<p>&#8220;Try as we might to describe why a night of live music can comfort us, relieve us, inspire us, confront us or sometimes even change us entirely, the actual phenomenon is something you have to be present to fully understand&#8221; &#8211; <a href="http://www.varioussmallflames.co.uk/2015/07/06/show-review-eskimeaux-elvis-depressedly-mitski-seattle-62815/">Erika wrote about the Mitski/Eskimeaux/Elvis Depressedly/Dude York show in Seattle, and drew some pictures too</a>.</p>

<p><strong>Daytime TV</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;Lo-fi, psych-tinged, rock music, fusing the DIY indie rock ethos with mid 2000’s British garage rock&#8221; &#8211; <a href="http://www.varioussmallflames.co.uk/2015/07/06/daytime-tv-st/">Our thoughts on the self-titled EP from Daytime TV</a></p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Ought</strong></p>
<p>Canadian rockers Ought <a href="http://www.varioussmallflames.co.uk/2015/07/08/ought-announce-new-album/">have a new album coming very soon</a> on Constellation Records.</p>
<iframe width="100%" height="166" scrolling="no" frameborder="no" src="https://w.soundcloud.com/player/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fapi.soundcloud.com%2Ftracks%2F212246903&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&visual=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&color=ff5500"></iframe>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Don DeLillo</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;Don DeLillo is a hero of mine. The finest writer of our times&#8230; &#8221; &#8211; <a href="http://www.varioussmallflames.co.uk/2015/07/07/don-delillo-white-noise/">We made a playlist of songs to soundtrack DeLillo&#8217;s <em>White Noise</em></a>, together with some gushing words.</p>
<p><a href="https://i0.wp.com/www.varioussmallflames.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/whitenoise2.jpg"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="5224" data-permalink="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/whitenoise2/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/varioussmallflames.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/whitenoise2.jpg?fit=4192%2C4122&amp;ssl=1" data-orig-size="4192,4122" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}" data-image-title="whitenoise2" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://i0.wp.com/varioussmallflames.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/whitenoise2.jpg?fit=300%2C295&amp;ssl=1" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/varioussmallflames.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/whitenoise2.jpg?fit=1024%2C1007&amp;ssl=1" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-5224" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.varioussmallflames.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/whitenoise2.jpg?resize=1170%2C1150" alt="whitenoise2" width="1170" height="1150" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/varioussmallflames.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/whitenoise2.jpg?w=4192&amp;ssl=1 4192w, https://i0.wp.com/varioussmallflames.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/whitenoise2.jpg?resize=300%2C295&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/varioussmallflames.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/whitenoise2.jpg?resize=1024%2C1007&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https://i0.wp.com/varioussmallflames.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/whitenoise2.jpg?w=2340&amp;ssl=1 2340w, https://i0.wp.com/varioussmallflames.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/whitenoise2.jpg?w=3510&amp;ssl=1 3510w" sizes="(max-width: 1170px) 100vw, 1170px" /></a></p>
<p><strong>K. Adem</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;If further evidence was needed, <em>Beautiful Dreamer</em> confirms Adem&#8217;s eclectic songwriting abilities&#8221; &#8211; <a href="http://www.varioussmallflames.co.uk/2015/07/08/k-adem-beautiful-dreamer/">Our thoughts on the latest release from K. Adem</a>.</p>
<iframe width="100%" height="120" style="position: relative; display: block; width: 100%; height: 120px;" src="//bandcamp.com/EmbeddedPlayer/v=2/track=3682981663/album=595953215/size=large/bgcol=ffffff/linkcol=0687f5/tracklist=false/artwork=small/" allowtransparency="true" frameborder="0"></iframe>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Oh Pep!</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;What should perhaps be labelled multi-instrumental indie pop, something akin to Sylan Esso meets Vampire Weekend&#8221; &#8211; <a href="http://www.varioussmallflames.co.uk/2015/07/09/oh-pep-the-race/">We previewed the upcoming EP from Oh Pep! with some words about first song &#8216;The Race&#8217;</a></p>
<iframe width="100%" height="120" style="position: relative; display: block; width: 100%; height: 120px;" src="//bandcamp.com/EmbeddedPlayer/v=2/track=2886304183/album=324086478/size=large/bgcol=ffffff/linkcol=0687f5/tracklist=false/artwork=small/" allowtransparency="true" frameborder="0"></iframe>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Sorority Noise</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;Teenage, I’m-so-misunderstood melancholy is doubly effective, providing a sense of connection to anyone unlucky enough to find themselves in the throes of an adolescent heartbreak, while proving immensely gratifying to everyone else in the way that manufactured grief is always gratifying – a distracting and digestible simulacrum of suffering, a romantic and wistful removed-from-Real-Life pain, like watching an episode of The OC with your name in the main credits. But the thing is, anyone listening closely will soon discover that Sorority Noise are different&#8230;&#8221; &#8211; <a href="http://www.varioussmallflames.co.uk/2015/07/10/sorority-noise-joy-departed/">we explained why Sorority Noise are more than just another emo band</a></p>
<iframe width="100%" height="120" style="position: relative; display: block; width: 100%; height: 120px;" src="//bandcamp.com/EmbeddedPlayer/v=2/track=2706192710/album=3982547517/size=large/bgcol=ffffff/linkcol=0687f5/tracklist=false/artwork=small/" allowtransparency="true" frameborder="0"></iframe>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Typhoon</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;Let it be known, the stripped back, piano led performance of ‘Prosthetic Love’ is gorgeous&#8221; &#8211; <a href="http://www.varioussmallflames.co.uk/2015/07/10/typhoon-prosthetic-love-piano-version/">Typhoon put out a seven-inch featuring some lovely alternate versions of songs from <em>White Lighter</em></a></p>
<iframe width="100%" height="120" style="position: relative; display: block; width: 100%; height: 120px;" src="//bandcamp.com/EmbeddedPlayer/v=2/track=1898607496/album=3361942951/size=large/bgcol=ffffff/linkcol=0687f5/tracklist=false/artwork=small/" allowtransparency="true" frameborder="0"></iframe>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>National Museum Cardiff</strong></p>
<p>Finally&#8230; <a href="http://www.varioussmallflames.co.uk/2015/07/09/national-museum-cardiff-keith-harrison-zines/">We told you about the exciting things coming up in July at the National Museum Cardiff</a></p>

<p><strong>Ben Seretan Group</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;I wanted these recordings to sound huge. I wanted them to sound massive, gravitational, full of a swirling largeness that could eat up large portions of iTunes libraries&#8221; &#8211; <a href="http://www.varioussmallflames.co.uk/2015/06/22/new-music-from-ben-seretan-group/">we previewed <em>Yellow Roses</em>, a new release from Ben Seretan Group</a>.</p>
<p><iframe title="YELLOW ROSES SNEAK PEEK - OUT JULY 2015" width="1170" height="658" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/kXBkW6E3g-s?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen></iframe></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Yucatan</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;Ethereal, celestial ambient post-rock&#8221; inspired by the Welsh landscape &#8211; <a href="http://www.varioussmallflames.co.uk/2015/06/22/yucatan-uwch-gopar-mynydd/">we reviewed <em>Uwch Gopa’r Mynydd</em>, an album from Welsh band Yucatan</a></p>
<iframe width="100%" height="166" scrolling="no" frameborder="no" src="https://w.soundcloud.com/player/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fapi.soundcloud.com%2Ftracks%2F196149175&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&visual=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&color=ff5500"></iframe>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Benjamin Shaw</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;comfortably sad and vividly alive, like watching rain fall onto a city from the window of a train&#8221; &#8211; <a href="http://www.varioussmallflames.co.uk/2015/06/23/a-new-album-from-benjamin-shaw/">a few words about &#8216;Pylon Pile-on&#8217;, the first song from <em>Guppy</em>, the upcoming album from Benjamin Shaw</a>.</p>
<iframe width="100%" height="120" style="position: relative; display: block; width: 100%; height: 120px;" src="//bandcamp.com/EmbeddedPlayer/v=2/track=972322392/album=4265507214/size=large/bgcol=ffffff/linkcol=0687f5/tracklist=false/artwork=small/" allowtransparency="true" frameborder="0"></iframe>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Long Neck</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;Captures that feeling of creeping slowly over that threshold into adulthood and the revelation that it turns out not to be the whole new room you always thought&#8221; &#8211; <a href="http://www.varioussmallflames.co.uk/2015/06/23/long-neck-heights/"><em>Heights</em> by Long Neck offers candid and reassuringly familiar thoughts on the plight of post-collegiate life</a>.</p>
<iframe width="100%" height="120" style="position: relative; display: block; width: 100%; height: 120px;" src="//bandcamp.com/EmbeddedPlayer/v=2/track=3261220823/album=2942656008/size=large/bgcol=ffffff/linkcol=0687f5/tracklist=false/artwork=small/" allowtransparency="true" frameborder="0"></iframe>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Cyberbully Mom Club</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;Music that feels like the words of an old friend, the sort of person who requires no formalities or effort and is happy to just sit and shoot the breeze&#8221; &#8211; <a href="http://www.varioussmallflames.co.uk/2015/06/24/new-ep-from-cyberbully-mom-club/">a few thoughts on &#8216;For Luck&#8217;, the first song from a forthcoming EP by Cyberbully Mom Club</a>.</p>
<iframe width="100%" height="166" scrolling="no" frameborder="no" src="https://w.soundcloud.com/player/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fapi.soundcloud.com%2Ftracks%2F211413259&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&visual=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&color=ff5500"></iframe>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Estan</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;Raging against the pompous nature of professionals and academics&#8230;how ridiculous we are to think we can assign logic to a universe of chaos far too big for our tiny heads&#8221; &#8211; <a href="http://www.varioussmallflames.co.uk/2015/06/24/estan-the-vanity-of-reason/">Our review of <em>The Vanity of Reason</em> by Estan</a>.</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Trenton Point</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;Imagine John Maus teaming up with Small Black and The Cure to soundtrack a melodramatic 80s teen movie where the misunderstood hero finds herself walking home alone from the disco time and time again&#8221; &#8211; <a href="http://www.varioussmallflames.co.uk/2015/06/25/dreaming-of-notting-hill-trenton-point/">The three-song EP by Brooklyn&#8217;s Trenton Point, out on Vacant Magic</a>.</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>The Wandering Lake</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;Part indie rock and part psychedelic folk, all weaved together with Kupillas’ distinctive vocals, which are not quite a warble and not quite a croon and sometimes drawn out landscape-scale without a hint of breaking.&#8221; &#8211; <a href="http://www.varioussmallflames.co.uk/2015/06/25/the-wandering-lake-wend-to-why/">we reviewed <em>A Wend to Why</em>, the new album from The Wandering Lake.</a></p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Ylayali / Lung Cycles</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;enclosed in a sense of everyday melancholy&#8230;that feeling of long afternoons in gloomy rooms, when the rest of the human population seem faraway and indistinct, like figures from barely remembered dreams.&#8221; &#8211; <a href="http://www.varioussmallflames.co.uk/2015/06/26/ylayali-and-lung-cycles-st/">Another great split cassette release from Lily Tapes &amp; Discs</a>.</p>
<iframe width="100%" height="120" style="position: relative; display: block; width: 100%; height: 120px;" src="//bandcamp.com/EmbeddedPlayer/v=2/track=1795084395/album=3267018286/size=large/bgcol=ffffff/linkcol=0687f5/tracklist=false/artwork=small/" allowtransparency="true" frameborder="0"></iframe>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Damien Jurado</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;Jurado writes songs that reflect what it is like to be alive in the years either side of the millennium, songs for a landscape both cruel and kind, everyday and surreal, songs that can be sad and exciting and slightly scary and sometimes weird as hell&#8221; &#8211; <a href="http://www.varioussmallflames.co.uk/2015/06/26/i-dont-feel-like-ever-getting-well-damien-jurado/">We selected our very favourite Damien Jurado songs for our latest Through the Archives feature</a>.</p>

<p><a href="https://i0.wp.com/www.varioussmallflames.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/wbo.jpg"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-4386" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.varioussmallflames.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/wbo.jpg?resize=557%2C94" alt="wbo" width="557" height="94" /></a></p>
<p><strong>Mike Comite / Hop Along</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;When I think about new rock idols, I don’t envision sold out arenas. I don’t hear Top 40 singles or perfect pitch, and I don’t think about stage personas and attitude. What I do think of is transparency, and a struggle&#8221; &#8211; Not quite last week, but <a href="http://propertyofzack.com/post/121603577144/old-best-friend-on-hop-along">Mike Comite of Old Best Friend wrote a fantastic piece about Hop Along for Property of Zack</a>.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Coke Machine Glow / Jenny Hval</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;Have you had breakfast? I was just about to make some eggs and huma—forgive me, I meant to say ham. Wink wink&#8221; &#8211; <a href="http://cokemachineglow.com/records/jennyhval-apocalypsegirl-2015/">Coke Machine Glow presented a conversation about Jenny Hval&#8217;s <em>Apocalypse, Girl</em> between <em>Hannibal</em>&#8216;s Hannibal Lecter and Will Graham</a>, suggesting that I&#8217;m not the only person in the world who finds the show a little&#8230; <em>overblown</em>. All we need now are some meaningless close-ups of food and we&#8217;ll have an &#8216;intellectual&#8217; TV hit.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Grantland / Jason Isbell</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;It’s hard to keep up a James Dean type of facade if you’re thanking somebody for your salvation. But when you’re writing the kinds of songs that I do, I think your job is to try to be as honest as you possibly can and write about those things that make you uncomfortable sometimes.&#8221; &#8211; <a href="http://grantland.com/hollywood-prospectus/the-most-gut-wrenching-jason-isbell-songs-with-guest-commentary-by-jason-isbell/">Stephen Hyden of Grantland talks through a list of Jason Isbell&#8217;s most gut-wrenching songs with the man himself</a>.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><a href="https://i0.wp.com/www.varioussmallflames.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/vands.png"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-4382" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.varioussmallflames.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/vands.png?resize=557%2C94" alt="vands" width="557" height="94" /></a></p>
<p><strong>Aero Flynn</strong></p>
<p><a href="http://www.varioussmallflames.co.uk/2015/03/12/aero-flynn-s-t/">We liked Aero Flynn&#8217;s self-titled album an awful lot</a>. That&#8217;s why it&#8217;s so cool to see the band perform <a href="http://audiotree.tv/session/aero-flynn/">this live session for Audiotree</a>.</p>
<p><iframe title="Aero Flynn - Dk/Pi - Audiotree Live" width="1170" height="658" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/XneUxgx08HA?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen></iframe></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Distant Records</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;An hour of radical ladies influenced by that vintage surf rock reverb because, you know, it must be summer or something.&#8221; &#8211; Joanna, the face behind <a href="http://www.distantrecords.com/">Distant Records</a>, has a show on KPSU called The Muse in Music. This week&#8217;s show, &#8216;Must Be Summer or Something&#8217;, is all about&#8230; you guessed it, summer! <p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Nice Legs</strong></p>
<p>Seoul-based band and all round good eggs Nice Legs put together a video diary of a recent tour, featuring some lovely shots of the pair doing pretty much everything besides playing music. <p><strong>Adeline Hotel</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;<em>Exists within that small and fleeting pocket in time and space that opens just before you take off from a familiar location</em>&#8221; &#8211; <a href="http://www.varioussmallflames.co.uk/2015/06/08/song-premiere-adeline-hotel-red-coat/">we premièred the first song from an upcoming Adeline Hotel EP</a></p>
<iframe width="100%" height="120" style="position: relative; display: block; width: 100%; height: 120px;" src="//bandcamp.com/EmbeddedPlayer/v=2/album=2972340141/size=large/bgcol=ffffff/linkcol=0687f5/tracklist=false/artwork=small/" allowtransparency="true" frameborder="0"></iframe>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Morning River Band</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;<em>Songs about those men down on their luck but too stubborn to change&#8230; doomed to making the same old mistakes and who continue chasing the same misguided remedies</em>&#8221; &#8211; <a href="http://www.varioussmallflames.co.uk/2015/06/09/morning-river-band-abyssal-channeling/">we wrote about <em>Abyssal Chanelling</em>, the latest album from Morning River Band</a></p>
<iframe width="100%" height="120" style="position: relative; display: block; width: 100%; height: 120px;" src="//bandcamp.com/EmbeddedPlayer/v=2/album=2682538198/size=large/bgcol=ffffff/linkcol=0687f5/tracklist=false/artwork=small/" allowtransparency="true" frameborder="0"></iframe>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>On The Water</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;A strange stop-motion collage that sits perfectly with the lyrical themes of death, decay and, naturally, life&#8221; &#8211; <a href="http://www.varioussmallflames.co.uk/2015/06/13/on-the-water-born-in-reverse/">we premièred a video by Nnamdi Ogbonnaya for &#8216;Born in Reverse&#8217;, the opening track from On The Water&#8217;s <em>Cordelia</em></a>.</p>
<p><iframe title="On The Water - Born In Reverse" width="1170" height="658" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/wVG3S85eZU4?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen></iframe></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Bells Atlas</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;<em>Using precise imagery to trace imprecise, unknowable things, the words coalescing with the music to create something unclear but imbued with meaning, as if reaching somewhere deeper within your brain or soul than you can consciously go</em>&#8221; &#8211; <a href="http://www.varioussmallflames.co.uk/2015/06/09/bells-atlas-hyperlust-ep/">the vibrant and mystical <em>Hyperlust</em> EP from Bells Atlas</a></p>
<iframe width="100%" height="120" style="position: relative; display: block; width: 100%; height: 120px;" src="//bandcamp.com/EmbeddedPlayer/v=2/album=1561838079/size=large/bgcol=ffffff/linkcol=0687f5/tracklist=false/artwork=small/" allowtransparency="true" frameborder="0"></iframe>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Frog</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;<em>Queens is the most diverse county in America, and maybe the world. Kind of Blah is about living here, in this city, which is sometimes incredibly wonderful and other times feels a lot like prison and most times probably both at once</em>&#8221; &#8211; <a href="http://www.varioussmallflames.co.uk/2015/06/12/interview-frog/">we spoke with Frog about listening to Jagged Little Pill with your mom, the brilliance of Lightning Bolt and some terrible advice from David Berman</a><a href="https://i0.wp.com/www.varioussmallflames.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/press-shot-2-andrew-piccone-credit-e1434103629559.jpg"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="4818" data-permalink="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2015/06/12/interview-frog/press-shot-2-andrew-piccone-credit/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/varioussmallflames.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/press-shot-2-andrew-piccone-credit-e1434103629559.jpg?fit=1000%2C667&amp;ssl=1" data-orig-size="1000,667" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;5&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;Canon EOS REBEL T1i&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;1416574916&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;50&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;400&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0.00125&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}" data-image-title="press-shot-2-andrew-piccone-credit" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://i0.wp.com/varioussmallflames.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/press-shot-2-andrew-piccone-credit-e1434103629559.jpg?fit=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/varioussmallflames.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/press-shot-2-andrew-piccone-credit-e1434103629559.jpg?fit=1024%2C683&amp;ssl=1" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-4818" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.varioussmallflames.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/press-shot-2-andrew-piccone-credit-e1434103629559.jpg?resize=1000%2C667" alt="press-shot-2-andrew-piccone-credit" width="1000" height="667" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/varioussmallflames.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/press-shot-2-andrew-piccone-credit-e1434103629559.jpg?w=1000&amp;ssl=1 1000w, https://i0.wp.com/varioussmallflames.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/press-shot-2-andrew-piccone-credit-e1434103629559.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/varioussmallflames.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/press-shot-2-andrew-piccone-credit-e1434103629559.jpg?resize=768%2C512&amp;ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/varioussmallflames.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/press-shot-2-andrew-piccone-credit-e1434103629559.jpg?resize=360%2C240&amp;ssl=1 360w, https://i0.wp.com/varioussmallflames.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/press-shot-2-andrew-piccone-credit-e1434103629559.jpg?resize=720%2C480&amp;ssl=1 720w, https://i0.wp.com/varioussmallflames.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/press-shot-2-andrew-piccone-credit-e1434103629559.jpg?resize=770%2C514&amp;ssl=1 770w" sizes="(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></a><strong>Funeral Sounds</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;<em>Casa Ruby strives to enable people to be treated as people</em>&#8221; &#8211; <a href="http://www.varioussmallflames.co.uk/2015/06/09/funeral-sounds-presents-a-compilation-for-casa-ruby/">a benefit compilation from Funeral Sounds in support of multicultural LGBTQ organisation Casa Ruby</a></p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Girlpool</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;<em>In a weird way, Girlpool have grown up – becoming confident enough to share their dreams and vulnerabilities and in turn galvanise a lonely generation too afraid of ridicule to live the lives they desire</em>&#8221; &#8211; <a href="http://www.varioussmallflames.co.uk/2015/06/10/girlpool-before-the-world-was-big/">Girlpool&#8217;s new album <em>Before</em> <em>The World Was Big </em>sees the band offer a sustainable and productive antidote to the pressures of growing up</a></p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Advance Base</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;<em>Sweetly sad stories about lonely Midwesterners trying to make sense of their troubled pasts</em>&#8221; &#8211; <a href="http://www.varioussmallflames.co.uk/2015/06/08/a-new-album-from-advance-base/">mark your calendars, August will see a new album from Owen Ashworth&#8217;s Advance Base</a></p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Two White Cranes</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;<em>A clear advancement from anything on </em>Two White Cranes<em>, fleshed out with electric guitar and drums and focussed in its writing</em>&#8221; &#8211; <a href="http://www.varioussmallflames.co.uk/2015/06/11/a-new-album-from-two-white-cranes/">we previewed <em>Radisson Blue</em>, the forthcoming album from Two White Cranes</a></p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Evening Hymns</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;I could go on about how [Evening Hymns are] brave and heartbreaking and intensely personal, or how [they] made me feel okay and less alone&#8221; &#8211; <a href="http://www.varioussmallflames.co.uk/2015/06/13/a-new-album-from-evening-hymns/">Evening Hymns has us very excited for their new album <em>Quiet Energies</em></a></p>

<p><strong>Mitski</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;<em>I&#8217;m not the white boy. I&#8217;m not in a position to be heard whatever I make</em>&#8221; &#8211; <a href="http://www.pghcitypaper.com/pittsburgh/mitski-on-academia-egos-and-those-moments-that-make-everything-worth-it/Content?oid=1832629">Mitski spoke with Caralyn Green for Pittsburgh City Paper about being an introverted person of colour in music</a>. <p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Katie Dey</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;<em>I remembered that I had earphones in my coat pocket. I plugged them into my phone and listened to </em>asdfasdf<em> and rested my head on the train window. Closing my eyes, what was initially a gloomy train ride turned into something more cathartic</em>&#8221; &#8211; <a href="http://www.goldflakepaint.co.uk/feature-katie-dey-and-the-magic-within/">Gold Flake Paint talked about Katie Dey&#8217;s <em>asdfasdf </em>and the restorative power of music</a></p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Ornette Coleman</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;<em>A giant of 20th century music, pushing jazz into new harmonic territory and reconceiving the way in which musicians improvised</em>&#8221; &#8211; <a href="http://thequietus.com/articles/18104-ornette-coleman-obituary">Stewart Smith wrote about the career and legacy of Ornette Coleman for The Quietus</a></p>

<p><strong>Long Neck</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;An album with no season, or maybe it’s every season, or maybe it’s just the season when you feel most alone&#8221; &#8211; <a href="http://www.stereogum.com/1807922/stream-long-neck-heights/mp3s/">Stereogum are streaming <em>Heights</em> by Lily Mastrodimos&#8217;s Long Neck</a></p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Mitski (again)</strong></p>
<p>Out of Town Films shot Mitski playing &#8216;I Will&#8217; in the middle of nowhere</p>
<p><iframe title="Mitski &quot;I Will&quot; / Out of Town Films" width="1170" height="658" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/xjy6au_whJg?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen></iframe></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Swell Tone&#8217;s Summertime Sanity</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;<em>Getting lost in the heat and the sense of freedom inherent in the forthcoming season is tempting, to say the least</em>&#8221; &#8211; <a href="http://swelltonemusic.com/2015/06/playlist-summertime-sanity/">Shana over at Swell Tone has put together a selection of summer songs</a>, including <a href="http://www.varioussmallflames.co.uk/2015/06/02/yowler-the-offer/">Yowler</a>, <a href="http://www.varioussmallflames.co.uk/2015/06/10/girlpool-before-the-world-was-big/">Girlpool</a>, <a href="http://www.varioussmallflames.co.uk/2013/09/04/hot-palms-j-c/">Hot Palms</a> and <a href="http://www.varioussmallflames.co.uk/2015/05/21/the-washboard-abs-whateverland/">The Washboard Abs</a>. Any playlist that opens with &#8216;Skin of Your Yellow Country Teeth&#8217; gets a thumbs up from us.</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Kathryn Joseph</strong></p>
<p>We liked Kathryn Joseph&#8217;s <em>Bones You Have Thrown Me Blood I&#8217;ve Spilled</em> <a href="http://www.varioussmallflames.co.uk/2015/05/27/kathryn-joseph-bones-you-have-thrown-me-and-blood-ive-spilled/">an awful lot</a>. Last week she played some songs for the <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00h8mmh">Roddy Hart Show</a> on BBC Scotland and it sounded great. <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b05xvrs4">Check it out on the BBC iPlayer</a>.</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Old Earth</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;<em>Has this trance-like quality that is almost impossible to describe&#8230;It’s music that isn’t satisfied with making pretty sounds in the background, that gets right to the root of things</em>&#8221; &#8211; New EP <em>&#8230;until they&#8217;re called</em> sees <a href="http://www.varioussmallflames.co.uk/2015/05/18/old-earth-until-theyre-called/">Old Earth in typically scintillating form</a>.</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>The Washboard Abs</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;<em>Sad but in a cosy, reassuring way&#8230;like being alone in an empty room on a rainy afternoon, when the not-quite-twilight has that blue-grey quality and the only sounds are raindrops on the glass and the shooooshing of passing cars</em>&#8221; &#8211; <a href="http://www.varioussmallflames.co.uk/2015/05/21/the-washboard-abs-whateverland/"><em>WHATEVERLAND</em> by The Washboard Abs</a> is the second great Z Tapes release in a week.</p>
<iframe width="100%" height="120" style="position: relative; display: block; width: 100%; height: 120px;" src="//bandcamp.com/EmbeddedPlayer/v=2/track=3559789679/album=1866290253/size=large/bgcol=ffffff/linkcol=0687f5/tracklist=false/artwork=small/" allowtransparency="true" frameborder="0"></iframe>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>The Tarantula Waltz</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;Reminds us that no matter how hard, life holds pockets of goodness and wonder, providing moments of fierce, bright joy which light up the dark&#8221; &#8211; <em>Lynx EP</em> by <a href="http://reminds us that no matter how hard, life holds pockets of goodness and wonder, providing moments of fierce, bright joy which light up the dark">Swedish folkster The Tarantula Waltz</a></p>
<iframe width="100%" height="166" scrolling="no" frameborder="no" src="https://w.soundcloud.com/player/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fapi.soundcloud.com%2Ftracks%2F199724846&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&visual=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&color=ff5500"></iframe>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Molly Drag</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;<em>Sad and remorseful in a child-like sort of way, the existential anxiety of adults not yet formed so that his grief can occupy a pure, selfless sort of level</em>&#8221; &#8211; &#8216;Open Casket Hidden Meaning&#8217;, the <a href="http://www.varioussmallflames.co.uk/2015/05/18/molly-drag-open-casket-hidden-meaning/">brand new track by Molly Drag</a>.</p>
<iframe width="100%" height="166" scrolling="no" frameborder="no" src="https://w.soundcloud.com/player/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fapi.soundcloud.com%2Ftracks%2F201179296&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&visual=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&color=ff5500"></iframe>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Furnsss</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;<em>A return of the gloriously sloppy rock that Furnsss purvey</em>&#8221; &#8211; Burlington lo-fi rock act <a href="http://www.varioussmallflames.co.uk/2015/05/20/furnsss-announced-new-ep-on-80n7/">announce new EP via our good pals at 80N7</a>.</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Nathaniel Rateliff &amp; the Night Sweats</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;<em>Continues with the jaunty, boisterous vibes that set apart Nathaniel Rateliff &amp; The Night Sweats from his solo work, sounding like mid-barroom, drunk-but-honest proclamations</em>&#8221; &#8211; Nathaniel Rateliff gathers his band <a href="http://www.varioussmallflames.co.uk/2015/05/19/nathaniel-rateliff-the-night-sweats-announce-ep/">in anticipation of their debut EP</a>.</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Aidan Knight</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;Starts off as a smooth and kinda groovy soft rock track which threatens several crescendos before the horned-filled celebratory climax around the halfway mark&#8221; &#8211; <a href="http://www.varioussmallflames.co.uk/2015/05/22/new-music-from-aidan-knight/">Aidan Knight has put out a new song in preparation for his third album</a>, coming this autumn on <a href="https://www.outside-music.com/">Outside Music</a>.</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Small Houses</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;<em>So here’s the deal. You pledge on small amount of money in return for a digital download pre-order, and Quentin gets to make a new record and eat something other than craisens</em>&#8221; &#8211; <a href="http://www.varioussmallflames.co.uk/2015/05/18/help-fund-a-new-small-houses-album/">Small Houses needs your help on GoFundMe to make his new album</a>.</p>

<p><strong>Eskimeaux</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;<em>It&#8217;s about finally feeling okay with not feeling okay</em>&#8221; &#8211; <a href="http://www.imposemagazine.com/features/eskimeaux-cover-story">Impose has a substantial piece on Eskimeaux&#8217;s new album, <em>O.K.</em></a></p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>The Epoch</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;<em>A sweet, introspective sort of songwriting is the tendency, though hardly the rule. As an inspiring support system and model for artistic collaboration, their cult following is quickly growing</em>&#8221; &#8211; The Epoch Collective find themselves in good company in <a href="http://www.bkmag.com/2015/05/18/the-next-wave-20-people-defining-brooklyn-music-in-2015/">Brooklyn Magazine&#8217;s round-up of the twenty people defining Brooklyn music in 2015</a>.</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Matheny / Molina</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;<em>Molina always seemed to know exactly which cards not to show, and with his deep body of work created music that is somehow both haunting and comforting in equal measure</em>&#8221; &#8211; William Matheny of Southeast Engine <a href="https://commonfolkmusic.wordpress.com/2015/05/20/remembering-jason-molina-william-mathenys-tribute/">shares his memories of Jason Molina and serves up a great cover of &#8216;Just Be Simple&#8217;, all over at Common Folk Music</a>.</p>

<p><strong>Protest Music</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;<em>A reminder that soulful dissent can be both entertaining and politically efficacious. Soulful protest is the work of skillful musicians using their gifts and raising their voices to recreate the world so that everyone has an opportunity to fully participate and no one else&#8217;s voice ever again has to remain suppressed or unheard</em>&#8221; &#8211; <a href="http://www.npr.org/2015/05/20/408015650/someday-we-ll-all-be-free-100-hours-of-soulful-protest-music?utm_source=twitter.com&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=nprmusic&amp;utm_term=music&amp;utm_content=20150520">Jason King over on at NPR Music has put together 100 hours of protest music</a>, using R&amp;B and the genres which came before that helped form the genre.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Frog</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;<em>An attempt to engage modern musical ideas from a 1950s style of arrangement&#8230; [it] was a complete failure in that respect but a success in most others</em>&#8221; &#8211; <a href="http://www.thelineofbestfit.com/news/latest-news/stream-kind-of-blah-the-second-lp-from-lo-fi-country-garage-duo-frog">The Line of Best Fit are streaming <em>Kind Of Blah</em></a>, the new album from Frog that could well be the soundtrack of your summer.</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Summer Camp</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;<em>Inspired by 90s Point Horror and Fear Street books and teen horror films, and the idea that a bad relationship can be just as terrifying as a serial killer</em>&#8221; &#8211; <a href="http://noisey.vice.com/en_uk/blog/stream-summer-camp-third-album-bad-love?utm_source=noiseytwitteruk">Noisey are streaming Summer Camp&#8217;s <em>Bad Love</em></a> before it&#8217;s release next week on Moshi Moshi.</p>

<p><strong>Shamir</strong></p>
<p>And finally, <a href="http://en.blogotheque.net/2015/05/20/shamir-2/">Shamir walked around Brooklyn and played some songs for La Blogotheque</a>:</p>
