]]> As the lead songwriter and frontman of San Luis Obispo band Candle, Kevin Coons developed a warm and emotive writing style, the anchor around which he explored the intersections of folk, indie and garage rock. A real sense of storytelling emerged too, told within an ambitious, image-led lyricism that drew upon the heavyweights like Townes Van Zandt. Having since gone solo, Coons has put out a number of releases under his own name, most recently the album Wind Watches Moon, though the pandemic stymied his ability to take the record on the road.

But with the extra time and space afforded by the pandemic, Kevin Coons set to working on his craft, and ‘Out of the Blue’ is the first taste of a brand new collection of songs. Perhaps shaped by the conditions within which is came into being, the song seeks out optimism within a lonely world, connecting to the textures of immediate surroundings while dreaming of some distant comfort too. A track grounded in the present, yet caught up in visions of the past and future—sensations so palpable they almost feel real.

Red leaves wheeling through the afternoon
Outside the cathedral where the millionaires swoon
Before I wrapped myself in the salty cocoon
Missing your silent hand and your harvest moon
Only you can see the way I want to be
Slowly dragging my dusk towards reverie
