<p>In February we previewed <em>Shadow Child</em>, the latest album from <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/abigail-lapell/">Abigail Lapell</a> which was recorded while the Canadian songwriter was pregnant and unsurprisingly explores motherhood. &#8220;The tracks emerged stripped back and stark,&#8221; we wrote, &#8220;a stylistic move at least in part dictated by Lapell’s difficult experiences with IVF and miscarriage that comes to paint the journey to parenthood in all of its too-often unspoken truth.&#8221; With the release fast approaching, Lapell has shared the title track along with a video to further introduce this style. “I recently found all my old super 8 films, and I thought this odd little black and white claymation might fit well with ‘Shadow Child’, a song about pregnancy and childbirth – creation and transformation,&#8221; she explains. “But when I actually tried pairing the two, it was crazy. The unedited ‘backwards’ visuals fit the song exactly perfectly – like down to the second. Complete with the final reveal of the figure’s shadow, and then my own hands in silhouette, returning it to a formless blob. I couldn’t believe it.&#8221;</p>

<p>Following on from singles &#8216;Wide Awake (a.m.)&#8217; (&#8220;uses a melodic and melancholic style to explore the strange sensation of being faced with disaster at a distance&#8221;) and &#8216;Moss Song&#8217; (&#8220;its warm tones and languid rhythms allowing in the outside environment, playing like spring blooming in real time&#8221;), Niko Francis&#8217;s <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/air-mail/">Air Mail</a> has unveiled debut LP <em>a.m. Continental</em> with latest track &#8216;Won&#8217;t You&#8217;. Again falling somewhere between Lenderman-esque alt country and the sun-drenched pop of acts likes Cut Worms, the track explores the sensation of a relationship being slowly dismantled by forces beyond anyone&#8217;s control. It meditates not only on the pain of a separation but the enduring fondness that survives beyond physical remove. &#8220;As long as words are sincere / and what you want is clear,&#8221;  Francis sings in the first verse, &#8220;as long as you still feel near, even when you’re far from here / won’t you stay and love me?&#8221;</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Ben Auld &#8211; Red Bandana</h3>
<p>This May, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/norwich/">Norwich</a>-based artist Ben Auld will release <em>Loserdom</em>, a brand new album via <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/safe-suburban-home/">Safe Suburban Home</a> and <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/repeating-cloud/">Repeating Cloud</a> which signals something of a sea change. Whereas Auld&#8217;s previous work tended towards the twee end of indie folk, the new record draws on influences like Tony Molina and Teenage Fanclub to offer loud, scrappy and spirited style of power pop. Lead single &#8216;Red Bandana&#8217; heralds this new sound, as well as the mix of unabashed sincerity and tongue-in-cheek charm which marks his writing. &#8220;I was trying to write something that captured the explosive pang that can happen when you reflect on places you’ve lived and people you’ve known,&#8221; Auld explains of the single. &#8220;That sudden reminder of a life you used to have, the impossibility of returning to it, and the pain of living in the past.&#8221;</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Frog &#8211; Je Nes Sais Pas</h3>
<p>When cult favourites <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/frog">Frog</a> put out their <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2025/02/20/frog-1000-variations-on-the-same-song/"><em>1000 Variations of the Same Song</em></a> album last year, we didn&#8217;t think they were actually aiming for the big four figures. But follow-up <em>The Count</em> arrived hot on the heels of its predecessor and now the New York outfit are already gearing up to release the third full-length in the cycle, <em>Frog for Sale</em>. Described as an album &#8220;about how money sometimes gets in the way of love,” the record sees the Bateman brothers take inspiration from the likes of Buddy Holly and Paul McCartney, again switching up the Frog sound while maintaining that idiosyncratic charm that&#8217;s made them so beloved. Lead single &#8216;Je Nes Sais Pas&#8217; is available now, a track of bright energy and fading dreams, not to mention a trademark wit and humour. &#8220;You’re just no good anymore since you went away and didn’t darken any door,&#8221; as Bateman sings in one typical verse. &#8220;Now you got your hair like Anna Wintour except poor.&#8221;</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Jillian Lake &#8211; Human</h3>
<p>&#8220;Attuned to emotional forces and their significant gravitational pull, namely the strange tension of watching a loved one attempt to navigate a difficult period, willing more than anything to save them from the turmoil but conscious of being dragged into the mire yourself.&#8221; So we wrote of &#8216;Cold Where You Are&#8217; by <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/jillian-lake/">Jillian Lake</a> last month, a single which embodies the balance between compassion and suffering which marks the <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/vancouver">Vancouver</a>-based songwriter&#8217;s work. Now Lake has shared brand new single &#8216;Human&#8217; and this balance has never been more evident. It&#8217;s an intensely personal song which reckons with the self in the most intimate way possible, displaying Lake&#8217;s turn towards richer arrangements while still evoking the austere stillness of an empty room. A place where there is nowhere to look but inwards, no matter how uncomfortable. “&#8217;Human&#8217; is a song I wrote about the fear that you&#8217;re losing pieces of yourself, and starting to not recognize yourself,&#8221; Lake explains. &#8220;I remember the first time I saw the Eiffel tower I was so amazed and astonished. When I went back to Paris years later I just stared at it and didn&#8217;t really feel anything. It scared me that I lost that sense of wonder. I missed the old version of myself.”</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Matthew Squires &amp; Sunk Coast &#8211; Wing Song</h3>
<p>We&#8217;ve followed the idiosyncratic, ever-inventive songwriting of <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/Matthew-Squires/">Matthew Squires</a> for a number of years now, from his &#8216;<a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2022/09/02/matthew-squires-the-ballad-of-norm-macdonald/">Ballad of Norm MacDonald</a>&#8216; and quasi-cover &#8216;<a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2024/01/19/matthew-squires-poor-men-southeast-of-portland/">Poor Men Southeast of Portland</a>&#8216; to &#8216;<a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2024/11/04/weekly-listening-november-2024-1/">Song of a Cactus</a>&#8216; in 2024. Now, having moved to Ithaca, New York, Squires has teamed up with Zach Totta of Sunk Coast for a new track, and the result is no less distinctive. With vocals that rival Daniel Johnston in their ability to echo Kermit the Frog, the song is classic Matthew Squires, proving that genuinely compassionate music need not leave playfulness or strangeness at the door. &#8220;In the face of the absurd, it’s there I’ll find my answer,&#8221; he sings in one fitting verse, &#8220;I’ll decode the hidden words inside the movements of a dancer: / It’s the story of a king who forgot if he has merit / He sprouts himself some wings and then he sings ‘til all can hear it.&#8221;</p>

<p>&#8220;A record which explores time with <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/old-amica/">Old Amica</a>’s signature care and patience [&#8230;] suspended in a negative space seemingly disconnected from anything tangible, memories floating by in abstract grace.&#8221; That&#8217;s how we described the Swedish duo&#8217;s album <em>För alltid </em><a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2024/08/20/old-amica-for-alltid/">back in 2024</a>, again noting how their blend of organic and digital sensibilities manages to evoke memory in all of its emotional depth. With a new full-length set for release next month via <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/whitelabrecs/">Whitelabrecs</a>, Old Amica are now back with &#8216;Bländverk&#8217;, a spare piano-based track that again explores the poignant, often ethereal world of recollection. <h3 style="text-align: center;">Sulka &#8211; All Bets Off</h3>
<p>This summer <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/glasgow">Glasgow</a>-based songwriter Lukas Clasen, AKA <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/sulka/">Sulka</a>, will release new full-length <em>Bute</em> on <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/lost-map-records">Lost Map</a> and <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/no-soap-records">No Soap Records</a>. Following last year&#8217;s single &#8216;Halloween&#8217;, that as we <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2025/10/13/weekly-listening-october-2025-1/">said previously</a> combined &#8220;subdued vocals with an eerie backdrop of distorted guitars and synths,&#8221; he has now released a second track from the album to further whet appetites. Titled &#8216;All Bets Off&#8217;, it&#8217;s an ostensibly charming indie pop song that nevertheless delves into a toxic relationship. And not your average one either. Written from an equine perspective, it explores the exploitation at the heart of horse racing. “The song was partly inspired by a storyline in the TV show <em>The Sopranos</em>, where Tony buys a race horse and develops a genuine love for it,&#8221; Clasen explains. &#8220;I thought writing a song from the horse’s perspective would make an interesting device for exploring the ups and downs of a volatile relationship”</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Tory Silver &#8211; Microwave</h3>
<p><a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/pittsburgh/">Pittsburgh</a>-based <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/tory-silver">Tory Silver</a> makes a brand of indie rock that she says &#8220;[channels] the small joys and inevitable uncertainties of residing in a body.&#8221; She has a new record, <em>In Through the Front with Lasers</em>, coming at the end of May via <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/michi-tapes">Michi Tapes</a> and has unveiled new single &#8216;Microwave&#8217; in anticipation. The song is set in the cold chill of dawn, our narrator sat bleary-eyed in their kitchen, enjoying the quiet ahead of a day of selling their body for what Silver describes in an Instagram post as a &#8220;silly grocery job under crapitalism.&#8221; There&#8217;s a healthy does of existential dread sure, but there&#8217;s also enough garage rock crunch for it to feel rousing too. An anthem for the masses forced to drag themselves out of bed every morning to keep on keeping on.</p>

<p>Next month the <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/canada">Canadian</a> songwriter <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/cat-clyde/">Cat Clyde</a> will release <em>Blood Bone Bone</em>, a new full-length album on <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/concord-records">Concord Records</a>. An effort to reposition or reimagine her relationship with love, the record sees Clyde turn her indigenous Métis heritage for inspiration, as well as the wide natural world, and serves as a expression of everything from exasperation and fury to personal growth and joy. New single &#8216;Man&#8217;s World&#8217; falls at the former end of that spectrum, though repurposes its anger into something cathartic. &#8220;This is an expression of the frustration I feel existing as a woman in a patriarchal world,&#8221; Clyde explains. &#8220;It sometimes feels difficult to be on a 24 hour clock rather than a 28 day cycle, and a 12 month year instead of a 13 month year. I love and crave masculine energy when it’s strong, protective, and emotionally aware. <p>Back in 2025 we introduced <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/dayydream/">Dayydream</a>, the <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/glasgow">Glasgow</a>-based indie rock project led by visual artist and musician Chloe Trappes. &#8220;Straddles shoegaze, slowcore and indie rock to create a sound both hazy and deep,&#8221; we wrote of single ‘<a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2025/01/21/weekly-listening-january-2025-2/">Fucked Up</a>’, &#8220;its title perhaps belying the song’s inviting warmth but describing its confessional tone to a tee, the sound suspended with a light mist yet not without its own internal force.&#8221; Now Dayydream are about to release <em>Trace</em>, and EP which builds upon these foundations to delve into the strange, melancholic way the past persists into the present. True to this mood, the sound is often restrained and reflective, the tracks playing as though in the aftermath of something, Trappes and co. left alone but for the footprints on the ground, the fading fog of breath on glass. Single &#8216;Proximity&#8217; is a good place to dive in, the upbeat rhythm of its opening belying the weight at its heart, a burden which slowly twists the sound into something altogether more hefty and dense.</p>

<p>A cross-gen collaboration between composer Jack Kilburn and his father, British poet Mark Kilburn, the forthcoming <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/jack-k">jack k</a> album <em>8 Tracks </em>sits at the intersection of music, narrative and memory. Using primarily guitar and piano, Jack creates soundscapes which gesture towards ambient and alt-jazz, and coupled with Mark&#8217;s distinctively Brummie spoken-word delivery, the songs come to represent not only reflection on personal experience and family history but something stranger and more abstract. A hauntological sense of imagined pasts and aborted futures which works to evoke the off-kilter, often melancholic sensation of the contemporary British moment. True to its title, &#8216;Welcome To The New World&#8217; is the ideal entry point into this style. A track spacious and stark, as barren as the society evoked by Kilburn&#8217;s plainspoken lyricism, where the new world is not much of a world at all, but rather just the fading echoes of what we imagined as it falls away from us.</p>

Glimpse at the title of the latest Lamplight single &#8216;Year 2083&#8217; and you might think Hatcher-Williams has switched focus from the past towards the distant future, though in reality the song is very much embedded in the present. With hemlock adding supporting vocals, the track possesses all of the warmth of the previous album, not to mention the same emotional openness. As though written from within the fluidity of the current moment, with Hatcher-Williams working to establish what is important in real time. A complicated relationship between intimacy and distance. A sense of push and pull. An atmosphere fitting for a song which explores how even though we&#8217;re now able to communicate more freely than ever before, we&#8217;re somehow as far apart as we&#8217;ve ever been. “To be so connected / And yet so disconnected,&#8221; as a pertinent line states. &#8220;What’s the point in speaking / With so much left understood.” But rather than settle for a dismayed commentary on such conditions, &#8216;Meet Me Halfway&#8217; pushes further, reaching for the kind of concerted effort required on both sides of a relationship in order to sustain connection. <p>&#8220;A pleading dirge; a manic rumination on the human condition at the foot of a geological anomaly in <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/new-haven">New Haven</a>, CT.&#8221; That&#8217;s how musician <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/paul-bergmann">Paul Bergmann</a> described his latest single &#8216;West Rock&#8217;, a song released in anticipation of forthcoming full-length <em>Connecticut Cowboy</em>. Across a total of sixteen releases, Bergmann&#8217;s work has shapeshifted from one album to another, moving from scrappy folk punk to sleek piano-led croons, not to mention psychedelic excursions too. But it has always been bound by an overarching thematic concern with existential ideas of life, death and all the dreams therein. As the above description might suggest, &#8216;West Rock&#8217; sees Bergman return to the most immediate, raw form, pitching the audience into a shadowy world and barking confessions at us through the gloom. Think of the nocturnal volatility of acts like Bambara crossed with the Jason Molina&#8217;s bitter poetry and you&#8217;re getting close to the result.</p>

<p>The alter ego of US-born, UK-based songwriter Robin Koob, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/run-remedy">Run Remedy</a> embraces both the serious and silly sides of life in its folk rock sound, something embodied by latest single, a reimagining of Rick Springfield&#8217;s 1981 hit &#8216;Jessie&#8217;s Girl&#8217;. This version not only plays with the sound, swapping out the guitar solo for banjo, but also flips the gender to transform the track into a queer anthem. “I swear if I’m back home driving around South Jersey, <em>‘Jessie’s Girl’</em> will come on within the hour (shout out 95.1WAYV),” Koob explains. “It’s been stuck in my head my whole life. That level of cringey yearning is timeless, so obviously I had to make my own sapphic spinoff.” The single comes complete with a video to further cement the changes. “The original video is pure camp, so I basically Weird Al’d it with rainbow kids,” Koob continues. “We recreated almost every shot in one day, gorilla-shooting around Manchester, spared my bathroom mirror, and ended the day passing around the wig. Everyone looked better in it than I did, which feels correct.”</p>

It traces how personal pain so often has familial roots, and how one might go about absolving themselves of this weight. &#8220;[I] wrote this three years ago, after I had a conversation where someone told me I should visualize sending family guilt &#8216;up to the cosmic compost heap&#8217;,” Izak explained in an <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/DPolWLHkWBB/?img_index=1">Instagram post</a>. &#8220;Couldn’t manage to fit that line in a song but wanted to write about intergenerational stuff. New song &#8216;False Lights (Reprise)&#8217; reimagines a track from Bauer&#8217;s 2015 album <em>Dream&#8217;s End</em>, evoking the old maritime legend of wreckers luring vessels onto rocks in order to plunder their goods to explore more personal ideas of loss and ruin. As you might expect from such a description, the track sits at the darker, more melancholic end of the project&#8217;s spectrum, though within its tales of deception and devastation flickers something more hopeful or defiant too. A true light to match the malicious mimic, however black the night.</p>

<p>We&#8217;ve featured a couple of tracks from <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/joyer/">Joyer</a>&#8216;s new album <em>On the Other End of the Line… </em>in recent weeks, with &#8216;<a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2025/08/04/weekly-listening-august-2025-1/">Cure</a>&#8216; showing how the pair have &#8220;sand[ed] down the shoegaze scale of the previous record while maintaining its pop melodies [&#8230;] pushing the Joyer arrangements into newly ambitious territory.&#8221; While &#8216;<a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2025/09/26/joyer-glare-of-the-beer-can/">Glare of the Beer Can</a>&#8216; &#8220;sit[s] in [the] half space between reality and daydream,&#8221; as we wrote, &#8220;breathing a sense of romance into the ordinary, even if the longing at its heart seems destined to go unsatisfied for a good period yet.&#8221; With the album coming soon via <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2025/09/26/joyer-glare-of-the-beer-can/">Julia&#8217;s War Recordings</a>, the duo have returned with &#8216;At the Movies&#8217;, a song which paints another method of retreating from life&#8217;s pressures. Where its predecessor used romance as a way to overcome the everyday, the new song champions the safe harbour of the pictures. A space away from the world, even existence itself, if only for a few hours.</p>

<p>Recording under the moniker Lisa SQ, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/montreal/">Montreal</a>-born, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/hamilton/">Hamilton</a>-based multidisciplinary artist Lisa Savard-Quong creates indie rock with an avant garde edge, bending the conventions of the genre with a playful, curious and slightly surreal personality. With debut album <em>Reel Me In</em> coming next month, Lisa SQ has released new single &#8216;Make It Up to You&#8217; to introduce the style. A delightfully bittersweet ode to self-destructive tendencies brought to life with a team of friends and collaborators, including Tyler Kyte, Adam Hindle and Michael Brushy (all of Dwayne Gretzky fame), Simeon Abbott and producer Ian Docherty (July Talk). “Tyler Kyte (Dwayne Gretzky) and I were talking about people who always invite drama into their lives, and I kept picturing these classic tragic heroes, doomed but relatable,” as Savard-Quong explains. “The song grew out of that and my own pacing, daydreaming, and writing in the attic.”</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Rivulets &#8211; Came</h3>
<p>Under the moniker <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/rivulets/">Rivulets</a>, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/portland/">Portland</a>, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/oregon/">Oregon</a>-based songwriter Nathan Amundson has created stark, emotionally charged music which sits at the intersection of folk, slowcore and electrified rock for several decades. Latest single &#8216;Came&#8217; sits at the dark, downbeat end of this spectrum, a lonely song stripped back to its essential features, the guitar and murmured vocals enveloped by a shadowy emptiness, as though the real weight of the sound lies in its negative space. Amundson&#8217;s voice plays within this atmosphere as something hushed and half-defeated, his questions rhetorical and addressed to nothing but the night itself. Like the words of a man clinging on through the dark hours in the hope of glimpsing some streak of light on the horizon.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">roman around &#8211; Moves pt.2</h3>
<p>We last wrote about <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/roman-around/">roman around</a> (AKA Fresno, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/california/">CA</a>’s Roman Rivera) a year ago upon the release of full-length <em>The Toll of Unconditional Love </em>on <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/trailing-twelve-records/">Trailing Twelve Records</a>, describing how the album drew on intensely personal experiences to explore how love can persist and flourish within the most difficult circumstances. Now Rivera is back with brand new release <em>Wish (Tapes EP) </em>which looks to both continue the style and evolve the project to chart new sonic territory. Fittingly, single &#8216;Moves pt. 2&#8217; serves as a extension of the track &#8216;Moves&#8217; from the previous album. A meditation on the passage of time which explores not only that which changes but also those things which remain. Not least those features of US policy, be it the long years of military occupation or the contemporary rise of mass deportation.</p>

Carrie and Matt Wagner have made a name with an imaginative, idiosyncratic style of shoegaze and dream pop, previous albums <em>I Can Feel the Weight</em> and <em>It Is Lighter Than You Think </em>owing as much to the contemporary cutting edge as the nineties classics, expanding the possibilities of a genre often prone to imitation. The new record promises to be their most ambitious to date, embracing a maximalist approach to create something colourful and shifting, each track its own kaleidoscope packed with texture and detail. <h3 style="text-align: center;">Sulka &#8211; Halloween</h3>
<p>The recording project of <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/glasgow/">Glasgow</a>-based songwriter Lukas Clasen, Sulka originated as a DIY effort, Clasen not only playing all the instruments on the early releases but producing and engineering them too. That era of the project peaked in 2021 with the release of <em>Take Care</em> via <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/lost-map-records/">Lost Map Records</a>, and by the time 2023 full-length <em>Distractions</em> came around, Sulka was recording in a studio with a full-band for the first time. The first release since that album, latest single &#8216;Halloween&#8217; finds Clasen still evolving his sound, pairing subdued vocals with an eerie backdrop of distorted guitars and synths to evoke the season of its title. The track which emerges captures the duality of Halloween, where nostalgic comfort meets the shadowy unease of the unknown.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">The Coral Gables &#8211; Heavy Load</h3>
<p><a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/New-York">New York</a>-based trio <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/the-coral-gables">The Coral Gables</a> have made a name combining country twang with good old fashioned rock and roll, not to mention a distinctively smart lyrical style. Latest single &#8216;Heavy Load&#8217; is the perfect introduction for the uninitiated, bringing to life an existential wander around the streets of Washington DC by riffing on the Bob Dylan classic &#8216;Mississippi&#8217;. I&#8217;ve been through the wringer / I&#8217;ve been through hell,&#8221; lead Kenny Hoffman sings in the opening lines. &#8220;I&#8217;m walking through a city / That I used to know well.&#8221; The sound itself is full of warm country tones and easy-going confidence, yet Hoffman&#8217;s vocals carry a tangible edge. Something which sits at the intersection of desperation and wry fatalism, the voice of a man baffled by the world occurring all around him.</p>

<p>Led by Glasgow-based visual artist and musician Chloe Trappes and featuring Loup Havenith (drums), Samuel Rafanell-Williams (lead guitar) and Dillon Salvi (bass guitar), <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/dayydream">Dayydream</a> is a project which straddles shoegaze, slowcore and indie rock to create a sound both hazy and deep. Latest single &#8216;Fucked Up&#8217; embodies this style, its title perhaps belying the song&#8217;s inviting warmth but describing its confessional tone to a tee, the sound suspended with a light mist yet not without its own internal force. The drums lead a gradual build across the track&#8217;s length, but any expectation of a shoegaze crescendo is unfounded, instead allowing a more understated, emotive air to be the lasting impression.</p>

<p>Based on mutual genre-bending inclinations and a deepening chemistry, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/Pink-Must">Pink Must</a> is the new recording project of Brooklyn-based sound artists and musicians Mari &#8216;More Eaze&#8217; Rubio and Lynn Avery. Forthcoming via <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/15-love">15 love</a>, their self-titled debut is both something of an introduction and mission statement. It establishes an interplay between polish and dissonance, as well as an often wryly sardonic vocal style and conscious resistance to easy labelling at every turn. Take opening track &#8216;Morphe Sun&#8217;, a glitchy song Avery describes as &#8220;almost a remix of itself&#8221; which presents a vainglorious figure from the perspective of a friend who can&#8217;t help but find some part of their personality charming. &#8220;u hated the sunset / didn&#8217;t match the shade of the palette / u wore that day / could have been worse,&#8221; as the second verse goes. &#8220;reignited / the taste of smoke in teeth / gotta confess i kinda found it sweet.&#8221;</p>

<p><a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2024/05/10/constant-follower-turn-around-for-me/">Back in May</a> we wrote about <em>Turn Around For Me / See You Soon</em>, the new double single from <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/Glasgow/">Glasgow</a>&#8216;s <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/constant-follower/">Constant Follower</a> ahead of their anticipated second album <em>The Smile You Send Out Returns To You</em>, coming early next year via Last Night From Glasgow. &#8220;[Stephen] McAll and co. breathe extra life into the arrangement,&#8221; we wrote of &#8216;Turn Around For Me&#8217;, &#8220;and the song swells with an affirming rhythm which tips it towards indie rock territory.&#8221; The follow-up &#8216;See You Soon&#8217; is no different. A continuation of the band&#8217;s exploration of memory which draws on the concept of saudade—the nostalgic longing for some absent person or thing—the song captures a picture of everyday life as haunted by a missing piece. Something which can never be resolved, a wound which will go on hurting.</p>

<p><a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2024/02/19/weekly-listening-february-2024-3/">Back in February</a>, we wrote about the collaboration between songwriter/producer <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/jordan-whitlock/">Jordan Whitlock</a> and <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/matt-bauer/">Matt Bauer</a>&#8216;s <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/memory-spells/">Memory Spells</a>, describing single &#8216;Take My Hand&#8217; as &#8220;Suffused with the lush, shadowy grandeur of Lynch at his most romantic.&#8221; Now the duo have returned with a brand new single &#8216; Heaven and Here&#8217;, another impressively atmospheric piece of cinematic pop music. Combining ambient and classical elements with Whitlock&#8217;s piercingly poignant vocals, it has all the drama and aching emotion of a tragedy. Sombre strings ache and sway over glitchy atmospherics and the muted thump of percussion as Whitlock delivers lyrics that possess a spare and opaque poetry.</p>

<p>Following on from 2023&#8217;s <em>AGAIN</em>, a record which explored the various forms of oppression woven through our societies, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/lutalo/">Lutalo</a> is returning this September with debut full-length <em>The Academy</em> on <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/Winspear">Winspear</a>. Described as a time capsule of lessons learnt in their first chapter of life, the album sees the Vermont-based singer-songwriter delve into their past and invite the audience along for the ride. Single &#8216;Ocean Swallows Him Whole&#8217; uses the doomed figure of Icarus to capture the peaks and troughs of this journey, drawing an energizing momentum from adrenaline rush, even if it comes from a fall.</p>

<p>A song she says is &#8220;about a lot of the myths and imagery we’re fed about the afterlife,&#8221; &#8216;Heaven Is&#8217; is the latest single from <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/nashville/">Nashville</a> singer songwriter <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/melanie-maclaren/">Melanie MacLaren</a>. Delivered in an easy country-pop style and with equal helpings of bittersweet feeling and wry humour, it combines existential musings with observations altogether more terrestrial. So heaven becomes both &#8220;a place up in the air&#8221; filled with lost loved ones and something in the here and now, like &#8220;sipping beer in folding chairs,&#8221; or &#8220;eating fruit straight off the vine.&#8221; &#8220;[&#8216;Heaven Is&#8217;] is about the experience of how deconstructing those myths leads to reality check that we really have no idea what happens,&#8221; MacLaren describes, &#8220;besides that we leave, and everyone else does too.&#8221;</p>

<p><a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/miserable-chillers/">Miserable chillers</a> has made a name with an idiosyncratic, constantly inventive sound, following a myriad of creative directions from Kate Bush-esque art pop to SNES soundtracks and field recordings. A mixtape featuring recordings made between 2018 and 2024, <em>Great American Turn Off </em>not only personifies the spirit of Miguel Gallego&#8217;s work, but serves as the ideal introduction for those looking to dive in for the first time. The release functions best as a full entity, rewarding those who take forty minutes to lose themselves in its easy rhythms, but we recommended single &#8216;The Shaft&#8217; for anyone who needs a quicker dose.</p>

<p>Specializing in what she calls &#8220;lo-fi folk tunes summoned from the Blue Ridge and set loose in <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/new-york/">New York</a> City,&#8221; <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/molly-murphy/">Molly Murphy</a> makes bright and emotionally resonant folk music. Her latest single is a cover of  The Alessi Brothers 1976 song &#8216;Seabird&#8217;. Complete with vocal harmonies, subtle mandolin and slide guitar, it&#8217;s a lush and laidback take on the original. Murphy&#8217;s vocals take centre stage, confidently but vulnerably delivering lyrics that use the imagery of the titular bird covering vast distances of remote ocean as a metaphor for distances altogether more human. &#8220;Like a lonely seabird,&#8221; Murphy sings, &#8220;you&#8217;ve been away from land too long / Oh, too long.&#8221;</p>

<p>Described as a release about time, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/old-amica/">Old Amica</a>&#8216;s &#8216;Tiden far&#8217; sees the <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/sweden/">Swedish</a> project turn their attention memory, looking to invoke how we experience the past, where the amorphous drift comes to form strange patterns and meanings. As such, the single is suitably hazy and slow-moving, its drama arising from a concealed hand as though always masked by something. Familiar sights and sensations as experienced through a gauze curtain. Old voices coming through a crackling radio, messages moving through the accumulated years with something to offer us yet.</p>

<p>Following a couple of singles in 2023, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/brighton/">Brighton</a> garage rockers <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/shady-baby/">Shady Baby</a> are back with a brand new single, &#8216;Feel It&#8217;. Comprising of Sam Leaver (vocals, guitar), Nick Varnava (bass) and Tom Jackson (drums), Shady Baby draw on late 90s and early 00s alternative rock, and &#8216;Feel It&#8217; is no different. A rich,  enveloping wall of sound is punctured by energizing electric guitar and crisp percussion, with enough hooks to appeal to the radio and festival circuit and enough grunge to bring in the rock-heads. All this raw energy is used to explore feelings of agitation and doubt. &#8220;&#8216;Feel It&#8217; started off as a song about grappling with impatience,&#8221; says Leaver, &#8220;but along the way it evolved into exploring the uncertainties of new relationships.”</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Special World &#8211; Cloak in the Attic</h3>
<p>This month saw <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/special-world">Special World</a>, that&#8217;s the solo recording project of <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/Philadelphia">Philly</a>&#8216;s Andy Molholt (who you might know from <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/speedy-ortiz">Speedy Ortiz</a>), released their debut physical release with a self-titled collection. Described as &#8216;early&#8217; songs, the cassette provides a peek into the inventive and often idiosyncratic style of the Special World sound, something demonstrated by the single and opener &#8216;Cloak in the Attic&#8217;. Starting with a glass smash but progressing with a lethargic rhythm, the song slowly crawls over the listener and absorbs them into its peculiar world. A place often strange and always colourful, where the light bends in odd shapes and everything takes on the loaded, abstract logic of dreams.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The songs of Glasgow&#8217;s <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/constant-follower/">Constant Follower</a> always engage deeply with the themes from which they sprout. Released in 2021, their debut <em>Neither Is, Nor Ever Was</em> saw lead Stephen McAll grapple with the consequences of a head injury which saw him lose almost all memory of his past, utilising poetry and art as a thread to follow when his own sense of identity had been obliterated. An album which &#8220;embrac[ed] this turmoil,&#8221; as we <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2022/07/06/constant-follower-from-the-national-wallace-monument/">put it</a>, &#8220;and in doing so offers a fundamental reimagining of memory, of the past and future, the real and not.&#8221; Follow-up <em>Even Days Dissolve</em>, last year&#8217;s collaborative album with <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/scott-william-urquhart/">Scott William Urquhart</a>, again drew on literature as it turned its attention to our strange connection with the natural world. Closing track &#8216;Comes A Silence (Basking Shark)&#8217; offered an encounter with the titular creature as a symbol of this relationship. &#8220;Here the basking shark is a kind of sublime experience,&#8221; we wrote in our review, &#8220;a visitation able to submerge us back into the ecosystems we have spent so long trying to escape.&#8221; As we continued:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 40px;">It’s an apt encapsulation of the message at the heart of <em>Even Days Dissolve</em>. Let us head back into the environment around us, Scott William Urquhart and Constant Follower suggest. Stitch ourselves back into the fabric of the land. For the land is already within us and always has been. It just takes a moment to remember it, to understand.</p>
<p>Constant Follower have now returned with a new double single, <em>Turn Around For Me / See You Soon</em>, and the songs are no less evocative. Co-produced and mixed in Austin, Texas by Dan Duszynski (Loma, Brian Eno), &#8216;Turn Around For Me&#8217; opens with the hushed grace so familiar to previous Constant Follower work. But as the track develops, McAll and co. breathe extra life into the arrangement and the song swells with an affirming rhythm which tips it towards indie rock territory. A spaciousness, perhaps, taken from the landscape in which it was recorded. &#8220;To stay out in the middle of nowhere in the Texas Hill Country for a month while we worked was quite the experience,&#8221; McAll explains:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 40px;">I slept in an old RV nestled amongst pecan trees and would be woken in the night by the coyotes. I&#8217;d go for night walks to try and spot them, but all I&#8217;d see were the sparkling eyes of countless spiders watching me from the grass. We&#8217;d spend long days in the studio mixing what I&#8217;d recorded in Stirling, adding magical touches. This track won&#8217;t be on the album. I felt like it needed its own space, and a 7&#8243; provides just that.</p>

<p>The track comes complete with a video by Tsumugi Yagi. &#8220;[The song&#8217;s] immediacy made me want to focus the video on a single character’s journey,&#8221; Yagi explains. &#8220;I filmed the character dancing in a simple setting, creating a visual that harmonizes with Constant Follower&#8217;s evocative music, which wraps around the heart of the listener. The video is intentionally not dark, yet it has a sense of enclosure, aiming to capture the nuanced emotions of the protagonist’s inner world.&#8221;</p>

<p>In January, Chayse Porter will release his third album <em>Endless / Boundless</em>, what label <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/earth-libraries/">Earth Libraries</a> describe as &#8220;nine new musical excavations and epiphanies the Birmingham-based songwriter dug up from life’s bedrock and polished to a shine in his basement lair.&#8221; &#8216;Flowers in Chains&#8217; is the final single before the record&#8217;s release and is the perfect introduction. On the surface it&#8217;s sweet and jangly, all warm breeze and syrupy sunlight, but this is a song of contrast and juxtaposition. Porter describes the lyrics as &#8220;jutting barbs left for someone clueless to their own cruelty,&#8221; and close inspection sees the sweetness sour and the breeze leave goosebumps on your skin.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Hank Tree &#8211; Sweet Saltpeter</h3>
<p>With Fergus MacDonald (formerly of State Broadcasters) joined by Roy Shearer (Ultras, Inspector Tapehead) and Bart Owl (Eagleowl, Broken Chanter), <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/glasgow/">Glasgow</a>&#8216;s Hank Tree take folk sensibilities and elevate them into something truly atmospheric with a mixture of field recordings and distortion. But amid their invention and subversion of genre, Hank Tree hark back to folk&#8217;s best roots, positioning themselves in the long lineage of artists using the form to write about social history and labour movements. Album <em>The Big North</em> is out now, and latest single &#8216;Sweet Saltpeter’ is the perfect entry point, capturing the individual experience within an industrial setting, where a worker is as replaceable as any other part of the machine. The track comes with a video by filmmaker Felipe Bustos Sierra, who saw clear links between the record and his documentary <em>Nae Pasaran</em>, and the result is a both moving and visually striking development of the presiding themes.</p>

The record follows on from the likes of <em>Hard Won</em>, as No braids the personal and the political into something unique. Latest single &#8216;Annie Oakley&#8217; is a perfect example. A road song which embraces the affirming experience of moving through a landscape while refusing to succumb to the romantic side of the genre. &#8220;“Most of the great songwriters in the Americana genre have darkly determined road songs featuring dirty motels, gas station coffee, the exhilaration of seeing America’s plains rushing toward them from behind a car windshield as if on a roller coaster designed by Willa Cather,&#8221; No explains. &#8220;Behind the scenery are some difficult questions, like ‘why have I chosen to do this with my life?’ and ‘will I ever be one of the greats?’&#8221;</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Meiwei &#8211; Stare at the Sun</h3>
<p>The project of singer-songwriter Michelle Mouw, Meiwei specialises in fingerpicked guitar, stirring arrangements and emotive lyrics. Mouw was born and raised in Beijing, moving to the US aged eighteen, and her music is an effort to explore the disparate parts of her life, identity and the wider world. It contrasts the USA and China, the past and the present, and the bustle of the city and the calm of nature. The new Meiwei record, <em>On This Trail Till I&#8217;m Home</em>, is the culmination of all this exploration, full of themes both deeply personal and welcomingly universal. Single &#8216;Stare at the Sun&#8217; is a case in point, what Mouw calls an &#8220;indie-folk queer anthem&#8221; which builds from earnest guitar strums into a rich arrangement that marbles wistfulness and hope, strength and vulnerability.</p>

<p>Other Vessels is an <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/austin/">Austin</a> indie folk outfit led by singer-songwriter Miranda Haney. Back in the Spring, the band got together to record the debut Other Vessels EP, <em>Empty Afternoon</em>, a collection of songs Haney describes as &#8220;intimate portraits of the partnerships &#8211; romantic, platonic, and familial &#8211; that shape (and save) our lives.&#8221; The title track is our first glimpse of how this might sound, a warm and serene folk pop song that Haney says is about &#8220;letting someone love you even though you feel like absolute dog shit.&#8221; &#8220;You&#8217;re coming over in 25 minutes, don&#8217;t trust my judgment when I&#8217;m so deep in it,&#8221; she sings, &#8220;Pulling a razor over my knees shaving my armpits to prove that I&#8217;m happy and clean.&#8221;</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Pari Eskandari &#8211; Chador</h3>
<p>&#8216;Chador&#8217; is a new single from Iranian-German artist Pari Eskandari, offered in memory of Mahsa Amini, the 22-year-old Iranian killed in custody in Tehran in 2022. It is a statement of defiance sent to those who would use violence in the name of so-called morality. Released via Tricky&#8217;s False Idols label, the song is dark and dramatic and full of ominous power. It comes complete with a video directed by Nikolas Meyberg which depicts a female ritual designed, as Eskandari explains, &#8220;to elevate the women from the ordinary to the sublime.&#8221; An expression of solidarity conducted through music and dance &#8220;for the women in Iran who risk their lives every day.&#8221;</p>

<p>Life has been a bit of a rollercoaster for <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/brighton/">Brighton</a>&#8216;s Shady Baby since we last <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2022/05/23/weekly-listening-may-2022-4/">featured them</a>. Bursting onto the scene after a single gig, they signed with tastemaker label Nice Swan Records and were played on BBC Radio 1. But a series of interruptions, including the departure of their lead guitarist and the cost of living crisis, slowed this momentum and things have been quiet since. That is, until now, as Shady Baby are back with a brand new single, &#8216;All Too Late&#8217;, a fittingly rousing and cathartic ode to fresh starts. “‘All Too Late’ is a song about looking to the future and wanting to feel in control of your own life,&#8221; describes lead Sam Leaver. &#8220;It was written as a piece of advice to myself to not be stuck in the past, to take charge of my own life and to know I have the power to change it.”</p>

A warm and cosy slice of charming indie pop, it&#8217;s a song about seeing old friends when returning home for Christmas, complete with two fictional huskies named after Duster and Shuggie Otis. It&#8217;s jingly, jangly and perfect for a warm room on a cold festive evening. And you never know, could catapult the band to Christmas royalties stardom. As Symbol Soup&#8217;s Michael Rae puts it: &#8220;every family friend or person you meet at a wedding will tell you that the way to make money is to have one Christmas hit.”</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Writing of first single &#8216;<a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2023/03/07/weekly-listening-march-2023-1/">Waves Crash Here</a>&#8216;, we described how <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/scott-william-urquhart/">Scott William Urquhart</a> and <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/constant-follower/">Constant Follower</a>&#8216;s joint record <em>Even Days Dissolve</em> represents &#8220;a continued engagement with both memory and the natural world.&#8221; Constant Follower&#8217;s 2021 album <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2022/07/06/constant-follower-from-the-national-wallace-monument/"><em>Neither Is, Nor Ever Was</em></a> set out the <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/glasgow/">Glasgow</a> band&#8217;s delicate but powerful brand of folk music, where lead Stephen McAll&#8217;s broached such weighty questions with care and grace. The new record develops this style by drawing energies from its assembled collaborators and further grounding itself in the Scottish landscape. Be it Urquhart&#8217;s probing and meditative guitar or the precision Norman MacCaig&#8217;s poetry, <em>Even Days Dissolve</em> presents the Constant Follower sound in its most developed state, and one uniquely positioned to capture &#8220;the duality of permanence and ephemerality of the environment which inspired it.&#8221;</p>
<p>MacCaig and the coastal wilderness which so often features in his work are inspirations Constant Follower have always worn proudly, and the songs of <em>Even Days Dissolve </em>feel like direct descendants from this lineage of Scottish literature. But the record goes further to cement the link by having &#8220;the grand old man of Scottish poetry&#8221; posthumously appear on a pair of the tracks. “Bringing two of these songs together with the voice of our beloved Norman MacCaig has been a real highlight of this project,&#8221; McAll explains. &#8220;His poetry was introduced to me by my high school teacher Mrs Tatarkowski, and it was the first prose I was able to read and understand when I was recovering from a traumatic head injury. So his work holds a deep space in my heart. I don’t think any poet or songwriter has matched his ability to capture the space and wonder of the natural beauty of Scotland.”</p>
<p>The first example of this is &#8216;Wildlife Cameraman (Summer Farm)&#8217;, where McAll splices his own story of the titular cameraman into MacCaig&#8217;s rendition of the poem &#8216;Summer Farm&#8217;. An ode to a life in the outdoors, where solitude inverts upon itself so as to find company in open spaces. Be it through the ducks and hens and swallows, or even the &#8220;straws like tame lightnings&#8221; hung from from hedges and strewn on grass. The poem offers the landscape as a place in which to escape interior turmoil if never quite transcend it, and serves as an archetypal example of MacCaig&#8217;s ability to bend the apparently trivial into something with true existential significance.</p>

<p>The song comes complete with a stop-motion video directed by Erentia Bedeker and the animation studio Wreckless Creative, furthering the track&#8217;s strange sense of solitude/non-solitude:</p>

<p>&#8216;Space Between Stars&#8217; offers a moodier sound, a certain tension runs through Urquhart&#8217;s guitar even as it evokes the sprawling distances of its title, while &#8216;Ash Wednesday Slow&#8217; sees hip hop artist CRPNTR deliver an evocative spoken word segment which itself seems to charge the guitar with a newfound momentum, as though Urquhart taps into the energy found between the words themselves. The song serves as a perfect example of what Urquhart offers the record. Because if MacCaig and McAll capture an image of the landscape, then his guitar offers the movement, be it fine detail or sweeping elegance, lifting the songs from static poems into something breathing, tableaus animated with moving time.</p>
<p>Closer &#8216;Comes A Silence (Basking Shark)&#8217; is a fitting conclusion, the guitar this time accentuated by saxophone and harp by Matt Carmichael and Andy Aquarius respectively as MacCaig returns to detail an encounter with the titular creature via his poem &#8216;Basking Shark&#8217;. A &#8220;roomsized monster with a matchbox brain&#8221; met while rowing on a &#8220;sea tin-tacked with rain,&#8221; which inadvertently triggers something of a crisis of identity. Because for all of its ancient size and cryptic silence, MacCaig experiences the shark not as some mystery rising from the depths but a thing in its proper place. Rather it is he who is cast adrift, representative of humankind having forgotten its position within the natural order of things. &#8220;Swish up the dirt and, when it settles, a spring,&#8221; MacCaig writes. &#8220;Is all the clearer. I saw me, in one fling, / Emerging from the slime of everything.&#8221; Here the basking shark is a kind of sublime experience, a visitation able to submerge us back into the ecosystems we have spent so long trying to escape.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s an apt encapsulation of the message at the heart of <em>Even Days Dissolve</em>. Let us head back into the environment around us, Scott William Urquhart and Constant Follower suggest. Stitch ourselves back into the fabric of the land. For the land is already within us and always has been. It just takes a moment to remember it, to understand.</p>

A perfect introduction to Buckley&#8217;s psych-inflected folk rock style, the song exists as something both ethereal and emotive, transporting the listener with its rich and languid sound. &#8220;The song is a reflection on my years as a teen and being on my own in London for the first time,&#8221; she explains. &#8220;It was wonderful and terrifying, and I was totally enthralled.&#8221; But running through this carefree spirit is a certain wry humour too, as though calling to attention the naivety which sits at the heart of such a mood.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Angel Abaya &#8211; The Bubble</h3>
<p>Next month, LA-based songwriter Angel Abaya will release debut album <em>The Bubble</em> on <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/earth-libraries/">Earth Libraries</a>. It&#8217;s a record which uses the image of its title to explore the various siloes we put ourselves in—be it relationships, friendship groups, identities or physical locations—and how such things can be both comforting and suffocating. As you might expect from a record dealing with conflicted states, the sound varies from bright to dark across its ten songs, and the title track encapsulates the mood. An upbeat pop song carried by Abaya&#8217;s soulful and playful vocals, the tone walking the line between confident and confessional.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Arthur Moon &#8211; 7 O&#8217;clock Clap</h3>
<p>The moniker of <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/brooklyn/">Brooklyn</a>&#8216;s Lora-Faye Åshuvud, Arthur Moon is a project based around intuition and experimentation, as typfied by forthcoming album <em>Chaos! Chaos! Chaos! Side B</em>. Through a combo of pop and electronic styles, they weave sounds full of left-field surprises while always maintaining an overarching sense of control, playing at the boundary between intention and improvisation. &#8220;The idea I had was to make an album that was &#8216;coherently incoherent&#8217;,&#8221; as Åshuvud explains, capturing the logical diversity of an old-school mixtape. Single &#8216;7 O&#8217;clock Clap&#8217; shows some of this spirit within its two-and-a-half minutes, its shifting moods and tempo evoking the ever-changing phenomenon of identity, and using those cast of ideas to shape what we might ultimately become.</p>

<p>With an album pencilled for release sometime later this year, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/new-york/">New York</a>&#8216;s Brother Language has unveiled the single &#8216;Epley Maneuver&#8217; to give an indication as to what to expect from the record. A slow burning slice of indie rock inspired by a close family member&#8217;s diagnosis of vertigo, the song manages to evoke some of the condition&#8217;s dizzying force. Its hushed beginning eventually rising into a hefty crescendo, strummed acoustic guitar and a sense of negative space giving way to thumping drums and a scrawl of distorted guitar. <p>After the shadowy tones of 2022 LP <em>Fire Season</em>, LA&#8217;s Corey Leiter has returned with brand new single &#8216;Lay It Down&#8217; on <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/anxiety-blanket-records/">Anxiety Blanket Records</a> which turns to a more compassionate vibe. While living in Echo Park by the 101 Freeway, Leiter came to witness his neighbours living under the overpass, and the track looks to humanise those failed by the system and state while raising money for the Los Angeles Food Bank. Leiter says the song &#8220;seeks to feel like a warm hug from a friend,&#8221; offering a hand to those in need amid a country all too ready to pretend they do not exist.</p>

<p>Described as hanging &#8220;in the liminal space between upbeat orchestral pop and anonymous late-night lounge,&#8221; the music of <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/austin/">Austin</a>&#8216;s Dorio (AKA Chad Doriocourt) offers a dreamy nocturnal sound indebted to Tokyo’s Shibuya-Kei movement. With new album <em>Strawberry Dreams</em> coming later this month on Earth Libraries, Doriocourt has unveiled new single, &#8216;Lost These Days&#8217;. Introducing the vocals of collaborator Rachel Rascoe, the song offers a typically vivid sound, with the easygoing retrofuturist vibe only accentuated by the clarity of Rascoe&#8217;s voice. &#8220;When the big night is here is late,&#8221; she sings with a tone somewhere between twee and sardonic, &#8220;Rest your heart rate, yeah the rush is great! / Legend in your own mind, if you write the lines.&#8221;</p>

<p>&#8220;Are you worried about the past / coming back to you too fast,&#8221; asks Hayden Desser, AKA Hayden, on the title track of tenth album <em>Are We Good</em>. &#8220;Are you worried about the sea / and what’s going on underneath?&#8221; The final image is a pertinent one for an artist who has made a name blending melancholic emotion with a certain slacker rock charm. A sound which might appear untroubled on the surface yet is constantly roiling and drifting below. The new record, his first since 2015&#8217;s <em>Hey Love</em>, feels like the perfection of this style, landing in the centre of a Venn diagram consisting of Berman, Malkmus and Berninger. <p>Back in 2022 we wrote about &#8216;The Negative Twin&#8217; from <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/lee-switzer-woolf/">Lee Switzer-Woolf</a>&#8216;s <em>Scientific Automatic Palmistry</em>, a &#8220;sparse and haunting&#8221; track which carried &#8220;a stark urgency beneath its inky surface.&#8221; Switzer-Woolf has a new album <em>Annihilation Signals</em> coming next month and latest single &#8216;Yucatán&#8217; gives an insight into what to expect. A song which again offers a shadowy atmosphere with a downward suck at its centre, drawing the listener down into a subterranean world this time overtly referenced in the lyrics.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Life Coach &#8211; Monday Morning Revelations</h3>
<p>Blending the sample and drum machine style of Casiotone For the Painfully Alone and Meursault with the cutting observational lyricism of Aidan Moffat and Malcolm Middleton, Life Coach is the project of <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/glasgow/">Glasgow</a>-based poet and musician Jamie Cameron. New release &#8216;Monday Morning Revelations&#8217; was penned during the imposed slowdown of the early pandemic, when Cameron took stock of contemporary lifestyles from that moment of surreal remove and found little to appreciate. What emerged is a song which rails against a society built towards efficiency and productivity at the expense of almost everything, as well as our habit of falling for the system&#8217;s false promises and playing its game despite ourselves. &#8220;Our holy present shrouded in denial is of little worth,&#8221; as Cameron says, &#8220;if all we seek is ourselves.&#8221;</p>

It is no secret that the constant cycle of releases is overwhelming, and we consistently fail to give so many of our favourite albums the attention they deserve.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s a list of thirty records we didn&#8217;t get a chance to tell you about properly in 2022. Releases we think you would do well to come to know.</p>

<p>A collection of traditional folk songs, lullabies and one original, the debut album from The A&#8217;s—AKA Alexandra Sauser-Monnig (<a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/daughter-of-swords/">Daughter of Swords</a>) and Amelia Meath (<a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/sylvan-esso">Sylvan Esso</a>)—is a mélange of the whimsical and quietly devastating. The product of over a decade of close friendship (the pair make up two-thirds of <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/mountain-man">Mountain Man</a>), and rooted in a long history of American folk eccentricity, the record features beguiling vocal harmonies, pitch-perfect yodelling and a sonic potpourri of everyday orchestral elements (the liner notes list instruments like hair, shoes, ice chunk, gravel, frog sample and shoelace). Examined individually the ten songs share little in common, but as a whole they somehow work perfectly, capturing both a sense of fun and genuine beauty. As Sauser-Monnig puts it when describing compiling the tracklist, “If it doesn’t make you cackle or cry, it doesn’t belong.”</p>

<p>True to its title, A.O. Gerber&#8217;s <em>Meet Me at the Gloaming</em> invites the listener into a world between day and night. A space in which the binaries of light and dark are muddied, complicated, ultimately dissolved into insignificance. To inhabit such a place, Gerber shows us, is to confess new feelings and relinquish old shames. To move beyond ideas of good and bad in order to exist on your own terms, and heal from the years in which this was not the case. Because if anything emerges from the nuanced folk rock of the record, it is the sense that strict boundaries are counterproductive and often imaginary, fencing off the rich confluences in which life is truly lived.</p>

<p>&#8216;Great&#8217; Britain might have had a strange smell about it for years now, but 2022 was the year it quit pretending and died in full view. Nothing quite managed to capture the spirit of the time like <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/glasgow/">Glasgow</a>-based outfit Ashenspire, with their LP <em>Hostile Architecture</em> manifesting this broken feeling as avant-garde metal. It&#8217;s a record of fury and futility that rails against not only the misery of the moment but the abject cruelty of those who have allowed it to come to pass. &#8220;Always three months to the gutter / Never three months to the top,&#8221; goes a line in the typically forthright opening track &#8216;The Law of Asbestos&#8217;, &#8220;another set of fucking homeless spikes outside another empty shop.&#8221; Through a series of shapeshifting, endlessly inventive tracks, the album posits hostile architecture as the contemporary British landscape. A society designed to inflict discomfort on its citizens out of nothing but fear and malice. &#8220;This is not a house of amateurs,&#8221; as the opener concludes bitterly. &#8220;This is done with full intent.&#8221;</p>

<p>If Bartees Strange&#8217;s debut record <em>Live Forever </em>confronted and ultimately rejected the pigeonholing and self-censorship too often required for a Black person to exist within a traditionally white space, then follow-up <em>Farm to Table</em> is a dispatch from the other side. A genre-hopping and often jubilant refusal to be put into a single box, or indeed to be anyone other than Bartees Strange. &#8220;That&#8217;s why I really can&#8217;t fuck with y&#8217;all / In fact I&#8217;m feeling more grown,&#8221; as he sings on &#8216;Escape This Circus&#8217;. &#8220;I really can&#8217;t fuck with y&#8217;all / And I don&#8217;t wanna act no more.&#8221; But though this embrace of the self comes with a sense of empowerment, there&#8217;s another side which proves equally important. Because just as Bartees Strange wasn&#8217;t all the things the industry (and society in general) demanded he be when chasing success, he&#8217;s not suddenly some saint or superhero having found it. He&#8217;s himself, a single person, communicating something important and hoping to reach whoever might need to hear.</p>

<p>&#8220;I think Mengistu Haile Mariam is my neighbor,&#8221; declares billy woods in the opening line of <em>Aethiopes</em>. &#8220;Whoever it is moved in and put an automated gate up.&#8221; For most artists, this might be using their best material too early on, leading with the ace up their sleeve. But woods is only getting started. Allusions to the drug epidemic through the Challenger disaster, colonialists on cannibal tours, quotes from Wole Soyinka&#8217;s <em>Kongi’s Harvest</em>&#8230; and that&#8217;s only by track four. &#8220;Conceptually, it was one of the [most] complex ideas I’ve ever tried to tackle on an album,&#8221; woods told <a href="https://www.thefader.com/2022/04/08/billy-woods-and-preservation-on-the-cinematic-chaos-of-aethiopes#:~:text=woods%3A%20Conceptually%2C%20it%20was%20one,idea%2C%20Africa%20as%20a%20reality."><em>FADER</em></a>. &#8220;It’s a lot of ideas, big and small, of a significant depth. I guess, to me, there’s a lot going on about Blackness as an idea, Africa as an idea, Africa as a reality.&#8221;</p>

<p>Antiquated Future Records has been steadily and quietly releasing collections of rarities from a range of artists as part of their Selected Songs series, delighting old fans and winning new ones, but perhaps most importantly preserving work which might otherwise have been lost. After the likes of <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2022/05/12/christopher-sutton-you-brought-me-back-from-the-dead/">Christopher Sutton</a>, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2020/12/08/twig-palace-your-most-secret-name/">Twig Palace</a> and <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2021/05/17/two-white-cranes-resilience/">Two White Cranes</a>, this spring saw the turn of Will Oldham with two albums: <em>Time From Work To Go</em> which featured songs recorded as Palace Music, and <em>Once Again In The World</em> with tracks from Bonnie &#8216;Prince&#8217; Billy. &#8220;Will Oldham&#8217;s wide-ranging influence can be felt in nearly everything in the Selected Songs series so far,&#8221; Antiquated Future&#8217;s Andrew Barton explains in the liner notes, and thus the releases feel like a milestone in the project. A key text added to the library, important not only in and of itself but also in reading what came after. &#8220;As an elementary school teacher,&#8221; Barton continues, &#8220;I look back on making it a bit like one of my students looking at a final project for a unit they got really into and cared deeply about. A view from my seat in a room full of fellow enthusiasts. The glow of the interesting subject pulses like a star in the sky, always there.&#8221;</p>

<p>A portrait of the Cisteritan monk and writer Thomas Merton, <em>Words and Silences</em> sees Brian Harnetty add original musical compositions to recordings made by Merton himself during his hermitage in <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/kentucky/">Kentucky</a> in 1967. We hear him identify birdsong, listen to gunfire from Fort Knox, celebrate New Year&#8217;s Eve alone and comment on an array of topics from Sufi mysticism to Michel Foucault. But more than offering an extraordinary window into Merton&#8217;s solitude, the album elucidates the beauty and melancholy inherent within his reflections, honing the endearing doubt which permeates each monologue and furthering the strange contradictions at work. A communication to no-one, immediate in tone but of course now distant too, and very much aware of the artifice of the recording process. Brian Harnetty embraces such conflicts much as Merton did, and thus not only continues the conversation but opens it wider. <em>Words and Silences</em> is a meditation on curiosity, and one which understands uncertainty and inconsistency to be the very foundations of any will to learn.</p>

<p>British post-punks The Cool Greenhouse follow their self-titled 2020 debut with a sophomore effort that doubles down on the deadpan wit, surreal humour and thinly-disguised existential pain. Where else are you going to find references to &#8220;Jordan fucking Peterson&#8221;, talking ladybirds and the unending search for the end of the sellotape, all within the same song? But despite the weirdness, The Cool Greenhouse have polished some edges too, dialling up the accessibility with what the liner notes call “flirtations with–heaven forbid!–melody, chord progressions and arrange-ments.” ‘Get Unjaded’ is the closest thing to a pop song the band have written to date, and they even have a go at actual singing on the slo-mo jangler ‘I Lost My Head’, but regardless of any stylistic evolution, it&#8217;s that sardonic lyricism which will keep you coming back.</p>

<p>Last year, we described <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/the-hold-steady/">The Hold Steady</a>&#8216;s eighth album <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2022/01/10/albums-we-missed-in-2021/"><em>ODP</em></a> as a glimpse &#8220;into the lives of imperfect figures dissatisfied or downtrodden and merely surviving.&#8221; Not so much a pivot from the self-destructive adventure of older THS releases as a natural evolution. With his fourth solo record <em>A Legacy of Rentals</em>, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/craig-finn">Craig Finn</a> pushes things a step further. A move from the survivors to people who didn&#8217;t, as well as those left in their wake with nothing but imperfect memories. With vocal support from <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/cassandra-jenkins/">Cassandra Jenkins</a>, Finn mines the full depth of this ground to reveal how we shape entire lives around such recollections. Again we are introduced to characters on the margins—a man forced into drug dealing by financial necessity, a woman escaping life with vodka and a superhero matinee—and the detail and control of the writing is as impressive anything Finn has crafted to date, further cementing his place at the table of America&#8217;s best working writers, in music or elsewhere. Memories might not be perfect, <em>A Legacy of Rentals</em> tells us, but they are a way to survive after all.</p>

<p>What fuels humanity&#8217;s incessant drive to conquer its surroundings? Why must we always seek to transcend? These are some of the questions explored on <em>Unfurling Redemption</em>, a solo album by Daniel McClennan (Warren Schoenbright, Why Patterns) which draws on a range of classical and avant-garde influences to conjure the full, dreadful weight of the subject at hand. Built from synthesised instruments and stock sound samples, the songs exist within a netherworld at once melancholic and ominous, as though having long come to understand transcendence as either an illusion or pyrrhic victory, and left to grasp blindly for redemption elsewhere in the dark.</p>

<p>In a piece for <a href="https://www.talkhouse.com/hear-first-dear-noras-human-futures/">Talkhouse</a>, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/dear-nora/">Dear Nora</a>’s Katy Davidson states confidently that <em>human futures</em> is the best thing they’ve ever made. “I’m just gonna come right out and say it,” they say, “this is the best one… all the previous Dear Nora recordings were practice for this moment, for this album. This is the culmination of them all.” It’s a bold statement for a project that’s been running since the late nineties, but it’s hard to disagree. <em>human futures</em> retains everything that has made Dear Nora a cult hit—the playful lo-fi pop vibe, the offbeat observational lyrics that have come to mark later releases—but feels somehow more complete, more cohesive. Few artists capture twenty-first century life as well as Davidson, images of natural beauty sitting next to wry humour and deadpan observations of our ruined world.</p>

<p>Back in 2019, filmmaker Sara Wylie asked Fiver (AKA Simone Schmidt) if they might contribute music for her new project, <em>A More Radiant Sphere</em>. The hybrid documentary centres on Wylie&#8217;s great uncle Joe Wallace, a Canadian poet and political prisoner shunned in his home nation but celebrated in Eastern Europe and China, exploring how the role of Communists has been mostly excised from Canadian history. Fiver&#8217;s soundtrack furthers this examination, turning a selection of Wallace&#8217;s poems into song alongside instrumental pieces. &#8220;I have always felt a song is worth singing for what wisdom one can discover through its repetition,&#8221; Schmidt explains of the album&#8217;s style, &#8220;be that in beauty, prayer or, in time, prophecy.&#8221; Hopeful, heartfelt and unafraid of nuance, <em>The Joe Wallace Mixtape</em> captures a specific period of Canadian leftist nationalism in all of its passionate imperfection. A movement which threatened to forget its own colonial past in its hurry to attack American imperialism, yet nevertheless dared to imagine the possibility of a society beyond capitalism.</p>

<p>&#8220;I don&#8217;t think they&#8217;re evil, even when they&#8217;re awful / Not totally class conscious, but ultimately good.&#8221; So sings Tyler Jordan on the title track of Good Look&#8217;s <em>Bummer Year</em>, referring to his old high school friends in small town <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/texas/">Texas</a>. The line is indicative of the tension on a record where fondness and sentimentality are constantly challenged by life&#8217;s imperfect reality. A collection of songs willing to hold more than one idea in its head at a time, be it in celebrating close-knit communities while recognising their susceptibility to insular or reactionary turns, or charting the strange relationship between working pride and industrial exploitation. &#8220;Blue-collar&#8221; indie rock can sometimes comes off as inauthentic or condescending, but it is this nuance which allows Good Looks to come across as authentic, and moreover begin to imagine such communities as sites of revolutionary potential for positive change. &#8220;If we&#8217;re gonna make a comeback, we&#8217;re gonna need those people,&#8221; as Jordan concludes on the title track, &#8220;like my friends on the bottom who don&#8217;t know who to fight.&#8221;</p>

<p>“One of the best guides to how to be self-loving is to give ourselves the love we are often dreaming about receiving from others.&#8221; So wrote bell hooks in <em>All About Love</em>, gracefully unmasking the cruelty which internalised trauma can bring. That Joy Guidry released <em>Radical Acceptance</em> in the year the world lost hooks feels like the most fitting testament to her legacy. A clear indication that her work is not only being acted upon but developed further, pushed in new directions. A personal practice brought to life in music, the album sees Guidry combine ambient, jazz and classical styles with direct and often humorous spoken word delivery to short-circuit the self-judgement of which hooks wrote. To connect with the reality of one&#8217;s identity in a way beyond labels, and learn to love it precisely for what it is.</p>

<p>Influenced by a love for sixties and seventies folk, intricate jazz, early soul, and the reggae of her childhood home, the self-titled debut release from <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/florida/">Florida</a>-born, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/new-york/">New York</a>-based June McDoom takes relatively simple folk blueprints and weaves whole worlds of sound around them. Working with partner and collaborator Evan Wright, McDoom’s style feels like a constantly shifting collage of her influences, warm and rich and strangely dream-like. Highlighting her talents as a producer as much as a songwriter, the record is an exercise in texture and atmosphere, shifting from the earthily pastoral to something more spectral, hallucinatory echoes and psychedelic ambient flourishes moving the songs to some other strange plane.</p>

<p>Driven by both the conceptual and intuitional, Stockholm-based composer Kali Malone has made a name pushing the boundaries of the pipe organ. 2019&#8217;s <em>The Sacrificial Code</em> subverted the traditions of the instrument to prove its power was not contingent on a grand, cathedralesque setting. Staying true to her exploratory style, <em>Living Torch</em> sees Malone continue to excavate music for new styles and perspectives, but this time swaps the organ for an altogether more diverse ensemble of instruments, from the trombone and bass clarinet to the boîte à bourdon and Éliane Radigue’s ARP 2500 synthesizer. The result again manages to suggest both academic rigour and unburdened instinct, but ultimately transcends any focus on its intentions as the listener becomes immersed in the soundscape. Some hymn or lament, latent with the suggestion of the sublime, be it total dread or transcendence, silence or all-encompassing sound.</p>

<p>Meaning both “a jab to the face that knocks someone out completely” and someone who raises an alarm, <em>Bellringer</em> is the perfect title for the sophomore album by Linqua Franqa, the project of Athens, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/georgia/">Georgia</a>-based rapper Mariah Parker. Balancing music with work as a linguist, activist, parent and politician, Parker makes razor sharp, socially conscious hip hop that aims to both empower and critique. In provocative, sometimes dark, but always poetic verses, Parker takes on the prison industrial complex, police brutality, exploitative capitalism and mental health issues. There&#8217;s also a stellar guest list, which includes Georgia hip hop talent (like Dope Knife and Wesdaruler) as well as indie rock heavyweights like Jeff Rosenstock, of Montreal and Kishi Bashi, and even legendary civil rights activist Angela Davis. Ultimately, <em>Bellringer</em> is a record that sees music as a tool toward liberation. As Parker puts it “[using] the aesthetic pleasure of hip-hop to educate people about why things are so bad and what can we do about it.”</p>

<p>&#8220;It’s gonna be hard to talk about this when it’s done / Those days of plenty come and gone.&#8221; So opens <em>A Mold For the Bell</em>, the latest album from <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/logan-farmer/">Logan Farmer</a>. The <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/colorado/">Colorado</a> songwriter has long been marked by a willingness to stare straight into the maw of whatever calamity is approaching, as typified by his almost singularly successful depiction of climate dread on 2020&#8217;s <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2020/09/14/logan-farmer-still-no-mother/"><em>Still No Mother</em></a>. The new record might shift its focus away from explicitly environmental concerns, but roots itself in the same shades and colours. As though the promise of impending loss hangs in the air like a fog. &#8220;It’s a full time job, just staying calm / Don&#8217;t read the papers,&#8221; he sings on &#8216;Horsehair&#8217;, but portents of doom reveal themselves all around. Through lines of silver in hair, or the very silence itself. Yet across all of this persists a very human spirit, small hopes flickering in spite of everything. Because what sets the work of Logan Farmer apart from the plethora of other such dark and pessimistic art is the intimacy with which he approaches such themes. There&#8217;s no sublime release to this apocalypse, just people living on through it.</p>

Rooted in a welcoming sense of domesticity, <em>Microcosmos</em> finds a sense of wonder in the infinite detail of our immediate surroundings, gently probing at some pretty big questions without the need for some epic quest. Musically it could be from some long-hidden seventies folksinger (think Joni Mitchell, Michael Hurley), but refuses to fall into many long established tropes. There are hints too of David Berman in the songwriting, which melds philosophical musings with observational images—a bird’s nest at a gas station, rising bread dough—and ultimately decrees that an artist is not doomed to tortured wandering.</p>

<p>In a year of many great albums, it’s hard to imagine one as bold and committed as the self-titled debut by Medicine Singers. Something of a groundbreaking supergroup, the band are the product of collaboration between Algonquin powwow drum outfit Eastern Medicine Singers and Israeli guitarist Yonatan Gat, and also features contributions from ambient music visionary Laraaji, Thor Harris and Christopher Pravdica of Swans, Ikue Mori of no wave icons DNA and trumpeter jaimie branch. Together the group collide traditional powwow and experimental music, resulting in a distinctive and often joyously cathartic experience. Take the colossal ‘Hawk Song’, or the first sudden burst of pure rock n’ roll guitar that comes blazing in near the beginning of ‘Sunrise (Rumble)’. &#8220;These two cultures can work together, and blend together,&#8221; Medicine Singers leader Daryl Black Eagle Jamieson explains, &#8220;to show people how we can work together and make something beautiful.” What emerges is a piece of contemporary art which serves as a map to its own history, following its roots back into a myriad of traditional styles.</p>

<p>&#8220;Listening to <em>Boat Songs</em> by MJ Lenderman is like joining your best friends out on the porch,&#8221; describes author Ashleigh Bryant Phillips in the album&#8217;s liner notes. &#8220;The neighbors might be yelling and the bugs might be biting. But y’all are shooting the shit and letting loose, telling the same old stories again and again.&#8221; There&#8217;s wrestling, basketball, sightings of Dan Marino in a South Carolina cereal aisle. Drained out swimming pools and birds pecking seeds off the ground. But most of all there&#8217;s the masterful knack for combining details small and absurd into something which feels like life as it&#8217;s lived on the ground. Lenderman, much like Phillips herself, represents the contemporary face of a certain type of storyteller. One living on the margins or else in the great rural stretches too often ignored, presenting life back to us with all its shine and sharp edges intact.</p>

<p>Clocking in at under twenty minutes, Posmic&#8217;s <em>Sun Hymns</em> feels like watching an old Super 8 home movie found at the thrift store, unknown people and scenes flashing by, wrapped in nostalgic film grain and warm colours. Comprising of members of several <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/baltimore/">Baltimore</a> and <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/washington-dc/">DC</a> bands (Post Pink, Wildhoney, Ultra Beauty), the outfit make music that collides grungy nineties guitar rock and sixties psych weirdness, resulting in something that feels both fresh and strangely familiar. There are noisy alt-rock jams, incense-scented folk numbers and sunny, easy-going pop, the whole thing adding up to a brief but oh so welcome escape to some other time or place. <em>Sun Hymns</em> might be the sleeper hit of the year, so load it up and bask in its glow.</p>

<p>Described as existing &#8220;at the border of music and sound art,&#8221; and &#8220;produced during a collective process of sound inquiry,&#8221; <em>Réverbérations d&#8217;une crise: une enquête sonore sur le logement à Montréal </em>is a work seeking to evoke a fuller picture of <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/montreal/">Montreal</a>&#8216;s housing crisis, and make audible what is otherwise silent or silenced. Hubert Gendron-Blais (<a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/ce-qui-nous-traverse/">ce qui nous traverse</a>, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/devenir-ensemble/">Devenir-ensemble</a>) leads a collective featuring Aidan Girt (Gospeed You! Black Emperor), Claude Périard (Claude L&#8217;Anthrope), Christine White, Stefan Christoff (Anarchist Mountains) and others, with each track setting out to capture the multifaceted impact of the crisis through political, socio-economic, psychological and existential planes. Take one of Gendron-Blais&#8217;s own offerings &#8216;À la multiplicité fragile d&#8217;une ruelle de Parc-Ex&#8217;, a collection of sounds from the multicultural, working-class neighbourhood Parc-Extension which evokes both the diversity of the space and the growing precarity as gentrification closes in.</p>

<p>Following the thread back from contemporary drone music through a variety of chamber and choral styles, Sarah Davachi&#8217;s <em>Two Sisters </em>is as influenced by medieval sacred music as it is modern minimalism. As though the two forms are not separate entities but the same thing manifest differently across the years—a perpetual attempt to communicate something near inexplicable, some great mystery known only in flashes. Because while spiritual endeavors in music have driven many toward ostentation, Davachi is far more astute. After all, if the mystery shows itself only in glimmers, then what use is show and noise? <em>Two Sisters</em> follows the lead of its forebears and instead turns toward quiet; a hushed, elusive collection of pieces loaded with all the hope, fear and strangeness inherent in that which we cannot fully comprehend.</p>

<p>Listening to <em>Wooden Shoe</em>, the latest release from <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/providence/">Providence</a>, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/rhode-island/">Rhode Island</a> outfit, it&#8217;s difficult to ascertain what exactly is going on. Has the past slipped through a crack in the world, returned as some strange, haunting force? Or have we moved in the other direction entirely? Been transported to some unnamed future where old things have reoccurred as the great wheel turns? Having made their name with debut <em>May Day</em>, reinterpreting songs from the fourteenth century satirical text Roman de Fauve, Silica Gel continue the art song tradition by merging Early folk styles with contemporary (or even futuristic) noise, capturing both the ever-spinning cycles of suffering, exploitation and superstition, as well as the interminable dream that something better might lie just beyond the horizon.</p>

<p>The recipe goes something like this: Take two handfuls of post-hardcore for every one of hip hop, take equal parts punk rock and poetry. Don&#8217;t skimp on the humour, don&#8217;t forget to stir in the grief. Then preheat the oven to fucking furious and roast the whole thing until the smoke alarm goes off. With the myriad of ingredients and processes, Soul Glo&#8217;s <em>Diaspora Problems </em>risks biting off more than it can chew, but with every track it keeps biting, keeps chewing, lets you know there&#8217;s no way it&#8217;s going to blink before you. From the college scam and reselling economy to the false allyship of the white left, no topic is too much for this record. It bites off your head and chews.</p>

<p><a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/tenci/">Tenci</a>&#8216;s 2020 debut <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2020/03/18/tenci-earthquake-serpent/"><em>My Heart Is An Open Field</em></a> was a record of catharsis, with lead Jess Shoman moving beyond pain and trauma via a process of purging. The result was a certain emptiness, a blank space residing where negativity had once lived. Follow-up <em>A Swollen River, A Well Overflowing</em> is an attempt to repopulate this space. A conscious effort to collect the small joys and wonders of the world, and to reposition one&#8217;s relationship with things previously difficult to live with so that they might exist comfortably too. With a sound somewhere between bedroom pop introspection and folk hymn timelessness, each song serves as a spell, as Shoman puts it, to “fill my heart back up.&#8221;</p>

<p>&#8220;It is the same misery that is all around us,&#8221; said Werner Herzog in his 1982 film <em>Burden of Dreams</em>. &#8220;The trees here are in misery, and the birds are in misery. I don&#8217;t think they sing, they just screech in pain.&#8221; <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/titus-andronicus/">Titus Andronicus</a> reach an equally difficult picture of the world on their seventh album, <em>The Will to Live</em>, yet the <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/new-jersey/">New Jersey</a> punk royals thoroughly reject nihilism in the process. Written in the wake of tragedies both personal and global, the album sees lead Patrick Stickles dare to embrace life despite the inevitable pain, coming to understand suffering not as the default form of existence but merely the shadow of life itself. Screeching in pain they might be, but Titus Andronicus are singing too, and it is as loud and heartfelt as anything else they have sung for years.</p>

<p>Even for a band that has shapeshifted throughout its history,<em> Shepherd Head</em> feels like a departure for <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/young-jesus/">Young Jesus</a>. After completing the mathy, jazzy epic <em>Welcome to Conceptual Beach</em> in 2020, the band were burnt out, and lead <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/john-rossiter/">John Rossiter</a> decided to take a different tack. Working primarily alone, armed with a Macbook, a microphone and a newfound patience, he began to piece together songs from found sounds, audio recordings and white noise. The result is, at least stylistically, a glimpse at Young Jesus in a different form—a stripped-back singer-songwriter approach wrapped in meditative electronic pop, more interested in the emotional, or even spiritual, than the cerebral. It’s a record which faces up to fear and grief but somehow feels suffused with hope, a personal, quasi-solo record that feels anything but lonely (with cameos from friends dotted throughout, including collaborations with Tomberlin and Arswain). As we wrote in a preview of lead single ‘Ocean’ back in the summer, <em>Shepherd Head</em> is “a tapestry both vulnerable and tender, where great loss and transcendence are not so different after all.”</p>
