A Beacon School – Potion

After the success of previous LP Cola, A Beacon School (AKA New York songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Patrick J Smith) has announced a return with brand new full-length yoyo later this year via Grind Select. The previous album was notable for its ability to combine bright pop with shoegaze and electronic elements, and lead single ‘Potion’ suggests the new record furthers this style. A song of sunny tones and pressing energy which provides all the lush textures of dream pop without sacrificing any of the detail or momentum. “‘Potion’ was written in one sitting back in 2019 and has been a live staple since then,” Smith explains. “It’s about feeling a burst of excitement about something new but also the fear that accompanies it.” Check out the video by Chase Wagner below:

yoyo is out on the 13th October 13 via Grind Select and you can pre-order it now.

Bo Milli – Making Friends

Be it the digital age dramas of ‘FOMO‘ or the climate anxiety of ‘Good Kid‘, Bergen-based songwriter Bo Milli is an artist dialled in to the pressing issues of the contemporary moment. Latest standalone single ‘Making Friends’ is no less immediate in its concerns, though its focus has a more timeless quality. A track which charts the rollercoaster ride of young life through the prism of a hectic night out, capturing a sense of both the carefree abandon and creeping loneliness of late nights, new faces and a sense of endless possibility.

‘Making Friends’ is out now and available from the Bo Milli Bandcamp page.

Cal Rifkin – Break My Heart

Based in Washington D.C., Cal Rifkin is the project of Erik Grimm (guitar/vocals), Keith Butler Jr. (drums) and Robin Rhodes (bass) who bonded over a “shared love for greasy Ledo’s pizza, early 90s baseball aesthetics, and rock ‘n’ roll music.” Late last month, the trio released Better Luck Next Time, a five-song EP that plays like a distillation of their signature style, namely hook-laden power pop with singalong choruses, vocal harmonies and enough noisy rock ‘n roll grit to keep the rock heads onside. There’s absolutely no filler across the record, but current favourite ‘Break My Heart’ might be the best introduction. It’s an energetic rock song that skirts the line between cool and sincere, complete with a ludicrously catchy chorus.

So come on and break my heart in two
Could be the best thing you could do

Isabel Crespo Pardo – la línea será

Based in New York, Isabel Crespo Pardo is a Latinx vocalist, improviser-composer and interdisciplinary artist. Combining music, visual art, text and performance, their work is a web of both composition and improvisation that sets out to explore (and then evolve in response to) what they describe as “the intra/interpersonal spaces they inhabit.” Later this month, Pardo will release an album, el rostro (des)cubierto, on Lobby Art Records, “forty minutes of wondering and wandering with hand over heart,” as they put it, “aching in solitude and giving and craving forgiveness.” Lead single ‘la línea será’ introduces the record’s sound, which sees Pardo joined by Afarin Nazarijou (qanun) Skyler Hill (electric guitar) and Seajun Kwon (acoustic bass) to create something that sounds somehow novel and timeless.

el rostro (des)cubierto by Isabel Crespo Pardo
el rostro (des)cubierto will be released on 20th June via Lobby Art Records. You can pre-order it now from Bandcamp.

Katie Von Schleicher – Elixir

Since her last record Consummation released in 2020 on Full Time Hobby and Ba Da Bing Records, Katie Von Schleicher has released a handful of singles; first two b-sides from the album and then standalone piece ‘could’ which she described as “a fun foray into the world of strings.” Fast forward a couple of years and the Brooklyn-based artist has unveiled a new single, ‘Elixir’. Released via Durham, NC label Sipsman, the track is a duet with Aly Spaltro (aka Lady Lamb) and showcases a lighter, more playful side to Von Schleicher’s work, all droll delivery and cuttingly sincere lyrics. “How can I reach out to the poems that I’ve loved, embrace plain speech more,” Von Schleicher asks of the song’s inspiration, “and how, for just one goddamned time, can I bring my sense of humour into my music?”

Elixir by Katie Von Schleicher
‘Elixir’ is out now and available from the Katie Von Schleicher Bandcamp page.

my body with blood – Time and Again

‘Time and Again’ introduces the music of Asheville-based slowcore project, my body with blood. Together with Eli Whitlow (drums), Ivo Pestana (bass) and Cass Dayton (backing vocals), they make a melancholic but never morose sound, probing into the frustrations of a repeating pattern. “I lost a friend, his father tried / To bring me back to Jesus,” goes one of the verses. “The year will end / And I’ll count the ways that I’ve failed.” But there’s a certain sense of reflection to the tone, a perspective only gained by some modicum of distance, and with it the prospect that such cycles might at least be weathered if not entirely conquered.

It’s the same
Time, time and again
I’ve memorized the cycle
The cycle by now

Pony Girl – Laff It Off

Following on from last year’s shadowy Enny One Will Love You, Pony Girl are returning later this year with new LP, Laff It Off, on Paper Bag Records. A release described as a sister record to the previous album, examining many of the same themes and situations but this time with a focus on the playful side of things. The title track is itself the twin of previous single, ‘Running in Circles‘, which we described as “a slow-burning pop number which slowly unravels into something more chaotic as another crushingly mundane day in work pushes the narrator to the brink.” The new single presents us with the same situation but reacts differently, a refusal in the face of the employment grindstone which emerges with bright humanity intact. “We first wrote [the refrain] ‘I don’t wanna be working every day’ as a lark,” the band explain, “but ultimately fell for it as a chant to get through the next shift.” Watch the video below produced by K Collective and directed by DELGATZ:

Laff It Off is out via Paper Bag Records on the 27th October and you can pre-order it now.

Quinn Devlin – Movie Scene

Back in April we featured ‘Lilian’, a single from Pennsylvania-born multi-instrumentalist Quinn Devlin, a track we described as “solo intimacy blown up into something communal, the sound’s careful richness developing into an affirming final chorus.” Devlin has since been picked up by Lorkin O’Reilly’s A For Effort Records, and plans to release full-length album Pair Of Threes later this year. In the meantime, new track ‘Movie Scene’ gives a taster of what’s to come. Its winding folk style paints a summer afternoon in all of its ideal fondness, channelling the country classics to invoke a nostalgically golden hue.

Pair Of Threes is out this September via A For Effort Records.

Stephen Steinbrink – Cruiser

With new album Disappearing Coin coming later this summer on Western Vinyl, Stephen Steinbrink has unveiled a brand new single, ‘Cruiser’. The record’s title refers to a magician’s trick Steinbrink saw on Youtube—where a coin is made to vanish in front of a viewing highschooler—speaking to the blend of ordinary and extraordinary which marks the songs. The new single aims to reach for the perspective of this amazed, awkward bystander. An attempt to write from the perspective of a character embedded within the “conservative defoliated suburban environments,” a landscape familiar to Steinbrink from his own youth, with Boy Scouts (AKA Boy Scouts) lending vocals too. As he continues:

This character feels he has to hide what he loves, hyper-vigilant for opportunities to mold himself into a shape that will be accepted by the people around him, independent because no one is paying attention. There are parts of myself in the character, but it’s mostly an amalgamation of friends I grew up with in the punk/DIY scene in Phoenix in the late 2000s before we all moved away.

Disappearing Coin is out on the 18th August via Western Vinyl and you can pre-order it now.

At the end of each year we like to collect our favourite ‘name your price’ music on Bandcamp (or free ones elsewhere). 2016 was another year chock full of great, financially flexible releases, so over the next week or so we’ll be sharing the list in alphabetically arranged segments.

Much has been said recently about how political turmoil and social instability will provide fertile conditions for great art, and whether or not you subscribe to this idea, we’re pretty sure that paying artists makes for even better soil in which to sow creative seeds. The title to this post says ‘free’ music because it’s snappier than ‘name your price’ music, but really that’s a convenient/attention-grabbing misnomer. Bandcamp provides pretty much the most direct way for us to connect directly with musicians and support their work from all over the world, so why don’t we utilise this tool and ensure that art perseveres in the face of everything else that’s going on?

Anyhow, here’s the first segment of the list, covering artists beginning with A – D. We don’t pretend to be in any way comprehensive, so let us know if we missed your favourite and maybe we’ll add it to the list.Albosel – Container

It’s that time of year again, time to think about our favourite songs of 2016.

We first featured the music of Boy Scouts, aka San Francisco’s Taylor Vick, last summer. Back then we said that we hoped Boy Scouts would have a more substantial release soon, and what do you know, that hope has come true. The project’s debut album, Homeroom Breakfast, has just been released, and its everything we thought a Boy Scouts full-length would be.

The opening track ‘Ode’ introduces both the sound and themes of the album very nicely. “Twenty five, barely getting by”, Vick sings “you’re still the guy I look to, do you know why?”, before the song kicks up with percussion and a sweet and catchy chorus of “we don’t say it / but we don’t need to”.

The second track is the super short ‘I Mean These Things’, which is almost like a standalone chorus about the way a loved one can erase all doubt and worry (“everything i write is the same and everything i mean i don’t say / ‘cept you and i fall right out of the category”). The stripped back acoustics on ‘Marinate’ match the song’s atmosphere perfectly, the first time the album hits a purely sad and reflective note, as Vick sings,

“i’m an introvert attracted to the
extrovert lifestyle
can i be me
if i change my mind
and be more worthwhile”

‘July 9 2015’ has a real Free Cake For Every Creature vibe, the gentle indie pop backed with shambling percussion. In a premiere with our friends at The Le Sigh, Vick explains that the song was written in response to finishing college and moving back home. But refreshingly, the song isn’t the regular future-gazing that post-university blues usually bring. As Vick explains,

“I was journaling in the coffee shop across the street from my apartment and it was one of the first moments I allowed myself to be like, “what just happened?!!” instead of “ok now what? what’s next now that you’ve graduated?” it felt like I was losing sight of all the growth and experiences I just had because I was constantly thinking about what was expected of me to do next. I just wanted to write about the present moment and about the things I was sure of instead of allowing myself to be engulfed by my uncertainty.”

The atmosphere is decidedly understated on ’23’, a song about getting older in years but not necessarily in mind (at least all the time) that’s full of nice turn of phrase like “i’m a selfish hugger / you’re a confusing lover”. We described ‘Did You See Me Cry’ previously as “a song with a soft and sad confidence, building to a finale of layered vocals”, the delicate acoustic guitar ringing quietly behind words thick with self-reflection and some kind of acceptance.

“i can keep four friendships alive
that’s my quota for this life
cigarettes out front the laundromat
say what you said and take it back”

‘Blue’ doesn’t sound as sad as the title and lyrics suggest, a subtly grooving bass line supporting one of the more upbeat sounding tracks on the album, while finale ‘The Park Behind Walmart’ has its own quiet confidence, with slapped drums and nicely layered vocals that twine around one another.

“walking walmart shopping center
i’d never been better
on my own two feet”

Boy Scouts makes sad-sounding songs that are a lot more than mere wallowing in self pity. There are no immediately rough edges, the whole atmosphere gently contemplative rather than bitterly confessional, but things aren’t sugar-coated either. The lack of angry snarls doesn’t mean everything is peachy, but equally the sad and lonely bedroom pop vibe doesn’t mean things are terrible either. And that’s the real triumph of the album, because it feels true.

Homeroom Breakfast is out on Mt. Home Arts and is available on cassette with lovely silk-screened art by Nora Einbender-Luks. You can also get it on a name-your-price download via the Boy Scouts Bandcamp page.

Boy Scouts is the project of Taylor Vick from San Francisco. We featured some of her demos last year, and now she’s released her debut full-length, Homeroom Breakfast, with the folks at Mt. Home Arts. Our review of the album is still in the works, but until then we had the chance to ask Taylor a few questions about her recording process, influences and the partnership with Mt. Home Arts. Enjoy!

Hi Taylor, thanks for chatting with us! How is life now that your debut album, Homeroom Breakfast is out in the world?

Hello! Yes, having that out in the world has been real nice. It’s always a good feeling to finish a project, ya know, and this is my first time having physical copies of my music so I’m super stoked about that aspect! An amazing artist/pal named Nora Einbender-Luks did the art and it’s so cool to have kind of created something with someone else.

Your Bandcamp page says the album was written and recorded in both Brooklyn and San Francisco. Was there a reason for this split? And what’s your recording process like?

My last semester of college was in Brooklyn and that was the same time I started working on this album – so the first few tracks I wrote and recorded were done in my apartment there, and the rest were recorded in my apartment in San Francisco once I moved back after school.
I kind of write or at least add to songs as I’m recording, so the recording process for me is a lot of trial and error and is so much fun. I often have just the basic structure of a song when I go to record because I mostly hear new parts as I’m listening back to it rather than while I’m playing or writing it.. I use garageband, a borrowed mic + interface from my friend Rose or my iphone built in mic, and whatever instruments I can get my hands on. Luckily I have lived with/know a lot of musicians so I’ve been able to use a lot of other peoples stuff and it’s been great!

Who/what would you cite as your main influences?

Woah! I love thinking about this. My brother Travis Vick and my friend Rose Droll are for sure my main influences. They both are incredible musicians, performers, people. Also my brother got me into really good music at a young age so I’m really grateful for that. I’ve always had a strong connection to Rose’s music and now we’re friends and are each other’s #1 fans so it’s really rad and powerful – both Travis and Rose inspire the heck out of me!

I feel like a lot of people immediately put artists in your genre into a sad/lonely box without much thought, so I’m going to ask you outright – Do you consider your songs sad and lonely?

I don’t think so. I think because I’m not sad or lonely, I can’t consider them as that even though others might (which is fine). My songs might have glimpses of sadness or whatever, which is because the best outlet for me if I’m sad is to write a song or a lyric or something. So I understand why people might think that. But yeah, I think other feelings than sadness can be felt when listening to a song that might be deemed as sad so I try not to write off an artist as being sad/lonely because sometimes connecting over something sad can feel really good… if that makes sense.

The album has been released on cassette with Mt. Home Arts. How do you feel about releasing it with them and how did the relationship come about?

Mt. Home Arts is so awesome and great! Releasing an album with them has been so cool, I feel very lucky and happy to have had the opportunity. I emailed for a long time with Tim Woulfe, one of the founders of Apollonian Sound (who has since merged with Mt. Home Arts!) about releasing my music with them, we ended up doing a few shows together on the east coast last month and I got to release my album on their label. It all feels very good. They are great people.

Your debut release was self-produced and released. Do you have any advice or sage wisdom for other people young or old who are thinking about grabbing a guitar and recording something at home?

Oh man! Some of the best advice I’ve heard and think I also read once on an Alex G AMA was to make music that you want to hear. I would also say to not think that you’re limited because you’re recording at home or by yourself. I still don’t know much at all about recording or mixing, but that’s what makes experimenting so fun. You can do whatever you want and can create this audible, invisible thing, it’s so awesome. Experiment and share what you’re excited about with someone, or everyone. Do what feels good.

Finally, what 4 or 5 bands/artists have you been listening to recently? They can be brand new or a hundred years old, whatever you’re into.

I’m recently very into Andy Shauf’s albums The Party and The Bearer of Bad News. Also Diners’ album Three. WHY? is probably my favorite band ever so I’m still always listening to them and also to Elliott Smith for forever.

Boy Scouts is the recording project of Taylor Vick who hails from sunny San Francisco. She makes the kind of lo-fi, bedroom-recorded, acoustic songs that we’re pretty fond of here at WTD, and I must say she does it rather well. Boy Scouts has a Soundcloud and a Bandcamp page, with some really nice demos spread between the two.

Her Soundcloud has the most recent material, including ‘The End Of It’, which offsets its air of general melancholy with a warm and fuzzy atmosphere, and ‘Did You See Me Cry’ which is my current favourite, a song with a soft and sad confidence, building to a finale of layered vocals

The latest release on Bandcamp is from back in January. Simply entitled 3, it comprises of (you guessed it) three songs which follow the template I described above. Fans of hopeful sad-kid bedroom acts such as Frankie Cosmos, FCFEC and Whatever, Dad will love it.

That’s all for now folks! Hopefully Boy Scouts will have a more substantial release in the near future. Be sure to keep on eye on Soundcloud and Bandcamp in case that happens.
