bathtub cig – Red Pine

Self-described “depression pop band” bathtub cig are an outfit who live up to their name. A project which looks to evoke those private moments of contemplation and small comforts, be they born of wallowing or self-care. Latest single ‘Red Pine’ sees lead Hilary James joined by Skyler Nowinski (bass), Dave Power (drums) and Hannah Hebl (keys) to bring to life one such situation with a mix of indie rock rhythm and bedroom pop tenderness, and culminates in an affirming chorus to match the bright joy of a queer relationship.

The Fourth Wall – Darkness Of Heart

Back in November we previewed Return Forever, the forthcoming album by The Fourth Wall, with single ‘Never a Part’ introducing a record which sees songwriter Stephen Agustin delve deep into the immigrant experience to reveal the difficulties and complications therein. “An attempt to weigh the cost of such an action against what is gained to come to a better understanding of the traumas buried within the process,” as we put it. “What must be given away to make a new start possible?” As the title suggests, latest single ‘Darkness of Heart’ flips the pattern of Conrad’s novella to present a non-Western protagonist’s journey deep into the so-called ‘civilised’ world, only to see the truth behind the illusion of the American Dream. The horror, the horror, indeed. Watch the video by director/cinematographer Maura Campbell-Shun below:

Return Forever will be released later this year via DevilDuck Records.

Linn Koch-Emmery – Ebay Armour

Built on propulsive percussion and vulnerable but confident vocals, ‘Ebay Armour’ is the new single from Swedish artist Linn Koch-Emmery. The first glimpse of a forthcoming LP due this spring, the song is a widescreen slice of indie rock that seems destined for big things with its blend of contemplative songwriting and visceral instrumentation. “This song is about a person close to me, that I never really figured out.” says Koch-Emmery. “Trauma and grief has its own illogical ways. Sometimes we cope with it through substances, others by buying a life sized armour off the internet.”

Little Champion – Like the Earth is Flat

The most recent project of Asheville, North Carolina songwriter Dustin Goldklang, Little Champion draws on a wide range of influences to shape its distinctive earnest style—from the PNW indie scene to New York anti-folk. What results are songs able to exist with both hearts on sleeves and tongues in cheeks, as latest single ‘Like the Earth is Flat’ attests. Taken from the upcoming Little Champion LP Curiosity, the song braids life’s banalities and joys into a seamless thread, searching for peace in a world burning up, caving in, and always trying to sell you something.

I could use a heart attack like the earth is flat
So calm me down
Say it’s okay
Let me go

The Problem With Kids Today – All I Wanna Be

Based in New Haven, Connecticut, The Problem With Kids Today are a trio of “rock and roll delinquents” who make songs that hark back to vintage punk and power pop, with elements of several varieties of pop thrown in for good measure. At the end of the week The Problem With Kids Today will release a new album, Born To Rock, which as its title suggests is chock full of vigorous devil-may-care punk songs. The final single before the record’s release, ‘All I Wanna Be’ sees the band weave some eighties jangle pop influences into their scrappy punk style, taking the foot off the accelerator compared to some of the record’s other tracks, but losing none of the buoyant infectiousness.

Born to Rock will be released this coming Friday and you can order it now from the The Problem With Kids Today Bandcamp page.

SAVAK – Will Get Fooled Again

Next month, Brooklyn post punks SAVAK will release Flavors of Paradise via Ernest Jenning Record Co. and Peculiar Works. Following previous single ‘Leash Biter’, which we said “shows off the brooding swagger and bite of the SAVAK sound, simmering around a taut rhythm and gradually coming to a boil,” the band have unveiled a new single, ‘Will Get Fooled Again’. “There’s always a dude who thinks he’s smarter and better than everyone else,” says joint-lead Michael Jaworski. “Thankfully most people [can] recognize the insecurity behind the charade. This song addresses that insecurity.” It somehow sounds simultaneously catchy and burnt out, adding a sober tinge of anxious melancholy to SAVAK’s usual dynamic post punk. Watch Paul Heck-directed video below:

Flavors of Paradise is due for release on 1st March via Ernest Jenning Record Co. and Peculiar Works. Pre-order it now from the SAVAK Bandcamp page.

Speedy Ortiz – Ranch vs. Ranch

Last year, we featured several songs from Rabbit Rabbit, the latest album from Speedy Ortiz on Wax Nine Records, with tracks like ‘Scabs‘ and ‘Ghostwriter‘ showing a band at the height of their game. Caustic and empathetic, crushing and affirming, the album had it all, but one perhaps understated feature of the Speedy Ortiz sound is how much fun it possesses. New single ‘Ranch vs. Ranch’ is a celebration of this side of the band, with a video capturing their time in the studio as what feels like a celebration of what the project represents. “Two years ago easily feels like ten to me now, and watching the footage feels like finding a time capsule full of lost gems,” Molholt explains. “It’s a warm reminder of how much fun we had making Rabbit Rabbit, and of how integral the two eponymous ranches—Rancho de la Luna and Sonic Ranch—were to this record.”

Split System – The Drain

Naarm punks Split System return at the end of the week with Vol. 2, their second full-length record of back-to-basics raucous fun. Released across the globe by Legless Records (Australia), Goner Records (USA) and Drunken Sailor (UK/EU), Vol. 2. promises to find a typically Aussie blend of blistering punk and good-time classic rock, what the liner notes describe as “all hooks and glory, all the time.” Third single ‘The Drain’ is a great entrance point for the uninitiated, spiky and infectious with a chorus that seems destined to inspire a thousand beer-soaked yell-alongs. Watch Ben Ulitzka Portnoy’s video below:

Work Wife – Strangers

Based in Brooklyn, Work Wife is the indie rock project of Meredith Lampe, Cody Edgerly and Kenny Monroe. In April, Work Wife will release Waste Management, a new EP via Philly label Born Losers Records. The follow-up to 2022 debut Quitting Season, the band say the record is about “living in New York, watching the world change rapidly and feeling like you should too, wandering in and out of friendships and relationships and locations and moments.” Lead single ‘Strangers’ is the perfect introduction, a warm and introspective song of trying to find yourself in the vast bustle of the city amidst its noise and countless strangers. It builds across its almost three-minute runtime, ending in a thumping singalong finale. Watch the soothingly minimal video below:

Back in April we shared ‘Scabs‘, the first new song from Speedy Ortiz in five years, which we described as a “wryly humorous and downright furious attack on those whose activism starts and ends with empty words and public gestures.” The single was the first from Rabbit Rabbit, a brand new full-length coming next month via Wax Nine Records which finds Sadie Dupuis and co. at their most searing and expansive. Long time touring members Andy Molholt (guitar), Audrey Zee Whitesides (bass), Joey Doubek (drums) are welcomed into the fold as full contributors for the first time, and the result sees them draw on influences like post-hardcore and alternative metal to find the perfect balance between weight and melody.

As ‘Scabs’ suggested, the record sees Dupuis explore large issues with a personal eye, and latest single ‘Ghostwriter’ is perhaps the most direct example. A song which focuses on a central tension of being alive and active within the contemporary moment. Because while anger is the only logical response to a world marked by widespread injustice and climate-based catastrophe, it is also an exhausting emotion to live with. The risk is getting caught between stations, too angry to rest, too tired to act, and here Dupuis attempts to navigate the experience in manner which might allow for some degree of longevity. “While ‘Ghostwriter’ ruminates on the horrible realities that stoke my anger,” she explains, “it’s also about trying to live with less rage in the day-to-day. And not always succeeding, but not getting mad about that, either. And sometimes directing that angry adrenaline toward positive actions.”

The track comes complete with a video directed by Alex Ross Perry which features a whole host of guest appearances. From musicians like Ted Leo, Spencer Peppet (The Ophelias), Nicola Leel (Doe/Customer), Kate Meizner (Jobber) and Zoë Brecher (Sad13/Bruce Springsteen), to authors such as Rax King, Amy Rose Spiegel and merritt k, through to cartoonist Jason Adam Katzenstein and comedians Josh Gondelman and Emily Panic. Not to mention fellow United Musicians and Allied Workers organizers Spencer Compton and Marshall Moran. See who you can spot in the crowd below:

Arena Rock Appetizer, the new EP from LA‘s Bridey (coming this summer on Anxiety Blanket Records), is a release which explores the sensation of “coming out of a fog.” “Sometimes it’s tough for me to see the light from whatever tunnel I’m in at the time,” she explains. But the EP fuses heartfelt emotion and upbeat energy, not only acting as a reminder of the promising glow somewhere down the line, but moreover having fun while doing so. Lead single ‘Her’ channels such a spirit, written after travelling to stay with her sister and newborn niece after a downer spell, finding some healing magic within the act of caring for other people. “It was intense and tiring and so cool,” Bridey explains. “I even bought a book about becoming a doula, but I never finished it. Maybe one day.”

dani mack – Nothing Better

We first wrote about Texas-born songwriter dani mack back in 2022 with the release of ‘someday‘, a track we described as displaying “a careful balance between strength and vulnerability,” where the “bright and disarmingly straightforward sound star[ed] the past straight in the eye and refus[ed] to blink.” Mack is now preparing to release her debut EP on Future Gods, and latest track ‘Nothing Better’ offers another assured and introspective glimpse into the personal. Though this time the slow-burning build carries with it a certain wry humour too, facing up to the chronic habit of overthinking. “What a lovely idea / letting go of things / that we have absolutely no control of,” she sings with a calm remove, “but I think I’m going to pass / and just drive myself mad / completely fucking mad.”

Juan Wauters – Modus Operandi

This summer, Uruguayan songwriter Juan Wauters is releasing his new album Wandering Rebel on Captured Tracks. Whether he be in Latin America, travelling north to collaborate with the likes of Mac DeMarco and Homeshake, or on the endless road of the tour, Wauters leads a nomadic existence—the titular wandering rebel manifest. Latest single ‘Modus Operandi’ captures some of the restless energy that marks his career. Wauters invites Frankie Cosmos into the fray for an earnest back-and-forth on place and movement, and reasons why people might leave and stay put in any one location.

See, it might be just my opinion
But it’s happened time and time again
That when it gets rough out here
People that have options go back to their suburbs
To them it was just like some kind of Disney World
Some kind of commodity
Dust them off a little bit
And see their real M.O.
Their modus operandi
Modus operandi

Watch Fatos Marishta’s video below as Wauters and Cosmos try to locate one another between NYC and Montevideo:

paper bee – I Don’t Talk To You

paper bee, the indie rock project led by Nick Berger, haven’t released a proper record since their 2015 debut Now I Know You and See How Wide You Are to the World, a split release with Loone. When the pandemic hit, Berger and a new lineup of bandmembers (including Maryn Jones of All Dogs/Yowler and Radiator Hospital‘s Sam Cook-Parrott) quarantined together in a cabin in rural Pennsylvania and recorded a brand new album, Thaw, Freeze, Thaw, which will be released by Get Better Records later this spring. Berger, who took his first shot of testosterone two days after wrapping up recording, describes the record as ” the last documentation of my old singing voice which I loved a lot […] a story about love and harm between traumatized trans people.”

Pre-order it now from the paper bee Bandcamp page.

Ryan Bourne – 100 Years

With new LP Plant City coming later this spring, Calgary‘s Ryan Bourne has unveiled latest single ‘100 Years’ to introduce another dimension of the album’s diverse sound. Because though the record spans glam rock, garage pop and baroque styles, the single highlights the psych folk spirit central to its sound. An idiosyncratic mood achieved via a woozy amalgamation of synths as well as samples of warped bird calls and the crackle of dried plants, resulting in a sound submerged in reflection. “The lyric came from a golden hour walk overlooking a neighborhood I’d lived and loved (and lost) in,” Bourne explains, “the kind of birds eye view of the landscape lending a beautiful sense of futility to the memory as it rose.” Watch the video by Rebecca Reid and Bourne himself below:

Plant City is out on the 5th May and you can pre-order it now.

Selah Broderick – I Am

Having been born into a strict Catholic family only to be freed by the countercultural turn of the sixties and seventies, Selah Broderick followed a love of music and art around the country, though ultimately put her own aspirations on hold when falling pregnant with her children. Fast forward a number of decades and Pegdoll Records are releasing Moon In The Monastery, a collection of songs by Selah Broderick ranging from the late seventies to the contemporary moment, as collected by her son Peter Broderick and featuring music from him and his sister Heather Woods Broderick. Single ‘I Am’ hints at the richness and depth of the work, with Peter’s neo-classical backdrop supporting Selah’s poetic spoken word inspired by her deep interest in non-Western spirituality.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q6AdLPVJAYc&ab_channel=PegdollRecords

Moon In The Monastery is out on the 9th June via Pegdoll and you can pre-order it now.

Speedy Ortiz – Scabs

Their first new music in five years, ‘Scabs’ is the latest single from indie rock cult heroes Speedy Ortiz, released via Wax Nine, the Carpark Records imprint record label and poetry journal run by lead Sadie Dupuis. What Dupuis describes as a song “about self-designated ethicists who don’t quibble about crossing a picket line for individual benefit,” ‘Scabs’ is a both wryly humorous and downright furious attack on those whose activism starts and ends with empty words and public gestures. “Born-to-scab solipsists are boogying for big commission,” as the opening goes. “Yes in your backyard you take handshake squeezes to extremes. Nihilistic greeting to a flytrap hungry for a fist. Don’t talk to me. Don’t talk.”

‘Scabs’ is out now via Wax Nine Records and is available from the Speedy Ortiz Bandcamp page.

Sun Kin x Guppy – I’m in the Band

Described as a “cross-collaboration” between Kabir Kumar’s LA post-pop project Sun Kin and punk band GUPPY (with whom Kumar plays lead guitar), ‘I’m in the Band’ is something of a meta-single. A song about writing songs, and all the ickiness which comes with such a revealing experience. The music was written in collaboration with Miguel Gallego (aka Miserable chillers) and Guppy frontperson J Lebow helped with the lyrics, which they says are about “how expressing yourself through music can be a vulnerable and embarrassing affair, but worth it for the self-esteem it can give, and the relief of pressure it provides for the people who love us.”

I’m in the Band by Sun Kin
‘I’m in the Band’ is out now and available from the Sun Kin Bandcamp page.

Your Heart Breaks – Snow Dusted Ponies

Led by musician, artist and filmmaker Clyde Petersen, Your Heart Breaks is a project based in a Bellingham “townie dream house” which gave artists the space to experiment outside of pressures and expectations. Released via Kill Rock Stars, new album The Wrack Line feels like the culmination of years of friendships and memories, as typified by the line-up which brought it to life. With a band consisting of Eli Moore and Ashley Eriksson (of LAKE) and Katherine Paul (Black Belt Eagle Scout), as well as a stellar line-up of guest stars including the likes of Kimya Dawson, Christine Fellows, John K. Samson, R.Ring and Nana Grizol‘s Theo Hilton, the album is a sonic manifestation of something larger. Single ‘Snow Dusted Ponies’ gives an indication of the tone, with Fellows and Samson backing Petersen’s vocals in their affirming sincerity.

Various Swell Sounds is a new collaborative playlist series from Shana Hartzel of Swell Tone, Jon Chin of Cereal and Sounds, and myself. Instead of constantly exchanging tracks amongst each other, we have decided to work together to bring them to more ears. Every month, we will match a selection of our old and brand new favourites to a specific theme, as decided on a revolving basis month by month.

It only comes around every four years, so this month we’ve hopped aboard the World Cup hype train. We encountered a bit of a hitch when realising that there aren’t a wealth of football/soccer related indie tunes, especially when 2/3 of the curating team reside in the US. Thus, Beautiful Games was born, a playlist that widens the net to encompass all sports, and plays a little loose with the sound and style, meaning this might not the most cohesive list you’ll ever get from us. Still, that’s cool. The World Cup is all about a diverse clash of styles, after all.

Find the tracklisting below, though due to Spotify’s limited library, that version isn’t quite complete.

Old Earth

“Has this trance-like quality that is almost impossible to describe…It’s music that isn’t satisfied with making pretty sounds in the background, that gets right to the root of things” – New EP …until they’re called sees Old Earth in typically scintillating form.

The Washboard Abs

“Sad but in a cosy, reassuring way…like being alone in an empty room on a rainy afternoon, when the not-quite-twilight has that blue-grey quality and the only sounds are raindrops on the glass and the shooooshing of passing cars” – WHATEVERLAND by The Washboard Abs is the second great Z Tapes release in a week.

The Tarantula Waltz

“Reminds us that no matter how hard, life holds pockets of goodness and wonder, providing moments of fierce, bright joy which light up the dark” – Lynx EP by Swedish folkster The Tarantula Waltz

Molly Drag

“Sad and remorseful in a child-like sort of way, the existential anxiety of adults not yet formed so that his grief can occupy a pure, selfless sort of level” – ‘Open Casket Hidden Meaning’, the brand new track by Molly Drag.

Furnsss

“A return of the gloriously sloppy rock that Furnsss purvey” – Burlington lo-fi rock act announce new EP via our good pals at 80N7.

Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats

“Continues with the jaunty, boisterous vibes that set apart Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats from his solo work, sounding like mid-barroom, drunk-but-honest proclamations” – Nathaniel Rateliff gathers his band in anticipation of their debut EP.

Aidan Knight

“Starts off as a smooth and kinda groovy soft rock track which threatens several crescendos before the horned-filled celebratory climax around the halfway mark” – Aidan Knight has put out a new song in preparation for his third album, coming this autumn on Outside Music.

Small Houses

“So here’s the deal. You pledge on small amount of money in return for a digital download pre-order, and Quentin gets to make a new record and eat something other than craisens” – Small Houses needs your help on GoFundMe to make his new album.

Eskimeaux

“It’s about finally feeling okay with not feeling okay” – Impose has a substantial piece on Eskimeaux’s new album, O.K.

The Epoch

“A sweet, introspective sort of songwriting is the tendency, though hardly the rule. As an inspiring support system and model for artistic collaboration, their cult following is quickly growing” – The Epoch Collective find themselves in good company in Brooklyn Magazine’s round-up of the twenty people defining Brooklyn music in 2015.

Matheny / Molina

“Molina always seemed to know exactly which cards not to show, and with his deep body of work created music that is somehow both haunting and comforting in equal measure” – William Matheny of Southeast Engine shares his memories of Jason Molina and serves up a great cover of ‘Just Be Simple’, all over at Common Folk Music.

Best of 2015

A week late on this but the ever-reliable Gimme Tinnitus has put together a list of the best music of 2015 thus far. Well worth digging through to uncover a few unheard gems.

Nick Cave / DrFasutusAU

A few weeks late on this but it’s worth sharing: Artist DrFaustusAU has drawn a Dr Seuss-style cartoon version of Nick Cave’s ‘Red Right Hand’. You can read more about it on Faster Louder or click the image below to see the whole storybook.

Protest Music

“A reminder that soulful dissent can be both entertaining and politically efficacious. Soulful protest is the work of skillful musicians using their gifts and raising their voices to recreate the world so that everyone has an opportunity to fully participate and no one else’s voice ever again has to remain suppressed or unheard” – Jason King over on at NPR Music has put together 100 hours of protest music, using R&B and the genres which came before that helped form the genre.

Frog

“An attempt to engage modern musical ideas from a 1950s style of arrangement… [it] was a complete failure in that respect but a success in most others” – The Line of Best Fit are streaming Kind Of Blah, the new album from Frog that could well be the soundtrack of your summer.

Summer Camp

“Inspired by 90s Point Horror and Fear Street books and teen horror films, and the idea that a bad relationship can be just as terrifying as a serial killer” – Noisey are streaming Summer Camp’s Bad Love before it’s release next week on Moshi Moshi.

Shamir

And finally, Shamir walked around Brooklyn and played some songs for La Blogotheque:

It’s that time of year again, the season of giving your loved ones something to show how much you care. If you disregard the whole hyper-commercialized, $$$-obsessed side of things, that’s actually a rather nice thought. But the problem with Christmas is that the excitement of receiving a present is so short-lived, before you know it it’s all over and you have to wait a whole year for another wonderful gift. This is where Keep In Touch Vinyl Series come to the rescue, providing a sure-fire way to provide happiness and excitement to a friend/relative all year round.

Keep In Touch is a year long subscription series that re-imagines the bygone era of pen pals. Each month you’ll receive a 7” x 7” postcard with a record pressed directly into a full color image curated by that month’s artist.

Just to clarify- the postcard can be played on your turntable! If you’re as impressed with that as I am then you’ll be rushing off to sign up right now. There is already an impressive list of confirmed contributors – including:

The So So Glos
Sadie Dupuis of Speedy Ortiz
Ava Luna
Cloud Nothings
Ricky Eat Acid
Mutual Benefit
Big Ups
Into It. Over It.
TOPS
Girlpool

…and lots of more!

So if you know someone who likes really cool music, and you think that someone would like to receive said really cool music in the post every month (on a musical postcard!), then why not sign them up to Keep In Touch? They’ll have that Christmas-morning feeling once a month for a whole year!

Subscribe now on the KIT website. Do it before the 21st December to be in with the chance of winning a second subscription (you can keep TWO friends happy!)
