We’ve covered a couple of singles from Tōth‘s new full-length And The Voice Said in recent months, first with ‘Spiraling‘ back in October. “Grounded by the signature trumpet and guitar, the song appears relatively spare on the surface,” we wrote of the song, “but as [Alex] Toth details an experience of precarious love it blossoms into something altogether richer and more immersive, the sound rising to meet the interior weather of its singer. The result manages to evoke the duality of human being, where benign surfaces mask roiling energy beneath the surface, always threatening to spill into the world.”

This sense of duality was no less of a feature on subsequent single, ‘Not Broken‘. “A track,” as we put it, “which confronts a default setting of negativity with its polar opposite, looking to puncture pessimism by sheer force of will.” With the release of the record fast approaching via EggHunt Records and Northern Spy Records, Tōth has unveiled a brand new single ‘Thoughts Are Like Clouds’, and again the song embraces apparent contradiction in order to explore its themes more fully.

Described as an ode to meditation, ‘Thoughts Are Like Clouds’ pairs a ruminative sound with immediate, stream-of-conscious-style delivery, allowing Tōth to convey how an ostensibly disciplined, rigouress practice can in reality lead to states of curiosity and freedom. A sense of rhythm runs through the track too, as though to reinforce the fact meditation is not some static experience but one of genuinely fluidity, though as the song develops a certain sense of chaos and desperation seep into its sound. A reminder that for all of the knowledge and self-acceptance which can stem from such reflection, there’s no bulletproof method to insulate yourself from the pressures of living.

“I’m pretty sure I was in a recovery meeting and a friend of mine shared with the group in a thick New York accent ‘thoughts are like clouds in the sky of your brain or whatever’ and it tickled me deeply,” Tōth explains. “Also that description came up in one of my daily meditation readings. You need only to witness and let the clouds pass (…or whatever). The thing about spiritual practice and spirituality for me is: It’s deadly serious but it only works if I don’t take it or myself too seriously. I love how disciplined practices like meditation and staying sober help me be the most free and child-like.”

Perhaps best known as part of Brooklyn art pop duo Rubblebucket, Alex Toth also records under the moniker Tōth, using the project for the more intimate and vulnerable side of his work. Released in 2021, most recent album You And Me And Everything typified the unguarded honesty of the project, exploring the experience of falling in love in the aftermath of a long-term relationship. A release as unpredictable as it was vulnerable, Tōth blending confessional folk and experimental jazz to try to communicate what might otherwise prove difficult to convey.

With a new release on the horizon via Egghunt Records and Northern Spy, Tōth has shared the single ‘Spiraling’ as an early preview. Grounded by the signature trumpet and guitar, the song appears relatively spare on the surface, but as Toth details an experience of precarious love it blossoms into something altogether richer and more immersive, the sound rising to meet the interior weather of its singer. The result manages to evoke the duality of human being, where benign surfaces mask roiling energy beneath the surface, always threatening to spill into the world. “Trance / the zombie walk of your and my romance,” he sings in the opening lines, “distracting us until our eyes could open / the feeling that we never stood a chance / this is dangerous I need to relax.”

It comes complete with a video shot by in one take Michael Leviton at Owl Music Parlor, a visual equivalent of the song featuring Toth himself, where everything is stripped back to apparent simplicity, only for new layers of meaning to emerge. “You can see me losing my mind over the course of the video,” he says. “At one point the mic literally falls apart, and I’m trying to keep it together while singing ‘When I’m really woke I won’t be scared to listen…’ It’s chaos, but the perfect metaphor for the song.”

Bernardo – Bobby’s Song

Recording under the moniker Bernardo, vocalist, guitarist and producer Sonia Bernardo combines elements of jazz, indie rock and alt-soul to create songs which owe equal debts to her Portuguese and British heritage. Last week saw the release of Secrets Of Six-Figure Women, Bernardo’s debut full-length album which builds upon the promise of early releases to realise this sound fully—a record packed with confidence and sophistication which meditates on what it means to strive and desire within contemporary society. Single ‘Bobby’s Song’ serves as an ideal entry for the uninitiated, highlighting the sleek mood, intricate detail and assured attitude of the release as a whole.

EERA – Honey, do you see me

The recording project of Berlin-based Norwegian artist Anna Lena Kirsten Bruland, EERA has made a mark in recent years with a moody brand of dream pop. New full-length I’ll stop when I’m done, coming soon via Test Card Recordings, has picked a suitably evocative subject to further the style. Taking its title from a quote by Marilyn Monroe, the album explores the lives of the iconic starlets of Hollywood’s Golden Era, as well as those of the characters they brought to life on the silver screen. Ahead of the album’s release, EERA has shared new single ‘Honey, do you see me’, a track inspired by Billy Wilder’s sixties classic The Apartment. “I was fascinated by the fact that the main character (an intelligent and beautiful woman) is madly in love with a man who has a wife and the boss of a big company,” Bruland explains. “It affected her self-confidence with this man playing with her feelings, promising her the ‘world’ etc. I wanted to write a song from her side of the story but also exaggerate these types of feelings in the song, where you almost feel a bit mad. The desperation of trying to be loved by someone who really doesn’t want to be with you takes over your self-worth. You forget about yourself, and all the focus is on him.”

I’ll Stop When I’m Done will be released on the 26th September via Test Card Recordings.

ear – Ceremony

The project of Yaelle Avtan and Jonah Paz, ear make glitchy collages of indie pop and electronic music that draw on the duo’s background in “experimental electronic hardcore” and twee folk. Following some near-viral success on streaming services with early singles, ear recently released their debut album The Most Dear and the Future, which presents their unique and oddly compelling style to the world proper. Each of the eight songs are short and sweet, slipping effortlessly from gentle, near-whispered pop to headphone-shaking electronica in the blink of an eye. It all feels very now. Like indie pop for the age of short form video, kind of wild and hyperactive but also sad and lonely in a way that’s not easy to describe, nostalgic for something that has never existed. It would fit on the soundtrack to the next Jane Schoenbrun film for sure. You could really start anywhere, but ‘Ceremony’s is my current favourite, so check it out below.

The Most Dear and The Future by ear
The Most Dear and the Future is out now and available from the ear Bandcamp page.

His His – Hardcore Band

We last wrote about His His, AKA Toronto-based songwriter Aidan Belo, back in October 2024 with the release of EP Good Gold, with songs like ‘My Friend Wants to be a Freemason‘ offering “a gentle and folk-inflected [sound] that wears an air of weary wistfulness like the grain in an old film photograph.” Now Belo is returning with brand new EP ’25 via Victory Pool, and single ‘Hardcore Band’ indicates the direction of the release. Recorded entirely to a Tascam cassette deck, the track finds His His at its most fuzzy and intimate, maintaining the earnest tone which has long marked the project and dialling up the closeness through a gauze of DIY texture. Lyrically, the song takes on the age old problem of any folk songwriter. Namely, all of your friends wishing you were in something cooler like a hardcore band instead.

’25 by His His
’25 will be released on the 3rd November and you can pre-order it now from Bandcamp.

Jamie Lidell & Luke Schneider – The Passing

Fans of experimental music will no doubt be familiar with Jamie Lidell and Luke Schneider, the former one of the UK’s premier practitioners of neo-soul, the latter a renowned pedal steel player pioneering within the genre of ambient country. But their new collaborative album is something different. One designed to aid in the inner explorations brought about by Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy, and awake to the true depths of art’s potential. “A mind is often found more exposed during psychedelic experiences,” Lidell explains. “Specifically in a therapeutic setting, where trust is key to approach issues and work through events in the way of growth. This is music to support and guide the listening with or without psychedelic sensory heightening.” Single ‘The Passing’ is a suitably immersive introduction, regardless of whether you go in sober or substance-assisted.

Jonny Tex – Heifer

Hailing from Boston, MA, Jonny Tex is a youth pastor turned songwriter who makes what has been described as “post-faith slacker rock.” Out via Happene Twice, debut single Heifer / Cherubhead welcomes listeners into this distinctive style, with the lead track pairing playfulness, peculiarity and something more grievous. A song inspired by “Texas floods and Southern dread” which twists the easygoing rhythms and droll swagger of the slacker genre into strange shapes, a sense of desperation needling beneath the surface as the clatter of percussion veers between roguish and unnerving. “I don’t wanna be / Cattle in a flash flood where I’m / Tangled in the trees,” as Tex sings in one verse. “Sucking on salinity for all eternity / Buried by the water that just washes over me / Everything i had / I’d give it all away.”

Southern California singer-songwriter Mia Wilson is preparing to release her self-titled debut full-length via Royal Oakie Records this November. The album continues the lineage of LA records from the sixties and seventies, taking inspiration from released like Tapestry by Carole King, Heart Food by Judee Sill and Jackson Browne’s Late For the Sky. Latest single ‘Face To Face’ embodies the lush, honeyed light of this sound, not to mention Wilson’s warm and wistful croon. What results is something rich and welcoming and charged with longing, Wilson’s piano, Wurlitzer and Rhodes accentuated by further instrumentation from Skyler Lusteg (bass buitar, acoustic guitar) and Tim Ramsey (acoustic and electric guitars, organ, percussion, bass VI, Mellotron, pedal steel, bass harmonica, string).

Petey USA – Anything In Between

Earlier in the year, Petey USA released The Yips, a concept album set within the fictional dive bar The Yips Tavern, imagining a series of interactions between the diverse clientele who all, in one way or another, struggle through life and experience the dreaded titular phenomenon. Ahead of a fall headline tour, Petey is releasing A Case of The Yips, a new extended version of the record complete with three bonus tracks, one of which is being released now as a single. Described by the artist as “a song about being scared about any possible outcome,” ‘Anything In Between’ was written as a b-side to album favourite ‘Ask Someone Else’ though is far more than a handmaid. Better to think of it as the small devil on the shoulder versus the angel of ‘Ask Someone Else’, corrupting the encouragement of the previous track with a creeping sense of doubt. But, true to the Petey USA sound, the result burns through its anxious concern with equal parts unguarded sincerity and cathartic momentum, making for a worthy addition to barstools at The Yips.

A Case Of Yips will be released later this year.

Weirs – Everlasting

“To ponder whether Weirs exist in defiance or deference of their forebears is to miss the point completely. This is not an attempt to raze conventions, nor reproduce them. But rather imagine how folk could and should sound today.” So we wrote of the North Carolina outfit’s new album Diamond Grove, coming next month via Dear Life Records. Lead single ‘‘I Want to Die Easy’ introduced the style. “A hymn” as we continued, “delivered not from the still air and stone of a cathedral but God’s own Earth,” and now Weirs have returned with new track ‘Everlasting’ to further ground the album’s terrestrial textures. It’s an instrumental recorded during a late night improvisation session and furthered with layers of field recordings. These additional sounds range from drain grates at wastewater plants and street preachers in bus terminals to a walk the old “cow cemetery” in the woods at Diamond Grove farm and scooping cheese curd from the vat in Cedar Grove. The result feels like an accumulation of the area’s history, years superimposed to create something able to transcend the ordinary flow of time.

Binker & Moses – Accelerometer Overdose

The recording project of saxophonist Binker Golding and drummer and composer Moses Boyd, Binker & Moses are representative of a new wave of acts within London who look to combine the jazz tradition with hip-hop, Caribbean rhythms and various electronic styles. The latest single from forthcoming record Feeding The Machine on Gearbox Records, ‘Accelerometer Overdose’ welcomes the tape loops of Max Luthert, pushing things into ambient territory and further increasing the possibilities of the Binker & Moses sound.

Sun June – Somewhere + 3

Last year saw the release of Sun June’s excellent album Somewhere on Run For Cover Records, which recently featured on our Albums We Missed in 2021 feature. The record was released from isolation, and when the band were finally able to get back together they channelled both the frustration of those lost months and the joy of being reunited into new songs. The result is Somewhere + 3, a deluxe edition of last year’s record with three previously unreleased tracks.

The vibe of these new songs is captured perfectly on lead single ‘Easy’. “[It] is a romantic struggle song,” explains says Laura Colwell. “It’s about love and partnership and longstanding arguments that are hard to get past.”

Widowspeak – Everything is Simple

“Everything is simple ’til it’s not,” sings Molly Hamilton of Widowspeak on ‘Everything is Simple’, the lead single from the New York duo’s forthcoming album, The Jacket. It’s a song about how things grow complicated with time, how even situations which begin as pure potential eventually become knotted with limitations, and how, unreliable narrators that we are, we often bend reality to adapt. But despite that, the song sounds surprisingly vibrant, unfurling with a patient confidence that we’ve come to expect from Widowspeak. Check out the video, directed by OTIUM, below:

The Jacket is out via Captured Tracks on the 11th March and you can pre-order it now from the Widowspeak Bandcamp page.

Good Good Blood – The Dizzying Parade

Back in November we introduced you to The Dizzying Parade, the latest album from Good Good Blood on Team Love Records, with single ‘Green Bank’. “A densely layered track which balances a propelling drum beat with an dreamy weightlessness,” we described, “Smith’s vocals finding that neo-psychedelic line between attitude and ethereality.” Ahead of the album’s release this week, Good Good Blood have unveiled the title track. Another propulsive song which gradually builds in intensity as it unfolds, the tension growing and growing before unravelling into a sonic kaleidoscope of colour and sound. A finale as disorientating as the title suggests.

Allegra Krieger – Taking It In

Brooklyn-based songwriter Allegra Krieger is back with Precious Thing, a new LP out via Northern Spy Records this spring. Lead single ‘Taking It In’ introduces the album’s distinctively inviting and wistful sound, Krieger’s gentle croon sitting within a changeable arrangement of strings that conjure the sense of memories ebbing and flowing around the present moment. “Where am I now? Where was I three years ago?” she asks, “Where is my mother where is anyone I know?” Check out the video by Samuel Ogoe, Melissa Lozada-Oliva and Koa Ho below:

chores – Trip Wire

chores are a post punk slash dream pop band from Rochester NY. They recently released their debut single, ‘Trip Wire’, taken from a forthcoming EP. It’s a wonderful introduction, the kind of lo-fi indie pop gem that would be right at home on an early 90s Sarah Records sampler. As the title suggests, it’s a song about trying to avoid all those little everyday triggers that spark anxiety. As lead Heather Swenson sings “it’s a thick mire, avoiding any tripwire / that could signal friendly fire somewhere in my brain, so many times a day.”

Trip Wire by chores

‘Trip Wire’ is out now and you can get it as a name-your-price download from the chores Bandcamp page.

Melk – Yankee Division Highway

Self-described “aspiring optimists” from Washington D.C., Melk make dreamy, punky indie pop that nevertheless traverse some pretty serious emotional depths. Comprising of Melissa Kain (guitar & vocals), AJ DiGregorio (bass) and Alex Scheuer (drums), Melk have just released their second EP, a three-song collection called Somebody, Nobody, Anybody. The standout is the slow-burning final track, ‘Yankee Division Highway’, a song the band say is “about how apathy can erode the trust you have in loved ones.” Kain guides us through the patient build, matching the intensity of the instrumentation before drifting into a rueful croon.

Somebody, Nobody, Anybody by Melk
Somebody, Nobody, Anybody is out now and you can get it from the Melk Bandcamp page.

Carrie Biell – See Through the Trees

“I’ve been living my whole damn life trying to make everybody feel alright,” sings Seattle-based singer-songwriter Carrie Biell in latest single, ‘See Through the Trees’. “Maybe I’m sick of trying.” The line captures the track’s strange relationship between uncertainty and conviction, where beliefs are felt with palpable force even when solutions might not be easy or accessible. “This is about feeling maxed out in life by people and life commitments,” Biell explains, “but still trying to open up and be vulnerable in a new relationship. It’s about responding to your own needs while also giving to a new partner and learning to trust.”

See Through The Trees by Carrie Biell
‘See Through the Trees’ is out now and available from the Carrie Biell Bandcamp page.

Modern Nature – Performance

Rising from the ashes of previous band Ultimate Painting, Modern Nature is the new moniker of London‘s Jack Cooper. A project which takes the compositions and songwriting developed with Ultimate Painting and builds upon them with a newfound willingness to improvise and experiment. This month sees the release of latest record Island Of Noise on Bella Union, with lead single ‘Performance’ offering a glimpse of what’s to come. A song “written from the perspective of someone seeing or realising something overwhelming for the first time,” as Cooper puts it, consisting of a multitude of moving parts that mimic a kind of irrepressible curiosity.

Check out the video by Conan Roberts, Phoebe Cooper and Cooper himself below:

Pompey – Overwhelmed

Montreal based artist Pompey has played in a variety of acts within the city, lending his talents to the likes of Thanya Iyer, Corey Gulkin and Paper Beat Scissors, but Overwhelmed is the first full-length album of his own. Released by Anything Bagel, the record is a self-professed pandemic album. A product not so much of the prolonged anxiety of the present but rather Pompey’s methods of coping. A deliberate search for comfort and kindness within the constant pressure, carving out a space in which to rest. The title track illustrates the mood as good as any on the record, delivered with a deliberate tenderness which invites the listener to share the safe harbour for a while.

Nuisance – Kuchisabishii

A collaboration between William J. Seidel and Ryan E. Weber (REW<<, Eric & Magill), Nuisance craft a version of dream pop coloured by folk and classical sensibilities, though the process is far more notable than that. Weber spent two years recording instruments and coding them into software, building up a library of sounds which can be downloaded at Poetic Devices. After such a laborious process, the pair decided their first use of the program should be as immediate as possible, and the first Nuisance album Kuchisabishii, (out now via Katuktu Collective) came together in just two days. A shifting, impressionistic exploration of intimacy and immediacy, it’s a wonderful example of music made from the ground up, from atomic level building blocks to an album-sized ecosystem.

Don’t Worry – Crushing Weight / Head’s Chocka

Fronted by co-leads Ronan Van Kehoe and Samuel Watson, Don’t Worry have won recognition with their blend of wry observation and nostalgic charm. Following last year’s single ‘As If By Magic‘, the outfit are returning with full-length Remorseless Swing on Specialist Subject Records, and the first singles suggest the Don’t Worry style is evolving in several directions beyond their indie rock/emo roots. Be it the poppy (or poppier) rhythms of ‘Crushing Weight’ or the sweet romance of ‘Head’s Chocka’, though the lyrics still have signature flashes of wit.

Why can’t we just take this moment
Flatter it with rapturous applause and leave early doors
Listen, my head is chocka
But I can no longer forget here and now

Oh, how
I’m tongue tied over you

Back in 2017, New York’ Allegra Krieger released Circles, a collection of eight songs that pushed the boundaries of what constitutes folk music. Displaying an experimental mindset, Krieger fleshed out the tracks with an almost avant garde sensibility, the laid back atmosphere belying the detailed and often eccentric arrangements. But none of this suffocated the true centre of the sound, Krieger’s vocals capable of confessional whispers and warm croons and dramatic rises in emotion too, marking Circles as not only an inventive but emotionally-resonant record.

Having recently signed with Northern Spy Records, Allegra Krieger is back with a brand new single, ‘The Push and The Pull’. Intended as a “reflection on each person’s capacity to experience great emotional heights and depths,” the song builds on what came before to create a nuanced atmosphere capable of evoking the entire spectrum of human feeling. Again there is an easy-going rhythm to the track that draws the listener in, though it’s soon apparent that there are competing currents beneath the surface calm.

It’s in the pull and roll of these unseen yet powerful forces that Krieger pitches her songs. ‘The Push and The Pull’ displays every bit of the duality and tension that its title suggests. The competition of emotions, the peaks and the troughs, but also the strange inertia that might result. For, when subject to equal and opposite forces, the end result is often the opposite of change. Allegra Krieger isn’t here to pretend that such turmoil is also some transformative event, rather help us appreciate that there is beauty in process of living in any case.

The sad, simple truth,
no matter what you do
some things always remain.
The sad thing to know
no matter where you go
you will still feel the same

But how beautiful,
the push and the pull,
of the human race

‘The Push and The Pull’ is out now via Northern Spy Records, and the Allegra Krieger’s debut full-length album will be released later this year.

Anyone familiar with Wilder Maker will know they are a band ambitious in scope and human in concern, employing a diverse sound and detailed style to fully capture life on the ground in Brooklyn, New York. Last year’s Zion signalled a complete realisation of this ideal, viewed by lead writer Gabriel Birnbaum as the first chapter of a musical novel that will map his bustling milieu. Along with collaborators Katie Von Schleicher, Nick Jost (Baroness), Adam Brisbin (Sam Evian, Jolie Holland) and Sean Mullins, Birnbaum’s polyphonic creation was a rich and nuanced city of its own, sweeping the casual listener into its trash-scented warmth and leaving a plenitude of breadcrumbs for the obsessives and paranoiacs to pick over.

Wilder Maker are back with a double single that picks up where the album left off, adding new layers to the environment it brought to life. “To me both songs are sort of an extension of the Zion universe,” Birnbaum explains. “For example, the character “Cal” appears in ‘Rose Room’ and he’s also the character that the narrator is talking to in ‘Cocaine Man’ off the LP. I like the idea of the same characters reappearing over and over so that I can create a whole universe that’s full of its own connections and clues and locations, the way some authors do.”

First track ‘Love So Well’ is a slow shake of a country song emanating from the aftermath of a relationship, a still, wistful space created when your dreams slide from the canvas and through the cracks in the floor. However, as Von Schleicher’s warm croon suggests, the experience is not entirely unpleasant, something in the fresh air and blank space possessing a soothing effect, as though love was but a fever dream that breaks upon dawn, reduced to flashes of heat and light that haunt the morning air.

As the light falls from my face
All my history is outpaced I find
A new peace of mind
headlights start to dot the lanes
I could be anyone
I aim my future with my hands
I am no one now

Casting itself into the demented world we call our own, ‘Rose Room’ is rock strung out and noodling, shot through with an electric frisson that might be exhilaration or rising dread. How do we keep our heads, the song asks, when our environment is so manic and strange? How can faith in a prevailing good persevere in a place like this? The questions are followed not by blind hope or nihilistic despair but rather a queasy sense of purpose, the vertiginous realisation that there’s no benevolent or correcting force driving home the importance of one’s own actions, with just a thin line of chance and happenstance between survival and ruin.
