Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light I is Earth’s third album since reinventing themselves, and yet they still find themselves tagged with some variation on ‘doom/drone metal’, a sound which founder Dylan Carson drifted away from more than 10 years ago. Despite their continuing reputation as ‘Drone Metal Titans’, Angels is neither particularly droning, nor metal. Combining fantastically laid-back riffs and sparse beats with the new addition of former Nirvana cellist Lori Goldston’s winding cello lines, the album is a showcase for Carson’s austere songwriting and ear for subtlety.
