<p>The recording project of <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/chicago/">Chicago</a>-based songwriter Ben Groth, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/the-child-of-eve/">The Child of Eve</a> is preparing to release the full-length <em>Sozo</em> this summer. The record was brought to life together with Grammy Award winning engineer Ben Rawlins and Northern Ireland Music Prize winning engineer Caolán Austin, not to mention drummer Matt Carroll (Finom), bassist Eli Broxham (The Arcadian Wild), vocalist Sara Di Bella (Anuna) and violinist Gareth Quinn Redmond (Glen Hansard, Ye Vagabonds), and the result is every bit as assured as you might expect from such a talented outfit. Take latest single &#8216;I&#8217;m Here&#8217;, a song which explores feelings of fear and the ways in which can come to influence our very identity. &#8220;This song addresses a kind of fear I wrestle with,&#8221;  Groth explains. &#8220;One that convinces me to question my worth, to wear a mask and hide myself away. That I’m embarrassing to others.&#8221; But rather than allow himself be consumed by the fear, he instead confronts the feeling. Decides to walk through it no matter how uncomfortable it might be.</p>

<p>Rising from the ashes of Sue Your Landlord and featuring Emily Cabarle, Dog Shaped is a new band announcing itself on the <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/new-york/">New York</a> scene, and debut single &#8216;Reason&#8217; serves as their calling card. Described by the band as &#8220;a love letter and a longing to reconnect with lost childlike wonder,&#8221; the track looks to wriggle free from the difficulties and isolation that so often comes with adulthood and instead return to something more tender and curious. What if loneliness need not be the default setting of our existence? What if there&#8217;s a path back to kindness and connection once more?</p>

<p>&#8220;A bittersweet slice of wistful reflection, with Soles evoking that strange mix of comfort and loss inherent within any spot of natural beauty.&#8221; So we wrote of <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/ead-wood/">Ead Wood</a>&#8216;s single &#8216;<a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2024/09/13/ead-wood-peace-in-the-pines/">Peace in the Pines</a>&#8216; back in 2024, describing how the Bristol-based project utilised an Americana-adjacent sound to achieve a mood simultaneously upbeat, melancholic and often a little absurd. With new EP <em>Wild Water</em> coming soon via <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/breakfast-records/">Breakfast Records</a>, Soles and co. are back &#8216;Emmeline&#8217;, a single which continues the introspective nature of the project while widening its focus, serving as a bridge between previous record<em> Cash Mountain</em> and whatever new territory Ead Wood charts next. “I wrote &#8216;Emmeline&#8217; during a time when I was touring a lot and constantly heading off somewhere else,&#8221; Wood explains. &#8220;It made me think about what that experience must feel like for the person staying behind. The song is written from my partner’s perspective—that feeling of watching someone rush out the door again while life at home carries on. It’s about love, patience, and the quiet strength of the person who’s always there when you return.”</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Eliza Edens &#8211; Leash</h3>
<p>More than three years since releasing last record <em>We&#8217;ll Become the Flowers</em>, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/brooklyn/">Brooklyn</a>&#8216;s <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/eliza-edens/">Eliza Edens</a> has returned with brand new song &#8216;Leash&#8217;. The standalone single suggests an evolution in style, moving away from the introspective glow of the previous record and stepping into a newfound sassy confidence. &#8220;I’m a goddamn killer, ended many things,&#8221; they sing in the opening line which rather nicely sets the tone, &#8220;fucked up your mind and stole your parents’ wedding ring.&#8221; Insistent bass and peppy percussion buoy things along with irrepressible energy, licks of guitar bursting in at intervals as if a metaphor for the abandonment of self-control at the track&#8217;s heart. &#8216;Leash&#8217; &#8220;is a tongue-in-cheek, breezy rock song that celebrates the shadow self,&#8221; Edens describes, &#8220;our darker impulses, the devil on the shoulder, and the cynic inside us all.&#8221;</p>

<p>After lead track ‘Double Helix&#8217; introduced <em>Mirror At Night B-Sides</em>, a song &#8220;dreamlike and drifting,&#8221; <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2026/03/03/weekly-listening-march-2026-1/">we wrote</a>, &#8220;emerging full of ambiguous meaning as though dug from deep in the distant past or else visiting from some time or space we are yet to encounter,&#8221; <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/eric-angelo-bessel/">Eric Angelo Bessel</a> has now shared its partner single &#8216;Upstate&#8217; to cap off the release. Fans of the project will relish the opportunity to step out of the frame of ordinary existence and delve into this otherworldly soundscape once again. “&#8217;Upstate&#8217; feels like a quiet transmission from somewhere beyond time,&#8221; Bessel explains of the track, &#8220;where memories blur, dreams surface, and sound moves like breath through spaces you can’t quite place but somehow recognize.”</p>

<p>The recording project of Brooklyn-based songwriter and visual artist David DiAngelis, Helenor serves as a vehicle to explore the twin threads of stasis and change that run through any life, and provides space to reflect on age old existential questions with a fresh, contemporary edge. Released via <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/Mtn-Laurel-Recording-co./">Mtn Laurel Recording Co.</a>, new single &#8216;Windshield&#8217; is the ideal introduction for the uninitiated, exploring the ways in which we may or may not alter as we grow and come of age, and the curious comfort which might be found in the answer. “I’ve been spending a lot more of my time with children lately, which feels like a portal but also a mirror,&#8221; DiAngelis describes. &#8220;The mirror part has me feeling like—damn, I’m really not even <em>that</em> much different than who I was at that age. I guess the only way for me to reconcile this is to just remember that every other self-important someone walking by me in New York City is actually just one gigantic child in disguise.&#8221;</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Mark Trecka &#8211; Wake Dance Romance ft. Lead Into Gold</h3>
<p><a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/chicago/">Chicago</a>-born writer, sound artist, performer, and activist <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/mark-trecka/">Mark Trecka</a> has a new record, <em>ROMANCE WAKE NAMING,</em> coming out next month via <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/los-angeles/">LA</a> label The Garrote. Long-time readers will be familiar with his work which roams the outer edges of post-punk, neo-classical and avant garde, combining themes both personal and political in a sound which have said previously &#8220;utilis[es] sound to explore a diverse set of styles and themes in a practice as inventive as it is ambitious.” Collaboration is key to Trecka&#8217;s practice and the new record is no different. This time industrial music legend Paul Barker (Ministry) both produces and features under his alias Lead Into Gold, helping to create a trip-hop-influenced sound that&#8217;s as big and immediate as it is nuanced and experimental. <p><a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/pearla/">Pearla</a> has shared a couple of singles from her upcoming new album <em>Song Room</em> in recent weeks, with &#8216;<a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2026/02/03/weekly-listening-february-2026-1/">Be Around</a>&#8216; and &#8216;<a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2026/03/05/pearla-imagine-your-face/">Imagine Your Face</a>&#8216; introducing a record which inverts the outward view of predecessor <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2024/01/10/albums-we-missed-in-2023/"><em>Oh Glistening Onion, The Nighttime Is Coming</em></a> to instead offer a more introspective style. &#8220;A survey not of the exterior but interior,&#8221; we wrote, &#8220;though one which nevertheless finds a vast world full of strange beauty.&#8221; With the release fast approaching, Pearla is now back with new track &#8216;Loved By Me&#8217; which further grounds the emotional core of the record. “This is a song of unconditional love for someone who is used to measuring their worth by external factors,&#8221; she says. &#8220;I wrote a lot of the songs on this record guided by the question, &#8216;What is it that my body needs to sing?&#8217; In this case, it was an expression of love, directed toward the more tender parts within myself and the people in my life.” Watch the video by Enne Goldstein below:</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Polhawan &#8211; No Sweat</h3>
<p>You might know Tim Rowing-Parker as the songwriter behind acts like Woahnows and Immy, the Bristol-based artist using the later to put out a series of scrappy, surf-inflected releases in recent years. His new project Polhawan is both an evolution and revolution of this style, looking to preserve the immediacy and DIY spirit of Immy while pursuing a newfound polish and depth. The result is clearly Rowing-Parker, but also Rowing-Parker as never seen before. Cryptic, strange, fresh and confident. Take single &#8216;No Sweat&#8217; from debut EP <em>Wild Mountain Time</em>, coming this May via <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/breakfast-records/">Breakfast Records</a>, which takes a sunny, surfy sound and applies it to something altogether more supernatural. “After a few years living in the country, I moved back to the city, and honestly it kinda freaked me out,&#8221; he explains. &#8220;To take the edge off the train station each morning I’d block out the noise with headphones, and for some reason this led to listening to loads of supernatural podcasts. It’s quite funny that people recounting the scariest shit that has ever happened to them seemed more comforting to me than existing alongside fellow commuters in the light of day.&#8221;</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Rare DM &#8211; Compliment</h3>
<p>The moniker Rare DM might be cryptic (does it refer to direct message? Dungeon master? Dance music?), but the music of Brooklyn-based singer, producer and multi-instrumentalist Erin Hoagg is anything but guarded. Leaning mainly on synths, Rare DM creates an immediate, emotionally charged sound which seduces the listener into its embrace before bearing its messy heart, no matter how revealing or intense the process might be. Later this spring, sees the release of new full-length <em>Attention</em>, and single &#8216;Compliment&#8217;  is typical of its sensual, confronting style. &#8220;It is inspired by when you are in a relationship, and someone who you had eyes for (before meeting your s/o) suddenly pays attention to you,&#8221; as Hoagg expands. &#8220;I was sent a suggestive message from someone, and wasn&#8217;t single anymore. As the lyrics share: &#8216;don’t you worry about it for a second, I can take a compliment&#8217; because hey, I don’t want them to feel embarrassed or bad, they didn’t know that I met someone! This all being said… I can’t control if they are thinking of me. &#8216;You can’t have it… but you can imagine it&#8217;.&#8221;</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Shaina Hayes &#8211; Flourish</h3>
<p>When not writing songs or touring, Québec-based artist <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/shaina-hayes/">Shaina Hayes</a> runs a vegetable farm in her hometown, a fact which is more than an interesting tidbit to add to a bio. Because spend any time with Hayes&#8217;s music and you&#8217;ll come to appreciate a kinship between both of these pursuits: an attention to detail, a deep-rooted connection to the land and its life, not to mention an overarching patience that allows her to reflect upon the present with admirable clarity. In preparation for her third full-length, coming soon via <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/Bonsound">Bonsound</a>, Hayes has returned with &#8216;Flourish&#8217;, a suitably earthy, emotive slice of folk which highlights this style perfectly. A well-timed evocation of spring and all of it inherent hopefulness, blooming with an easy warmth as it gestures towards a brighter future of healing and growth. <h3 style="text-align: center;">Will White &#8211; When To Stop</h3>
<p>Songwriter and composer Will White has long been known for his work with other artists. The Maccabees, 86TVs and Great White Shark are among the acts he&#8217;s collaborated with, and he runs a residency at Ron&#8217;s cafe in Peckham which has welcomed everyone from Jasper Llewlyn (of Caroline), Katy J Pearson and Will Rees (Mystery Jets) to Florence Welch, Dry Cleaning and Sam Akpro. Even his own project BLANc practised a certain level of distancing from his personal self. But this May sees White step out into the light on his own for the first time with the release of his debut solo album <em>It’s Easy To Let The Thoughts Gain Ground</em> on <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/state51/">state51</a>. A record which takes all of the knowledge and experience gained through years spend in the heart of the UK&#8217;s artistic community and applies it to his own intimate, reflective brand of indie rock. Latest single &#8216;When To Stop&#8217; captures the spirit of the release, offering a decidedly compassionate tone that is nevertheless shot through which a rising tension too. Like a picture of someone caught between the shadows of the past and an obscure future, wishing to hope for something better while the world rocks and burns.</p>

It’s about that feeling of being ‘too much’—the fear of what would happen when people see what is really within you.” So explained Nicole Rodriguez, AKA Pearla, of single &#8216;Be Around&#8217; from her forthcoming new full-length <em>Song Room</em>. &#8220;This tension between interior and exterior worlds is a key concern of the record,&#8221; we wrote in <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2026/02/03/weekly-listening-february-2026-1/">our preview</a>. &#8220;Notably how the outside threatens to change the inside, the ways in which love might expand or collapse us, and the relative impacts of resisting this change or else submitting to its inevitable pull.&#8221;</p>
<p>The style is in many ways an inversion of Pearla&#8217;s debut <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2024/01/10/albums-we-missed-in-2023/"><em>Oh Glistening Onion, The Nighttime Is Coming</em></a>. An album &#8220;in awe of life’s mysteries,&#8221; as <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2024/01/10/albums-we-missed-in-2023/">we wrote</a>, &#8220;determined to see the beautiful and the surreal rise above the grind of the everyday,&#8221; <em>Oh Glistening Onion&#8230;</em> focused on the outside world and its expansive scale, but <em>Song Room</em> inverts its gaze to instead peer inward. A survey not of the exterior but interior, though one which nevertheless finds a vast world full of strange beauty.</p>
<p>Take latest single &#8216;Imagine Your Face&#8217;, a track which attempts to counter the fog of unhappiness by curating a series of fond memories, as though to commit contentment to song is to fashion it into a kind of amulet or talisman that might provide strength when it is most needed. “This song is about the love and memories that we hold within us and that animate our lives,&#8221; Pearla explains. &#8220;I once heard depression described as ‘a failure of imagination’—and I really resonated with that. I feel most alone when I can’t properly hold or recall the vivid details of my life and the people in it. This song for me functions kind of like a collage of different memories and images that keep me company when I have that forgetful feeling.”</p>

New single &#8216;Moss Song&#8217; might explore humbler themes but is no less resonant, its warm tones and languid rhythms allowing in the outside environment, playing like spring blooming in real time. The result is patient, unhurried and most welcome on a grey February morning. As though within its easygoing flow is a reminder that the world moves slowly yet surely, and the only real path to contentment is to learn to match its speed.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Blue Communications &#8211; Australian Summer / Simple Delight</h3>
<p><a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/melbourne">Naarm</a> trio <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/blue-communications/">Blue Communications</a> have only existed for about a year, but have already begun to win  over hearts and minds with their eclectic and energetic live set. Now the band have released their first recorded music, double single <em>Australian Summer / Simple Delight</em>, via <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/Southern-exposure-records">Southern Exposure Records</a>. The two tracks are a fitting introduction to a band that combine catchy punk, sunny Antipodean jangle and lo-fi experimentalism. Aine Keogh takes the lead on ‘Australian Summer’, which as its title suggests is a hazy and sun-drunk folk-inflected song that evokes long and lazy summer days. ‘Simple Delight’ on the other hand is something of a tempo change, Billie Burrow taking over vocal duties in an urgent and barrelling punky pop song the band say is “about anti-fascist action and queer punk culture.” As captured in the joyously repeated line:</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Brightmoon &#8211; Lies About The Sky (Shudder to Think cover)</h3>
<p>The recording project of husband and wife duo Billy and Becca Mohler, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/brightmoon/">Brightmoon</a> takes its name from the imaginary kingdom in the animated show <em>She-Ra and the Princess of Power</em>. In the cartoon, the land is dreamlike and shrouded in mystery, and it was exactly such sensations which the Mohlers wished to convey with their hybrid shoegaze, indie rock and dream pop aesthetic. However, make no mistake, Brightmoon offer more edge and emotional bite than simple nostalgia. “Poetry and songwriting are the best outlets for me. It’s cheesy to say this, but they’re like therapy. I put my struggles and demons in my songs,” Becca shares. Billy adds: “Our music is a catharsis. For us, it’s a break from the challenges of daily living, and we want to provide that kind of respite for others.” With their debut EP coming soon via <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/noon-records">Noon Records</a>, the duo have shared a cover of Shudder To Think&#8217;s &#8216;Lies About The Sky&#8217;, the ideal introduction to a band that can provide shimmering textures and pummelling energy in equal measure. <h3 style="text-align: center;">Brown Horse – Twisters</h3>
<p><a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/norwich/">Norwich</a>-based purveyors of “slacker twang” <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/brown-horse/">Brown Horse</a> are nothing if not prolific. They announced themselves to the world with 2024 debut <em>Reservoir</em> (which was one of <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2025/01/10/year-in-review-2024/">that year’s stand-out records</a>), and returned with sophomore effort <em><a href="https://brownhorse.bandcamp.com/album/all-the-right-weaknesses">All the Right Weaknesses</a> </em>little over a year later. Their style fits the zeitgeist perfectly, a rough and dusty mix of country and indie rock that very much in vogue at the moment, think (roughly) equal parts Jason Molina, Neil Young and Lucinda Williams. And they’re very good at it too. All of which is to say that expectation is high for the next Brown Horse record, <em>Total Dive</em>, which is due for release barely a year since the last one. Our first glimpse is ‘Twisters’, another confident and wearily optimistic mid-tempo country rocker that would sound perfect on a sunny afternoon cruise once spring has sprung in a couple of weeks.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Helicopter Leaves &#8211; Moreoff More Off Than On</h3>
<p>“I wanted to invest in it myself—take the more adult serious step. Grow up.” So explains Anthony Vaccaro of <em>Sabrina Nickels</em>, the latest album from his solo project <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/helicopter-leaves/">Helicopter Leaves</a>. Having made a name as guitarist and co-songwriter in <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/Chicago">Chicago</a> rock band <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/Beach-Bunny">Beach Bunny</a>, Vaccaro&#8217;s solo work has thus far remained very much a side project, 2023 debut <em>Get Stuck In</em> recorded in the basement of his grandparents&#8217; house. However, anyone who spent time with that record would have said considerable vision and potential within the idiosyncratic sound, and now Vaccaro is determined to level up with the new album and give Helicopter Leaves the attention it deserves. The basement was swapped for Steve Albini’s Electrical Audio and longtime Beach Bunny collaborator Sean O’Keefe&#8217;s home studio, and a newfound commitment followed, though Vaccaro still plays all the instruments and retains the same personal spirit. Just take lead single &#8216;Moreoff More Off Than On&#8217;, a track charged with all the adventure and experimentation that makes the project special.</p>

<p>You likely know Joe Newman as part of the critically acclaimed indie rock outfit <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/alt-j">alt-j</a>, though fans will soon come to know him as something altogether different. For having signed with <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/Mushroom-Magic">Mushroom Music</a> / Virgin Music Group, Newman is adopting the moniker <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/Jjerome87">JJerome87</a> and setting out solo. Lead single &#8216;Brush Me Like A Horse&#8217; serves as the calling card for the new project. Recorded in Los Angeles with producer Carlos De La Garza, there&#8217;s a notable Californian flavour to the track, Newman reaching for elements of gospel, Motown and blues. But beneath the sunny spirit is something altogether more surreal. The almost Kafkaesque story of man who, as the title alludes, finds himself slowly turning in to a horse. Something between a cautionary tale and act of wish fulfillment which probes what can happen when the outside world begins to see us differently.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Nice Weather &#8211; Room Tone</h3>
<p>Based in <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/philadelphia">Philadelphia</a>, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/nice-weather">Nice Weather</a> in an ambient project which, as per the artist, looks to explore &#8220;the baritone guitar as an environment rather than an instrument.&#8221; Serving as both an introduction and mission statement, lead track &#8216;Room Tone&#8217; is atmospheric in an almost literal sense. A song named after the filmmaking term for the sounds within a space with no dialogue or intentional noise, that is, the audio presence of an ostensibly &#8216;silent&#8217; environment, &#8216;Room Tone&#8217; is a live to tape improvisation which owes equal debts to the work of Mary Lattimore and David Lynch. A soundscape in which apparently empty space carries its own mood and charge, and the contours of sound itself mark out the emotional landscape of a given space.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">The Rural Alberta Advantage &#8211; The Hunt In Edson</h3>
<p>We last wrote about <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/the-rural-alberta-advantage/">The Rural Alberta Advantage</a> back in 2023 when the Toronto based indie rock darlings put out their fifth full-length, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2023/09/11/weekly-listening-september-2023-2/"><em>The Rise &amp; The Fall</em></a>. The album saw lead Nils Edenloff shake off the associated anguish inherent within the act of writing songs to pen another stellar collection and put his own self-doubt to rest. Fast forward two years and The RAA are back with &#8216;The Hunt in Edson&#8217;, a brand new single on <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/saddle-creek/">Saddle Creek</a> that shows Edenloff and co. are ready to put themselves through it all over again. Inspired by a pair of unrelated true events, the song explores the bracing experience of being under the most severe of pressure, be it caught in the jaws of a predator or stood on the edge with a rope around your neck. A world that feels unwell, with climate collapse, rising fascism, televised genocide and a whole manner of other symptoms racking a planet in the vice grip of whatever stage of capitalism we’ve passed into now.&#8221; So <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2025/10/02/devon-church-all-thats-solid-melts-into-air/">we wrote last month</a> of <em>All That’s Solid Melts Into Air</em>, the forthcoming album from <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/winnipeg/">Winnipeg</a>-born, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/new-york/">New York</a>-based songwriter <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/devon-church/">Devon Church</a>. The title track paired stark Biblical imagery with earnest emotion, and latest single &#8216;Fall Like Lightning&#8217; continues the style. One which sees pessimism and hope exist simultaneously, a spirit tied to the overtly leftist position of the record as whole. The album notes aptly describe the song as &#8220;a kind of &#8216;Subterranean Homesick Blues&#8217; for dejected denizens of the internet,&#8221; railing against the myriad of contemporary curses brought forth by capitalism&#8217;s iron grip, as well as the false prophets who have risen within this milieu, promising the world while grinding us under their boots.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Dwi Riana &#8211; Dysphoria</h3>
<p>Next year <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/dwi-riana/">Dwi Riana</a> will release her debut full-length <em>Songs from the Yellow Couch</em>, and the <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/toronto">Toronto</a>-based songwriter has been releasing singles in recent weeks to offer a preview. Most recently &#8216;<a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2025/05/16/dwi-riana-springtime/">Springtime</a>&#8216;, a song which evoked, as we put it, &#8220;the thaw after a long winter where the possibility of growth and love becomes real again.&#8221; Now Riana has returned with &#8216;Dysphoria&#8217;, a track which explores the ongoing experience of gender dysphoria via a mix of bossa-nova, indie jazz and folk influences. &#8220;I initially wrote this song as a very short interlude for my album, with no hook, just the bossa guitar and one verse. After playing it more, I developed it into a full song and it turned into this indie-jazz version,&#8221; Riana explains. &#8220;We wanted to create a feeling of controlled chaos, using dissonance and blending differing sounds together to add to the theme of dysphoria.&#8221;</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Fealty &#8211; Walking on Hands</h3>
<p><a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/Thad-Kopec">Thad Kopec</a> has been putting out music for years under his own name, the <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/Nashville">Nashville</a> artist flitting between styles and genres with each passing release and slowly building up a significant back catalogue that covers everything from ornate indie rock to hushed folk and digital pop. However, such a history gets heavy after a while, and Kopec found himself itching for the freedom of a fresh start. Hence <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/Fealty">Fealty</a>, a brand new project which sees him turn over production duties for the first time as Bennett Littlejohn takes the reins, allowing for a newfound focus solely on performance. After a self-titled EP earlier in the year, Fealty is now back with new single &#8216;Walking on Hands&#8217;. A song of equal parts intimacy and invention, where Kopec&#8217;s renewed drive and curiosity are on full show for all to see.</p>

<p>Hailing from <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/Sydney">Sydney</a> and now based in <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/London">London</a>, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/Howling-Bells">Howling Bells</a> made a name for themselves in the mid-aughties with a dark, brooding and often cinematic style of indie rock, releasing a string of albums which reached out towards folk, krautrock and various other influences too. After the release of <em>Heartstrings</em> back in 2014, the band went quiet for over a decade, but have now announced their return in 2026 with new full-length, <em>Strange Life</em>. The album not only breaks the hiatus but reflects on it, as shown by latest single &#8216;Heavy Lifting&#8217;. &#8220;A hazy and grunge-fuelled declaration,&#8221; as lead Juanita Stein puts it. &#8220;Like anyone who’s worked at the thing they love tirelessly, you build up great resilience. <p>&#8220;A song, like The Weakerthans’ ‘One Great City!’ before it, which uses the dismal skies and cityscape of <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/Winnipeg">Winnipeg</a> as a kind of mirror, evoking a personal lethargy and lack of colour [&#8230;] But for all of its sombre gloom, the track refuses to settle within the leaden environment, each chorus like an upward grasp towards something brighter in the hope of piercing the clouds.&#8221; So we wrote of &#8216;Best I Did It&#8217; from <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/living-hour/">Living Hour</a>&#8216;s new album <em>Internal Drone Infinity</em> a few weeks ago, a song indicative of the band&#8217;s ability to excavate the magical from the mundane. I keep a list on my phone of things I see on the sidewalk: garbage that breaks my heart or situations that I try to explain, either to myself or over text—that blue bubble carrying my thoughts somewhere else.&#8221;</p>

<p>Consisting of Jeff Mensch (guitar, vocals), Jessica Keuskamp (drums, vocals) and Patrick Greer (bass), <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/The-Michigans">The Michigans</a> are a brand new indie rock outfit out of <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/new-jersey">New Jersey</a> channelling the spirit of their Northeastern forebears. As debut single &#8216;Spring Ahead (Fall In Line)&#8217; attests, fans of the like of Yo La Tengo, Dinosaur Jr. and our old favourites <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/oxford-collapse">Oxford Collapse</a> would be advised to take notice. The track is executed with the kind of confidence most new projects could only dream of, slowly shapeshifting from the jangling brightness of the front half into something heavier and hazier as psych influences descend like a fog. But regardless of where you find yourself in the song, you can bet on the thrilling sense of forward motion to be barrelling onwards, giving everything an infectious, affirming tone that&#8217;s only elevated by the singalong vocals.</p>

<p>Recording under the moniker <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/more-like-shadows">More Like Shadows</a>, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/toronto">Toronto</a>&#8216;s Jordan Allen combines music and visual art to form his own unique aesthetic. Raw, lo-fi indie rock and collage-based visuals meet and intertwine, each element as playful and inventive as the other. New album <em>Vacation Mode</em> was released earlier this month, and single &#8216;Hive Mind&#8217; serves as the perfect intro to the project for anyone unfamiliar. What Allen describes as &#8220;a song about the mindsets and 10-step programs of media addiction, the collective yearning for uprising, and the job market economy comment section wishlists of now,&#8221; it manages to capture the wiry spirit of classic post-punk while offering a more muscular dimension too, all tied together by vocals which phase between sardonic and sincere. &#8220;Can we eat the rich? / I just think we’ve had enough of their bullshit,&#8221; as Allen asks in one verse, a line wryly humorous for sure, but not without its hopeful sentiment.</p>

<p>We last featured <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/pearla/">Pearla</a> back in 2023, including the album <em>Oh Glistening Onion, The Nighttime Is Coming</em> among <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2024/01/10/albums-we-missed-in-2023/">our favourite releases of the year</a>. A record where &#8220;playful whimsy and unfiltered introspection are kept in check by a certain self-awareness,&#8221; as we wrote, &#8220;though cannot help but tend towards the potential of some higher mystery,&#8221; and thus marking the project as one which &#8220;works in awe of life&#8217;s mysteries, determined to see the beautiful and the surreal rise above the grind of the everyday.&#8221; The first new release since <em>Oh Glistening Onion</em>, new single &#8216;To Love Something&#8217; builds upon this style with care and grace, again searching for those small details which lift an otherwise mundane existence into something significant. <p>Earlier in the year we let you know <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/sheffield">Sheffield</a>&#8216;s <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/since-torino">since torino</a> were preparing to release their debut EP, describing ‘transatlantic flight song’ as the perfect entry point to the project. &#8220;Opening with a restrained hush, the song sets out a quiet, reflective mood, combining organ and murmured vocals to create an easy meandering fondness, and gradually develops to push the mood further,&#8221; we wrote. &#8220;First with glitched guitars and eventually sweeps of violin, all working together to create a song which aches with the fondness of nostalgic contemplation.&#8221; The EP, which it turns out is titled <em>reunion dinner</em>, is now available, and the title track embodies its ornate literary folk rock style. Another slow burner, the song draws the audience in with the muted quiet of the opening before blooming with the introduction of horns and strings. But it resists the temptation to puncture the overriding restraint to create a wistful, decidedly autumnal air.</p>

<p>&#8220;Embraces the twin joys of melody and noise, utilising both pop and garage rock aesthetics to write songs for the meek and modest among us.&#8221; So we wrote back in September of the Long Beach, California-based band <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/repeating-cloudsweet-nobody">Sweet Nobody</a>, single &#8216;<a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2025/09/09/weekly-listening-september-2025-2/">Revenge</a>&#8216; giving a glimpse at new full-length <em>Driving Off to Nowhere</em>. With the album&#8217;s release only weeks away via <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/repeating-cloud">Repeating Cloud</a>, Sweet Nobody are back with new track &#8216;Forget Me&#8217;. The song is heavier and darker than its predecessor, switching out the sunny indie pop energy for something more clouded and stormy. But for all of its shadowy tones and brooding weight, the prevailing mood is one of catharsis. As though across the track a sense of conviction develops, a decision to voice those things unsaid and let go of the past.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Tara Kannangara &#8211; Here We Are Again (From Alice Is Fine)</h3>
<p>Back in 2024, we wrote about <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2024/04/08/weekly-listening-april-2024-2/"><em>Extraordinary People</em></a>, the EP by <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/sri-lanka">Sri Lankan</a>&#8211;<a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/canada">Canadian</a> songwriter and musician <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/tara-kannangara/">Tara Kannangara</a>, describing how the JUNO-nominated artist draws on classical training and jazz sensibilities to push synth pop in new directions. Written for the short film <a href="https://aliceisfinefilm.com/"><em>Alice Is Fine</em></a>, new single &#8216;Here We Are Again&#8217; is no less evocative or inventive. A track Kannangara describes as &#8220;an indie pop song about the repressed rage of not being believed,&#8221; able to offer both intimate hush and big, bold defiance. The film follows a female protagonist who decides to stand up for herself against a doctor who dismisses her pain, and &#8216;Here We Are Again&#8217; gives the scenario all the fury and catharsis it warrants.</p>

<p><em>Dark Dark Blue</em>, the title of Ava Mirzadegan&#8217;s latest full-length, might refer to a mood, a time of day, the quality of light in a room. The album was written in Mirzadegan&#8217;s childhood bedroom in the wake of a break-up, a collection of finger-picked folk songs which paints a series of memories, longings and confessions in the palette of the titular hue. But though the present loss hangs heavy, Mirzadegan also digs towards a deeper seam of sadness. One ingrained at her centre, accumulated not only across one life but an entire family history. Here, old wounds are not so much sources of pain as shafts leading towards something older and more fundamental, and Ava Mirzadegan follows these passageways as deep as they might allow her in the hope that allowing light into these dark spaces is to begin to process and heal.</p>

<p>The <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/seattle/">Seattle</a>-based singer-songwriter Dean Johnson (who is also a member of the band Sons of Rainier) has built a devoted following across the Pacific Northwest with his live shows, garnering almost mythical status with his anachronistic folk songs full of lonesome melodies and gruff heartbreak. Not wishing to change a winning formula, Johnson&#8217;s debut solo record <em>Nothing For Me Please </em>is almost completely devoid of bells and whistles, to the point where it often feels like he is singing from a chair in the corner or crooning from a sticky dive bar stage. He sings of pining for a lost love (‘Old TV’, ‘Shouldn’t Say Mine’) and false-smiling through a breakup (‘Acting School’), and the age-old existential woes of any cowboy worth his salt. Songs relatively simplistic in their construction and all the better for it, a reminder that less is oftentimes more. The album is relatively brief, clocking in at less than thirty minutes, though lingers in the mind like the sweet tones of a half-remembered dream.</p>

<p>&#8220;To make music that honours their ancestors and Indigenous land, to oppose white supremacy, and to work towards a future of Black and Indigenous liberation.&#8221; That&#8217;s how the liner notes of <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/divide-and-dissolve/">Divide and Dissolve</a>&#8216;s <em>Systemic </em>describes the intention at the heart of the duo&#8217;s crushing songs. The album felt like a fitting soundtrack to 2023, yet another year where the pervasive systems of violence and control have been all too visible, and those familiar with previous LP <em>Gas Lit</em> will recognise the dark, furious density Takiaya Reed and Sylvie Nehill manage to conjure. But far from being a mere sonic steamroller happy to only grind its audience into the ground, <em>Systemic</em> pairs its apocalyptic weight with something more fragile and light. Sections almost orchestral in their detail which move through the ruins of the doomworld in something like defiance. The dominant systems might seem as monolithic as they are malevolent, but there are other systems, other possibilities, and they are more persistent than you might think. As Minori Sanchiz-Fung reads on &#8216;Kingdom of Fear&#8217;:</p>

<p>When people talk about the &#8216;real world&#8217;, they’re not really talking about the real world. Words are not up to such an endeavour. But that’s where art comes in. Described as “music for Blue Sky (‘where the eagle that flies out of sight flies’),” this self-released cassette from Erik Kramer feels like a reminder of this fact, an exercise evoking in times, places and feelings that are incommunicable with mere words. Crafted from a hodgepodge of instruments and samples—from guitar, banjo and pump organ to bells and Casio keyboards, a tin whistle, field recordings, loon calls, snippets of poetry and the ambient sounds of “cars &amp; trucks” and “Madison area teenagers”—the tape offers a series vignettes, small, snatched moments of beauty and nostalgia and wistfulness. Take the mantra-like repetition of ‘Hermit Guardian Angel’ or Eva Chudnow’s still and sweet rendition of the titular traditional folk song on ‘Just as the tide was flowing’, the gloomy slo-mo rock song of ‘Daylight Saving’ or the title track which swells and shivers with an inextricable mixture of sorrow and joy. In a world that seems to grow more complex and cruel with each rotation, it’s no small wonder to find escape routes, art that enables not selfish head-in-the-sand ignorance but a return to what really matters, what really <em>is</em>.</p>

<p><em>The Holey Bible</em> feels like a seminal moment in <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/florry/">Florry</a>’s history. The Philly band, led by Francie Medosch, have dabbled with country sensibilities ever since their inception, but this record is the moment they fully embrace the genre. It&#8217;s chock full of fiddle and mandolin, harmonica and pedal steel, meandering melodies and a heart-on-sleeve lyrical style that seems determined to look on the bright side. This positivity permeates the record, sidestepping the lonesome blues so common in the genre in favour of something genuinely joyful, though with a messy, ramshackle spirit that wards off any threat of things getting saccharine. Through woozy waltzes, fuzzy Country-fried rockers and no small amount of narrative attention, Florry rise from an uncertain, bleak world like a Roman candle, as though the only way to live nowadays is to meet despair with an equal and opposite force.</p>

<p>Writing in one of his journals, the Trappist monk Thomas Merton described the necessity of living in solitude in the woods. “The silence of the forest is my bride and the sweet dark warmth of the whole world is my love,” he wrote. “Out of the heart of that dark warmth comes the secret that is heard only in silence, but it is the root of all the secrets that are whispered by all the lovers in their beds all over the world.” It is this secret, not the lovers, with which <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/gia-margaret/">Gia Margaret</a>’s <em>Romantic Piano</em> is concerned. A collection of spare compositions whose title gestures not to rose petals and candlelit dinners but the melancholic wonder of the late eighteenth century. Because while Margaret’s first instrumental release <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2020/06/24/gia-margaret-mia-gargaret/"><em>Mia Gargaret</em></a> was wrapped in insular detachment, these brief, meditative songs open the curtains if not entirely stepping outside. A picture of solitude not as some lonely retreat but rather the path towards recognising the wider connection of things. That sweet dark warmth of the whole world.</p>

<p>&#8220;The title of my album, the question, is driven by grief,&#8221; explains Kara Jackson of debut album <em>Why Does The Earth Give Us People To Love?</em> &#8220;Why do we show up on this world alongside one another? To love and to mourn? To curse each other out? To die working every day?&#8221; Jackson works through this question in what feels like real time, swapping any hope of a definitive answer for the gradual process of learning. Songs at once intimate and grand, and as fond of playful humour as they are heart-on-the-sleeve sincerity. But the biggest irony of the album is that of its intention. Because for all of its immediacy and uncertainty, Jackson&#8217;s refusal to offer any simple, unifying answer comes to represent a solution in its own right. Why does the earth give us people to love? The answer might not reveal itself directly, but would songs like this exist if it did?</p>

<p>The music of Taja Cheek&#8217;s L&#8217;Rain has never been content in a single box. Straddling pop, jazz, R&amp;B and experimental styles, the songwriter and multi-instrumentalist has made name in refusing easy categorisation. This elusive fluidity extends through every aspect of latest album, <em>I Killed Your Dog</em>. A love record, a break-up record, an anti-break-up record. A record which reaches for commercial pop without ceding an inch of its avant garde ambition. &#8220;I’m envisioning a world of contradictions, as always,&#8221; Cheek describes. &#8220;Sensual, maybe even sexy, but terrifying, and strange.&#8221; Hence we get an intricate, tangled picture of what it means to love and hurt the people we care about, where shame need not preclude cruelty and love comes complete with both hope and despair. The style is encapsulated by the question Cheek poses in the liner notes: “Is the title an act of maliciousness and revenge or an expression of remorse and regret?” The answer, as always with L&#8217;Rain, isn&#8217;t as simple as one or the other. It&#8217;s everything, simultaneously.</p>

<p><a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/lael-neale/">Lael Neale</a>’s music feels unmoored from time. Written and recorded at her family home in rural <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/virginia/">Virginia</a> with help from collaborator Guy Blakeslee and without the involvement of a single screen, <em>Star Eaters Delight</em> draws on multiple lineages of American alternative music, from the lo-fi pop of Suicide and The Velvet Underground to folk singers like Joan Baez and Joni Mitchell. All in an attempt to reach out into the quiet of remote landscapes and fill them with sound and life. In contrast to Neale’s previous album <em>Acquainted With Night</em>, which turned inward to find peace away from the bustle of urban LA, the record explores the false divide between humans and the rest of nature (“I pledge allegiance to tree and meadow / I have no need to conquer or keep them” as Neale sings on opener ‘I Am the River’) and the value of tranquillity away from the information overload of modern life. There are many planes and dimensions, the songs at times crystalline and brittle, others amorphous and unbreakable as water, though it is this tranquillity that ultimately stands out. Minimalism not as a pretentious aesthetic choice or act of puritan self-denial, but, in true transcendentalist style, as an expression of freedom. As Neale puts it when explaining her outlook, she identifies as a minimalist “not because I don’t like things, but because I value freedom more.”</p>

<p><a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/wild-pink/">Wild Pink</a> has been a VSF favourite for a number of years now, and we count <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/laura-wolf/">Laura Wolf</a>&#8216;s <em>Shelf Life</em> among our favourite releases of 2023, so it is no surprise Lilts won our hearts too. Not that the collaboration between Wolf and Wild Pink&#8217;s John Ross is overtly indebted to the previous work of its duo. Rather, the pair allow their respective talents to compliment one another, setting their compass to Nineties shoegaze but allowing for whatever detours might occur along the way. Elements of dream pop and post-rock filter in, and there&#8217;s none of the derivative flatness of the revivalist movement. Indeed, there&#8217;s a freedom to &#8216;Dodge Street&#8217; and the title track which feels wholly new. A product of the relationship between its creators, as though learning to trust another person allows an artist to escape the confines and expectations of the work they&#8217;ve done in the past.</p>

<p>Mark Jenkin&#8217;s 2019 film <em>Bait </em>took kitchen sink realism and bent it into something stranger, its use of a hand-cranked camera and style of dubbing distorting an otherwise familiar picture of tensions between rural traditions and the encroaching middle class. Again set in rural Cornwall, follow-up <em>Enys Men</em> leant more fully into this unsettling mood. Centring on a volunteer ecologist tasked with observing a rare flower on a remote island, the film presents time as both a line and a circle. The protagonist&#8217;s monotonous routine unfolds with striking similarity each day, even if the dates in her logbook progress, while strange visions appear across the island as though the thin present is merely draped over a many layered past. To say <em>Enys Men</em> sounded better than it looked is to pay it the highest compliment, with a soundtrack by Jenkin himself which embodies every inch of the film&#8217;s loneliness, stark beauty and hauntological mystery.</p>

<p>The self-titled record from <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/edinburgh/">Edinburgh</a>&#8216;s <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/meursault/">Meursault</a> was initially designed as a concept album. The tale of two characters, including the titular Meursault, attempting to negotiate a post-apocalyptic world. A direct evolution, then, from the &#8220;urban horror vignettes&#8221; of 2019&#8217;s <em>Crow Hill</em>, as Neil Pennycook looked to lead the project in a more narrative-driven direction. But any short story worth its salt undergoes intense revision, and <em>Meursault</em> was pared down beyond its original idea. As though in delving further into the album&#8217;s themes, Pennycook felt able to remove the scaffold of the narrative and allow the songs to stand on their own. The character of Meursault remains, albeit under a different guise, and in offering a more autobiographical picture than anything Pennycook has shared to date, the songs come to form a wider meditation on what the ever-changing project means to him. &#8220;I am tired of this metaphor and I am bored of this poetry,&#8221; as he sings on the title track:</p>

<p><em>Mermaids</em>, the latest release from composer and sound artist Natalia Beylis, is in no small part indebted to a trip to a Leitrim recycling centre. It was there Beylis came across an unwanted CRB Elettronica Ancona Diamond 708 E Electric Keyboard, an instrument seemingly patient in its wait for a saviour. Beylis took it home, performed some surgery to remove the purple crayons rattling around inside, and took to playing. &#8220;When I found the cover picture of the three figures in a stack of old family photos,&#8221; Beylis says, &#8220;a confluence of the sounds and the image charged through me and [the album] began to flicker into being.&#8221; But as the record progresses, what might as first seem like serendipity deepens into something more profound. As though in committing to strange patterns of intuition and happenstance, Beylis is able to push deeper into nostalgia and unearth the lines of history and heritage within.</p>

<p>The title character of Robert Coover’s 1968 novel <em>The Universal Baseball Association, Inc., J. Henry Waugh, Prop.</em> might be miserable in his work life, but at night he escapes reality into a fantasy of his own creation. A fully functioning baseball league he runs as a tabletop game, where every pitch, hit and injury are governed by the roll of a dice. The sport&#8217;s essence is captured in the pursuit, a collision of hard statistics and ever-unfolding narrative at a pace slow enough to fill an entire life. Northwoods Sleep Baseball Radio lives in the spirit of Coover’s imagination, albeit with a zany Pynchonian twist. A podcast fronted by elusive <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/chicago/">Chicago</a> humourist ‘Mr King’ which offers full-length and entirely fictional baseball games featuring players like Clifton Santiago, Lefty Thorn, Blink Retterson and Randy Chang, all narrated by commentator Wally McCarthy. This album, released by Worried Songs, serves as the perfect first step into the comforting and hilarious world of Northwoods Sleep Baseball. Where sedate rhythms draw you in, but wry imagination keeps you listening.</p>

<p>The majestic Lankum might have deservedly taken 2023 by storm, but Radie Peat&#8217;s other project ØXN also released a masterful album this year. More adventurous still than <a href="https://lankum.bandcamp.com/album/false-lankum"><em>False Lankum</em></a>, <em>CYRM</em> offers mix of traditional and original folk songs loaded with aching hearts and portentous weight, charging folk with electronic and cinematic sensibilities to blur the line between blessing and curse. Take &#8216;Love Henry&#8217;, a tale of seduction and violence which screws taut as it progresses, every bit as black and fated as the darkest fairy tale, or &#8216;Cruel Mother&#8217;, where a woman pressured into infanticide sees herself become a slow slide towards damnation. A dread-laden version of Scott Walker’s &#8216;Farmer in the City&#8217; closes out the album, a thirteen-minute epic which creeps and creeps until it as all around you, then collapses into a chaos of noise.</p>

<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m not certain about much,&#8221; sings Pearla on &#8216;Ming the Clam&#8217;, &#8220;But I&#8217;m certain how we touch / Is compelled by some great force / Other than us.&#8221; The song encapsulates the spirit of <em>Oh Glistening Onion, The Nighttime Is Coming</em>, where playful whimsy and unfiltered introspection are kept in check by a certain self-awareness, though cannot help but tend towards the potential of some higher mystery. Many of the songs are concerned with finding comfort within a hostile world, and often play like questions being processed in real time, drawing on both real life experiences and wider sources. From the experience of having a credit card stolen at a flower shop to the story of Ming, the oldest individual animal known to science which died as scientists studied its longevity (&#8220;I study all the little signs / Under fluorеscent light&#8230; Reminder of the grand creation / How did she keep on fighting?&#8221;). It&#8217;s an album that marks Pearla as a project that works in awe of life&#8217;s mysteries, determined to see the beautiful and the surreal rise above the grind of the everyday.</p>

<p>&#8220;In case I don&#8217;t see you, well, for a little while, I just want to tell you, it&#8217;s been lovely. Every bit of it. The whole fifty years. I&#8217;d sooner have been your wife, Bark, than anyone else on earth.&#8221; So says Lucy &#8220;Ma&#8221; Cooper in the closing scene of Leo McCarey&#8217;s 1937 drama <em>Make Way For Tomorrow</em>, a film which feels relevant to Protomartyr&#8217;s fifth album, <em>Formal Growth in the Desert</em>, not least because it is referenced by the titles of opening pair of tracks. The songs were written in a period which saw lead Joe Casey lose his mother and be forced out of his childhood home, and while the records holds no small amount of grief and darkness, it also serves as an unguarded declaration of love. Which might sound strange for a band who have won deserved acclaim for their foreboding sound, their fury and doom, but Protomartyr have always been so much more than another snarling, depressed post-punk outfit in a crowded field. &#8220;Time&#8217;s your enemy / Every gift you see will be taken for sure,&#8221; Casey sings on &#8216;The Author&#8217;, the most direct tribute to his mother. &#8220;So I figure while you live / Kiss the ones that love you / For thе song you sing.&#8221; In case I don&#8217;t see you for a little while, I just want to tell you, it&#8217;s been lovely.</p>

<p>The title of <em>Radial Gate</em>, Justin Morris&#8217;s second album under the moniker Sluice, follows the project name and doubles down on the imagery of water. Namely its control, the mechanisms and machinery developed in order to stop, raise and coax waterways in the manners most functional. Morris&#8217;s songs, cut from a nostalgic, patient style of folk and elevated by a rich palette of instrumentation, feel like miniature versions of such systems. Only here the flow is not a canal or estuary but the ever pulling course of time, complete with its attached stream of memories and meaning. Tracks like &#8216;Centurion&#8217; find affirming momentum in this current, while others dam the passage to contemplate the depths of a single moment. But whether Morris is skimming along the surface or submerging himself in plunge pools, the lasting sense is that of control. For if life is a flowing river, <em>Radial Gate</em> represents an attempt to apply structures along its course so that we might more fully engage with the power and potential to be found therein.</p>

<p>As its title suggests, this compilation by the fine folks at SPINSTER invited artists to explore links between food and music. From shared conceptual themes of creativity and community to parallels between melody and harmony and texture and flavour, each song celebrates both the act of preparing food and sharing it with others. The result is what the label call “an auditory cookbook of songs, poems, field recordings, and aural experiments, inspired by recipes, food preparation processes, dishes, and the experience of eating.” There ain’t a dud across the sixteen tracks, but personal favourites include <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/Andy-McLeod">Andy McLeod</a> &amp; <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/sarah-bachman">Sarah Bachman</a>’s timeless folk opener, a new song from <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/lou-turner/">Lou Turner</a> inspired by a line from Robert Frost, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/sally-anne-morgan/">Sally Anne Morgan</a>’s soil-to-plate ‘Grain Song’ that’s all blue skies and wide open fields, and <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/little-mazarn/">Little Mazarn</a>’s exploration of food’s ability to evoke memories, in this case of an uncle who she says “briefly played on the Dallas Cowboys but mostly played football with me on Thanksgiving.”</p>

<p>Since releasing his last record <em>Utopia Teased</em> in 2018, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/oakland/">Oakland</a>’s Stephen Steinbrink busied himself with other things, both musical and not. He dove into the craft of engineering records for other bands, enjoying the sense of communal creativity in contrast to the solo endeavour of writing and recording for himself. He also studied an apprenticeship at a stained glass studio and became deeply interested in Buddhism, enrolling in lay monastic training before being interrupted by the global lockdowns of 2020. All of which is important when considering <em>Disappearing Coin</em>, an album which represents something of a reinvention for Steinbrink. A wilful attempt to make music with the same creativity and sense of awe-filled wonder that he felt when exploring these other avenues. The spirit is captured in the conjurer&#8217;s trick of the title, where reality is ruptured by a brief spark of magic. Buoyed by the experience and wisdom gleaned from outside activities, Steinbrink returns to music as a kind of magician himself. A figure who, guided by invention and playfulness, looks to use mastery of a physical craft in order to open the door to small, intangible miracles.</p>

<p>Released a decade since the project’s inception in 2013, <em>Strawberry Runners</em> is the self-titled debut full-length from Emi Night’s songwriting project. Written following a period of great personal upheaval and echoing back to past trauma, the record returns to dark places with disarming candour and an easy grace, folding folk and pop into shapes that feel at once fresh and familiar. Night runs their fingers over old wounds to confront feelings of loneliness and heartbreak, but does so with a renewed spirit and sense of unrestrained creativity. Because despite the sometimes heavy subject matter, <em>Strawberry Runners</em> is a warm and colourful record. One full of gentle melodies and tactile textures, small details that evoke the multisensory nature of our chaotic world in all of its pain and joy and mysterious beauty. Take the sunny, devotional love song ‘Alison’, a shot of sunshiney summer where you can almost hear the wistful smile bend Night&#8217;s voice as they sing.</p>

<p>There’s always been a distance in the music of <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/sun-june/">Sun June</a>, from the disconnect between lovers and family members to the wide open vistas of the <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/austin/">Austin</a> band’s home state. But third album <em>Bad Dream Jaguar</em> was inspired by distance of another order of magnitude. Founding members Laura Colwell and guitarist Stephen Salisbury have been in a relationship for the last few years, and the record was written after Salisbury moved 1,300 miles away to North Carolina, the couple swapping demos of new songs as a way to both process and alleviate the sense of separation and longing. The hazy dream-like quality of the Sun June sound is therefore as nostalgic and nebulous as it has ever been, painting impressionistic pictures of love and longing in quiet dusk-hued pastels, as though in effort to preserve that which might otherwise fade out into nothing. The present comes to feel like a temporary space between the gravity of the past and the vast shadowed sweep of whatever comes next, though we are given little choice but live in it as best we can.</p>

<p>“Is this working? Are you working hard? Is it working for you?” Such questions might only be asked outright in the closing track of <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/truth-club/">Truth Club</a>’s <em>Running From The Chase</em>, but their desperate weight hangs over its every moment, threatening to pull an entire life off-kilter or else bury it altogether. The <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/north-carolina/">North Carolina</a> outfit’s 2019 debut <em>Not An Exit</em> nodded to Dante by way of Bret Easton Ellis, though its despair was matched with an infectious forward motion which meant the listener could step off at the end with their pessimism shaken loose. But here the songs are more expansive, the textures dense and submerging. A sonic representation of twenty-first century living, with lead Travis Harrington left to murmur and yell within the noise, mimicking a world which demands energy for even the most basic of things. “I am scared we will end up like his friend,” as Harrington sings on the title track. “work until he’s dead / work until we’re dead / is there any other plan?”</p>

<p>Travelling from Los Angeles to New Mexico in 2021, White Boy Scream&#8217;s Micaela Tobin stopped off for a few nights in Arizona to stay with violinist and composer Joshua Hill, who was staying with his parents to shelter from the pandemic and care for his dementia-stricken father. They pitched a tent in the backyard and decided to record something in the spur of the moment, setting up microphones as wildfires raged only miles away. A confined space within a world unravelling. <em>Tent Music</em> is what emerged from those nights. Music stripped of intention and thus open to ancient or esoteric influence, Tobin and Hill acting not so much musicians but mouths for unseen voices, tools for invisible hands. When shaping the recordings over the next few years, the task felt more like relaying an old mythology than creating something new. &#8220;Both of us have a pretty long practice with improvised and experimental music,&#8221; as Tobin explains, &#8220;but there were voices coming out of me in those two nights that I’ve never used before. It felt like channelling something. When we started listening back to it, the story emerged.&#8221;</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Bad Flamingo &#8211; Fire</h3>
<p>&#8220;Give a man a mask,&#8221; said Oscar Wilde, &#8220;and he will tell you the truth.&#8221; The mysterious band Bad Flamingo have taken the idea to heart, favouring a cryptic anonymity that goes right through to actual masks. Without biographical details clouding the mix, we&#8217;re left to focus on the music, with new single &#8216;Fire&#8217; showing off an ethereal Western atmosphere that creeps and crawls into a sparse yet infectious rhythm. The result is something pitched halfway between cowboy swagger and soulful pop, sounding inviting yet also dangerous too, as though a sharp edge lurks beneath the croon.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Garden Centre &#8211; Wide Sea</h3>
<p>In preparation for the release of their third album, <em>A Moon for Digging</em>, on <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/specialist-subject-records/">Specialist Subject Records</a> and Kanine Records, Brighton&#8217;s Garden Centre has unveiled a brand new single. &#8216;Wide Sea&#8217; shows off a new full-band Garden Centre line-up, with principle songwriter Max Levy joined by members of <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/porridge-radio/">Porridge Radio</a> for a newly collaborative sound. Not that Levy&#8217;s distinctive style is in any way ironed out, the track full of the strange curiosity and energy that has long represented the Garden Centre sound.</p>
<p>&#8220;&#8216;Wide Sea&#8217; is a song about being incredibly worried about somebody, and to devoting yourself to worry,&#8221; the band explain, though insist the track is actually positive. &#8220;Coming through a period of constant fear for a person you love can peel the glue from your eyes. The horizon can overwhelm you with an accepting vastness, and you can find a little bit of comfort again in being unable to know or control the world around you.&#8221;</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Nina Keith &#8211; In The Woods We Both Saw It, Weren&#8217;t Dreaming</h3>
<p>Nina Keith is a Philadelphia-based composer, who is about to release her debut full-length  <em>MARANASATI 19111</em>. Built from &#8220;textured piano arrangements laced with vocals, flute, electronics and found sounds,&#8221; the album builds on foundations of contemporary classical music to create something something uniquely haunted and human. For a record that promises to delve into a &#8220;personal history marked by community tragedy and paranormal incidents,&#8221; lead single &#8216; In The Woods We Both Saw It, Weren&#8217;t Dreaming&#8217; is the perfect introduction, if just for that title alone. The piano-led track is quietly moving and oddly reassuring, a lament and a balm rolled into one. It&#8217;s a confident and distinctive taste of an album that could be very special indeed.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Antonioni &#8211; Stutter-Step</h3>
<p>Returning with a new EP, <em>The Odds Were All Beating Me</em>, Seattle&#8217;s Antonioni have evolved from the languorous jangle rock of previous release <em>Lullablaze</em> into something altogether heavier and darker. While their past music flirted with grunge, the new is a full-bodied embrace, the powerful vocals of Sarah Pasillas driving a newfound energy and emotional immediacy.</p>
<p>Single &#8216;Stutter-Step&#8217; is the perfect example, weaving lines of insistent energy into a hefty whole, meaning that the sound has both an urgency and a deeper, slow-burning dimension too. The track comes complete with a video by artist  Kyle Todaro, with the improv choreography of Matte Demon.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Side Saddle &#8211; Ink &amp; Dirty Strings</h3>
<p>The recording project of New York&#8217;s Ian McGuinness, Side Saddle make a reflective brand of power pop that balances joy and angst to the perfect degree. Ahead of the forthcoming EP, <em>Waltermelon</em>, the band have unveiled lead single &#8216;Ink &amp; Dirty Strings&#8217;, a track that shows off Side Saddle&#8217;s ability to combine moods to craft their own style. Charting the choppy waters of a long distance relationship, the track is at once melancholic and energetic, as though only through missing someone can you truly appreciate what they mean to you.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Special Friend &#8211; Before</h3>
<p>Special Friend is a Paris-based duo raised from a cocktail of 90s genres, drawing on grunge, shoegaze and pop to create something lusciously textured and hazy, Erica (drums) and Guillaume (guitar) sharing the vocals. The press release describes a &#8220;naive, honest and spontaneous DIY nature&#8221; that saw the band play their first show after four months and record an EP a year later, and something of this attitude shapes the sound of debut single &#8216;Before&#8217;, providing a sense of wonder that permeates the track.</p>
<p>Filmed by Marion Sautron and edited by Erica, the single&#8217;s video is &#8220;an existential crisis on a background of light, even joyful music,&#8221; taking inspiration from David Hockney&#8217;s pink clouds.  Check it out below:</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Cartalk &#8211; Noonday Devil</h3>
<p>Cartalk is the solo project of LA-based songwriter Chuck Moore who took the moniker from a text to a dear friend—&#8221;Love our car talks.<em>&#8221; </em>If such conversations are intimate and thematically fluid then Cartalk is determined to create a similar feel in the music, blending grunge and Americana into something heartfelt and full of momentum.</p>
<p>New single &#8216;Noonday Devil&#8217; is a case in point, the guitars swelling and drums galloping as Moore rides the crest. Lyrically, the song is reflective but self-consciously so, recognising how patterns and conventions can shape the passage of time. Cartalk is here to dismantle such order, freeing one to live in the way that best suits them.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Justin Peter Kinkel-Schuster &#8211; Educated Guesses</h3>
<p>You probably know Justin Peter Kinkel-Schuster&#8217;s voice if not his name. As the lead of Water Liars he proved himself a master of walking the line between folk and indie rock, combining great writing, expressive delivery and powerful instrumentation. The Arkansasan now has a burgeoning solo career, and is set to release his sophomore record <em>Take Heart, Take Care</em> later this month of Big Legal Mess Records.</p>
<p>Cut from &#8220;humid Southern nights and kudzu-encased vistas,&#8221; the album shows all of Kinkel-Schuster&#8217;s songwriting talents, representing American vignettes that are both detailed character studies and something much wider, serving as glimpses into the universal processes of hurting and healing. Single &#8216;Educated Guesses&#8217; teases a newfound glimmer to Kinkel-Schuster&#8217;s tone too, the overwhelming dark of Water Liars not lost but somehow lifted, if not quite in the rear-view then at least not nailed over one&#8217;s eyes. <h3 style="text-align: center;">Mount Sharp &#8211; Apostate</h3>
<p>Formed somewhere between a Brooklyn rooftop and a boat in Maine, Mount Sharp combines the poetic songwriting of Swood (Sarah Wood) with Bryan Bruchman’s frenetically noisy sensibilities. With Ryan Zumsen and Maia Macdonald adding a rhythm section, 2014&#8217;s <em>WEIRD FEARS</em> EP was a lesson in uninhibited energy—be that born of excitement or anxiety.</p>
<p>Back with their first new music since that release, Mount Sharp have added Sal Garro and Jonathan Pilkington Kahnt on drums and bass and developed their sound into something more contemplative without loosing any of the spirit that marked them previously. Therefore, &#8216;Apopstate&#8217; is an evolution, indebted to the past but shaped by present conditions, concerned with the personal and the political when exploring what it means to be pushed away from someone or something.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Pearla &#8211; Daydream</h3>
<p>Pearla is the moniker of Brooklyn&#8217;s Nicole Rodriguez, a songwriter who knits threads of folk, pop and psychedelica into an evocative, mystical whole. New single &#8216;Daydream&#8217; finds the sound perfected, the delicate minimalism belying the intricacy at work behind the vocals. &#8220;This song is about clinging onto a memory until it becomes distorted in your mind,&#8221; Rodriguez explains, &#8220;and turns into an almost absurd attempt to escape the present.&#8221;</p>
<p>Written after time spent rehabilitating primates in South Africa, and during an obsessive period reading Brontë novels, &#8216;Daydream&#8217; offers memory and fiction as two forms of fantasy into which we can escape, spaces outside of the harsh realities of life that should be protected and celebrated.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Cataldo &#8211; Ding Dong Scrambled Eggs</h3>
<p>“Anybody who has survived his childhood,&#8221; Flannery O&#8217;Connor once wrote, &#8220;has enough information about life to last him the rest of his days.&#8221; <em>Literally Main Street</em>, the forthcoming record from Eric Anderson&#8217;s Cataldo, is crafted from a similar sentiment. Utilizing his trademark knack for writing songs that manage to be at once playful and emotional, the album sees Anderson take stock of life from the hinterland of middle age, an eye of a storm where longing for the future and nostalgia for the past cancel one another out.</p>
<p>&#8220;I tried to write songs about what it was <em>really </em>like growing up in a weird small town,&#8221; Andersen explains, &#8220;not a tarted up banjo-and-suspenders version of what people imagine it might be like,&#8221; and such a philosophy is clear on single &#8216;Ding Dong Scrambled Eggs&#8217;. This is hindsight without rose-tinted spectacles, memories shaken from the sepia-toned warmth and resurrected in all of their awkward, nervous energy. Check out the video by Dan Fromhart below:</p>
