Today marks the fifth anniversary of Fox Food Records, and to celebrate James Smith has gathered a large number of the label’s artists for a special compilation, Something’s There But You’re Not Sure What. Essentially a who’s who of the Fox Food roster, the release represents a celebration of what truly independent labels can offer—a diverse group of people from all over the world linked not by a specific sound and style but rather the spirit within.

Opening with an acoustic version of Oh Rose‘s ‘Prom’, Something’s There But You’re Not Sure What features a whole host of our favourites. Nice Legs stop by with another slice of delightfully warm fuzz pop, Spartan Jet-Plex provides an alternate take on single ‘Meant’ and Monarch Mtn returns with his characteristically intimate and melancholic whisper-folk.

Dana Gavanski joins Kaiya Cade on the haunting ‘Garden’, Fazed on a Pony serves up a dose of wonky nostalgia and Goodbye Max welcomes us back into his wistful warmth with the modest wonder of ‘Search Party.’ Then there’s the icy pop of Bloodhype, the whimsical momentum of Plant Food, not to mention the playful hush of Lewtrakimou and cool swagger of Saint Charles. Mixing things up, Henoheno and Fair Mothers offer different takes on patient, sprawling music—the ethereal gloom of the former matched in mood and scope by the foreboding creep of the latter.

Elsewhere, Unisex offer a carefree sway with ‘Let the Tide Take You’, Fairy Godmother a garage rock washed with dreamy haze and the likes of Ratbath, Hairpins, Suzy Jivotovski (of GRNDMS) and Deer Scout all provide stellar examples of intimate bedroom folk. Then, in a fitting finale, Smith’s own Good Good Blood teams up with Astral Social Club for mammoth closer ‘Heathen Astronaut’.

With ambient textures and electronic beeps and glimpses of sincere emotion peeking through the fog, the track acts as a kind of summary of the compilation and therefore the Fox Food Record’s mission as a whole. Heartfelt, experimental, bound not by expectation or convention but rather some gut-level intuition. Together, the elements coalesce into an intangible yet sustained sense of spirit, something far more powerful and lasting than anything done alone. This might not be something than can be adequately put into words, but that it exists is a testament to Smith’s judgement and effort. Because something is there, even if you’re not sure what.

Deer Scout – Sad Boy

After the excellent EP, Customs (which we described as “at once sort of sad and strangely uplifting”), Dena Miller’s Deer Scout is back with a brand new single, ‘Sad Boy’. Complete with a video directed by Haftom Khasai and Nick Morgan, and produced by Neuromantic Productions, the track sees Miller adopt additional production and straight-eyed confidence, toeing the line between sincere intimacy and cool commentary. As such, the track serves as a neat put down for every tortured male with a guitar, and a high five for all the female, trans and non-binary people (what Miller calls “non-dudes”) who write honest, earnest music without due recognition. “The issue isn’t men being vulnerable,” Miller says. “The issue is that non-dudes have always embraced softness and vulnerability and never get enough credit for it.”

Outside The Academy – Anaesthetise

Recording project of Australia’s Pawel Cholewa, Outside The Academy follows up his second EP with a brand new winter single (in the southern hemisphere, at least), ‘Anaesthetise’. Something between bummed-out bedroom folk and psychedelic electro pop, the track is a slow, glassy number which plays something like Todd Goldstein’s ARMS projected through space, the dancey electronics and catchy vocals stretched sombre and strange by a minimalistic glitch.

Idan Altman – Heroic Bee

Taken from Idan Altman’s forthcoming album, Expiration Date, ‘Heroic Bee’ is a sprawling experimental track that utilises a whole host of sounds and techniques to create a uniquely alive soundscape. With everything from synths, guitar and piano to crowd recordings and bee sounds, the song has a peculiarly natural rhythm, cyclical and familiar but also idiosyncratic, packed with small quirks and details which accumulate into a breathing ecosystem.

Crumb – Plants

Following up the excellent self-titled EP on Citrus City, Lila Ramani’s Crumb last week unveiled another brand new release, Locket. Smashing together influences as diverse as art rock, 60s psychedelica and jazz, the band create a mesmeric, swirling sound that’s somehow leisurely and intense all at once—a hallucinatory dream that follows you into the day. Check out single ‘Plants’ below for a dose of lightheaded nostalgia:

Midwestern Exposure – Riverboat

Earlier this month, Philly’s Midwestern Exposure release their latest LP, The West. Fifth track ‘Riverboat’ encapsulates all that’s great with the record, a textured, twangy brand of folk rock that’s as catchy as it is evocative. As such, the song ticks both boxes, packing the grand themes and finger-picked atmosphere of traditional folk while fronting a positive, almost optimistic energy. Fans of The Cave Singers and Dr Dog take note.

Flamingods – Bhima

After last year’s captivating debut, Majesty, the Bahrain-via-London group Flamingods have joined Moshi Moshi to release brand new EP, Kewali. Further pushing the boundaries, the release finds the band feeding off its own energy like some machine of perpetual motion, the genre needle flicking somewhere between retro dance, pervasive rock and cultic chant. ‘Bhima’ is perhaps the best introduction, frenetic and fervent and fantastically odd, opening like a theme song to a old TV show from another dimension and morphing into a powerful, hypnotic intonation.

Sammus – Pieces In Space

Okay, so we’re stretching the ‘new music’ tag here, but Pieces in Space is a record we’ve been meaning to write about for a while now. Sammus does hip-hop her own way, lush beats backing her frantic, often ferocious rhymes which entwine popular culture, social issues and personal experience, what the press release describes as “raw confessions, pro-weirdo anthems, and clever musings on modern life.” As such, the record manages to sound grounded while holding lofty intentions, simultaneously taking on the big stuff and painting a vivid portrait of a recognisably dysfunctional twenty-first century existence.

Pieces in Space is out now via Don Giovanni Records and you can get it from Bandcamp.

Will Graefe – Blood Feather

After touring as a guitarist for Okkervil River, Petra Haden, Larkin Grimm and many others, this summer sees Will Graefe release his debut solo record, North America. Written on the road, the name proves to be apt—the album weaving American themes of travel and distance, yearning and loss, into a lush, lonely record with sizeable scope and even bigger heart. A prime example of this sound, ‘Blood Feather’ is at once cynical and optimistic, facing reality with a sly grin but never quite able to shake dreams of a better future from within its chest.

North America is out now on Pretty Purgatory and you can get it from Bandcamp.

What this translates as is a really nice collection of lo-fi DIY pop songs. Stand-outs include Libbie 2000’s ‘sister saint’ cover, which introduces some crunchy guitar to smooth bedroom pop, and ‘be good’ by thanks for coming, which brings to mind Long Neck.

There are also appearances from WTD fav Tall Friend, who covers Waxahatchee’s ‘Brother Bryan’, bedbug, who provide a take on ‘Troubled Medium’ by P.S. Eliot, and Deer Scout who covers ‘clumsy’ in her usual delicate style.

All 22 tracks are great, so why not make a small donation and check them all out? You’ll probably find your new favourite band in the process. Proceeds of the project will be split between between two great causes: the Standing Rock Sioux of North and South Dakota to help with their protest against the Dakota access pipeline, and the council of American-Islamic relations’ New York chapter, which has a particularly important role given recent political developments.

Much has been said recently about how political turmoil and social instability will provide fertile conditions for great art, and whether or not you subscribe to this idea, we’re pretty sure that paying artists makes for even better soil in which to sow creative seeds. The title to this post says ‘free’ music because it’s snappier than ‘name your price’ music, but really that’s a convenient/attention-grabbing misnomer. The week saw the second such collaboration, this time with Philadelphia blog sensation Swell Tone. Curated by Shana Hartzel, Summer of Sad is a ten-song release featuring a range of styles and genres linked by the common themes of being 1) summery, 2) sad, 3) great. Or, as Shana puts it:

“Summer of Sad is about the quiet moments of the hottest season. It’s the warm breeze on a moonlit night and the mellow release of melancholia as you float down the river on an inner-tube in the hot, hot sun. A collaboration between Philly music blog Swell Tone and Slovakian tape label Z Tapes, the compilation combines 10 songs from female artists and female-fronted bands to create a dual atmosphere of summer’s brightness and the depths of longing. As if time were being kept by the creak of an old, back porch swing, the songs sway with an effortless sincerity.”

‘Icebergs’ by Bevelers opens, playing like some mountain hymn for the twenty-first century, while ‘Bad Way’ by Pop & Obachan is a slow, dreamy rock jam that seems caught between light and dark. “You arrived a surprise in the strangest way,” sings Emma Tringali, “what started as hate ended as a beautiful thing”. Lomelda’s glitchy folk rock follows, ‘Ya w/Me?’ insular and downbeat yet also somehow warm in its incredibly human heartbreak:

“So you don’t wanna be a family
You told me
Sitting at the table that my grandparents left for me
I just poured you another glass
Did ya notice
The silence that passed is all that lasts?
Where did ya go?”

Summer Flake’s ‘Shoot and Score’ is a slightly off-kilter rock tune, the vocals sliding over the music in monotone sheets, always threatening to deepen into something more dark or dangerous but never quite following through. ‘bat’ by CBMC’s ÓOR is a submerged bedroom number, the instrumentation rippling like the surface of a pond, while Queen of Jeans’ cover of Roy Orbison’s ‘In Dreams’ is seized by a timeless, romantic melancholy, the dramatic drums and crooned vocals conjuring that perfect tortured state unique to country singers and Hollywood actors.

The second cover, Candace’s rendition of Buffalo Springfield’s ‘Way Home’, is similarly arresting, snaking between fond sadness in the verses and the carefree forgiveness (or at least forget) in the chorus. Mia Loucks follows this with ‘summer’, a song both muffled and bright, as though sung the bottom of a swimming pool, lit electric blue during a sweaty August night. Sarah M.’s ‘t-shirt’ worms its way gradually out from beneath heavy bass, the energy rising across its run-time, before Deer Scout closes the release with ‘Haus’. Half-paced and soft, this is a song for those late summer nights where autumn comes knocking, darkness arriving a little too early, cool damp creeping into the fabric of things. Luckily, Dena Miller’s vocals are the perfect antidote, weaving a blanket in which to wrap yourself, through the night and winter both.

Working as a stellar release in its own right, as well as an introduction to ten acts that will soon be amongst your favourites, Summer of Sad is pretty much the perfect compilation, and a great example of the special things that can happen when enthusiastic people team up and combine their energies.

Opener ‘holy ghost’ is a gentle and heartfelt track about not abandoning a sense of wonder and belief in something bigger than yourself, even if you can’t follow the rigid rules/beliefs of organised religion. The song reminds us that there is enough to be found in small everyday things and people.

“holy ghost I barely recognize you
something that you changed about your face
I have a thought I want to run it by you
but it might be a sin to speculate
and I could find a new kind of devotion
I could know you by another name”

The remaining three tracks follow a similar introspective path. ‘little state’ sounds sad but also bright and clear and hopeful, backed by Steve Jagoda’s drums, while ‘up high’ is about looking up to someone (“I want you, wanna be you / can you teach me how to fix my bike?). Closer ‘train song’ is a gentle folk song about feelings and uncertainty.

“You’re pulling smoke into you lungs
talking about what it means to be young
to be the smoke inside your lungs
to be the words on the tip of your tongue”
