Hailaker – M3

Last month we wrote about ‘Gist’, a single from UK folktronica duo Hailaker which heralded a new dawn for the outfit. Comprising of Ed Tullett (Lowsimmer) and Jemima Coulter, the project released two albums before the pandemic, only for the collaboration to wane due to the isolation of lockdown and the pressure of other creative responsibilities. “It was only when Coulter suggested they park any songwriting ambitions and instead just enjoy one another’s company again did the connection rekindle,” we wrote in the piece, “and the resulting songs are as ambitious and inventive as anything Hailaker has released to date.”

Capitalising on this newfound energy, Hailaker are set to release their third album, Serenity Now, this June, and latest single ‘M3’ offers another taste of the record’s stylistic changes. Coulter and Tullett worked with producer Ali Chant to morph their signature sound into something more colourful and wider in scope, stepping as close to synth pop as they’re likely to come without sacrificing the delicate textures and nuance that made their name. “Sometimes songs just fall out and they feel like such gifts,” Coulter describes. “You can’t really work out where they come from. ‘M3’ isn’t like anything else we’ve done and may not be like anything else in the future, so we just lent all the way into it.”

Scald me
Like you know me
When you’re alone with
Someone new
Lead with airing
And leave me with nothing
Man, you fucked me
At least now I know
