Small Houses, Michigan native Jeremy Quentin, has a new album entitled Exactly Where You Wanted To Be, out 26th February on Yer Bird Records. I’ve been a fan of Small Houses since the previous LP North (and have since discovered his debut album Our Dusking Sound), and the new album builds upon Quentin’s strengths to form a collection of rich songs that fit together perfectly as a collective whole.

Exactly Where you Wanted To Be is an album of recurring themes, where each song is placed precisely amongst it’s fellows. This isn’t a superficial collection of singles that has been thrown together, it is a piece of art that was assembled with care. Quentin’s finger-picking style sounds natural, organic, gloriously free from gimmicks and stylistic gestures. This isn’t to say it is overly simple or lacking in talent, but rather that the sound is faithful to the lyrics, the gentle piano evocative of the nostalgic summers of which he sings, the harmonica yelling into the wind of the freedom of travel. He avoids the temptation to try and score meaningless points from lazy listeners, to resort to the instant but empty gratification that is so often achieved by the musically belletristic tricksters that seem to win over the public for a fortnight before being dropped for the ‘next big thing’. It feels like music crafted for an individual listener as opposed to the faceless masses, a personal record, honest and warm. Of course, for this to work, it has to be backed up with quality songwriting. Luckily, Quentin delivers in spades.

The overriding theme of the album (at least for me) is that of distance, both spatial or temporal. ‘Oh Hiding Out’ speaks of dreaming of Illinois, of St Louis awaiting his voice. It speaks of driving to the city and of travels to different and exciting places. ‘Our Sweet’ talks of summers and winters and of driving away. The closing track ‘Homes and Photographs’ is packed with nostalgic imagery, a song of promises to be places that he is evidently away from, and of a lot of driving in between. There is a perfect blend of home and travelling, maybe indicating our inherent need for both. The line ’give you something you can keep like a penny laid on a railway, I bought a diamond for your ring’ sums up the whole album, the juxtaposition of the adventure of being away with a vital sentimentality and desire for belonging.

This idea of distance, of time and travel, brings to mind an interesting thought that is often on my mind; the idea of our lives as a journey to (or away from) some ideal destination, some better time. David Foster Wallace, on describing Franz Kafka’s central humour, puts this better than I ever could.

That our endless and impossible journey toward home is in fact our home…

To envision us readers coming up and pounding on this door, pounding and pounding, not just wanting admission but needing it, we don’t know what it is but we can feel it, this total desperation to enter, pounding and pushing and kicking, etc. That, finally, the door opens…and it opens outward: we’ve been inside what we wanted all along.

Whether it is intentional on Quentin’s part or whether he meant something else entirely, the title Exactly Where You Wanted To Be seems to encapsulate this sentiment. The album tells of nostalgic pasts and hopeful futures, but what it really does is illustrate the here and now – life’s long journey – people at the mercy of their hopeful dreams and rose-tinted pasts. It captures the present, exactly where we want to be.

You can get the album from Yer Bird Records from the 26th or pre-order it here.

Pickering Pick has just released a new album entitled (Tropic) on Yer Bird Records. A follow up to Prayer Flag, which he released last year, the album continues in the same vein of soft, finger-picked folk songs and the occasional piano ballad (see lead single Standing Stone). Pick’s gentle delivery and delicate instrumentation could soundtrack a sunny walk through the countryside just as easily as a sad montage at the end of your favourite TV show. Maybe you could read into the album title here and note the parentheses around the pleasant-sounding, warm-weather associated word?

The album’s other strength is in the vocals and songwriting. I believe that he is a UK native who has since relocated to California, and this is apparent in his vocals. The songs are poetic and wistful and deceptively simple, with the yearning and honesty you would expect from any songwriter worth his salt. Here I should say that the lyrics have produced another hypothesis on the album title (revealing my inner biologist), one that probably disproves my first idea. Tropism is the response of an organism to a specific stimulus, for example heliotropic plants position themselves toward/away from the sun to maximize/minimize light on their leaves. There are a few rather clear references to an anthropomorphic version this sort of idea across the album, not least on the title track where Pick sings ’She grows towards the sun’. The idea can be applied to other, less direct lyrics too, with themes of leaving/staying and so on. It’s an interesting concept and I wonder how far he intended the reference to go through the record.

Whatever was intended, the album is a superb example of how simple but carefully crafted music and strong songwriting can produce some of the most exciting and emotional music that begs to be played again. If you consider yourself a fan of any of the other Yer Bird artists (e.g. Tyler Butler, John Statz, Greater Pacific) then I’d highly recommend checking this out. I’ve embedded one of my current favourites below, so have a listen and then buy the album via Yer Bird Records.

I don’t know what it is but recently the Midwest seems to be haunting me. For some the area keeps coming up, songs mention it in passing, every other book I read seems to be set there… I can’t escape it. As a Brit the meaning was slightly lost on me but the more it’s mentioned and the more I read about it I get the impression ‘the Midwest’ could almost be used as a synonym for ‘home’ in many cases, not in a geographical sense (not everyone is from there, obviously) but in the feel of it. It the sort of place that seems embarrassing and archaic as you grow up there, somewhere to escape for bigger cities, exciting times, etc. Naturally then it’s also a place thick with nostalgia, thick with some form of meaning or substance that cannot be found in the superficial and unsympathetic cities. At least that’s what I think writers are often trying to convey with characters hailing from the Midwest, the sense that young narcissism and adventure gives way to a strong need to belong.

John Statz is a folk artist from Madison WI and his latest album ’Old Fashioned’ captures this feeling of nostalgia in the Midwest perfectly. Each song conjures real people with classic problems, age old American tales with narratives that last well beyond (and before) the track’s run time, including a quite brilliant cover of Frightened Rabbit’s Old Old Fashioned. Basically this is Americana at it’s very best.

‘Old Fashioned’ is scheduled for release on 24th January and can be streamed in full over at Yer Bird Records Bandcamp page right now.

P.S. US/Canadian readers (if you exist), please feel free to correct me on the Midwest thing, I could be horribly wrong.
