Gabriel Izak – Sin Eater

Based in Humboldt County, California, songwriter and producer Gabriel Izak makes contemplative, emotionally earnest songs which fall in the centre of a venn diagram between folk, pop and rock. Latest single ‘Sin Eater’ is the ideal entry point for the uninitiated, embodying the spirit of the project and the mood which results. It traces how personal pain so often has familial roots, and how one might go about absolving themselves of this weight. “[I] wrote this three years ago, after I had a conversation where someone told me I should visualize sending family guilt ‘up to the cosmic compost heap’,” Izak explained in an Instagram post. “Couldn’t manage to fit that line in a song but wanted to write about intergenerational stuff. And how it can feel like you don’t deserve to move through it and let go, but you totally do.” Supporting vocals from Marley Jarvis only deepen the emotion of the track, and fans of acts like Big Thief and Hovvdy are sure to find plenty of admire.

Cut the cord, but still we’re tied
To the shame of legacy
Prehistoric, hollow eyed
No man is my enemy
And all I ever wanted was to set you free

JJJJJerome Ellis – Evensong, Part 1 (for and after June Kramer)

“A space carved out of the hectic every day into which the listener is invited, Ellis using the album as a kind of intermission within ordinary time where we might consider histories both personal and communal, as well as those of the natural world, and thus come to honour and understand ourselves more faithfully.” So we wrote of Vesper Shadow, the new album by JJJJJerome Ellis coming next month via Shelter Press. In the preview, published back in September, we described how the title track “breath[es] new life into the Gospel mainstay ‘His Eye is on the Sparrow’ in a way only Ellis could” to introduce “the dynamic between detail and space which marks Vesper Sparrow, but also the sense of reverence and possibility inherent within the style.” With the record’s release steadily approaching, Ellis has unveiled album opener ‘Evensong, Part 1 (for and after June Kramer)’ to allow audiences another glimpse inside. “The stutter can be a musical instrument,” they say in the opening line, before proceeding the prove the statement with such invention and grace.

Vesper Sparrow by JJJJJerome Ellis
Vesper Sparrow will be released on the 14th November via Shelter Press and you can pre-order it now from the JJJJJerome Ellis Bandcamp page.

Jordan Whitlock & Memory Spells – False Lights (Reprise)

“Suffused with the lush, shadowy grandeur of Lynch at his most romantic.” That’s how we’ve described collaboration between Jordan Whitlock and Matt Bauer‘s Memory Spells, tracks like ‘Take My Hand‘ and ‘Heaven and Here‘ demonstrating an orchestral, cinematic brand of folk rock fit to support the poetic songwriting of the duo. New song ‘False Lights (Reprise)’ reimagines a track from Bauer’s 2015 album Dream’s End, evoking the old maritime legend of wreckers luring vessels onto rocks in order to plunder their goods to explore more personal ideas of loss and ruin. As you might expect from such a description, the track sits at the darker, more melancholic end of the project’s spectrum, though within its tales of deception and devastation flickers something more hopeful or defiant too. A true light to match the malicious mimic, however black the night.

Oh how many wrecks like
Run aground chasing all false lights
Broken apart with want
For what‘s not there’s to have?
From the shore, strangers rifle their pockets
Rip the lockets from around their necks
Gentle waves lap the decks
And still the stars shine ever brighter

Joyer – At the Movies

We’ve featured a couple of tracks from Joyer‘s new album On the Other End of the Line… in recent weeks, with ‘Cure‘ showing how the pair have “sand[ed] down the shoegaze scale of the previous record while maintaining its pop melodies […] pushing the Joyer arrangements into newly ambitious territory.” While ‘Glare of the Beer Can‘ “sit[s] in [the] half space between reality and daydream,” as we wrote, “breathing a sense of romance into the ordinary, even if the longing at its heart seems destined to go unsatisfied for a good period yet.” With the album coming soon via Julia’s War Recordings, the duo have returned with ‘At the Movies’, a song which paints another method of retreating from life’s pressures. Where its predecessor used romance as a way to overcome the everyday, the new song champions the safe harbour of the pictures. A space away from the world, even existence itself, if only for a few hours.

Lisa SQ – Make It Up to You

Recording under the moniker Lisa SQ, Montreal-born, Hamilton-based multidisciplinary artist Lisa Savard-Quong creates indie rock with an avant garde edge, bending the conventions of the genre with a playful, curious and slightly surreal personality. With debut album Reel Me In coming next month, Lisa SQ has released new single ‘Make It Up to You’ to introduce the style. A delightfully bittersweet ode to self-destructive tendencies brought to life with a team of friends and collaborators, including Tyler Kyte, Adam Hindle and Michael Brushy (all of Dwayne Gretzky fame), Simeon Abbott and producer Ian Docherty (July Talk). “Tyler Kyte (Dwayne Gretzky) and I were talking about people who always invite drama into their lives, and I kept picturing these classic tragic heroes, doomed but relatable,” as Savard-Quong explains. “The song grew out of that and my own pacing, daydreaming, and writing in the attic.”

Rivulets – Came

Under the moniker Rivulets, Portland, Oregon-based songwriter Nathan Amundson has created stark, emotionally charged music which sits at the intersection of folk, slowcore and electrified rock for several decades. Latest single ‘Came’ sits at the dark, downbeat end of this spectrum, a lonely song stripped back to its essential features, the guitar and murmured vocals enveloped by a shadowy emptiness, as though the real weight of the sound lies in its negative space. Amundson’s voice plays within this atmosphere as something hushed and half-defeated, his questions rhetorical and addressed to nothing but the night itself. Like the words of a man clinging on through the dark hours in the hope of glimpsing some streak of light on the horizon.

Came by Rivulets
‘Came’ is out now and available from the Rivulets Bandcamp page.

roman around – Moves pt.2

We last wrote about roman around (AKA Fresno, CA’s Roman Rivera) a year ago upon the release of full-length The Toll of Unconditional Love on Trailing Twelve Records, describing how the album drew on intensely personal experiences to explore how love can persist and flourish within the most difficult circumstances. Now Rivera is back with brand new release Wish (Tapes EP) which looks to both continue the style and evolve the project to chart new sonic territory. Fittingly, single ‘Moves pt. 2’ serves as a extension of the track ‘Moves’ from the previous album. A meditation on the passage of time which explores not only that which changes but also those things which remain. Not least those features of US policy, be it the long years of military occupation or the contemporary rise of mass deportation.

Silver Liz – Dream More Vivid

Early next year, Brooklyn-based dream pop duo Silver Liz will release III, a brand new full-length album put out on their own Extremely Pure label. Carrie and Matt Wagner have made a name with an imaginative, idiosyncratic style of shoegaze and dream pop, previous albums I Can Feel the Weight and It Is Lighter Than You Think owing as much to the contemporary cutting edge as the nineties classics, expanding the possibilities of a genre often prone to imitation. The new record promises to be their most ambitious to date, embracing a maximalist approach to create something colourful and shifting, each track its own kaleidoscope packed with texture and detail. Listen to lead single ‘Dream More Vivid’ now:

III by Silver Liz
III will be released on the 30th January via Extremely Pure and you can pre-order it now.

Sulka – Halloween

The recording project of Glasgow-based songwriter Lukas Clasen, Sulka originated as a DIY effort, Clasen not only playing all the instruments on the early releases but producing and engineering them too. That era of the project peaked in 2021 with the release of Take Care via Lost Map Records, and by the time 2023 full-length Distractions came around, Sulka was recording in a studio with a full-band for the first time. The first release since that album, latest single ‘Halloween’ finds Clasen still evolving his sound, pairing subdued vocals with an eerie backdrop of distorted guitars and synths to evoke the season of its title. The track which emerges captures the duality of Halloween, where nostalgic comfort meets the shadowy unease of the unknown.

It’s Halloween, we’re out tonight
But your mask can’t hide your eye
I’ve been down, but I’m alright
The world can end, but you’ll survive

We’ve been fans of Nathan Amundson’s Rivulets for a long time, last waxing lyrical back in 2014 when we reviewed his album I Remember Everything. It was an album that combined slowcore (a la Low and Red House Painters) with a more electrified rock, achieving a balance between stirring and sincere that is very hard to come by. Almost exactly four years later Amundson is back with a brand new album, In Our Circle, and we’re pleased to say he has lost none of these talents.

Opening track ‘Everything Goes’ plunges us back into the characteristic Rivulets atmosphere, melancholy infused with a sense of patience, pocked with enough space to allow rumination. Listening feels like floating in a calm ocean bay at midnight, silent save for the hum of other people’s distant lives and the city lights spangling on the water around you.

Built upon on a foundation of snarling guitar, ‘Not Today’ finds Amundson delivering punchy lines in crests of cymbal-heavy crescendo, while ‘Because I Don’t Care’ strips right back into something of a ballad. Emotion is apparent, the immediacy clear in the way Amundson’s vocals strain and drift with regret, lamenting the fact he is destined to hurt even the people he cares about most.

“At times the night it gets so dark
And I wonder where you are
You said take me away from here
You said take me away from here

Because I don’t care
I hurt the ones
I’ll hurt you too
It’s what I do”

There’s a lovely Mazzy Star vibe on ‘Dark Days’ a short and simple track that shifts and sways with a a woozy tenderness, while ‘I Was Lost Before I Met You’ brings to mind Sun Kil Moon with its restrained electric guitar and honest writing (“I was lost before I met you, I was lost, I was in the dark”). Both ‘Sirens’ and ‘You Can Never Come back’ feel more like nods to Jason Molina, a slow-burning sense of doom blooming across the tracks, guitars stinging down like lightning bolts around Amundson’s vocals and the thump of percussion.

‘24’ is something of a change of pace, a lonely acoustic folk song that feels like a late-night whisper compared to the rest of the record. Gone are the electric guitars, the grand percussion, leaving only Amundson’s quiet voice and a sense of stark sentiment. Behind this sits the subtle hiss of ambient noise, a sound barely there yet always there, solitude so keen it vibrates the air around you.

Returning to a richer sound, closer ‘Lucky’ is a love song, although not one of the gooey, sickly variety. Rather, this is a connection hard won, tested by forces both exterior and personal and still refusing to break. The emotion then is not one of heart-melting or head-spinning but a calm disbelief, an assurance not in the ability of another to change your life in epiphanic flashes, but rather the enriching nature of perseverance and generosity.

“We’ve been around
We’ve seen our ups and downs
And I’m thankful
You still put up with me”

City on Fire is the début full-length novel of Louisiana-born author Garth Risk Hallberg, which apparently had ten publishers bidding upwards of $1 million for the right to put it out (Knopf won with a sum close to $2 million). Add to that Jonathan Cape’s six-figure deal here in the UK, the film rights sold to Scott Rudin and the book’s formidable, 900-page length, and you will understand why the good old “Great American Novel” tag was taken off the shelf before the book was even released to reviewers.

Whether Garth Risk Hallberg lived up to the hype is up for debate. I’d suggest there is a certain ‘hype threshold’ past which people will ensure you get a fair share of criticism regardless of what’s between the covers. What is not up for discussion is the beauty of the writing on show, nor is the sheer scope of the world it brings to life. Here we find a network of characters linked by blood or love or sheer chance which grows through schizophrenic POV changes and creative interludes. To give you some idea: There’s Mercer, a man struggling with being gay and black in 1970s New York and his relationship with punk musician/artist William, heir to the Hamilton-Sweeney fortune who’s music with the now-defunct Ex Post Facto “seemed to promise complete freedom, on the condition of complete surrender”. Then there’s William’s estranged sister Regan and her troubled relationship with husband Keith, who are themselves caught up in the Hamilton-Sweeney machine, plus loser-loner Charlie and his friendship with punk cool-kid Sam, and their link to the Post-Humanist Phalanx. That’s not to mention the police detective, the art dealer, the shock jock radio presenter. The investigative journalist, the firework-setter, the transvestite keyboard player. The anarchistic, arsonist cult leader.

So… yeah, it’s all too detailed to review properly, though the key plot is strangely simple. Packed with the sort of suspense/drama you might expect from a film or television show, the book is not as challenging (difficult, ‘literary’) as you might expect. What Hallberg does achieve is to conjure New York at a specific time. The web of characters produce a panoramic snapshot of a generation, palpable nostalgia and a good sprinkling of well-used topics (troubled artists, drug addicts, traumatised and/or damaged lovers) creating a view of the seventies perhaps as we’d like to remember them. The spirit of the book is captured nicely near the beginning, when the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Day :

“For a second the city seemed to lean forward and make contact with a future self: ruined, de-peopled, and nearly still. In a sealed hanger, forensic economists move around numbered lots with scales and callipers. Believing themselves to have evolved beyond delusion and loneliness, beyond illness and longing and sex, they hum distractedly and wonder what it all meant”

As books go, City on Fire is pretty easy to soundtrack, so this playlist could have been a hundred songs. But anyway, here are twenty songs which go some way to capturing the time/place/mood Hallberg created. I’ve included a mix of classics and newer stuff to keep things interesting, and the order isn’t important.

If you have visited our site in the past few months, you will more than likely be familiar with Quiet Constant Friends, a literary-themed compilation in support of the global literacy Worldreader. If you want to read about the project in more detail, you can visit our original post from back in October.

Because we still have a fair amount of tapes left, and obviously want to raise as much as possible for Worldreader, we have decided to run a special holiday offer. So, as suggested below in stylised sans serif, entering the code ‘HOHOHO’ at the checkout on Bandcamp will get you a handsome 40% off both digital and physical copies of the compilation. This will still cover the production cost of the cassette, but remember all profits go to charity, so every extra pound you give will be a pound well spent. To refresh your memory, here’s what you’ll be getting if you put some of your hard earned cash towards Quiet, Constant Friends:

Nathan Amundson has been making emotionally intense indie rock (or “slowcore”) under the moniker Rivulets since releasing his debut album on Low’s Chairkickers Union label back in 2002. His music exists at an intersection somewhere between the minimal indie rock of the aforementioned Low and the morose, reflective folk rock of Mark Kozelek’s Sun Kil Moon. Of course, what Rivulets really sounds like is well… Rivulets. Amundson hasn’t spent over a decade refining his personal style to be an imitation of anyone else. In the words of Low’s Alan Sparkhawk, Rivulets’s latest album I Remember Everythingshows “what happens when someone with a truly unique vision sticks to their guns and proves it.”

The point that I immediately noticed was, despite being labelled with tags such as minimal and slowcore, there is actually some pretty electrifying rock music on display. A good example is opener ‘Reinforced/Delicate’, which starts with some sparse guitar, but eventually blossoms into a fully-fledged rock song. Amundsen and backing singer Margo May offer the repeated refrain of “Are you ready now?” as some kind of plea and guitars swirl around everywhere and big drums come crashing in as the track hits a crescendo around the 2:35 mark. It sounds “big”, almost like the loudest moments of Hospice-era Antlers, or something Strand of Oaks would have shredded his way through before aiming at more conventional indie rock.

Another great track is ‘Ride On, Molina’, presumably a tribute to the great man which is primarily a really good rock song, seven and a half minutes of catharsis. The second half is almost devoid of vocals, an entirely instrumental guitar jam. But despite these louder, rock leanings, the song never strays from what Amundsen has carved out so far in his career. There is a sense of patience and of space, and this is perhaps a testament to the confidence of a musician who knows exactly what he is trying to do in his music. Imagine one of Molina’s Magnolia Electric Co. tracks beamed through the prism of the whole minimal/slowcore canon, and you come close to describing it.

‘My Favourite Drug is Sleep’ is a hibernation anthem for the oncoming winter, in which Amundsen sings, “Now that night is getting cold enough, to go to bed with all the windows shut, under blankets I can burrow deep, and be reminded that my favourite drug is sleep.“ And this goes some way to describing Amundsen’s work as a whole. I Remember Everything always maintains that wistful air of sadness, but often in a glorious, life-affirming way. It’s melancholy as comfort, be it through kinship or catharsis or both. It’s an album that you could play to tap your feet and silently rock out on the train, but also one to listen to when your soul is hurting and you just want to stare out of a window to make things seems okay. This is a difficult combination to achieve and one which signals a very, very good album.

You can buy I Remember Everything from the Rivulets Bandcamp page, either as a digital download or on limited edition 12” vinyl. Europeans can get it via Jellyfant Records.

The Fire is the brand new single from Nathan Amundson’s Rivulets, his first release since the great We’re Fucked in 2011. Amundson has promised a new album in 2014, although ‘The Fire’ is a standalone single and so won’t be making an appearance.
