of falling in love with someone,&#8221; Hill describes. &#8220;But it’s also about having a better understanding on personal boundaries and not losing yourself entirely in the potential of something new. It’s being able to enjoy the colorfulness of it, while leaving space for the mystery, too.&#8221; The song has a fittingly Spring-like feel, tender like new green shoots and ripe with a glorious sense of possibility.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Old Man of the Woods &#8211; Edges of Pleasure</h3>
<p>Taken from the album <em>Tendrils</em>, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/old-man-of-the-woods/">Old Man of the Woods</a>&#8216; most recent single ‘<a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2025/06/17/weekly-listening-june-2025-3/">Meditation</a>’ was &#8220;a self-described  &#8216;breathy, minimal ritual'&#8221; as we wrote in 2025, &#8220;[a song] which performs its own form of transubstantiation, taking a desire which might otherwise appear absurd and changing it into something charged and devotional.&#8221; Miranda Elliott appears to have taken such a style to heart, because new album <em>Cape Perpetua</em> sees the <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/Seattle">Seattle</a>-based artist embrace aesthetics both religious and ecological to push their ambient avant-pop into an increasingly sacred terrain. Elliott intends to release a track every week, building up to the full release in March, and opener and single &#8216;Edges of Pleasure&#8217; highlights the meditative style. A song of swirling layers which draws on the choral accumulation of Gregorian chants to conjure something that&#8217;s at once otherworldly and fundamentally present.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Turner Cody &#8211; Recognize a Friend</h3>
<p>In a present milieu where country songs are as likely to be about Disneyland and Pepsi as heartbreak and whiskey, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/st-louis">St. Louis</a>-based songwriter <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/Turner-Cody">Turner Cody</a> shows that the traditional and alt forms of the style can coexist. Out via <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/Capitane-Records">Capitane Records</a>, latest full-length <em>Out for Blood</em> has all the thematic concerns of the giants of the field, mining the American psyche to explore ideas of freedom and fate, individualism, sin and salvation in a way which would make Van Zandt proud. Yet, as songs like single &#8216;Recognize a Friend&#8217; show, there&#8217;s a playfulness within his style too. An idiosyncrasy which, by way of Prine, allows Cody to sit as comfortably next to his alt-country contemporaries as the old masters. The narrative of the track is a familiar one. Ordinary man Billy finds himself gradually growing despondent as he drifts from youthful optimism into the doldrums of normal living. The personification of an entire demographic which finds itself slipping out of its countercultural pep.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">The Yum Yum Tree &#8211; Shine</h3>
<p>It has been nineteen years since <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/georgia">Georgia</a>-based indie rock outfit <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/the-yum-yum-tree">The Yum Yum Tree</a> released their last album <em>Paint By Numbers</em>, a hiatus long enough to make even the most optimistic fans fear for the future of the project. After all, the band have other things to think about, not least lead Andy Gish who has spend over two decades as an ER nurse, as well as working in harm reduction. But good things come to those who wait, and this April will see The Yum Yum Tree return with brand new full-length <em>Turn Down the Noise</em>, an album which builds upon the foundations of its predecessor while proudly displaying the extra wisdom, self-awareness and emotional bravery which comes with near enough twenty years of living. Single &#8216;Shine&#8217; embodies the spirit of the release, packing that nineties-flavoured indie rock punch while showing a newly unguarded, introspective personality. &#8220;Shine is about wanting something that doesn’t belong to you,&#8221; as Gish explains, &#8220;being able to sit with that and still wanting the best for them.&#8221; Watch the video directed by Katherine Lucas below:</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>We&#8217;ve featured <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/mappe-of/">Mappe Of</a>, the recording project of <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/toronto/">Toronto</a>-based singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer Tom Meikle, several times in recent months, in preview of new full-length <em>Afterglades</em>. Released by <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/paper-bag-records/">Paper Bag Records</a>, the album continues the ethereal, avant garde style Meikle has developed across previous releases <em>A Northern Star, A Perfect Stone </em>and <em>The Isle of Ailynn</em>, using this evocative and experimental sound to explore the present moment in all of its beauty and precarity. &#8216;Terraforming Moons&#8217; typifies the style, &#8220;a song that takes very personal difficulties and sends them spinning into the cosmos,&#8221; as we put it, &#8220;a gentle, folk-inflected indie pop song with an almost sci-fi twist,&#8221; while &#8216;A Scourge Laid Upon The Earth&#8217; was even more striking. A starkly weighty song charged with the unfolding environmental calamity around us, as though rising in fury to match the damage being done. &#8220;This is in many ways the extinction level event,&#8221; as Meikle explains. &#8220;It needed to be heavy and raucous, retribution for all of our mistakes.&#8221;</p>
<p>The entirety of <em>Afterglades</em> unfolds in this manner. A release as capable of tender emotion as it is scorching rage, and furthermore one unwilling to settle for half measures when the stakes of the moment are so high. Take latest single &#8216;Obsoloscenic&#8217;, written during the earlier days of the mass force feeding of AI, Meikle feeling understandably downbeat about a future. &#8220;This song came from trying to find a way to reckon with it, but still see hope through it,&#8221; Meikle explains. &#8220;It’s still a condemnation of humanity’s choices and our treatment of the earth and its creatures, but there is a through line of optimism in it somewhere. There’s just no other option than to be optimistic in my mind, naive and difficult as it may be.&#8221; But make no mistake, this is not an acquiescence to the false promises of the tech industry but something wider and deeper. As Meikle concludes: &#8220;Maybe there’s something beautiful about humankind relinquishing control of our machinations and reverting to some purer version of biological existence.”</p>

<p>Not many albums can claim to draw on inspiration as widely as <em>Good Times</em>, the new full-length from <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/alexei-shishkin/">Alexei Shishkin</a> on <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/rue-defense/">Rue Defense</a>. Recorded with a spur-of-the-moment immediacy, the record sees Shiskin reaching for whatever happened to be around during the recording process, often writing the music first then adding lyrics about whatever topic might be in mind. Hence recent singles about video games (&#8216;<a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2025/07/01/weekly-listening-july-2025-1/">Disco Elysium</a>&#8216;) and football (&#8216;<a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2025/07/25/alexei-shishkin-tiki-taka-2006/">Tiki Taka 2006</a>&#8216;), and new single &#8216;Ode to Carl Dennis&#8217; switches things up again. As the title suggests, the track turns to literature for its inspiration, Shishkin drawing on one of his favourite poets. &#8220;[Dennis] has a poem called “At Home With Cézanne” that I had read the night before and really enjoyed,&#8221; he explains. &#8220;Again, Brad and I wrote the bulk of the music first, and then I fit lyrics to the music. I couldn’t find the text of the poem anywhere online, so here’s a picture of it. I took his characters, but tried to re-imagine them in a slightly different, parallel universe.”</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">David James Allen &#8211; Platform No. 12 (Old Friends)</h3>
<p>Based in Prince Edward County, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/ontario">Ontario</a>, Canadian songwriter and multi-instrumentalist <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/david-james-allen/">David James Allen</a> writes classic country songs, full of aching longing, wistful reflection and undying hope, as well as a small cosmic twist. With new full-length <em>Jubilation Potpourri</em> set for release on 2026, Allen has shared brand new single &#8216;Platform No. 12 (Old Friends)&#8217; to set the tone. A song which shows how the age-old themes of work, loss and responsibility are as much a facet of contemporary folk as any other era. &#8220;I wrote ‘Platform No. 12 (Old Friends)’ just after I got laid off,&#8221; Allen explains. &#8220;At the time, I was the sole provider for my family, and the weight of that reality hit pretty hard. The song came out of reflecting on that pressure—not just mine, but the collective squeeze so many people feel when work dries up, when bills pile up, and when life becomes a grind.&#8221; But rather than dwell on the darkness, Allen instead offers a remedy, reminding us how healing (re)connection can be in a challenging, often lonely life.</p>

<p>“Late one evening, I was listening to the radio alone at home. I couldn’t find the station I wanted, so I shifted the dial around for a while. Between frequencies, fading in and out of fidelity, I found a station I’d never heard before. To my amazement, the station was broadcasting my own memories. Memories from when I was seventeen.” So explains <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/dylan-henner/">Dylan Henner</a> of his new album <em>Star Dream FM</em> (forthcoming this autmn via <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/phantom-limb/">Phantom Limb</a>), the mysterious producer taking this fantastical concept as the basis for a collection which explores both the tactile experience of adolescence and the nostalgia of times now past. Single &#8216;We Walked all the Way to the Lake and The Water Was So Still We Jumped in Naked&#8217; shows just how rich an experience this proves to be, Henner elaborating an ambient style with piano, marimba, digital choir and synths to prove how human a digital soundscape can be. Personal details might be scant for this secretive artist, yet, perhaps counterintuitively, few acts welcome listeners so close within their work.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Hannah Frances &#8211; Surviving You</h3>
<p>&#8220;Both continues the mission of its predecessor and begins to move beyond it.&#8221; So <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2025/07/09/hannah-frances-falling-from-and-further/">we wrote</a> of &#8216;Falling From and Further&#8217;, the lead single from <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/hannah-frances/">Hannah Frances</a>&#8216;s new album <em>Nested in Tangles</em>, coming this autumn via <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/fire-talk-records/">Fire Talk Records</a>. <p>&#8220;Proof that art can offer a picture of identity more nuanced than simple labels,” we wrote of <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/kitba">Kitba</a>&#8216;s self-titled album back in 2023. “A deeper understanding reached via an embrace of confusion. Identity as an ongoing thing.” Fresh from <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2025/06/02/weekly-listening-june-2025-1/"><em>I’ll Send You A Sign</em></a>, a collaborative release with Dan Knishkowy under the name <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/RD">R&amp;D</a>, Kitba (AKA <span data-olk-copy-source="MessageBody">Brooklyn-based harpist and songwriter</span> Rebecca El-Saleh) is preparing to return with a brand new full-length, <em>Hold the Edges</em>. The record continues and deepens this exploration of identity with a typically lush, detailed and intuitive sound. With the album set for release next month via <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/ruination-record-co/">Ruination Record Co</a>., single &#8216;Wolf&#8217;s Mouth&#8217; serves to introduce the record&#8217;s searching tone and its embrace of ambiguity. As though realising the path to self-discovery is not a finite number of epiphanic steps but rather something convoluted and unending, full knowledge always just out of reach. “The song is based on a recurring childhood nightmare where I was in a room with a filing cabinet in the corner and a large wolf that would open its mouth,&#8221; El-Saleh describes. &#8220;I would place my head inside its mouth and then wake up. I never got to see beyond the bite and I often wonder what was in the cabinet and why.&#8221;</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Piggietails &#8211; Cycling Song</h3>
<p>Piggietails are a four-piece from Naarm/<a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/melbourne">Melbourne</a>, comprising of Cal Blackburn, Jet Noonan, Izzy Hardisty and Tino D’Onghia. In September, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/spoilsport-records">Spoilsport Records</a> will release their self-titled record, a collection of ten songs which introduce the band&#8217;s signature easygoing charm and a low-key style they refer to as &#8220;everyday music.&#8221; The label describe how Piggietails draw inspiration from &#8220;eighties Australiana guitar pop, the indie rock stylings of Yo La Tengo and a splash of the revivalist jangle of the noughties.&#8221; So, as you might expect, their songs are a little bit jangly but not too twee, favouring gentleness over detailed maximalism. Lead single &#8216;Cycling Song&#8217; is our first taste, a soft indie pop song that nevertheless has some of the freewheeling energy its title suggests.</p>

<p>The recording project of <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/oslo">Oslo</a>-based singer-songwriter, harpist and producer Linnea Vestre, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/SIKADE">SIKADE</a> makes an ethereal brand of music, combining alt, indie, dream pop and folk influences into something at once delicate and enveloping. <p>Next month, Philadelphia’s <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/soup-dreams">Soup Dreams</a> will release their debut LP, <em>Hellbender</em>, via <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/candlepin-records">Candlepin Records</a> and <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/pleasure-tapes">Pleasure Tapes</a>. The band combine the slight twang and songwriting chops of country rock with some lo-fi fuzz and raw indie rock energy, meaning fans of <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/merce-lemon">Merce Lemon</a>, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/sadurn">Sadurn</a>, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/tuxis-giant">Tuxis Giant</a> and the burgeoning countrygaze scene will finds lots to like. Following the runaway lead single ‘Radiator Baby’ and the heartfelt follow-up &#8216;Red Bird&#8217;, the band have unveiled one final single to herald the record. Titled &#8216;Wonderdog&#8217;, the song is an aching lament but not as you know it, the hazy textures and melancholic reflection countered with equal forces of energy and weight, all driving towards a conclusion that&#8217;s as energetic and is it cathartic.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Tiberius &#8211; Felt</h3>
<p>Introducing <em>Troubadour</em>, the new album from Boston farm emo outfit <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/tiberius/">Tiberius</a>, last month, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2025/07/18/tiberius-sag/">we described</a> how lead Brendan Wright and co. use the album to reckon with fundamental questions both artistic and personal. Who do you want to be? What role should music play in the decision? Lead single &#8216;Sag&#8217; was thus understandably conflicted, &#8220;pulled in all directions by competing emotions,&#8221; as we put it. &#8220;Uncertainty, doubt, desperation, a recurrent yet skittish determination to embrace some inner truth. With the album&#8217;s release via <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/audio-antihero">Audio Antihero</a> edging nearer, Tiberius have shared another single, &#8216;Felt&#8217;. A track which essentially serves as the inflection point which birthed the record, where Wright was forced to confront their identity without the crutch of other people. “When I wrote &#8216;Felt&#8217;, I was fairly fresh out of a breakup and was spending a lot of time looking for distractions,&#8221; they explain. &#8220;Instead of tackling some bigger questions, and engaging in a healthy recovery, I was tucking away my feelings into compartments and distracting myself with casual dating. I was spending some late nights slipping into the backstories of strangers&#8217; lives—exhilarating, but merely theatrical. It never eased the issue at hand. I was alone, and I was terrified to sit with that.”</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>&#8220;A project which exists in defiance of poverty and disability, functioning both as a source of healing and a way to spite the challenges life has placed in their way.&#8221; That&#8217;s how we described <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/hamilton/">Hamilton</a>, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/ontario/">Ontario</a>&#8216;s <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/madam-sad/">Madam Sad</a> back in 2024, with singles like &#8216;<a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2024/07/01/weekly-listening-july-2024-1/">Hope For You</a>&#8216; and &#8216;<a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2024/07/29/weekly-listening-july-2024-5/">Ex&#8217;s</a>&#8216; showing &#8220;the heart which underpins the [project], as well as its willingness to confront difficult things with a compassionate face.&#8221; The latest Madam Sad full-length <em>HRT Vocal Transition</em> is no different, an album which documents the experience of testosterone hormone replacement therapy as part of a gender transition in chronological time, each track marked with a date to position it within the process.</p>
<p>Opener &#8216;Pre T.Lesser Need&#8217; serves as the baseline from which to chart this change, one of only two songs on the record performed before starting testosterone (the other, &#8216;Heaven State&#8217;, is paired with a version performed six and a half months into HRT to make the comparison even clearer). But while the vocals are understandably central to the release, the record is far more than a simple exercise is comparison. Each song is its own a sonic collage, lo-fi folk embellished with a variety of ambient sounds, instruments and samples. The result is strikingly intimate while still reaching for universal experience. Single &#8216;2.7 mo.Narcissism&#8217; embodies this style, bathed in rich textures and delivered with assured conviction even as disorder seeps into the sound. &#8220;At 2 months and 3 weeks into my transition, &#8216;Narcissism&#8217; adds chaos to the album,&#8221; Madam Sad explains:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 40px;">Like other tracks on the HRT album, I use life sounds as percussion or to add a bassy depth. Towards the end of &#8216;Narcissism&#8217; I use a non-timed random track of putting dishes away to syncopate to the outro of the song. As well the trumpet in this song was almost entirely cut and paste recycled from the original take, which again makes doing a lot with a little feel very possible. With all songs on the album, I regularly just throw in a field recording and make it work. Kind of the beauty of experimentation, the stakes feel low.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>We first wrote about <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/Toronto">Toronto</a>&#8216;s <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/burs/">Burs</a> back in 2022 upon the release of their full-length album <em>Holding Patterns</em>. &#8220;A record which blended various shades of indie, folk and dream pop to allow the quartet to explore a myriad of different moods and settings,&#8221; <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2022/12/13/weekly-listening-december-2022-1/">as we put it</a>. &#8220;What resulted was a rich and often ethereal collection of songs able to change with fluid ease.&#8221; Now the quartet—that&#8217;s Lauren Dillen (electric guitar, vocals), Ray Goudy (guitar, pedal steel, glitches, drum machine, vocals), Devon Savas (bass, synth, baritone guitar, glitches, vocals) and Aidan McConnell (drums, percussion, vocals, glitches)—are back with a brand new double single <em>Soil // Blackflies</em> on <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/birthday-cake-records/">Birthday Cake Records</a> to introduce the next stage of the Burs project. &#8220;These songs have been dear to us as exercises in the transformation of our chemistry,&#8221; as the band explained in a <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/DJZayseOKpJ/?img_index=1">social media post</a>, &#8220;as well as personal favourites to rip onstage in recent years.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8216;Soil&#8217; establishes the style of this next step in the Burs evolution, a track which embraces an alt-country aesthetic to weave a sound full of wistfulness and compassion. Though certainly a break-up song, the single is not the typical picture of longing or regret. Instead, led by Dillen&#8217;s earnest, reflective delivery, it searches for a path forwards from within the uncertainty of a troubled situation, looking to embrace self-acceptance in order to find contentment once again. &#8220;How do you let go of the thing that doesn’t serve you anymore?&#8221; the band ask. &#8220;What is radical joy?&#8221; Questions which form the mission statement of the song as a whole.</p>

<p>If &#8216;Soil&#8217; champions the virtues of being brave enough to be proactive and put oneself first, then &#8216;Blackflies&#8217; offers a picture of the opposite situation. The fallout of holding onto something beyond its shelf-life, where something which was once sweet begins to slowly decompose in your hands. As such the lush country tones of the previous track are slightly more lonely and desperate here, the sound charged with the slow unease of coming to understand something is souring before you are ready or able to let go. As a pair, the two songs present two sides of the same coin. Both earthy in spirit yet opposite in tone. The potential for growth and rot ever present in the raw materials of life.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>“What happens when your people die?” asks <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/eliza-niemi/">Eliza Niemi</a> at the beginning of ‘Do U FM?’, itself the beginning of her new record <em>Progress Bakery</em>. “Why’d they move the rock to the other side of Ulster Park?” These two seemingly unrelated questions—one universal and existential in nature, the other specific and personal about a no more than a rock in the park near where she grew up—capture something about the <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/toronto">Toronto</a>-based artist’s songwriting. A style full of wonder, though not often in the starry-eyed-awe-at-the-majesty-of-the-universe sense. Rather something more literal and common place, with Niemi often picking up thoughts and ideas and putting them down again, only to return eight songs later to wonder anew. This inquisitive gaze is not limited to the world around Niemi either, with her own interior given its fair share of focus (“But am I feeling it?” she asks towards the end of that song in a typical moment of introspection, “Cos I don’t know how to tell if I’m feeling it or not”), and the result like hearing thoughts as they occur and disapate in real time.</p>

<p>The record’s title, and in some ways its entire inspiration, is based on an actual bakery Niemi would pass each day, the image of its broken sign somehow indicative of a bittersweet humour almost cosmic in scale. “A few years ago I sublet an apartment during a pretty heavy time in my life, and right down the street was a spot called Progress Bakery,&#8221; Niemi explains. &#8220;I would walk by it every day&#8230; chew on its name all morning. I thought it was quite funny and weirdly fitting for where I was at in my life. Their sign out front is half fallen off (it says &#8216;gress bakery&#8217;). I wanted to make an album like the bakery&#8217;s broken sign—funny, strange, warm, melancholic and hopeful, that embodied this feeling of making steady yet non-linear progress.”</p>
<p>That the last line of that quote works as a perfect description of the record underlines Eliza Niemi&#8217;s success. She presents life as a series of small moments filtered through the prism of her brain, some jarring and awkward (like when she psyches herself up to dance on ‘I TrieD’), others smooth and graceful, or at least oddly beautiful. And the idiosyncrasies inherent in such oddness are often key. ‘DM BF’ is something like a love song, but its object of attention is an unexpected one. “When I wrote this song I was living alone with no internet in a remote, wooded area,” Niemi told <em>Talkhouse</em> in <a href="https://www.talkhouse.com/introducing-eliza-niemis-dm-bf/">a piece about the track</a>. “I’d been thinking a lot about the cryptid Dogman that year. I wondered what it would be like to see him there in those woods, from the window I wrote at each day. I felt connected to him.”</p>
<p>But there’s depth to this offbeat style. Even at her most playful, Niemi is reflecting on life’s big questions. “I thought of how love can feel like this,” she continues on ‘DM BF’. “Like being connected to something that might not even exist, or might just all be in your head.” The album is full of imaginative descriptions and left-field thoughts, turns of phrase that that can be hyper specific or beguilingly vague. She describes a shirt as “Tampax-pearl-blue iridescent,” the sweet smell of drying blood “like a tar street.” ‘Albuquerque’ could be a piece of barely-there Joy Williams flash fiction (“What were you doing at the Albuquerque Airport? What were you doing there?” go the only two lines), while ‘Dusty’ unfurls in an effortless flow. “It tastes like Winnipeg, like cigarettes and snow,” Niemi sings in a moment of particularly pleasing poetry. “Tastes like all my cousins being sad to see you go.”</p>

<p>To describe the music of Eliza Niemi as pop music feels like both an over- and understatement. On the one hand, these are deeply quirky and unique songs, built with an artist’s intuitive sense of composition and with little regard for conventional structures. But they are also undeniably infectious, packed with of melody and a sense of playfulness that feels baked into the record’s very bones. Which makes its sense of childlike curiosity (admittedly with more than a little added grown-up cynicism) feel genuine rather than cloying or twee. Niemi isn’t painting a pastel-hued cartoon of real life, but focussing on its gritty, peculiar details. And at the heart of it all are those questions, some funny and knowing, but others piercingly direct and vulnerable, evoking a very relatable sense of bewilderment at trying to find one’s place in this weird world. “Will it be what I wanted?” as she asks on ‘Pocky’. “Will it be how I pictured it?”</p>

<p>Their first release since 2016&#8217;s <em>And Then Like Lions</em>, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/blind-pilot/">Blind Pilot</a>&#8216;s forthcoming album <em>In The Shadow Of The Holy Mountain</em> finds the <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/Oregon">Oregon</a> outfit having undergone something of a necessary hiatus. &#8220;I was struggling with a lot of fear surrounding expectations of who I was supposed to be,&#8221; lead Israel Nebeker says, &#8220;I’d lost my path with music.&#8221; The time away allowed Nebeker to travel to Scandinavia to reconnect with his Sámi heritage, as well as visit places like Mexico City as part of a humanitarian group helping migrants. &#8220;I got the idea to write a song that looks at ideas of ownership and othering, and what it does when we tell people, ‘This is our home, not yours&#8217;.&#8221; he continues. The new record flowed out in less than a month. Lead single &#8216;Just A Bird&#8217; introduces the new sound, one possessing all the heart which won fans over to Blind Pilot in the first place, but an extra sense of focus for those energies. <h3 style="text-align: center;">Coolhand Jax &#8211; Everything Changes All of the Time</h3>
<p>After moving on from surf-psych band Sunshine Brothers Inc., <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/los-angeles/">Los Angeles</a>-based songwriter Jake Weissman took to the road across America and started working on new demos. The songs would eventually make up the first Coolhand Jax releases, which came out via <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/spirit-goth-records/">Spirit Goth Records</a>, and the project has never looked back. Latest single &#8216;Everything Changes All of the Time&#8217; shows Weissman&#8217;s knack for combining bright rhythms with intimate emotion, following a challenging conversation during a car ride which turns towards themes of loss and death. But far from emerging as something bleak, Coolhand Jax instead wrap these ideas in a rich, wistful sound that highlights the romance of such themes. Finding some comfort in the concept of change, if only to feel a sense of movement.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Cooza &#8211; Blonde</h3>
<p>In June, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/uk/">UK</a> folk songwriter Cooza released <em>Getting Better At Knowing You</em>, a brand new full-length on <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/folk-boy-records/">Folk Boy Records</a>. Described as an album &#8220;written for and about his sister Ellie,&#8221; the songs might have emerged from a period of mourning, but their intent is to do more than evoke feelings of grief. Because while loss sits at the heart of <em>Getting Better At Knowing You</em>, the record actively works against the totality so often ascribed to the experience. Ellie might not be here in the way she once was, Cooza seems to be saying, but she is far from lost. Single &#8216;Blonde&#8217; is our first taste of this affirming album and the tender, incredibly intimate emotions found therein.</p>

The tone is heartfelt if a little woozy, as though clinging on as everything we know shifts off-kilter. It finds a person trying to preserve the small joys and points of interest they stumble across, even if the attempt is doomed to fail. &#8220;saw you in the front yard / looking at flowers, just about dark,&#8221; as the first verse plays. &#8220;I lined up my camera, I tried to compose / but a fragment of time can only come close.&#8221;</p>

<p>The solo moniker of <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/brooklyn/">Brooklyn</a>-based songwriter and producer Justina-Maria Soto, Jae Soto creates music which exists at the intersection of the traditional and contemporary, with classic songwriting sensibilities merging and interacting with various electronic styles. Released via <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/switch-hit-records/">Switch Hit Records</a>, new album <em>Leave the Light On</em> demonstrates the inventiveness and potential of such a style, showing how an exploratory sound need not lack a sense of meticulous crafting. Single &#8216;Standing&#8217; is a good place to jump in, introducing the themes of growth and self-care that run across the record. It&#8217;s a song which represents &#8220;an earnest reflection of the solitary, empty feeling a person can have after coming out of a long, stressful period where they were operating in survival mode,&#8221; Soto explains. &#8220;It can sort of feel like you’re living as a ghost since the rest of your life hasn&#8217;t caught up to shape around the new person you&#8217;ve become. <p>Most people might take a few months to themselves on entering parenthood, getting to grips with the inevitable life changes, but for prolific songwriter <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/luke-de-sciscio/">Luke De-Sciscio</a>, the process only served up a deeper source of inspiration. Where previous LP <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2024/03/18/weekly-listening-march-2024-3/"><em>Papa</em></a> painted a couple on the precipice of their new life, latest album <em>Theo</em> sees them fully immersed within it. A collection of songs written and recorded in snatched moments during his daughter&#8217;s first six weeks, the record offers an unusually immediate picture of new fatherhood, something furthered by the live-recorded style. <p>Madam Sad, that&#8217;s <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/hamilton/">Hamilton</a>, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/ontario/">Ontario</a>-based duo Maddison Schreiber and Evelyn Charlotte Joe, is a project which exists in defiance of poverty and disability, functioning both as a source of healing and a way to spite the challenges life has placed in their way. New single &#8216;Hope For You&#8217; shows the heart which underpins the Madam Sad sound, as well as its willingness to confront difficult things with a compassionate face. “The song title is a way of holding myself accountable to make sure I am always hoping for the happiness of those who have hurt me,” as Schreiber says. “I also do get to a more genuine place where I feel compassion for an ex-lover’s success, and that’s a nice kind of sad.”</p>

<p>Exploring the timeless themes of love, loss and growing up, the work of Canadian singer-songwriter Marisa Finley uses a hazy, reflective sound to further its wistful charms. Her debut single &#8216;Hallelujah&#8217; sees her team up with friend and collaborator Peter Mol, a musician and producer known for work with the likes of Father John Misty and Quincy Jones, and the result is as richly heartfelt as it is melancholic. An indie pop song bathed in ambient textures and sound recordings, as though Finley&#8217;s voice emerges through the cloudy fog of her accumulated past to make itself heard. What she has to say delivered with a heavy heart, charting the experience of falling in love prematurely and the slow process of realisation, though always with an assured fondness that respects the time which has passed.</p>

Through releases like album <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2021/09/09/soot-sprite-alone-not-lonely/"><em>Poltergeist</em></a> and single &#8216;<a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2022/07/27/soot-sprite-lazy/">Lazy</a>&#8216;, the band have established a cathartic, often confrontational style, calling out the slights and injustices of modern living in search of a sense of self-worth. &#8216;I Went Swimming&#8217; applies the style to personal relationships, its thundering momentum and impassioned delivery typifying Soot Sprite&#8217;s willingness to stand up to all that is toxic and wrong. The track is about &#8220;recognising a red flag in your relationship and emotionally shutting down to that person and cutting things off,&#8221; as lead Elise Cook explains. &#8220;Some people describe this as getting &#8216;the ick&#8217; but that feels like a trivial term. <p>Over the past thirty years, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/cursive/">Cursive</a> have established themselves as one of the most consistent and inventive indie rock/emo bands, providing a series of albums which delve into dark, challenging themes with a searing energy. And they show no signs of letting up, with new album <em>Devourer</em> coming later this year on new label <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/run-for-cover-records/">Run For Cover</a>. Every bit as intense as anything in their back catalogue, the record explores ideas of consumption in its various guises and how this inevitably slides towards imperialistic exploitation of power. Lead single &#8216;Up and Away&#8217; introduces the themes with a surprisingly poppy style, though one which squares melody and dissonance off against one another to better capture the tension at the album&#8217;s heart. “‘I had the ‘up, up, up, up, up, up and away’ section of lyrics in my head from its inception but hadn&#8217;t planned on using something so bright, cheery and arguably trite,&#8221; explains singer/guitarist Tim Kasher, &#8220;until it occurred to me that what I was really singing about was something floating away from me, something I was losing, not my personal elevation into some stratosphere.&#8221;</p>

<p>After penning his first song at the tender age of five and later studying under Ray Davies of The Kinks, it&#8217;s fair to say songwriting is in <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/evan-uhlmann/">Evan Uhlmann</a>&#8216;s blood. The Chicago-based musician has now enlisted the help of brother <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/greg-uhlmann/">Greg Uhlmann</a> (who you might now from his collaboration with <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/hand-habits/">Hand Habits</a> as <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/duffy-x-ulhmann/">Duffy x Uhlmann</a> on <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/Orindal-records">Orindal Records</a>) to record a new collection of songs to be released via <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/future-gods">Future Gods</a>. First single &#8216;Lake Michigan&#8217; is the perfect introduction to the kind of intimate, reflective tone of this phase of Uhlmann&#8217;s career, tapping into the quotidian rhythms of life to better explore a deep well of emotions. “I wrote this song while grappling with self-doubt in a new relationship, consumed by the fear of not being worthy and the anxiety of anticipating where things might lead before they even started,&#8221; he explains. &#8220;Lake Michigan became my reflective space; a place to process this unfolding experience.”</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Great Klons &#8211; Twilight Gardener</h3>
<p>Starting out as the bassist for indie pop outfit Eureka Birds in the 2010s before moving to record solo as <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/great-klons/">Great Klons</a>, Scott Klon has been making music for over a decade now, exploring everything from dub-adjacent noise pop to Spaghetti Western-inspired psych folk. The latest Great Klons EP expands upon this with another inventive collision of genres, as indie rock, psych, folk and Krautrock influences all coalesce into a singular sound able to explore ideas of instability within the contemporary moment. With its dual vocals, woozy organ and underlying Motorik beat, single &#8216;Twilight Garden&#8217; uses Klon&#8217;s current home of Finger Lakes, NY as an example of the friction and unease of our present. A time when wealth and poverty make uneasy bedfellows and once proud places crumble amid a wider gentrification. &#8220;Lakeside transitory towns / and in between a hundred more,&#8221; as Klon sings in the opening verse, &#8220;and in the middle the church is falling down / where there are more graves than people.&#8221;</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Herr God &#8211; jesus candle in the liquor store</h3>
<p>The side project of songwriter Chloe Gallardo, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/san-francisco">San Francisco</a>-based slowcore outfit Herr God is named for a line in a Sylvia Plath poem, a reference which goes some way to illustrate its bruised, introspective style. Herr God has recently released debut single &#8216;jesus candle in the liquor store&#8217;, a song which introduces this style perfectly with its lethargic, downbeat atmosphere. Distorted guitars grumble and smoulder behind shuffling percussion and Gallardo&#8217;s listless, mumbled vocals, all coming together to evoke something dark and gloomy but with a strange fatalistic energy.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Holy Matter &#8211; Wishing Well</h3>
<p>Last October <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2023/10/17/holy-matter-autumns-envy/">we wrote about</a> Leanna Kaiser&#8217;s <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/Holy-Matter">Holy Matter</a>, describing how single &#8216;Autumn&#8217;s Envy&#8217; &#8220;occupies the liminal space between the real, emotional and spiritual, as though through loss and introspection, one can lead themselves towards uncanny places.&#8221; Again released via <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/royal-oakie-records/">Royal Oakie Records</a>, latest single &#8216;Wishing Well&#8217; sees the LA-based musician and experimental filmmaker continue to mine the rich strangeness of such spaces, where desires are matched by the understanding of their own impossibility. Amid a dreamy, retro soundscape, Kaiser admires a crush from afar while knowing deep down any potential romance is doomed to fail, a weightless headspace where things are both decided and not. “This was a rare instance of knowing exactly how I wanted a song to sound as I was writing it, and it actually turning out identically to how I heard it in my head,&#8221; as she explains. &#8220;I kept thinking about this restaurant I went to as a kid called The Wishing Well, which had a faux stone well in the middle of its wood-panelled dining room. I imagined this song playing in that dingy room over some crappy 70s restaurant speakers.&#8221;</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Luce Rushton &#8211; Slinky</h3>
<p>Back in April we introduced <em>Slinky</em>, the debut EP from <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/luce-rushton">Luce Rushton</a>. Then writing of single &#8216;How It Works&#8217;, we described how the EP is &#8220;follows the travails of a young artist attempting to negotiate their own tricky interior within an already overwhelming world,&#8221; delivered with a &#8220;seamless blend of wry humour and earnest emotion.&#8221; Now the record is out in full, Rushton has released a video for the title track which furthers the exploration of gender presented across the release. “The word originally referred to feeling forced into ‘slinky’ women&#8217;s clothing throughout my life,&#8221; Rushton explains. &#8220;In the song, I look back on those feelings and reflect on how much I’ve changed and learned about myself.’’</p>

<p>Ahead of hitting the road with Anna Tivel this month, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/vancouver-island">Vancouver Island</a>-based singer-songwriter and guitarist Sam Weber has revealed the latest track from his forthcoming album, <em>Clear + Plain</em>. &#8216;Oregon&#8217; typifies the fusion of traditional and contemporary sensibilities which marks Weber&#8217;s sound, with strong percussion and bass anchoring layered vocals and his signature guitar work to offer an ode to its titular state. “‘Oregon’ was written on a trip to Ashland,” as Weber expands. &#8220;We were renting a casita on this big property where all these hippies lived. It’s a bit of a sensory abstract poem that just sort of emerged. I think the imagery is my own from the I-5 corridor, seeing the lush green flora, very pagan-beautiful, natural imagery of the state, contrasted with the scraps of humanity strewn around. And the progressive culture of Portland.”</p>

<p><a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/Seattle/">Seattle</a>-based Cambodian-American artist <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/thavoron">Thavoron</a> has made a name for emotive, searching songwriting through a series of singles with <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/trailing-twelve-records/">Trailing Twelve Records</a>, exploring themes of grief, desire and cultural identity from within the queer experience. Latest track &#8216;My Man&#8217; is every bit as evocative as we&#8217;ve come to expect. A slow-burn anthem which aches with longing, shot through with striking imagery and unguarded emotion. But the sound escalates as the song progresses, gathering a momentum as though Thavoron finds a newfound conviction within it&#8217;s build, coming to reach the conclusion that the other he so desires does not hold the key to his own identity. <p>&#8220;&#8216;Packrat&#8217; finds Grocer at their most collaborative, trusting in the bonds which have now developed between the members to make something far greater than the sum of its parts.&#8221; So we wrote of the first single from the <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/philadelphia/">Philly</a> band&#8217;s new album <em>Bless Me</em>, coming later this spring on <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/grind-select/">Grind Select</a>, which promises to elevate Grocer&#8217;s trademark volatility to new heights. Latest single &#8216;Caterpillar Pilled&#8217; embodies this spirit, possessing both brash energy and off-the-wall charm. With constant changes of speed, the song is always on the verge of unravelling into chaos but manages to cling on by its fingertips, emerging all the more triumphant as a result. <p><em>Back in 2022</em> <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2022/02/18/weekly-listening-feb-2022-3/">we mentioned</a> <em>talk soon</em> by Chicago&#8217;s <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/hemlock/">hemlock</a>, describing single &#8216;to carry&#8217; as &#8220;a song of hushed yet heartfelt vignettes which rises toward an impassioned finale, providing snapshots of love in its various guises.&#8221; The project has since gone on to put out several further releases, including the single &#8216;<a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2023/04/06/hemlock-monarch/">monarch</a>&#8216;, a month-long song-a-day challenge album and a live session, but now hemlock is teaming up with the good folks at Ghost Mountain Records to celebrate the second anniversary of the talk soon release with the album&#8217;s first ever vinyl run. To mark the occasion, hemlock has unveiled a video for the single &#8216;Garbage Truck&#8217; directed and edited by lead Carolina Chauffe and filmed along with Daniel Joseph and Reed Everette. <h3 style="text-align: center;">Lamplight &#8211; S/T</h3>
<p>Back in January <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2024/01/18/lamplight-house-rules-call-mom/">we previewed</a> the self-titled album Ian Hatcher-Williams&#8217;s <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/lamplight/">Lamplight</a> on <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/western-vinyl/">Western Vinyl</a>, what we called &#8220;an exploration of how one’s sense of identity shifts and changes according to any number of present conditions, not least the place we call home at any given time.&#8221; With the record now out, Lamplight has shared the title track as a final single, which serves to not only underline the intentions behind the album but the Lamplight project as a whole. After experiencing a profound mixture of love and grief on contemplating the inevitable end of an intimate relationship, Hatcher-Williams found comfort in the concept of reincarnation, as well as a poem by Mark Strand titled &#8216;Love Silhouetted by Lamplight’ (from which Lamplight would come to take its name). &#8220;I&#8217;m too high<br />
the lamp light, you&#8217;ve / caught me crying,&#8221; as he sings:</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Margaux &#8211; DNA</h3>
<p>Back in 2019 <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2019/10/18/margaux-palm/">we wrote about</a> <em>More Brilliant Is The Hand That Throws The Coin</em>, the debut EP by <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/margaux/">Margaux</a> released via <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/massif-records/">Massif Records</a>, describing how the juxtaposition of bright energy and syrupy dreamscape on single &#8216;Palm&#8217; &#8220;serve[d] to bring to the life to duality of people too, as though beneath the outward face of our feelings lies depth more expansive and strange.&#8221; With a debut full-length on the way later this year, The <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/brooklyn/">Brooklyn</a> singer-songwriter has now returned with &#8216;DNA&#8217;, another nuanced picture where longing and confrontation can occur simultaneously, and a floating drift can quickly escalate towards a cathartic climax. It&#8217;s apparently the first song from an album due later in the year, so be sure to keep your eyes peeled for more info.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">May Rio &#8211; Fun!</h3>
<p>Stretching the definition of a solo project, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/new-york/">New York</a>&#8216;s May Rio sometimes plays with a classic guitar/drums band, and others an arrangement of cello, piano and saxophone. The latter, what she calls the Elegant Ensemble, gives its name to the new May Rio album. A collection of rearrangements of previously released tracks, scrubbed clean of the gloss of studio production and presented anew as an assemblage of their essential parts. There is one brand new track too though. Titled &#8216;Fun!&#8217; it&#8217;s a song about a teenage car accident delivered with the idiosyncratic blend of playfulness and grace which runs through Rio&#8217;s work. &#8220;The day I got my driver&#8217;s permit, aged sixteen,&#8221; she describes, &#8220;I borrowed my mother&#8217;s forest-green Isuzu Trooper for a trip to a new movie showing at the mall,&#8221; only the adventure was cut short at a junction.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Meagre Martin &#8211; Malcolm</h3>
<p><a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/meagre-martin/">Meagre Martin</a>&#8216;s <em>Gut Punch</em>, released last year on <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/mansions-and-millions/">Mansions and Millions</a> introduced the <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/berlin/">Berlin</a>-based band&#8217;s ability to broach the most pressing social themes of the moment with both confidence, fire and relatability. &#8220;The gut punch of the title therefore refers not so much to the Meagre Martin sound but rather the subject matter they take on,&#8221; as <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2023/10/25/meagre-martin-big-death/">we put it in a preview</a>. &#8220;The world as a series of debilitating blows.&#8221; New single &#8216;Malcolm&#8217; continues this style to great effect, leaning into a more guitar-led sound to better evoke the track&#8217;s rebellious nature. An ode to <em>Malcolm in the Middle</em> at once fond and discordant, teasing out themes of precarity and generational trauma from within nostalgic memories of the show.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Robert Ouyang Rusli &#8211; Elizabeth&#8217;s Voicemail</h3>
<p>Brooklyn-based composer and artist Robert Ouyang Rusli took on their most ambitious project to date with the soundtrack for Julio Torres&#8217;s <em>Problemista</em>, a new film coming later this month via A24, starring Torres alongside the likes of Tilda Swinton. The artist, who also records under the moniker Ohyung, created over fifty songs for the score, looking to match the surreal world Torres has created with something just as agile and inventive. Single &#8216;Elizabeth&#8217;s Voicemail&#8217; serves as an enticing glimpse of the project&#8217;s full scope, the film bleeding into the soundtrack in the same manner the music pours into the film. Orchestral arrangements of synths and choral vocals are accentuated with sounds from the colourfully whimsical film-world, creating what the press release describes as &#8220;rhythmic backdrops for the bureaucratic nightmares of the American immigration system.&#8221;</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">W. Y. Huang &#8211; Life Just Lately (feat. Granata)</h3>
<p>Facing the sudden onset of chronic pain, Singapore-born, New York-based singer-songwriter W. Y. Huang turned to music as an outlet. His new EP <em>Knots</em>, coming later this spring, serves as an exploration of pain and healing, as well as the more general transience of things and the ebb and flow of hope. First single &#8216;Life Just Lately&#8217; introduces this with a bright and breezy indie pop style, welcoming New York rap artist Granata to further the track&#8217;s unguarded tone and capture the mood of the release as a whole. &#8220;This EP was a deeply personal endeavour, both in how the songs came together and the writing process,&#8221; as Huang explains. &#8220;It all blossomed from a very vulnerable place.&#8221;</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Writing in a <a href="https://www.stereogum.com/2147461/favorite-bob-dylan-songs/lists/ultimate-playlist/">Stereogum feature</a> celebrating the eightieth birthday of Bob Dylan, David Byrne describes the magic of Dylan’s “epic songs”—tracks like ‘A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall’, ’Desolation Row’ and more recently ‘Murder Most Foul’. A form &#8220;lifted from old folk ballads with their many many verses,” as Bryne writes, “but then [Dylan] added a genetic mutation to the form—surreal imagery and metaphors rather than the traditional narratives of the old ballads.” ‘Murder Most Foul’ is a salient example of this hybrid style. A song which opens as a classic narrative (“Twas a dark day in Dallas, November ’63…”), pivots towards a more conspiratorial recollection of events at Dealey Plaza, before spiralling out across a series of ostensibly disparate topics. Woodstock, <em>Gone with the Wind</em>, Harry Houdini, and the Birdman of Alcatraz, any number of songs and musicians from John Lee Hooker to Stevie Nicks and Etta James. But having been established early on in the track, the image of Kennedy’s death sits at the centre. A great body holding everything in orbit, connecting the subjects in subtle, intuitive ways. As though the JFK assassination was not another point in a long sequential history but the fracture through which all manner of things came pouring. A wound in the nation itself which, thanks to Dylan&#8217;s ever unspooling style, seems like it will never stop bleeding. “[The song] could go on forever,” as Bryne writes, “and it almost does.”</p>
<p>Today we have the pleasure of sharing ‘Bad Energy’, the latest single from <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/little-kid/">Little Kid</a>’s forthcoming album <em>A Million Easy Payments</em> on <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/orindal-records/">Orindal Records</a> and <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/gold-day-recordings/">Gold Day Recordings</a> and a song that follows Dylan&#8217;s &#8216;epic song&#8217; tradition. And not only that. It also holds a similar gravitational body at its centre. However, as the title suggests, the uniting force here is not a specific event but instead pervasive mood. The evil seam which has always run through the centre of the American or Western project. &#8220;Each verse talks about the concept of “bad energy” from a different angle,&#8221; lead Kenny Boothby explains. &#8220;My overall goal with this song was to implicate Christianity—or, at least, the twisted, Americanized version of it that I grew up with—in a lot of the evil going on in our world.&#8221;</p>
<p>Following Dylan&#8217;s lead, as well as that of other &#8216;epic song&#8217; practitioners like Gillian Welch, &#8216;Bad Energy&#8217; performs this process of implication with a careful balance of intuition and precision. Backed by band members <span style="font-weight: 400;">Brodie Germain (drums, guitar), Paul Vroom (bass), Megan Lunn (vocals, banjo, keyboard) and Liam Cole (drums, percussion), </span>Boothby lays down the wide-ranging subject matter with a careful hand, drawing on universal themes via a personal perspective to deepen every topic beyond its simple surface. Take the opening verse, a timely reflection on war (near the birth site of Christ / caught some footage that you wouldn&#8217;t believe / that night on Channel 7 / ran a slanted segment / through the Midwest on the mid-Middle East&#8221;) which by way of its telling becomes a wider comment on mass media and its complicity in contemporary conflict—both via stoking partisan fires and the callous indifference of a desensitised audience. &#8220;But you’ve told me how / you keep your volume down, as Boothby continues, &#8220;cause all that&#8217;s coming from your humming tv / is bad energy.&#8221;</p>

<p>This ability to vary the focal length of its perspective so gracefully is a signature of <em>A Million Easy Payments</em>. &#8220;The urgency in Kenny Boothby&#8217;s voice matches the stakes of his lyrics,&#8221; writes <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/dan-wriggins">Dan Wriggins</a> in the liner notes, &#8220;epic ballads and reveries that come at life from all angles and exposures, driving at and a little over the limits of self-reflection.&#8221; The sense of an artist never quite satisfied with the scene they have captured, always looking to widen the lens to better represent the truth before them, or else zoom in closer in search of the missing detail which might click everything else into place. Call it a search for meaning, or even God Himself. In other hands, songs reaching for such things with the expansive style of Dylan and Welch at their most ambitious might feel like novelty or pastiche. But in this context it seems the only logical outcome for Little Kid&#8217;s specific way of working.</p>
<p>Which is partly how &#8216;Bad Energy&#8217; can reference such a multitude. Family history as a mitochondrial curse or blessing, childhood memories of pastors in casual dress. Uneasy portents appearing in numbers. Toxic men lurking in the shadows of your local music scene. The climate crisis and capitalism itself, forces at once Lovecraftian and banal. And, ultimately, the sensation of faith lapsed and faith rebounding. A sprawl of subject matter supported by a precision on the sentence level. An attention to rhythm and rhyme which looks to outdo The Bard himself. &#8220;Dylan paints some incredible pictures in those long folk songs, but I often find his rhymes unsatisfying, or maybe too satisfying,&#8221; Boothby continues:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 40px;">I don’t like perfect rhymes. I spent a lot of time working as many imperfect internal rhymes as possible into each line of this song. It was a rewarding process, but it may have ruined songwriting for me because I no longer feel content rhyming only the last word of each line. Finishing songs has become much harder since I wrote ‘Bad Energy’. But I’m proud of what I was able to do with this one, and it’s generally the first song people talk about when they hear the new album.</p>
