Any new album from Advance Base is going to rank near the very top of our most anticipated of a given year, but the description of newly announced full-length Horrible Occurrences couldn’t be any more exciting. A record “all centered around a fictional town called Richmond and featuring an interlinked cast of characters,” as the press release explains. “You will hear stories of death and disappearance, climactic confrontations and unsolved mysteries.” Fans of the project will recognise songs like ‘Little Sable Point Lighthouse’ and ‘How You Got Your Picture on the Wall’, but new single ‘The Year I Lived in Richmond’ is what serves as an introduction to Owen Ashworth’s most conceptual release to date. A song which does more in three verses than the majority of published stories, and one which effortlessly displays Ashworth’s unrivalled ability to mine ostensibly ordinary lives for their brilliant slivers of heartbreak and strangeness.

Anlaki – Escape ’til Dead

Based in Iruña-Pamplona, Spain, Anlaki is the bedroom music project of Julen Izkue which uses a classic DIY spirit to explore both the difficulties of adulthood and discomfort of modern life. Latest album Wind Call shows just how fun and inventive this lo-fi style can be, lovingly wrapping up a mix of slacker rock and power pop sensibilities in a warm blanket of fuzz. Single ‘Escape ’til Dead’ is the perfect example. The hazy tones are by no means a barrier to a sense of forward motion that propels things, the track embracing its title as a kind of motto to push itself onward with carefree brightness in spite of everything.

Constant Follower – All Is Well

Last month we introduced The Smile You Send Out Returns To You, the forthcoming album by Constant Follower via Last Night From Glasgow, with single ‘Whole Be’. A song about the contradiction inherent in the way we long for wholeness while acknowledging imperfection, the track not only introduced a newly ethereal sound for the outfit, but also furthered the visual element of their work through both cover art and video. Latest single ‘All Is Well’ is no different. Stephen McAll and co. mine the title for all of its complications, delving into the ways in which the contemporary reliance on comfort and convenience masks an ever-present dread below the surface of our society. It is notable that the band dedicate the song to Jake ‘Taurus Mortimer’, a young person killed in the care of NHS Forth Valley Psychiatric services back in 2023. The Convenience – Routiner

Duncan Troast and Nick Corson started The Convenience after meeting at Loyola University in New Orleans, using the project as a space in which to experiment within the wide genre of pop. Released in 2021 via Winspear, album Accelerator felt like the culmination of this practice, evolving the sound of their earlier releases towards its most vivid, far-reaching state. However, not satisfied to rest on their laurels, The Convenience are now pushing their boundaries again. New double single Routiner / Postcard sees the duo strike out towards a guitar-led art-rock which sits closer to the likes of Cate Le Bon and Parquet Courts. Take the first track, which is strung across a taut bassline but spins in various directions with a volatile twitching energy, capturing the push and pull of life, from deadening repetition to sharp alarm.

Doctor Delia – What a Drag!!

“We literally had gendered uniforms,” explains Doctor Delia of growing up in suburban Tampa schools. “We were stuck in them like little toy soldiers. The whole time, or much of the whole time, I wanted to dress like a woman, or more feminine. Deep down I knew it felt good, and right for some reason, but there was so much shame around it.” New single ‘What a Drag!!’ serves as both a refutation of the strictures experienced during this time and a celebration of living as the person you truly are. “What a drag not to be yourself,” as the song goes, progressing with the kind of calm, assured rhythm that only comes with lessons learnt the hard way.

Holding Hour – Can I Leave Me Too?

‘Can I Leave Me Too?’, the latest track from Des Moines duo Holding Hour, is a lesson in juxtaposition. For while the song is set within the ostensibly celebratory, communal scene of a birthday party, the overriding mood is one of alienation and doubt. The sound itself follows a similarly contrasting style, its brooding undertones threatening to engulf the vocals as the percussion presses forward as though towards some imminent break or change. What results is a track full of conflict, between calmness and motion, darkness and light, not to mention that internal disquiet of a person coming to understand how they might be responsible for the less than perfect conditions of a relationship.

Leoblu x World Wild Web – Utopia

Emerging from the heart of Berlin‘s underground music scene, ‘Utopia’ is a single which sees Leoblu and World Wild Web pair their styles into something at once ethereal and charged with vivid energy. We’ve written about the ambiguous and atmospheric sound of Julia Carlsson’s Leoblu several times in recent years, most recently with Blu Lucid Nightmare, and the addition of World Wide Web’s rhythms and beats pushes it into new territory—one still shadowed yet shot through with a kind of transcendent possibility. “’Utopia’ came from a deep place of questioning,” Carlsson explains, “both within myself and the world around us. It’s an emotional journey through grief, but also a declaration of hope, defiance and change.”

Melanie MacLaren – Laika

“The product of a period marked by experiences of grief, loss and illness, the new songs look to confront life in its truest state. To push beyond the myths we tell ourselves and look at mortality with a clear gaze.” So we wrote last month of the forthcoming release from  Nashville singer-songwriter Melanie MacLaren. New single ‘Laika’ is no less direct in its focus, using the tragic story of the titular Soviet space dog as a way into humanity’s propensity to exploit the vulnerable more generally, and how the powerful continue to disregard the rights and dignity of everyone else. The result is a lesson in restraint, though beneath the slow, soft folk style is a vast chasm of anger at everything we have done and continue to do.

This Frontier Needs Heroes – Truck Driver

Writing back in July, we described Brad Lauretti of This Frontier Needs Heroes as “a folk artist in the traditional sense, wandering and entertaining audiences with equal parts playfulness, protest and heartbreak while always pining for places left in the rear view mirror.” Inspired by a period driving an RV across America for another artist’s tour, latest single ‘Truck Driver’ leans into this spirit more fully, injecting a sense of constant momentum to the folk rock style to equate the life of a touring musician with that of a long-haul driver. “I got to live the life of a truck driver for a few weeks,” as Lauretti says, “driving all night, sleeping in the cab, eating in gas stations, with all the crazy things that happened along the way.”

Back in August we wrote about ‘Sarehole Mill‘, the debut single from EP Wandering Worlds by Birmingham-based artist, composer, producer and singer-songwriter AGAAMA. It was a song, we described, “rooted in physical place but also the psyche of the individuals and collectives with pass through it, carrying with it all those people’s energies and anxieties.” Now out via The state51 Conspiracy, the EP continues this examination of spaces, gradually moving from a place of uncertainty to one of love. With its patient intimacy, closer ‘In This Life’ completes this journey, drawing a line between healing and empowerment, championing the healing of wounds as the path to more fully becoming oneself.

Alexia Avina – Let This Die

Fresh off the back of recent album A Little Older on Lost Map Records, Alexia Avina returns this month with a brand new EP, Crush. Focused on vulnerability and smallness, the previous record probed at tender spots we might usually ignore or protect, choosing to sit and contemplate pain instead. But Crush emerges from the aftermath of this period. A fresh start where new feelings germinate and sprout through the ground. Composed entirely of synths, the result is something freer, more fun, ready to give itself over to joy and desire, even while understanding such emotions might only stay for a fleeting moment. Check out the video for lead single ‘Let This Die’ below, shot, directed and edited by Sara Laufer.

Alicia Clara – I Let My Plant Die

Following last year’s EP Outsider/Unusual, Montreal-based dream pop artist Alicia Clara returns this month with a new four song release. Titled Velveteen, the EP is something of a message to her teenage self, and finds Clara at her most assured, combing confident musicianship with impressionistic and introspective lyrics that display an admirable vulnerability. Latest single ‘I Let My Plant Die’ was written on the pandemic’s one year anniversary and is full of both yearning for “normal” life and gentle self-admonishment for living passively and taking small things for granted. “The inspiration behind the title came from three baby plants I inadvertently let die when I left my apartment to go stay with family outside of Montreal in March 2020, thinking I’d be back in the city come April,” Clara explains. “I recognized a parallel between this and a tendency I have to put off tackling tasks or situations that scare me, thinking time will do the work on its own.” Check out the video directed and shot on the Swiss-French border by Alix Bortoli below:

Brody Price – It Was You

Later this month, Dallas artist Brody Price will release his latest album Win a Trip to Palm Springs! On Niles City Records. Price refers to his style (only semi sarcastically) as “doom country,” a tag which goes some way to capturing the record’s blend of folk, country, noise and sludge. The album’s second single, ‘It Was You’ exists on the gentler end of the spectrum but still captures the wider tension and stormy atmosphere which mirrors the lyrics’ exploration of the turbulence of life. Price is joined by Robert Ellis (piano) and Andy Baxter (vocal harmonies), who together create a folk song that, despite its twang and gentle melodies, actual explores the difficulties we all face and sometimes try to hide. “This song is about being aware of my own internal turmoil and realizing that everyone has the same thing in some form or fashion,” Price explains. “Even if someone may appear to have it all together, you still can’t tell what’s racing through their mind when they lay awake at night.”

Doctor Delia – Whoa

Based in Portland, Oregon, Doctor Delia is a self-described “entity specializing in tinctures, alchemical transubstantiation, and old-time new-time music.” We first featured their work last summer, when we reviewed Parlor Songs, a collaborative album with Mother Juniper that we described as possessing “an intangible sense of homespun communal spirit.” Their latest release is Sunroom Vloop // Whoa, a double single which again takes a traditional instrument (here the violin) and creates something that feels both fresh and somehow timeless. ‘Sunroom Vloop’ is a bright and playful expression of the titular sunroom, all clear warm air and vivid reflections, while ‘Whoa’ is a violin loop altogether more mystical. “If you listen closely you can hear a great Spirit moving through the bones of the violin,” Doctor Delia describes. “It is my spirit; it is more than what I can put into words. So I play.”

ghost orchard – rest

This November sees the release of rainbow music, the new album from ghost orchard on Winspear. The project of Grand Rapids, Michigan’s Sam Hall, ghost orchard has made its name with a distinctively sincere blend of folk and electronic styles, and their latest record develops this aesthetic further. A picture of calm and patience amid loss, where the quiet stillness holds the latent warmth of things now gone. New single ‘rest’ is the perfect introduction, its palpable, physical details holding something less tangible too. As though the world itself mourns that which is lost, and the correct arrangement of objects might summon it back once more. Watch the video by Nik Arthur below:

Greta O’Leary – Body, Now

Written during an autumnal drive through the mountains of the South Island, ‘Body, Now’ is the latest single from Aotearoa folk artist Greta O’Leary. It’s a delicate, careful track which places the body into this context of the environment, charting its subtle changes in the face of grief in the manner one might watch the seasons pass across a landscape. But for all its isolation and heartbreak, the song emerges as a balm against outside forces. A return to the self as not only a mode of protection, but a way in which to reconnect with the most fundamental of things.

Hang Linton x LeBron Aggressive – SALE

The work of Leeds-based interdisciplinary artist Hang Linton has been described as “a rebellion against clean aesthetics,” his work across music, performance, video and installation inspired by time spent amid countercultural collectives in Berlin. Debut single ‘SALE’ sees Linton enlist the talents of LeBron Aggressive for a synth-based meditation on consumerist culture, the catchy and playful sound simmering underneath sardonic lyrics. Essentially repurposing the strategy of advertisements to send the attack in the opposite direction. A crystal clear message dressed up with shiny adornments. “Discounts on discounts but don’t discount the fact,” as Linton sings. “We bought it all for cheap, with the sweat off someone else’s back.”

Kierst – Phone Call

South Carolina raised, Brooklyn-based songwriter Kierst has a new EP, Thud, coming next month on Sad Club Records, and latest single ‘Phone Call’ sets the tone for the release. A reflection on longing and self-worth which owes as much to Grouper and Mazzy Star as it does contemporary bedroom pop, the intimate vocals and pressing rhythm lifted by an ethereal soundscape, resulting in a mood which transcends the immediate pain for heartbreak. “I think it’s important to know how to sit with yourself, and not depend so much on romantic fulfilment, Kierst explains of the track. “You can only be as good to someone else as you can be to yourself, and the song’s about knowing when to respect that.”

Platonic Sex – Exhausted Competing For You

Meanjin/Brisbane outfit Platonic Sex are gearing up to release a brand new EP this November, and latest single ‘Exhausted Competing For You’ gives further indication of what to expect from the four-piece. The single is a track based around the tensions of a mismatched relationship, where the initial rush of excitement has dissipated and issues of compatibility are brought into relief. The temptation to persevere in the face of such doubts is clear, but struggling to make things work comes at a cost. “It’s exhausting to keep something alive for the sake of fighting for it,” says lead Bridget Brandolini, a realisation which becomes apparent across the song, its energy picking up into an affirming catharsis. Puck – Best Friend

Having cut her teeth touring in the bands of SZA, dhruv and Maggie Rogers, Puck might have already announced themselves as keyboardist, but upcoming debut album Best Friend feels like a proper introduction. The record draws upon a childhood immersed in Seattle’s grunge and alt-rock scene but reaches out toward folk and jazz too. A highly personal blend used to conjure the experience of love but also violence, ultimately directing its energies into processing trauma and grief within a society seemingly arranged to reinforce such phenomena. “I wanted it to be catchy enough for the words to sneak under people’s skin,” Puck explains of the title track. “I didn’t really have much music to heal by, so I made some.”

For their latest release, Parlor Songs, Mother Juniper teamed up with Doctor Delia, an artist based in Portland, Oregon who describes themselves as “an entity specializing in tinctures, alchemical transubstantiation, and old-time new-time music.” From that description alone it is plain to see Mother Juniper and Doctor Delia make the perfect creative partners. Together they crafted something subtly beautiful, a collection of lovingly home-recorded and truly collaborative songs which feel not quite of our time.

Indeed, as the title suggests, Parlor Songs is a throwback to another era, one before the wide availability of recorded music, where people had to sing and play to entertain each other. Recorded in a single day in “an old room with a red piano […] with one microphone in a boot, and one bottle,” the album possesses an intangible sense of homespun communal spirit. Its songs build from uncertain intros, often accentuated with whispered questions or comments between artists, into rhythms and flows which feel like something passing through the room.

Clocking in at just over 90 seconds, opener ‘Orange Tree’ is a wonderfully simple and sincere folk song. “Down by the orange tree” it begins “where the juice drips drips drips drips / I found a swarm of bees.” But it also displays the record’s stranger side too, a surreal sleep logic that melds reality and fantasy, imagined scenes becoming indistinguishable from the physical. The bees go on to live in the narrator’s head, take a trip to the south without ever stepping from beneath the orange tree.

drove down to New Orleans
and it seems we’ve been inside a dream
where the scenes skip skip skip skip skip

The rest of the album continues along a similar path, bringing together songs pre-written and songs made up on the day, simply crafted but enveloped in a veil of mystery. Some tracks, like ‘Bathtub Song’ are wordless and feel improvised, plucked from the ether in that quiet room, while others contain more distinctive storytelling. “There are things you’ll never know” goes ‘Steam Risin’ as it shuffles and shambles in tuneful disorder, feeling like something of a mission statement for the project, while ‘Old Morass’ slows things down with ponderous and poignant piano.

Ultimately, Parlor Songs is an aural document of one place on one afternoon, a moment suspended in time forever. It captures the sound of the rain, of people beyond the old wooden windows, and the small magic conjured by Mother Juniper and Doctor Delia within. As the album’s blurb puts it:

Neither of them knows what will happen, but they begin on one Spring afternoon…It was a day on the precipice of the plague’s pause, which made the radio earthquake and the city swell. Right in that great edge of possibility we sometimes refer to as the unknown, they started singing.
