Folks songs which “explore ideas of home, family and memory within the context of the queer experience” was how we described the work of Bad Posture Club back in 2022 when writing about single ‘My Good My Sweet My Bright‘. Consisting of duo Maren Day and Morgan Kavanagh, the project uses a timeless, sincere folk style to bring such themes to life, and new album Affinity, coming this summer on Ghost Mountain Records, looks to develop this further. The lead single and title track offers the first glimpse into the release. A considered, spare song which nevertheless glows with a modest yet persistent warmth. “No such thing as an excess of gentleness,” goes the instructive opening line, “at least not for me.”

Bonniesongs – Olive Oil

“Olive oil is good for me / Nourishing deep within my skin / Fills me up with vitamins / Makes me feel so comforted.” So sings Irish-born, Australian-based multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Bonnie Stewart, AKA Bonniesongs, on new single ‘Olive Oil’. The latest single from Strangest Feeling, the new Bonniesongs LP forthcoming this summer on Impressed Recordings, the song introduces the record’s sense of nuance. It blends warm dream pop with something weightier and strange, all delivered with a playful spirit. “I wrote ‘Olive Oil’ while visiting Wellington, New Zealand. I had recently started a game with friends where we list our top five favourite things,” Stewart explains. “Olive oil, ocean, sunshine are some things that bring me joy. I wanted a happy, light-hearted song.” And while light-hearted the song might be, it is anything but twee, the Bonniesongs sound far more ambitious and conflicting to fall into such a trap.

Chrome Harvest – Hex Whoever

Originating as project between Chris Jerwin (guitar, piano, vocals) and Ben Wellman (banjo, guitar, vocals) and later expanding into more of a collective, Chrome Harvest is a Lethbridge, Alberta-based band which sits at the experimental end of indie rock. After winning praise with 2023 debut Sun-Circuit, Chrome Harvest have recently released a self-titled follow-up, Evan Brownlee (drums, percussion), Keilan Hakstol (drums, percussion), Connor McGinnis (bass), Ray Wong (saxophone) and Cori Campbell (saxophone) joining the fold to push the project further. Standout ‘Hex Whoever’ hints at both the richness of the resulting sound and its emotional resonance, unfurling as a raggedy, quivering folk song before blooming into something lush and affirming and packed with raw energy.

Far Caspian – An Outstretched Hand / Rain From Here To Kerry

The recording project of Irish songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer Joel Johnston, Far Caspian has established itself through a number of releases since its inception in 2020. Namely debut full-length Ways To Get Out and follow-up The Last Remaining Light, which employed everything from indie folk to late 90s/early 00s alt sensibilities to offer a distinctively personal sound, full of unguarded sincerity and searching emotion. Set for release via Johnston’s own Tiny Library Records this July, new album Autofiction is both a continuation of this process and something of a soft reset. An opportunity to return the Far Caspian project back to the simple joy of making music after years of challenges both artistic and personal. Latest single ‘An Outstretched Hand / Rain From Here To Kerry’ is an indication the record lives up to its title, finding Johnston as his most diaristic as he details an experience driving all night across Ireland after a failed attempt to climb Carrauntoohil in 2014.

kissing other ppl – Where’d All The Time Go

Something of a folk supergroup, kissing other ppl sees indie folk duo Viv & Riley join forces with songwriter Rachel Baiman, and the project’s self-titled debut introduces what to expect. Released via Peacedale Records, the album is a collection of covers taken from across a wide spectrum of acts—Lennon Stella, Songs: Ohia, Wilco and Joan Armatrading to name a few. “It just kind of happened that we were talking about the same music. It felt like fun coincidences, these artists across a lot of different realms and times,” Riley explains. “So it just then seemed like we could make a record with these great songs, us reinterpreting them, have them all feel of a piece, even though the songs are from different eras and the original recordings are very different.” Listen to single ‘Where’d All The Time Go’ now, with kissing other ppl taking Dr Dog’s original and adding a timeless folk style.

Merzbow – Sedonis A

Renowned avant garde sound artist Masami Akita has been recording under the moniker Merzbow for going on half a century. The Tokyo-based musician has built a vast, varied oeuvre which reimagines the possibilities of noise. But while Akita’s back catalogue is already far deeper than most artists could even dream, he continues to create and release new music, and new album Sedonis shows there is no let up in his ambition. Merzbow’s debut with Chicago imprint Signal Noise, the record uses a computer, modular electronics and homemade instruments to create a sound inspired by the kaiju Barunga from sixties TV series Ultra Q. Single ‘Sedonis A’ is suggestive of the scale of the release, a cut as harsh and sublime as any giant creature hell-bent on making Tokyo its own.

Rebecca Schiffman – Little Mr. Civility

“Is pure feeling possible? Can we ever extricate ourselves from culture or do we need it to even think, let alone communicate with others?” So asks the album notes of Rebecca Schiffman‘s fourth full-length Before the Future, coming this summer via Lost Sound Tapes. The record sees the LA-based songwriter grapple with what it means to live a moral life within a society that can appear hellbent on compromising our personal values. Everything from grief, family vacations and the ethics of the pet-owner relationship are explored, but lead single ‘Little Mr. Civility’ turns its attention to the experience of raising a young child. Namely the inevitable influence a parent has in shaping their nascent understanding of the world and its expectations. “The song expresses misgivings about the large responsibility one bears bringing someone into the world,” as Schiffman explains, “and resignation at having to try to shape them so they exist in society.”

Tuxis Giant – Last Laugh

We’ve followed Tuxis Giant for a number of years now, most recently in 2023 with the release of full-length The Old House. “The songs find Tuxis Giant offering a sonic representation of solitude in all of its nuance,” as we wrote. “The inherent safety in being removed from the wider world is challenged by an inevitable anxiety and loneliness, [resulting in] a strangely nostalgic alienation.” Now Matt O’Connor and co. are back with You Won’t Remember This, a brand new LP released via their own label Worry Bead Records (who recently curated True Names, a great compilation for the Trans Youth Emergency Project). Lead single ‘Last Laugh’ provides the first look inside, a short yet no less evocative song about the dangerous allure of self-medication, delivered with Tuxis Giant’s trademark mix of intimacy and heft.

Winter – Just Like A Flower

Recording under the moniker Winter, Brazil-born, New York-based Samira Winter combines gauzy shoegaze and summery pop sensibilities to weave a sound as lush as it is energetic. Following the success of 2022 debut Some Kind Of Blue, Winter returns this summer with new album Adult Romantix on Winspear, and lead single ‘Just Like A Flower’ introduces both the style and theme of the record. The song’s reflective, often melancholic tone is buoyed by an insistent momentum, with Winter contemplating a move from LA to NYC amid the wider progression of young adult life. There are loves and inevitable losses along the way, but the forward motion can never quite be halted.

Describing themselves as “a quixotic mix of American post-punk and ’80s post-hardcore,” East Vancouver Aversions combine heavyweight riffs, pounded percussion and acerbic vocals to comment on our contemporary moment. Loosely based on the visual essay About Face by graphic novelist Nate Powell, Aversions say ‘New Whip’ is a song about “how the impact of generational thinking shapes the people we become, and the beliefs and opinions we’ll go to any lengths to enforce…shin[ing] a light on how toxic masculinity is passed down like a gene.”

bedbugz – if i cried, we’d both drown

Back in June we wrote about Canterbury outfit bedbugz and their self-titled single on Tonetic Records. “With its upbeat rhythm and searching vocals, the title track is a bittersweet tale of young love,” we described, “while the b-side sets out further into shoegaze territory.” The debut bedbugz full-length all hail the goblin king! is out later this week, and lead single, ‘if i cried, we’d both drown’, shows how the band have knitted these styles into something of their own. A sound which owes a debt to both bedroom pop and indie rock without quite belonging to either, and offers a delightful blend of sincere emotion and noisy charm. bmq – Spontaneity

Tokyo‘s bmq have been at work for fifteen years, though it is only now they are releasing their debut full-length album, Order, Spontaneity and the Body. Drawing inspiration from fields as diverse as post-punk, krautrock, ambient and US indie rock, the record feels like it utilises every month of this gestation period, weaving a finely honed style which constantly tests the line between control and volatility. Take single ‘Spontaneity’, which explores the tension between repetition and change with a simmering energy, unpredictable but always harnessed by an understated confidence. The sound of a band who have spent a long time working out what they want to say and how they want to say it.

Burs – Nearly

Back in September, Toronto‘s Burs released their latest album Holding Patterns, a record which blended various shades of indie, folk and dream pop to allow the quartet to explore a myriad of different moods and settings. What resulted was a rich and often ethereal collection of songs able to change with fluid ease, from the vast, spacious opener ‘The Year Now’ to the urgent ‘Lily’. But it is perhaps latest single ‘Nearly’ which best encapsulates the Burs style. The restrained acoustic intro heralding the considerable chemistry of their dual vocal style, the track slowly deepening with subtle layers of textures and warmth.

Out of purgatory darkly shines

Cat Clyde – Mystic Light

Next February sees the release of Down Rounder, the latest album from Ontario‘s Cat Clyde. Writing back in 2019 we described Clyde’s sound as encompassing “everything from folk and rock to blues and jazz, leading to a sound that swaggers with attitude and smoulders with smoky emotion, and lead single ‘Mystic Light’ suggests the new record builds upon these foundations to offer a fresh vision of the country style. One crafted from personal emotion but imbued with something more ancient and mysterious too. Watch the video directed by Laura-Lynn Petrick below:

Caroline Strickland – Invoice

New York’s Caroline Strickland unveiled her debut single, ‘Invoice’, this month. A confessional track which pits deceptions and truths against one another, exploring the ways in which honesty can hurt the hardest, and lies hold small victories of their own. All set within a swirling moment of love persisting beyond a relationship, and a job with zero fulfilment or worth, Strickland’s vocals burning with a smoky intensity as she navigates both. “It makes you feel devastated, feel like letting go,” as Strickland’s own perceptive take puts it, “feel like California, feel like rock and roll.” Coming clean might be cathartic, but creating fictions might just be the best escape route.

Dignan Porch – Electric Threads

Led by South London’s Joe Walsh, Dignan Porch made a name across the 2010s with a distinctive blend of psych rock and fuzz pop, working with labels such as Captured Tracks and Art Is Hard along the way. With Walsh having now moved to Manchester, next February sees the release of a brand new album Electric Threads, this time a joint release by the stellar trio of Hidden Bay, Repeating Cloud and Safe Suburban Home Records. The title track gives a glimpse into the newest iteration of the project. A combination of earnest emotion and off-kilter playfulness which refuses to recognise any distinction between fun and melancholy.

Lina K.O. – Two-Player Mode

Brooklyn-based artist Lina K.O. is gearing up to release new EP Earth Apple next month, and the latest single serves as a great introduction to her sound. Falling on the rockier side of what she herself describes as “digitally-infused melancholic indie,” the song combines Bridgers-esque indie folk with a grungy weight to achieve its delightfully ambiguous tone. Where doubt and assurance act as perfect counterbalances against one another, Lina K.O. singing with reflective wisdom even within the confusing immediacy of the moment. Luke De-Sciscio – The Tourist

There are prolific songwriters and then there is Luke De-Sciscio. Reaching double figures of full-length albums at only thirty, De-Sciscio has consistently honed his work and challenged prior expectations, forever circling around that elusively perfect way in which to communicate what needs saying. Through a series of highs (e.g. being booked to support the likes of Cat Stevens and Jose Feliciano) and lows (the COVID-induced cancellation of said shows), he has not stopped in this search, and new album if one thing were different, nothing would be the same feels like the closest he’s yet come to reaching that mythical ideal. Take closer ‘The Tourist’, seven minutes plus of stark passion and poignance. The culmination of everything which has been before.

Niall Summerton – Human, Dying

You would be forgiven for taking a quick listen to the work of Leeds-based songwriter Niall Summerton and concluding his work to be that of warm, easy-going assurance. But as the name of new single ‘Human, Dying’ gives away, his work uses this welcoming richness as way into the weightier, darker themes of the human experience. With new album What Am I Made Of? coming soon via Tiny Library Records, the new song offers the perfect example of this style. Confronting the heaviest question of them all, Summerton threads anxieties around mortality into the textures of the everyday, and in doing so not only captures a compassionate view of the subject but also something of its pervasive, ever-present weight.

What Am I Made Of? will be release in April 2023 via Tiny Library Records.

Stella Rose – Angel

Following on from the success of debut single ‘Muddled Man’ a few weeks ago, New York-based singer, poet, and musician Stella Rose has shared brand new track, ‘Angel’, via Kro Records. After the insistent energy of the first single, ‘Angel’ offers an altogether more reflective tone, swapping out the electrified intensity for something slower and richer. What results is a strange ode to melancholy, exploring how sadness can serve as the shadow to highlight the brighter parts of life. The song comes with a video directed by Primordialfreaks, who explains how the film aimed to capture the light and dark of the song. “It’s a sad but also triumphant song, like a celebration of loss and loneliness and how the most difficult things can make life more pure in a strange sort of way.”

‘Angel’ is out now via Kro Records.

Sun Kin – I Know This One

We’ve written a fair bit about Kabir Kumar’s Sun Kin this year, from the upbeat pop of single ‘I Wanna Believe‘ to the deep, thematically rich ambient styles of painting whales part 1  and 2. Somewhere in the mix Kumar found the time to release another single, ‘I Know This One’, ironically a song about the creative frustrations which emerge when you set the bar too high and push every new piece to be a genre-bending prototype. Luckily, there’s an antidote to such a malady—dropping any notions of genius and appreciating the simple joys of life. Namely hanging out with your cat.

how i can’t behave
right in front of you
there sits a bowl of your food
i poured in the morning
of this blessed day

Whereas most dream pop is dreamy in the sense of those illogical, immensely meaningful sequences familiar to films and novels, Ama Moii’s new album Flown is more reminiscent of the everyday dreams you don’t bother to share. ‘Your Shoes’ sets the tone, a delicate track centred around hushed vocals and simple lyrics, like an Appalachian folk song rewritten to help children sleep, and ‘Snow Bird’ is equally soft, sounding like something by Mountain Man if the band were only allowed to whisper.

“Snow bird
come back to my home.
I’m waiting for you”

‘Lemon’ is a frivolous contemplation of the fruit that could only occur in a daydream during the most boring of afternoons, while ‘She Greeted the Cloud’ plays like a fable with an obscure message. ‘If You Want To Go’ brings to mind a lullaby cover of Andy Shauf, and ‘Wind’ is a gentle instrumental track, playing like a breeze through neighbourhood. The lullaby theme returns on the final track ‘Night Melody’,

“It’s time to go to sleep
laying on bed in the closet”
