Lately we’ve been trying to do roughly a post a day here at Wake the Deaf, which is a huge increase in output compared to our usual lazy standards. Because of this, we thought it might be a nice idea to gather up all of the artists we feature in a month into a handy little mixtape for your listening pleasure. Perfect if you haven’t managed to keep up on what we’ve been writing day-to-day.

Our January 2014 mix is a little light on numbers as during the first fortnight or so we were busy with our year-end lists and whatnot. But there are still thirteen great tracks for you to check out. As always, there’s a variety of genres so you should find something you like.

Fire Mountain – All Dies Down

When we wrote about Fire Mountain’s Of The Dust EP back in 2012 we mentioned that they were planning to put out an LP in the future. That future is now, with the Alabama band recently recording their debut album, All Dies Down. However, they need some help to cover the production/printing costs, and have set up a funding page to aid the process.

You can listen to some demos from the album on their Soundcloud page (my favourite is below), and their older material is available on Bandcamp. If you are a fan of alt-folk/Americana then you should gives these guys a listen.

You can back the album (and get yourself some rather cool prizes in return) via this Pledge page. I think this kind of project is where the funding schemes work best – this isn’t some fanciful attempt at getting some cash but rather an advanced pre-order that helps the band cover the costs via sales. It’s a win-win.

Fire Mountain – Of The Dust

Fire Mountain are a group of guys from Troy, Alabama, who combine folk sensibilities with an undercurrent of rock to form an impressively cohesive and professional sound. Of The Dust, their 2nd EP, demonstrates this perfectly. A lovely mix of slow thoughtful songwriting (such as ‘Why Can’t I Stay’) and finger-clicking, feet-stomping quicker songs (see: ‘Ghosts’ and my personal favourite ‘No One’s Help’).

The band plan to record a full-length this winter with the award-winning songwriter Arthur Alligood producing. If the accomplished EP is anything to go by, this record is definitely one to keep an eye on.
