We’ve introduced The Secret Ingredient Is Even More Meat by The Noisy gradually over recent weeks, each new single expanding the scope and personality of a record committed to concepts of experimentation, personal freedom and fluidity. A deluxe edition of the project’s debut album The Secret Ingredient is More Meat, the record casts a wide net for its inspiration, drawing on a whole range of cinematic and literary influences as well as the ideas which underpin and support the drag and queer communities.

The result is inherently personal yet larger than any one life, lead Sara Mae Henke evoking the true dimensions of their interior with songs that can be televisually glitzy (‘Twos‘) or as intimate as a home movie (‘Grenadine‘), and moreover songs unafraid to delve into the most individual of subjects in order to locate more universal truths (as with ‘Nightshade‘ and its examination of difficult relationships). The superstitious ‘Ballerino’ and its Suspiria-inspired video by Ewan Hill collect all of these ideas together into under two minutes, celebrating all sides of an identity while working through memories and learning to love the past while focusing on what is to come.

The Secret Ingredient Is Even More Meat by The Noisy

With a focus on costume, bodies and performance, not to mention a clear taste for horror movies, we thought The Noisy would make for the ideal people to create a digital mixtape of songs to soundtrack your Halloween. Sara Mae kindly obliged, so read on below to get your fill of everything camp and creepy.

‘Picture You’ by Chappell Roan

“Draw the blinds / light every candle…” Okay we’re getting ready for the blood ritual… “It’s ritualistic / counting lipstick stains where you should be…” Chappell has said this is a peek into her alternate life as an indie rock singer. I think it’s so hot and also scary!!! I love the idea of getting to see so many different sides of an artist you love, that this is sort of her Jekyll / Hyde song…

I got to go see Chappell this week for the Damsels & Other Dangerous Things tour, and it was a good reminder of why I make the music I make. Japanese Breakfast was opening for her, and those two divas are quite literally my two favorite artists of all time. It was so emotional for me seeing them so happy, and for all of my time I spend emulating their work, it was also really cool at this moment in my life as a musician to see them enjoying what they do.

‘Friend’ by Trace Mountains

Speaking of Japanese Breakfast, this record was produced by Jbrekkie drummer, and Philly icon, Craig Hendricks. I love the practical effects in the music video, and the production throughout has a real kinship with Jubilee–less guitar-driven and more airy and synthy. Enjoy this wolfy music video

‘Happy’ by Mitski

Besides this song being emotionally gutting and so musically beautiful, it is incredible horror writing. I love how she personifies Happy as an ominous, eerie he/him. A masterclass in lyric writing and storytelling and translating music to a surprising narrative in a music video. There is so much real true dread in the production, that by the time the brass comes in, it’s jarring and sort of out-of-place in its brightness. Brilliant.

‘Half to Death’ by Magana

Mitski’s bassist Magana is my labelmate! This song is somewhere between dread and whimsy, and the production reminds me of “Happy” but also of New York band The Cradle, who I think of as cold weather music. It’s smart and wistful and you can listen to it while you look up at the gray sky and see your breath leave you, just when it’s getting dark enough for the trick or treaters to come out. They sing “I hear you sleep; I’m still drowning in dread.” We’re studying all the affects of scary-ness on this playlist!! We’ve got horror, dread, camp, and…

Bad News by Magana

‘Incinerator’ by Daniel Sohn

“It’s an embarrassment I’m taking care of it it’s my favorite technique for rainy days and losing sleep just take the lighter off the shelf and set a fire to yourself incinerator” Embarrassment! Terror! Daniel is my bandmate and I’m always humbled when I listen to his music. I got to sing backup for him this year and this was my favorite one to learn. Some really fun parts on piano and I always appreciate how seriously he takes harmonies. I learn so much from him!

(In lieu of Nick Drake’s “Pink Moon” which to me is an autumn necessity, listen to Daniel’s “Alkali Moon.”)

Soft Surroundings 802 by Daniel Sohn

‘Allston’ by Twin Princess

I feel like this is a missing song from the Knife + Heart soundtrack. Twin Princess frontperson Pauli is also a Philly musician and she’s got such a beautiful and haunting voice. She’s also a stunning frontperson and with her white blonde hair could absolutely be a compelling Bride of Frankenstein. As a sidebar in my personal music history, Allston is a neighborhood in Boston where all the DIY happens, and where I saw a lot of my own early punk shows!!

‘Louise’ by Tuft

I knew the singer when I lived in Boston, (we worked next door to each other in Porter Square!) and my friend Zenaida and I became obsessed with this EP they put out. I inevitably visit Zenaida every fall when the leaves are changing, and this remains our road trip music across Massachusetts. “Guide me through the dimlit alley / cracked glass and crystal honey” They’re singing to the late poet Louise Glück. What’s more, sit in a graveyard reading Poe, type of Halloween than that?

‘Get Disowned’ by Hop Along

I fell in love with this album in the fall of my senior year of high school so it’s a lot of good nostalgia for me, and I associate it with the seasons changing and getting colder. I think some of the wishing on hurtling stars and genuine dysphoria of this song, “Meteor, make me young, make me young” brings another affect of scary-ness to the playlist!

‘Lace Up’ by Wax Jaw

I got to model for this album art Something to listen to as you put your costume on and get ready to get out to the big party at the old haunted manor!

It Takes Guts! by Wax Jaw

Honorable Mentions

‘Love That Burns’ by Fleetwood Mac
‘Unholy’ by Kim Petras
‘Our Way to Fall’ Yo La Tengo

So there you have it. A veritable bounty of spooky tracks to soundtrack any festivities over the coming weeks. Though we do have one more song to mention. Because while Sara Mae might be too polite and humble to include one of their own tracks among this digital mix, no Halloween playlist can be complete this year without The Noisy’s ‘Twos’. A narrative driven number which adds glamourous pop and sludgy rock into its cauldron and stirs everything up. Sam Cush further brings the story to life with a fantastic video. What Henke describes as “Buffy the Vampire Slayer meets Grey Gardens meets two dates to the prom.”

Below are sixty of the tracks that stood out alongside our pick of the best lines and lyrics. Or perhaps read the entire thing as some experimental poem.

And the usual disclaimer applies, there were too many great tunes to include them all, so treat this more as a selection rather than a comprehensive round-up of the year. Enjoy.

One of the best/worst things about the whole blogging game is the abundance of great music. Unfortunately there are (still!) only twenty-four hours in a day, most of which are consumed with non-WTD things, so even if we get sent ten great albums then chances are we will only be able to cover three or four. While trying to avoid falling into the listicle trap, we thought the best way to remedy this problem would be a semi-regular round-up, ‘Best of the Rest’, where we include all the songs we think you should hear but don’t quite have the time to tell you why. Inclusion here is no comment on quality – this isn’t a runner-up prize!

Roddy Hart & The Lonesome Fire – Violet

Glasgow’s Roddy Hart & The Lonesome Fire are back with a new single, ‘Violet’, a track which blends delicate melancholy with a human warmth in a way reminiscent of The National. The song is taken from their forthcoming album, Swithering, which you can pre-order right now.

Winter Villains – We’re Stuck With The Beauty

Taken from the Cardiff band’s sophomore album Once there were sparks, now there are ashes, ‘We’re Stuck with the Beauty’ is a strange, orchestral chamber pop song both striking and beautiful. A certain oddness underpins both the sound and the lyrics, a sense that the world is not quite as it seems, the angles not quite logical, the imagery shot through with an obscure sense of meaning.

dné – Meeting Points at 2AM

The recording project of Czech Republic’s Ondrej Holy, dné is a neo-classical project born not of formal training but an innate musicality, drawing upon piano, strings and vocals as well as lush field recordings and other sampling techniques. The result is new album These Semi Feelings, They Are Everywhere, a critique of “today’s world of Internet driven hyper-realities, superficial connections and the increasing elusiveness of romance and relationships”, though as ‘Meeting Points at 2AM’ shows, there is hope and light aplenty. The album is out via Majestic Casual Records.

Mitski – ‘Your Best American Girl’ live on Colbert

We wrote a preview post about Puberty 2 and ‘Your Best American Girl’ back in , and while we’d planned to give the album the full review it deserved, it was difficult to find the time and space to write something interesting about Mitski that hasn’t already been said. So, in the likely event that the review never appears, here’s a spellbinding live session from Colbert to remind you that Mitski is special.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HkvE_0k_2q0

Luke De-Sciscio – Stanton Park

Luke De-Sciscio describes his latest album Gossamer Rose as one about “growing to the point you can face yourself candidly – about recognising your flaws and intricacies such that you can contribute to this journey through life in the most positive way… it’s a record about eye contact.” This idea shines through on ‘Stanton Park’, a suitably intimate folk song where every imperfection only reinforces the sense of authenticity, drawing on the likes of JBM and adding warmth and nostalgic poetry.

Hypocrite in a Hippy Crypt – New Friend

San Diego’s Hypocrite in a Hippy Crypt are soon to release a new 6″ lathe-cut single with Brooklyn’s Already Dead Tapes and Records, ‘New Friend’ sounds sunny and gentle, with strummed acoustic guitar and warm choral vocals. With the cartoony, wish-you-were-here style novelty postcard artwork, it’s a welcome relief from the frosty mornings and biting north wind. Pre-order the single now from Bandcamp, and get bonus download codes for four (!) Hypocrite in a Hippy Crypt albums.

Jordan Burchel – Why They Call You Blue

Gainesville, Florida resident Jordan Burchel makes electrically and emotionally charged indie rock that’s infused with a sense of mass and negative space. He’s soon to release his sophomore album, Vowel Sounds, and has recently unveiled a single, ‘Why They Call You Blue’. The song is the perfect introduction to Burchel’s sound and has certainly whet our appetite for the LP. Be sure to keep an eye on his website ahead of release in December.

Century of Ecstasy – Bus

The recording project Stockholm’s Joakim Persson, Century of Ecstasy produces sparse, lonely songs with nothing more complicated than an acoustic guitar and piano. Taken from his latest EP, I’m Leaving, Who Cares?, ‘Bus’ is a lesson in insular music, sounding like a late-night lament as heard from an empty room, so reflective and melancholic that it comes off almost as a ghost story, or rather a story from a ghost.

Skinny Blonde – Hi Annie

New York’s Skinny Blonde blend power pop and garage rock together with wry humour and deadpan vocals to tell stories of wasted youth, coming off like BOAT might have sounded in their high school years. ‘Hi Annie’ is the perfect introduction, the tale of a introverted, peace-loving admirer following their beloved, party-going Annie from a distance, thinking that their differences need not get in the way of romantic love (“I can wait in the car Annie, and you can have a real good time / you and me could go far Annie, I can push on through and I don’t mind / Lord knows I’ve got the time, Annie”). The song is taken from their new album, Precious Cargo, that you can get from Bandcamp.

David Stone – Sound of a Spark

David Stone is a songwriter from Ontario who recently wrote and recorded ‘Sound of a Spark’, a song about his great uncle Sid, a belly gunner in the Second World War. While the whole Remembrance Day thing has become a bit of a commodity, today of all days we should remember the human side of war, and this song does just that.

So if you’re even half aware of the happenings in whatever you call this music scene we love, you’ll probably already know that Mitski Miyawaki, AKA Mitski, has announced a new album, Puberty 2. To be released this June, the record follows 2014’s Bury Me at Makeout Creek, a supremely human record which refused to settle into any simple mood or message, shape-shifting the moment you thought you’d seen the true centre. As we described:

“Maybe centre is nothing, a blank canvas across which the fleeting emotions dance and die and rise again. Maybe we are just whatever we’re feeling at any given moment. Maybe.”

So far there is only one song available from the new record, though it certainly does not disappoint. ‘Your Best American Girl’ is trademark Mitski, facing up to huge social issues in her humane way. Imagine a tiny person standing in front of a motorcade of loud, tank-like SUVs decorated with flashing lights and star-spangled banners. The person has two options: Either 1) she gets into one of the vehicles and becomes part of the parade (they unlock from the inside, but someone will let her in) or she stands her ground and risks never having such an opportunity again. The song finds her in the middle of the road, not flinching or even blinking, but as is to be expected, she’s swallowing nervously.

The video, directed by Zia Anger and produced by Rachel Wolther, pulls no punches with regard to the themes, the Coachella-ready, culturally appropriating white couple becoming increasingly intimate/obscene, screaming for attention, all the while draped in the stars and stripes.

“Your mother wouldn’t approve
Of how my mother raised me
But I do, I think I do
And you’re an all-American boy
I guess I couldn’t help
Try to be
Your best American girl.”

The album will be released on the 17th June via Dead Oceans, so head on over to the Puberty 2 Pledge Music page and choose the option you desire. In support, Mitski will be hitting the road this summer with Jay Som and Japanese Breakfast for an extensive North America tour. Those of you state side can find all the dates below:

In support of Quiet, Constant Friends, our music and literature project in aid of the global literacy charity Worldreader, we came up with Lit Links, a recurring feature where we ask musicians and music writers to create playlists that are somehow related to a book of their choice.

Today we are delighted to share a piece by Shana Hartzel, one half of the excellent, Philly-based music blog Swell Tone. If you are unfamiliar with the site, Hartzel and her partner in crime Victoria surf the high seas of new music and write about the best of it, with well-written reviews, cool sessions, innovative (and often pizza-based) guest appearances and regular mixtapes full of unearthed gems. Basically, it offers everything a music blog should.

As if that wasn’t enough, Shana also writes for The Wild Honey Pie, and is the assistant director of Philadelphia’s Y-Not Radio, and hosts the show ‘Aussie Unlocked’ on 2nd Fridays, 9-10pm (or you can find them on-demand via Mixcloud).

Jane Austen’s Mansfield Park
by Shana Hartzel

Though I’ve never been the most dedicated reader, my adoration for Jane Austen hasn’t waned since my first required reading of Pride and Prejudice. The English novelist’s romantic yet satirical fiction is an ideal match for my constantly shifting mental stream of humor and enchantment. It is a rare literary love that, at its peak, led to a full day of my life being dedicated to baking scones and lemon tarts, wearing frilly dresses, and plowing through the film adaptations of her three biggest novels in the company of a large pot of tea and my equally nerdy best friend.

There is something especially intriguing about Mansfield Park. Austen’s third novel is arguably her strongest exploration into the cloudy dichotomies of the British middle class and her most controversial work. Amongst an examination of the period’s morals and privileges and a slew of amorous entanglements, the story centers around the life of Fanny Price. Fanny is relocated at age ten from her markedly poor family to live with her wealthy relatives at Mansfield Park where she becomes a tiresome burden to everyone but her cousin Edmund.

Thanks to Edmund’s kindness, Fanny survives through an upbringing of monetary privilege and emotional abuse to become the most morally centered resident of the estate. As a character, Fanny isn’t nearly as agreeable or as openly charming as Austen’s other protagonists. Her emotional fragility appropriately reflects her constant treatment as an inferior. Yet, she always manages to imperfectly persevere through matters of affairs, slavery, debauchery, and consanguineous relationships. Seemingly unaffected by normal rules of decorum, her free will and clarity of thinking are always her best defense against the surrounding negativity. In the many ways it both defines and guides her, Fanny’s sincere approach to life is what has always drawn me back to this story in particular.

While the book itself portrays music as a skill that elevates character or a means by which affections are exchanged through dance, I have aimed to take a more modern musical approach to the grandeur and societal confines of Mansfield Park. Below, you’ll find an assortment of songs that challenge structural and melodic conventions in the way that Austen’s characters grapple with the expectations of their environment and upbringing. The sonic mix paints the spirit of the novel’s colorfully quaint world in stokes of humble grace, fearsome defiance, and (of course) irrevocable declarations of love.

If you have been reading Wake The Deaf on anything like a regular basis then you are probably familiar with Dan Knishkowy’s Adeline Hotel by now. We reviewed his début album Leave The Lights, calling it “equally adept at sparse folk… as with folk rock”, before premièring ‘Red Coat’, a track from his new EP, How Strange It Is To See. In our recent review of the EP, we praised Knishkowy’s writing and noted how the songs were shaped by the recording process, where he moved out of New York to Pittsburgh.

“[How Strange It Is To See] exists within that small and fleeting pocket in time and space that opens just before you take off from a familiar location, everyday objects taking on new importance as the seconds tick away and your surroundings can be seen outside of the context of your own unimportant worries and wishes”

It was a release that left me with questions, and Knishkowy very kindly agreed to answer a few of them.

Hi Dan, thanks for speaking to us! Congratulations on the release of How Strange It Is To See. I saw you played a release show in a winery?

Thanks! Yeah, a solo show in Pittsburgh, where I recorded these songs. Then we’re doing a full band thing in Brooklyn this week (with Wake the Deaf fav, Ben Seretan).

As I mentioned in my review, the EP was created in the midst of a move, written in one city and recorded in another. Did you intend to write the songs as a direct reaction to the relocation? Or did you just find your life coloured your writing?

There wasn’t much intention at first. I’d been writing songs for a new record, and like most people I know, had developed a love/hate thing with New York. It felt like a good time to try somewhere new for a bit. I was messing around with ‘Everything Is Going To Be Fine’ and the other 3 came out very stream of consciousness. That’s rare for me and I wanted to capture them on record the same way. Quickly and immediately. They’re all in the same key and feel more like one song written from four narrators’ perspectives, so it felt right to put them together in a concise format. To be honest, it’s a bit weird listening now, especially being back in NY, because they are of a very specific moment.

What would you list as the main influences on your writing? Would you say other musicians have had the biggest impact? Have novels/poetry played a role too?

Writing, definitely Jeff Tweedy….people like Neil Young, Elliott Smith, Jason Molina who have this duality of solo acoustic and blown out rock band. On guitar, British folkies like Bert Jansch and John Martyn. Lyrically, Chris Porterfield [of Field Report] is in another world; he completely changed the game for me in terms of what I thought I wanted out of songs.

Honestly, I struggle to break out of familiar points of view, so literature hasn’t found it’s way into the songs yet, but it helps my approach to writing – stuff like Flannery O’Connor, Borges, Murakami, where the seriousness is propped up by an absurdist element. The more fucked up the funnier it is. With music, I just always take shit too seriously. Something to work on.Coming from a background strictly in the written word, I’m always fascinated by songwriting. Having to marry the two strands of music and lyrics from scratch seems like such a difficult task from the outside. How do you go about it? Do you fit the music around the lyrics or vice versa? Or is it some middle ground that only a musician could understand?

Hah, well I’m fascinated by your writing — I feel like we get to cheat because a good melody can pull the weight when the words don’t and vice versa, but every line you write has to stand on it’s own.

Most things start for me on the guitar, but I keep notebooks and iPhone notes to draw from for when that happens. I trade lyrics from song to song a lot, though not always on purpose.

Some of your songs seem pared down to the bare minimum (I’m think of ‘Left on Jewel’ in particular), with a pretty clear narrative condensed into a few short, poetic verses. Do the extended versions of these stories exist in your head, and you distil them to fit into a song? Or do you choose words and imagery more instinctively, allowing the stories to emerge, for you as well as the listener?

I’ve been making a conscious effort to write more concisely. Restraint is such a beautiful thing, but not one of my strengths at all. I usually overwrite (like seven verses for a three verse song) and then edit down. Sometimes the best lyrics aren’t really part of the story and need to be left out, which is a bummer.

I see you are releasing a run of cassettes with Lily Tapes & Discs, who we have covered a few times in various guises. How did this come about? I’m almost completely ignorant when it comes to this sort of thing – did you approach the label? Did they come to you?

Ben Lovell, who runs Lily, is actually an old childhood friend. He taught me about Elephant 6 when we were 12 and I probably returned the favor with something like Through Being Cool. We’d been out of touch for years but started seeing each other at shows in NY and the timing worked out. His own music as Lung Cycles is so great too.

Why did you decide on tapes rather than CD or vinyl? It’s something I’ve thought about a lot recently – if physical releases aren’t the primary method of listening anymore, have they become strictly aesthetic things, nice things to put on a shelf?

I do most of my listening digitally (no streaming, just the old iPod classic), but I buy vinyl at shows. There’s still a level of independent music that’s healthy enough to sell records and make a sustainable income, but for everyone below that level (musicians and labels) it’s become about just connecting with people. There’s been a shift towards limited edition releases, tapes, lathe cuts, etc. which I think is fantastic. With digital music beginning to feel valueless, giving someone a lovingly handmade artefact puts personal value back into that relationship, even if they only play the songs via the download. I love collaboration, so with Ben and Lily that means tapes. He did the art and I think it’s beautiful.

Finally, could you name 4-5 acts you are currently enjoying? Old or new, popular or obscure, whatever you find yourself returning to.

Adrianne Lenker’s a-sides is an everyday listen; The Weather Station, especially last year’s EP; so much Mitski; Will Stratton’s ‘The Relatively Fair‘; Evan Dando’s Baby I’m Bored. I’m biased because I play in her band sometimes, but Johanna Samuels is truly one of the best songwriters around.

Ought

Canadian rockers Ought have a new album coming very soon on Constellation Records.

Don DeLillo

“Don DeLillo is a hero of mine. The finest writer of our times… ” – We made a playlist of songs to soundtrack DeLillo’s White Noise, together with some gushing words.

K. Adem

“If further evidence was needed, Beautiful Dreamer confirms Adem’s eclectic songwriting abilities” – Our thoughts on the latest release from K. Adem.

Oh Pep!

“What should perhaps be labelled multi-instrumental indie pop, something akin to Sylan Esso meets Vampire Weekend” – We previewed the upcoming EP from Oh Pep! with some words about first song ‘The Race’

Sorority Noise

“Teenage, I’m-so-misunderstood melancholy is doubly effective, providing a sense of connection to anyone unlucky enough to find themselves in the throes of an adolescent heartbreak, while proving immensely gratifying to everyone else in the way that manufactured grief is always gratifying – a distracting and digestible simulacrum of suffering, a romantic and wistful removed-from-Real-Life pain, like watching an episode of The OC with your name in the main credits. But the thing is, anyone listening closely will soon discover that Sorority Noise are different…” – we explained why Sorority Noise are more than just another emo band

Typhoon

“Let it be known, the stripped back, piano led performance of ‘Prosthetic Love’ is gorgeous” – Typhoon put out a seven-inch featuring some lovely alternate versions of songs from White Lighter

I mentioned Amelia Gray’s début novel Threats in my review of Young Jesus’s excellent Grow / Decompose, drawing parallels in the way the characters dissociate from ‘normal’ behaviour and retreat into their own strange worlds. As I wrote of Threats:

“[David] descends the spirals of grief after losing his wife… With death and decay quite literally pervading his house and life, David finds himself both terrified by his situation yet drawn towards some obscure peace with it, as if giving in to a dark and fungal siren”

Amelia Gray is back with her third collection of short stories, Gutshot. As the title suggests, this is an uncomfortable book. Like, being-shot-square-in-the-guts level uncomfortable. There’s a man who vomits every time he speaks (and carries an empty pop bottle for convenience), mutual genital mutilation between a couple struggling to conceive a child, a family who carve up an over-sized heart with kitchen knives. There are giant snakes and desecrated graveyards and twins within twins. And yes, there is blood and shit and mucus in large quantities.

As in Threats, many of the characters in Gutshot seem aware of their situation but unable to change, as if passengers on a train called Life or Destiny which they understand will arrive at its destination regardless of anything they might do. These are people caught in a strange stases, pervaded by vague sensations they can see and feel but not avoid, sensations which eat away at their insides until they are hulled and hollow. Opener ‘In The Moment’ is a good example, a story where a couple eradicate all references of the past or future from their apartment, removing all context from their existence and thus making life at once fascinating and impossible. See also ‘Away From’, the tale of a kidnapped woman who freezes at the top of the stairs when trying to escape. Reading these stories is like watching a fungus bloom across a wall, like watching a slow-motion video of yourself going up in flames.

This feeling hangs over the majority of the stories, even those in which the characters are decisive. Even ‘The Labyrinth’, which sees a not-so-brave man decide to be brave teeters toward a cryptic ending, or rather ends cryptically before any real conclusion. This is typical Gray, never quite giving the reader that satisfying click of recognition, the realisation of where a story is going or what it means. Good people aren’t rewarded and bad people aren’t punished and even passages that first appear clear allegories or fables skew into confusion. In ‘The Labyrinth’, the narrator, Jim, is forced to carry an (heavy) enigmatic disk through the maze:

“I don’t know about this,” I said.

“It’s the Phiastos Disk,” Dale said. “I paid a pretty penny so mind where you set it.”

It did seem to be imbued with some significance.

And so Jim takes the disk into the labyrinth without ever understanding why. Gray’s grotesque imagery is much the same. It remains important, vital, to her work without serving any clear function (ie. any ham-fisted metaphorical purpose), as if its meaning is so large it’s impossible to focus on. ‘Year of the Snake’ is set up like a strange and ambiguous fairy tale that never narrows down to some moral principle, while ‘The Swan as Metaphor for Love’ begins like an amusing love-is-actually-terrible gag before subverting the subversion, delving so far into horrible, biological truths that you’re left with an existential consideration so primal it registers as a taste in the mouth.

I could go on: ‘Device,’ ‘These Are Fables’ and the title story all seem to tee up some valuable punchline without following through, highlighting something that makes Gray’s writing so special. By not giving answers, or sending explicit messages, she manages to create characters and situations which feel real despite their surreality. Whether they have a device which can predict the future, an unending compulsion to say thank you or a prostitute locked in the heating ducts of their home, each and every character is vividly, fatally, human.

To review the collection as a whole is a difficult job. The book reads like a carefully constructed chaos too nuanced to be unified into a clear theme. Occasionally an image or theme is amplified by what seems like inadvertent recurrence, while other times they clash messily leaving once-clear messages and morals adrift in ambiguity. This gives Gray’s design an decidedly organic feel, each piece, ignorant of the rest, fulfils its own role as if it is the most important thing in the world, creating a system of blind parts working furiously toward some obscure goal, and giving Fernando Vicente‘s artwork a whole new meaning.

Gutshot is out now, published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux.

Seeing as we are primarily a music website, we thought we’d included a playlist of songs to accompany each book review. The tracks aren’t necessarily directly related to the anything in the stories, but rather get close to the same sorts of imagery and moods. Enjoy.
