]]> As we mentioned in our favourite albums post, producing end of year lists is a task verging on impossible, given the sheer volume of great music that has passed through our ears in the past twelve months. Still, it’s a nice way to look back and collect some of the stuff that really stuck with us, not to mention give the briefest mention to the good stuff we didn’t get a chance to cover, so without further ado here is a list of our favourite songs of 2017. They’re in alphabetical order, because trying to mould such a long list into cohesive playlist isn’t worth the effort, so feel free to dip in and out as you please.

]]> Other Songs Music Co. is a folk label based in Hamilton, Ontario. Buy some good music now and fund even more good music down the line.

The album contains twenty tracks from all your favourite Other Songs Music Co. artists – in no particular order: Timid, The Brave, James Hoffman, Ruby Randall, The Good Hunters, JP Haynie, Best Wishes, Nabi, Benjamin, Matt Paxton and label leader Scott Orr. There are b-sides, demos, live recordings, remixes and previously unreleased tracks. Check out two of my current favourites below:

 

The digital album is available alongside a smorgasbord of extras, from guitar picks and buttons to custom records and lifetime discount coupons. ]]> Timid, The Brave is a project by Tim Selles of Hamilton, Ontario. He has just released his debut album, the self-titled Timid, The Brave, on Other Songs Music Co. (which is a great little independent label based in Hamilton which has put out a lot of really good folk and acoustic releases since its inception in 2005 – I’d highly recommend checking out the other artists on their roster). This is introspective folk in the vein of Noah Gundersen or Right Away Great Captain and certainly holds its own among such comparisons. The blurb on the label’s website says that these are “songs that wrestle with the disappointments of failure, the allure of departure, and the complexities of faith” and that’s a pretty good overview of the atmosphere and feel of the record. The album was produced by Selles and Scott Orr, another Other Songs Music Co. artist who I’ve been a fan of for a while now.

Head over to Bandcamp to buy a CD of the album for $10 CAD (£6.25), which is more than worth it just for the lovely artwork (some hasty research shows it to be an oil painting by Rockwell Kent that was completed around 1925). The album is also available for download for $8 CAD (£5 – which is a steal).
