After twenty years fronting indie rock icons Okkervil River, Will Sheff has decided to set out alone. Debut solo record Nothing Special, out this autumn via ATO Records, confronts both his past and visions of the future, skewering the romantic delusions of grandeur which come attached to rock music. “When I was just a kid, I got caught up in the dream of being a rock and roll star,” Sheff explains. “Like so many other young people, I fell in love with the idea of being called to this glorious path outside of ordinary life.”

The ambition was shared by many people within Okkervil River, particularly drummer Travis Nelsen, who Sheff describes as a brother figure. “We would trade tales of hilarious antics and outrageous excess and tragic death like they were almost scripture,” he continues. Disciples on the road to martyrdom, worshipping at the altar of legends who went before them and practising self-destruction in search of the paradoxical legacy inherent within short bright bursts of life.

But of course reality is not so simple, and excesses and tragedy too often come with no redeeming features. Something thrown into sharp relief as Sheff’s relationship with Nelsen deteriorated then ended abruptly. “Travis and I fell out painfully, and he died in the early weeks of lockdown,” he explains. “I think a big part of Nothing Special centres around grieving for him, grieving for everything my friends have lost, grieving for the rock and rock and roll myth, and trying to open my eyes to a more transcendent reality.”

Lead single ‘Estrangement Zone’ takes this transcendental ambition into overtly speculative territory. A quasi-sci-fi sound owing as much to retro psychedelica as any futuristic vision. Or perhaps it is both simultaneously. Retrofuturism. An old-fashioned vision of what is to come. The accompanying video, directed by Sheff himself, nods to Tarkovsky and Jodorowsky in its vivid dystopia, the calamity of man unfolding within something larger and stranger.

Nothing Special comes out via ATO in October. Order it now from the Will Sheff Bandcamp page.

Millennium Mix is a new series in which we remember our favourite songs released since Jesus turned two thousand and the Millennium Bug failed to show and left us with a mixture of relief and strange disappointment. The rules are 1) the song must have been released within the specific year (though we’re not going to worry too much if a Japanese vinyl release was actually 1999 or whatever) and 2) only one song is allowed from any one album (so it’s likely we’ll miss out some of our very favourite tracks, but that’s okay). Seeing as we began 2000 as nine-year-olds, it’s likely the mixes will grow longer as we progress through the 00s and pass into an era where we got a little obsessed with music.

Ah, 2002. Who could forget the International Year of Ecotourism, Mountains, and the Outback (in Australia)? If that wasn’t enough, the queen celebrated her golden jubilee, the king came back with a bang to win the World Cup, and Hollywood decided it would release (almost) nothing but sequels. Of course, there was also a lot of great music, and here’s a selection of our favourites.

Tracklisting:

1) Broken Social Scene – Anthems For A Seventeen Year Old Girl
2) Say Hi To Your Mom – Kill the Cat
3) The Decemberists – July, July!
4) Spoon – The Way We Get By
5) The Flaming Lips – Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots Part 1
6) The Mountain Goats – The Best Ever Death Metal Band Out of Denton
7) The Libertines – Time For Heroes
8) Mclusky – To Hell With Good Intentions
9) Pavement – Baptiss Blacktick

Okkervil River are one of the best and most consistent bands of the past fifteen years or so, with a back-catalogue that would be the envy of the majority of musicians. Much of their success is down to the songwriting of front man Will Sheff, his work as detailed and nuanced and interesting as any lyricist working right now, his love of language propelling the songs past the usual remit of indie rock and into literary territory, the depth and complexity always masked by a deeply satisfying poetic flow.

After a three year break, Okkervil River are back with a new album, Away. Recorded in New York state with a new backing band and orchestration composed by Nathan Thatcher and performed by yMusic, Sheff describes the record as “not really an Okkervil River album and…also my favorite Okkervil River album,” the meaning of which remains to be seen.So far we only have one song to go by. ‘Okkervil River R.I.P.’ is a song about new beginnings and the necessary deaths needed in order for them to occur. As Sheff explains:

“I think this record was me taking my life back to zero and starting to add it all back up again, one plus one plus one. Any part that didn’t feel like it added up I left out. Eventually, I realized I was writing a death story for a part of my life that had, buried inside of it, a path I could follow that might let me go somewhere new.”

The track comes complete with a video written and directed by Will Sheff himself, starring Tim Blake Nelson of O Brother Where Art Thou? fame. Check it out below:

Brian S. Cassidy is a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter from Austin in Texas. Even if you don’t recognise the name, you’ve almost certainly heard his music talents, as he has spent years as a member of Okkervil River and as a sideman in Shearwater. Alpine Seas is his debut solo album, and one which allows him to display every talent he’s developed in his career. As if to emphasise the fact this is a solo album, Cassidy plays every instrument himself, from guitars and drums to mandolin, violin, pedal steel and trombone. On top of his multi-instrumentalist skills, he also recorded, mixed and mastered the whole thing himself, using just two sub-$100 microphones and an eight year old computer. We cover a lot of DIY self-recorded music here at WTD, but I’m struggling to think of one that sounds so great, so clear and polished.

The first track on Alpine Seas is ‘I’m An Ocean, which introduces the album’s tone and themes immediately. In terms of sound it could be filed alongside artists such as S. Carey, feeling somehow natural and panoramic, not unlike the landscape on the album art. ‘Beyond the Dark’ is a love song about finding peace in the quiet moments, evoking that period of time just before sunrise when the sky begins to brighten slowly and the hidden edges of the darkness become softer and less unknown. When life feels every bit as magical as it should.

“Beyond the glow there is a place
Where the shade bends with the night
Where I’ve been known to go
To help my mind hear my heart”

‘A Cruise’ has acoustic guitars and piano and the same undulating vocal melodies and electrified sense of the natural world that I associate with Bon Iver. ‘Arcadia’ is like one of the more upbeat songs from Evening Hymns and has shades of the same outlook, of finding solace and encouragement in nature, quite literally the classical notion of Arcadia. The song is imbued with a sense of hope and encouragement, a positive outlook that feels sometimes all too rare in serious, thoughtful art. “Walking in the pine wood / I feel I could say the words that could make you love me,” Cassidy sings, “I haven’t figured them out, but I’m gonna try / I haven’t asked you yet but I’m going to try, try, try”. ‘Uncompahgre’ is a rockin’ Americana track with pedal steel and talk of sunsets in the American West, the warm and rich acoustic guitar on ‘Make Believin’ accentuated with horns and layered vocals, and ‘Clare’s Bridge’ opens with glacial atmospherics before the entrance of big crunchy electric guitars. ‘The South’ is one of those songs that rises above its own sense of sorrow, feeling if not joyous then at least hopeful, with mandolin and charming backing vocals from Cassidy’s seven year old daughter.

“Do you remember all the times we spent
in our lives looking up at the stars?
How can you afford to
forget what I cannot?
Is it all the same?
Does it take all you got?”

‘Rich Man’ is a set in the aftermath of a break-up, all elegant piano and electric guitar, before ‘If I Could Right a Song’ offers a simple acoustic track about finding that mythical collection of words and chord changes that captures the hearts of society, a song that brings not just fortune and fame but also the love of the people you care about most.

Alpine Seas is a record about the wonder of the world and the fact that we’re alive in it. That feeling you get when looking at the star-scattered sky, the feeling of infinite smallness and insignificance before the vastness of the universe, the way your problems pale when held up to the persistent beauty of the natural world. Alpine Seas was released by Wren & Shark, a really cool not-for-profit independent record label who give 100% of proceeds directly to the artist. You can buy it now from the Brian S. Cassidy Bandcamp page.

City on Fire is the début full-length novel of Louisiana-born author Garth Risk Hallberg, which apparently had ten publishers bidding upwards of $1 million for the right to put it out (Knopf won with a sum close to $2 million). Add to that Jonathan Cape’s six-figure deal here in the UK, the film rights sold to Scott Rudin and the book’s formidable, 900-page length, and you will understand why the good old “Great American Novel” tag was taken off the shelf before the book was even released to reviewers.

Whether Garth Risk Hallberg lived up to the hype is up for debate. I’d suggest there is a certain ‘hype threshold’ past which people will ensure you get a fair share of criticism regardless of what’s between the covers. What is not up for discussion is the beauty of the writing on show, nor is the sheer scope of the world it brings to life. Here we find a network of characters linked by blood or love or sheer chance which grows through schizophrenic POV changes and creative interludes. To give you some idea: There’s Mercer, a man struggling with being gay and black in 1970s New York and his relationship with punk musician/artist William, heir to the Hamilton-Sweeney fortune who’s music with the now-defunct Ex Post Facto “seemed to promise complete freedom, on the condition of complete surrender”. Then there’s William’s estranged sister Regan and her troubled relationship with husband Keith, who are themselves caught up in the Hamilton-Sweeney machine, plus loser-loner Charlie and his friendship with punk cool-kid Sam, and their link to the Post-Humanist Phalanx. That’s not to mention the police detective, the art dealer, the shock jock radio presenter. The investigative journalist, the firework-setter, the transvestite keyboard player. The anarchistic, arsonist cult leader.

So… yeah, it’s all too detailed to review properly, though the key plot is strangely simple. Packed with the sort of suspense/drama you might expect from a film or television show, the book is not as challenging (difficult, ‘literary’) as you might expect. What Hallberg does achieve is to conjure New York at a specific time. The web of characters produce a panoramic snapshot of a generation, palpable nostalgia and a good sprinkling of well-used topics (troubled artists, drug addicts, traumatised and/or damaged lovers) creating a view of the seventies perhaps as we’d like to remember them. The spirit of the book is captured nicely near the beginning, when the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Day :

“For a second the city seemed to lean forward and make contact with a future self: ruined, de-peopled, and nearly still. In a sealed hanger, forensic economists move around numbered lots with scales and callipers. Believing themselves to have evolved beyond delusion and loneliness, beyond illness and longing and sex, they hum distractedly and wonder what it all meant”

As books go, City on Fire is pretty easy to soundtrack, so this playlist could have been a hundred songs. But anyway, here are twenty songs which go some way to capturing the time/place/mood Hallberg created. I’ve included a mix of classics and newer stuff to keep things interesting, and the order isn’t important.

We are delighted to present a new collaborative mix, this time with Songsfortheday, where we each picked 20 songs that were either recorded at live concerts or taken from sessions.

The title is taken from The Pharmacist’s Mate by Amy Fusselman, where she is describing that almost miraculous nature of music. She sums up by saying:

“And how even though the vibrations are invisible, I can feel them in the air. I can feel them, they are there, they are as there as I am.”

A song is a strange thing. The way in which the writer captures it and builds it up to what we find on our records and CDs is unique to each artist. A whole host of changes are possible from that first spark of inspiration, be it a certain lyric or series of notes. What we hear on studio albums may be an evolved version of the original. It may have been sped up or toned down, altered to sit with the other nine or ten songs with which it shares the album. Conversely, what we hear during live performance may itself be the evolved state, an shift of empahsis or tone to better suit the context.

Whatever changes occur, live songs are different to their recorded counterparts, and this mix contains songs that are different and/or special when performed live. Sometimes there are obvious differences from the recorded track (such as the frenzied ending to ‘Wolves’ by Phosphorescent) and other times it is subtler, increased emphasis on just a word or two. Sometimes there is nothing obviously different apart from some sense of purity, something organic in the single take delivery.

I’m sure even the most seasoned concert goer will be able to point to two or three moments where a live song somehow transcended normal experience, becoming something so inherently personal it’s hard to believe others were in the room. For me, great art is about the trading of emotions to some empathetic goal, the artist allowing the listener/viewer into themselves to see something pure, something to which everyday labels and descriptions do an injustice. In truly great art, seeing inside another is not fascinating in a some voyeuristic way but instead because it stirs a recognition in the listener. The indescribable feelings within us are given voice, they are painted for us by the artist and shared so that others can see. In this way, the song becomes as much about us as it is about the artist (something which much prove difficult for musicians, which is another debate entirely).

Adam wrote about his choices for the mix in his own blog post, so be sure to go and check that out too.

Hopefully the tracks below contain some sort of spark, that indesribable magic that Fusselman describes.

He says the album “doesn’t owe anything to music I’ve made before”. Having listened to the premiere track, Shock Corridor, I think it’s safe to say that the project will be a marked departure from that of Okkervil River, with a strong electro-pop vibe, although fans of the band will be happy to hear that Sheff’s distinctive vocals are still present. It sounds as though the whole thing will be available soon and for free, but in the meantime Shock Corridor is now available to stream via Soundcloud.
