‘If I Don’t Get a Job’ is short and sweet, what Carr calls “a lovesick indie pop admittance about the feeling of going nowhere in life but still wanting someone to be there with you.” In some ways it shares themes with the Michael Cormier record we covered earlier this week, a kind of “Love in the Time of (Un)Employment” vibe that takes the day-to-day drudgery of worrying about finding work (or working too much) and brightens it with simple human connection. The song begins with a twee sweetness and blossoms into fun singalong pop, just hints of a garage rock edge and emo desperation hurdling any accusations of schmaltz.

It signals what to expect on the forthcoming releases, Trying exploring more mature themes without abandoning their sense of simple joy. The new record is “not so much about the direct, intense experiences of mental health struggles,” Carr describes in an email, “but more about the ambiguous and far-reaching effects those struggles have on our daily life.”

We’re really happy to share ‘Nobody Loves Halloween Like You Do’, a perfect example of the whimsical sound Carr creates, though beneath the earnest sincerity lies a deeper sense of uncertainty and longing. Both nostalgic for the past and longing for a better future, this is a track of distances in both time and space, exploring the difficulty in achieving a sense of home and belonging while constantly looking back to what we once had. Indeed, Halloween becomes the perfect focus for such a track, that strange mix of scary and homely, the unknown repackaged and presented as familiarity and comfort.

“I came here on my own and I think I’m in love
City’s a ghost without you, city’s a ghost without you
But nobody loves Halloween or haunting me like you do”

Marathon of Fright is due for release on the 20th of October and you can pre-order it from Bandcamp or listen via Spotify. Trying are set to release their debut full-length album in 2018, so keep your eyes peeled for that.
