Our inbox is in a perpetual state of bursting at the seams, and we like to spend time with every release we write about. There are simply not enough hours in the day to cover everything we’d like to, and often some of our very favourite releases slip by without a word. That makes us feel bad (and is probably the reason we didn’t reply to your email), so we decided to make a slightly different list in lieu of the usual Year End fare.

Here is a list of songs from 2020 that we liked but didn’t get around to writing about.

““The songs are intended to be a comfort for folks going through their own tough times,” Ashworth explained in an essay for Talkhouse. “Commiseration has always been a guiding principle of my songwriting.” Love need not be hugs and hearts and kisses, and loyalty does not necessarily mean hanging in a relationship beyond all reason. But love is loyalty, and Owen Ashworth has been, and seemingly always will be, loyal to those who need it most.”

Basement Revolver – Heavy Eyes

Sonic Unyon / Fear of Missing Out Records

“An expansive and spacious sound that’s lit up with a slow-burning emotional resonance, centring around Hurn’s impassioned vocal delivery. Their music combines the magnitude and granular glitter of shoegaze, the personal songwriting of bedroom pop and the cathartic noise of 90s indie rock. [Basement Revolver] play a double game of big and small, switching from quiet personal sentiment to big bombastic broadcast, often within the same song.”

Benjamin Shaw – Megadead

Audio Antihero

“For all the frustration and (self-)loathing in show, there’s also something else. Perhaps the defining characteristics of Shaw’s music is its ability to transcend its own themes. He may be singing about hating his job, about going nowhere fast, but in doing so colours these things with meaning. To create art is to communicate, and as such the songs represent the antithesis to their own concerns, the simulated happiness and artificial connection punctured through their ironic presence.”

“[Closer ‘Sorceress’] at first might seem a slightly strange segue for a final track soon straightens out into an intuitive sense of logic and belonging, as though the album-long teeter on the edge of some epiphanic transformation has finally fallen headlong at the last moment.”

Damien Jurado – The Horizon Just Laughed

Secretly Canadian

“While it might be tempting to view [Jurado’s] songwriting career as a fruitless quest for his true identity, perhaps the complete opposite is true. His career is his identity, splinters of truth arriving through dreams or divined from another realm entirely, fractals that can be arranged into a whole that far surpasses the meaning of any one component. A manifesto of sorts, one full of prophecy and history, though rather than country-western stars of [Joseph Billie] Gwin’s vision, the Ten Prophets of Damien Jurado are merely alternate versions of himself—past, present, future, dream—each record its own style or consciousness, born of him, yes, but equal to him too.”

Dear Nora – Skulls Example

Orindal Records

“You can be anyone, we are told, do anything, though only superficially, a multitude of simulations all working toward to same goal, the means to the end of shifting units and making money. Dear Nora’s music attempts to undermine this by playing the same game, crafting an unreal reality of their own to overlay the other. And, by neutering the money-making end, they in effect invert capitalism’s technique, reestablishing the means (ie. living) as the purpose. Yes, Skulls Example might be a simulation, but it is one of the most meaningful and rewarding you could hope to find.”

“The summertime theme might conjure ideas of cloudless, uptempo good times, but to limit Field Report’s use of the season to a more poppy sound is to miss the deeper point […] We cannot rely on grand promises or paradigm shifts. Rather, we must commit to the slow, considered process of letting go and working through, of deciding who we were and who we want to be. In these times, we’d be foolish to trust that will be enough, but belief in small moments of agency and human connection is more productive than misplaced prayers for epiphany.”

“free cake for every creature don’t make sad songs exactly, usually tending toward a kind and hopeful feel. Yet there is something intangible about them, a strange sensation that weaves its way into quiet moments, like a kind of everyday poetry or nostalgia that we all recognise but don’t have a name for. The case in point is the penultimate song, ‘be home soon’, which somehow portrays a subway ride home as something beautiful and magical.”

“The palette of Gia Margaret is built from shades of sadness—loss, regret, wistful longing, the arresting trap of nostalgia and plain old hurt—though again and again Margaret provides a counter-shade, as though the darkness’ true purpose is merely to highlight the warm, weak glow within. Because, while people up and leave, and time is certainly no kinder, Gia Margaret is here to prove that value is inherent in life itself, meaning and fulfilment not in spite of troubles, but within them. No matter how dark, there is always glimmer.”

“I Need To Start a Garden is the perfect album for the onset of spring. It’s all about growth and the hope of new beginnings, but also doesn’t shy away from the necessary hard work that makes such growth possible.
“The context [of bereavement] is important not because we wish to suggest some ‘romantic’ mythology behind the record (indeed, the songs were written before the tragedy occurred), or that there is magical healing power in the making/consumption of art.
“Sincerity could be said to represent Slow Buzz as a whole, though sincerity not as some sentimental force rather a commitment to what feels true, no matter how messy and conflicting.
“Clarke Sondermann’s music has always been intimate, but this album treads deeper into this ideal than any of his previous work. In the circumstances, it would be relatively easy to make an album of sad songs, but it’s a brave artist who takes the very personal worry and suffering and uses it to build something that’s this complex and multifaceted, vulnerable but not hopeless, forgoing nihilistic dejection in favour of a strange kind of love, an appreciation of what stands to be lost.”

“Seemingly simple but rendered dense and cryptic with the addition of Parcell’s poetry […] Seventh Song Counts the Engines is a beautiful collection of songs, one which somehow makes a bold statement in a circuitous whisper, deceptively complex instrumentation and ambiguous lyrics capturing decidedly unambiguous emotion.”

“How do you adopt a more sincere, hopeful position without becoming a flat Sincere, Hopeful Person, and everything that image entails? Young Jesus have put their hope in a spontaneous, endlessly recursive form of questioning, where every hard fought answer only exists to be questioned further. The endeavour might well take a life time, but the prospect of circling closer to the truth is something of a solution in its own right. So, while it’s tempting to think that the true message or meaning of the songs on The Whole Thing Is Just There is always just out of frame, the reality is in fact the other way around. The message of the songs is that meaning is always just out of frame, and that there is no more valuable an enterprise than the constant search outside and beyond.”

“The writing is vague and affecting, words imbued with an esoteric power that fuses intimate internal thoughts from the corporeal world with something altogether more supernatural. “I bear the mark, I am sigil,” Jones sings, “to the spirits and the sprites, but I promised not to listen and stay in my life.” The natural and supernatural converge on Black Dog In My Path, and Jones has re-purposed Yowler as the conduit between these two dimensions.”

Though strictly the recording project of Benjamin Lovell, Lung Cycles is a collaborative endeavour. Featuring the likes of Jason Calhoun (naps), Bill Delaney (The National Park Service), Jeremy Ferris (Cla-ras), Dan Knishkowy (Adeline Hotel), Francis Lyons (Dumperall) and Daniel Stuhr (Vierzig Skizzen), the project draws the talents of many into a focused ideal, building not so much songs as worlds or dimensions, spaces separate from our own.

That Lung Cycles ‘songs’ could not quite be labelled as such is explored in a bio by Emmerich Anklam (AKA Distant Reader), who points to the position of Lovell within the tracks as evidence of their idiosyncratic nature. “A song implies a singer at center stage,” Anklam says, “a voice that plays ruler of the song’s little kingdom. There’s something deist about these new [Lung Cycles] songs, as if the musicians are setting them up and then sneaking away quietly while the music continues to play.”

The first collection from Lung Cycles in five years, the new self-titled album feels like a fulfilment of such a process. It is as though the collaborative nature of the recording has decentralised any power, and, with no one authority controlling the outcome, the songs are left to grow in their own directions. As a result, Lovell and co. are less artists dictating their views and ideas as gateways through which something else entirely can emerge.

Which might sound New Age-y and trite, but the reality is anything but. Because the forces being channelled are not Moon Goddesses and Solar Deities, but rather more mundane, humanistic things such as patience and sensitivity. Lung Cycles is in many ways the antithesis of our contemporary existence, unhurried and understated and underpinned by a sense of natural rhythm at odds with our new world. It is not aiming to trigger or assuage some base desire, nor looking to exploit some easily provoked emotion. Instead, the record is happy to be more diffuse and aimless, and indeed it is in that very lack of cynical purpose that Lung Cycles unearth meaning and value. As Anklam puts it:

Lung Cycles aren’t erasing themselves from the picture, but they’re not imposing themselves on you either. They’re giving themselves the freedom to move into the background and observe the play of light and color and shadow, savoring the loose embrace of a warm night, making their richly textured collective dreams responsive to the outside world’s serendipity.

Opening track ‘As the sun stayed down’ is a case in point, balanced somewhere between peace and dread and never quite toppling in either direction. Lovell’s vocal emerge and dissipate with the uneven cadence of breeze through the trees, though his delivery itself is composed and straight, as though removed from the emotions of the soundscape by time or space. “It’s like he’s speaking softly to a confidant late at night,” Anklam puts it, “recounting the strains of the day while acknowledging the need to let them go.”

The title of ‘Hottest day of the year so far (4pm version)’ elucidates the tone of the track, a gentle meandering song filled with glinting brightness, the harsh heat of noon softened into golden haze as the shadows slowly stretch. A similar vibe follows through onto ‘Cammal’, like a good day as recalled in memory where all edges are rounded into idyllic tranquillity. That Lovell adds no vocals to these tracks is pertinent, his silence signalling not an absence but a presence, and one too serene to put into language.

Indeed, it is notable that the return of the vocals on ‘Following me up the stairs’ and ‘Blue Rochester moon’ signals a slight shift in mood toward something a little more troubled. The tenderness remains, the emotion more thoughtful than tortured, though comparison with the instrumental middle section is marked. The placid natural flow continues whether we voice our concerns or not, and nothing in this external sphere is working to exacerbate our feelings. In this way, Lung Cycles reveals anxiety and melancholy to be no more than parasites of the human psyche, forces all too willing to consume us should we centre our existence within our own heads, but soon found dead in the vacuum of natural quiet.

Lily Tapes & Discs are back with yet another great release, this time bringing together two of our favs, Jason Calhoun’s naps and Ben Lovell’s Lung Cycles, on one beautifully presented tape.

naps gets side A, Calhoun’s now signature blend of ambient drone and field recording delivered with a previously unheard glowing lucidity. As Lily Tapes puts it, “[the] poignant clarity that was only hinted at before now cracked wide open.” It’s soft and somnolent but so much more than a pink-noise sleep aid, four songs that scoop out a space in the day for reflection, soothing and stirring in equal measure.

‘First’ feels like a dawn, both literally and metaphorically, like lemon-yellow sunbeams slowly spreading across a grey landscape, while ‘Second’ feels like the gentle unfurling of morning as it shimmers its way through its ten minute run-time. ‘Ninth’, the shortest naps track on the tape, pairs the drones with abstract field recordings, gentle clicks and clacks that somehow conjure a cosy and reassuring feeling.

The Lung Cycles side comprises of pipe organ recorded live to tape in an empty cathedral, and is every bit as haunting and reverential as that sounds. The earth has turned its back on the morning sun from the naps side, Lovell’s improvised performance like a flame flickering in the dark. ‘rvc’ is quietly devastating, using some key changes that make your stomach drop in their understated emotion, while ‘dcs’ continues this vibe, a weird nightsong playing to itself in an empty room.

The tape closes on another +10 minute slow burn, a song that eventually burns as dramatic as any of the others. It’s the perfect patient end to an album that does things at its own pace, in it’s own way. You can get the naps / lung cycles split now on cassette and download from the Lily Tapes and Discs Bandcamp page.

Along with the recently reviewed album by Vierzig Skizzen, VSF favs Lily Tapes & Discs also released a new split from Cla-ras and Ben Lovell’s Lung Cycles, the seventh in their series of double releases.

The A-side belongs to Cla-ras, a new project based in Providence Rhode Island, and one that seems tailor made for Lily Tapes. The only track, ‘I Could Taste Iodine in the Drinking Water’, is almost 20 minutes of subtly affecting drone and guitar, the soundtrack for a lonely afternoon in a bare room. The tape’s only vocals emerge after around seven and a half minutes, a spoken word piece adapted from a work by Mary Shelley, which begins, “The picture that I present to you is peaceful and human and you must feel that you can deny it only in the oneness of power and cruelty.”

The flip side belongs to Lung Cycles, the first release from Ben Lovell’s project since 2016’s reissue of On Being Lumpy, and the first new material since 2015. It comprises of three tracks that are every bit as pretty as we’ve come to expect from Lung Cycles, what the blurb describes as “a loose constellation of slow meditations on quick ideas, left alone to simmer while we wait for the room to heat up.”

‘Following Me Up the Stairs’ is built on a spare and repetitive guitar line which creates a ruminative sense of calm, before ‘hottest day of the year so far’ grows out of subtle textures to become a strangely emotional guitar song, voices from a far off TV adding to the atmosphere. All that’s left then is finale ‘Smoke column (Jonathan)’, which feels like what remains after the release has burnt itself out, ashen grey and vaguely ominous, part meditative guitar song and part field recording. However you want to describe it, it’s undeniably beautiful.

So Many Singing is a compilation from label Ruination Record Co. in support of the International Refugee Assistance Project. The IRAP is a New York City based non-profit that mobilizes legal aid and systemic policy advocacy to serve refugees and other displaced persons across the world. And you don’t need us to tell you how important work like this is in the current political climate.

The lineup is incredible, Ruination Record Co. managing to recruit lots and lots of bands and artists who we’ve loved (and featured) in the last few years. So if, like us, you’ve grown to love the experimental bedroom ambient of Lung Cycles, or the quietly infectious and odd pop of Trace Mountains, or the heart-on-sleeve bedroom pop of Tall Friend, then this is the charity compilation for you.

And that’s not to mention Ben Seretan or Wilder Maker, LVL Up or Will Stratton, Minor Moon or Adeline Hotel or Horse Teeth. I think you get the idea. And, not content to sit comfortably in one genre, there’s something for everyone here, even if every one of these bands is new to you. There are folk songs and electronic songs and straight up indie rock songs, sad ones and mad ones and kinda strange ones. For example, Obody’s ‘Something That You Are’ is warm and wheezing, the elegant baritone vocals reminiscent of Frederick Squire, while Strange Ranger transform ‘San Francisco Earthquake’ into an arrestingly lo-fi acoustic track.

It feels like a big pick ‘n mix bag of sweets, you have no idea of what you’re going to get next, just that it’s sure to be tasty. From the country stomp of Leland Sundries to the Keaton Henson-style delicacy of Big Eater, Ben Brock Wilkes’s intricately captivating guitar-based folk to the manic punk rock of Gymshorts, each track is is solid and holds its own amongst the others. Perhaps most interesting is the array of singer-songwriters on show, each of whom craft a bold or heartfelt story in their own way, such as this gem by Bea Troxel.

There are so many reasons to buy this album. First of all, 48 great songs for just ten dollars is nothing short of a steal. The artists we’re not familiar with just serve to highlight the diversity on show, and make us want to spend an entire week checking out back catalogues. And of course, most importantly, you’ll be supporting a really, really good cause. So what are you waiting for?

So Many Singing is out now and you can get it from the Ruination Record Co. Bandcamp page.

It’s that time of year again, time to think about our favourite songs of 2016. Below are sixty of the tracks that stood out alongside our pick of the best lines and lyrics. It gets a bit (extremely) long, so feel free to scroll to the bottom where we’ve collected the tracks into a handy 8tracks playlist. Or perhaps read the entire thing as some experimental poem.

And the usual disclaimer applies, there were too many great tunes to include them all, so treat this more as a selection rather than a comprehensive round-up of the year. Enjoy.
