It’s time for our monthly round-up of some of the slower, quieter releases that have been floating our boats this month.

Bro. Stephen – The Shape

First up is a brand new double A-side single from Bro. Stephen. The follow up to 2012’s excellent Baptist Girls, these two tracks address the strain of long-distance friendship, transient life and uncertainty of the future. This may sound a little sad, and it is in parts, but the songs also manage to find a sense of hope, a glimmer in the storm clouds. You can buy the single right now via Crossroads of America Records.

Nate Hendricks – Neon For No One

Out on the excellent Crash Symbols, Nate Hendricks’ Neon For No One defies any clear genre. Opening track Dead Fox Waltz is a clear example of this, the sprawling ten minute epic having a little bit of everything, from experimental glitches, to folky, psychedelic guitars and even sleigh bells. The artwork is relevant for this EP, a crazy, colourful collage the holds fine details. Buy it on cassette here.

Sad Souls – ‘Rain, Window’

Ann Arbor’s ambient outfit Sad Souls released a new song back in March. ‘Rain, Window’ is a wistful instrumental track that would be perfect for, well… watching from a window as rain falls. Check out the rest of their music on Bandcamp, it is all just as lovely.

Thom Byles – Y.O.Y.O (You’re Only Young Once)

Back in April we featured English/Mexican singer-songwriter Thom Byles. Well here he is again, back with a brand new single, ‘Y.O.Y.O (You’re Only Young Once)’. The track is excellent, a gentle, airy, nostalgic little indie pop song. Perfect for these bright early-Summer mornings. You can get the track for however much you like over at Byles’s Bandcamp page.

Johan Hedberg – Kickar grus

Johan Hedberg, who you may know from Suburban Kids with Biblical Names, is releasing a solo album Paradiset this September on Labrador Records. The first single, ‘Kickar grus’ is coming out 25th June, and you can hear it below.

Born Standing Up – S/T

Finally we have Born Standing Up from Oxford, Mississippi. Their S/T album, out March this year, is a great alt-folk/country record that sounds like The Wooden Sky covering country songs. It’s as good as it sounds. You can get the album on a pay-what-you-can basis here.

The second part of our summer mixtape. The idea behind the mix was to capture the cyclical nature of the ideological endless summer; Part I took you from early morning to late afternoon and Part II (hopefully) picks up the baton and carries on into the night. It’s a rather eclectic mix with the four of us here each picking a few songs. The first few songs see you through early evening before an electronic-driven party atmosphere arrives. Catch a lift home with Ryan Gosling through the neon-drenched city and sit outside and watch the stars pass. See through the dead of night with Jason Molina before sunrise with Trouble Books. Hopefully you can then loop both mixes so the ‘day’ starts again. I’ve written a little bit more about the idea here.

Hope this works out.

Again, please support the artists on this mix. Our intention is to share our favourite music with others so hopefully you like what you hear and buy some records.

We tried to do something a bit different with this mix and we’d love your opinion on the idea/track listing. Does it work at all or fall flat on it’s face? Do you have any good themes for a future mixtape? Let us know on Twitter, Facebook or the clunky Tumblr message system. We would love to hear from you.

Apeiron is the Greek for unlimited, infinite or indefinite, and in choosing it as his title for his latest release, Sad Souls seems to have captured the idea of his sound perfectly.

Sad Souls is Ann Arbor’s Tom Auby and Apeiron his fourth release, following hot on the heals of Object of Perception, Precious Paragon and Forest Loops, all released during 2011. It’s a meditative piece, full of looping guitars and judging by an interview Auby gave with Dénouements back in December, that’s exactly what he was aiming for. “I wanted the songs to fade in and out of existence from a common space. I think melancholy is a really nice thing sometimes. While the other records were born out of a sense of anxiety or sadness, this one is a lot more reflective and contemplative. A lot of it is inspired just by how quickly time seems to pass to me, and I want Apeiron to be a record people can turn to when they feel anxious or worried, and when they forget how boundless the world actually is.”

Lofty aims but Apeiron leaves you time and space to just settle down. It’s the musical equivalent of creature comforts and we all need some of those.

Take a listen to Windows and Churches up top, and look forward to the records physical release on February the 15th. Until then, you can stream the whole thing at the Sad Souls bandcamp page. Just click here.
