Crabapple are a four piece from the Bay Area of San Francisco led by Sandra Alayon and made up of members of Sour Patch, Joyride, no babies and Dear Marje. The band, who describe themselves as “equal parts coffee, feelings & pop”, recently released a new four song EP, further out, and it’s safe to say we’re fans.

Opener ‘same old ocean’ melds spiky post punk with sincere vocals, the verses descending into a manic thrash of drums and guitar which mimic the themes of desperation and distraction running through the track.

“When you were gone
I tried to move so quickly,
I tired to hide the way that I was thinking
how to
move out of my head”

‘ask me’ follows a similar blueprint, part hectic punk, part tender feelings, while the title track begins much more sedate, with vocals front and centre, creating something akin to acts such as Two White Cranes. “I’m far away”, Alayon sings, “an ordinary girl in a big massive world and there’s nothing to say, we always were the same”. ‘so much to say’ closes things with a short and sweet rush of lo-fi pop, just under two minutes that let you forget about your troubles for a while, that make you believe that things are going to be okay.

“There’s so much to do, so much to say
I’d rather sail away
listen to the voices in the other room
let’s pretend that nothing ever ends”

You can buy Further Out now on a name-your-price basis from the Crabapple Bandcamp page.
