The release of As Far As The Eye Can See is fast approaching, and Van Chamberlain are back with brand new track ‘Fantasy TBD’ to keep the momentum going. What might be the band’s most propulsive single to date, the song grapples with the long tail of a break-up, attempting to break free from the spell of a relationship that won’t quite let you go. “We felt like a song about breaking free needed to literally sound like breaking free, so we turned the ’67 Vibrolux up to ten and let the breakup of the amp reflect the breakup in the lyrics,” Chamberlain explains. “This might be the loudest song off the new record, and it also might be the most cathartic.”

Back in June we introduced Recurring Common Dream, the forthcoming EP from Great Klons, describing how the release ups the ante on its rather chaotic predecessor. Written and recorded amid a time of turmoil both personal and political, the EP sees Scott Klon and co. expand their already inventive, genre-bending sound to match the uncertainty of the moment. After lead single ‘More Beauty in the Rain‘, Great Klons are now back with follow-up ‘Hidden Signage’. A vivid slice of indie pop rooted in both driving percussion and fresh guitar which uses vocal harmonies and electric violin to further amp up the emotional resonance. And emotional the track is, proceeding with a decidedly wistful air, reflecting on imperfect times with the inevitable fondness we hold for the past.

henry o henry – The Fool

Born in Dublin but now “thirty years a US immigrant,” henry o henry makes music that observes the US from the perspective of an adopted son. He has spent years “absorbing the country’s mythologies” while working various trades across the country (an image that evokes Whitman’s I Hear America Singing), but he has retained ties with his roots too. “Ireland is the DNA of the thing,” as he puts it, “the thing before every other thing.” In September, he will release an album Apocrypha on Western Vinyl. It brings together a collection songs in the lineage of Cale and Drake and Cohen, which function as dispatches from his personal vantage point, or as the press release puts it “the specific weight of being somewhere for a long time without quite being from there.” Lead single ‘The Fool’ is the ideal entry point, a song worn and wistful and weathered but with a glint in its eye, moving with a sincerity and easy grace that comes with experience.

Josaleigh Pollett – Cherry

We’ve written about Josaleigh Pollett‘s new full-length If I Let It Quiet plenty in recent months, with singles like ‘Radio Player‘, ‘The Witness‘, ‘Like a River‘ and ‘Bed of Quiet‘ all suggesting the album will be a fitting follow-up to its predecessor In the Garden, By The Weeds. With the record out now via Audio Antihero and Lavender Vinyl, the Salt Lake City-based artist has shared final single ‘Cherry’ in celebration, and the track is every bit as evocative as we’ve come to expect. Displaying Pollett’s uncanny ability to combine the resonant emotion of memory with the tactility of the present moment, the song emerges through dappled electronics and announces itself with forthright clarity.

Jude Brothers – Desire & Devotion

Jude Brothers describes herself as an “Arkansas-forged and New Mexico-moulded folksy leaning singer songwriter with a penchant for whimsy and tender heartedness,” which is just about the perfect introduction. Later this year, she will release Dogwood Maiden Voyage, a collection of timeless folk songs built on the foundations of harp and voice, which she says “reckons with the costs of surrendering wholly to love.” Latest single ‘Desire & Devotion’ does just that, a hymn-like timeless folk song that is suffused with all the doomed romance of a Brontë novel. “How can you doubt me now?” Brothers asks in the line that gives the track its title, “My love ain’t no solemn vow! It is a churning sea.”

King’s Evil – S/T

Stemming from a discussion at a tiki bar back in early 2020, King’s Evil is a new project between Sami Martasian of Puppy Problems and JM Dussault of (T-T)b. The pair, already established as some of Boston‘s most interesting songwriters, imagined a new vehicle for songwriting where the stakes were slightly lower and the scope for invention expanded. A place where they might take risks otherwise avoided in their usual work. The eventual result, a self-titled EP coming via Worry Bead Records, is a testament to the power of such a spirit of working, one which eschews the usual desire to plan and demo songs in order to fully lean into the moment, not to mention that of collaboration. “To hear them say it,” as the label states, “King’s Evil is a project explicitly about the community and solidarity you build in proximity to other artists you admire. Finding energy and freedom in allowing someone else you admire to figuratively root around in your brain.” Listen to the title track now:

Legit Smitty – Picture In My Wallet

Jake Smith, aka Legit Smitty, wrote his forthcoming new record This Living Ain’t That Hard following a serious car accident while on family vacation in Hawaii. Such a near-death event understandably brought a newfound perspective, and the album is an expression of that. As Smith puts it, he is more determined than ever to “continue to share his heart in order that others might feel more at home in their own skin.” Latest single ‘Picture In My Wallet’ is a good introduction, a downbeat but still hopeful song which Smith says “details how his love will remain unchanging, as will his faults.”

oh, hooray – MY BROTHER’S NEW BLACK EYE

A few weeks ago we featured a couple of tracks from the city has teeth i think i saw them once, the new record from Houston‘s oh, hooray. We described those songs as “fatalistic, furious and at least halfway triumphant,” calling them “dispatches from the American present, a time we might label ‘late capitalism’ if only the late didn’t seem such an overly optimistic diagnosis.” That description holds up across the record, but some songs are more personal in scope than others. A good example is ‘MY BROTHER’S NEW BLACK EYE’, which details an exasperating relationship with the title’s mercurial sibling. “‘MY BROTHER’S NEW BLACK EYE’ is about my brother,” describes lead Jamie McDonald. “I love him, I hate him, I am confused by him, I support him, I resent him. No matter how much he has alienated myself or my family, he will always be just that. My Brother.”

Promiseland BBQ x Tory Silver – Where’d All the Firemen Go?

Promiseland BBQ is the recording project of Ross Weidman, originally from West Virginia and now based in Pasadena. We last featured his music back in 2023, writing about the album Murder In The Friendly City, which explored his parents hometown in blue collar Appalachia following the death of his mother. He released another EP, Promiseland BBQ Airways, last year, and is now back with a new standalone single, ‘Where Did All the Firemen Go?’ Altogether more lighthearted than the last album, Wediman says the song, a full band arrangement including Tory Silver on vocals, “imagine[s] a world where everyone got the job they wanted,” a laidback and swaying country rock jam that sees a cast of characters swap professions and bemoans the loss of a certain brand of smalltown hero.

Sand Duney – Saw You In the Roses

September will see the release of Plant Material, the debut full-length from Sand Duney (Portland, Oregon songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jess Jones), via the triple threat of Orindal Records, Anything Bagel and Bud Tapes. As per the press release, the record “explores a deepening of selfhood, love, and understanding the natural world,” while searching for “hope and a daily rhythm in a world that’s changing in massive and indecipherable ways.” Our first glimpse is ‘Saw You In the Roses’ a giddy, ambling psych pop song that continues the signature Sand Duney style, what we have described in the past as “equal parts meditative and energetic.” Jones plays every instrument, from guitar and bass to pedal steel, organ and drums, layers which reel and swim around her relaxed and composed vocals. Sera Cahoone – Not How I Hoped

Alongside drumming for acts such Carissa’s Wierd and Band of Horses, Seattle’s Sera Cahoone has developed rich oeuvre of solo work, starting with the dusky, melancholic self-titled album back in 2006. Twenty Years on, Cahoone is preparing to release her fifth full-length I’ve Missed You All These Years via Sub Pop, and it seems time has only deepened her warm and aching sound. As its title suggests, latest single ‘Not How I Hoped’ confronts disappointment and regret with unerring candour, the clarity of Cahoone’s voice supported by a vivid arrangement featuring violin, pedal steel, piano and Hammond organ. “This song flew out of my broken heart many moons ago,” Cahoone explains. “It was the first song I wrote for this record. It’s quite sad, but writing it really helped me work through those hard feelings.”

W. Y. Huang – Running Into Walls

Last month, we introduced On Stranger Hills, the forthcoming new record from Singapore-born, New York-based singer-songwriter W. Y. Huang. Lead single ‘Born to Lose’ “owe[d] a debut to both Daniel Johnston and Adrienne Lenker and drawing on [Huang’s] own immigrant experience,” and now W.Y. Huang has unveiled a second track to further generate anticipation. Titled ‘Running Into Walls’, it’s an introspective indie folk song that the press release says “stages a tender reckoning with inherited trauma and the unbearable weight of survival.” It’s set during a late-night train ride, and captures perfectly the sense of solitude and emotional clarity that such journeys often evoke, mimicking the brain’s tendency to ruminate as the carriage falls silent and dark landscapes fly past the window.

The track was just the first of what promises to be a steady stream throughout the summer, and now Tough Old Bird have returned with its successor, ‘Shape of Our Love’. Continuing to display the newly electrified version of the project, the track sees the Corrigans and co. straddle the traditional and the contemporary, maintaining the narrative and emotional heft of classic folk while always striding forwards. With a central protagonist reflecting on their life, the mood is at once poignant and affirming, seeming to possess the kind of wisdom only earned through a life well lived yet in no way insulated from the raw tenderness such existence brings. “I brought a few things from my real life into this song—the moment I met my wife, the old house we live in and the little traces of everyone who inhabited the space before us,” Nathan Corrigan explains. “I think the character in the song is looking back over their life without judgment. It’s as if you could speak to the people who live in your house after you’re gone and say, ‘this is what I did and didn’t accomplish, here’s what I thought was important at the time.’”

Back in 2024, Richmond, Virginia’s canaries released a self-titled EP, six songs that announced their brand of noisy lo-fi fuzz pop. One home-recorded demo aside, they have been quiet since then, that is until returning last week with a double single, released to coincide with a short tour with fellow Richmond locals Star Sign. Both new songs are great, but opener ‘horsepower’ just about takes it. The opening minute is a wordless rush, raw guitar and building percussion gathering into something genuinely exhilarating. Highly recommended if you like your pop songs on the heavier side and slathered in shoegaze-ish fuzz.

Frontlawn – Jenny Says

New Oberlin-based project Frontlawn have unveiled their debut single ‘Jenny Says’ as a calling card for their tender style of folk. The recording project of songwriters Tyler Buckser-Schulz and Viv Tullis, as well as a variety of friends, Frontlawn is clearly a labour of love, and their lead single sets out their intentions from the off. Recorded live to further the emotional immediacy of the sound, ‘Jenny Says’ is subtle but undeniably rich, possessing the closeness of bedroom pop yet brought to life by a full band, including Meredith Grotevant’s lap steel which adds a wistful country twang. Lyrically, the track is thoughtful and earnest, able to conjure both specific moments and images as well as a more reflective assessment of life’s constant yearning. An act to keep an eye on for sure.

Great Klons – More Beauty in the Rain

“[An] inventive collision of genres, as indie rock, psych, folk and Krautrock influences all coalesce into a singular sound able to explore ideas of instability within the contemporary moment.” So we wrote of an EP by Great Klons back in 2024, songwriter Scott Klon drawing on a wide palette to meet a chaotic present. Though if the circumstances surrounding that release were tumultuous, then latest EP Recurring Common Dream only ups the ante. Devasting wildfires, parental illness, the encroachment of pernicious technology… and that’s just on lead single ‘More Beauty in the Rain’. The track has a decidedly mid-00s feel, carved out of a blend of organic and digital textures and lifted by male-female harmonies, simmering as though always on the verge of firing into something altogether more propulsive yet for the most part retaining its understated, tonally ambiguous rhythm.

Hadnot Creek – The End Of The Road

Back in May we introduced Hadnot Creek, the recording project of Charlottesville songwriter Robert Sawrey and his rotating band of supporting musicians (including former members of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah and Kendall Street Company, no less), in preparation for the release of new full-length The End Of The Road. After single ‘River of Love’ gave a flavour of what to expect (“fans of the likes of James McMurty are sure to find much to love,” as we wrote, “Hadnot Creek sketching a decidedly existential picture of life and death without losing a toe-tapping rhythm”), Sawrey and co. are back with the title track. “[The song] is loosely based on two things,” he explains. “An ill advised camping trip to Vermont I took in 1976 (yes I’m that old) and the suicide of an old friend who battled bouts of mental illness. He was a gifted poet and naturalist.” The result is every bit as evocative as you might expect from this description, with vivid imagery (“Black flies so thick / you could kill them with a rake”) combining with an overarching sense of reflection to paint a picture of a man at the dead of night. A person lost in the wilderness or else the dark twists of his own head and confessing as much as plainly as he knows how.

Hana Stretton – salt / stove

Hana Stretton returns later this summer with a brand new record, the much-anticipated follow-up to 2023 sleeper hit Soon. Titled tiarn, the collection of eleven songs was self-recorded in small-town coastal Australia, taking inspiration from the experience of watching whales pass on a nearby migration route to ruminate on feelings of anxiety and loss caused by living through ecological crisis. Stretton takes this heavy subject matter and spins it into something characteristically calm and evocative, as evidenced by lead singles ‘salt’ and ‘stove’. Fans of Soon will instantly recognise the spacious compositions and warm production, but the first two songs hint at a step toward the ambient, with diverse samples and careful electronics evoking a whole world, ambiguous and dreamlike. Lesley Mok – williams landing

Based in New York City, Lesley Mok is a percussionist and interdisciplinary artist whose work spans sound, installation, film and theatre. Next month, Mok will release a new record, titled transient, which label American Dreams describe as “an assemblage of sonic vignettes suffused with introversion, poignancy, nostalgia, and contemplative observation.” Named after the street where Mok grew up, latest single ‘williams landing’ is a piece of opaque but strangely affecting ambient music that not only explores the uncanny nature of memory but attempts to evoke it in the listener. “Memories can feel both elusive and fuzzy in the way they sit in my body,” Mok explains. “But sometimes with a bit of attention and time, details come into focus, and a once-vague memory can suddenly become clear, like a photo negative. I hope that this track can be a space where listeners can resonate with the experience of remembering, no matter how fleeting or fragmentary a memory might be.”

oh, hooray is a little more than your usual folk pop outfit. Describing themselves as “an art project that makes celebratory sad music,” the band practise a multimedia approach, supporting their sound with everything from film and stop motion to theatrical and dance-centred performance. In the wrong hands, such artistic diversity might prioritise style or substance, but as latest LP the city has teeth i think i saw them once attests, oh, hooray is rooted in an authentic and impassioned emotional core. Take recent single ‘WASTELAND2’, a slow burn slice of bedroom pop which paints the current moment with equal parts devotion and doom. Or sister track ‘STATISTICALLY ME’, which channels Bright Eyes in its fervent, almost desperate delivery. Both songs play like dispatches from the American present, a time we might label ‘late capitalism’ if only the late didn’t seem such an overly optimistic diagnosis. Fatalistic, furious and at least halfway triumphant, if only because they still have the energy to raise their voice to scream.

Piu – Home

Piu might be the solo recording project of Vancouver Island-based songwriter and composer Priyanka Chakrabarti, but new album Milao is anything but the product of a single person. With a title which translates as “to come together,” the record turns to family history, drawing on the songs and melodies made familiar by the matriarchal line of Chakrabarti’s lineage, passed down the generations and ultimately from Chakrabarti’s mother to herself. The result is at once highly personal and inherently historical, rooted in specific details yet shaped by the partition and other national events. Latest single ‘Home’ is the ideal introduction, where layers of modular and analogy synths combine with striking vocals to create a sound expansive enough to do such grand themes justice. “‘Home’ explores the idea of finding belonging within yourself, wherever you are,” Chakrabarti explains. “Written from experiences of moving through unfamiliar spaces, the piece reflects the search for connection amid uncertainty and change. ‘Home’ is both a place of return and an ongoing process of becoming.”

Shredded Sun – Skyscraper

All three members of Chicago indie rock band Shredded Sun, that’s Nick Ammerman, Sarah Ammerman and Ben Bilow, previously played in trash-pop outfit Fake Fictions, which “tore through Chicago’s underground from 2004 to 2009.” Later, they reinvented themselves as Shredded Sun, which despite not fully hitting its groove until 2022, has been pretty prolific since then. Their sound pulls ingredients from all corners of the indie rock pantry, resulting in something that feels both reassuringly familiar and freshly unpredictable. Later this summer, Shredded Sun will release a new record, Never Odd or Even, via Repeating Cloud. Lead single ‘Skyscraper’ is our first glimpse, a song that combines jangly hooks with Replacements-style rock grit.

SIKADE – greedy heart

Oslo-based singer, songwriter, harpist and producer Linnea Vestre, aka SIKADE, has been releasing a steady stream of singles in recent times as she gears up for the release of her debut full-length. So far songs like ‘body of water‘ (“embodies the balance between intimacy and scale which marks the project”) and ‘eleven‘ (“the line between sensuality and symbolism dissolves […] pushing towards a lushness which is almost cinematic”) have raised the anticipation for the record, and latest single ‘greedy heart’ only furthers the excitement. An embodiment of both the yearning at the heart of the forthcoming album and the dreamy compassion with which Vestre brings it to life, and the ideal balm to the oppressive summer heat which has descended upon us.

Or perhaps not despite the clarity of the title, because while the thicket of feelings might be disorientating to experience, Brown maps this complexity with such precision and care that a sense of order starts to emerge. Meaning, as the album progresses, we follow her characters out of this tangle of interpersonal relations towards something enticingly close to lucidity, if not outright epiphany.

To ground this thematic arc, Izzy Oram Brown has shared two singles from the end of the record to hint at just where What I Want ends up. And, more than that, the songs also serve to demonstrate how this mission extends beyond the lyrics to the very sound itself. Multi-instrumentalist Jesse Bielenberg (Altopalo, Jesse in Grey, Dora Jar) and drummer Connor Parks (Cafune, Little Mystery, Tony Vaz) join to elevate the arrangements, and the fittingly layered and complex results align perfectly with the emotional weather through which Brown’s characters move. “Far from sounding like a typical indie-folk songwriter record,” Winston Cook-Wilson writes in the album notes, “What I Want is full of synth comet-streaks and fiery bits of unidentifiable sonic debris that function like musical evocations of both life’s unwelcome surprises and unprecedented wonders.”

First comes penultimate track ‘Love U the Same’, a warm, acoustic pop number which plays as though emerging from the other end of confusion within a relationship, not so much with specific answers for each and every problem but rather a kind of overarching meta-understanding. The hard won knowledge that love will always come loaded with knots and contradictions, and will likely never settle into anything close to perfection, but instead requires constant work. Closer ‘I Believe’ pushes the idea further. A track grander than its predecessor which takes this understanding and paints it in huge letters across the sky. A conclusion that feels almost defiant. “But I believe in the in between / And I believe in the starting clean,” as Brown sings in the song’s closing verse. “Well if that makes me wrong / So let it be.”

With the release of Orion/Mother fast approaching, Alex Zhang Hungtai has returned with another single. ‘American Burial’ takes inspiration from Tobe Hooper’s 1982 classic Poltergeist, both in terms of the film’s narrative and the wider circumstances of its filming. “[The movie is] about a white family moving into a newly purchased home but the house was haunted because it was built on ‘Indian burial ground’,” Zhang explains. “Trivia: the skeleton corpses that float up from the muddy waters were real corpses cuz it was cheaper to buy unclaimed bodies than to build from scratch multiple skeletons. Hollywood logic! The actors did not know it was real. But perhaps all of us come to this land to bury something, consciously or not. Buildings burn, people die, and new buildings are built over it as if nothing ever happened.”

The image is a fitting one for a release concerned with the ways the past exists within the present, fragments perpetually returning no matter how deep they have been interred beneath the earth. But while other artists might get caught up with this excavation, or else put their energies into covering over the skeletons before they make themselves at home in our lives, Alex Zhang Hungtai aims to do something different. Welcome the past into the present, but not without purpose. Because that which has gone can be broken down and repurposed. From the scraps of the past, a new life might rise.

Set for release later this month via Window Sill Records, with a cassette edition by Aural Canyon, Seasons Turn Like Pages is a brand new album which sees Principato continue to test the boundaries of the Saapato project. As the title suggests, the record is concerned with passage of time, each of its tracks representing a snapshot of a specific period taken over a year within a forest. Experienced as a whole, the result serves as a chronicle not only of a specific time and place, but also the change and constancy which marks the annual cycle within the natural world. Lead single and opener ‘Willow’ kicks things off, not only introducing the overall tone of the release but also going some way to prepare the listener so they might experience it properly. A song written from the perspective of a dreaming dog, Willow. “Willow is a Great Pyrenees which means she’s constantly on guard, looking to protect her herd (me) from danger,” Principato explains:

When she falls asleep at night she looks like she’s dreaming so deeply, so at peace and relaxed to be off the clock. In her dream, I imagine her running through a wildflower meadow watching Canada geese pass by overhead. Observing Willow on guard when she really doesn’t have to be has led me to realize all of the ways that I am metaphorically “on guard” in my own life, and in response has helped me to try and be more like the dreaming version of Willow. It’s a song about a dog dream and at the same time about reminding myself to step back and enjoy the dream.

Having recently signed to Nils Frahm‘s LEITER imprint, New York-based saxophonist and composer Alden Hellmuth has announced new full-length Tether. The album builds upon 2024’s punk-inflected jazz record Good Intentions to explore the creative potential of an ensemble embracing the tension between composition and improvisation. Tether is a fitting name for the release, speaking to both the connection between Hellmuth and her supporting cast—bassists Logan Kane and Miller Wrenn and drummer Justin Brown (Thundercat, Aja Monet)—and how group, and indeed the audience, act something like a leash within the spontaneity of improvisation. The musicians might play themselves out into unexpected territory, but there’s always a line to bring them back into the heart of the group. Lead single ‘Face The Wall’ is available now, and shows just how raucous and visionary the Alden Hellmuth sound can be.

Alice Bradley – Seismic

Per her bio, Asheville-based songwriter Alice Bradley “sees songwriting a way to grow words past the point of logic into catharsis,” and latest EP Seismic certainly lives up to this intention. Take the title track, woven from a layered, almost meditative arrangement of fingerpicked guitar, though one always led forwards by the underlying groove. The style is matched by Bradley’s vocals, both in tone and substance, the rhythmic ease of her delivery belying the difficult grapple presented in the lyrics. “There’s a face looking back / and a face looking forward / the space between that / i gotta move toward,” as she sings. “And the waves want to crash / to talk with the shore / future and past / converse at the door.” But by the close, something of a slow epiphany seems to have occurred. The acknowledgement that perhaps words aren’t best suited to pick at such complicated knots, and instead it is best to lean into the flow.

Atta Boy – Oh, Mama

Since their inception back in 2012, LA-based indie pop outfit Atta Boy have amassed a following with a sound that’s bright, sometimes whimsical and always compassionate, driven by a sense of curiosity shared by core members Dashel Thompson (piano), Eden Brolin (vocals), Freddy Reish (guitar), and Lewis Pullman (drums). The band are preparing to release their new album Lilt this June, and new single ‘Oh, Mama’ embodies the spirit of their work. A song which holds up the unique force that is motherly love as something as organic and ever-present as the natural world itself. “When I was growing up (and still today) my mom was so amazing at inspiring a sense of wonder at our natural world,” Brolin explains. “She is intensely nurturing and there for me, no matter what. I could say a billion things about why I think my mom is the shit, but as far as the song goes, I just wanted to paint a picture of how grand I see her love and her motherhood. This idea can be applied to anyone whose support feels like relief and respite when life is sideways. Brenna Bruce – Something Gold

Brenna Bruce “brings to life a serene sound shadowed by a certain mournfulness,” we wrote of the Seattle-based songwriter when covering her 2024 EP Honest Bloom, “evoking the way even the most tranquil environment is in some way made poignant by the latent promise of its own end.” The release, put out via Ghost Mountain Records, placed emotional states within the context of the larger cycles of the natural world, and came to find beauty within an embrace of transience. Now Bruce is preparing to release Light Catcher, a brand new EP no less ambitious or emotionally astute, and latest single ‘Something Gold’ hints at what to expect. The song asks whether mourning is a strange form of alchemy, charting how moving through the end of a relationship can so often elevate the mundane into something precious, at least in one’s memories. Although, whether this process is legitimately capable of creating treasured material is open to interpretation. Every alchemist is shadowed by the possibility of their folly, coming to see (or wish for) cherished things which cannot, and never will, exist.

Darren Hayman – Hotter Than Mojave in My Heart (Iris DeMent cover)

Way back in 2008, Darren Hayman (Hefner / New Starts), Dan May (Owl & Mouse / Field Glass), David Watkins and David Tattersall (The Wave Pictures) released a self-titled bluegrass album under the name Hayman, Watkins, Trout And Lee, winning acclaim with a mixture of originals and rearrangements of songs from the likes of Townes Van Zandt and The Mountain Goats. Now Hayman is re-releasing the album and has provided two new covers in support, including a take on Iris DeMent‘s ‘Hotter Than Mojave in My Heart’. Leaning into the playful side of the original, the song not only offers solid evidence for diving back into Hayman, Watkins, Trout And Lee, it also hints at the depth of Hayman’s back catalogue, which has remained more or less missing despite his position as one of the most creative and distinctive voices in UK music.

Fox Run Sounds – Shake a Shoe

“But I don’t think you’re hearing me / I don’t think you’re hearing me / If I don’t feel you here with me.” So sings Fox Run Sounds on ‘Shake a Shoe’, a short verse indicative of the mood and tone of the new track. The project’s previous EP Yuh, O! probed at the tension between interior feelings and exterior appearances, utilising a bright sound to explore dark themes so that the form mirrored the duality of the content, and the new single is no less thoughtful in execution. More downbeat on the surface yet leavened by the hope that’s inherent within any sense of longing, the track ebbs and flows between hushed despondency and naked yearning, that latter marked by a lift in the instrumentation as though towards some promised epiphany. The enlightenment might never quite be granted, but the very act of continually reaching towards it seems to hold some wisdom of its own.

The Hobknobs – Easier Listening

“Helmets Off can be described as an honest attempt at honesty.” So describes the press release for the debut album of The Hobknobs, a new project featuring Arie van Vliet (Lewsberg) and Yaël Dekker (The Klittens), though anyone expecting something earnest and sentimental will quickly find they have misunderstood. Because the honesty of The Hobknobs is something purer than the usual meaning of the word. Purer and therefore stranger. Honesty as delivered by a pair of songwriters who aren’t overly convinced by the goodness of humanity or even the meaning of language. Lead single ‘Easier Listening’ might be the poppiest track on the album, and on the surface gestures towards a nostalgic sort of twee, but is in fact very much its own animal. “’Easier Listening’ is about people who consciously choose to be less intelligent, in order to be able to understand so much more” Dekker explains. People who are faithful yet have no faith, enlightened and underestimated, presented here without judgement. Should we surrender and join their ranks?

The Huntress and Holder of Hands – Doctrine

Rising from the ashes of folk duo Brown Bird after the death of creative partner and husband Dave Lamb, MorganEve Swain’s The Huntress and Holder of Hands is both a vehicle to explore grief in its full spectrum of emotions and a way to continue the spirit of its predecessor. The result is a sound that holds space for anger, confusion, sadness and compassion, as well as an inherent sense of hope that’s built into the very fact of its existence. Set for release next month, new album Babylon is the perfect example of this nuanced style, confronting the corrupt and violent present without forgetting ideas of redemption and sanctuary too. Single ‘Doctrine’ was written in 2017 but is more relevant than ever, a taut and haunting slice of country rock which simmers with fury even it is quietest moments. “Honestly I was hoping it would be obsolete by now,” Swain explains, “but instead these words now feel like an incantation we need more than ever.”

Newcastle upon Tyne duo lots of hands (that’s Billy Woodhouse and Elliot Dryden) last released new music at the beginning of 2025 with Fire Talk debut into a pretty room. Since then, the band have gone from strength to strength, finding lots of new fans and going on tour across the US in support of Lala Lala. Now they are back with a new single ‘grapevine’, a song which harks back to their nostalgia-laced lo-fi roots with a stark, stripped-back atmosphere. It’s dark and shadowy, squealing guitar and repetitive loops undulating over electronic percussion, Woodhouse and Dryden both contributing soft, understated vocals that deliver lyrics both opaque and suggestive. “Oh I feel it pulling me away, some sort of magnetic wave,” Woodhouse sings, “I’m finding myself upstate.”

Scott C Park – Marlene

Last year, Stornoway-based songwriter Scott C Park released his debut album Crossing The Line, establishing a rich and introspective brand of folk rock able to probe deep into the uncertainties of young adult life. Not one to rest on his laurels, Park is preparing another full-length for later this year, and has unveiled lead single ‘Marlene’ to whet appetites in the meantime. A track which again possesses the authenticity of its predecessor, pairing an almost twee level of sincerity with a rougher edge, resulting in something heartfelt but never cloying. This is achieved in no small part via the wry humour which runs through its heart, a feature which ultimately grants an affirming conclusion. “The song spends a whole lot of time where the protagonist is like, ‘Woe is me’… his world is kind of grey and drab,” Park explains. “And then in the last half he just rips the piss out of himself for being such a depressed guy.”

After previous singles ‘Je Nes Sais Pas’ (a track of bright energy and fading dreams, not to mention a trademark wit and humour”) and ‘Dark Out’ (“has all the idiosyncratic style which has won the New York outfit such a following, managing to maintain a toe-tapping brightness despite the desperation and soul bubbling beneath the surface”), Frog have now shared latest single ‘Best Buy’ to mark the release of Frog For Sale via Audio Antihero. The song is typical of the release, pairing a sound that’s sunny and playful with lyrics that possess a darker edge, spiralling into the male psyche and its attempts to appear not bothered by things which clearly bother it.

The result is a languid calm that strains against something more desperate, Bateman’s vocals sounding as though they’re fighting to maintain their wry humour and cool attitude. It’s unclear whether the protagonist is pathetic, creepy, dangerous or none of those things, merely following a normal daydream in his head. “Well I thought about you on the way to work and it occurred to me I want you to know,” as he sings in the opening. “I know it always hurts when I’m a jerk when I’m at work what am I doing it for / I’ve resolved to try and find a way inside of your vagina and to that end I’m sorta tryna get you alone.”

Such a style is typical of Gravity Blanket, the record seeing Stephen Becker dig through the assorted fragments of ordinary life in search of some lesson or sense of higher meaning, even if it requires him to unearth some uncomfortable things in the process. The songs lead from childhood through adolescence and young adult life, featuring everything from Slinkys and Haribo frogs to break-ups and hallucinations, though Becker’s inventive lyricism and arrangements maintain both playfulness and vulnerability across them all.

Sitting at the louder, slightly more disordered end of the spectrum, latest single ‘Careless’ again focuses on a failing relationship, though is more ambiguous than its predecessor. Because while ‘Bad Idea’ existed within the moment an end became clear cut, ‘Careless’ instead focuses on the uncertainty which worms its way the cracks of struggling partnership. “I was stuck on the word ‘careless’, and how adding a space flips its meaning entirely,” Becker expands. “In relationships, it’s hard to know whether someone’s just being careless (silly, impersonal) or if they actually care less (harsh). I tried to capture that ambiguity with a wily post-chorus guitar riff in the vein of Jonny Greenwood and Ed Rodriguez.”
