It’s a mammoth undertaking, featuring 106 “(mostly) original (mostly) unreleased”  tracks from 106 different artists, a number chosen to mark the 106 years since the British Government’s 1917 Balfour Declaration. Obviously, that’s too many artists to list, but rest assured it contains a ton of good stuff, including acts we have featured in the past, such as Swim Camp, Tuxis Giant, Kitchen, Greg Mendez, Bummer Camp, Shunkan and more.

You can only get access to the music by making a direct donation to the PCRF via the donation page. Once you’ve done that, email or DM a screenshot of the donation to Bee Side Cassettes (beesidecassettes@gmail.com) to be sent a download.

Due to overwhelming demand from both artists and donators, Bee Side Cassettes have decided to work on a second compilation, For Gaza Vol. 2. This one will comprise of 75 tracks, symbolising the 75 years since the start of The Nakba, the mass displacement and dispossession of Palestinians by Israeli settlers during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War.

This autumn sees Swim Camp return with Fishing in a Small Boat, a brand new full-length to be released via Know Hope Records which continues this exploratory descent into the intricacies of personal relationships. Rooted in introspective intimacy yet made vivid by Morris’s creative vision, the are songs indebted to the classic bedroom pop aesthetic but able to transcend it. Maintaining the earnestness of the genre but moving past its lo-fi style.

Lead single ‘Melt’ is a perfect example. Opening with a murmured, confessional tone, the sound has all the hallmarks of the genre. Though as the track develops, so does the sound. Lively drums shake the song forward as Molly Germer’s violin hovers behind the vocals, and eventually the various elements coalesce into something bright and clamorous. Something alive.

This year sees the release of Barlow Hill, a second full-length Swim Camp album via Z Tapes, and this sense of emotion is now the cornerstone of the record. The album was engineered and produced by Watter, at the Headroom Studios in Philly, and Morris cites his influence as vital to the final atmosphere of the album. “[Watter was] the key that allowed me to enter into this sort of emotionally muddy world,” he explains, “while maintaining a structural narrative that made sense in a larger context.”

We’re delighted to be able to share the first single, ‘Pretty Bird’. With violin from Molly Germer (who played on Alex G’s most recent record), the song’s mood is striking, executing a deft balance between lonely melancholy and a kind of quiet triumph. “The song is kind of about moving on from being in love with something or someone in a relatively unhealthy way,” Morris explains. “In the narrative of the song it’s all about having the correct perspective on the things in your life and how cathartic it can be to work through this stuff.”

The track comes complete with a video from the ever-impressive Bob Sweeney, where the themes of perspective and moving on are explored further. Rendered in a lovely lo-fi tone, the film sees Morris carry a mysterious box through the woods and eventually bury it in a ritual of letting go. That the box’s contents remain cryptic lends the whole thing further metaphorical weight, standing in for whatever load a person might need to shed in order to find something like peace.
