Last week we featured a great a capella Guided By Voices cover, by New York’s ARMS, on our Covers Mix. Well that was the first track from a new covers album from ARMS – Backwards Record.

It’s always interesting to see how an artist takes an old song and makes it their own, but this is especially pronounced with Todd Goldstein’s distinctive vocals. There are no attempts at duplication, no songs that have that I’m-having-more-fun-singing-than-you-are-listening karaoke effect, and, most importantly, no outright butchering. Instead we get eight original re-imaginings, interpretations that have obviously been worked on and perfected.

Goldstein says: “Backwards Record is a collection of songs that have made me get all feel-something-y over the years and I hope that my appreciation comes across in this humble mess of internet doodaddery. Enjoy it with my compliments.”

The full tracklist is as follows:

1. “Corporeal” (Broadcast cover)
2. “Ballad of Big Nothing” (Elliott Smith cover)
3. “Goldheart Mountaintop Queen Directory (Guided By Voices cover)
4. “Ana Ng” (They Might Be Giants cover)
5. “Slowdance” (Matthew Dear cover)
6. “Disgust” (Thunder & Lightning cover)
7. “Ooh La La” (The Faces cover)
8. “Foolish Love” (Rufus Wainwright cover)

The LP will be available from the 2nd Sept from Paper Garden Records.

Edinburgh’s Meursault released their debut album, Pissing On Bonfires/Kissing With Tongues back in 2008, and have since released two more brilliant albums, All Creatures Will Make Merry and Something For The Weakened. Despite this impressive back catalogue, and heaps of critical acclaim, the band have never toured America. Well all that is about to change thanks to a successful Kickstarter campaign which has helped fund a trip to SXSW and subsequent east coast tour.

That’s all very exciting for American fans or those braving the trip to Texas, but why should the rest of us take notice? The answer lies in the ingenious method of fundraising that the band used along with the good folks over at Song, by Toad Records. The basic premise was that anyone who pledged support to the Kickstarter campaign was asked to vote for up to five songs that they would like to hear the band play on a specially produced album. And they weren’t limited to Meursault songs, suggestions of covers were welcomed.

The result is a pseudo-covers album (pseudo as there are a couple of re-imagined Meursault tracks thrown in too, such as the re-worked version of ‘Dearly Distracted’ in the player below), which has been wonderfully captured and produced. It must also be said that Meursault fans have great taste, with some of my all-time favourite songs making it onto the album (see ‘No Children’ by Mountain Goats and Wolf Parade’s ‘I’ll Believe In Anything’ in particular).

Each track has its merits, and I really don’t think there’s a dud amongst the fourteen strong collection. A personal favourite is the cover of Chad VanGaalen’s ‘Rabid Bits of Time’, which is perfectly suited to Neil Pennycook’s emotive vocals.

You can get the album now via Song, by Toad Records.

Bill Times a Billion are a husband and wife duo from Buffalo, NY that produce a lo-fi brand of pop music. Their latest EP, Say It Nicer, is an exemplary piece of garage pop – a succinct blend of original tracks and covers that clocks in at around 18 minutes, meaning that each song packs a punch without being overworked. The release does not outstay its welcome, instead forcing you to hit the repeat button. It’s addictive stuff that stops just before you are satisfied and you find yourself playing the whole thing again.

There are three covers on the release; a stirring rendition of Motor Away by Guided By Voices, a lovely version of I Think We’re Alone Now by Tommy James & The Shondelles, and a cover of Sam Cooke’s Bring It On Home To Me which signs off the album perfectly.

Their sound is lo-fi but not scuzzy, with Liz Brown’s vocals nice and clear rather than the aural blur that many bands of this genre opt for. Fans of Screaming Females, Sleater-Kinney, Shellshag, etc. should find a new favourite in Bill Times a Billion.

Say It Nicer is available for free over at Bandcamp.
