A song fitting for a project built around Hedin&#8217;s desire to connect with heritage, be that the ancestors who walked the land before him or the very earth of <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/Sweden">Sweden</a> itself. Det Hemliga Folket is &#8220;a re-connection with the wild north inside me and the ancestral blues that whispers within the sound of the earth, the whispers in my head of the very fabric of the land,&#8221; he explains. &#8220;I hear the ocean and the silence of the forests that raised me like mothers and fathers. The darkness that&#8217;s been a part of me is an engine that never can die. <h3 style="text-align: center;">ERIKA DOHI &#8211; Myth of Tomorrow</h3>
<p>Later this week, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/Osaka">Osaka</a>-born, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/new-york">New York</a>-based composer and pianist <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/erika-dohi/">Erika Dohi</a> will release <em>Myth of Tomorrow</em>, a brand new full-length via <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/switch-hit-records/">Switch Hit Records</a> and <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/figureight-records/">Figureight Records</a>. Described as &#8220;a sonic meditation on catastrophe, resilience, and rebirth,&#8221; the album builds upon the eclectic style of predecessor <em>I, Castorpollux</em> to push Dohi&#8217;s sound in new directions, utilising a variety of sensibilities from dance, jazz, ambient and classical modes to create soundscapes as singular as they are striking. The record draws its title from the Taro Okamoto’s <a href="https://taro-okamoto.or.jp/en/asunoshinwa/">mural of the same name</a>, and the title track draws the clearest line between the two artworks. A song concerned with the endless cycles of existence, not only asking what they demand of us but also how we might find peace and healing within the recurring patterns of life. &#8220;For me, the song reflects on resilience and regeneration in the face of life’s relentless cycles,&#8221; Dohi explains. &#8220;Through its lyrics, I explore the contradictions of modern existence—the struggle to find happiness in repetition, the unspoken burdens we carry, and the illusions we chase in pursuit of fulfillment. Yet, amidst all of this, the song also asks us to pause, breathe, and reconnect with the beauty in the everyday: the sun rising without fail, the moon’s quiet waning, the resilience of a dandelion growing through cracks in asphalt. It’s a song of introspection that invites us to confront our disconnection and rediscover what moves us to live and hope for tomorrow.&#8221;</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Haley Heynderickx &amp; Max García Conover &#8211; Fluorescent Light</h3>
<p><a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/haley-heynderickx/">Haley Heynderickx</a> and <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/max-garcia-conover/">Max García Conover</a> are no strangers to collaboration, the pair releasing <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2018/11/30/haley-heynderickx-max-garcia-conover-among-horses-iii/"><em>Among Horses III</em></a> back in 2018 on <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/son-canciones/">Son Canciones</a> and the anniversary single &#8216;<a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2023/11/27/weekly-listening-november-2023-4/">How Does the Horse Go Home?</a>&#8216; five years later. &#8220;The genius of both Heynderickx and Conover is their ability to draw a relatable emotion from their subject matter,&#8221; we wrote, &#8220;tapping into a universal sense of nostalgia and longing and presenting it back to us, shaping and polished into its most gleaming form.&#8221; Based on the life and work of Woodie Guthrie and this time to be released via <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/fat-possum-records/">Fat Possum</a>, <em>What of Our Nature </em>is a brand new full-length by the pair which builds upon the chemistry they&#8217;ve crafted over the years to offer songs as inventive and heartfelt as anything they&#8217;ve released to date. The track showed the album&#8217;s nuanced nature, the sound following &#8220;a newly nostalgic direction, full of dreamlike longing and evening colours,&#8221; as we put it, yet one which possesses &#8220;something strange and quietly unsettling, full of the mysterious allure which Kramies has always offered.&#8221; With the record out now, the title track has been unveiled as a new single, the cornerstone of the record which embodies all of its richness and duality. <p>Following on from 2024 album <em>Langzamer</em>, as well as lead Josh Jarman&#8217;s solo release under the moniker <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/classic-trucks/">Classic Trucks</a> earlier this year, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/bristol">Bristol</a>&#8216;s <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/langkamer/">Langkamer</a> are preparing to release their fourth album in as many years. Coming early next January via <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/Breakfast-Records">Breakfast Records</a>, <em>No</em> was recorded in the Spanish hills at Zarzalico and carries some of the Mediterranean clarity in its sound, creating enough space to examine the full scale of our frenetic contemporary life. Lead single &#8216;Crows&#8217; gives a taste of what to expect, a track fired by nervous energy and unanswered questions, barrelling forwards despite its clear desire to stop and change. “&#8217;Crows&#8217; is a song about the crazy shapes we contort ourselves into trying to create art in the era of late-stage capitalism,&#8221; the band explain. &#8220;Working a thousand jobs. <h3 style="text-align: center;">Orchid Mantis &#8211; Strange Heaven</h3>
<p>Change and evolution are key features in the career of any artist, especially one as prolific as <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/orchid-mantis/">Orchid Mantis</a>. &#8220;Over the years, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/atlanta">Atlanta</a>, Georgia-based artist Thomas Howard has used the [project] as a space in which to explore a host of musical styles,&#8221; we wrote <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2025/03/18/weekly-listening-march-2025-3/">back in March</a>, &#8220;each release responding to and building upon that which came before it so that the work was always in flux.&#8221; <em>In Airports</em>, the second Orchid Mantis full-length to be released this year, not only continues this process but meditates on the very meaning of such an endeavour. What does it mean to commit to a life making music? And how might it help chart all that is lost and preserved over the years? The result feels like the culmination of everything Orchid Mantis has done to date, returning to old styles and techniques as readily is it breaks new ground, and thus becomes something of a mission statement for the project. A declaration of intent to give the past and future equal billing, full of the spirit which has been pieced together over the years yet open to possibility. New single and closer &#8216;Strange Heaven&#8217; expresses the sentiment most succinctly:</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">The Planes &#8211; Tear the World Apart (MFLB Version)</h3>
<p>We last wrote about <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/new-york">New York</a> indie rock outfit <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/the-planes/">The Planes</a> back in 2023, describing &#8216;First Breath After Mask&#8217;, a single from EP <em>Dark Matter Recycling Co.</em>, as &#8220;a song at once depressed and affirming. As though from with its own inertia stirs some last attempt at catharsis.&#8221; Now the band are back with <em>Motel For Lightning Bug</em>, a brand new release which sees them continue their own idiosyncratic mix of rock and pop influences, harnessing some of the energy of their livewire shows without losing a sense of emotion or reflection. It is fitting that opener and single &#8216;Tear the World Apart (MFLB Version)&#8217; is a reworking of a fan favourite from live shows, what the band call label as &#8220;slacker indie rock bubblegum&#8221; which deals with loss with equal parts wistfulness and wry humour, not to mention an infectious sense of momentum which only builds across the length of the track.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Sister Wanzala &#8211; Now You&#8217;re Mine</h3>
<p>Back in 2022 we heralded the apparently triumphant return of London sibling trio <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/sister-wanzala/">Sister Wanzala</a>, singles &#8216;<a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2022/05/20/sister-wanzala-perfume/">Perfume</a>&#8216; and &#8216;<a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2022/08/29/weekly-listening-august-2022-5/">Top Drawer</a>&#8216; appearing after a three-year hiatus which started soon after the release of 2019 EP <em>The Circus </em>and signalling an almost reluctant determination to pursue making music in an age which can often appear to be designed to convince you otherwise. Fittingly, both tracks featured dreams as a central motif, though rather than some inspirational battle cry to all those who which to pursue their passions, they either described these dreams as full of disaster (&#8216;Top Drawer&#8217;) or declared a desire to have them removed entirely (&#8216;Perfume&#8217;). You can already guess what happened next. The return was a false dawn, Sister Wanzala retreated into their shells again, only&#8230; what&#8217;s that? A new track, two years later? Another self-deprecating press release declaring their career a failure and promising more of the same? You&#8217;ll understand if we don&#8217;t call &#8216;Now You&#8217;re Mine&#8217; anything more than another small blip in might otherwise be a pristine half-decade of silence, but as soon as the jazzy opening unfurls with all its nineties daytime TV swagger and the cold groove settles with effortless cool, you&#8217;ll be glad you got anything from the project, no matter how alluring and brief.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It is fair to say multi-instrumentalist and composer <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/patrick-shiroishi">Patrick Shiroishi</a> is unafraid to broach big themes. Previous releases like <em>Descension</em>, <em>Hidemi </em>and <em>I was too young to hear silence</em> have all in one way or another revolved around the internment of Japanese-Americans, but new full-length <em>Forgetting is Violence</em> takes things even further. Forthcoming this September via <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/american-dreams">American Dreams Records</a>, the album considers, amongst other things, racism in a wider sense. An attempt to wrestle with the phenomenon as both a historical fact and contemporary shame, and furthermore one which confronts the impossibility of living in this world without participating in its ongoing function. Acknowledging that if the desire to eradicate another is something allowed into the world, then no aspect of a culture can be said to exist above or beyond it. A truth more apparent now than ever as genocide is televised in real time.</p>
<p>The fittingly titled lead single &#8216;There is no moment in my life in which this is not happening&#8217; offers a window into the poignant and evocative sound which results, Patrick Shiroishi building out his saxophone-based style with effects pedals, field recordings and vocals. <em>Forgetting is Violent </em>also features an impressive cast of collaborators including Aaron Turner (SUMAC, ISIS), Gemma Thompson (Savages), Faith Coloccia (Mamiffer) and Mat Ball (BIG|BRAVE), and here it is otay::onii who joins the track. Known as part of Dent and Elizabeth Colour Wheel as well her solo work, the Chinese artist has made a name with songs both striking and challenging and her vocals are no less attention grabbing here. The plaintive cry which seems to emanate from somewhere deep within the track, as though Shiroishi is summoning those who suffered before him.</p>

Consisting of duo Maren Day and Morgan Kavanagh, the project uses a timeless, sincere folk style to bring such themes to life, and new album <em>Affinity</em>, coming this summer on <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/ghost-mountain-records">Ghost Mountain Records</a>, looks to develop this further. The lead single and title track offers the first glimpse into the release. A considered, spare song which nevertheless glows with a modest yet persistent warmth. &#8220;No such thing as an excess of gentleness,&#8221; goes the instructive opening line, &#8220;at least not for me.&#8221;</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Bonniesongs &#8211; Olive Oil</h3>
<p>&#8220;Olive oil is good for me / Nourishing deep within my skin / Fills me up with vitamins / Makes me feel so comforted.&#8221; So sings Irish-born, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/australia">Australian</a>-based multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Bonnie Stewart, AKA <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/bonniesongs">Bonniesongs</a>, on new single &#8216;Olive Oil&#8217;. The latest single from <em>Strangest Feeling</em>, the new Bonniesongs LP forthcoming this summer on Impressed Recordings, the song introduces the record&#8217;s sense of nuance. It blends warm dream pop with something weightier and strange, all delivered with a playful spirit. “I wrote ‘Olive Oil’ while visiting Wellington, New Zealand. I had recently started a game with friends where we list our top five favourite things,&#8221; Stewart explains. &#8220;Olive oil, ocean, sunshine are some things that bring me joy. I wanted a happy, light-hearted song.” And while light-hearted the song might be, it is anything but twee, the Bonniesongs sound far more ambitious and conflicting to fall into such a trap.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Chrome Harvest &#8211; Hex Whoever</h3>
<p>Originating as project between Chris Jerwin (guitar, piano, vocals) and Ben Wellman (banjo, guitar, vocals) and later expanding into more of a collective, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/chrome-harvest">Chrome Harvest</a> is a <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/lethbridge">Lethbridge</a>, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/alberta">Alberta</a>-based band which sits at the experimental end of indie rock. After winning praise with 2023 debut <em>Sun-Circuit</em>, Chrome Harvest have recently released a self-titled follow-up, Evan Brownlee (drums, percussion), Keilan Hakstol (drums, percussion), Connor McGinnis (bass), Ray Wong (saxophone) and Cori Campbell (saxophone) joining the fold to push the project further. Standout &#8216;Hex Whoever&#8217; hints at both the richness of the resulting sound and its emotional resonance, unfurling as a raggedy, quivering folk song before blooming into something lush and affirming and packed with raw energy.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Far Caspian &#8211; An Outstretched Hand / Rain From Here To Kerry</h3>
<p>The recording project of <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/ireland">Irish</a> songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer Joel Johnston, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/far-caspian">Far Caspian</a> has established itself through a number of releases since its inception in 2020. Namely debut full-length <em>Ways To Get Out</em> and follow-up The <em>Last Remaining Light</em>, which employed everything from indie folk to late 90s/early 00s alt sensibilities to offer a distinctively personal sound, full of unguarded sincerity and searching emotion. Set for release via Johnston&#8217;s own <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/tiny-library-records">Tiny Library Records</a> this July, new album <em>Autofiction</em> is both a continuation of this process and something of a soft reset. An opportunity to return the Far Caspian project back to the simple joy of making music after years of challenges both artistic and personal. Latest single &#8216;An Outstretched Hand / Rain From Here To Kerry&#8217; is an indication the record lives up to its title, finding Johnston as his most diaristic as he details an experience driving all night across Ireland after a failed attempt to climb Carrauntoohil in 2014.</p>

<p>Something of a folk supergroup, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/kissing-other-ppl">kissing other ppl</a> sees indie folk duo Viv &amp; Riley join forces with songwriter Rachel Baiman, and the project&#8217;s self-titled debut introduces what to expect. Released via Peacedale Records, the album is a collection of covers taken from across a wide spectrum of acts—Lennon Stella, Songs: Ohia, Wilco and Joan Armatrading to name a few. “It just kind of happened that we were talking about the same music. It felt like fun coincidences, these artists across a lot of different realms and times,&#8221; Riley explains. &#8220;So it just then seemed like we could make a record with these great songs, us reinterpreting them, have them all feel of a piece, even though the songs are from different eras and the original recordings are very different.” Listen to single &#8216;Where&#8217;d All The Time Go&#8217; now, with kissing other ppl taking Dr Dog&#8217;s original and adding a timeless folk style.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Merzbow &#8211; Sedonis A</h3>
<p>Renowned avant garde sound artist Masami Akita has been recording under the moniker <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/merzbow">Merzbow</a> for going on half a century. The <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/tokyo">Tokyo</a>-based musician has built a vast, varied oeuvre which reimagines the possibilities of noise. But while Akita&#8217;s back catalogue is already far deeper than most artists could even dream, he continues to create and release new music, and new album <em>Sedonis</em> shows there is no let up in his ambition. Merzbow&#8217;s debut with Chicago imprint <em>Signal Noise</em>, the record uses a computer, modular electronics and homemade instruments to create a sound inspired by the kaiju Barunga from sixties TV series <em>Ultra Q</em>. Single &#8216;Sedonis A&#8217; is suggestive of the scale of the release, a cut as harsh and sublime as any giant creature hell-bent on making Tokyo its own.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Rebecca Schiffman &#8211; Little Mr. Civility</h3>
<p>&#8220;Is pure feeling possible? Can we ever extricate ourselves from culture or do we need it to even think, let alone communicate with others?&#8221; So asks the album notes of <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/rebecca-schiffman">Rebecca Schiffman</a>&#8216;s fourth full-length <em>Before the Future</em>, coming this summer via <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/lost-sound-tapes">Lost Sound Tapes</a>. The record sees the LA-based songwriter grapple with what it means to live a moral life within a society that can appear hellbent on compromising our personal values. Everything from grief, family vacations and the ethics of the pet-owner relationship are explored, but lead single &#8216;Little Mr. Civility&#8217; turns its attention to the experience of raising a young child. Namely the inevitable influence a parent has in shaping their nascent understanding of the world and its expectations. &#8220;The song expresses misgivings about the large responsibility one bears bringing someone into the world,&#8221; as Schiffman explains, &#8220;and resignation at having to try to shape them so they exist in society.&#8221;</p>

<p>Recording under the moniker <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/winter">Winter</a>, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/brazil">Brazil</a>-born, New York-based Samira Winter combines gauzy shoegaze and summery pop sensibilities to weave a sound as lush as it is energetic. Following the success of 2022 debut <em>Some Kind Of Blue</em>, Winter returns this summer with new album <em>Adult Romantix</em> on <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/winspear/">Winspear</a>, and lead single &#8216;Just Like A Flower&#8217; introduces both the style and theme of the record. The song&#8217;s reflective, often melancholic tone is buoyed by an insistent momentum, with Winter contemplating a move from LA to NYC amid the wider progression of young adult life. There are loves and inevitable losses along the way, but the forward motion can never quite be halted.</p>

<p>Originating as a narrative poem, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/the-chairman-dances">The Chairman Dances</a>&#8216; new album <em>Evening Song</em> traces the early days of a nascent relationship. A seminarian and a drummer mutually enamoured with one another, caught in the heady space of attraction and mystery, hungry to learn everything there is to know about the other. Lead single &#8216;We Rifled Through&#8217; drops us into the middle of this burgeoning intimacy, a scene which might appear mundane elevated by its details. A snapshot of two people meeting which not only evokes the connection growing between them, but the paths their lives have taken to lead them to that moment.</p>

I’m the lone church goer.” “How does that happen?”<br />
“One day, I went to church. I stayed. That’s it.”<br />
“That’s it? How did you know to go?” “I stole<br />

<p>Speaking of narrative poems, Belgium-born, New York-based vocalist, composer, and producer Charlotte Jacobs is releasing debut full-length <em>a t l u s</em> next month via New Amsterdam Records, and the album&#8217;s vocal-centric style could be said to represent its own contribution to the form. Jacobs&#8217;s spoken word delivery is held within soundscapes which blur the line between avant pop and contemporary classical, the style marrying the intentional craft of minimalism with intricate detail to create something almost otherworldly. Single &#8216;Mala&#8217; highlights how the vocals serve as the anchor and guide for the listener. The thread which leads them through this strange and beautiful world.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Honeypuppy &#8211; Understatement</h3>
<p>The led by songwriter Josie Callahan and featuring Adam Wayton (bass), Will Wise (lead guitar) and Jack Colclough (percussion), Honeypuppy is an Athens, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/georgia">Georgia</a>-based project based on fun and mischief. The first in a new series of monthly singles ahead of forthcoming release <em>DIRTY TV</em>, &#8216;Understatement&#8217; serves as the perfect introduction for anyone unacquainted with Callahan and co. A song typical of the band&#8217;s bittersweet sound where sincere emotion and sardonic wit sit side by side and neither comes out on top.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">jason calhoun + cla-ras &#8211; cruel work carols</h3>
<p>Recorded for a tour earlier this year, <em>cruel work carols</em> is a new split release from <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/jason-calhoun/">jason calhoun</a> and Jeremy Ferris&#8217;s <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/cla-ras/">cla-ras</a>. The pair have long held our attention with their use of sound and textures. The former most recently with <em>small circle</em> on <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/dear-life-records/">Dear Life Records</a>, a release which blended &#8220;organic and synthetic noises into a kind of constellation,&#8221; we wrote in <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2023/08/28/jason-calhoun-small-circle/">our review</a>, &#8220;small points to grasp as we move downward, to contemplate in all of their fleeting insignificance. And the latter on releases like <em>Five clusters, </em>&#8220;with subtle intricacies growing from every crevice,&#8221; we wrote of <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2022/01/10/albums-we-missed-in-2021/">Ferris&#8217;s work</a>, &#8220;its ambient folk style sees the organic slowly overwhelm the electronic, evoking ecology’s reclamation of abandoned industrial land. <em>cruel work carols </em>is no less evocative, calhoun offering a world of static and scrambled light and cla-ras something altogether weightier and stark. But although quite different, both suggest some approaching transcendence, however ambiguous that force might be.</p>

<p>&#8220;I watch my life on video / How the time just seems to fly / I put my whole life on video / With all the things that slip my mind.&#8221; So sings <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/kennedy-mann/">kennedy mann</a> on deliciously nostalgic new single &#8216;On Video&#8217;, the latest solo track from an artist you might know as having fronted Philly dream pop outfit <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/highnoon/">Highnoon</a>. Mann&#8217;s previous singles were hushed lo-fi affairs, though while this maintains the emotional resonance, the sound possesses a layer of cinematic gloss fitting for the title. <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/ava-mirzadegan/">Ava Mirzadegan</a> adds backing vocals to lift the track further, leading to something both trapped by and longing for the ever-alluring past.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Kitty Fitz &#8211; Life of the Party</h3>
<p>Last year the London-based songwriter <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/kitty-fitz/">Kitty Fitz</a> put out <em>All My Own Stunts </em>via <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/sad-club-records">Sad Club Records</a>, an EP which mixed equal parts vulnerability and charm to offer a sound at once laid back and emotionally charged. New EP <em>The Man in Me</em>, coming later this autumn via Sad Club once again, promises to build upon these foundations and push the Kitty Fitz sound further. Single &#8216;Life of the Party&#8217; holds all of the tenderness and self-deprecative wit that made the previous EP so special, but held within a vivid pop sound that nods to the likes of Caroline Polachek. “At its heart it’s a song about social anxiety, which is something I’ve always wanted to write a song about” Fitz explains. “My mental health has been a really turbulent journey, and as someone who naturally comes off as very extroverted, I wanted to expose that I have always really struggled to fit in.”</p>

If, at its heart, <em>Abracadabra</em> is a spell designed in hope of or belief in the transformative potential of fun, then &#8216;Sans visage&#8217; signals how such an incantation might be delivered with a straight face.</p>

<p><em>Migratory</em>, the forthcoming album from <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/japan/">Japanese</a> composer, vibraphonist and marimba player <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/masayoshi-fujita">Masayoshi Fujita</a> &#8220;draw[s] upon the phenomenon of avian migration as a central image,&#8221; we wrote in a preview, and explores &#8220;the possibilities that exist in the spaces between electronic and classical music.&#8221; With the record out at the end of the week via <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/erased-tapes/">Erased Tapes</a>, Fujita has shared final single &#8216;Desonata&#8217;, and the origins of the track underline the process of experimentation and invention which underpin the release. &#8220;I remember when I tried to record the melody for this song. While improvising with the backing track, I was hearing a melody in my head and tried to play it, but somehow I kept hitting different notes than what I wanted,&#8221; Fujita explains. &#8220;When I listened back, it gave me a strange feeling, but I liked its unique mood and the new image it evoked, so I decided to use it for the song.”</p>

<p>Following on from a successful single &#8216;Faded Photographs&#8217; with <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/ruth-radelet">Ruth Radelet</a>, Rochester-based musician, producer and artist <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/robert-ascroft/">Robert Ascroft</a> has returned with a new collaborative single, &#8216;Empty Pages&#8217;, on <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/hand-drawn-dracula/">Hand Drawn Dracula</a>. This time Zumi Rosow of The Black Lips fame lends vocals to a song straight out of the seventies. Derek James channels Mo Tucker in his drumming, leading to a beguilingly ambiguous interplay between rhythm and fuzz. <p>We&#8217;ve written about Roman Rivera&#8217;s <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/roman-around/">roman around</a> a few times in recent times, appreciating the way they use a wide palette of post-punk, pop and R&amp;B sensibilities to challenge the norm, be that of genre or gender. Again out via <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/trailing-twelve-records/">Trailing Twelve Records</a>, new single &#8216;Moves&#8217; continues the mission with an energetic examination of loss and adversity, or more specifically how to survive and thrive in the face of them. “‘Moves’ encapsulates the pivotal moments of my youth,&#8221; Rivera explains. &#8220;These experiences pushed me to surround myself with positive influences. My boundaries with love have been continually tested, such as being unable to contact my brother, watching old friends struggle with addiction, and being abruptly cut off by friends without explanation.”</p>

<p>&#8220;An attempt to process an extremely difficult period via an intimate, gentle sound.&#8221; That&#8217;s what <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2024/04/08/weekly-listening-april-2024-2/">we wrote back in March</a> about <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/alx-frncs/">alx frncs</a>&#8216;s &#8216;i cant do anything right&#8217;, a song which typified the confessional yet empathetic nature of the <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/brighton/">Brighton</a> songwriter&#8217;s work. Written in response to the loss of her childhood pet, new single &#8216;good is your friend&#8217; is no different, exploring themes of grief and mourning in a kind of post-religious space. The lapsed-Catholic state of mind where dogma might no longer be the organising logic of a life, yet the imagery and rhythms remain. The atmosphere is subdued and enveloping, with a textured cinematic feel that blossoms from its modest beginning.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Bitter Calm &#8211; Surrender</h3>
<p>&#8216;Salt&#8217;, the first single from <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/bitter-calm/">Bitter Calm</a>&#8216;s forthcoming album <em>Eternity In The Lake of Fire </em>on <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/earth-libraries/">Earth Libraries</a>, represented something of a change for the band. As we <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2024/04/17/bitter-calm-salt/">wrote in a preview</a>, &#8220;the song is still concerned with the weighty themes of love and death&#8221; that marked debut <em>Good Grief</em>, but &#8220;the shadowy slowcore sensibilities are replaced with something altogether brighter and more melodic.&#8221; But rather than a compensatory turn to positivity, the tone is something won in the hardest of manners, brightness not as an absence of dark but rather the strange marvel at being alive to record at all. Final single &#8216;Surrender&#8217; turns to alt folk sensibilities to further this style, positioning itself between acts like Songs: Ohia and Purple Mountains, the high priests of such moods.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Decimal Decade &#8211; Trace</h3>
<p>Decimal Decade is a recording project led by <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/chicago/">Chicago</a>-based songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist Nico Tiparescu. Born in Venezuela to Romanian and Peruvian parents and growing up in Spain and later Chile, Tiparescu has a more diverse background than most, and the breadth of his personal experience is evident in the debut Decimal Decade EP, <em>Soon to Evolve</em>. It&#8217;s a synthesis of styles and interests which emerged from the dissolution of a previous band, Tiparescu seeking to rekindle his love of music after a period of disappointment. “A constant parameter that I tried to follow was that everything in the songs felt natural to me,” as he explains. “All the ideas I put in had to be completely in line with what felt honest. <h3 style="text-align: center;">Masayoshi Fujita &#8211; Our Mother&#8217;s Lights (feat. Moor Mother)</h3>
<p>Coming next month on <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/erased-tapes/">Erased Tapes</a>, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/Masayoshi-Fujita">Masayoshi Fujita</a>&#8216;s new album <em>Migratory</em> sees the <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/japan/">Japanese</a> composer, vibraphonist and marimba player continue to explore the possibilities that exist in the spaces between electronic and classical music. The record&#8217;s title is apt, the release drawing upon the phenomenon of avian migration as a central image for its far-reaching sound. The album was &#8220;inspired by my experiences of living abroad and returning to my homeland,&#8221; Fujita explains, &#8220;as well as by the artists featured on this album who also somehow travelled or lived in other countries across the boundaries, and being influenced by the music of other lands but at the same time somehow led to their roots.&#8221; Artists like Mattias Hållsten and <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/hatis-noit/">Hatis Noit</a> feature on the album, but its is Camae Ayewa, AKA <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/Moor-Mother">Moor Mother</a> (Irreversible Entanglements / The Art Ensemble of Chicago), who steals the show with vocals on new single &#8216;Our Mother&#8217;s Light&#8217;.</p>

<p>Back in June we shared &#8216;The Call&#8217;, a single from <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/oh-rose/">Oh, Rose</a>&#8216;s new album <em>Dorothy</em>, coming soon via <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/antiquated-future-records/">Antiquated Future</a>. His album <em>i love you so !</em> is out now via <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/candlepin-Records">Candlepin Records</a>, a record the label say is about &#8220;a distaste for music scenes, the grief of losing a loved one, fear of age &amp; irrelevance, &amp; clutching on to specific moments in time even while finally understanding that moving on is a part of life.&#8221; Lead single &#8216;Net&#8217; is a great intro to Brooks&#8217;s blend of saturated tape textures and DAW wizardry, a slow-burning track that sits somewhere between the dense slowcore of Duster and They Are Gutting a Body of Water with the joyful, earnest and slightly submerged delivery of early Youth Lagoon.</p>

<p>We&#8217;ve featured a number of tracks from <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/surf-party-usa/">Surf Party, USA</a> in recent times, with &#8216;Barrel&#8217; and &#8216;Umbrella&#8217; capturing different dimensions of their new album, <em>Surf Party, USA 2</em>. <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2024/01/29/weekly-listening-january-2024-4/">The former</a> offered all the fun and chaos of a good day on swell, while <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2024/03/22/surf-party-usa-umbrella/">the latter</a> was more reflective, as though the sun was dipping below the horizon at the end of the day. With the record now out, the Brooklyn-based outfit have released another single, &#8216;Beach Ball&#8217;, a song which sits at the languid end of the Surf Party spectrum. <h3 style="text-align: center;">teasea &#8211; Always</h3>
<p>As well as being half of the indie-psych soul duo Ritual Talk, Brooklyn-based multi-instrumentalist Tom Criblez also records solo under the moniker teasea. The act is a vehicle for a heavier, shoegaze-adjacent style which sits somewhere between My Bloody Valentine and <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/Midwife/">Midwife</a>. Part of a new EP, single &#8216;Always&#8217; is a great place to start for the uninitiated. A densely layered track which envelops the listener from the off. But more than being a lesson in size and heft, the song is far more nuanced. Introspection manifest as sound, the track&#8217;s depth coming to mimic that of our interior lives, not to mention the murky network of relationships we maintain. But for all of its gloomy weight, there&#8217;s a certain lightness arcing through the sound too. The sense everything is reaching towards some state of enlightened truth.</p>

<p>In recent weeks we&#8217;ve previewed <em>Dyke TV</em>, the new album from Harmony Reynolds&#8217;s <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/wanda-what/">Wanda What</a>, with a number of singles which brought into relief what we&#8217;ve described as the &#8220;central tension&#8221; of the project, &#8220;one which might be crudely described as the friction between dreams and reality.&#8221; &#8216;<a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2024/07/08/weekly-listening-july-2024-2/">Big Tree</a>&#8216; offered a country-inflected croon which split the difference between playfulness and heartache, while &#8216;<a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2024/07/19/wanda-what-bye-bye/">Bye Bye</a>&#8216; turned to noughties buzz bands for influence for its sunny and energetic sound. With the album now out via Youth Riot Records, latest single &#8216;Besties&#8217; shows yet another dimension of the project. A pop banger which doubles as an ode to those friends who always have your back. &#8220;I love to lean into a sort of goofy cheerfulness,&#8221; Reynolds describes. &#8220;Its okay to simply write a pop banger about loving your friends.&#8221;</p>

<p>A song “told through the lens of an elderly man who&#8217;s looking for love after a tragic loss,” ‘Gary’ is the lead single and title track from a forthcoming EP by <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/braden-lawrence/">Braden Lawrence</a>. Perhaps best known as a founding member of <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/philadelphia/">Philly</a> rock band <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/the-districts/">The Districts</a>, Lawrence also previously recorded under the moniker Haggert Mctaggert, but has switched to his real name for last year’s album <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2023/07/26/braden-lawrence-living-in-america/"><em>When You Lose the Light</em></a>, released via <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/anxiety-blanket-records/">Anxiety Blanket Records</a>. Again on Anxiety Blanket, the <em>Gary</em> EP promises to continue the record’s blend of folk songwriting and contemporary indie pop. ‘Gary’ the single is a good introduction, a downbeat but sincere song full of wistful longing for things past, all hushed vocals and gently poignant instrumentation.</p>

<p>The latest &#8220;rework&#8221; of a track from their acclaimed album <em>Aura </em>on <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/erased-tapes/">Erased Tapes</a>, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/london/">London</a>-based, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/japan/">Japanese</a> voice artist <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/hatis-noit/">Hatis Noit</a> has teamed up with &#8220;multi-instrumentalist, laughter meditation practitioner and ambient godfather&#8221; Laraaji to reinterpret the album&#8217;s opener and title track. Previous reworkings have seen the likes of <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/preservation/">Preservation</a> and <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/armand-hammer/">Armand Hammer</a> push Noit&#8217;s work towards hip hop, whereas Laraaji uses open tune zither, kalimba and vocals to lead it further out into ambient landscapes, leading to a multi-timbral sound which reaches the for the horizon.</p>

<p>Hemlock Ernst, the rap project of Future Islands frontman Samuel T. Herring, has announced a new album, <em>Studying</em> Absence in collaboration with Icky Reels. Released via <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/beans/">Beans</a>&#8216; Tygr Rawwk Rcrds this coming October, the record sees Herring swap the typical jazz and soul beats of the Hemlock Ernst sound for Icky Reels&#8217;s industrial sensibilities and forces his most ambitious record to date. One loaded with all the history and ghosts of the South, that which happened and what might have been. <em>“Studying Absence</em> is what I see when I look in the mirror,” as Herring explains. &#8220;The record explores the magic that can arise when people are brought together by fate, and the poignant absence that underlines the human experience.&#8221; Check out lead single &#8216;Raised in the South&#8217; now:</p>

<p><a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2024/06/21/langkamer-richard-e-grant/">Last month</a> we introduced<em> Langzamer</em>, the forthcoming album by <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/langkamer/">Langkamer</a> on <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/breakfast-records/">Breakfast Records</a>, with lead single &#8216;Richard E. Grant&#8217;. Indicating something of a change of tone for the outfit, the song displayed a slower, more considered pace to house its confessional exploration of grief. Latest single &#8216;At the Lake&#8217; invites The Gold Dregs to help Langkamer further this sound, reaching for something as close to Americana as anything they have released to date. &#8220;&#8216;At The Lake&#8217; is a song about the fallout of binge drinking culture,&#8221; says drummer/lead vocalist Josh Jarman, &#8220;and the prestige that we attach to the idea of the poète maudit. The way we romanticise unhealthy behaviour in the name of creativity.” Hence references to Janis Joplin and James Joyce in the almost mournful sound, the track unfurling with all the slow, soul-searching regret of the worst day after.</p>

<p>Earlier in the month shared <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/Madam-Sad">Madam Sad</a>&#8216;s &#8216;Hope For You&#8217;, a single which introduced Maddison Schreiber and Evelyn Charlotte Joe&#8217;s &#8220;willingness,&#8221; as <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2024/07/01/weekly-listening-july-2024-1/">we put it</a>, &#8220;to confront difficult things with a compassionate face.&#8221; With its depiction of relationships and their inevitable end, latest single &#8216;Exs&#8217; is no different. A song which looks to utilise a sense of personal growth in order to face such breaks with a more neutral, or even positive, attitude. “The song title is a way of holding myself accountable to make sure I am always hoping for the happiness of those who have hurt me,” Schreiber explains. “I also do get to a more genuine place where I feel compassion for an ex-lover’s success, and that’s a nice kind of sad.”</p>

<p>If <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/niall-summerton/">Niall Summerton</a>&#8216;s previous album What Am I Made Of? presented &#8220;easygoing pop [&#8230;] packed with lo-fi charm,&#8221; as <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2023/02/01/niall-summerton-wish-you-could-speak/">we wrote last year</a>, then new single &#8216;Train&#8217; offers an altogether more shadowy side to his work. Again released via <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/tiny-library-records/">Tiny Library Records</a>, the single pairs prominent drums and almost grungy guitar into a more conflicted atmosphere, the skipping rhythm faltering on occasion as though to evoke the apprehension at the track&#8217;s heart before rising into the squally climax. &#8220;It&#8217;s going to get harder,&#8221; Summerton sings, and amid the tumult of the closing seconds, you get the sense the prophecy has already arrived.</p>

<p>Described as &#8220;one part intervention, one part pep talk,&#8221; &#8216;Softshoe is the latest single from <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/nick-zanca/">Nick Zanca</a> ahead of his forthcoming LP, <em>Hindsight</em>. Recent singles &#8216;Little Professor&#8217; and &#8216;You Two&#8217; took on <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2024/05/28/weekly-listening-may-2024-4/">neurodivergence</a> and <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2024/07/03/nick-zanca-you-two/">open relationships</a> respectively, and &#8216;Softshoe&#8217; feels like it meets both tracks halfway. &#8220;I wrote this song for a dear friend and longtime collaborator during a period where we were struggling to communicate,&#8221; Zanca explains. &#8220;When zoomed out, it is a love song to a friend and a promise to persist and keep the faith.&#8221;</p>

<p>The first glimpse of forthcoming EP <em>The Return of Guitar Music</em>, ‘Dollhouse Heart’ is the new single from Slark Moan, alter ego of New York multi-instrumentalist Mark Sloan. “[The song] is about feeling small amidst the enormity of life, and the overwhelming sadness and beauty of living an ephemeral existence within an infinite universe,” Sloan explains, illustrating both the scope and inspiring nature of the record. “I recognize that I’ve gained an unabashed realism,” they continue, “creative empowerment, and gratitude that my younger self just couldn’t access.” Sloan is joined by Nashville songwriter and visual artist Meg Elsier, and together they conjure something that oozes calm confidence and newfound wisdom as life’s many emotions threaten to burst from the seams. <p>Since the release of the album, Erased Tapes have been sharing a series of reworked songs as standalone singles, with the likes of Matthew Herbert and William Basinski reimaging Hatis Nori tracks. The label connected with producer <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/preservation/">Preservation</a> (Mos Def, RZA, MF Doom) while he was living in Hong Kong to work on his album <em>Eastern Medicine Western Illness</em>, and he set out with the intention of preserving Hatis Noit&#8217;s singular vocal style while “bridg[ing] sonic time.” <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/fat-possum/">Fat Possum</a> duo <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/armand-hammer/">Armand Hammer</a> were enlisted too, and their version of &#8216;Jomon&#8217; brings two cultures together with searing power. &#8220;It’s such a miracle to me,&#8221; Haiti Noit explains, &#8220;that, thanks to Preservation and his powerful rework, Armand Hammer could connect this energy back to their own bold and beautiful culture and history on the other side of the globe. I could not stop the tears.”</p>

<p>The recording project of <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/oakland/">Oakland</a>-based illustrator and lettering artist Kyle Benson, Company Vacation uses music as a way to delve deeper into the everyday, and in doing so invites the listener to notice and appreciate the magic in the small details. Out at the beginning of Feruary, new album <em>Okay Headspace </em>feels like the culmination of these ideas, and succinct single &#8216;I Have a Little Room in My House&#8217; serves at the nostalgic, buoyant prologue. &#8220;As a kid, I dominated the family computer. It was steroids to my tiny brain,&#8221; Benson explains. &#8220;My parents kept it opposite the TV, centrally located in the family room, to keep anyone from using it to look at porn. Having a computer room felt like the luxury of the rich.&#8221;</p>

The record sees the trans artist both catalogue the past and confront the present, with Hogan searching for ways to survive and find community in a society which too often seems to have been built to prevent such endeavours. &#8220;If I was a loaded gun / You might / Treat me better,&#8221; they sing, hinting at the defiance which sits at the heart of their work, an anti-capitalist song which yearns for something more.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Den Der Hale &#8211; Donkey Skin</h3>
<p>With their evocative blend of psych, folk and post-rock, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/sweden/">Sweden</a>&#8216;s Den Der Hale established themselves as a mysterious force back in 2019 with EP <em>Harsyra</em>, and having now signed to <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/fatcat-records/">FatCat Records</a>, forthcoming album <em>Pastoral Light</em> looks set to build upon these foundations to paint a bleak picture of humankind&#8217;s decimation of the natural world. After the foreboding simmer of Bela Tarr-inspired &#8216;Horse From Turin&#8217;, the five-piece are back with new single &#8216;Donkey Skin&#8217;. A track which draws on the seventies animation of the same name to create an ethereal sound at once alluring and dangerous, doing for French fairy tales what Lankum do for Irish folk tales.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Hatis Noit &#8211; Jomon</h3>
<p>Having featured in David Lynch&#8217;s Manchester International Festival showcase in 2019 and appearing in Rick Rubin&#8217;s Showtime documentary series <em>Shangri-La</em>, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/japan/">Japanese</a> voice artist Hatis Noit released the superlative debut album <em>Aura</em> on Erased Tapes in 2022. “Words cannot describe everything we feel,&#8221; she explained in the liner notes. &#8220;How can one accurately verbalise the sensation we feel when we’re a newborn and our mother holds us in her arms, and we feel her skin on our cheek [&#8230;] Music is a language that can translate that sensation, feeling, the memory of love.” The description goes some way to describing the album&#8217;s tactile, enveloping sound, one all the more impressive for the fact that it is conjured exclusively from Noit&#8217;s voice, looped and layered into entire worlds. Made with <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/berlin/">Berlin</a>-based Taiwanese-Japanese media artist NAOWAO, the new video for the single &#8216;Jomon&#8217; brings this to life even further, matching the almost shamanistic sound with visuals every bit as mystical, collapsing the apparently divided spheres of human, natural and spiritual experience onto a single plane.</p>

<p>Born in <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/montreal/">Montreal</a> and now based in <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/toronto/">Toronto</a>, Kaia Kater makes music inspired by <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/canada/">Canadian</a> folk music, her father&#8217;s Grenadian heritage and the Appalachian music of her college years in West Virginia. Planning to release a new record sometime in 2024, Kater kicked off the year by releasing a new single, &#8216;The Internet&#8217;. A bright and tumbling folk song, it captures the strangeness of communicating with loved ones at a digital remove, replacing physical proximity with a stream of ones and zeros pinged around the world via satellites and fibre optic cables. &#8220;I can only talk to you through the Internet,&#8221; Kater sings, &#8220;in bits and in bytes and right angles.&#8221;</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Large Brush Collection &#8211; Arm&#8217;s Length</h3>
<p>Back in September we wrote a preview of <em>Off Center</em>, the forthcoming record by Austin folk rockers <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2023/09/22/large-brush-collection-better-be/">Large Brush Collection</a>. “The band combine intuitive rhythms with intricate detail to conjure soundscapes able to explore the most personal of things,” <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2023/09/22/large-brush-collection-better-be/">we wrote</a>, impressed with their ability to explore thorny issues with nuance and tenderness. The album comes out at the end of the week, and in anticipation Large Brush Collection have unveiled one last single. Titled ‘Arm’s Length’, it is perhaps the most important track of all. &#8220;This was the first song I brought to the group when Dan (Magorrian) and Gaby (Torres) and I began playing together,” describes songwriter/bassist Nora Predey. “And we all really connected over it. In a way, I think it became the foundation of the band.” With Torres’s flute and snaking melodies, the song ebbs and flows between dreamy and anxious, floating along sedately before rupturing with stabs of stormy guitar and clattering percussion.</p>

<p>The project of <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/new-jersey/">New Jersey</a> singer-songwriter Tommy Florio, LOUD HOUND is a project that crafts polished pop songs made emotive and interesting with lo-fi guitar and introspective lyrics. Following last year’s album <em><a href="https://loudhound.bandcamp.com/album/its-okay-to-be-lonely-part-ii">It’s Okay To Be Lonely Part II</a></em>, LOUD HOUND has returned with a brand new single ‘Comet’, which exists at the quiet, melancholy end of Florio’s stylistic repertoire. This is due to the circumstances in which it was created. “[I] rented a house in the middle of the mountains of Pennsylvania so I could clear my head after the most gut-wrenching break up,” Florio describes. “I needed to isolate myself from the world to understand what just happened and process my emotions so I could slowly get back to myself.” But it’s not all hushed heartbreak, Florio’s tired voice reaches out for hope and healing, and the energetic electronics that support the chorus suggest they might be on the horizon.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Lutalo &amp; Claud &#8211; Running</h3>
<p>‘Running’ is a joint single between <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/vermont/">Vermont</a>-based songwriter <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/Lutalo">Lutalo</a> and <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/brooklyn/">Brooklyn</a>’s <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/Claud">Claud</a>, a song which lands at the super catchy sweet spot between indie rock and pop. Both artists released records last year, Lutalo with <em><a href="https://lutalo.bandcamp.com/album/again">AGAIN</a></em> on <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/winspear/">Winspear</a> (which <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2023/08/29/lutalo-again/">we described</a> as “blend of folk, rock and soul which…critique capitalist and racist systems”), and Claud with <em><a href="https://toastmp3.bandcamp.com/album/supermodels">Supermodels</a></em> on Saddest Factory Records, both of which established them as some of the freshest new indie pop talent around. <h3 style="text-align: center;">Sam Evian &#8211; Wild Days</h3>
<p>If the soulful psych pop of 2021&#8217;s <em>Time To Melt </em>saw Sam Evian embrace a retro aesthetic, then forthcoming album <em>Plunge</em> sees the <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/new-york/">New York</a> songwriter take things to a whole other level. Carved from the lush pop that marked the seventies, the record is written from the perspective of Evian&#8217;s parents, tracing a story of love in all of its complexities and complications. A team of friends including Liam Kazar, Sean Mullins, El Kempner (<a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/Palehound">Palehound</a>) and Adrianne Lenker (<a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/Big-Thief">Big Thief</a>) all offered their talents, following Evian&#8217;s orders to keep things fun and immediate. “No-one knew the songs or what the plan was,&#8221; he explains. &#8220;We kept it loose and fun. This was the spirit of the sessions. No headphones, no playback, minimal overdubs, or bleed. Fast and loose.” Lead single &#8216;Wild Day&#8217; gives a glimpse as to what to expect from the album, where the nostalgic haze is leavened by the spontaneity of the process.</p>

After collections from <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/benjamin-shaw/">Benjamin Shaw</a> and <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/fighting-kites/">Fighting Kites</a>, it is the turn of the latter&#8217;s guitarist and Kirigirisu Recordings founder Neil Debnam, AKA Broken Shoulder, to have his various odds and ends gathered into one release—<em>Shark Islands: A Broken Shoulder Archipelago</em>.</p>
<p>For those unfamiliar, Broken Shoulder utilises looping guitar lines, field recordings and noise to weave soundscapes that appear both minimalist and fully-formed, Debnam possessing an exceptional ability to balance beauty and chaos. Which is how his songs manage to span the entire spectrum of moods, from pretty tenderness to needling dread, and blend a careful expertise with experimental, improvisational fluidity. In doing so, Broken Shoulder acts not only as a solid counterpoint to the frenetic Fighting Kites sound, but also as a pertinent soundtrack to contemporary life—bridging between the human and inhuman, organic and digital.</p>

<p>Just as with <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2019/07/29/benjamin-shaw-shouldve-stayed-at-home/">Shaw</a> and <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2019/07/12/fighting-kites-mustard-dinner-retrospective/">Fighting Kites</a>, we&#8217;ve given Debnam the space to reminisce about his music, taking us through the anthology and giving a little insight into the how the songs came to be.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Shark Island (<strong>Crow Versus Crow Session)</strong></h3>
<p>I had no idea when I recorded this session quite how important a part of my life the Crow Versus Crow radio show would be. Huge thanks to both Mr Audio Antihero for arranging this and for introducing me to a show that would in turn introduce me to so much good new music and uncover a whole scene that I was not really aware of. And big thanks to Mr Crow for letting me do a session. It has always been an honour to have my stuff played on his shows alongside a lot of excellent music.</p>
<p>This version of Shark Island is a classic example of what I feel is a later version of a song being better than the original. In spite of it being played live there seems to be less obvious fluffs in it than the original (a large portion of which I should say was also recorded live), and there seems to be a more defined structure, whereas a lot of the original was improvised and consequently there was a fair bit of searching for where the song was supposed to go.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Oak &amp; Mirrors (Crow Versus Crow Session)</h3>
<p>Oak &amp; Mirrors is named after the ceiling of a pub I like. The song first appeared on the Tape of Disquiet release and was my love letter to the first Tortoise album or at least this bit (the middle section) was. I always thought this would be fun to do with a band, but then maybe the Tortoise rip-off would be even more obvious than it already is. Guess it would sound better to call it a tribute rather than a rip-off, but if the cap fits…</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Don’t Get Caught In The Treads</h3>
<p>I’d been trying to get this ‘field recording’ of my keys rattling whilst I walked over some loose drain covers in Kawasaki into a song for a while and finally managed to do so [on the <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2016/04/01/audio-antihero-release-bern-yr-idols-bernie-sanders-benefit-comp/">Bern Yr Idols Audio Antihero Compilation</a>], combining it with this nice little Papa M-like guitar part. What can I say, I wear my influences on my sleeve. Think I must have got a new bubbly noise maker before I recorded this, as I seem to be enjoying using it a lot on this track. Perhaps a little too much actually. I like the occasional extra-loose drain cover sound the most on here.</p>
<h3 style="text-align: center;">Eating Flowers</h3>
<p>Can’t deny that as much as I might pretend otherwise, I really love playing these kind of big riffs. And I think I like it even more when they are slightly fluffed as this one is at times. It was probably recorded at very low volume though. I’m also enjoying hearing that £20 Argos acoustic guitar. That was probably the most fun to play guitar ever. And excellent value too! If you only listened to the start and the end of this song, you’d probably never imagine it was the same piece.</p>
<p>I’m shocked about how many things surprised me listening to these songs. Perhaps that says equal amounts about my memory and my creative process. I miss some of that gear I was using back then. Some items have been returned to their owners, some have broken.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Morning Is Broken (Resonance FM Session)</h3>
<p>This session was pretty terrifying. No pressure, just LIVE ON THE RADIO! It was a lot of fun though and the host pointed out something I’d never noticed before which was that in times of tension and stress (the interview), I clutch my broken shoulder. Not sure how exciting for the audience my interview was. Actually can’t recall any of it apart from the shoulder clutching. I’ve always loved this song.</p>
<p>There’s an unintentional Stereolab rip-off that was only noticed the next time I listened to the Stereolab record. And of course the song is much longer than it normally is. That’s one of the perils of live-looping and general panicky performance I guess. Fame-wise, it was probably all down hill from here. I can hear the fear in the playing, but hopefully you can’t. The key to not getting found out is when you make a clanger, just repeat it, as if that’s what you meant to do.</p>
<p>That’s a real bass guitar being used in the session but you’ll probably be shocked to hear that the marimba at the end is actually a keyboard! WOW!</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Family Banana Coaster</h3>
<p>Perhaps this title is internet searchable but the ride is now gone. I never rode the family banana coaster. It looked a bit tame. I would have been more interested in an adults only banana coaster. Although having written that, I can now understand why such a name would never be used for fear that it would be misconstrued. This bass riff had sat on my loop station for ages since a Fighting Kites rehearsal where we were trying to write some new songs. It never worked for FK but I always loved it so was delighted to finally have a chance to give it an airing.</p>
<p>This is almost like a real song with a verse and chorus and everything. Except there’s a dropped beat in the loop which makes it sound all pleasantly awkward.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Other Tropisms (The Wrong Rock Show Session)</h3>
<p>Thanks to Jamie, this session made me huge in South Africa. Well, maybe not exactly, but it was once again lovely to be asked to do something for people to hear who would be way out of my normal path. It’s funny that the session was a split one with Jack Hayter as although we share a birthday we are musically pretty different. This doesn’t stop me from enjoying his tracks on this session though.</p>
<p>Listening back, I’m really pleased with the version of Other Tropisms on here. This is another one where the version recorded after the actual release turned out to be better than the original. Learning how to play stuff live focuses the mind a little, but at the same time restricts in an interesting way. The title came from a video I found I think in the Prelinger archive. Naturally I used it to make a ‘promotional video’ for the song. I can’t imagine how many extra sales it resulted in. I quite like it though. Should probably make some more videos.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Who Is Samuel Cocking? (The Wrong Rock Show Session)</h3>
<p>Who IS Samuel Cocking? I know who he is, but maybe not many people do. If you visit Enoshima you might see his name. I’d like to say the song is a tribute to him, but, like many of my titles, the name has very little to do with the actual song. It’s just a result of me finding it amusing. I am easily amused.</p>
<p>I’d kind of forgotten about this song and am enjoying listening back to it. It has a big sound of the Japanese summer on there, an insect buzz that sounds like static, and has the sound of the crows in Yoyogi Park too. Perhaps the same crow that tried to attack me at a later date. I felt like screaming to it ‘I’m a long term vegetarian and animal lover, leave me alone!’ They may be very smart creatures but haven’t yet been able to pick up on my thoughts telepathically.</p>
<p>The bicycle bell also comes from Yoyogi Park. I like it when that chimes in. There’s also something that sounds like an approaching storm, but I suspect that might just be wind on the mic with a lot of echo on it. Spooky, eh? Had forgotten about the guitar twiddling at the end. It probably is faded out before a massive clunky wrong note, but quite like the way the guitar appears to be running late, has a quick look around and then pops off again.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Uff/Magow (WVUM Session)</h3>
<p>Another session, another radio station, another country. I believe that this particular session has some added personal significance for Mr Audio Antihero but I’ll leave him to spill the beans on that if he wants to. This time the session was a double header with Benjamin Shaw, reuniting the Southern Records warehouse dream team, this time in musical performance rather than the packing of music product. I’m pretty sure these tracks were recorded live, as was my preference when doing sessions, perhaps because I was brought up on the idea of Peel Sessions. Sadly, I did it in my living room rather than a BBC studio. But they sound pretty good I think.</p>
<p>This session also featured a decent version of &#8216;Morning Is Broken&#8217;, a title which I always thought was quite amusing to me, but most people probably presumed was me just making a mistake with the title of the hymn. I kind of miss the days when I used to make little songs like these with maybe even tunes and structures, but deep down inside, I think my heart was always set on ploughing a big old drone furrow, even if people would prefer it if I hadn’t.</p>
<p>This version of Uff/Magow never made it to the broadcast but I’ve put it on here because it’s quite different to how the recorded version sounds. To be honest, that first album is a bit of a mystery to me now. I can’t remember or imagine how those songs came about, with their structures and parts. This version features a nice little guitar freakout at the start which is always fun to do, and the sharp cut into the song itself works quite well for once. I wonder how many times I had to try that before it worked well enough to use. The name of this song is another one of my secret titles that has a lot of meaning to me but almost certainly no meaning to anyone else. This song was always a lot of fun to play live and listening to it makes me want to go and pick up my guitar again. Actually, I probably should as I’m supposed to be recording a new thing featuring only guitar, but instead I guess I have to go to work. Hmmmm, slick ending to this song too. Well done me!</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Ultimate Donko (WVUM Session)</h3>
<p>This version of &#8216;Ultimate Donko&#8217; features another extended guitar ‘work out’ at the end that was usually elongated when I played this song live due to the fact that I had to try to subtly fade out the main loop with either a finger or a toe whilst continuing to play. Seemed to work out quite well this time though and I’m pleasantly surprised listening again.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Cat’s Forehead</h3>
<p>Another big old riff, probably played almost silently again in my living room to avoid annoying the neighbours. The Crow Versus Crow session version is a lot more sedate and delicate because it doesn’t have the bassline but in this version I seem to remember that if you isolate the bass part it sounds like it could be a Slowdive song! I was having computer trouble whilst recording this and couldn’t listen back whilst recording in real time so I put loads of reverb on the bass and hoped for the best. Really like how it came out. Like most of my favourite Broken Shoulder songs there’s probably too much going on but it just about hangs together and almost sounds kind of triumphant. At least to my ears anyway.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>“Why had I never watched this kind of thing before?&#8221; asks the narrator of &#8216;The Lonesome Bodybuilder&#8217;, the lead story in Yukiko Motoya&#8217;s short story collection, <em>Picnic in the Storm. &#8220;</em>Boxing, pro wrestling, mixed martial arts—I&#8217;d assumed they weren’t for me. How wrong I was. I always do that. I decide who I am, and never consider the other possibilities.”</p>
<p>Originally released in 2012 as A<i>rashi no pikunikku </i>by Kodansha in Japan and <em>The Lonesome Bodybuilder</em> by Soft Skull Press in the US, <em>Picnic in the Storm</em> cements Motoya&#8217;s position in the contemporary short story scene, sitting somewhere between <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/alexandra-kleeman/">Alexandra Kleeman</a> and Carmen Maria Machado in her idiosyncratic depictions of the human experience. What if normalcy is self-imposed and limiting, Motoya asks. What if embracing the weird is to realise your true self?</p>

<p>Translated by Asa Yoneda, the book contains eleven stories that bend our world ever so slightly out of shape, like a warped mirror that catches the light at odd angles. &#8216;The Lonesome Bodybuilder&#8217; perfects the idea, presenting an ostensibly ordinary couple with ordinary problems—boredom, loneliness, miscommunication, perceived disinterest—and introducing a bizarre extra dimension. In this case, the pursuit of rippling muscle, body oil and tanning lotion, the chemical glare of too-white teeth. Feeling ignored by her husband, the narrator starts a severe regime of weight-lifting and exercise and high calorie consumption, soon evolving into a freakishly muscular physique. Her young male trainer might evoke suspicion but the narrator is clear that it isn&#8217;t an affair she is after. &#8220;I just wanted to luxuriate in some taut muscle.&#8221;</p>
<p>Her colleagues are amazed, supporting her quest by setting up an area at work where she can exercise throughout the day (turning on her only when she fails to intervene when a dog attacks another outside. “A proud bodybuilder never puts their power to practical use,” the narrator explains). Her husband, on the other hand, fails to notice the alarming growth of his wife. “Even though my chest felt so solid it was as though there was a metal plate under my skin,&#8221; she complains, &#8220;my arms looked huge enough to snap a log in half, my waist sported a six-pack, and from a distance I looked like a big inverted triangle on legs.&#8221;</p>
<p>Despite her friends insisting that&#8217;s just what men are like, the narrator becomes increasingly exasperated, eventually breaking down in tears after he compliments her on a haircut she hadn&#8217;t had. &#8220;You only care about yourself,&#8221; she tells him. &#8220;The longer I’m with you, the more unsure I become of myself. Am I really that uninteresting?&#8221; There&#8217;s a Lynchian quality to the scene as the narrator strips to her show bikini, that stilted soap opera melodrama of <em>Twin Peaks</em> where the usual decorum of restraint and reserve is lost. The ending is a happy one, the couple stay together, but the lasting sensation is one of perturbation, as though some depth of humanity has been revealed, some concentrated core of desperation that we spend our days trying to ignore.</p>
<p>Elsewhere, the stories of <em>Picnic in the Storm</em> range from the odd to the downright fantastical, from a creature hiding in a changing room cubicle to a creepily prescient old man who rides typhoon winds on his umbrella. &#8216;I Called You by Name&#8217; keeps the strangeness out of view, the protagonist distracted by a bulge in a curtain during a meeting but never seeing who is behind it. &#8220;I&#8217;ve wasted too much of my life waiting around for ambivalent beings like you,&#8221; she tells it. &#8220;Ghosters. Men who let you down easy. You must think you’re really something. Calling yourself a phenomenon.&#8221;</p>

<p>An agony aunt gives questionable advice in &#8216;Q&amp;A&#8217; (&#8220;Challenge him to a duel,&#8221; she tells someone struggling to escape an abusive boyfriend), an artist locks themselves in an isolated cabin and is visited by a possibly supernatural pack of canines in &#8216;The Dogs&#8217;, and a wife imagines burning the titular character in &#8216;Straw Husband&#8217;—a literal straw man prone to outbursts of rage. Such violence is never far away in Yukiko Motoya&#8217;s work. Couples duel to the death in &#8216;The Women&#8217;, strange beings attack traditional markets in &#8216;Paprika Jiro&#8217;, while the gender-flipped oedipal tale &#8216;How to Burden a Girl&#8217; sees off wave after wave of gang goons, the father and daughter fighting them off with swords and guns.</p>
<p>&#8216;An Exotic Marriage&#8217; tells of Kitae, a woman who, upon examining photographs, realises she is growing to resemble her husband. The relationship becomes weird and strained, their characters bleeding into one another. The slovenly husband becomes suddenly obsessed with cooking, Kitae finds herself drinking beers in front of the TV. The whole thing has an air of performance, as though they are, however consciously, carrying out roles they assume they other wants (or hates). The closing scene is as fantastical as anything in the collection, Kitae breaking the vicious circle of mimicry and second-guessing. &#8220;You can stop being husband-shaped now,&#8221; she yells. &#8220;Take whatever from you want to be!” The husband explodes and changes into a flower, a peony that Kitae drives into the mountains and plants, where he blossoms into something huge and beautiful.</p>
<p>Such a sense of release encapsulates a collection concerned with the truth behind things, asking if it is a moral imperative to crack the surfaces of the superficial world, even if the truths within are icky or gory or downright embarrassing. Do we owe it to ourselves to be faithful to our deepest feelings, or do we owe it to others to smother them dead? &#8220;Of all athletes, I most respect bodybuilders,&#8221; the trainer in &#8216;The Lonesome Bodybuilder&#8217; tells the narrator. &#8220;They hide their deep loneliness, and give everyone a smile. Showing their teeth, all the time, as if they have no other feelings. It’s an expression of how hard life is, and their determination to keep going anyway.&#8221; The narrator thinks about it for a while. &#8220;But,&#8221; she replies, &#8220;if you’re always smiling like that, don’t you lose sight of your true feelings? Is it right to smile when you’re so lonely you could cry?&#8221;</p>
