Worthitpurchase have stayed true to this fluid and adaptable style in the intervening time. Though currently spread out across California, the outfit chose to lean into the changeable conditions, working wherever and whenever the opportunity arose, with whoever happened to be available at a given moment. Again, what might for others prove a barrier to creation was instead embraced as part of the process, and comes to form an intrinsic part of the work which results.

Today we have the pleasure of sharing ‘Big Canada’, a new Worthitpurchase single out via Anxiety Blanket which serves as a direct celebration of this changing, unsettled style. With intricate fingerpicked guitar, 12-bit drums and vocal delivery which plays like a stream of consciousness, the song plays like something between Big Thief and Boards of Canada (hence the title), and makes a home in the space between things. “The drum chop sounds like it’s coming off of Skype and the main guitar ended up getting recorded slightly out of tune, so we decided to embrace grainy/warped quality,” as Rowe explains. “It felt super nostalgic and reminded me of how life is really just a series of transients.”

Worthitpurchase teamed up with Anxiety Blanket Records for single ‘Inbetween‘, and having added Eric Van Thyne to the band, have now announced a brand new full-length with the label. Truthtelling refines the Worthitpurchase aesthetic, pushing further into the juxtaposition of experimental pop soundscapes and intimate, personal themes to fully capture the anxiety of the moment.

The band didn’t need to work hard to get inside such a headspace. Recording took place amid raging wildfires and the global pandemic, forces which interrupted plans and made recording fragmented and difficult. Latest single ‘Calendar Talk’ confronts this head-on, exploring what it means to live and create in a world falling apart at the seams. A song personal in scope but moved by the disorder around it, emerging all the more relatable and convincing as a result. “At the time, the [recording] process felt chaotic,” Van Thyne admits, “but listening now, it comes across as seamless and earnest.” Because in times like these, how else is there to work?

I keep forgetting to cross off the days on my calendar
I’m in a phase where I can’t seem to let anything go
Driving north in a sunset rewinds time
Don’t forget to set the upper limits on your life

This month saw Worthitpurchase return with a brand new single on Anxiety Blanket Records, one which develops this style and shows a new dimension to the band too. Because ‘Inbetween’ is a deceptively simple song, one anchored by acoustic guitar to lend a stripped back intimacy as Rowe explores the worries and expectations of contemporary life. But the song develops into something richer as it progresses, a warmth which allows a certain comfort to emerge, and with it the conviction that things might turn out alright in the end.

In combining ethereal textures with a sense of motion, ‘Dizzy Age’ presents an oddly immersive sound. Like a dream set in a familiar place, where the sense of recognition drains away as the contours you thought you knew bend and blur. The result is as engaging as it is vertiginous, leaving one no option but to lean back and become enveloped by the movement.

The song’s rhythm speaks to its themes too. How motion is dizzying and strange, the comfort of the past getting further away as time continues on. A sensation supercharged in the current moment, where the progression of the new is ever-constant. ‘Dizzy Age’ is therefore worried for the present and wistful for the past, but more than that, haunted by the knowledge that there’s no return in this life. “The smallest feeling fuels a rocket to space,” Rowe sings. “I can’t stop thinking and I hate how things change / Trying to find a way / But I won’t go back, ‘cause I can’t get back.”
