Following on from debut EP <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2024/09/26/country-girl-i-like-that/"><em>meet me at the fountain</em></a>, a richly nostalgic release <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2025/01/16/weekly-listening-january-2025-1/">we described</a> as &#8220;reflecting on the joys of a rose-tinted past, looking to preserve that sense of possibility and fun in the face of life&#8217;s inevitable progression,&#8221; the new track again offers an earnest if dusky sound which presents the on-set of autumn as something to be celebrated. As though, having been battered by a summer heat for months, the October winds promise to arrive as something of a balm, country girl&#8217;s trademark fondness transforming what might normally be considered a melancholic time into something to be savoured.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Greg Freeman &#8211; Salesman</h3>
<p>The word-of-mouth success of 2022 debut <em>I Looked Out </em>earned Burlington, Vermont-based artist <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/greg-freeman/">Greg Freeman</a> something of a cult following. His twangy style of indie rock, evocative songwriting and strong sense of place that reflects his home of the northeastern US won lots of fans, and expectations for his sophomore album <em>Burnover</em>, released last week via <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/canvasback-music">Canvasback Music</a> and <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/transgressive/">Transgressive Records</a> have been sky high. A steady stream of solid singles, like the &#8220;assured and surprising verbose&#8221; <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2025/06/02/weekly-listening-june-2025-1/">&#8216;Curtain&#8217;</a> allayed any concerns of a sophomore slump, and final single &#8216;Salesman&#8217; is further proof that Freeman is firing on all cylinders. What he describes as &#8220;technically a serious song about something sad,&#8221; it&#8217;s actually one of the record&#8217;s livelier tracks, recorded almost entirely live with Freeman&#8217;s touring band to capture a sense of immediate energy.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Home Videos &#8211; the devil&#8217;s credit score</h3>
<p>Described as &#8220;a tape obsessed band of slackers,&#8221; Rochester&#8217;s <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/Home-Videos">Home Videos</a> has evolved across its lifetime. Debut EP (the fittingly titled <em>EP</em>) featured nothing but two acoustic guitars, a four track recorder and a whole lot of tape hiss, though the project has gradually blossomed into a full band. New album <em>Home Taping is Killing Music</em>, recently released via <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/raincoated-records">Raincoated Records</a>, shows just what this change means, Home Videos retaining the intimacy that marked their early material but now capable of far greater depth. A reimagining of a track from the prior EP, single &#8216;the devil&#8217;s credit score&#8217; offers the perfect comparison. None of the texture or tenderness is lost, but where the original never puntured its fuzzy wrappings, this version of the song carries a tangible weight, the emo underpinnings of the Home Videos sound fully apparent as the song rises towards its big, cathartic climax.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Jacob Faurholt &#8211; Painfully Alone</h3>
<p>The first single from his forthcoming self-titled new album, ‘Painfully Alone’ finds <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/denmark">Danish</a> songwriter <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/jacob-faurholt">Jacob Faurholt</a> stripping things back to the bare bones. Ever prolific, Faurholt has been making music for decades, releasing twelve records under his own name alongside work with experimental project Crystal Shipsss and Danish language outlet Statisk Støj. But the new album sees him breaking new ground. Recorded in “the quiet corners of his home studio,” it finds him at his most restrained and vulnerable, resulting in what he describes as “an intimate portrait of existential dread, inner turmoil, and fragile love.” ‘Painfully Alone’ proves the perfect introduction, a stark and intimate affair that builds from plucked guitar and Faurholt&#8217;s solitary vocals into something almost romantic, as his wife adds her voice too and they sing together &#8220;Alone, with you.&#8221;</p>

<p>Born in Fort Lauderdale and now based in Nashville via Boston and LA, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/lydia-luce">Lydia Luce</a> has been on something of a journey in life, though her forthcoming full-length <em>Mammoth </em>centres on a journey of a different kind. One, that is, out of suffering, charting the path of recovery from chronic pain and the hard-won bonds which came with it. Lead single &#8216;Quiet&#8217; embodies the tenderness with which Luce takes on this challenge. A song all about the slow process of learning to not only tolerate silence but embrace its power within a noisy world. Be that finding healing in the stillness of nature or coming to appreciate the beauty of sitting in quiet with the people you love. <h3 style="text-align: center;">Mappe Of &#8211; Terraforming Moons</h3>
<p>We are inching closer to the release of <em>Afterglades</em>, the new record from <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/mappe-of">Mappe Of</a> (the project of Toronto singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Tom Meikle). Following the weighty &#8216;A Scourge Laid Upon The Earth&#8217;, which <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2025/07/15/weekly-listening-july-2025-3/">we wrote about back in June</a>, Meikle has unveiled another single ahead of the record&#8217;s September release date. Titled &#8216;Terraforming Moons&#8217;, it&#8217;s a song that takes very personal difficulties and sends them spinning into the cosmos, a gentle, folk-inflected indie pop song with an almost sci-fi twist. &#8220;A few years ago my partner got really sick,&#8221; Meikle explains. &#8220;I felt helpless, despite doing everything I could to make things better. I thought there was something romantic and terrifying about the idea of going as far as terraforming a planet to create the right conditions for a person you love to live.”</p>

<p>It is fair to say UK-born, NZ-raised and LA-based songwriter <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/Ny-Oh">Ny Oh</a> has travelled a lot across her life and career. Be it fronting jazz outfit Neon Gru, collaborating with the likes of Margo Price and Madison Cunningham or performing as part of Harry Styles&#8217;s band across stadium tours. But her new single &#8216;Aperture&#8217; is all about coming home. Written in Aotearoa and developed with producer Jonathan Wilson (Father John Misty, Angel Olsen, Conor Oberst), the song unfurls with the distinctive mix of dreaminess and clarity that any place dear to the heart comes to possess. &#8220;I deserved a glove touch / Softness played it school yard rough,&#8221; Oh sings in one verse, balancing the allure of the familiar in all of its soft comfort and with a tactile level of detail. &#8220;Light flooded in / Gentle and warm / Reveal where I came from.&#8221; Watch the video by Victor Grossling and Anna Anderson below:</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Pickle Darling &#8211; Congratulations Champion</h3>
<p>We have written about <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/Pickle-Darling">Pickle Darling</a> a couple of times in recent months, songs which heralded a new era for Aotearoa/<a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/New-Zealand">New Zealand</a>-based producer and multi-instrumentalist Lukas Mayo. First the Robyn, Cher and Madonna-inspired pop gem &#8216;Massive Everything&#8217;, what we called “a love song with all the complications left in,&#8221; then the sprawling &#8216;<a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2025/07/10/pickle-darling-human-bean-instruction-manual/">Human Bean Instruction Manual</a>&#8216;. &#8220;A track perhaps not direct in terms of style,&#8221; we wrote, &#8220;but every bit as forthright as its predecessor when it comes to the message it carries,&#8221; urging us to stand together against the multitude of threats which haunt our present moment. With the album&#8217;s release via <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/father-daughter-records">Father/Daughter Records</a> a matter of weeks away, Pickle Darling is back with &#8216;Congratulations Champion&#8217;, a sub-ninety-second single which might sit at the opposite end of the spectrum in terms of runtime yet nevertheless packs an equal emotional punch. A collage of lines collected from Mayo&#8217;s phone, the song pieces together incomplete, ostensibly mismatched thoughts into a satisfying whole. &#8220;An Oscar for Jane Campion / I found a note written in crumbs inside a biscuit tin,&#8221; as one couplet goes. Or the final verse, which sums up the strange, playful and completely sincere style of <em>Bots</em> as a whole:</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Silver Synthetic &#8211; Happy Ever After</h3>
<p>Back in March, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/Silver-Synthetic">Silver Synthetic</a> released their second full-length <em>Rosalie</em> on <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/curation-records">Curation Records</a>, an album which saw the New Orleans outfit push the self-described &#8216;Home Fi&#8217; style of their debut (a self-titled LP released with <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/Third-Man-Records">Third Man Records</a> in 2021) towards the full richness and confidence of classic indie rock. The label had wanted the specific song &#8216;Happy Ever After&#8217; to be the lead single, though the band themselves feared the track was something of an outlier and ended up not featuring it on the record at all. Whether or not that was an error, you can now decide for yourself, because fast forward several months Silver Synthetic have released the track as part of a double single, <em>Happy Ever After / Say The Wrong Word</em>. <h3 style="text-align: center;">SQORE &#8211; INTERNAL///VS.EXTERNAL[forces]</h3>
<p>Recording under the moniker <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/Sqore">SQORE</a>, New York-based producer, multi-instrumentalist and sound artist Em Sgouros blends field recordings with synthesized sounds to create small worlds of their own. Last week saw the release of <em>reGENERATION</em>, the sophomore SQORE EP, via <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/ambient-Pasta">Ambient Pasta</a>, a collection of three tracks they say &#8220;explore the struggle of generating a new reality within yourself in the midst of fear and anger and ask as humans, &#8216;what are we capable of?'&#8221; Centrepiece &#8216;INTERNAL///VS.EXTERNAL[forces]&#8217; is a good place to start, a song which sees field samples and drones play across waves of digital strings and flourishing arpeggios, resulting in something that feels part organic and part virtual. The track confronts fear and the strangling grip it can hold on both a personal and societal level, offering a sense of meditative understanding as a path towards joy and the regeneration of the record&#8217;s title.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Described by Lukas Mayo as &#8216;maybe the first kind of ‘pop’ song I’ve ever made,&#8217; ‘Massive Everything’ is not just a new song from <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/pickle-darling/">Pickle Darling</a>, but an introduction to a new stage in the evolution of the project.&#8221; So we <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2025/06/09/weekly-listening-june-2025-2/">wrote back in June</a>, describing how the the Aotearoa/<a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/New-Zealand">New Zealand</a>-based producer and multi-instrumentalist has decided to take the lead from Robyn, Cher and <em>Ray of Light</em>-era Madonna, losing a certain degree of the poetry and playfulness which marked previous releases to &#8220;instead embrace the exhilaration of being wholly direct.&#8221; The resulting track, we continued, &#8220;is a love song with all the complications left in. Moreover, one not attenuated by the attached pain and personal baggage but conversely made larger. A picture of a love substantial enough to bear the weight accumulated through living.&#8221;</p>
<p>However, as latest single &#8216;Human Bean Instruction Manual&#8217; demonstrates, this new era of Pickle Darling does not jettison the idiosyncratic charm which has won the project so many fans. Nor does a commitment to forthright communication elide any sense of ambiguity. Indeed, this is a song all about such ambiguity, and how learning to embrace the doubt inherent within growing up in this strange present. “I just turned thirty and there’s no damn manual for this,” as Mayo explains. “Transitioning out of being a young adult in 2025 is like suddenly landing on a hostile planet our bodies haven’t adapted to.”</p>
<p>As if to mirror this tangle of uncertainty, the song sprawls to near seven fuzzy minutes. A track perhaps not direct in terms of style, but every bit as forthright as its predecessor when it comes to the message it carries. As Mayo concludes: &#8220;Everything we thought was important doesn’t mean shit. Everything is out to attack us, so all we can do is form our alliances and hang on tight.”</p>

<p>Back in <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2022/06/10/weekly-listening-june-2022-1/">June</a> we mention <em>Garbage Island</em>, the latest album from Mathias Kom&#8217;s <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/the-burning-hell/">The Burning Hell</a> on <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/bbisland/">BB*Island</a>. Making &#8220;everything from tongue-in-cheek anti-folk to racing indie rock,&#8221; Kom and co. offered what we described as &#8220;a bright and mischievous ode to a pre-apocalyptic world.&#8221; Now the outfit has teamed up with <a href="https://joe-nicolosi.com/">Joe Nicolosi</a> for a brand new video for the track &#8216;All I Need&#8217; to further develop these themes, producing what&#8217;s been described as &#8220;a cross between WALL-E, Blade Runner and The Brave Little Toaster.&#8221; And if that sounds like a bizarre blend of the playful and dystopian, then Nicolosi has done his job. <h3 style="text-align: center;">Cinder Well – Two Heads, Grey Mare</h3>
<p>This coming April sees the release of <em>Cadence</em>, the new album by Amelia Baker’s <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/cinder-well/">Cinder Well</a>. The record promises to build on Baker’s signature stark and doom-laden experimental folk, leavened with more expansive arrangements that evoke the early 70s heyday of <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/los-angeles/">LA</a>’s Laurel Canyon. Indeed, California, where Baker grew up, is one of two coastal focal points of the record. The other is her adopted home of Country Clare in Western <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/ireland/">Ireland</a>, a region whose folklore inspires lead single ‘Two Heads, Grey Mare’. It’s a song about the shape-shifting selkie (a seal able to shed its skin to become human) and the mysterious ancient power of the moon and the tides. <h3 style="text-align: center;">DM Stith &#8211; Doomed!</h3>
<p>Taken from forthcoming LP <em>Fata Morgana</em> on Historical Fiction Records, &#8216;Doomed!&#8217; is the latest single from DM Stith, a track which finds the singer-songwriter in new terrain. Written after moving from <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/brooklyn/">Brooklyn</a> to <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/rochester/">Rochester</a> on the shore of Lake Ontario, the song feels suffused with fresh perspective and creative clarity. &#8220;Where am I?&#8221; he asks in the delicate opening line, before answering himself, &#8220;I wandered upstate rising up / evaporating out of my life.&#8221; Stith&#8217;s music has always held a diaphanous quality, but here the airiness feels more effortless than melancholy, Thomas Bartlett&#8217;s production adding an impressionistic elegance. That said, as the title suggests, &#8216;Doomed!&#8217; is not without anxiety. It&#8217;s symptomatic of a record that, despite its lighter tone and subtle pop sensibilities, is ultimately a deep and candid exercise in self exploration.</p>

Created in the last two years following a move from New Orleans to Santa Fe, the record promises to be yet another advance on Rose&#8217;s already impressive catalogue, introducing pop hooks and a newfound sense of confidence, even as it continues to narrate the messily graceful stories of a life in progress. Lead single &#8216;Chet Baker&#8217; shows this off expertly—a song written from the depths of a memory rabbit hole induced by a random DM on social media, telling the story of a decade old dive bar and car crash in Ann Arbor, Michigan. <h3 style="text-align: center;">Floodlights &#8211; Lessons Learnt</h3>
<p>We&#8217;ve been fans of <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/melbourne/">Melbourne</a>&#8216;s <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/floodlights/">Floodlights</a> for a couple of years now, taken by their evocative writing and fusion of post-punk, indie rock and a subtle dusty twang. The band have recently announced a brand new record, <em>Painting of My Time</em>, an album which promises to be both a continuation and an evolution of their signature sound. Latest single &#8216;Lessons Learnt&#8217; is the perfect illustration, adding layers of additional instrumentation to combine cathartic rock &#8216;n roll directness with post-punk atmosphere and the creative flair of art pop. As usual, the lyrics are both conscientious and furious, exploring themes of empty promises and recurrent mistakes that can be read at the personal level or as a commentary on Australia (or indeed the world) as a whole.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Lucy Kruger &amp; The Lost Boys &#8211; Heaving</h3>
<p>A self-described &#8220;art pop ambient noise band&#8221; based in <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/berlin/">Berlin</a>, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/lucy-kruger/">Lucy Kruger</a> &amp; The Lost Boys make music that&#8217;s full of dramatic atmosphere and enigmatic mystery. Following a trilogy of albums released over the last few years (which you can find on <a href="https://lucykruger.bandcamp.com/">Bandcamp</a>), the band have announced a new LP, titled <em>Heaving</em>, which promises to bring a new physicality to their sound. &#8220;I wanted this album to be less ethereal somehow,&#8221; Kruger describes. &#8220;Rooted in the depths, of my body, of my lover’s body, of the earth, where it is dark and wet [&#8230;] a lot of the lyrics deal with touch, smell, taste. The body, and all it holds, imagined intimately, almost as landscape, but also for what it is.&#8221; The single and title track is a great example, a dark and magnetic piece full of disembodied sighs and distorted guitars. <p>Led by Chris Natividad (also of <a href="https://marbledeye.bandcamp.com/track/dirty-water">Marbled Eye</a>), Public Interest are a post-punk band from <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/oakland">Oakland</a>, CA. Although they operate at the dense and gloomy end of the spectrum, their music has a dark and driving pop momentum that brings a glorious anarchic energy. Later this spring the band will release a new record <em>Spiritual Pollution</em> on German label Erste Theke Tontraeger and lead single &#8216;Undone&#8217; gives a taste of what to expect. A dingy and sinuous slice of post-punk that&#8217;s full of razor-sharp guitars and pounding percussion.</p>

Written in the aftermath of losing a parent, the record is one born of grief and the long process of dealing with bereavement, and the new track highlights the grace and heart with which Alva approaches such themes. A slow, lush song of patient richness, coloured by the assured certainty of love but a sense of searching too. As though working through the maddening ambiguity of loss in all of its guises, demanding an answer one way or another.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">ghost orchard &#8211; Sweet Song</h3>
<p>Last month we wrote about ghost orchard, the project of Sam Hall from Grand Rapids, Michigan, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2022/10/03/weekly-listening-october-2022-1/">describing single &#8216;rest&#8217;</a> as &#8220;a picture of calm and patience amid loss, where the quiet stillness holds the latent warmth of things now gone.&#8221; The song was the opener from the debut ghost orchard LP, <em>rainbow music</em>, which came out last week via <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/winspear/">Winspear</a>. The album is a meditation on themes of home and change and the tangible echoes that remain when people move on, preaching patience and acceptance in a world that seems determined to rush by. This atmosphere is captured nicely on penultimate track &#8216;Sweet Song&#8217;, a bittersweet bedroom pop song that holds much tenderness and feeling in its sub two minute runtime.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">g. spinn &#8211; We Might</h3>
<p>Based in Tucson, AZ, g. spinn is a recording project unafraid to push the boundaries of genre. Since its formation in 2018, he has released music across the spectrum, from meditative ambient album <em>summer&#8217;s long gone</em> to singles more at home in hip hop, pop and indie rock brackets. New EP <em>Nostalgia Melancholy </em>draws from various points of this oeuvre, with single &#8216;We Might&#8217; showing off the hybrid ambient-folk style. Wistful field recordings and warm acoustic guitar paint a mood fitting for the EP&#8217;s title, and the track&#8217;s pivot to lush ambient tones in its middle section only further cements the sound&#8217;s reflective quality.</p>

<p>&#8220;In a time of tremendous difficulty I tried to make something life-affirming: grieving songs which look toward joy.&#8221; So explains <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/seattle/">Seattle</a> songwriter Joan Kelsey of new album <em>Standing Out On The Grass</em>, out later this week on <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/dear-life-records/">Dear Life Records</a>. A collection of songs written in the aftermath of loss, the days and months when grief arrives fresh with each moment, a thing at once personal and universal and impossible to ever quite overcome. But as single &#8216;Survivor&#8217; shows, Kelsey does not try to conquer this sadness but instead place it within a wider context. <h3 style="text-align: center;">Mui Zyu &#8211; Ghost with a Peach Skin</h3>
<p>Next February sees the release of <em>Rotten Bun for an Eggless Century</em>, a brand new album from <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/london/">London</a>&#8216;s Mui Zyu (AKA Eva Liu of Dama Scout) on <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/fatherdaughter-records/">Father/Daughter Records</a>, and lead single &#8216;Ghost with a Peach Skin&#8217; gives a hint as to what to expect. &#8220;This song is about leaving your former self and entering your new peach skin,&#8221; as Mui Zyu explains. &#8220;Peaches are considered a symbol of longevity and even immortality in Chinese culture. The protagonist has overcome enemies and has bruises to prove the damage.&#8221; The track achieves the effect sonically, the sound itself bruised by distortion even as Zyu&#8217;s vocals progress with a calm confidence, the voice of a protagonist who is stepping out from the past and into something new. <p>Ahead of upcoming EP <em>Shudder Pt. I</em>, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/philippa-zawe/">Philippa Zawe</a> has shared brand new single, &#8216;Would You Lean.&#8217;  Writing of previous release <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2017/08/24/bright-sparks-vol-4/"><em>Road of Hope</em></a>, we described Zawe&#8217;s work as a combination of &#8220;folk and soul&#8230; built around her versatile voice,&#8221; the delivery &#8220;switching from casual conversational comments to strikingly effecting croons to produce something that ebbs and flows with human warmth.&#8221; The new track is no less impressive in this regard, though builds on previous releases with an increasingly rich arrangement of instruments. <h3 style="text-align: center;">Sassyhiya &#8211; I had a thought</h3>
<p>Rising from the ashes of cult LGBTQ punks Barry, Sassyhiya is the project of <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/london/">London</a>-based partners Kathy Wright and Helen Skinner. Recorded during lockdown, their debut EP <em>gum demos</em> introduced the irreverent charm of their punky, poppy sound. But now with the addition of Pablo Paganotto of Punching Swans (drums) and Neiloy Mookherjee (guitar), Sissyhiya are now a full fledged live band. New EP <em>Live at Paper Dress Vintage</em> captures this newly charged form in all its idiosyncratic fun. Opener &#8216;I had a thought&#8217; is as good an introduction as any, adding scrappy attitude to the original, taking the angles of post-punk and bending them into off-kilter shapes, leading to something somehow both laidback and volatile.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Thavoron &#8211; Twin Sized Bed</h3>
<p>Back in April, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/Seattle">Seattle</a>-based songwriter Thavoron shared single &#8217;18&#8217; on <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/trailing-twelve-records/">Trailing Twelve Records</a>, a tender and intimate track which explored the queer experience with dreamlike warmth. The song was relatively stripped back with its careful arrangement of flute, saxophone and guitar, but latest single &#8216;Twin Sized Bed&#8217; leans more fully into the minimalist folk style. Built on stark guitar and gently emotive vocals, it&#8217;s a song concerning the often difficult process of coming to understand and accept yourself brought to life with all the stark solitude of such an experience.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Jackie Cohen &#8211; Ghost Story</h3>
<p>Back in 2020, amid a personal crisis, Jackie Cohen found herself asking whatever powers might exist for a sign that things would work out alright in the end. At that moment, a large moth swooped in and committed self-immolation via the oil lamp at Cohen&#8217;s side. The incident came to inform <em>Pratfall</em>, an album recently released via <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/earth-libraries/">Earth Libraries</a> which proffers the value of giving oneself up to tension and turmoil rather than fighting against it. To reach for catharsis, find sublime release in motion, heat and light. Single &#8216;Ghost Story&#8217; weaves an entirely different story to that of the moth, but the abrupt and decisive beauty of its act remains. &#8220;It&#8217;s a song about annihilation and acceptance,&#8221; Cohen explains. &#8220;It&#8217;s hopeless and serene&#8230; Essentially, if you wanna wake up, you&#8217;re gonna have to jump.&#8221;</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Marlais &#8211; Out of the Window</h3>
<p>Recording under the moniker Marlais, Michael Culme-Seymour draws upon British and Irish folk traditions to create reimaginings of old songs. Tales he can step inside and live within, if only for a moment. Out via Treibender Teppich Records, new album <em>Stream of Forms</em> is a collection of such reworkings, its traditional instruments supported by digital choirs and electronics. Single &#8216;Out of the Window&#8217; demonstrates how Marlais evades any sense of anachronism or irony in this practise, the sound coalescing into a convincing whole, the emotions explored readily transposed onto a new place and period. &#8220;Time and time again I am amazed at the cut-throat nature of traditional songs,&#8221; Culme-Seymour explains. &#8220;How hopes and dreams can be dashed in one line or couplet.&#8221;</p>

<p>Ahead of a forthcoming EP, and with a joint tour of the UK and Ireland on the horizon, songwriters Melanie MacLaren and Lorkin O&#8217;Reilly have released new single, &#8216;Clearance Aisle&#8217;. It&#8217;s a duet which allows both artists to display their storytelling chops and knack for conjuring intimate emotion. The track is set within two distinct spaces, the mundanity of real life, as represented by the Walmart clearance aisle, but also the less tangible plane of hopes and regrets. Just how pleasant and welcoming either of these places prove varies day to day, but the truth at the heart of &#8216;Clearance Aisle&#8217; is that we have no choice but to inhabit both, day after day.</p>

<p>This summer saw Queen Kwong release their latest album, <em>Couples Only</em>, on Sonic Ritual. It&#8217;s a record which sees Carré Kwong Callaway confront the despair of loss and deception with caustic anger, its ominous nocturnal tones conjuring a noir-like combo of swagger and danger. Single &#8216;Sad Man&#8217; is the perfect introduction, showing off both the wrath and wry humour of the album, and a new video directed by Joe Cardamone and starring Johnny Knoxville as the titular sad man takes inspiration from Abel Ferrara&#8217;s <em>Bad Lieutenant</em> to further elevate this heady blend.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Remember Sports &#8211; Leap Day</h3>
<p><a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/philadelphia/">Philadelphia</a>&#8216;s Remember Sports returned this month with <em>Leap Day</em>, a brand new four-song EP on <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/fatherdaughter-records/">Father/Daughter Records</a>. With a slightly less frantic tempo than the sound they&#8217;ve perfected over four records, the release offers a more reflective, patient side to the band, though do not be fooled. The emotional ferocity and immediacy that has so long marked Remember Sports has not been lost but redirected. Their energies channelled into a newly layered sound with drum machine, electronics and distortion complimenting the pop rock anthems we&#8217;ve come to love.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Ruby Gill &#8211; I&#8217;m gonna die with this frown on my face</h3>
<p>Last year we wrote about <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/south-africa/">South Africa</a>-born, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/melbourne/">Melbourne</a>/Naarm-based artist Ruby Gill, describing single &#8216;<a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2021/08/30/ruby-gill-you-should-do-this-for-a-living/">You Should Do This For a Living</a>&#8216; as &#8220;setting its sights on the overbearing, patronising force of male entitlement,&#8221; and &#8220;aris[ing] from a very personal situation but end[ing] up speaking to a far wider experience.&#8221; Gill has now released her debut full-length <em>I&#8217;m gonna die with this frown on my face</em>, and the title track shows that the same combination of fury and compassion underlines these songs too. &#8220;I&#8217;m gonna die with this frown on my face / they&#8217;re going to lower me down,&#8221; she sings in the opening lines. &#8220;Asking why I&#8217;ve been this angry all of my days / even when you came around / and I don&#8217;t have the answers.&#8221; Check out the video directed and edited by Samuel H. <h3 style="text-align: center;">Yara Asmar &#8211; it&#8217;s always october on sunday</h3>
<p>Yara Asmar is a multi-instrumentalist, video artist and puppeteer based in Beirut who recently unveiled her debut release on Brighton label Hive Mind Records. Titled <em>Home Recordings 2018 &#8211; 2021</em>, the album is a collection of pieces Asmar recorded to cassette and her phone in the last few years, utilising a range of instruments from piano and synths to deconstructed music boxes and an old accordion she found in her grandparents&#8217; attic. Add in field recordings of Lebanese hymns sung in churches across the country and you&#8217;ve got an ambient/classical collection quite unlike any other. Opening track &#8216;it&#8217;s always october on sunday&#8217; is a good place to start, its pensive atmosphere capturing something about the record as a whole. As the label put it, &#8220;The atmosphere of melancholy that pervades the album should be familiar to anyone living in the twenty-first century.&#8221;</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Apollo Ghosts &#8211; Spilling Yr Guts</h3>
<p><a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/vancouver">Vancouver</a>&#8216;s Apollo Ghosts made a splash in 2010 with their Polaris-nominated record, <em>Mount Benson</em>, though seemingly disbanded in 2013 as lead Adrian Teacher moved on to found COOL TV and other projects. But stories of their demise turned out to be exaggerated as Apollo Ghosts returned in 2019 with <em>Living Memory</em>, and the comeback appears to be a lasting one as this month saw the release of brand new album <em>Pink Tiger</em> on <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/youve-changed-records/">You&#8217;ve Changed Records</a>. Single &#8216;Spilling Yr Guts&#8217; is just one of twenty-two bright and inventive tracks, but its fresh, buoyant rhythm serves as the perfect point of entry for those looking to be swept away.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">A Starving Viking &#8211; Leaves</h3>
<p>The moniker of <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/connecticut/">Connecticut</a>-based songwriter Matt Jarrett, A Starving Viking is a folk project which primarily relies on an intimately simple balance of guitar and vocals. His debut record <em>Semblance</em> was released in 2019 via Resonating Wood Recordings, though in anticipation of a new EP the label has released an amended version, now titled <em>reSemblance</em>. Single &#8216;Leaves&#8217; is a great introduction to <em>A Starving Viking</em>&#8216;s patient and kind-hearted sound, the melancholy of its murmured style counterbalanced by an ever-present compassion.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Fake Fruit &#8211; No Mutuas</h3>
<p>Just over a year ago, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/oakland/">Oakland</a>, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/california/">California</a> indie rock band Fake Fruit released a <a href="https://fakefruitmusic.bandcamp.com/album/fake-fruit">self-titled album</a> on <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/rocks-in-your-head-records/">Rocks In Your Head Records</a>. Lead by guitarist/vocalist Hannah D’Amato, the band draw on classic post-punk to create something fresh and often acerbic, drawing on the frustration and general weirdness of 21st century living. A standout was single &#8216;No Mutuals&#8217;, a song that rallies against empty, point-scoring social interactions (what they call &#8220;Cool Guy Syndrome&#8221;) and now Fake Fruit have returned with a reworking of the track that adds an extra layer of attitude and translates the lyrics into Spanish. &#8220;This recording feels true to the original, but it’s sporting new haircut energy, an extra spring in its step and feels more aligned with how it sounds when played live,&#8221; D&#8217;Amato explains. &#8220;Plus it just feels good to scream in Spanish.&#8221; Check it out below:</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Greet Death &#8211; Panic Song</h3>
<p>Following on from 2019&#8217;s majestic <em>New Hell</em>, Flint&#8217;s Greet Death have spent the past few months unveiling a series of new singles. The subdued &#8216;I Hate Everything&#8217; drew the listener into reserved yet resentful frame of mind, the familiar Greet Death weight hovering just out of view. &#8216;You Love is Alcohol&#8217; introduced a woozy country vibe, &#8216;Punishment Existence&#8217; simmered with latent intensity too. So the manner in which &#8216;Panic Song&#8217; bathes the listener in its gauzy textures and insistent energy feels something like the deferred release promised on the previous tracks. Even if the release is excessive and all-consuming with its adrenaline-filled shakes.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Jack Keyes &#8211; Gray Balloons</h3>
<p>Last year we wrote about <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/kentucky/">Kentucky</a> artist <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/jack-keyes/">Jack Keyes</a> and his upcoming record, <em>Dissolving in Dusk</em>. Single &#8216;Nowhere&#8217; introduced a sound &#8220;wrapped in an easy-going sincerity that holds both melancholy and fondness,&#8221; and latest track &#8216;Gray Balloons&#8217; is similarly conflicted. Again based around the simplicity of acoustic guitar, the single confronts a difficult situation with tender charm. &#8220;This song was written after my girlfriend had her visa revoked,&#8221; Keyes explains. &#8220;She had to very suddenly leave our town in Kentucky to go back to her family nearly 10,000 miles away. In our last days together, I wanted to be happy and celebrate the good times, while also mourning a future loss.&#8221;</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Kelly Hoppenjans &#8211; Stain</h3>
<p>We&#8217;ve previously described the work of <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/nashville/">Nashville</a> singer-songwriter <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/kelly-hoppenjans/">Kelly Hoppenjans</a> as &#8220;Channeling the spirit of riot grrrl while maintaining a folk sensibility,&#8221; with debut <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2019/09/04/bright-sparks-vol-28/"><em>OK, I Feel Better</em></a> representing &#8220;music of empowerment, facing up to expectations and staring them down.&#8221; Taken from new EP,<em> Can&#8217;t Get the Dark Out</em>, latest single &#8216;Stain&#8217; is a direct follow-up to a single from that record, a kind of antidote to the toxic headspace &#8216;Band-Aid Girl&#8217; asked Hoppenjans to re-enter every time she played it. As she puts it: &#8220;I decided to write a song, inspired by the same relationship, that I could perform after &#8216;Band-Aid Girl&#8217; to lift me out of that funk.&#8221;</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Kraków Loves Adana &#8211; Open The Door</h3>
<p>Last year <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/hamburg/">Hamburg</a>&#8216;s dream pop duo <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/krakow-loves-adana/">Kraków Loves Adana</a> released <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2021/09/08/krakow-loves-adana-follow-the-voice/"><em>Follow the Voice</em></a>, a record which &#8220;in which the boundaries between physical reality, virtual reality and dreams began to merge and blur.&#8221; However the sometimes there is more to a song than the single take which makes it to the record, and new EP <em>Swim in the Blue </em>reimagines three tracks to allow them to exist in a different form. &#8220;I wanted to revisit these three pieces from a different perspective,&#8221; Deniz Çiçek explains, &#8220;never imagining that the songs would develop a whole new life of their own as a result.&#8221; A reworking of &#8216;Dream House&#8217;, &#8216;Open The Door&#8217; is a perfect example of how these different spins manifest, with the sparkling synths toned down in favour of a fuller bodied sound.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Laura Loriga &#8211; Passes the Flame</h3>
<p>Born in Bologna and now based in Brooklyn, songwriter and pianist Laura Loriga has spent the last ten years honing her craft between Italy and the US, a geographic diversity which mimics the layered and shifting style of her work. Recording as both Mimes of Wine and now under her own name, Loriga has slowly veered away from an abstract classical sound toward something more immediate and intuitive, a move facilitated by a switch from acoustic piano to organ. Latest album <em>Vever</em>, out via ears&amp;eyes Records, utilises this along with a variety of acoustic and electric elements, with single &#8216;Passes the Flame&#8217; highlighting the shadowy, nuanced sound.</p>

<p>Back in 2018, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/max-garcia-conover/">Max García Conover</a> released <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2018/11/30/haley-heynderickx-max-garcia-conover-among-horses-iii/"><em>Among Horses III</em></a>, a superb collaboration with <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/haley-heynderickx/">Haley Heynderickx</a> on Barcelona label <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/son-canciones/">Son Canciones</a>. Following on from a series of singles, this spring sees return Conover return with <em>Deer</em>, a brand new album on the same label which again leans into collaborative work. Take lead single &#8216;Mud&#8217;, written and recorded with Massachusetts folk trio The Ballroom Thieves. A song every bit as sincere and searching as anything in Conover catalogue, looking for substance in a strange world. &#8220;I don&#8217;t need to find the centre, I just need another song,&#8221; he sings. &#8220;So what if I write it wrong?&#8221;</p>

<p>&#8220;This record is a concept album that’s meant to read like a book,&#8221; explains Proper. vocalist Erik Garlington of new record <em>The Great American Novel</em>. &#8220;Every song is a chapter following the protagonist through their 20s. Imagine a queer, Black Holden Caufield-type coming up in the 2010s.&#8221; Produced by <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/bartees-strange">Bartees Strange</a> and released via <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/fatherdaughter-records/">Father/Daughter</a> (US) and <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/big-scary-monsters/">Big Scary Monsters</a> (UK), the record is a searing critique of a society dedicated to and built upon denying Black genius. One which refuses to extend a hand to those who uphold this system of violence, deciding that for once it must be them who do the work to meet the album on its own terms.</p>

<p>Back in 2021 <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/saskatoon/">Saskatoon</a>&#8216;s <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/slow-down-molasses/">Slow Down Molasses</a> released their latest record, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2021/10/27/slow-down-molasses-minor-deaths/"><em>Minor Deaths</em></a>. What we called &#8221; a committed decision to embrace the energies of the contemporary moment in all of their frustrations, aggressions, vulnerabilities and dread.&#8221; Ahead of a UK tour this May, the band have unveiled a live version of single &#8216;<a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2021/04/14/slow-down-molasses-street-haunting/">Street Haunting</a>&#8216; recorded with Vator Sessions. A take which encapsulates the bristling intensity of a SDM live show.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Uma Bloo &#8211; Strange Actress</h3>
<p>The recording project of Molly Madden, Uma Bloo came into being when Madden left behind a strict conservative background and headed to Chicago. Among other artforms, songwriting soon became a way to express the dimensions of her personality that had otherwise been repressed. &#8220;Once I accepted the fact that I wanted to create my own music, these songs started pouring out of me in an effort to unpack the life I had and what I thought I wanted to build,&#8221; Madden explains. &#8220;In a lot of ways this album has been in process since I was eight years old without me fully knowing it.&#8221; Latest single &#8216;Strange Actress&#8217; carries all the ferocity and feeling you might expect from such a process, holding desire, desperation and defiance in its hands and refusing to apologise for any contradiction.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>We haven&#8217;t done the whole Year End List thing for a while, but last year decided to do a <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2021/01/11/music-we-missed-in-2020/">list of our favourite songs from 2020</a> that we failed to cover. It seemed like a good way to share some of the things we loved but for whatever reason didn&#8217;t write about, and was hopefully something more constructive than the arbitrary rankings of most Year End lists.</p>
<p>We&#8217;ve decided to expand things slightly this year, giving ourselves a chance to write a little something about the albums we wanted to cover but never got the opportunity. Albums which meant something to us at various points through 2021. Some cemented themselves early as our favourites of the year, others were relatively late additions that held our attention as the calendars changed, and a few break the rules in being albums released in previous years but earn their inclusion here having proved constant companions through last twelve months.</p>
<p>So here are some records we really enjoyed in 2021. We hope you enjoy them too.</p>

Their third release, </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">Garden Bed</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> is as sweet and soft as the peachy pink cover art, taking the gloomy fog of slowcore and holding a light beneath it, the cloud suddenly enveloping and bright. Paired with the earnest tenderness of Kennedy’s vocals, the songs come to feel like old companions. Fond and quietly contemplative, strangely familiar and hopeful in a manner not quite explicable. Songs easy to be around and easier to return to, comforting in the very fact they exist.</span></p>

Inspired by the conspicuous absence of karaoke during recent times, the release takes tracks from acts both old and new and reimagines them in the image of Ashworth’s distinctively hushed and empathetic style. With a mixture of classics (Lucinda Williams, Iris DeMent, St. John Prine) and contemporaries/<a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/orindal-records/">Orindal Records</a> label mates (<a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/dan-wriggins/">Dan Wriggins</a>, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/gia-margaret/">Gia Margaret</a>, Wednesday). The collection will resonate differently depending on who’s listening, but chances are there&#8217;ll be at least one occasion where the introduction is more like a reintroduction. An old friend smiling through the years, suddenly before you once again. </span></p>

The record is inspired by the work of Indian sculptor Mrinalini Mukherjee, an artist who explored the line between allegory and abstraction with an intuitive fluidity, and Jenkins follows this lead to spin her surroundings into representations of her own. Be that the characters and objects encountered in the travel diary of ‘Hard Drive’, the accumulated wisdom of ‘New Bikini’, or the startlingly pretty instrumentation that builds across the record thanks to a whole host of musicians. Songs shaped by Jenkins’s careful but fleeting hand, like sculptures allowed to dissipate as soon as they have formed. Moments captured, meaning what they will.</span></p>

The sense of some circular pattern, the past returning as the future, post-humanity imagined as prehistoric verdancy. The sensation is both delicate and strangely visceral. Keyed into the botanical surface and the supporting undergrowth, where fine mycelium threads facilitate pungent decomposition, enriching the soil so that the songs might bloom with their damp, bodily life.     </span></p>

Or is that foreign in the way dreams are foreign? <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/damien-jurado">Damien Jurado</a> presents each track as a space between the known and unknown, their characters hanging on in the hope such positions are transitory, and in doing so blurs the line between the characters and the songwriter himself. Take Majestic centrepiece &#8216;Johnny Caravella&#8217;, which calls to mind &#8216;Percy Faith&#8217; from </span><a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2018/12/06/damien-jurado-the-horizon-just-laughed/"><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">The Horizon Just Laughed</span></i></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> but this time takes inspiration from fictional DJ Dr. Johnny Fever from </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">WKRP in Cincinnati</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">. But &#8216;taking inspiration&#8217; doesn’t quite capture the song&#8217;s true extent, as Jurado channels the fictional doctor, his delivery neither quite Fever or himself but a blend of the two. &#8220;Who&#8217;ll wear the crown when the change is approaching / Of some other season renown?&#8221; this hybrid figure asks as the track winds tighter with every line. This latent intensity is brought to the surface in the finale, an urgent beseeching that we hang on a little longer. &#8220;As I exited north the radio spoke / &#8216;All is not lost even if you&#8217;re without a direction&#8217;,&#8221; goes the final verse. &#8220;Go west, go west, 1972 / The sun hasn&#8217;t set, the stars very few / Just stick around &#8217;til the light pushes into the darkness.&#8221;</span></p>

The participants are older, their communities atomised, their world having been sliced up and commodified by tech-savvy barons both ruthless and polite. In this way, the band’s eighth album feels a closer descendant of Craig Finn’s solo records than more recent Hold Steady records. A considered, cohesive </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">album </span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">of</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> narrative-driven songs which offer glimpses into the lives of imperfect figures dissatisfied or downtrodden and merely surviving. Finn &amp; Co. mean many different things to many different people, but too often their work is (mis)understood as a mere good time. As though the joy of The Hold Steady is solely the joy of the party. But like so many of their records before it, </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">Open Door Policy</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> is proof of something deeper and more profound. The quiet, ugly dignity of humans persevering, and the irreplaceable value of a community to see them through.</span></p>

It was a fear intensely human yet inorganic, recasting life as a path with danger around every bend. <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/chicago/">Chicago</a>&#8216;s KUZU throw us into such a heightened state, their improvisational jazz guarding its hand, leaving the listener no choice but to strap in and follow the slow-burning yet ever shifting lines. But from within the anxiety of this undetermined ride, an overarching conviction emerges. The sense everything is barrelling toward some spectacular finale. The dreadful shattering event. The screw turns and turns, the sound needling with increasingly deranged energy, leaving the listener like Gene Hackman’s Harry Caul at the end of </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">The Conversation</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">, tearing their surroundings rather than break apart themselves.</span></p>

The explicit goodbye of closing track &#8216;Worm in Heaven&#8217; might play as a cathartic acknowledgement of this fear, but Casey chooses to undercut himself, mocking his own attempts to conquer dread through music. Her work contains a hundred shades and small details pointing toward this history, but its lasting influence is less tangible. A sense of intuition threads through the songs. A phenomenon which lends them a certain timelessness, the sense they haven’t been so much written as teased out of some half-remembered space. The intricate arrangements are rendered simple in their instinctive rhythm, Reed&#8217;s poetic lyrics given the weight of the land. &#8220;We&#8217;d stand in the dark and cry,&#8221; she sings near the end of the record, &#8220;Oh, if only we could / For our bones, they belong to the country.&#8221; These songs feel like they belong to the country too, Reed more a guardian than a creator. For now they are travelling with her, and a worthy custodian she makes. </span></p>

A tessellated blend of samples, field recordings and vocal cameos which emerge haphazardly from dark layers of instrumentation. The result is an expressionistic picture of a society, one dazed and delirious, left to wander this long night with all their love and fear and loss in the hope some dawn might lend this intangible reality some weight.  </span></p>

Love stirs from within the tracks and with it a poppier, full-bodied sound. The sense the quiet melancholy is coalescing into something more tangible and immediate, gathering weight and sinking toward some intensity on the ground. Perhaps we got it backward, we’re looking at the artwork upside down.</span></p>

But the truth lies in the volatile swirl of instrumentation, a jazzy swell of cymbals and piano and drums, sax licking staccato like the devil’s tongue or the threatening word of God. &#8216;Robber&#8217; is a confession, a plea, a waking fever dream. The colonial past and capitalist present manifest in all its unease. A violence which seeps out, haunting even the record’s most tender moments. Lindeman repeatedly turns to the natural world as an escape, from the birds of ‘Parking Lot’ to the &#8220;cold metallic scent of snow&#8221; in &#8216;Subdivisions&#8217;, the sky, the green, the soft of &#8216;Heart&#8217;. But as it says in &#8216;Loss&#8217;, &#8220;At some point you’d have to live as if the truth was true.&#8221; Nature might still persist, but it is the robber who built the world around us. His hand is still in our pockets. Even the sunset on &#8216;Atlantic&#8217; is blood red.</span></p>

Birds in the air, flies in the bug light, brawls at the baseball and crossbows in old family photographs. Sometimes these memories are traumatic, sometimes they are sad, sometimes they mean nothing beyond their own shape and texture but then again, that’s just how life unfolds.        </span></p>

What emerges is not a clear narrative, at least not in the linear sense, but rather a patchwork of vignettes which combine into a picture far larger and more extensive. The dead are plural in this book, and each has their own story to tell.</span></p>

To write a record which might catalogue the atrocities of this moment. As he sings on &#8216;When I&#8217;ve Been Born (I’ll Love You)&#8217;: &#8220;The present is prosaic / The future, a disgrace / We can&#8217;t just look away now / It stares us in the face.&#8221; Capturing the tone of the record, the song charts the profound sickness of our times, and can’t help but slip back toward self-examination in the face of such horror. A search which emerges with no solution beyond a determination to face the worst undaunted. “When I get my prize, I&#8217;ll love you,” goes the chorus. &#8220;As the oceans rise, I&#8217;ll love you / When the air gеts thin, I&#8217;ll love you / If the fascists win, I&#8217;ll love you.&#8221;</span></p>

The record promises to be a personal one, written during treatment for addiction and amid an ongoing effort to realise their non-binary trans identity, something which clearly influences the tone of the songs. “A lot of the album was written when I was literally in the process of improving my mental health,&#8221; Chithambo explains. &#8220;So there’s a lot of hopefulness and wonder at the fact that I was able to survive. Not only survive but restart my life and work towards becoming the person I was meant to be.&#8221;</p>
<p>What emerges from this process is a collection of songs that delve deep. As with any true self-examination, sadness and doubt emerge. Grief for times and people lost, and the countless small betrayals from both outside and in. But rather than be consumed by the uncertainty and pain, Anjimile finds motivation in the feelings, surfacing with a newfound confidence and determination. There is joy in being able to recognise yourself after so much trauma.</p>
<p>Lead single &#8216;Maker&#8217; serves as the perfect introduction to this style. A song of both celebration and mourning, the track blends the minimal and the maximal, starting with modest folk rhythms and slowing growing into something altogether richer. Fired by the subtle power of Chithambo&#8217;s vocals, the morose questioning of the opening half sees brightness shine through, borrowing retro pop and African influences to eventually become jubilant and empowered.</p>

<p>Joined by Ben Austin (cello), Grant Engstrom (lead guitar), Pat Lyons (pedal steel),<br />
Tina Scarpello (vocals) and Jack Schemenauer (percussion)—AKA Everyone Else—<a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/spencer-radcliffe/">Spencer Radcliffe</a> has made a new record to be released this month on <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/run-for-cover-records/">Run For Cover Records</a>. Adopting something of a country vibe, the release of <em>Hot Spring </em>is timed perfectly, the record concerned with transitions and seasonal change. The title track finds snow once more, winter clinging on or returning unannounced, while second single &#8216;Bloodletting&#8217; finds something of a reprieve. &#8220;Spring is done, the battle’s been won,&#8221; Radcliffe sings. &#8220;Everyone survived the unloading of guns.&#8221; The order of the tracks is flipped on the album itself, lending a new weight to a line in the former: &#8221; You know it’s best not to believe in everything you’re told.&#8221;</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Christelle Bofale &#8211; U Ouchea</h3>
<p>Based in Austin, Texas, Christelle Bofale combines soul, dream pop and jazz to form a distinctive sound, drawing upon her Congolese roots to further add to the personal nature of her music. Thematically, the record is one of conflict, from the juxtaposition of gentleness and ferocity in the sound to the lyrical explorations of bravery, honesty and doubt—coalescing into an evocative meditation on the contemporary black experience. Single &#8216;U Ouchea&#8217; is a worthy introduction, its cyclical nature unfurling slowly across the seven-minute run time, yet underpinned by an oblique tension, some inner force running against the ethereal style.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Emma Frank &#8211; I Thought</h3>
<p>There&#8217;s no one genre tag that will adequately describe the music of Emma Frank. With the pursuit of a number of styles, often within the same song, the New York artist has created a uniquely shifting sound that is never satisfied with remaining in any one place. Be it folk, pop, jazz or R&amp;B, Frank dips into any number of stylistic influences, though the sound is tied together by the honeyed warmth of her vocals.</p>
<p>Having signed with Justin Time Records/Nettwerk, Frank has recently released a brand new single, &#8216;I Thought.&#8217; The track confronts the impulsive and drastic, the people who change their lives on the whim of tenuous crushes, burning bridges with all that came before in the blinkered blur of the moment. Frank considers herself a member of this group, but the track is a reminder of the value of a slower kind of living—the meaning of things cultivated over time, weathering fleeting fancies to achieve a more substantial weight.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Operators &#8211; Faithless</h3>
<p>Montreal-based project Operators sees Dan Boeckner (Wolf Parade, Handsome Furs), Devojka and Sam Brown (Divine Fits, New Bomb Turks) combine their talents to form an urgently electronic sound. The project feels like the sonic progression of Handsome Furs, synths and beats weaving a pressing sound somewhere between Cold War and sci-fi, Boeckner&#8217;s familiar vocal style only adding to the insistent motion.</p>
<p>Ahead of new record <em>Radiant Dawn</em>, Operators have released the single &#8216;Faithless&#8217;. With its rigid beat and cold synths, the song opens as a kind of brutalist pop song, though eventually takes on a variety of other elements so as to form an almost transcendental crescendo.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Bad Books &#8211; Lake House</h3>
<p>Bad Books is a collaborative project between Kevin Devine and <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/andy-hull/">Andy Hull</a> and Robert McDowell of <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/manchester-orchestra/">Manchester Orchestra</a>. Their first album in seven years, <em>III</em> will be released this summer on Loma Vista Records, and sees Devine and Hull alternate writing duties. The first single, &#8216;Lake House&#8217; is Hull&#8217;s creation, leaning closer to his <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/right-away-great-captain/">Right Away, Great Captain!</a> sound than Manchester Orchestra, his distinctive brand of morose hope feeling as striking as ever. “‘Lake House’ is quite a personal song to me, Hull explains. &#8220;We tried to place it in a sonic environment that felt three dimensional. Instead of just hearing the song left and right, we wanted to have the sounds feel forward, backwards, above and below.”</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Robert Stillman &#8211; Reality</h3>
<p>Hailing from the northeast United States but now based in the UK, Robert Stillman composes experimental music that incorporates features of classical, jazz, minimalism, electronic and folk, pairing the futuristic digital sounds with a more traditional American style. His latest record, <em>Reality</em>, intends to, as Stillman puts it, &#8220;draw attention to, and unconditionally praise, the directly experienced world,&#8221; something achieved through an intense attention to detail that conjures a sense of intricacy and wonder. With an intuitive, spontaneous style, the album possess an organic, living spirit, each track its own ecosystem within which the various elements interact and converse.</p>

<p>Marking a change from the lo-fi intimacy of debut EP, <em>Always A Good Reason</em>, the forthcoming Rose Hotel (AKA Jordan Reynolds) album embraces a full-band sound. But the record promises to retain the earnest tone that made the debut so special. As such, while <em>I Will Only Come When It’s A Yes </em>displays a variety of influences, from shoegaze to retro girl group, Reynold&#8217;s burning spirit acts as the through line. &#8216;Running Behind&#8217; attests, the track&#8217;s upbeat country rock distorted in a kind of Neutral Milk Hotel manner, Reynold&#8217;s vocals soaring and swooping within the clamour.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Yammerer &#8211; Poisonous Reptilian Colleague’s &amp; Co</h3>
<p>One of Liverpool&#8217;s best kept secrets, Yammerer eschew promotion and social media presence in favour of old fashioned hype, developing a psych-tinged brand of post-punk that&#8217;s only as odd as the world from which is emerged. Take new single &#8216;Poisonous Reptilian Colleague’s &amp; Co&#8217;, which combines the dark prophecies of Nick Cave with The Fall&#8217;s caustic charm and creates a sonic beast of many heads—each snarling and sneering and prone to howls of execration.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Anna Wiebe &#8211; Fortune</h3>
<p><em>New Behaviour</em>, the 2016 debut record of Guelph songwriter Anna Wiebe, might have utilised relatively simple folk arrangements, but rich harmonies and Wiebe&#8217;s offbeat style transformed them into nuanced and genre-challenging songs. Her follow-up record <em>All I Do Is Move</em>, said to be concerned with &#8220;cycles, and the mental growth and movement that comes with life’s lessons,&#8221; promises to see an embrace of more complex arrangements. Though it is Wiebe&#8217;s idiosyncratic eye that will again prove to be its biggest strength. Lead single &#8216;Fortune&#8217; gives us a glimpse at the evolution, the creeping, snaking vibe grown vivid by a full band, Wiebe&#8217;s vocals combining with the instrumentation to form a near-hypnotic rhythm.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Merin &#8211; Coral Island</h3>
<p>Describing themselves as a &#8220;melancholy power pop quartet,&#8221; Winnipeg-based band Merin combine the bummed-out vibes of slacker rock with a more hopeful spirit, leading to a sound that&#8217;s at once grounded and bright. The title track of their latest EP, <em>Coral Island</em>, is perhaps the perfect example. &#8220;As I get older and fatter,&#8221; sings lead Cole Neusteaeder in the opening line, &#8220;I try my best not to just get sadder,&#8221; imagining an escape to a tropical island as though warmer climes might stave off the concerns. Only this is the twenty-first century—the coral reefs are dying and the pacific islands are being reclaimed by the sea. At least at the end of the world, we no longer have to worry about growing old and fat.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Wild Yawp &#8211; Femme Girl</h3>
<p>New York&#8217;s Wild Yawp is perhaps best described by their own name—WILD (adj): uncontrolled or unrestrained, especially in pursuit of pleasure, YAWP (n): a raucous noise; a cry; a shout. With Emily Bielagus on vocals/guitar, reba hasko drumming and sid solomon providing bass/backup vocals, the band create a boisterous, in-your-face sound that is equal parts fun and aggressive. New single &#8216;Femme Girl&#8217; being a case in point, taking on the arrogance of Straight White Males with all the energy of a runaway train—combining the caustic wit of The Coathangers with the breakneck snarl of Priests to transform an uncomfortable situation into an affirming one.</p>

<p>Eamon McGrath&#8217;s prolific career has encompassed a wide range of styles and genres, though his music has always been united by a heartfelt spirit and DIY attitude. Latest single &#8216;GUTS&#8217; sees an introspective turn, tackling addiction and its accompanying emotions of guilt and sadness with an affirming openness and vulnerability. The tone therefore veers between self-deprecation and a strange kindness, working to acknowledge the frustration of dependence and the poison that brings, while trying to carve out an opening to relieve the pressure in order to start the slow healing process.</p>

<p>Blood Cultures is a cryptic &#8220;individual (or group of individuals)&#8221; from New Jersey that make a compelling brand of psych-pop while masking their identities with balaclavas. The inspiration came from a mass hijacking of local television broadcasts in 1990s NJ, the usual programming replaced by mysterious sounds and images by an anonymous infiltrator. Blood Cultures position themselves as the second coming of this unexplained phenomenon, a faceless, nameless entity looking to worm its way into your homes and minds, perhaps hoping to leave an impression on a new generation so that esoteric message might live on.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">The Painters &#8211; Pieces of Life</h3>
<p>Montreal indie pop band The Painters, led by Alex Bourque, have a new album on the way on <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/egg-paper-factory/">Egg Paper Factory</a>. This is good news in itself, but what&#8217;s even better is that the band have released an outtake from the record to raise anticipation a little. &#8216;Pieces of Life’ sees the band, led by Alex Bourque, continue with their bright and nostalgic indie pop aesthetic that we last heard on 2016’s <em>Specks of Dust</em>. There are shades of Velvet Underground and Nap Eyes in the laid-back vibes and pseudo-philosophical musings, but with more of a lo-fi folk angle, right down to the withering birdsong at the end.</p>

This is displayed in latest single &#8216;Something To Hope For&#8217;, the light, almost celebratory tone balanced against Finn&#8217;s distinctive sing-speak delivery.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Pieket &#8211; Eternal Recurrence</h3>
<p>Pieket are a band from Dhaka in Bangladesh. Sinjan Saadat, Syed Wadud, Hasib Mahmud and Rushnaf Wadud combine to create lo-fi indie pop in the fashion of Mac DeMarco. Their latest EP, <em>Powerpoint Depresentation</em>, is out now, and opening track &#8216;Eternal Recurrence&#8217; acts as a good introduction. The song begins with a ruminative intro, eventually giving way to languid percussion and slacker-inspired vocals, bright guitar lifting everything out of bummed-out bedroom pop territory.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Emily Fairlight &#8211; Body Below</h3>
<p>Emily Fairlight is a folk singer who lives in Dunedin, New Zealand. Fairlight makes self-described &#8220;doom folk,&#8221; which has earned comparisons with PJ Harvey (for the vocals), Will Oldham (for the writing) and Calexico (for the conjured atmosphere). Her new album, <em>Mother of Gloom</em>, was recorded in Austin, Texas, adding a Southern Gothic edge to the collection of rich and emotive folk songs. The album&#8217;s first track, &#8216;Body Below&#8217; delves straight into weighty emotion, the label describing Fairlight&#8217;s voice as &#8220;stark and haunting [&#8230;] teak-hard yet soft as crushed velvet&#8221; in some indication of the juxtaposition of power and vulnerability on display. If this is anything to go by, Emily Fairlight is about to follow the likes of <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2015/10/14/quiet-constant-friends-nadia-reid-runway/">Nadia Reid</a> and Aldous Harding as the next breakout New Zealand folk artist.</p>

<p>Brooklyn&#8217;s Barrie might revolve around the work of lead Barrie Lindsay, though it&#8217;s anything but a solo project. Drawing on the talents of Dominic Apa, Spurge Carter, Sabine Holler and Noah Prebish, Barrie has recorded <em>Happy To Be Here</em>, an album that celebrates collaboration and inclusivity to become something larger than the sum of its parts. New single &#8216;Saturated&#8217; is as good a place as any to dive into the band&#8217;s silky pop sound, with the track standing out as pure even to the band themselves. “It came out fully formed, sounding mostly like how it sounds now,&#8221; explained Lindsay. &#8220;It’s minimal and exposed, kind of vulnerable but in a confident way. I want people to relate to that state of pure, open saturation. I want this song to feel like a crush.”</p>

<p><a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/shane-leonard/">Shane Leonard</a> is a name that pops up periodically here at Various Small Flames, with his work as Kalispell and appearances on records from the likes of <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/field-report/">Field Report</a> and <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/jeremy-squires/">Jeremy Squires</a>, (not to mention helping to record and produce music with <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/simon-balto/">Simon Balto</a> and <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/anna-tivel/">Anna Tivel</a>). However, Leonard also records solo under his own name, and 2019 will see the release of a brand new album, <em>Strange Forms</em>.</p>
<p>Giving a taste of what&#8217;s to come, lead single &#8216;Empire Builder&#8217; is a bright amalgamation of folk and rock, the calm energy of the song complementing Leonard&#8217;s quiet philosophising. The lyrics are balanced between confusion and peace, the unanswered and unanswerable questions of life framed not as sources of crippling doubt but mysteries to acknowledge and appreciate from outside.</p>

<p>Meeting in Asheville in 2017, Joe Chang (aka Gold Light) and Beau Campolong (Snakemusk) found they shared an appreciation of the tragic heartbreak of classic country records and started making music together. Full-length album <em>Shadows In The Shallows </em>is the result of the collaboration, channelling the big players in folk and country to create a traditional Americana fit for the twenty-first century. Lead single &#8216;The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter&#8217; is the perfect example, a narrative-driven, lovelorn track with an almost otherworldly edge, 70s folk coloured by the strangeness of Carson McCullers&#8217; South Gothic style.</p>

<p>JW Ridley has been steadily building a collection of songs demonstrating his incisive, emotionally-resonant sound, and latest single &#8216;Homesick (Out The Blue)&#8217; is no exception. Blending the woozy melancholy of Radiohead with an insistent energy more akin to post-punk, the song is something of a juxtaposition, the momentum of the sound masking something altogether more drifting in the sentiment of lyrics. Indeed, such a contrast could be said to be a key theme of the track. &#8220;It’s about the things we hold on to,&#8221; Ridley explains, &#8220;or the things that never really leave us.&#8221;</p>

<p>Ruthie is the new recording project of Naomi Baguley, who you might know as the former front of cult punk outfit, Bruising. Taking a new direction, Ruthie now peddles an altogether more luscious sound, taking equals parts folk and indie rock and crafting a 70s-inspired middle ground. Inspired by David Szalay’s novel <em>All That Man Is</em>, new single &#8216;Spirit Moves Now&#8217; not only highlights Ruthie honeyed style but also the considered approached to songwriting that underpins it, Baguley creating an admirable thematic and emotional depth.</p>

Lynch, along with Jonathan Campolo (drums, piano, vocals), Nicholas Campolo (guitar) and Andrew Chugg (bass, synth), New York&#8217;s Blush makes an intimate brand of bedroom pop that hinges about Lynch&#8217;s restrained vocal style and the warm instrumental arrangements. Following on from 2017&#8217;s self-titled debut album, Blush is back with a brand new single, &#8216;Forever is a Long Time&#8217;, taking the soft earnestness of Free Cake For Every Creature and adding something a little more pressing so as to exist halfway between bedroom pop and garage rock.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Shutups &#8211; Yellowjacket</h3>
<p>Oakland-based duo Shutups is a band based on a connection deeper than most. After being college friends, life and geography separated Mia and Hadley, but after an accident left Hadley housebound, the bond persevered and grew. Shutups became the mechanism with which to realign life, a reason to continue despite difficulty. “It didn’t feel like a happy ending movie plot,” Hadley says of his eventual re-emergence into the world. “I came out depressed and not wanting to do anything. The band saved me.”</p>
<p>Four EPs later, the band have honed their angular pop punk style for a debut full-length, <em>Every Day I&#8217;m Less Zen</em>. Lead single &#8216;Yellowjacket&#8217; serves as an introduction, it&#8217;s urgent and off-kilter style creating a frantic abandon that lifts the act above its peers, the pair&#8217;s obvious connection allowing a tight-knit yet idiosyncratic sound.
