As we mentioned in our favourite albums post, producing end of year lists is a task verging on impossible, given the sheer volume of great music that has passed through our ears in the past twelve months. They’re in alphabetical order, because trying to mould such a long list into cohesive playlist isn’t worth the effort, so feel free to dip in and out as you please.

“[Lenker’s vocals] unfurl like a magician’s silk scarves, a perpetual unravelling shaped by a poetic, negentropic logic. [It] is as though the meaning is summoned from the words themselves, something in the syllabic arrangement dragging stories and emotions into our world from somewhere else entirely. Lenker’s gift is her ability to recognise the strange, innate forces within language, surrender to them, and present them back to us with a crystal-clear clarity.”

“Ross feels like a narrator dropped into an ongoing narrative, not fully aware of the beginning or end, or even any coherent context, yet haunted by profound sensations of sadness, fear and guilt—an unshakeable, existential dread that suggests we’re going to pay for how this story is panning out. Wild Pink haven’t come to us amidst this chaos with magic cures or quick-fix solutions, but they’ve come to us nonetheless. Right now, that’s probably the most valuable and noble thing any of us can do.”

“This is the sort of music that makes you feel part of a something, it does reflect a big sad and confused gang spread out all over the world, and we should be connected by shared experience and a sneaky feeling that life is worth living. However, to mark Infinite Worlds as simply sad or lonely falls into to the very trap of binarism that the album spends so much time fighting. Yes, it’s mournful but joyous too. It’s bedroom pop and indie rock and experimental ambient. It’s immensely personal and broadly relatable. It’s Vagabon, though only as it sounds right now.”

“Casey returns to his own struggles with the irony of being an artist in such a world, where to not speak against the absurdity of the system is to become complicit, yet knowing those very absurdities render his words meaningless. Rather than give up, or persevere nobly, Casey twists his art into the shape of this double-bind, using self-deprecation to cover any hint of naivety. “I have a backlog of so-called prophets,” a character tells a Messiah-like oracle near the beginning of the [final song]. “You are of a multitude.” The preacher insists he witnesses truth, to which the first character reacts with genuine confusion and interest. “The truth?” he asks. “What is it?””

“Part folk, part dream pop, part something else entirely, her music combines equal parts delicacy and foreboding with an impressive patience and emotional intensity […] concerned with the underworld, more specifically descending into as a mode of growth and rebirth (a la Persephone), and [showing] off the interplay between shadow and light that constitutes the record’s aesthetic.”

Or maybe it’s about making peace with the current space, acknowledging that perhaps true communication is impossible, and that trying to live with this understanding might be the most sympathetic and empathetic path available to us.”

“Real Life Buildings capture both the quiet minutiae of day to day living—the soft feeling you get in an empty room with just a ticking clock and raindrops on the window pane for company—and the exhilarating rush of joy that is still sometimes possible. It’s music that, despite its anxiety and concern, still sees that silvery sheen of magic in the mundane, a fun indie rock record and a lesson in paying attention to what’s going on both inside and outside your head.”

It’s a reminder that we’re all able to help ourselves and each other, and that we will be better people for both.”

“Less like a chronicle of a disintegrating relationship than the beginning of a process of self-examination, of moving forward, of weighing things up day-by-day and acting accordingly […] On Mise En Place, Alex Napping somehow manage to marry the immediacy of good pop songs with a slow-burning complexity, proving that meaningful songs can still be fun, and that great pop songs need not be a simple shallow sugar rush.”

“There’s a danger that pushing everything through the Trumpian prism collapses some of the intricacies and nuances of art. After all, The Donald is a product of the disaffection Finn is exploring here, not the cause. The problem is deeper and more complex than any government-related trouble, and Finn is too wise to offer much in the way of an answer. Instead, he suggests we shift the focus of our questions. Because We All Want the Same Things is an album about relationships, but not in the usual sense. Not the transcendental, star-aligned love of Billboard hits and Hollywood flicks but coupling based on common needs. Not life-changing answers but life-preserving strategies. Luckily, in the hands of Craig Finn, this version of ‘romance’ feels somehow more fulfilling, the opposite of cynical, for better or for worse, genuinely human. Perhaps the revolution in the conclusion isn’t some violent revolt or epiphanic break, rather a gradual yet constant commitment to challenging our own expectations. To stop wanting too much for ourselves and to start being sympathetic to others. A comeback story, of sorts.”

“There’s something joyfully nostalgic [about II]…the aural equivalent of the era it borrows from musically. It’s wrapped up in the warm fuzzy tape hiss of the late 80s / early 90s, that period of endless possibility, where everything was colourful and exciting and came with a free toy.”

Each track is pure and sincere and deceptively rich, each created within its own little world, or perhaps conjuring a snapshot of a particular time/place in our own. The positive outlook never seems like some near-forgotten memory. It’s as if Sondermann is using Pleasure Systems to focus all of the hope and love into a beam which is aimed at the shadow, a beam which might not make the problem go away, but can at least be used as a formidable weapon in the forthcoming struggle.”

This duality goes for the atmosphere too. It’s impossible to pack the album away into an explicit genre or emotion, somehow conveying the whole spectrum, swelling triumph and crushing defeat, bright white hope and oil-black despair. But, ultimately, almost unbelievably, the message is positive. Even during the moments where the music sounds like the apocalypse, a tangible, sonic manifestation of loneliness and despair, Johnston provides a thread to hold on to, a reminder that the human spirit is the one thing that can, and will, endure.”

“For all the difficulty and heartache that clearly went into it’s creation, Mother of My Children ultimately feels like Black Belt Eagle Scout making a clarion call, a proud statement that is intended to encourage other queer people of colour to use art as a source of strength, self-knowledge and empowerment. But it’s more than just an artistic statement. The album has both focus and depth, exploring themes directly with its lyrics and more indirectly with the atmosphere it conjures.”

“Frankenstein Songs for the Grocery Store finds CHUCK doing what he does best, making songs that are catchy and funny and unashamedly “pop” and all undoubtedly good fun. But there’s always that something else to his songs too, something that’s harder to put a finger on, a nod to the vacuum at the centre of our 21st century consumerist culture.”

“Unpick[ing] the knots and tangles that have developed through[out] life, both retracing steps and forging ahead to discover something closer to [an] authentic self […] Gruñona is a journey without a clear destination, a question without an answer. An attempt to map identity not to achieve some clear-cut conclusion but rather in the hope of better understanding how history and culture and personal beliefs shape the people we are and were, the people we will be.”

“This is an album full of ghosts, both literal and metaphoric, from the disembodied voices that sometimes interrupt the broadcast, to Pennycook’s characters themselves, all coalescing to create a grand sense of melancholy […] but [the final song] see a sense of advancement, a suggestion that the ghosts might finally be confined to the past, where they belong.”

“Soft Spots finds Adult Mom with a new sense of self-assurance. These songs contain genuine hurt but also genuine hope, the narrator finally in possession of the bravery necessary to open up to people. It’s hard to think of a more fitting illustration of the album than the pickled pink peaches on the cover art. Yes, the fruits may get bruised if the jar is opened, but how else would anyone know how soft and sweet they are?”

“The album is an introspective one, based around big questions of where the narrator wants to be and what kind of life they want to live. In that way, it feels like a re-evaluation, the bright and hopeful result of much thought and worry […] The Way That It Feels hits a nice balance between the weighty and the not. It’s an album as poetic and pretty as it is serious and sincere, and marks Bea Troxel as a name to watch among contemporary folk musicians.”

Real Life Buildings are an indie rock band from New York, led by Matthew van Asselt (formerly of The Act of Estimating as Worthless, and Mt. Home Arts boss). Van Asselt is joined by Vagabon’s Lætitia Tamko, Elaiza Santos of Crying, Griffin Irvine on bass and drummer John Appel. Like all of van Asselt’s projects, Real Life Buildings have an idiosyncratic sound. The songs are full of lulls and spikes, the tempo and volume varying multiple times across each song, capturing the diversity of emotions and atmospheres that can be experienced on any given day.

In support of this are Van Asselt’s lyrics, delivered in a comfortingly deadpan sing-speak. They share something with the work of Nicholson Baker, quiet, everyday, scenes acting as backdrops to a rich internal life, small practical thoughts mixed up with big philosophical ones. It’s like being inside van Asselt’s daydreams—his mind making subconscious links, wandering towards the bigger questions. he can go from worrying about broken locks to ruminating on his place in the world, his matter of fact descriptions of a snow day flipping into metaphors on dreams and relationships.

As the title suggests, Significant Weather draws much of its imagery from the climate, perhaps the one thing that’s as ephemeral and changeable as our internal selves. Take for example the opening track ‘Cold’, which from its very first lines paints a picture not just of the weather but also the feelings of our narrator (“I am cold for the first time in a week / and I finally left my room / to find a pink sky light almost gone / and the mosquitos finally died at least I hope”). The voice is an anxious one, the aforementioned ups and downs plotting the understated rollercoaster ride of day-to-day living where dips and drops could appear at any moment.

‘No News’ faces up to the internet age malaise symptomatic of an endless supply of (mostly bad) news. “In my bedroom I don’t read the paper, I don’t click the links,” van Asselt sings, his words forming their own perpetual scroll, the sentence refusing to be ended by punctuation or the need to breathe. “I just scroll past them through an endless feed of headlines each one is worse than the last one I just blink my eyes and let it all slide by.” The feeling is a familiar one, seeing more and feeling less, the creeping apathy and residual guilt of consciously blocking other people’s tragedies.

‘Tare’ is classic Real Life Buildings, opening with van Asselt’s hushed vocals, delivering their unique brand of droll poetic waxing on the commonplace, before building into rousing indie rock. The final lines capture the song’s ultimate message, a reassuring reminder that even in times of struggle, uncertainty or inertia, you remain yourself underneath. Van Asselt captures this message using the metaphor of a garden, in lines that are empathetic and kind, illustrating that his writing moves far beyond jittery bummed-out vibes.

“When my feet get stuck, the weeds just grow
but the plants remain,
it’s okay if it stays like that for now
sometimes my feet get stuck, and the weeds just grow and grow
but the garden doesn’t disappear”

‘Other Windows’ is set in the city, those days where you don’t leave your home, the only link to the outside world other people’s photos on social media. A sense of sadness seeps between the notes, the loneliness of midwinter workdays “where at lunch we can talk about the weather, or talk about what we made for dinner.” The whole band join van Asselt at the beginning of ‘Black Kettle’, singing of being snatched cruelly from a dream of wanting to sleep (by waking up, naturally). The sudden appearance of other voices is oddly moving, perhaps because until now we’ve been stuck inside van Asselt’s head. The track is like those dreams you sometimes have, the ones where your childhood friends are back and the same as always, everything dipped in a kind of dreamy golden light.

The second of a trio of songs recycled from 2014’s It Snowed, ‘Thaw’ tells of driving into New York in the snow, the sheer amount of small details and odd observations giving the whole thing a hyperactive life. “Mounds of snow pushed toward the kerb and covered in all of the dirt of New York,” van Asselt notes. “But the sun is peeking out, and all of its wavelengths get absorbed by my black jeans, and my skin gets too hot so the ice must be starting to melt.” The last of the re-recorded songs is ‘Ground Cover’, which also uses snowy imagery, this time to explore the difference between dreams or relationships first imagined and then realised (“but we ruined it, by walking through it, it was only perfect until we got there”).

‘The Same Hook Repeating’ rattles along in a punkish gallop, the lyrics seeing the narrator sneak out of a party, retreat home, “slide into a chair” and waste time online, before the record closes with ‘Ripple Effect’, a song about more than just houseplants and lengthening days, a final example of the Real Life Buildings deft use of imagery and turns of phrase.

“But the days are getting longer and the road is getting clearer
because I got a stronger prescription
but other than that not much has changed so I still check my email every half hour
to see if anything will
I know I’ll get something some day soon”

Real Life Buildings capture both the quiet minutiae of day to day living—the soft feeling you get in an empty room with just a ticking clock and raindrops on the window pane for company—and the exhilarating rush of joy that is still sometimes possible. It’s music that, despite its anxiety and concern, still sees that silvery sheen of magic in the mundane, a fun indie rock record and a lesson in paying attention to what’s going on both inside and outside your head.

In our belated review of their debut EP, Persian Gardens, we described how Lætitia Tamko’s Vagabon project employed a healthy dose of loneliness and regret to create something paradoxically uplifting. In fact, it captured the essence of what we attempted to achieve with our new name. “Vagabon make the special kind of sad and confused music that has the opposite effect on the listener,” we wrote. “The sort of music that makes you feel part of something, a big sad and confused gang spread out all over the world, connected by shared experience and a sneaky feeling that life is worth living.”

Well, imagine if, rather than starting from scratch in an attempt to out-do the previous release, Tamko and Co. double-down on perfecting this idea. Imagine how powerful said EP could be if the best bits were recycled, given a new coat of gloss and accompanied by a handful of brand new, genre-bending hits to create a full-length album. Imagine Infinite Worlds, a record where the Vagabon aesthetic blooms from the seeds of the past, forgoing the disposable mile-a-minute culture that usually makes up digital age music in favour of patience and craft. Why throw away and move on when you can build something lasting? As the press release reads: “Within the songs of Laetitia Tamko there are infinite worlds: emotional spaces that grow wider with time, songs within songs that reveal themselves on each listen.”

‘The Embers’ (‘Sharks’ from Persian Gardens) opens the release with Tamko’s plaintive voice, soon escalating into something far noisier, the lyrics sounding like something between plea and apology, though by the end it could be an accusation also. “You’re a shark that eats every fish, you’re a shark that hates everything. Run and tell everybody, I’m just a small fish.” The song has evolved since the first iteration, losing none of its vulnerability but now carrying a new defiant edge, the subject probed from a more empowered angle. Similar can be said of ‘Fear & Force’ (formerly ‘Vermont II’). The lyrics remain unchanged from the Persian Gardens version, but the communication feels somehow clearer. What was once a standard break-up/heartache song now seems to be operating on a different level, a song about missed opportunities and perhaps even alternate universes, the ridiculously wonderful and suffocating idea that so much can hinge on so little, with no chance of going back.

I’ve been hiding in the smallest space
I’m dying to go, this is not my home

Freddie, come back.
I know, you love Vermont but I thought I had more time.

Freddie, come back.
I know, you love where you are but I think I change my mind.

It’s as though Tamko’s intentions were lost in the demos through no fault of her own, passed through the bedroom pop filter by fans of the genre and filed as well done but run-of-the-mill young loneliness. With these new versions comes the realisation that these tracks resonate far wider, alluding to issues around selfhood and free will and cultural barriers, and the album’s title begins to seem all the more pertinent.

‘Minneapolis’ and ‘100 Years’ are altogether more frantic, bursting into life with the crash of guitar and tumble of drums. At several points the energy ceases, dissipating into silence before either exploding back or rebuilding gradually toward a finale, the instrumentation coalescing with practised patience, eventually gathering as a dense black thunderhead. Sandwiched between these tracks is the warm, quasi-instrumental ‘Mal à L’aise’, Tamko’s spoken word French supported by Eric Littman’s hypnotic refrain, acting more an instrument than additional vocals. The song is a musical mosaic, somewhere between downtempo electro and devotional ambient that shifts shape according to mood and context, one which hints at the spheres into which Vagabon might push in the future.

And the variation isn’t done there. ‘Cleaning House’ is blue bedroom folk which pushes past the tropes of the genre (“What about them scares you so much? / My standing there threatens your standing too”), while ‘Cold Apartment’ gets semi-near to Daughter-esque atmos-pop/rock. Here the insistent drums and impassioned vocals build in intensity, though there’s a foggy absence which refuses to be quelled, as though the track was written in the stillborn silence of some violent trauma and a mere attempt at filling the space. ‘Alive and A Well’ is altogether warmer, equals parts hopeful and wistful, not so much an attempt to plug space but rather efforts to carve one out – room in which to live and grow. In which to be.

“I would change my hair I’d grow taller
I’d live everywhere that I love
I’d stand strong, my feet will drag on
My odor will linger and it’s something they will long for

I will make a home that is my own
if I move around, I know it won’ t be for a while”

So yes, we stand by the summation. This is the sort of music that makes you feel part of a something, it does reflect a big sad and confused gang spread out all over the world, and we should be connected by shared experience and a sneaky feeling that life is worth living. It’s Vagabon, though only as it sounds right now.

You can get Infinite Worlds now on vinyl or CD from Father/Daughter Records, or the Vagabon Bandcamp page.

If anything good can come from Trump et al. and the rising tide of reductive thinking, it should be how clearly such developments have highlighted the ongoing (and potentially worsening) situation re. equality, and the potential to mobilise people in the fight against discrimination. The obvious high profile example, Women’s March on Washington, pretty much overshadowed the inauguration and did little to ease the panicked over-defensive vibes emanating from the White House. After modest beginnings with Teresa Shook days after the election, the movement grew and grew, with over 670 declared solidarity marches taking place across all seven continents (as shown nicely on this handy map).

Now, aside from certain misgivings pertaining to the diversity and focus of such events, there’s also a long and likely important discussion as to what degree protest alone can change (see Micah White’s case in The Guardian, citing the relative failure of Occupy). However, there is little doubt that activism is as or more important than it’s been for years. The tricky part will be maintaining this level of enthusiasm and commitment to equality beyond single marches or petitions. As White writes at the end of his piece: “The Women’s March on Washington has a role to play in this unfolding drama, but only if we cultivate a few moments of detachment from the thoughtless excitement to truly take time to consider this question: what happens on the day after the women march?”

The answer, I think, should be a doubling down on listening to women, non-binary folks and people of colour. Like, truly listening. Allowing them not only a voice but also the respect/power/position that will enable such a voice to enact social and political change. This can and should start at the smallest levels, equating to nothing more than a commitment to seeking out non-male/white opinions and voices and considering them with equal weight. Look for female journalists and authors and thinkers, PoC musicians and artists and film-makers. Heck, even just read The Le Sigh and Swell Tone and The Grey Estates, anything to shift your perspective away from the dominant voices. Do this until your bookshelf and record collection and Twitter feed look a little different, and the worldview that’s being beamed to you will look a little different too.

We’re under no illusion that our blog posts and mixtapes will solve anything, or that we’re preaching to the converted in this cool little echo chamber. So consider this as us shutting up for a few minutes, both to give space to voices that need it and a reminder that we’re standing by, on your side. You’ve lit the match, it’s time the void went flash. Never think that what you are doing is too small, and never assume that you are doing enough.

One of the best/worst things about the whole blogging game is the abundance of great music. Unfortunately there are (still!) only twenty-four hours in a day, most of which are consumed with non-WTD things, so even if we get sent ten great albums then chances are we will only be able to cover three or four. While trying to avoid falling into the listicle trap, we thought the best way to remedy this problem would be a semi-regular round-up, ‘Best of the Rest’, where we include all the songs we think you should hear but don’t quite have the time to tell you why. Inclusion here is no comment on quality – this isn’t a runner-up prize!

Leanne Betasamosake Simpson – f(l)ight

Leanne Betasamosake Simpson is an artist, poet, writer and musician from Canada who this September released her new album, f(l)ight. Produced by Jonas Bonnetta of Evening Hymns, the album combines lush instrumentation with Simpson’s mutlilayered poetry, sounding at once intensely physical and spiritual, charting not only personal experience but also that of her ancestry and the land on which they live. As such, style and perspective is fluid, every word and note and small space of silence part of some larger whole, where past violence, future hope and enduring spirit coalesce as one. You can get the album from RPM Records.

Will Johnson – Nervousness Fangs

Centro-matic frontman (plus Molina collaborator and Monster of Folk alumni) Will Johnson recently released a new solo single, ‘Nervousness Fangs’. The track is a beautifully sad lo-fi folk song, recorded (as Johnson tells American Songwriter) at home on a Tascam 424. The lyrics read like summer evening back-porch wisdom, as Johnson sings “Jesus what a mess / what they’re all selling / and what’s being sold”. Check it out on Soundcloud below:

In other news, Johnson has been nominated for a Grammy (!) for his Record Store Day split single with Justin Peter Kinkel-Schuster of Water Liars. You can still get the 7″ via Misra Records.

Givan Lötz – MAW

Described as a “an aural savant whose sound projects operate exterior to expectations”, Johannesburg’s Givan Lötz recently released a new album, MAW. The record, which intends to “shed waning light onto and into this post-scientific realm where meaning is unhinged”, consists of ten dense, dark songs which shift and shimmer with unsettling unfamiliarity, all floated on a sea of melancholy. However, as ‘Speak’ highlights, a sense of positivity seeps through the cracks, though it’s impossible to tell whether this is true hope or just a peculiar euphoria gained from submitting to confusion. MAW is available now from Other Electricities.

Dama Scout – All In Too

Blending dream pop and kraut-rock sensibilities with added noise pop bounce, Dama Scout’s second single ‘All In Too’ feels like a stylistic mutant in the most complimentary sense. Calm and quiet one minute and seized by mayhem the next, the track feels like a surreal ride through a many-eyed storm, excitement and fear and abrupt tranquility passing without rhyme or reason. In other words, you should grab it right now from Bandcamp.

Vagabon – Fear & Force

We loved Vagabon’s last EP, Persian Gardens, so it’s great to hear that Laetitia Tamko is putting out a full-length album next February. The first single, ‘Fear & Force’, is a re-imagining of ‘Vermont II’ from the aforementioned EP, and gives a great insight into the development and evolution of Vagabon’s sound. Here Tamko reveals her multi-instrumentalist skills to flesh out the track and create a deep lush sound without losing any of the organic intimacy which made the original so great. Infinite Worlds is set for release next year on Father/Daughter Records and you can pre-order it now.

Her Harbour – Hewing Crowns

‘Hewing Crowns’ is the first single from Gabrielle Giguere’s Her Harbour’s sophomore full-length Go Gently Into the Night, out on E-Tron Records this coming February. The record was written at a time when “death felt omnipresent,” and the single is intended to serve as a “preface to the demons [Giguere] attempted to quell in making the album,” and is therefore ripe with haunting sounds and symbolical imagery. The video for the track, edited by Mike Dubue, consists of found footage from Conrad Aiken’s 1966 short film “Silent Snow, Secret Snow,” forming a collection of oblique frames which match the ghostly ambience of the song. You can grab ‘Hewing Crowns’ from the Her Harbour Bandcamp page.

Pip Hall – Devil You Don’t

Pip Hall must be in the running for the youngest artist we’ve ever featured here at WTD. At just 16, the Preston-based songwriter is making music beyond her years. Her new single, ‘Devil You Don’t ‘ opens with some Stranger Things-style synths before blossoming into a rich pop song that teams Hall’s smooth vocals with the steady pulse of synths and some guitar for added crunch. If you like what you hear, keep an eye out for Hall’s sophomore EP, James, out next March on My Little Empire. You can pre-order via Bandcamp.

Courtney Marie Andrews – Put The Fire Out

Continuing with precocious youngsters, Courtney Marie Andrews apparently left home at 16, travelling the US as a musician before getting a gig as Damien Jurado‘s lead guitarist. She’s done a lot of touring with various acts since then, and earlier this year released an album of her own, Honest Life. The good news for us in the UK is that Loose Records are releasing the album here in January (pre-order now). To whet your appetite, here’s a single, ‘Put the Fire Out’, a warm and reflective country track that is a must for fans of bands like Mount Moriah.

Camp Cope – Keep Growing

Following their excellent self-titled debut album, Melbourne’s Camp Cope recently put up a new single which appears to be from an as-yet unannounced release. ‘Keep Growing’ sticks to the successful formula of the previous album, playing like an internal monologue that flicks through sadness and confusion and doubt but keeps cycling back to a joyous resolve, the recognisable pilot light of Camp Cope’s music. As Georgia Maq explained on Facebook, the song is about “new beginnings, it’s about rejecting what society tells you is beautiful,” ending the post with the simple but perfect advice. “Do you.” Grab the track now via Bandcamp and keep your eyes peeled for news of a physical release.

Field Medic

We’ve covered San Francisco’s Field Medic several times at WTD, so its cool to learn he’s got a new song. ‘uuu’ is essentially a classic folk song, gentle instrumentation and yearning vocals directed to a love (the titular you you you). The lyrics are as heart-on-sleeve as we’ve come to expect from Field Medic, with lines such as “all i ever needed was your matchstick mama / to take my wrongs & make them right / to take my darkness & make it bright “. Get the song now on a name-your-price basis via the Field Medic Bandcamp page.

Lit Links is a new series of posts as part of our Quiet, Constant Friends project where writers and artists choose a book and create a playlist of songs to go with it. To keep things tidy (and ensure a steady flow), I’m going to pitch in every so often too, hopefully with new books I think you should know about. Here’s one!

Atticus Lish’s Preparation for the Next Life is, on the face of things, a relatively simple story. Girl meets boy under less than perfect circumstances and they struggle to make something of it. A classic love tale. But that’s where simplicity, or even any semblance of understanding, ends. This is a novel about post-9/11 New York, a tale of immense confusion, mistrust and paranoia, about poverty in a city smothered by it, about millions of people trying to make a life out of nothing.

Zou Lei is an illegal immigrant from China, a Muslim of the Uighur tribe, Skinner a PTSD-suffering Iraq vet who scraped through three tours of a war that’s followed him home in more ways than one. Queens is bursting at the seams with people looking for something better, or else ways to distract themselves from the present, a roiling, screaming sea of humanity. Lei and Skinner end up together, bonding through a common sadness and a shared appreciation of discipline and exercise. Their unsentimental yet gentle relationship serves as a recognisable, familiar way-in to a recognisable but wholly unfamiliar place. All of this is written in some of the best prose I’ve read in a long while. Beautiful and terrifying and sad, it captures New York as a gritty, humming place that’s crumbling in time with America’s perception of greatness.

Just like the characters, the reader is in alien territory. The overwhelming majority of us cannot fully understand the positions in which these protagonists find themselves. The fringes of society swamped by an overwhelming Lack Of. A lack of money and respect, of kinship and trust, as well as lack of material stuff (Zou Lei has a bed to sleep in but is essentially homeless, Skinner renting a basement with decidedly finite savings). But both are still subject to the American bombardment of dreams and nightmares that constitute the consumerist culture. They see shop-fronts and billboards, they see mistrust in the media and the faces of passers-by. The paradox of feeling isolated and lonely in a crowd of people seems designed specifically to torture them.

But the confusion is deeper than that, one that might impinge on Lei and Skinner more than most but hangs over us all. Not only are there no answers here, there are barely any questions. If 9/11 provided the West with a new narrative, a renewed sense of moral importance and superiority , then events like those at Abu Ghraib snatched away the veil. Technology has made it impossible to ignore that the ‘Bad Guys’ are mostly innocent, scared people like us, that our dirty secrets in exotic wars will not be buried. Everyone lives in this grey area but Skinner personifies it, pining for the purpose and friendship of war while being eaten alive by the truth of it.
