Amy O – Dribble Dribble

With album Mirror, Reflect coming in May via Winspear, Amy O has shared single ‘Dribble Dribble’ by way of introduction. The record charts the experience of new motherhood during the pandemic, where twin forces of uncertainty and isolation ran a deep seam of precariousness through everything. But as ‘Dribble Dribble’ shows, Amy O documents this time with compassion and playful curiosity, the lo-fi pop sound lifting rhyming schemes from the books she read to her daughter to offer a mood at once fun and incisive, and Glenn Myers’s backing vocals further the conversational closeness.

Please don’t let the tide rush in
Held unburdened by the wind
A roomful of familiar
No catastrophes within

Bloomsday – Dollar Slice

The recording project of Brooklyn’s Iris James Garrison, Bloomsday introduced itself back in 2020 with debut Place to Land, an album which charted the fear, loss and joyous freedom inherent within the quest to find one’s true identity. But despite the personal subject matter, collaboration has always been an inherent part of the Bloomsday DNA, and new album Heart of the Artichoke is certainly no exception. Coming this summer on Bayonet Records, the release see Iris joined by Andrew Stevens (Lomelda, Hovvdy), Alex Harwood, Richard Orofino, Maya Bon (Babehoven), Hannah Pruzinsky (h.pruz, Sister.) and Chris Daley, and proves to be not only a celebration of togetherness and community but a testament to the enduring presence of friendship itself. Lead single ‘Dollar Slice’ is a great place to jump in, the cornerstone of the album which hints at the sound’s devotional quality. “I’m not religious,” Garrison says, “But I am into the idea of mystical, higher power—whatever that means – and that power seeing me, and my bullshit, and calling it out. That’s kind of godly to me.”

Cereus Bright – Boys

We introduced Boys, the new EP from Knoxville‘s Cereus Bright, back in February with single ‘Drifting’. “An ode to every tired soul and person without direction,” as we put it, “which offers comfort not through the promise of agency but rather the unforeseen benefits of letting oneself relax into the drift.” With the EP now out via Nettwerk, Cereus Bright has released the opener and title track as a final single. Inspired by stories of a “hard, complicated figure” of a grandfather, the song delves into the tangled world of cause and effect not so much in search of an answer but to instead reveal the layers of complexity which define any given person. As the artist explains: “It’s essential to reckon with the people or institutions that have affected us or hurt us, but some times truly understanding is impossible.” The song comes complete with a video filmed by Follow The Leader which you can watch below:

Boys is out now via Nettwerk and available from Bandcamp.

Fresh – Merch Girl

London punks Fresh have made a name with a heart-on-the-sleeve brand of rock, with tracks like ‘Babyface‘ and ‘Morgan & Joanne‘ typifying the bittersweet celebration of the queer experience offered by LP Raise Hell. Ahead of tours with Teenage Halloween and Los Campesinos!, Fresh are releasing a brand new EP Merch Girl on Specialist Subject Records next month, and have unveiled the title track for an early taste. It’s a song “about living in that space between wanting something and achieving something” as lead Kathryn Woods explains, centring on the titular character as they yearn to break free from the sidelines and make art of their own. “Standing at the back of the room / Wishing I could do what they do,” as Woods sings, “After all, I could play that guitar part better / I could hit those drums much harder / I could sing that song far louder // But I’m just a merch girl.”

I’m tired of living like this
Letting people talk over me for years and years and year and years
Gonna start doing things my way
Gonna write a song with a voice so strong it knocks you sideways

I’m not just a merch girl

Hour – Ease the Work

Though named after an image from a tragic Greek myth, Hour‘s 2018 album Anemone Red had more quotidian concerns. “Hour present the same heartbreak and longing as it occurs today,” we wrote in our review, “repressed and layered behind our day-to-day responsibilities, manifest not in blood-dripped flowers but the slow, sad progression of the world around us.” The project, led by Michael Cormier-O’Leary, returns this spring to build upon this foundation with Ease the Work, a brand new release on Dear Life Records. Challenging any clear distinction between composition and improvisation, the album performs the same small miracle of the previous records, presenting the everyday in all its joy and melancholy, comfort and strangeness. Listen to the title track now:

Ease the Work by Hour
Ease the Work is out on the 12th April via Dear Life Records and you can pre-order it now.

Jack Name – Cherie’s Eyes

Described as a “homage to the IRL world and its twisted and varied romance with the worlds of our minds,” Fabulous Soundtracks is the fourth album from Los Angeles-based musician Jack Name, out this May on Maple Death Records. Each song on the record is intended as a mini-soundtrack to a specific scene, and Jack Name runs the gamut of genres and stylistic influences in order to create cinematic soundscapes able to elevate these moments into their full surreal potential. Single ‘Cherie’s Eyes’ is the first example of this singular effort, presenting a sound at once odd and strangely intuitive, as though Fabulous Soundtracks functions within the logic and physics of dreams, where everything is off-kilter yet charged with meaning.

Fabulous Soundtracks by Jack Name
Fabulous Soundtracks is out on the 17th May via Maple Death Records and you can pre-order it now.

Logan Lynn – To Be Of Use (Smog Cover)

Songwriter, producer, filmmaker, television personality and activist Logan Lynn is releasing new LP SOFTCORE this June on Kill Rock Stars. The album, written in the aftermath of a break-up, serves as a vehicle of rebirth. “A record of my coming alive again, and coming back to myself in the face of pretty extreme betrayal,” as Lynn puts it. “It’s a party album in a way—loud, wild, unhinged and abrasive at times—but it’s also a collection of tender songs about longing and togetherness.” A cover of Smog’s ‘To Be Of Use’ opens the album, a plaintive track which slowly gathers momentum, as though Lynn uses Bill Callahan as a way to shake off the shrouding gloom and turn a new page.

SOFTCORE (2024) by Logan Lynn
SOFTCORE is out via Kill Rock Stars on the 7th June and you can pre-order it now.

Magana – To My Love

Last month we introduced Magana‘s new album TEETH on Audio Antihero with the single ‘Paul’. “A song where grief is transcribed almost verbatim,” as we put it, “and tenderness, strangeness and plain disbelief can exist simultaneously.” With the album out today to coincide with the Worm Moon’s peak illumination, Magana has released final single ‘To My Love’ to further introduce the witchy rock atmosphere. A strange sound for a strange world, made by an artist determined to use every style available to best communicate their own experience of trying to exist within it.

Teeth by Magana
Teeth is out now via Audio Antihero and Colored Pencils and you can get it from the Magana Bandcamp page.

Pina Palau – We’ve Got No Time At All

“The birds outside my window, they are singing as if the world was still the same.” So opens ‘We’ve Got No Time At All’, the centre point of Get a Dog, the sophomore album by Pina Palau. It’s a song that very directly captures the despair felt by young people across the globe, describing a world of war and mass shootings, heatwaves that “no AC can get us out of.” The Swiss artist put a career in medicine on hold to pursue her musical career, and her creative work is driven by the same fascinations that led her to the path to becoming a psychologist—what label Mouthwatering Records describe as “a desire to understand unvarnished humanity—the motivations, emotions and stories that shape our lives.” Which is why ‘We’ve Got No Time At All’ stands out on an album full of varied emotions. A rare track that stares down a generation’s biggest concerns head-on, blowing out into furious noise in its cathartic climax.

We’re still young they say we have time
But the truth is: we’ve got no time at all

The recording project of Portland, Oregon based songwriter David Swick, DoomFolk StarterKit started as an exercise in creativity. Challenging himself to write a song within an hour, Swick would record the result on his iPhone and upload the track to Bandcamp, aiming to bypass the self-doubt and urges to edit his work in order to embrace the more intuitive side of the practice. The rules changed slightly for 2020 EP SleepyGhost, but the self-imposed limitations remained as the five songs were recorded within twenty-four hours.

This year saw Swick team up with Nashville label Like You Mean It Records, releasing a cover of Gillian Welch’s ‘Look At Miss Ohio‘ as part of a sampler before moving on to create new DoomFolk StarterKit material. The process for these new songs is different from what came before, as highlighted by the latest single, ‘Sun Self’. Because while previous releases aimed to excise second-guessing, the new track is a collaborative effort, with Allie Cuva (Allie), Bennett Littlejohn (Bendrix Littleton, Hovvdy, Katy Kirby), Lou Turner and Trevor Nikrant (Styrofoam Winos) all lending their talents.

With its warm and reflective rhythms, the track retains the intimate tone of previous DoomFolk StarterKit releases, though there is a newfound tension too. The song “centers on the two-sided coin that is an introspective reflection,” Swick explains. A questioning of self-contemplation, or at least a firmer understanding of its implications. “[Introspection is] an absolutely healing practice that can carry destructive potential when one sits in it too long,” Swick continues, “where it moves from meandering rumination to self ruination.”

This lasting sentiment is shot through both the creative practice and the song itself. A reminder that stepping outside of one’s own thoughts is sometimes needed. That ideas and problems can be shared, others invited to help.

and it feels like
I should take a break from my brain

The project of Austin’s Charlie Martin and Will Taylor, Hovvdy have become mainstays in the bedroom pop scene, carving themselves a niche with their distinctive downtempo pop songs. Due later in October via the dream team of Double Double Whammy and Specialist Subject Records, their third full-length Heavy Lifter sees Hovvdy continue to evolve while staying true to their core values.

Perhaps the biggest change is the lack of muffled fuzz that enveloped previous releases. Calling on the help of engineer and producer Ben Littlejohn, the band have expanded their repertoire beyond languid rhythms and mumbled vocals. These songs are still undoubtedly Hovvdy, but hold a newfound confidence, a clarity of thought and purpose that wasn’t so clear on previous records.

Take single ‘Ruin (my ride)’ as an example, a song which the band say “explores the often complicated nature of social and professional rejection, and aims to celebrate the power in genuine connection.” It still sounds introspective, but the scenes it captures are easier to make out, evocative snapshots that skate over simple beats and subtle autotuned elements. It’s more rhythmic than anything Hovvdy have done before, and perhaps a signal of a wider change that’s seeing a blurring of the lines between pop and hip hop. The track comes complete with a video shot by Riley Engemoen and Marlon Hedrick and edited by Will Taylor, which you can see below:

‘So Brite’ follows a similar pattern, an earnest and patient song that holds both anxiety and an easy warmth. Unfolding slow and sweet as syrup, the song hinges on a central refrain that focuses on uncertainty and doubt, although never abandons the nostalgic vibes that made us all fall for Hovvdy in the first place.

i don’t know why that I wanted it
to stay like that
i knew that everything would change
when the light came back
once the sun came back

what if i start to lose my mind
what if i start to lose my shine

Heavy Lifter will be released on the 18th October via Specialist Subject and Double Double Whammy and you can pre-order it now. The band are heading out on an extensive US tour this autumn, so check out the dates below.

Hailing from Texas, new label Peach Bloom thought that gathering the best the state has to offer in independent music might be a good way to announce themselves. Hence, lonestar: a texas friends and family compilation was born, collecting artists from a variety of styles into one cohesive tape, linked by a common vision and appreciation of contemporary Texan life. As the label describe:

‘lonestar’ is a compilation focusing on Texas talent that goes beyond a genre. Entering a community we initially knew little about, we were greeted by beautiful and talented artists who welcomed us as family. this is an album made by friends for friends.

And some talented friends they have. Mouse Trap set the tone with the hushed sincerity of ‘Falling in Love’, the lo-fi textures conjuring a nostalgic innocence, and Crisman follows this with the equally patient and gentle ‘Go’. There are covers too, with Bare Mountain taking Emily Yacina’s ‘Miss You’ and further softening its edges and Skirts ejecting the mischievous energy of Alex G’s ‘Brite Boy’ to leave a vulnerable, heartbroken murmur.

Dead Sullivan do nothing to puncture the quiet haze with ‘Win’, and Fuvk’s ‘Madeline’ is equally sad and languorous, at least until the guitars bite back and introduce bolts of energy within the cloudy soundscape. The track signals something of a change of tempo for the release, as China Club bounce into the frame with the effervescent ‘Gucci Rainboots’, and although William Austin Clay’s ‘Flip’ loses some of the hyperactive edge, there are plenty elastic beats and fun vocal effects to keep things sprightly. ‘Game’ by Picnics does possess some of the groove of the previous track, though stretched like taffy so as to achieve a languid float.

With the dreamy mood reestablished, Why Bonnie enter with their stellar brand of duvet dream pop, before Hovvdy‘s distinctively sympathetic sadness drifts like evening dust. All that’s left then if for Pissing Boy to close things out with ‘There’s Just Life and Rings of Rubber’, a pastel-coloured piano ballad that morphs into noise rock before any vocals can emerge—a triumphant and affirming cacophony that captures the connection and kinship that marks the release.

lonestar: a texas friends and family compilation is out now and you can get it from the Peach Bloom Bandcamp page.

After spending a long while playing with the likes of Peter Matthew Bauer (The Walkmen), Lomelda, and Molly Burch, Oakland’s Ryan Von Gonten began working on a solo record of his own. With contributions from Hannah Read (Lomelda) and Andrew Stevens (Hovvdy, Lomelda), Truthlikeness was formed, Von Gonten honing not just a strong album but his own distinct aesthetic, a sound hazy yet paradoxically detailed, a dreamscape of pastel colours.

Written after a move from Texas to California, Truthlikeness is a record about the inherent strangeness of new places, as well as the loneliness of trying to making them your own. “I was really quite lonely at the time but also enthusiastic,” Von Gonten says, “so it was an interesting headspace to be in. I was trying a lot of new things but had few trusted friends for affirmation.” First single ‘Anthem’ explored this directly, the dreamy style conjuring a setting where nothing is as it seems, the vocals vulnerable and earnest as Von Gonten declares “I never go out. I gave it a chance, I never go out,” though never descending into outright melancholy.

Today, we’re delighted to be able to share a second single, ‘Fabrique’. Opening the album, the track follows a similar vein, a kind of waking dream as experienced during low-level fever, where rhythms and phrases repeat and recycle, coalescing into significance beyond the modest sound. Von Gonten’s falsetto is joined by the hypnotic pluck of guitar and sparse synths, and this arrangement seems to gather energy from its own order, eventually rising into a wistful finale where the drums finally kick in.

This is dreaminess not as some stylistic choice or genre trope, but a considered and meaningful expression of a life upended. And life is certainly upended during a change of home. Even aside from any obvious cultural and geographical differences, there is something more personal too, some uncanny sense that even recognisable things are different, that familiarity can no longer be trusted or else has ceased to possess meaning. With Truthlikeness, Ryan Von Gonten brings such a state to life, a heightened awareness of isolation and worry, of agitation and doubt, of the beauty of all things.

Truthlikeness is out on the 14th September via Human Noise Records and you can pre-order it now.

It gets a bit (extremely) long, so feel free to scroll to the bottom where we’ve collected the tracks into a handy 8tracks playlist. Or perhaps read the entire thing as some experimental poem.

And the usual disclaimer applies, there were too many great tunes to include them all, so treat this more as a selection rather than a comprehensive round-up of the year. Enjoy.

Born and raised in Michigan, David Means made a name for himself through a series of superlative short story collections, with Assorted Fire Events (2000) winning the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Fiction, The Secret Goldfish (2004) shortlisted for the Frank O’Connor International Short Story prize and The Spot (2010) winning an O. Henry Prize. April saw the release of his debut novel, Hystopia, which in keeping with the trend of acclaim has been nominated for 2016’s Man Booker Prize.

A book within a book, Hystopia is actually the novel left behind by Eugene Allen, a Vietnam vet from a slightly-alternate version of the 60s where John F. Kennedy survived Oswald’s assassination attempt and is serving his third term in office. Opened and closed by various notes and testimonies from friends and family members, Allen’s work makes up the majority of the novel, a narrative imagining characters from his time in Vietnam once they return home. The kicker, though, is that while they are back in the States, they never really ‘get home’, with the war following them back to a dystopian (but far from unrecognisable) America ravaged by biker gangs and forest fires.

In an attempt to solve the crisis of PTSD and violence, the government turn to an experimental psychiatric method called ‘enfolding’, where veterans reenact traumatic scenes while dosed up on a tranquilliser, Tripizoid. While even the doctors working on the project believe the technique to be without substance, it proves paradoxically effective for many subjects and blanks memories of combat. “Confusion is undoubtedly an element of the curative process,” writes Means. “In most cases the patient does forget about it, becoming fully immersed in the reenacted trauma’s nullification of the real trauma”.

Which isn’t to say it’s a silver bullet. Indeed the novel opens with a “failed enfold,” Rake, a man filled with the sort of all-consuming rage and propensity for violence unique to men forced into the sacrifices of war only to end up on the losing side. We find him with Allen’s sister, Meg (whom he has almost certainly kidnapped, and has undergone some degree of enfolding too), as they drive across Michigan on an anarchistic rampage of murder, drugs and destruction. Eventually, they reach the home of Hank, Rake’s former sidekick who has developed a love of trees since enfolding, a man who tries to protect Meg and figure out a way in which they can save themselves from Rake.

The second strand of the story deals with another enfold Singleton and his colleague Wendy, government officials breaking protocol to meet up and fall in love, who somehow end up on the trail of Rake, as though their rule bending was in fact a conspiracy on the part of their superiors to engineer the operation. Again though, confusion reigns, with Singleton’s boss admitting that a key part of being a commander is having the “gumption to go back and revise history”, talking of writing operation plans after the operation in order to ensure they are correct.

This sense of counter-history runs throughout the novel, from Singleton and Wendy’s quest and Hank’s transformation into peaceful nature-lover, right down to Eugene Allen’s re-telling (re-imagining?) of his sister’s story. What becomes important for these troubled people is not discerning the capital-T Truth but rather finding a variation they can believe in. More often than not, this involves a sense of mission, the victim’s need for order in the face of chaos, the desire for purpose or meaning in “an age when everything else seemed to be spinning deeper and deeper into despair,” anything which enables them to form a narrative of the world in a way they would like it to exist.

“It was crazy, he admitted, but it kept him going and like all good delusions it was fuelled by genuine hope and dedication to the truth”

And that’s what sets apart David Means’ Vietnam from that of the postmodern cannon. Yes, it is full of claims and counter-claims and impenetrable paranoia, but rather than using these to trace a descent into bewilderment, Hystopia utilises them to chart a way out. In a world where confusion and conflict constitute the resting face of the planet, maybe disinformation is needed not to obscure the truth but rather create it?

Here’s a playlist of songs that are suitable or relevant in one way or another, or maybe just capture the mood of certain characters and scenes.
