Following on from their album This Is Not Your Fault, self-described feudal rock outfit Green Gardens are releasing a series of new singles via Tiny Library Records. Their debut “Combin[ed] swaying, laidback harmonies with fuzzy guitars and an almost Medieval preoccupation with heavy themes and gothic imagery,” as we put it back in 2023, and first new single ‘Year of Love’ saw the Leeds four-piece evolve this style, preserving the ambition and thematic depth but, as we described in February, “swapping out some of the grand scale in favour of increased intimacy.”

Now Green Gardens are back with ‘Ghost of a Tree’, another track which further solidifies this change. While This Is Not Your Fault displayed a certain level of spareness within its evocative sound, the latest track highlights the wider palette of their new material. Lo-fi guitars conjure a soundscape akin to those of The Microphones, while the insistent drum beat builds in intensity as the vocals rise across the track, embodying the spirit of a band who make no distinction between the intimate and the sublime. Indeed, such a balance between mundane human experience and something far larger and sweeping sits at the heart of the track, positioning an individual’s loves and losses within an almost geolgical span of time.

“’Ghost of a Tree’ feels to me as a layering of things, like sedimentary rock or bodies trapped in bogs,” as vocalist and bassist Jacob Cracknell explains. “I like seeing time illustrated so bluntly by those things and sometimes that can hit you hard in their rigidity. They don’t tell you that winter can drag its feet, they just show years pass all the same. I heard someone on the radio recently talking about how they can tell when solar flares happened centuries ago due to the rings in trees and I sometimes wonder if my head when I sleep is laying where one of those trees was swelling and growing. These things make me feel significant, part of it all.”

All The Pretty Horses – Frances

Last week, New Haven, Connecticut band All The Pretty Horses released a new album, Witches Up No Mountain Switches Down No Valley, on Candlepin Records. Led by Austin Travers, the band craft slowcore-inflected bedroom pop that is equally comfortable in an intimate hush as it is in triumphant noise. Described as a love letter to cat Franny (AKA the Frances of the title), the record’s second track is a good introduction, moving from near-whispered vocals and shambling percussion into something joyously clamorous, all smashed cymbals and rousing guitar. It’s also charmingly sincere, taking the conventions of a standard love song and framing around not another human but a beloved pet. “When Frances meets me in my backyard,” Traver sings, “this song will fill her heart, her eyes stare into mine as I reach the chorus line.”

Cali Bellow – LFG!!!! (i just died)

Ever find yourself wondering what would happen if you took some of the early 2000s’ biggest musical styles and shoved them into a blender? Say, punk rock from the likes of Rancid and commercial pop from Spice Girls, NSYNC and Aqua? Well, ponder no further, because Cali Bellow has shared ‘LFG!!!! (i just died)’, the latest single from upcoming genre-bending album Ciao Bella. The single combines all those sensibilities and more. As we wrote in August, the album is inspired by everything from Dark Souls, The Muppets, Ursula Le Guinn and Joanna Russ, and the new single shows just how idiosyncratic and infectious a sound such a wide palette can create.

Ciao Bella is out on the 25th October and you can pre-order it now from Bandcamp.

Carpet – Soft and Hidden

Carpet is the solo recording project of Rob Slater, a Leeds-based artist perhaps best known for his work as a musician and recording engineer at Greenmount Studios. Slater has played in a myriad of bands—from Thank and Mi Mye to Post War Glamour Girls and Crake, as well as noisy punk outfit The Spills—though Carpet sees him go back to the beginning to reclaim the lo-fi sensibilities which first sparked his imagination in his youth. With EP Fruit coming soon via Launchpad+, Slater has unveiled single ‘Soft and Hidden’. A song which lives up to its title with its hushed and intimate sound, and serves as the ideal introduction to a release concerned with mining life for those small, fond moments.

Fruit is out on the 1st November via Launchpad+.

Clem Snide – Free

Oh Smokey, the tenth full-length from Eef Barzelay’s Clem Snide, finds a songwriter at something of an inflection point. With break-ups putting an end to long-term relationships both personal and professional, Barzelay left his home of Nashville after twenty years and set about searching for the next step without quite knowing what that might even look like. It’s therefore unsurprising the album is preoccupied with the unknown, a collection of “slow, sad songs about God and death” as Barzelay himself puts it which reflects on life’s ups and downs with a mix of empathy, wry realism and hope that only experience can bring. Single ‘Free’ shows the record’s compassionate tone, with Josh Kaufman of Bonny Light Horseman helping elevate the Clem Snide sound into some of its warmest, richest territory to date.

Oh Smokey is out on the 27th September and you can pre-order it now.

Dorio – Drive / Last Day of Summer

Recording under the moniker Dorio, Texas-based multi-instrumentalist, producer and songwriter Chad Doriocourt makes what we’ve described previously as “vivid, inquisitive songs that balance an easy-spirited energy with an underlying empathy for the human experience.” Released via Earth Libraries, new double single The Drive Collection sees Dorio continue to experiment with the pop genre, drawing the audience in with laidback simplicity and catchy earworms. Which isn’t to say there’s no substance under the surface. ‘Drive’ juxtaposes its sunny rhythm with doubt and nostalgic yearning, while the ‘Last Day of Summer’ offers an idiosyncratic snapshot of summer romance.

max garcía conover – sue and buz catch up during fireworks

One of the most prolific and consistently interesting songwriters working today, max garcía conover has made a name with an emotive brand of folk which pairs lyrical dexterity with an earnest immediacy. New single ‘sue and buz catch up during fireworks’ captures the style perfectly, a song which unspools like long-held thoughts suddenly released, its verses dense with words but entirely natural in flow. “I wrote [the song] after spending the Fourth of July with family and friends, watching fireworks and repeatedly having the same conversation about the calamities of this country, its role in the world and the futurelessness we felt,” Conover explains. “Lot of that has since been put into a somewhat different light and I think the song landed somewhere else too, moving beyond despair without shying away from it.”

‘sue and buz catch up during fireworks’ is out now via streaming services.

Slark Moan – Nervous Breakdown

“Oozes calm confidence and newfound wisdom [even] as life’s many emotions threaten to burst from the seams.” So we wrote of single ‘Dollhouse Heart’ from Slark Moan‘s upcoming EP, The Return of Guitar Music. The project is the alter ego of New York-based artist Mark Sloan—someone who has worked with the likes of Torres, Margo Price, Erin Rae, and SG Goodman—and provides space to utilise an expertise in craft to explore personal uncertainties. Latest track ‘Nervous Breakdown’ is no different, effortlessly blending genres to recreate an experience of feeling anything but effortless. “When I wrote the song, I was having a hard time trusting myself, and experiencing anxiety around choices I had made and uncertainty about where I needed to go,” Sloan explains. “I felt like I was always playing catch up to where I needed to be, like I had just arrived at a party just as everyone else was mapping the train ride home.” Watch the video directed by Evan Murray below:

The Return of Guitar Music is out on the 25th October.

Steve Slagg – The Newest Soil

“I spread my father’s ashes in the winter / With my brothers and my sister.” So opens ‘The Newest Soil’, opener and lead single from Steve Slagg’s latest album, I Don’t Want to Get Adjusted to This World. The record sees Missouri–born, Chicago-based songwriter place personal human experience within the wider patterns of the natural world, not only to reposition death as just another part of the living cycle, but also interrogate the ways in which our current actions might impinge on this order of things. As the opening suggests, ‘The Newest Soil’ begins this with the most intimate of subjects, describing how Slagg and his family spread his father’s ashes upon receiving his remains after a period in which his body had been donated to science.

My daddy had a body but he freed it
He knew he wouldn’t need it
At least for the next couple thousand years
This side of the veil of tears
Content he was investing in sequoias
Letting creation enjoy us

We first wrote about Nashville duo Angel Saint Queen back last summer, describing single ‘Diable Lake’ as “a track which highlights the duo’s bittersweet tone, capturing a sadness for leaving and excitement for what comes next.” Latest single ‘You Were There’ is no less conflicted in its tone, evoking the strange blend of sadness and relief left in the wake of a break-up. Though sound’s raw energy embraces the emotion wholeheartedly, building from restrained beginnings into a blaze of feeling. One last conflagration at the end of a fiery relationship before the new dawn arrives.

bugcatcher – Desert

The recording project of Rochester‘s Jake Denning and a variety of friends, Bugcatcher operates within the slacker end of the alt-country spectrum, though crafts its DIY aesthetic with a precise hand. With an album coming soon, the outfit have released new single ‘Desert’, a song which both serves as an ode to the titular landscape and a search for meaning within an otherwise barren milieu. “I’m going across the desert / I’ll find the holy land myself,” Denning sings, buoyed by the understated rhythm of the sound. “I’m going across the desert / Got my soul for all my wealth.”

Running across the desert
The walls of Jordan are calling me
Going across the desert
Where dinosaur bones are buried in sleep

C.J. Red Mouth – Red Line

With EP Greenhouse on the horizon, C.J. Red Mouth (AKA Durham, North Carolina songwriter C.J. Yang) has unveiled brand new single, ‘Red Line’. The EP centres on the search from freedom within restrictive systems and relationships, and the single typifies the building catharsis which results. A reflection on an old commute, the slow creeping sound evokes the grimy dark of the Boston subway with guitar from June Isenhart (Miss Bones). The track gathers momentum as though quite literally barrelling toward the light at the end of the tunnel, culminating in an ecstatic finale complete with primal screaming.

Scream over the roaring dark
Scream until I hear myself

Daneshevskaya – Somewhere in the Middle

When Anna Daneshevskaya Beckerman took her Russian-Jewish middle name as the moniker for her songwriting project, she did so with significant intention. Daneshevskaya is also the surname of her grandmother, a poet who helped to cultivate her granddaughter’s creative sensibilities, and ultimately served as great inspiration for Beckerman’s own voice. In this way, Daneshevskaya represents a continuation of her grandmother’s vocation, though one processed through Beckerman’s own distinctive eye for detail, spinning off from poetry into vivid indie rock. Released to celebrate signing with Winspear and an imminent tour supporting Black Country, New Road, new single ‘Somewhere in the Middle’ is the ideal introduction for the uninitiated. A curious, searching song which broaches the subject of identity from an unguarded, almost child-like perspective. “My grandma had two sisters and her parents would say ‘Anita has the looks, Miriam has the books, and Gloria has the charm’,” Beckerman explains. “I used to think about which one I would want to be. I never questioned having to choose.” Watch the video by Mia Duncan below:

Dustin Mayle – Saturn’s Last Ring

Ohio songwriter Dustin Mayle recently released latest album Dear Loretta, a collection of songs which fall into the DIY folk tradition but nevertheless achieve a tangible richness despite their lo-fi leanings. Take single ‘Saturn’s Last Ring’, its intimate acoustic style periodically coalescing into something bigger and bolder before unwinding to its former state just as quickly. Mayle’s vocals add an opaque lyricism, nodding towards the mythic undertones of Jason Molina or Adrienne Lenker, catching onto a repeated refrain as the instrumentation swells, as though having tapped into some kind of incantation.

Hannah Cameron – Smells Like Leaving

Later this year, Naarm / Melbourne singer-songwriter Hannah Cameron will release Holding Pattern, her third studio album. Recorded with producer Matt Redlich in his studio alongside longtime collaborators Luke Hodgson (bass) and Leigh Fisher (drums), the album was written largely on baritone guitar. This is immediately apparent on latest single ‘Smells Like Leaving’, a sombre slow burner that details a post-breakup road trip with wistful pedal steel and evocative lyrics that read like staccato poetry. Watch the very apt video, shot by Cameron herself, below:

The blink and dash
The petty cash
The cigarette that’s burned to ash
Smells like leaving

Laura Zarougian – Cairo

Self-described as “one part Armenian cowgirl and one part indie rock,” the music of Laura Zarougian draws on everything from mystical desert rock to the wistful classics of Emmylou Harris and Neil Young in order to tell the story of her forebears. New single ‘Cairo’ applies this to the city of its title, casting Egypt as a distant, almost mythical place, one constructed from old tales and holding secrets too. “My father was born and raised in Cairo, Egypt,” Zarougian explains. “What I know of Cairo is from the stories—the ones my father told me, and the ones that were withheld.”

We don’t have the money to bring his body up the Nile
you will marry an older man, remember to smile
Cairo, you’re a gilded frame,
yeah you’ve got the man beguiled
we’re headed on an aeroplane
we won’t see you for a while

I can tell you’re hiding something,
look at you I know you’re bluffing

Nymphlord – Bougainvillea

A combination of “radio-ready pop hooks” and “a ferocious feminist punk energy,” that’s how we described the music of Nymphlord back in May, along with “an ethereal experimentalism that sees acoustic guitar become otherworldly.” With the release of EP Mothers Cry And Then We Die. fast approaching, the LA-based artist has unveiled a brand new single, ‘Bougainvillea’. A song which blurs hectic energy with a downbeat emotional state to paint a subversive picture of California, drawing equally from retro surf rock and contemporary pop to undermine the sunny stereotypes. A landscape where even the prettiest things have teeth.

Hot day
Muggy day
Same thing
Always
I still feel so cold in LA

Wandering Summer – Show Me The Way

Wandering Summer, the new project of Geddy Laurance (Boyracer, City Yelps, Wonderswan), might be rooted in its Leeds home, but it certainly reaches far and wide to bring the sound to life. An amalgamation of bouncy energy and nostalgic fuzz which owes more to New York noise bands or Californian and Glaswegian pop than anything coming out of Yorkshire. Though as their self-titled EP shows, there’s something particular to the sound that marks its place in the world. An ability to evoke both rolling fields and endless terraced housing, simultaneously embracing its surroundings and dreaming of escape. Single ‘Show Me The Way’ sits at the popppiest end of the Wander Summer style, where wistful fondness is only matched by the sense of eager forward motion.

Aversions – Undecider

Back in December we introduced a new release from East Vancouver post-punks Aversions with single ‘New Whip’, a track which “combine[d] heavyweight riffs, pounded percussion and acerbic vocals to comment on our contemporary moment.” Album You Wanted the Bike has now been released, and as single ‘Undecider’ shows, the record builds upon the promised heft, leaning towards post-hardcore in its pummelling momentum. Written in the chaotic final days of the Trump presidency, it’s a song full of anxiety and latent violence, drawing on a whole host of political and social themes in three and a half minutes of Strummer-esque polit-punk. Check out the video directed by Bruno Trivelli of Death XII:

Green Gardens – This Is My Fault

Leeds art rock outfit Green Gardens have announced a new record, This Is Not Your Fault, with the release of lead single ‘This Is My Fault’. Written in what the band say was “a whirlwind state of inspiration after hearing a Ralph Ineson monologue in which he’s crying and pleading with God to lift an imagined curse from him,” the track is the perfect introduction to the four-piece’s distinctive style, combining swaying, laidback harmonies with fuzzy guitars and an almost Medieval preoccupation with heavy themes and gothic imagery.

This Is Not Your Fault by Green Gardens
This Is Not Your Fault will be released via Come Play With Me Records on 18th August. Pre-order it now from the Green Gardens Bandcamp page.

Gabby’s World – Mussel

When we say Gabby’s World, the project of New York producer and songwriter Gabby Smith, is releasing new album GABBY SWORD this this year on Carrot All Records, we mean year quite literally. Because Smith is unveiling a new song every month, concluding in a full release in December. The final offering of what Smith calls a “triad of gay awakening songs,” latest offering ‘Mussel’ represents the evolution of Smith’s sound and focus since albums like 2015’s O.K. A sincere engagement with what it means to become entwined with another person captured in a style at once physical and ethereal. Watch the video directed by Grace Weir, Barrie Lindsay, and Gabby Smith themselves below:

GABBY SWORD will be released on the 1st December via Carrot All Records.

The Handsome Family – Joseph

Hollow, the forthcoming album from The Handsome Family, originated in a single, unnerving moment shared by Brett and Rennie Sparks during a long winter night. “One night around 4 a.m. Rennie started screaming in her sleep,” Brett explains. “She screamed, ‘Come into the circle Joseph! There’s no moon tonight.’ Scary as it was, I thought, man, that’s a good chorus!” The resulting track ‘Joseph’ develops this moment into a wider context of supernatural foreboding, though within the ominous imagery lies a sense of humanity too. Something nostalgic, a sense of longing, as though within the portents and omens lies the promise of something almost romantic.

It’s 1:49AM
Whisper my name
It’s time to begin

Katherine Kyu Hyeon Lim – As It All Goes By

Starling, the debut album from New York-based composer and violinist Katherine Kyu Hyeon Lim, is both an encapsulation of an individual’s unique understanding of patterns and sound and a testament to the value collaboration. Together with Alfredo Colón (EWI/soprano saxophone) and Kalia Vandever (trombone/fx), Lim creates soundscapes within this spirit—unapologetically singular in its improvisation yet fully dependent on the input of others—with each musician offering one solo track on the album as though to call attention to their individuality before knitting back into the wider sound. Closer ‘As It All Goes By’ plays as the triumphant reunion of the these forces, bringing Lim’s vision to life it all of its detail and wonder. As Joey Chang’s album notes so cogently conclude: “Starling demands the right to self-determine, to be the driver of one’s own story, and to say, without apology, who you are.”

Starling by Katherine Kyu Hyeon Lim
Starling is out now and available from the Katherine Kyu Hyeon Lim Bandcamp page.

Oceanator – Part Time

We’ve written about Elise Okusami’s Oceanator quite a lot over the last few years, taken with her ability to explore pretty deep themes and feelings with fun and energetic indie rock. Co-written with Greg Katz (of Cheekface), new standalone single ‘Part Time’ (out now via Polyvinyl Records) might be the catchiest thing Okusami has made to date. A song about taking small steps toward making positive changes, it captures a sunny 60s rock & roll vibe with springy keys, crisp guitar riffs and the ear-worm chorus of “I know that I can get by if I try /Part time!”

Part Time by Oceanator
‘Part Time’ is out now and you can get it from the Oceanator Bandcamp page.

Patio – En Plein Air

Their first new music since 2019 LP Essentials (which we described as “a knowing smile, a bitter laugh and an angry scream, all at once.”), ‘En Plein Air’ is the new single from New York post-punk trio Patio. Released via the good folks at Fire Talk Records, the song immediately shows that the band have still got it; all negative space, skittering percussion and razor-sharp stabs of guitar. There’s deadpan delivery and wry humour, a luminous vulnerability and even a subtle glow of disco bliss. The band say its a song about “winning a fight, for once, but by proxy—finding the right thing to say, but five years too late.” But as they say, better late than never.

Snake Lips – Smooth Brain No Wrinkles

Portland, Maine punk outfit Snake Lips are set to return with Dice EP later this summer with Repeating Cloud and Totally Real Records, and lead single ‘Smooth Brain No Wrinkles’ invites listeners into the distinctive personality of the project. Because, as the song’s title might suggest, the Snake Lips style combines its compelling energy with a mischievous irony, tapping into a Japandroids-esque momentum to unleash the cathartic potential of self-deprecation. Couple in the FromSoftware-inspired video, and the ‘Smooth Brain No Wrinkles’ will have you dodgerolling right the way through the summer months.

Strawberry Runners – Circle Circle

Their first new release proper since 2017’s superb In the Garden, In the Night, Strawberry Runners have returned with single ‘Circle Circle’ on Duper Moon Records. Lead Emi Night arranged the track alongside Michael Cormier O’Leary, and invited the likes of Benedict Kupstas, Erika Nininger and Stephen Becker to lend their talents. Written during the fevered state of illness, the song taps into the cyclical movements of a troubled mind, though Night pushes through the experience to find solid ground on the other side. As though learning to suspend attempts to fight against exhausting rhythms and instead recognise them as a part of life. What emerges is a sense of stability informed by understanding an compassion, a patience which lessens the impact of any specific discomfort or frustration in favour of a wider curiosity.

Late last year we wrote a little about ‘Human, Dying’, the single from Leeds-based songwriter Niall Summerton, describing how his music “uses a welcoming richness as way into the weightier, darker themes of the human experience.” The song was a preview of Summerton’s forthcoming debut LP on Tiny Library Records which comes out in the spring.

Now Summerton is back with another single from the record, another easygoing pop song that’s packed with lo-fi charm. Recorded on a beat-up homemade guitar he bought from a man in Barnsley during lockdown (an MDF Gibson Les Paul copy built from a kit ordered on eBay that Summerton has christened “The Fibson”), ‘Wish You Could Speak’ is an ode to a canine companion. “‘Wish You Could Speak’ is a ditty-for-the-dog,” Niall Summerton describes. “I think we’d be great friends if we could chat. Sometimes it’s a lot easier to spend time with dogs, they’re less hassle.” As lighthearted as that sounds, as usual with Summerton, the track gently probes at deeper emotions, finding something wistful in life’s small, odd moments.

I only want to be his friend
so I don’t have to pretend
that he knows what’s on my mind

Describing themselves as “a quixotic mix of American post-punk and ’80s post-hardcore,” East Vancouver Aversions combine heavyweight riffs, pounded percussion and acerbic vocals to comment on our contemporary moment. Loosely based on the visual essay About Face by graphic novelist Nate Powell, Aversions say ‘New Whip’ is a song about “how the impact of generational thinking shapes the people we become, and the beliefs and opinions we’ll go to any lengths to enforce…shin[ing] a light on how toxic masculinity is passed down like a gene.”

bedbugz – if i cried, we’d both drown

Back in June we wrote about Canterbury outfit bedbugz and their self-titled single on Tonetic Records. “With its upbeat rhythm and searching vocals, the title track is a bittersweet tale of young love,” we described, “while the b-side sets out further into shoegaze territory.” The debut bedbugz full-length all hail the goblin king! is out later this week, and lead single, ‘if i cried, we’d both drown’, shows how the band have knitted these styles into something of their own. A sound which owes a debt to both bedroom pop and indie rock without quite belonging to either, and offers a delightful blend of sincere emotion and noisy charm. Check out the video by Elliott Sirota-Gott and Tom Postgate below:

bmq – Spontaneity

Tokyo‘s bmq have been at work for fifteen years, though it is only now they are releasing their debut full-length album, Order, Spontaneity and the Body. Drawing inspiration from fields as diverse as post-punk, krautrock, ambient and US indie rock, the record feels like it utilises every month of this gestation period, weaving a finely honed style which constantly tests the line between control and volatility. Take single ‘Spontaneity’, which explores the tension between repetition and change with a simmering energy, unpredictable but always harnessed by an understated confidence. The sound of a band who have spent a long time working out what they want to say and how they want to say it.

Burs – Nearly

Back in September, Toronto‘s Burs released their latest album Holding Patterns, a record which blended various shades of indie, folk and dream pop to allow the quartet to explore a myriad of different moods and settings. What resulted was a rich and often ethereal collection of songs able to change with fluid ease, from the vast, spacious opener ‘The Year Now’ to the urgent ‘Lily’. But it is perhaps latest single ‘Nearly’ which best encapsulates the Burs style. The restrained acoustic intro heralding the considerable chemistry of their dual vocal style, the track slowly deepening with subtle layers of textures and warmth.

Once again I find myself awake inside a dream
Two of us and me, myself and I
Four on the floor, one in the door, a light
Out of purgatory darkly shines

Cat Clyde – Mystic Light

Next February sees the release of Down Rounder, the latest album from Ontario‘s Cat Clyde. Writing back in 2019 we described Clyde’s sound as encompassing “everything from folk and rock to blues and jazz, leading to a sound that swaggers with attitude and smoulders with smoky emotion, and lead single ‘Mystic Light’ suggests the new record builds upon these foundations to offer a fresh vision of the country style. One crafted from personal emotion but imbued with something more ancient and mysterious too. Watch the video directed by Laura-Lynn Petrick below:

Down Rounder is out on the 17th February and you can pre-order it now.

Caroline Strickland – Invoice

New York’s Caroline Strickland unveiled her debut single, ‘Invoice’, this month. A confessional track which pits deceptions and truths against one another, exploring the ways in which honesty can hurt the hardest, and lies hold small victories of their own. All set within a swirling moment of love persisting beyond a relationship, and a job with zero fulfilment or worth, Strickland’s vocals burning with a smoky intensity as she navigates both. “It makes you feel devastated, feel like letting go,” as Strickland’s own perceptive take puts it, “feel like California, feel like rock and roll.” Coming clean might be cathartic, but creating fictions might just be the best escape route.

Maybe with the extra cash
I’ll take a trip Ireland
Pretend my name is Marianne
play some music I can drown in
Remind myself it’s over
Standing on the streets of Sligo

Dignan Porch – Electric Threads

Led by South London’s Joe Walsh, Dignan Porch made a name across the 2010s with a distinctive blend of psych rock and fuzz pop, working with labels such as Captured Tracks and Art Is Hard along the way. With Walsh having now moved to Manchester, next February sees the release of a brand new album Electric Threads, this time a joint release by the stellar trio of Hidden Bay, Repeating Cloud and Safe Suburban Home Records. The title track gives a glimpse into the newest iteration of the project. A combination of earnest emotion and off-kilter playfulness which refuses to recognise any distinction between fun and melancholy.

Electric Threads is out on the 23rd February via Repeating Cloud, Hidden Bay and Safe Suburban Home Records and you can pre-order it now.

Lina K.O. – Two-Player Mode

Brooklyn-based artist Lina K.O. is gearing up to release new EP Earth Apple next month, and the latest single serves as a great introduction to her sound. Falling on the rockier side of what she herself describes as “digitally-infused melancholic indie,” the song combines Bridgers-esque indie folk with a grungy weight to achieve its delightfully ambiguous tone. Where doubt and assurance act as perfect counterbalances against one another, Lina K.O. singing with reflective wisdom even within the confusing immediacy of the moment. Check out the video by Mike White and Lina K.O herself below:

Earth Apple is out on the 13th January and you can pre-order it now.

Luke De-Sciscio – The Tourist

There are prolific songwriters and then there is Luke De-Sciscio. Reaching double figures of full-length albums at only thirty, De-Sciscio has consistently honed his work and challenged prior expectations, forever circling around that elusively perfect way in which to communicate what needs saying. Through a series of highs (e.g. being booked to support the likes of Cat Stevens and Jose Feliciano) and lows (the COVID-induced cancellation of said shows), he has not stopped in this search, and new album if one thing were different, nothing would be the same feels like the closest he’s yet come to reaching that mythical ideal. Take closer ‘The Tourist’, seven minutes plus of stark passion and poignance. The culmination of everything which has been before.

If one thing were different, nothing would be the same by Luke De-Sciscio
if one thing were different, nothing would be the same is out now and available from Bandcamp.

Niall Summerton – Human, Dying

You would be forgiven for taking a quick listen to the work of Leeds-based songwriter Niall Summerton and concluding his work to be that of warm, easy-going assurance. But as the name of new single ‘Human, Dying’ gives away, his work uses this welcoming richness as way into the weightier, darker themes of the human experience. With new album What Am I Made Of? coming soon via Tiny Library Records, the new song offers the perfect example of this style. Confronting the heaviest question of them all, Summerton threads anxieties around mortality into the textures of the everyday, and in doing so not only captures a compassionate view of the subject but also something of its pervasive, ever-present weight.

What Am I Made Of? will be release in April 2023 via Tiny Library Records.

Stella Rose – Angel

Following on from the success of debut single ‘Muddled Man’ a few weeks ago, New York-based singer, poet, and musician Stella Rose has shared brand new track, ‘Angel’, via Kro Records. After the insistent energy of the first single, ‘Angel’ offers an altogether more reflective tone, swapping out the electrified intensity for something slower and richer. What results is a strange ode to melancholy, exploring how sadness can serve as the shadow to highlight the brighter parts of life. The song comes with a video directed by Primordialfreaks, who explains how the film aimed to capture the light and dark of the song. “It’s a sad but also triumphant song, like a celebration of loss and loneliness and how the most difficult things can make life more pure in a strange sort of way.”

‘Angel’ is out now via Kro Records.

Sun Kin – I Know This One

We’ve written a fair bit about Kabir Kumar’s Sun Kin this year, from the upbeat pop of single ‘I Wanna Believe‘ to the deep, thematically rich ambient styles of painting whales part 1 and 2. Somewhere in the mix Kumar found the time to release another single, ‘I Know This One’, ironically a song about the creative frustrations which emerge when you set the bar too high and push every new piece to be a genre-bending prototype. Luckily, there’s an antidote to such a malady—dropping any notions of genius and appreciating the simple joys of life. Namely hanging out with your cat.

i’m always saying
how i can’t behave
right in front of you
there sits a bowl of your food
i poured in the morning
of this blessed day

Back in August we wrote about ‘Sarehole Mill‘, the debut single from EP Wandering Worlds by Birmingham-based artist, composer, producer and singer-songwriter AGAAMA. It was a song, we described, “rooted in physical place but also the psyche of the individuals and collectives with pass through it, carrying with it all those people’s energies and anxieties.” Now out via The state51 Conspiracy, the EP continues this examination of spaces, gradually moving from a place of uncertainty to one of love. With its patient intimacy, closer ‘In This Life’ completes this journey, drawing a line between healing and empowerment, championing the healing of wounds as the path to more fully becoming oneself.

Alexia Avina – Let This Die

Fresh off the back of recent album A Little Older on Lost Map Records, Alexia Avina returns this month with a brand new EP, Crush. Focused on vulnerability and smallness, the previous record probed at tender spots we might usually ignore or protect, choosing to sit and contemplate pain instead. But Crush emerges from the aftermath of this period. A fresh start where new feelings germinate and sprout through the ground. Composed entirely of synths, the result is something freer, more fun, ready to give itself over to joy and desire, even while understanding such emotions might only stay for a fleeting moment. Check out the video for lead single ‘Let This Die’ below, shot, directed and edited by Sara Laufer.

Crush releases on 14th October and is available to pre-order from the Alexia Avina Bandcamp page.

Alicia Clara – I Let My Plant Die

Following last year’s EP Outsider/Unusual, Montreal-based dream pop artist Alicia Clara returns this month with a new four song release. Titled Velveteen, the EP is something of a message to her teenage self, and finds Clara at her most assured, combing confident musicianship with impressionistic and introspective lyrics that display an admirable vulnerability. Latest single ‘I Let My Plant Die’ was written on the pandemic’s one year anniversary and is full of both yearning for “normal” life and gentle self-admonishment for living passively and taking small things for granted. “The inspiration behind the title came from three baby plants I inadvertently let die when I left my apartment to go stay with family outside of Montreal in March 2020, thinking I’d be back in the city come April,” Clara explains. “I recognized a parallel between this and a tendency I have to put off tackling tasks or situations that scare me, thinking time will do the work on its own.” Check out the video directed and shot on the Swiss-French border by Alix Bortoli below:

Brody Price – It Was You

Later this month, Dallas artist Brody Price will release his latest album Win a Trip to Palm Springs! On Niles City Records. Price refers to his style (only semi sarcastically) as “doom country,” a tag which goes some way to capturing the record’s blend of folk, country, noise and sludge. The album’s second single, ‘It Was You’ exists on the gentler end of the spectrum but still captures the wider tension and stormy atmosphere which mirrors the lyrics’ exploration of the turbulence of life. Price is joined by Robert Ellis (piano) and Andy Baxter (vocal harmonies), who together create a folk song that, despite its twang and gentle melodies, actual explores the difficulties we all face and sometimes try to hide. “This song is about being aware of my own internal turmoil and realizing that everyone has the same thing in some form or fashion,” Price explains. “Even if someone may appear to have it all together, you still can’t tell what’s racing through their mind when they lay awake at night.”

Doctor Delia – Whoa

Based in Portland, Oregon, Doctor Delia is a self-described “entity specializing in tinctures, alchemical transubstantiation, and old-time new-time music.” We first featured their work last summer, when we reviewed Parlor Songs, a collaborative album with Mother Juniper that we described as possessing “an intangible sense of homespun communal spirit.” Their latest release is Sunroom Vloop // Whoa, a double single which again takes a traditional instrument (here the violin) and creates something that feels both fresh and somehow timeless. ‘Sunroom Vloop’ is a bright and playful expression of the titular sunroom, all clear warm air and vivid reflections, while ‘Whoa’ is a violin loop altogether more mystical. “If you listen closely you can hear a great Spirit moving through the bones of the violin,” Doctor Delia describes. “It is my spirit; it is more than what I can put into words. So I play.”

Sunroom Vloop // Whoa is out now and available via the Doctor Delia Bandcamp page.

ghost orchard – rest

This November sees the release of rainbow music, the new album from ghost orchard on Winspear. The project of Grand Rapids, Michigan’s Sam Hall, ghost orchard has made its name with a distinctively sincere blend of folk and electronic styles, and their latest record develops this aesthetic further. A picture of calm and patience amid loss, where the quiet stillness holds the latent warmth of things now gone. New single ‘rest’ is the perfect introduction, its palpable, physical details holding something less tangible too. As though the world itself mourns that which is lost, and the correct arrangement of objects might summon it back once more. Watch the video by Nik Arthur below:

like thick smoke fills the room
and brings you back again

Greta O’Leary – Body, Now

Written during an autumnal drive through the mountains of the South Island, ‘Body, Now’ is the latest single from Aotearoa folk artist Greta O’Leary. It’s a delicate, careful track which places the body into this context of the environment, charting its subtle changes in the face of grief in the manner one might watch the seasons pass across a landscape. But for all its isolation and heartbreak, the song emerges as a balm against outside forces. A return to the self as not only a mode of protection, but a way in which to reconnect with the most fundamental of things.

Hang Linton x LeBron Aggressive – SALE

The work of Leeds-based interdisciplinary artist Hang Linton has been described as “a rebellion against clean aesthetics,” his work across music, performance, video and installation inspired by time spent amid countercultural collectives in Berlin. Debut single ‘SALE’ sees Linton enlist the talents of LeBron Aggressive for a synth-based meditation on consumerist culture, the catchy and playful sound simmering underneath sardonic lyrics. Essentially repurposing the strategy of advertisements to send the attack in the opposite direction. A crystal clear message dressed up with shiny adornments. “Discounts on discounts but don’t discount the fact,” as Linton sings. “We bought it all for cheap, with the sweat off someone else’s back.”

Kierst – Phone Call

South Carolina raised, Brooklyn-based songwriter Kierst has a new EP, Thud, coming next month on Sad Club Records, and latest single ‘Phone Call’ sets the tone for the release. A reflection on longing and self-worth which owes as much to Grouper and Mazzy Star as it does contemporary bedroom pop, the intimate vocals and pressing rhythm lifted by an ethereal soundscape, resulting in a mood which transcends the immediate pain for heartbreak. “I think it’s important to know how to sit with yourself, and not depend so much on romantic fulfilment, Kierst explains of the track. “You can only be as good to someone else as you can be to yourself, and the song’s about knowing when to respect that.”

Platonic Sex – Exhausted Competing For You

Meanjin/Brisbane outfit Platonic Sex are gearing up to release a brand new EP this November, and latest single ‘Exhausted Competing For You’ gives further indication of what to expect from the four-piece. The single is a track based around the tensions of a mismatched relationship, where the initial rush of excitement has dissipated and issues of compatibility are brought into relief. The temptation to persevere in the face of such doubts is clear, but struggling to make things work comes at a cost. “It’s exhausting to keep something alive for the sake of fighting for it,” says lead Bridget Brandolini, a realisation which becomes apparent across the song, its energy picking up into an affirming catharsis. Check out the video directed by Bridget Webb below:

‘Exhausted Competing For You’ is out now on all your favourite streaming services.

Puck – Best Friend

Having cut her teeth touring in the bands of SZA, dhruv and Maggie Rogers, Puck might have already announced themselves as keyboardist, but upcoming debut album Best Friend feels like a proper introduction. The record draws upon a childhood immersed in Seattle’s grunge and alt-rock scene but reaches out toward folk and jazz too. A highly personal blend used to conjure the experience of love but also violence, ultimately directing its energies into processing trauma and grief within a society seemingly arranged to reinforce such phenomena. “I wanted it to be catchy enough for the words to sneak under people’s skin,” Puck explains of the title track. “I didn’t really have much music to heal by, so I made some.”

AJ Lambert – Staff of the Flag

We last covered the work of AJ Lambert as part of Bloodslide, an experimental group featuring members of Preoccupations and Protomartyr. But she also records under her own name and has assembled another stellar band for her new album, Dirt Soda. Together with musicians who have played with Joan As Policewoman, Yves Tumor, Dave Harrington and Julia Holter, Lambert uses the record to further her creative, genre-bending style, creating self-described ‘distorted anthems’ which blur the line between reality and dreams.

Lead single ‘Staff of the Flag’ is a great example, based around the notorious stretch of road where James Dean and many others have met their end. “I found it interesting that so many people know that one person who died there, but so many others have met the same fate and go unrecognized except by the people who loved them,” Lambert explains. “The song is about an imaginary woman who, after selling flowers to tourists on their way to the Dean site all day, takes the leftovers to the nearby site where her own loved one died.”

‘Staff of the Flag’ is out now and available via the AJ Lambert on Bandcamp. Dirt Soda is out in July.

CLAMM – Bit Much

Melbourne punks CLAMM say their music is an attempt to “explore the confusion of what it is to be a young person trying to live an honourable life in this fucked up world,” something they achieve by forgoing all restraint and throwing themselves into unrelenting cathartic noise. The band have recently announced their sophomore LP Care on Meat Machine and Chapter Music, a record which promises to be “bigger, louder and darker” than their 2020 debut Beseech Me. This is in part thanks to the fact the band are now a trio, bassist Maisie Everett joining Jack Summers (guitar and vocals) and Miles Harding (drums) to expand CLAMM into what the band say is “its ultimate form.” In anticipation of the new record, they have released lead single ‘Bit Much’, a song about the barrage of bad news that is modern life which ricochets around at typically breakneck speed.

Care will be released on 19th August on Meat Machine (UK, Europe & Asia) and Chapter Music (everywhere else). You can preorder it now from the CLAMM Bandcamp page.

Friendship – Ugly Little Victory

Fresh from signing with Merge Records, Philadelphia‘s Friendship have unveiled a brand new single, ‘Ugly Little Victory’. Those familiar with the band’s live set might recognise the tune from on the road, but even those who don’t will find an uncanny sense of familiarity. Something in the way the band collects details and sensations within their work, bringing to life quietly devastating circumstances which feel halfway our own. Songs about nothing and everything all at once.

Katie Bejsiuk – Onion Stalk

After years heading up free cake for every creature and later recording as Katie Bennett, Katie Bejsiuk has adopted her father’s original surname for brand new album The Woman on the Moon, out next month on Double Double Whammy. With its hushed acoustic style, lead single ‘Onion Stalk’ blends childlike wonder with reflective melancholy, though as it develops an electric edge emerges, braiding these twin threads into something determined and defiant.

The Woman on the Moon is out via Double Double Whammy on the 24th June and you can pre-order it now from the Katie Bejsiuk Bandcamp page. As a related aside (Weekly Reading, if you will), Lithub recently published Bennett’s fantastic essay on Joan Vollmer Burroughs which is very much worth your time.

Langkamer – Soul Bucket

Bristol‘s Langkamer have made a name with a sound that’s hard to nail down. A bit of folk, a bit of indie rock, a ton of playful personality. Following on from the brightly boisterous ‘Teeth’, they have returned with a brand new single ‘Soul Bucket’ on Breakfast Records. Taking a slightly more subdued, reflective air, the track faces up to the realities of growing older by leaning into the contemplative folk end of their sensibilities, though their distinctively mischievous side isn’t far below the surface. “‘Soul Bucket’ is an ode to ageing,” the band explain. “To realising that the time is rolling away from you and you can’t catch up no matter how fast you run.” Check out the video by JJ Jarman below:

Mote – Defying Ephemera

Having met at Binghamton University and won the hearts of the local scene, New York‘s Mote have just released their debut record, Defying Ephemera. Though not strictly a concept record, there’s a narrative arc from love to lonely longing across the twelve tracks, the nasty dose of heartbreak smack bang in the middle bringing a conflicted, anguished mood. The lead single and title track opens the record, existing before the worst has come to pass, but the growing chaos which envelops the spoken vocals hints at the turmoil to come.

Sunflower Thieves – Lichtenberg Figures

The project of Leeds-based childhood friends Amy Illingworth and Lily Sturt-Bolshaw, Sunflower Thieves make emotive music that draws on the ethereal tones of dream pop and the lyrical honesty of folk. Late last month they released their latest EP Someone To Be There For, a collection of five songs that captures nurturing warmth and bracing honesty which mark them as songwriters to watch. Perhaps the standout is ‘Lichtenberg Figures’, a song which celebrates the hard-won beauty of overcoming trauma through the metaphor of the tree-like pattern of lesions sometimes left on the skin when a person is hit by lightning.

You were struck by lightning walking in the rain to your car
and when you woke the lightning left a beautiful scar.

In blurring the divide between slacker rock and dream pop, Leeds based quintet Van Houten weave ethereal soundscapes that retain a human core, grounded by the honest writing of lead Louis Sadler. The effect is a clever one, allowing the band to fully inhabit a slightly surreal world of languid tones and washed out colours while maintaining a connection to reality, the lyrics acting as a thread that we can follow back to the recognisable, the relatable and, at times, the surprisingly dark.

The band credit producer Martin Smith as a key figure in the development of such a style, his talents allowing them to embrace a new, rich aesthetic on their forthcoming self-titled debut. “When making the album, we were able to finally sculpt the vintage Hi-Fi sound that we have always been searching for but have never been able to achieve,” Sadler explains. “The title is Van Houten because this is the first work we have created that truly represents our band. This new sound is the true sound of our band.”

Released today, lead single ‘Moon’ is here to whet your appetites for the record. The album’s opener, the song is an ideal introduction to the Van Houten spirit, kicking into easy rhythms that shift and shimmer in languorous eddies. When Sadler’s vocals emerge, their smooth tones are entirely in keeping with this style, crooned across a field of heat haze and mirages. However, the longing that becomes clear in the promises of the lyrics is in part based around looking past such illusions, trying (and failing) to seize the moment and let a loved one know just how much they mean to you before they inevitably leave.

“Moon is essentially a very personal love song,” Sadler says. “It explores the fleeting qualities of love and the desperation of wanting to give somebody anything and everything. The line ‘You always leave so soon’ describes how a crush or loved one always seems to leave before the one chasing has chance to show the full potential of their affection.”

Van Houten is out via Clue Records on the 13th September and you can pre-order it now. The band are playing a couple of dates in the UK later this summer, and you can find them below.

Trust Fund is the project of Ellis Jones, who, along with various friends, has made a name for himself over the last few years with his unique brand of lo-fi indie pop. Trust Fund’s latest album We have always lived in The Harolds was released here in the UK last month, but it’s also getting a US cassette release courtesy of our friends It Takes Time Records. The album, recorded at Jones’s home in Leeds, was initially released as something of a surprise, appearing immediately online without any of the drip-feeding that now seems to come with even the smallest labels. The move said a lot about the project, in terms of how Jones has always done things his own way, but also how far Trust Fund have come, the fact that there is a big enough fan base to allow an instantaneous self-release to been seen and heard and bought.

We have always lived in The Harolds is quieter than you may expect if you’ve checked out Trust Fund previously. The DIY recording process creating something more personal and less brashly confident than the full-band indie pop of the last release (it’s certainly closer in style to No one’s coming for us than Seems Unfair). The album opens with ‘wwsd’, which glides into being with the spooky sound of a far-off car alarm, before crunching into life with guitar and shambling drums and Jones’s signature vocal delivery. The song segues into ‘Would that be an adventure?’, with its subtly auto-tuned vocals and strange dream-like intermissions of nostalgic pop, just one of the album’s many eccentric touches. ‘melody gloucester pegasus’ is tense and taut, while ‘Together’ is as bright and sunny a pop song about wanting to die every weekday could hope to be. At least we have the weekends for “special time together”, right? As if sensing our need for a pick-me-up, the next track, ‘Crab line’, sends a beam of triumphant energy. The instrumentation initially sounds jittery and high-strung, but Jones’s vocals drive it into a catchy melody, producing a joyous pop song.

“when the winter gets cold enough
it makes you feel so thin
when the wind blows bold enough
you feel like this like you’re made of nothing
me and my baby that’s all we want
me and my baby want only this
me and my baby that’s all we want
all we want is to not exist”

‘¬¬¬creepin’ is subdued and echoey and the Frogger-referencing ‘Like a frog’ is a soft and down-tempo indie pop song that has it’s own understated lo-fi bedroom-recorded lushness. ‘Leaving you behind’ takes a little while before blooming into catchy indie rock, before ‘whalith’ closes proceedings, a soft and directly lovesick track which sees Jones declare his love for a significant other.

“what were we searching for
a life without metaphor
i’m ready to find
you sweeping all doubts aside”

We have always lived in The Harolds is an album that rather nicely illustrates what Trust Fund are all about. Free from the input of a label, and mostly completed by Jones alone, the album feels like a true representation of the project. It straddles the line between lo-fi and polished, weird and catchily infectious, all the while maintaining a silvery core of introspection and melancholy.

You can get the album from the Trust Fund Bandcamp page. You Americans be sure to grab a tape from It Takes Time Records.
