A song that she says “comes from acknowledging the type of magic that exists all around us and yearning to get a taste of it,” ‘rosemary’ is the new single from addy (the project led by Philadelphia’s Addy Watkins). Her first new music since last year’s temperance, the song takes indie pop and stripped-back folk and refracts them into a new shape entirely, something warm and fond and all-enveloping. “I was in love with a witch once,” Watkins describes of the song’s inspiration, “who taught me rosemary hung over my bed would help with my crippling nightmares. which it did and still does whenever I remember to hang it.”

Alice Hebborn – Saisons – Movement 2

December sees the release of Saisons, the debut album from Belgian composer Alice Hebborn on Western Vinyl. Created following a move to the countryside, the record draws inspiration from theories of ecofeminism and environmental harmony and presents a world cast volatile and disordered in the wake of human impacts. Across seven movements, built of piano and electronics, Hebborn imagines a different future. One in which humans cease to throw the natural balance and instead become a key link in a harmonious web of reciprocal relationships. Lead single ‘Movement 2’ is “the starting point of Saisons,” Hebborn describes. “It was written in the spring and draws its inspiration from the captivating images of this season: the awakening of nature and our senses, the great activity of all living things.”

Saisons by Alice Hebborn
Saisons will be released on 6th December via Western Vinyl.

Banti Buli – Hennessy Song

“Refusing to commit fully to irony or sincerity […] as though a song about relationships couldn’t really function without equal doses of heartfelt emotion and tongue-in-cheek humour.” So we wrote of Banti Buli‘s ‘Something Like a Honda Odyssey’ last year, a song which mixed languid rhythms with a distinctively verbose lyricism. Ahead of an album due next spring, Banti Gheneti is now back with ‘Hennessy Song’, a track which see the US-based Dutch-Oromo artist take samples from his surroundings to build an earnest soundscape exploring the transience of even the most steadfast habits. “The closest thing to a home (the Ethiopian corner store) becomes a hole in the ground and your lover leaves you,” as Gheneti says. “Even routines and promises are ephemeral.”

Hennessy Song by Banti Buli
‘Hennessy Song’ is out now and available via the Banti Buli Bandcamp page.

figure eight – 1999 (cherry)

A mainstay of the Bay Area scene, figure eight originated as the experimental noise project of duo Nash Rood and Abby Goeser, starting out with nothing but a distorted synthesizer and acoustic drum kit. However, on welcoming a number of additional members in recent years (including Nicholas Coleman on bass and Nicky Esparza on drums), the band has now evolved into something altogether more full-bodied. Take new single ‘1999 (cherry)’, a song with finds the outfit at their most boisterous and reserved within the same three minutes. The searing opening is indebted to hardcore, though the crushing momentum soon breaks into something almost delicate. These twin threads of lightness and weight weave across the track into what appears to be the spirit of this new version of figure eight—a band aware of the transcendent power available at both ends of the spectrum.

S/T by figure eight
figure eight is out now via Cherub Dream Records. Grab it now from Bandcamp.

His His – My Friend Wants to be a Freemason

We last featured Aidan Belo’s His His project almost exactly a year ago when we covered the single ‘Ford Econoline’, a song about life in a tour van that we said felt “like the sensation of returning home in your mind as you cruise down an unfamiliar stretch of highway in some faraway city.” The Toronto-based artist returns with a new EP, Good Gold, coming out next month, and has just released the final single ahead of the release. Informatively titled ‘My Friend Wants to be a Freemason’, it’s a track about a childhood friend who became obsessed with joining a masonic lodge. “The idea of joining this secret society consumed my friend, and for a couple of months it was all that he’d talk about,” as Belo describes. Musically the song follows a familiar His His formula, a gentle and folk-inflected indie pop song that wears an air of weary wistfulness like the grain in an old film photograph.

Good Gold is due to be released on 15th November via Victory Pool Records. You can pre-save it now on streaming services.

Kassie Krut – Reckless

Kassie Krut are wasting no time introducing themselves. “K / A / S / S / I / E / K / R / U / T / T / T / T,” goes the opening line of new single ‘Reckless’, a de facto theme song for the new project of Kasra Kurt, Eve Alpert (formerly of Palm) and Matt Anderegg (Mothers, Body Meat). The band have just signed to Fire Talk Records, and new single offers a glimpse at the core of the project. Something undoubtedly contemporary yet possessing a rawer dimension too, as though through the idiosyncratic art pop style comes an altogether more atavistic, primal energy. Directed by Guy Kozak, the video for the song was filmed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and offers a visual representation of the sound’s frantic playfulness.

Mark Trecka – Witch’s Hat (ft. Midwife & An Heap)

The work of Mark Trecka never sits still, the Chicago-born artist and activist utilising sound to explore a diverse set of styles and themes in a practice as inventive as it is ambitious. More recent work has turned towards post-punk as an avenue of exploration, and latest single ‘Witch’s Hat’ continues to plough that same furrow. Recorded between Paris and Colorado, the track is described as Trecka’s “Halloween song,” existing with the common ground between that which is haunting and beautiful. Midwife joins on backing vocals and An Heap on synths to further elevate the dynamic, the song moving from apparent minimalism into a gauzy atmosphere as though pushing through the layers of time itself.

Michael Younker – Bad News

Michael Younker is a Detroit-born, Brooklyn-based production designer who also makes rock & roll music that he says “melds lighthearted cynicism with unashamed big rock motifs.” He has just released his debut EP, Sweet Things, a four-song record that’s brash and chaotic and amped up with bratty energy. “Sonically & lyrically, Sweet Things feels like the kid who ate too much sugar, bounced off walls, and passed out on the floor,” Younker describes. “Music of obsession, excess, indulgence, and…consequences?” ‘Bad News’ is perhaps the best place to start, capturing the EP’s manic motion and carefree bravado. “I can’t make you love me,” Younker sings, before snottily trying his best anyway in the following line – “C’mon, give it a go!”

Sweet Things by Michael Younker
Sweet Things is out now and available via the Michael Younker Bandcamp page.

Old Man of the Woods – Ghost

“A visceral exploration of a villain’s arc, tracing her devolution from possession to obsession to dissolution.” So reads the album notes for Triptych I: Devolve, the latest release from Seattle-based project Old Man of the Woods. The first in a series of EPs, the three-song collection offers a self-described “goth ethereal mycelial” sound to chart a fall from grace in all of its tragedy, majesty and strange avenues of agency. Such as with single ‘Ghost’, where the central character moves from resentment to something closer to power with the realisation that the ability to haunt can represent its own form of control.

Triptych I: Devolve by Old Man of the Woods
Triptych I: Devolve is out now and available from Bandcamp.

Orchid Mantis – Dead Malls (feat. Cathedral Bells)

Following a collaboration with Sign Crushes Motorist earlier this year, not to mention several more singles in the meantime, Orchid Mantis (the recording project of Atlanta‘s Thomas Howard) has returned with a new single ‘Dead Malls’. This time featuring Orlando, Florida shoegazey bedroom pop act Cathedral Bells, the track uses imagery of an abandoned shopping mall to explore emotions altogether more personal. Where past hopes, once bright and shiny and full of promise, have withered on the vine, now little more than empty husks. But the atmosphere is not downbeat, rather wistful and hazy, looking back on old memories as though flickering warm and grainy from an old film projector.

The solo project of multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Andy Schiaffino, body / negative announced itself fully in 2020 with the majestic album, Fragments. Crafted from a blend of dream pop and shoegaze influences, the collection was either haunted by the past or else halfway set within it. Songs haunting and tormented and strange, though always possessing that alluring quality so unique to the most celestial of dreams.

With new album everett coming soon on Track Number Records, Schiaffino has shared the title track to hint at where the body / negative sound has gone since. Developed with a team of collaborators including Madeline Johnston (Midwife), Justin Maranga, Dawood Nadurath and others, the album was set to be recorded at Johnston’s New Mexico studio, though Schiaffino’s father subsequently fell ill and the album’s creation was fundamentally changed. Instead, everett was brought into being while Schiaffino cared for their father in the hospice, and inevitably the record bent towards themes of grief, love and remembrance. With vocals captured on telephone handset instead of a microphone, the sound takes on nostalgic, melancholic tone. An attempt at communication through planes of existence and accumulated time. Continuing the ideas first introduced on Fragments but charged with a newfound immediacy amid the direst of personal circumstances.

The title track might be the album’s closer, but it is the ideal introduction too. A hint at both its texture and depth, as well as the mournful yet fond atmosphere which results. Aided by the distinctive Midwife style, ‘everett’ sees body / negative reaching across seemingly impassable gaps to ensure the line between loved ones remains open, regardless of how distant they might come to seem.

The track also comes complete with a video directed by Ryan Betschart and Rachel Nakawatase which you can watch below:

We haven’t done the whole Year End List thing for a while, but last year decided to do a list of our favourite songs from 2020 that we failed to cover. It seemed like a good way to share some of the things we loved but for whatever reason didn’t write about, and was hopefully something more constructive than the arbitrary rankings of most Year End lists.

We decided to expand things slightly this year, giving ourselves a chance to write a little something about the albums we wanted to cover but never got the opportunity. Albums which meant something to us at various points through 2021. The list was still incomplete, of course, and we were left with a big list of great songs from great records we didn’t get a chance to mention.

So here are some songs we really enjoyed in 2021. We hope you enjoy them too.

Arooj Aftab – Mohabbat

A take on a piece by Hafeez Hoshiarpuri, Aftab’s multilayered masterpiece is suffused with the patience, sadness and meditative inner wandering of Sufi devotional poetry.

Anjimile – Stranger

As fragile as sandstone, tougher than rock, ‘Stranger’ packages a nuanced assessment of identity as a folk pop hit of which Sufjan would be proud.

Bea Troxel – Getting Where

An empowered anthem for the introverted, slowly circling towards a more truthful self.

Ben Seretan – Cicada Waves 1

Measured and patient piano embedded within an organic field recording, ‘Cicada Waves 1’ plays like a slow day passing in all its quiet details, all its hidden weight.

The Bird Calls – Ritual Crash

With satellites falling from the sky and the burning underworld breaking the surface, ‘Ritual Crash’ presented the most tender, intimate end of the world you were likely to hear in the year of our Lord 2021.

Bria – Buffalo Ballet

Travel to Abilene, TX with this take on John Cale’s “European version of the Old West,” from an EP of covers that both subverts and celebrates country music.

BRNDA – Perfect World

Stable job, accolades, friendly dogs and affirmation. “You’re in the perfect world and doing ok,” sings Leah Gage, voice flat and sardonic as the track eventually tips sideways and falls into an unhinged sax outro.

Canary Room – Lake Effect

Bittersweet folk captured in its best setting, supported by warm lo-fi textures and an ambient embrace of birdsong.

Carson McHone – Hawks Don’t Share

The lid peeled off artistic collaboration, showing the tug of war tension underneath, as well as the lingering regret that results.

Daniel Davies – Spies

On streets as dark and foreboding as this, the question isn’t whether you are paranoid, but whether you are paranoid enough.

Doran – Old Moon

A new song cut from ancient cloth, like a small scrap torn from the drape of the heavens and earth and old moon itself.

Dusted – Not Offering

“I have given up. I’ve given enough,” Brian Borcherdt sings on this tender lesson in regret and letting go. “I was so sure. So it goes, I am not anymore.”

Etran de L’Aïr – Toubouk Ine Chihoussay

A suitably joyous number from Agadez’s premier wedding band, drawing you into its infectious momentum.

Fog Lake – jitterbug

A typically aching and overcast pop song from the master of them.

Frances Chang – eros the love creator dividing chaos

Cosmic spoken word which finds universes within interiors, a daydream transportation away from these sorry lands.

Fust – The Last Days

A song for hard times made warm by the fundamental fondness gained only through shared suffering.

JOHN – A Military Alphabet (five eyes all blind) / Job’s Lament / First of the Last Glaciers / where we break how we shine (ROCKETS FOR MARY)

Some latent thing awoken by our way of living, rising in the name of revenge.

Heka – (a) wall

Anger simmered down to a velvety caramel, coating the tongue on a slow walk through nocturnal alleys.

Hilary Woods – I

One of Hilary Wood’s wordless hymns, to be sung in dark chapels deep underground.

illuminati hotties – Pool Hopping

Working on the logic that slowing down might equal admitting truths or figuring things out, ‘Pool Hopping’ grabs you by the hand and runs.

Indigo De Souza – Pretty Pictures

“I’m always trying to embody a balance between the existential weight and the overflowing sense of love I feel in the world,” Indigo De Souza explains, capturing the bummed-out brightness better than we ever could.

Johanna Samuels – Sonny

With its long shadows and golden light, it’s not clear whether the sun is dawning or setting on ‘Sonny’, but it heralds a new day nonetheless.

JOHN (TIMESTWO) – Return to Capital / Šibensko Powerhouse

The reek of ozone as thunderheads slowly gather / The unleashing of the storm. “I see an opening in the sky, high, wide.”

Keith Secola – Intaglio

Just one of the portals on Keith Secola’s latest record. Looking to the heavens, rooted to the ground, tied to everything in between.

Lael Neale – Blue Vein

“Guardian angel / Gather my losses / Keep them all safe / ‘Til I come to my cross”

Le Ren – Dyan

As warm as a mother’s hand, with all the clarity of an empty room.

Lewsberg – The Corner

Perfectly minimal, just guitar, percussion, and incense-scented violin. All backed up by monologue-like vocals that ring with pure patience.

Loretta’s Museum – The Rodney Ave Garage Sale

Instrumental folk and the ambient sounds of a garage sale combine to evoke one of those perfect glittery springtime days when the sky is blue and the leaves are green and the sun isn’t yet too hot to bear.

Lucie, Too – スーパームーン Super moon

A slice of big, radio-ready indie pop from a Japanese duo that seem destined to blow up.

Mal Devisa – Deja playing guitar

With slow guitar and lilting rhythm, a track which isolates the tenderness and patience within loneliness, yearning for connection with plainspoken charm

Marie/Lepanto – Gramps and Grandma

Justin Peter Kinkel-Schuster on reliably emotive form with the picture of familial love and heartbreak, and Jason Isbell shows up to shred some guitar for good measure.

Maxine Funke – Quiet Shore

A quiet meditation on the mundane aspects of a traumatic moment (a tea tray, a snatched umbrella, a slammed door) that illustrates the potency of memory and how a whisper is often louder than a shout.

Merpire – Heavy Feeling

Has an anxiety attack ever felt so cathartic?

Midwife – God is a Cop

“Am I heartless, or am I soft?” The pressing question at the heart of a track suspended between earnest confession and violent conflagration.

Myriam Gendron – Poor Girl Blues

Gendron combines a traditional Québecois folk song with an old blues one to distil their shared meaning, a lament for the lost, lonely and displaced.

Ovlov – Baby Shea

A 97 second eulogy to Brooklyn’s Shea Stadium played at breakneck pace.

Quivers – Gutters of Love

Ageless Aussie pop that’s a little bit 80s, a little bit 2010s, and a whole lot of joyous reassurance that heartbreak passes and things will be just fine.

Reiko and Tori Kudo – The Deep Valley of Shadow

A soft soliloquy on isolation grows quietly unsettling as warped strings whisper at the edges like anxious thoughts.

Sand Duney – Shadow Outside

Ramshackle country-tinged psych pop built on layered backing tracks thats equal parts meditative and energetic.

Space Mountain – Night Sky

A slacker jam.

When we wrote about ‘Vale’, the debut single from Denver-based musician Allison Lorenzen back in January, first impressions were clear. With Midwife‘s Madeleine Johnston providing guitar and backing vocals, Lorenzen conjured “a shadow space of glisten and reverb that is as ominous as it is alluring.” The atmosphere was stark and brooding, “daring the listener to peer over the edge into the dark depths beyond.” But while the sense of foreboding was evident, a shimmer existed at the song’s edges, a suggestion that it portended something more complicated than straight doom. As we continued:

Beyond the McCarthyian desolation, something else stirs. The sense that, perhaps, the dark is not some adjacent threat, but the very space around us. Perhaps we’re already sitting in darkness, and our inability to flee is not a fearful reaction but a steadfast show of strength. If we’re already in the vale, or indeed are the vale itself, then thoughts can turn in a different direction. Be it hope of future illumination, or merely the knowledge that we can withstand such a space, and learn to live within it.

This complicated relationship between darkness and light is the cornerstone of Tender, Allison Lorenzen’s debut full-length on Whited Sepulchre Records. Written and recorded in the aftermath of a relationship, as well as her previous project School Dance, the album took shape in a strange moment for Lorenzen. Several of her life’s defining characteristics had been removed at once, leaving not only pain and sadness but a deteriorating sense of self. ‘Vale’ is representative of this liminal space. Shadow-veiled and vacant, dreamlike in its intangible swirl but no less heavy, its dark burden weighing on both spirit and mind.

But it is Lorenzen’s vulnerability within this milieu which truly informs the record. Consider the nuance of the title. Tender. Not tough. Easy to cut through. Sensitive to pain. But also warm, affectionate, kindly in outlook and gentle in action. This heightened receptivity and inclination for compassion repositions the vale from terminal nadir to just another milestone on a far longer path. Take ‘Chalk’, a song of movement and change which charts if not the impermanence of pain then at least its habit of fading with time. Jack Manzi’s video finds Lorenzen alone but empowered within a stark environment, aligning her own internal weather with that of the surrounding landscape, thus evoking its grand cycles and propensity for change no matter how severe the present moment.

The style is a subversion of the traditional healing narrative. A rejection of linear progress, an acknowledgement of the uneven topography of life. It’s this embrace of contradictions that allows the ethereal fondness of ‘In a Dream’ to be sandwiched between ‘Vale’ and the stricken ‘Afterthought’ with its needling unease. That allows too for the value of both solitude and company, for loving and being loved, for having both the confidence to walk one’s own path and the ability to submit to the grace of others when in need.

Tender might be a survey of Allison Lorenzen’s emotional journey, though it is less a complete map than an ongoing journal. Or perhaps a map that is so far incomplete, still in progress, drawn in situ and prone to change. The locations might reappear, be reimagined or given new names. Many have no name at all, just feelings judged in comparison to everywhere else. A transience which feels deeply compassionate, hope manifest as an understanding of the potential for change. A complete map would be a key to existence. A definite answer, a solution to life. Tender is not an answer, and this is its greatest strength.

“Quite unlike any other album you’ll hear this year.” That’s how we described Lady Hope, the 2017 album from Seattle-based songwriter Tucker Theodore released by Antiquated Future Records. “With its combination of droning noise and outsider folk, wrapped up with snaking tendrils of dense and snarling rock,” the record was “unapologetically complex and opaque,” practicing a singular style that nevertheless carried its own intuitive, subconscious power. Follow-up LSG pushed the boundaries even further and cast Theodore as something of a model figure. The artist on the fringe, working outside of, or even in triumphant opposition to, the contemporary Playlist Age.

New album Lewiston By The Sea, again released with Antiquated Future, only furthers these sentiments. The record originated from what is described as “skeleton recordings,” produced at the beginning the pandemic with nothing but a cheap synthesizer and a guitar, then evolved slowly over the year as long-distance collaborations fleshed out the tracks. Featuring guest vocals from the likes of Colleen Johnson (Flying Circles) and Jeff Shannon (If It Ain’t Breakfast Don’t Fix It), the result is experimental even by Theodore’s standards, cycling between a variety of narrators and personalities. The shapeshifting doesn’t end there, as the sound also refuses to settle in any one groove, constantly switching between genres and styles.

Single ‘Hollow’ is therefore not so much an introduction to the record, but merely a glimpse of one of its many faces. This track sees Tucker Theodore joined by Madeline Johnston (Midwife) on vocals, their joint chorus emerging stark and ominous from a twitchy lo-fi gloom.

But as if to prove the variability of the album, the song’s portentous, Biblical weight is bookended by very different sounds. Predecessor ‘Spindle Heart’ combines post-punk, post-rock and shoegaze to form a soaring electronic number, while the expansive ambient track ‘Dreaming of Paris’ follows, a song built around Travis’s monologue from Paris, Texas that’s rich with the film’s sense of spacious melancholy. The only real common theme, beyond that nameless Tucker Theodore spirit, is an intermittent glitch, some electronic ripple that either grounds the artifice of the pandemic-era collaboration, or else centres the lonely futuristic potential humanity has now reached.

This question hints at a bigger one which hangs over the record. Is Lewiston By The Sea an organic album? Is it warm or cold? Take ‘Coming Home (I Can See the Fire)’, a seven minute stretch which dips to hell and back, somehow digital and primordial both. Or the removed flickering warmth of ‘Two Turns of the Handle’, the ancient latent dread of ‘After the Fire’ which sounds like the space either pre- or succeeding some great event. But even in the record’s most suffocating moments, those blackest, bleakest or electrical, there is a sense of humanity too. Perhaps hiding somewhere in the shadows, or merely conspicuous in its absence, a living spirit mapped by its own negative space.

Lewiston By The Sea is out now via Antiquated Future Recordings and you can get it from the Tucker Theodore Bandcamp page.

As half of synth duo School Dance, Denver-based artist Allison Lorenzen has developed an ability to inhabit seemingly inhospitable spaces. For no matter how detailed or evocative the soundscapes the band conjured, there was always some overarching austerity to their sound. Some sense of drift. Lorenzen’s vocal melodies proved the ideal medium with which to negotiate such a vastness. Ethereal yet grounded in humanity, a tether to familiar ground, a link to what is known.

This month saw the release of ‘VALE’, the first song Allison Lorenzen has released under her own name. Building upon and pushing beyond the School Dance style, the track embraces the stark and the mysterious, with Madeline Johnston (AKA Midwife) lending guitar and backing vocals to further deepen the sound. What results is a song that lives up to its title, a shadow space of glisten and reverb that is as ominous as it is alluring, daring the listener to peer over the edge into the dark depths beyond.

But as ‘VALE’ unfolds, a different perspective dawns. For beyond the McCarthyian desolation, something else stirs.

Forever is the new album by Midwife, the project of Denver based multi-instrumentalist Madeline Johnston (also of Sister Grotto & mariposa). Released almost three years after the project’s debut album, Like Author, Like Daughter, and its first on The Flenser, Forever sees Johnston continue to forge a path into a genre she describes as “heaven metal.”

As we wrote in our review of Like Author, Like Daughter, Johnston developed the Midwife project during a residency at Rhinoceropolis, a Denver venue/co-op that was closed in 2016 during a period of high tensions around the safety of DIY spaces following Oakland’s Ghost Ship fire. Residents like Johnston found themselves evicted and forced to disperse across Denver to start over. But despite being closed as a physical space, the spirit of Rhinoceropolis lived on, not least in the friendships and creative partnerships that were forged there.

One such relationship was between Johnston and her Rhinoceropolis roommate Colin Ward. “He was my roommate and was the embodiment of that place in a lot of ways,” Johnston describes. “I was always learning so much from him, about life and being an artist. He was an amazing teacher and friend to me.” Sadly, Ward passed away in 2018, and Johnston turned to music to try to capture the ensuing, otherwise indescribable feelings.

Forever is the result, a six song record that the label describe as “a latticework of soft focus guitars and precise melodies—anthems of light piercing through gray clouds of drone.” Opening track ‘2018’ approaches the loss that formed the album’s context head on. “This is really happening to me,” Johnston sings, the track’s ethereal drift like the weightless descent of delayed grief. “Get the fuck away from me 2018.”

Single ‘Anyone Can Play Guitar’ is an attempt to square the enormity of grief against its thousand banal components. Johnston’s declarations—anyone can play guitar, fall in love, say goodbye—could be read as warnings, as self-deprecation, as fatalism in the aftermath of the loss. Maybe the sheer commonality of death makes a joke of us, or perhaps the shared nature of grief elevates us to a higher purpose.

But the confrontation of ‘Anyone Can Play Guitar’ cannot be maintained. The plaintive instrumental ‘Vow’ follows, like the jarring second slap of mourning that arrives later and always in solitude, a creeping, sinking finality that’s been waiting for the guard to drop. Anger and disbelief exhausted, the focus switches to memorial. ‘Language’ comprises of just one line, the first half of which is repeated across the four minute run-time. “How do I say this in every language?” Johnston asks, before following with the second half, delivered just once but with sledgehammer poignancy, “I will never forget you.”

The first half of ‘C.R.F.W’ is a poem read by Ward himself, capturing mortality in the image of a leaf falling away from a tree during autumn, a verse that is incredibly moving even without the prior context (the piece, which can be found in Junk Jet n°5, is experimental in form and presentation, so this is an approximation of the structure according to our display limitations):

d e a t h i s n o t v i o l e n t

if you ask the leaf on the tree in autumn if it is scared to fall off the branch, it will say,

‘i have given all I am to this tree, am tired, and i’ll float on down now’

imagine the way a breeze feels against your leaf body
while you finally don’t have to hold on anymore.

There’s a moment once these final words are delivered, the briefest pause of silence. When Midwife’s haunting tones reemerge, they do so as an extension of this. Non-silence as silence, sound as movement and light. The sensation continues into the fuzzed-out shimmer of finale ‘S.W.I.M’, and somehow works retroactively back through the preceding songs too. The record is not Colin Ward remembered but transfigured, absorbed into some greater energy, some bigger thing. Lost, but only to those left behind. “I wanted to write him a letter,” Johnston says, “I wanted to make something for him in his memory.” But Forever feels more like a letter from him to us. Hang on in there, he seems to be saying. Hang on until it is time to let go.

Forever is out now on The Flenser and you can get it via their webstore or the Midwife Bandcamp page.

Portland’s Antiquated Future Records, run by Joshua James Amberson, are one of the most reliably unpredictable labels around, releasing cassettes from a wide diversity of artists that span genres they describe as “slightly-skewed pop, indie rock, lo-fi folk, oddball electronic, and soundscape wizardry.” An arm of the wider Antiquated Future online store/pop-up shop/zine distro, the tape label brings the same dedication to diverse content and DIY ethos as the zines and art and other artifacts that made Antiquated Future its name.

Excitingly, this summer is Antiquated Future Records’ seventh birthday, and to celebrate the label are releasing The First Seven Years, a compilation that spans their releases to date. Mastered by Fred Thomas, the nineteen-song release is a celebration of the entire Antiquated Future Records roster. Today, we have the pleasure of hosting the whole thing ahead of the physical release next month.

The album opens with the pleasingly retro-sounding (and previously unreleased) ‘A Fast Ska’ by Evan Hashi’s Little Angry & The Sweets, and from there dives into the last seven years of Antiquated Future releases. From the sultry slow burn of Flying Circles to the unmistakable, oddly graceful folk of David Thomas Broughton, the compilation illustrates both the range of the Antiquated Future discography and the common thread that unites every artist, a spirit more than a sound—an unwavering dedication to make art in their own unique way. There are moments of power too, like Tucker Theodore‘s ‘Movement 9 (High Descent)’ with it’s distorted post-rock vibes, and the slow tidal rhythms of Midwife‘s ‘Angel’, Madeline Johnston’s voice grainy as though beamed from the bottom of a murky pool of static.

This variety continues across the entire compilation. The subtly euphoric crystalline dreamscape of Reighnbeau‘s ‘Gold Face’ segues into the sparkling but emotionally poignant pop gem ‘Never Finds You’ by VSF fav The Washboard Abs, a track we previously described as “quietly devastating […] forgo[ing] any sense of metaphor or allusion in favour of a brave and direct account of dealing with the serious illness of a loved one.” There’s a devotional quality to Jordan O’ Jordan‘s ‘Patience is Gruesome’, a wheezing hymn that escalates into a shrieking choir, while Sara Renberg brings wry humour that wouldn’t be out of place in a whip-smart graphic novel, and Eleanor Murray delivers a smooth and intimate folk song to close things out.

But don’t take our word for it, stream the whole thing below and find your favourite:

Wake the Deaf entered a cosy little chrysalis in the spring, emerging as Various Small Flames a little while later. So much so, it was hard to select our very favourite albums, but in the spirit of the season, here’s a list of the 20 that stood out to us, in no particular order.

“[Lenker’s vocals] unfurl like a magician’s silk scarves, a perpetual unravelling shaped by a poetic, negentropic logic. [It] is as though the meaning is summoned from the words themselves, something in the syllabic arrangement dragging stories and emotions into our world from somewhere else entirely. Lenker’s gift is her ability to recognise the strange, innate forces within language, surrender to them, and present them back to us with a crystal-clear clarity.”

“Ross feels like a narrator dropped into an ongoing narrative, not fully aware of the beginning or end, or even any coherent context, yet haunted by profound sensations of sadness, fear and guilt—an unshakeable, existential dread that suggests we’re going to pay for how this story is panning out. Wild Pink haven’t come to us amidst this chaos with magic cures or quick-fix solutions, but they’ve come to us nonetheless. Right now, that’s probably the most valuable and noble thing any of us can do.”

“The Wooden Sky are making music with emotion, intelligence and integrity, songs in which you can both lose and find yourself, and perhaps even connect with the plight of others. We’re all trying to survive strange waters to some degree, and the record’s intent on illuminating this fact—both appreciating your constant kicking beneath the surface, and imploring you to help those that may be tiring, or entering even rougher seas.”

“This is the sort of music that makes you feel part of a something, it does reflect a big sad and confused gang spread out all over the world, and we should be connected by shared experience and a sneaky feeling that life is worth living. However, to mark Infinite Worlds as simply sad or lonely falls into to the very trap of binarism that the album spends so much time fighting. Yes, it’s mournful but joyous too. It’s bedroom pop and indie rock and experimental ambient. It’s immensely personal and broadly relatable. It’s Vagabon, though only as it sounds right now.”

“Casey returns to his own struggles with the irony of being an artist in such a world, where to not speak against the absurdity of the system is to become complicit, yet knowing those very absurdities render his words meaningless. Rather than give up, or persevere nobly, Casey twists his art into the shape of this double-bind, using self-deprecation to cover any hint of naivety. “I have a backlog of so-called prophets,” a character tells a Messiah-like oracle near the beginning of the [final song]. “You are of a multitude.” The preacher insists he witnesses truth, to which the first character reacts with genuine confusion and interest. “The truth?” he asks. “What is it?””

“Part folk, part dream pop, part something else entirely, her music combines equal parts delicacy and foreboding with an impressive patience and emotional intensity […] concerned with the underworld, more specifically descending into as a mode of growth and rebirth (a la Persephone), and [showing] off the interplay between shadow and light that constitutes the record’s aesthetic.”

Or maybe it’s about making peace with the current space, acknowledging that perhaps true communication is impossible, and that trying to live with this understanding might be the most sympathetic and empathetic path available to us.”

“Real Life Buildings capture both the quiet minutiae of day to day living—the soft feeling you get in an empty room with just a ticking clock and raindrops on the window pane for company—and the exhilarating rush of joy that is still sometimes possible. It’s music that, despite its anxiety and concern, still sees that silvery sheen of magic in the mundane, a fun indie rock record and a lesson in paying attention to what’s going on both inside and outside your head.”

It’s a reminder that we’re all able to help ourselves and each other, and that we will be better people for both.”

“Less like a chronicle of a disintegrating relationship than the beginning of a process of self-examination, of moving forward, of weighing things up day-by-day and acting accordingly […] On Mise En Place, Alex Napping somehow manage to marry the immediacy of good pop songs with a slow-burning complexity, proving that meaningful songs can still be fun, and that great pop songs need not be a simple shallow sugar rush.”

“There’s a danger that pushing everything through the Trumpian prism collapses some of the intricacies and nuances of art. After all, The Donald is a product of the disaffection Finn is exploring here, not the cause. The problem is deeper and more complex than any government-related trouble, and Finn is too wise to offer much in the way of an answer. Instead, he suggests we shift the focus of our questions. Because We All Want the Same Things is an album about relationships, but not in the usual sense. Not the transcendental, star-aligned love of Billboard hits and Hollywood flicks but coupling based on common needs. Not life-changing answers but life-preserving strategies. Luckily, in the hands of Craig Finn, this version of ‘romance’ feels somehow more fulfilling, the opposite of cynical, for better or for worse, genuinely human. Perhaps the revolution in the conclusion isn’t some violent revolt or epiphanic break, rather a gradual yet constant commitment to challenging our own expectations. To stop wanting too much for ourselves and to start being sympathetic to others. A comeback story, of sorts.”

“There’s something joyfully nostalgic [about II]…the aural equivalent of the era it borrows from musically. It’s wrapped up in the warm fuzzy tape hiss of the late 80s / early 90s, that period of endless possibility, where everything was colourful and exciting and came with a free toy.”

Each track is pure and sincere and deceptively rich, each created within its own little world, or perhaps conjuring a snapshot of a particular time/place in our own. The positive outlook never seems like some near-forgotten memory. It’s as if Sondermann is using Pleasure Systems to focus all of the hope and love into a beam which is aimed at the shadow, a beam which might not make the problem go away, but can at least be used as a formidable weapon in the forthcoming struggle.”

This duality goes for the atmosphere too. It’s impossible to pack the album away into an explicit genre or emotion, somehow conveying the whole spectrum, swelling triumph and crushing defeat, bright white hope and oil-black despair. But, ultimately, almost unbelievably, the message is positive. Even during the moments where the music sounds like the apocalypse, a tangible, sonic manifestation of loneliness and despair, Johnston provides a thread to hold on to, a reminder that the human spirit is the one thing that can, and will, endure.”

“For all the difficulty and heartache that clearly went into it’s creation, Mother of My Children ultimately feels like Black Belt Eagle Scout making a clarion call, a proud statement that is intended to encourage other queer people of colour to use art as a source of strength, self-knowledge and empowerment. But it’s more than just an artistic statement. The album has both focus and depth, exploring themes directly with its lyrics and more indirectly with the atmosphere it conjures.”

“Frankenstein Songs for the Grocery Store finds CHUCK doing what he does best, making songs that are catchy and funny and unashamedly “pop” and all undoubtedly good fun. But there’s always that something else to his songs too, something that’s harder to put a finger on, a nod to the vacuum at the centre of our 21st century consumerist culture.”

“Unpick[ing] the knots and tangles that have developed through[out] life, both retracing steps and forging ahead to discover something closer to [an] authentic self […] Gruñona is a journey without a clear destination, a question without an answer. An attempt to map identity not to achieve some clear-cut conclusion but rather in the hope of better understanding how history and culture and personal beliefs shape the people we are and were, the people we will be.”

“This is an album full of ghosts, both literal and metaphoric, from the disembodied voices that sometimes interrupt the broadcast, to Pennycook’s characters themselves, all coalescing to create a grand sense of melancholy […] but [the final song] see a sense of advancement, a suggestion that the ghosts might finally be confined to the past, where they belong.”

“Soft Spots finds Adult Mom with a new sense of self-assurance. These songs contain genuine hurt but also genuine hope, the narrator finally in possession of the bravery necessary to open up to people. It’s hard to think of a more fitting illustration of the album than the pickled pink peaches on the cover art. Yes, the fruits may get bruised if the jar is opened, but how else would anyone know how soft and sweet they are?”

“The album is an introspective one, based around big questions of where the narrator wants to be and what kind of life they want to live. In that way, it feels like a re-evaluation, the bright and hopeful result of much thought and worry […] The Way That It Feels hits a nice balance between the weighty and the not. It’s an album as poetic and pretty as it is serious and sincere, and marks Bea Troxel as a name to watch among contemporary folk musicians.”
