<p>The good news is that those two pieces were just a preview of a full-length album. Titled <em>BODY SOUND</em>, the collection adds another ten pieces, all of which move with the same grace and instinctive understanding of one other that stems at least in part from the distinctive creative process which brought the songs to life. Johnson, Kohl and Stewart first laid down improvised pieces using their voices and cello, viola and violin respectively, before using tape machines to manipulate them in real time, running the original sounds through all manner of loops and effects to build layers and create entirely new compositions.</p>
<p>The double layer of improvisation is where the trio find the magic, and what makes <em>BODY SOUND</em> such an exciting prospect. The sound of three artists forming an ephemeral symbiotic relationship, reaching places it would be impossible to go alone. “Improvisation has a special capacity to facilitate a kind of sonic intimacy,” Kohl describes of the process. “We&#8217;re making choices together in the moment. We&#8217;re creating time together before thought enters the equation. It&#8217;s an incredibly intimate and intuitive space to share, and feels like the heart center of this music and this practice.”</p>
<p>In anticipation of the record, the group have unveiled a new single, &#8216;dawn | pulse&#8217;. It&#8217;s every bit as enchanting as &#8216;stone | piece&#8217;, its soaring strings and wordless vocals creating an atmosphere that verges on the devotional. Check it out below:</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In response to the recent catastrophic wildfires in Los Angeles, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/little-mazarn/">Little Mazarn</a>, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/hemlock/">hemlock</a> and Jolie Holland have come together to organise <em>If I Could Only Fly</em>, a benefit compilation in support of <a href="https://www.sweetrelief.org/naturaldisasterfund.html">Sweet Relief</a>. &#8220;In November of 2024, [we] went into the studio to record an EP with our friend Jolie Holland,&#8221; explains Little Mazarn&#8217;s Lindsey Verrill. &#8220;The vibe in the studio was heavy, we were recording on election Tuesday and avoiding the news which inevitably reached us all later that night. The songs we recorded [&#8230;] captured that heaviness but also something else, a deep feeling of being held by our togetherness, despite it all!&#8221;</p>
<p>When news of the fires broke in January 2025, Verrill&#8217;s mind returned to this feeling. &#8220;The faces I was seeing online of people who were fleeing, who lost everything, were friends, family, and collaborators,&#8221; they continue. &#8220;The helpless darkness was creeping in. I grasped for that feeling, that feeling of being held and together and supported that threaded through the music we created on Election Day. I called up Jolie and Carolina about our comp idea.&#8221;</p>
<p>The resulting release features over forty tracks by an array of talent, including VSF favs like <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/karima-walker/">Karima Walker</a>, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/advance-base/">Advance Base</a>, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/tobacco-city/">Tobacco City</a>, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/macie-stewart/">Macie Stewart</a>, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/allegra-krieger/">Allegra Krieger</a>, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/squirrel-flower">Squirrel Flower</a>, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/claire-rousay/">Claire Rousay</a>, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/lisaliza/">Lisa/Liza</a>, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/stephen-steinbrink">Stephen Steinbrink</a>, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/tasha/">Tasha</a>, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/eliza-niemi/">Eliza Niemi</a>, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/sophia-corinne/">Sophia Corinne</a> and many others. But where some compilations which take the maximalist approach end up with a disparate, scattergun feel, <em>If I Could Only Fly</em> maintains a clear, uniting vibe despite the diversity of its artists. A sense of cohesion and togetherness which hints at the radical potential within the collective, something we need to remember now more than ever as the suite of challenges which marks the contemporary moment only widens and deepens. As Verrill continues:</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">KT Laine &#8211; Again</h3>
<p>Drawing inspiration from contemporaries like Big Thief and classics such as Judee Sill, KT Laine is a songwriter from <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/victoria/">Victoria</a>, BC who is soon to release her debut full-length <em>Knock Knee</em> on Victory Pool. New single &#8216;Again&#8217; is the perfect introduction to the nuance of her work, its warm fondness complicated by uncertainty, lending the track an inscrutable air which never quite reveals its hand. &#8216;Again&#8217; centres on a relationship in some kind of turmoil, its pieces pushing apart, though it is never quite clear if the longing at the track&#8217;s heart wants to reconnect these parts or sever the ties for good.</p>

<p>We last featured <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/bristol/">Bristol</a>&#8216;s Langkamer back <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2022/05/02/weekly-listening-may-2022-1/">in May</a>, when we wrote about their single &#8216;Soul Bucket&#8217;, what we described as &#8220;a bit of folk, a bit of indie rock, a ton of playful personality.&#8221; Now Langkamer have announced a brand new EP on <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/breakfast-records/">Breakfast Records</a>. Titled <em>Red Thread Route</em>, the record promises to expand on the band&#8217;s signature combination of slacker era indie rock and easy country-influenced melodies, albeit with a few surprises up its sleeve. Lead single &#8216;Total Motion&#8217; is a great introduction, its twisty, loud-quiet dynamic giving way to an anthemic singalong chorus. Willie J Healey provides guest vocals, one of several guests of the EP seemingly cherrypicked from Bristol&#8217;s music scene. Check out the video by JJ Jarman and Jimmy Taylor below:</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Leggy &#8211; Lipstick on the Mic</h3>
<p>We first covered <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/cincinnati/">Cincinnati</a>&#8216;s <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/leggy/">Leggy</a> back in 2019, describing how the innate tension of single &#8216;<a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2019/02/22/leggy-taffy/">Taffy</a>&#8216; offered &#8220;a tautness that always appears on the verge of snapping.&#8221; While the rambunctious punk rock style of that track has been swapped out in favour of something more languid on new single, &#8216;Lipstick on the Mic&#8217;, the sense of building pressure remains. This time a sensuous combination of desire and frustration, the song sitting on the knife edge of pleasure and pain yet wrapped within a hazy shawl. A sense of remove which allows a view into the paradox of the situation even as it plays out. &#8220;I love to be alone,&#8221; as the chorus puts it, &#8220;why do I live to be in love?&#8221; Check out the suitably sultry and surreal video by Twenty Twenty Productions below:</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Levi Thomas &#8211; Shasta</h3>
<p>The title track of the third album from <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/oakland/">Oakland</a>&#8216;s Levi Thomas, &#8216;Shasta&#8217; is a song seized by the sublime scale of the American West. &#8220;The neons fade / To the pink cascade / And right now I can’t feel a thing,&#8221; Thomas sings. &#8220;The sun don’t rise / Under wild skies / All the shit just starts to shine.&#8221; The revelatory experience is captured with a decidedly seventies style, equal parts classic country and cosmic psych which invites the listener into the moment, never losing control of its relaxed rhythms despite everything.</p>

<p>Released on <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/Orindal-Records">Orindal</a> back in 2021, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/macie-stewart/">Macie Stewart</a>&#8216;s <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2022/01/10/albums-we-missed-in-2021/"><em>Mouth Full of Glass</em></a> was a journey in solo creation after a career of collaboration. The sound of &#8220;an artist surveying their own inner workings through considered and open-ended exploration,&#8221; as we put it. &#8220;Leaning into solitude as a medium of discovery and learning from all that has occurred before without ever becoming beholden to the past.&#8221; The album is getting a new release next month via <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/full-time-hobby/">Full Time Hobby</a>, and has been expanded to include two new singles. One of the tracks, &#8216;Defeat&#8217;, is a direct confrontation of the stresses of working with others, warning of the dangers of overcommitting and how it can end up withering the very creativity is should foster. Stewart takes on all the instrumentation on the song, with the exception of flutes from<a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/v-v-lightbody/"> V.V. <p>To describe the work of <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/michael-cormier-oleary/">Michael Cormier O&#8217;Leary</a> takes some time. From the playful warmth of last year&#8217;s solo album <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2021/07/08/michael-cormier-more-light/"><em>More Light!!</em></a> to the almost fragile intricacy of <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/hour/">Hour</a>, not to mention his work in <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/Friendship">Friendship</a>, Cormier O&#8217;Leary spans the full spectrum between free and controlled. Out next month of Lily Tapes &amp; Discs, new solo release <em>Heard From The Next Room </em>moves completely toward the former, an exploratory, spontaneous collection of improvised piano compositions recorded on a single day earlier this year. The resulting two pieces live up to the release&#8217;s title in their unguarded charm, following the haphazard rhythms of the moment without any sense of outside audience, and thereby capturing an easy comfort only possible at home. <p>Back in September we wrote about &#8216;<a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2022/09/09/volunteer-department-make-it-easy/">Make It Easy</a>&#8216; by <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/nashville">Nashville</a>&#8216;s <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/volunteer-department/">Volunteer Department</a>, the first track from a forthcoming release on <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/like-you-mean-it-records/">Like You Mean It Records</a>. <p>With new album <em>ISH</em> on the horizon via K&amp;F Records, Wayne Graham have shared one last single as a final taster of what to expect before release. Primarily the project of brothers Kenny and Hayden Miles, the Whitesburg, Kentucky outfit wrote a new album in the years since previous record <em>1% Fruit</em>, though decided to change course for what would eventually become <em>ISH</em>. What emerged was something more intimate and ambitious, drawing on science, fiction and scripture to search for meaning in this strange world. &#8216;How Was Your Night?&#8217; not only opens the album but poses the question which hangs over everything which follows.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>We haven&#8217;t done the whole Year End List thing for a while, but last year decided to do a <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2021/01/11/music-we-missed-in-2020/">list of our favourite songs from 2020</a> that we failed to cover. It seemed like a good way to share some of the things we loved but for whatever reason didn&#8217;t write about, and was hopefully something more constructive than the arbitrary rankings of most Year End lists.</p>
<p>We&#8217;ve decided to expand things slightly this year, giving ourselves a chance to write a little something about the albums we wanted to cover but never got the opportunity. Albums which meant something to us at various points through 2021. Some cemented themselves early as our favourites of the year, others were relatively late additions that held our attention as the calendars changed, and a few break the rules in being albums released in previous years but earn their inclusion here having proved constant companions through last twelve months.</p>
<p>So here are some records we really enjoyed in 2021. We hope you enjoy them too.</p>

Their third release, </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">Garden Bed</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> is as sweet and soft as the peachy pink cover art, taking the gloomy fog of slowcore and holding a light beneath it, the cloud suddenly enveloping and bright. Paired with the earnest tenderness of Kennedy’s vocals, the songs come to feel like old companions. Fond and quietly contemplative, strangely familiar and hopeful in a manner not quite explicable. Songs easy to be around and easier to return to, comforting in the very fact they exist.</span></p>

Inspired by the conspicuous absence of karaoke during recent times, the release takes tracks from acts both old and new and reimagines them in the image of Ashworth’s distinctively hushed and empathetic style. With a mixture of classics (Lucinda Williams, Iris DeMent, St. John Prine) and contemporaries/<a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/orindal-records/">Orindal Records</a> label mates (<a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/dan-wriggins/">Dan Wriggins</a>, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/gia-margaret/">Gia Margaret</a>, Wednesday). The collection will resonate differently depending on who’s listening, but chances are there&#8217;ll be at least one occasion where the introduction is more like a reintroduction. An old friend smiling through the years, suddenly before you once again. </span></p>

The record is inspired by the work of Indian sculptor Mrinalini Mukherjee, an artist who explored the line between allegory and abstraction with an intuitive fluidity, and Jenkins follows this lead to spin her surroundings into representations of her own. But &#8216;taking inspiration&#8217; doesn’t quite capture the song&#8217;s true extent, as Jurado channels the fictional doctor, his delivery neither quite Fever or himself but a blend of the two. &#8220;Who&#8217;ll wear the crown when the change is approaching / Of some other season renown?&#8221; this hybrid figure asks as the track winds tighter with every line. This latent intensity is brought to the surface in the finale, an urgent beseeching that we hang on a little longer. &#8220;As I exited north the radio spoke / &#8216;All is not lost even if you&#8217;re without a direction&#8217;,&#8221; goes the final verse. &#8220;Go west, go west, 1972 / The sun hasn&#8217;t set, the stars very few / Just stick around &#8217;til the light pushes into the darkness.&#8221;</span></p>

A high-speed race with a whole lot of entrants but not so many finishers. The participants are older, their communities atomised, their world having been sliced up and commodified by tech-savvy barons both ruthless and polite. In this way, the band’s eighth album feels a closer descendant of Craig Finn’s solo records than more recent Hold Steady records. A considered, cohesive </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">album </span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">of</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> narrative-driven songs which offer glimpses into the lives of imperfect figures dissatisfied or downtrodden and merely surviving. Finn &amp; Co. mean many different things to many different people, but too often their work is (mis)understood as a mere good time. As though the joy of The Hold Steady is solely the joy of the party. But like so many of their records before it, </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">Open Door Policy</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> is proof of something deeper and more profound. The quiet, ugly dignity of humans persevering, and the irreplaceable value of a community to see them through.</span></p>

It was a fear intensely human yet inorganic, recasting life as a path with danger around every bend. <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/chicago/">Chicago</a>&#8216;s KUZU throw us into such a heightened state, their improvisational jazz guarding its hand, leaving the listener no choice but to strap in and follow the slow-burning yet ever shifting lines. But from within the anxiety of this undetermined ride, an overarching conviction emerges. The sense everything is barrelling toward some spectacular finale. The dreadful shattering event. The screw turns and turns, the sound needling with increasingly deranged energy, leaving the listener like Gene Hackman’s Harry Caul at the end of </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">The Conversation</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">, tearing their surroundings rather than break apart themselves.</span></p>

The colonial past and capitalist present manifest in all its unease. A violence which seeps out, haunting even the record’s most tender moments. Lindeman repeatedly turns to the natural world as an escape, from the birds of ‘Parking Lot’ to the &#8220;cold metallic scent of snow&#8221; in &#8216;Subdivisions&#8217;, the sky, the green, the soft of &#8216;Heart&#8217;. But as it says in &#8216;Loss&#8217;, &#8220;At some point you’d have to live as if the truth was true.&#8221; Nature might still persist, but it is the robber who built the world around us. His hand is still in our pockets. Even the sunset on &#8216;Atlantic&#8217; is blood red.</span></p>

But if one feature has stretched through his work, it&#8217;s the art of introspection. But then came the late 2010s and the intensification </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">of our rightward spiral down. Faced with such pressing political issues, Stratton went into </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">The Changing Wilderness</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> with a new desire to engage with the wider world. To write a record which might catalogue the atrocities of this moment. As he sings on &#8216;When I&#8217;ve Been Born (I’ll Love You)&#8217;: &#8220;The present is prosaic / The future, a disgrace / We can&#8217;t just look away now / It stares us in the face.&#8221; Capturing the tone of the record, the song charts the profound sickness of our times, and can’t help but slip back toward self-examination in the face of such horror. A search which emerges with no solution beyond a determination to face the worst undaunted. “When I get my prize, I&#8217;ll love you,” goes the chorus. &#8220;As the oceans rise, I&#8217;ll love you / When the air gеts thin, I&#8217;ll love you / If the fascists win, I&#8217;ll love you.&#8221;</span></p>
