Sad Souls is Ann Arbor’s Tom Auby and Apeiron his fourth release, following hot on the heals of Object of Perception, Precious Paragon and Forest Loops, all released during 2011. It’s a meditative piece, full of looping guitars and judging by an interview Auby gave with Dénouements back in December, that’s exactly what he was aiming for. “I wanted the songs to fade in and out of existence from a common space. I think melancholy is a really nice thing sometimes. While the other records were born out of a sense of anxiety or sadness, this one is a lot more reflective and contemplative. A lot of it is inspired just by how quickly time seems to pass to me, and I want Apeiron to be a record people can turn to when they feel anxious or worried, and when they forget how boundless the world actually is.”

Lofty aims but Apeiron leaves you time and space to just settle down. It’s the musical equivalent of creature comforts and we all need some of those.
