<p>“A diverse album entirely committed to whatever direction each song takes, as though leaning into the spontaneity of the moment.” That’s how we have previously described <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2022/11/16/blue-yonder-movies/"><em>Wise Blood</em></a>, the forthcoming album by <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/Blue-yonder">Blue Yonder</a> on <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/earth-libraries">Earth Libraries</a>. With the release now on the horizon, the band have unveiled final single, ‘Nightingale’, and this time they pitch us right into the middle of a seventies spaghetti western. The song opens with a nocturnal simmer, Karalena Fjortoft’s vocals emerging with an almost haunting croon, though soon the rhythm picks up and adds a sense of urgency, as though the dark figures at the door have been evaded and now we are racing across the desert floor with only the moon in pursuit.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Dari Bay &#8211; Same Old Bumpy Road</h3>
<p>Described as &#8220;an ongoing thought experiment disguised as a band,&#8221; Dari Bay is the project of Burlington, Vermont&#8217;s Zack James. Though originating as something rough and chaotic, new album <em>Longest Day of the Year</em> sees the Dari Bay style morph into an altogether smoother sound, albeit with some of the strangeness left intact. Take &#8216;Same Old Bumpy Road&#8217;, the country pop jangle a clear departure from the harsh and often abstract noise of the previous releases, while a certain playfulness underpins everything. Life is no less odd for Dari Bay, they are just finding new ways to describe it.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Emelia Austin &#8211; Shifting Weather</h3>
<p>With debut album <em>From Another Sky</em> coming very soon via <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/anxiety-blanket-records/">Anxiety Blanket Records</a>, Emelia Austin has been releasing a series of single to offer glimpses into her style. Tracks like &#8216;Hand Soft&#8217; and &#8216;Desire to Reveal&#8217; hinted at the amalgamation of sparkle and cloudiness which constitutes her shoegaze-adjacent sound, though it is the hefty closer &#8216;Shifting Weather&#8217; which is perhaps the perfect introduction to <em>From Another Sky</em>. A slow song which gathers weight behind itself gradually, like a thunderhead coalescing into something dense and charged before its tumultuous finale, offering a cathartic view of possible futures where you come to accept yourself just as you are.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Kassi Valazza &#8211; Watching Planes Go By</h3>
<p>Having introduced herself in 2019 with debut album <em>Dear Dead Days</em> and consolidated the style with last year&#8217;s EP <em>Highway Sounds</em>, Kassi Valazza has established herself among the new generation of country songwriters who build their craft around celebrating and subverting the traditions of the genre. With new album <em>Kassi Valazza Knows Nothing </em>out via <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/loose-music/">Loose Music</a> (UK) and <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/fluff-and-gravy-records/">Fluff &amp; Gravy Records</a> (US), Valazza is now a labelmate of acts like of <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/anna-tivel/">Anna Tivel</a>, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/margo-cilker/">Margo Cilker</a> and <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/courtney-marie-andrews">Courtney Marie Andrews</a>, and single &#8216;Watching Planes Go By&#8217; shows she belongs among such company. A song centred on ideas of loss and the inability to move on which draws a psych-inflected richness around itself, it bears all the hallmarks of the best retro tracks while refusing to fall for nostalgic imitation.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;"> L.T. Leif &#8211; Gentle Moon</h3>
<p>Back in December we previewed <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2022/12/05/l-t-leif-pass-back-through/"><em>Come Back To Me, But Lightly</em></a>, the a release from L.T. Leif released by <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/lost-map-records/">Lost Map Records</a> in collaboration with OK Pal. An album in which the Calgary-born, Scotland-based artist &#8220;draws on both the imagery of these northern climes and the talent which resides there to create songs able to explore intimate processes of development.&#8221; The album has just been released, and opener &#8216;Gentle Moon&#8217; captures the compassionate and striking tone for anyone who still needs convincing. A song which uses lunar imagery to explore the wax and wane of relationships, not to mention the gravitational pull which seems to hold some power over the smallest and largest of things. <h3 style="text-align: center;">Party of the Sun &#8211; Forget Me Knot</h3>
<p>&#8220;Psych-inflected folk songs anchored to the natural environments in which they were created, tracks possessing both tension and harmony.&#8221; So we wrote of <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2022/08/17/party-of-the-sun-capsule-ii/"><em>Capsule II</em></a>, the previous EP from <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/new-hampshire/">New Hampshire</a>&#8216;s <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/party-of-the-sun/">Party of the Sun</a> on <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/trailing-twelve-records/">Trailing Twelve Records</a>. Next month sees the release of the appropriately named follow-up <em>Capsule III</em>, and lead single &#8216;Forget Me Knot&#8217; suggests the psych-folk outfit are continuing to push this style. A song which lives up to its title, the careful details and easy intuition evoking the patterns of a forest or perhaps the knotted layers of the trunks themselves, eventually rising into a soaring crescendo in the closing minutes.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Saloon Dion &#8211; I Don&#8217;t Feel</h3>
<p><a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/bristol/">Bristol</a> post-punks <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/saloon-dion/">Saloon Dion</a> are back with a new single, ‘I Don’t Feel’, the first taste of their forthcoming debut EP on Mucker Records. It follows a spate of singles in the last few years that have established the five piece’s distinctive style, what we <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2022/02/24/saloon-dion-hey-hey/">previously described</a> as “an eclectic blend of punk and funk topped by raw and volatile energy.” Delivered with considerable pop polish, ‘I Don’t Feel’ is built on grooving beats and bass riffs, its big chorus hinting at a future of radio airtime and festival appearances. “[It’s] a song about being reluctant to seek help from others,” Saloon Dion explain. “What it isn&#8217;t, is a song about having no feeling, but more of choosing what to feel and when to feel it. It speaks of the barriers we all put up to protect ourselves, no matter the damage they may do in the long run”.<br />

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Symbol Soup &#8211; Overdressed</h3>
<p>The project of <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/london/">London</a>-based songwriter Michael Rea, Symbol Soup takes inspiration from folk, country, indie pop and electronica to create something that sounds sunny and insouciant. Latest single ‘Overdressed’ is a great introduction, fusing a classic British folk charm with something rather more American, including faint notes of country and a couple of spoonfuls of Alex G-style lo-fi indie rock. What Rea describes as “a love song from the perspective of someone who’s overly cynical,” ‘Overdressed’ takes aim at the superficial nature of human interaction, its narrator sick and tired of meaningless etiquette and small talk, yearning instead for something deeper. “They don’t learn a whole lot by the end of the song,” Rea continues, “but they are fully connected to one person, and that’s the connection to something deeper that they’re desperate for.” Check out the lighthearted if indigestion-inducing video, directed by Kirsty Wells of Kondor Films, below:</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Zoon &#8211; A Language Disappears</h3>
<p>Following the success of recent EPs <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2022/06/07/zoon-astum/"><em>Big Pharma</em></a> and <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2022/09/26/zoon-a-sterling-murmuration-ep/"><em>A Sterling Murmuration</em></a>, Daniel Monkman&#8217;s <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/zoon/">Zoon</a> is set to release brand new full-length <em>Bekka Ma’iingan</em> this spring on <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/paper-bag-records/">Paper Bag Records</a>. The Zoon sound is a constantly evolving thing, and with guests and contributors including Owen Pallett, Michael Peter Olsen, Andrew McLeod (Sunnsetter) and Lee Ranaldo (Sonic Youth), the new album is no exception. But as single &#8216;A Language Disappears&#8217; suggests with its themes of lost heritage, the sense is that Zoon is not morphing away from its origin but rather moving closer to some central truth. &#8220;This album is about acknowledging a part of me that I felt was there the whole time,&#8221; as Monkman puts it. 										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Earlier in the month we introduced <em>Wise Blood</em>, an upcoming album from <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/blue-yonder/">Blue Yonder</a> on <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/earth-libraries/">Earth Libraries</a> which had something of a troubled creation. &#8220;While in the woods of upstate New York,&#8221; we wrote, &#8220;they were forced to contend with a variety of trials and hazards, from a potentially haunted tape machine and bad mushroom trips to the escape of their house cat (named, fittingly, Bigfoot).&#8221; But rather than descending into Jack Torrance-style madness, the band spun the situation to their advantage, using the difficulties as a way to ground the songs&#8217; emotional immediacy, and give them a sense of authentic energy and tension which is impossible to fake. As lead guitarist and album producer DJ O&#8217;loane puts it: &#8220;I like the immediacy of capturing a moment in time and having to commit to it.&#8221;</p>
<p>The process goes some way to explaining the distinctive sound of <em>Wise Blood</em>. A diverse album entirely committed to whatever direction each song takes, as though leaning into the spontaneity of the moment. Which is how haunting atmospheres and pressing energies can exist side by side, and the vibe can shift between the weight of nineties rock classics to the evocative playfulness of a spaghetti western soundtrack. As though by retreating to a cabin in the middle of nowhere, Blue Yonder managed to distil an even purer form of escapism, their songs a collection of cinematic vignettes which come to represent their own little world.</p>
<p>Today we have the pleasure of sharing &#8216;Movies&#8217;, the brand new single from the album which takes on just such themes. It&#8217;s a slow and sultry track situated within a swampy summer, Karalena Fjortoft&#8217;s lyrics pining for a place to flee to away from the heat and light and constant nagging thoughts. A place perhaps not always considered an oasis, but fitting nonetheless. &#8220;The greatest invention for escapists is the Movies and this song is dedicated to them,&#8221; the band explain. A cool, dark room full of distraction. What else could a distressed person need?</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<h3 style="text-align: center;">ash tuesday &#8211; No Blood, No Needles, Nothing</h3>
<p>ash tuesday is the bedroom pop project of Georgia-based Ashlynn Kilcrease, who has fostered a steady following over the last few years sharing her music on TikTok. Her latest single, &#8216;No Blood, No Needles, Nothing&#8217; released last week and is the perfect introduction to her emotive songwriting. Whereas previous tracks have been built on electric guitar and percussion, &#8216;No Blood, No Needles, Nothing&#8217; is stripped back to the bare bones, just acoustic guitar and Kilcrease&#8217;s vocals. The raw production values add to the turbulent atmosphere, as the lyrics paint images of broken glass, insecurities and a sense of latent violence. &#8220;Thinking you never were really safe,&#8221; Kilcrease repeats in the finale, her voice swirled with others that seemingly come from nowhere, like anxious thoughts rising to the surface.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Blue Yonder &#8211; Wise Blood</h3>
<p>Retreating to an isolated cabin in the wilderness might be a tried and tested way to record a new album, but while the likes of Justin Vernon found romance in the solitude, Blue Yonder had a different experience. While in the woods of upstate <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/new-york/">New York</a>, they were forced to contend with a variety of trials and hazards, from a potentially haunted tape machine and bad mushroom trips to the escape of their house cat (named, fittingly, Bigfoot). But these experience only furthered the emotional immediacy of singer and guitarist Karalena Fjortoft&#8217;s songwriting. The resulting record <em>Wise Blood</em>, out next February via <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/earth-libraries/">Earth Libraries</a>, is therefore charged with an energy difficult to replicate, the title track hinting at the intimate yet often cinematic style. <h3 style="text-align: center;">Corntuth &#8211; F-001</h3>
<p>Described as a post-apocalyptic concept record, the forthcoming album <em>Letters To My Robot Son</em> by <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/brooklyn/">Brooklyn</a>-based ambient musician Corntuth promises to be a lesson in world building. &#8220;Like the analog synthesizers of the mid-80s,&#8221; they explain, &#8220;robot children are programmed via sequenced sound on magnetic cassette tapes. These tapes, supposedly, can teach a machine to feel.&#8221; Lead single &#8216;F-001&#8217; gives some indication of how such a detailed story can be brought to life in instrumental ambient songs. With slow washes supporting playful details, the track achieves both bright curiosity and meditative grace, with an underlying melancholy too.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Daisy the Great &#8211; Time Machine</h3>
<p>Fronted by  Kelley Nicole Dugan and Mina Walker, Brooklyn pop ensemble Daisy the Great combine the sincerity of Bridgers/Dacus indie rock lineage with lush folk harmonies, and a sprinkling of bedroom pop vulnerability thrown in for good measure, though latest single &#8216;Time Machine&#8217; shows off another dimension to their new album, <em>All You Need Is Time</em>. It&#8217;s the frantic and cutting tone which marks the Anthropocene, where the sense of impending doom is matched only by a desire to go back to better times, though one complicated by the nagging doubt we&#8217;d do things exactly the same over again, no matter how costly. <h3 style="text-align: center;">Dan Croll &#8211; How Close We Came</h3>
<p>Following on from the success of LP <em>Grand Plan</em> and EP <em>On Top</em> in recent years, Dan Croll has returned with brand new single, &#8216;How Close We Came&#8217;. A stripped back and compassionate song about the immediate aftermath of a long-term relationship, Croll&#8217;s packing his belongings into boxes, kissing the cat goodbye. But far from the traditional picture of regret and longing, the song captures the break-up from an angle seldom offered. One of bright fondness, an appreciation any of it happened at all. &#8220;After the initial heartbreak, it was something I felt quite proud of,&#8221; Croll explains. &#8220;We’d been through so much together and really grew into much better people, and [the song] was about that period of looking back with pride on such a profound experience.&#8221;</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Doom Flower &#8211; Telehealth</h3>
<p>After the release of the <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2021/12/09/doom-flower/">self-titled album</a> late in 2021, <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/doom-flower/">Doom Flower</a> are set to open 2023 with a brand new record, <em>Limestone Ritual</em>. Again released via <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/record-label/">&#8216;record label&#8217;</a>, the album sees Jess Price (<a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/campdogzz/">Campdogzz</a>), Bobby Burg (Joan of Arc, Make Believe, Love of Everything) and Matt Lemke (Wedding Dress) combine their sizeable experience into something new not out of necessity but the simple pleasure of creating. Latest single &#8216;Telehealth&#8217; gives a view into the spirit of the record. A hazy, laid back shuffle which simmers beneath Price&#8217;s vocals, the words emerging with an almost disinterested gloom, though within the murmured rhythm stirs something hypnotic.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Ian Davies &#8211; Stubborn</h3>
<p>Back in 2021 we wrote about <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2021/01/12/ian-davies-king-bedroom-country/"><em>The King of Bedroom Country</em></a> by <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/ian-davies/">Ian Davies</a>, an album which offered a sound &#8220;at once laid back and fatalistic&#8221;, capturing something of the classic country spirit in a more contemporary setting to convey how &#8220;no matter how painful or dispiriting, there’s some connection to be found within melancholy.&#8221; With new releases on the horizon, Davies has returned with a single &#8216;Stubborn&#8217;. It&#8217;s a track which delves into the overthinking mind and the illusions it is capable of conjuring, the easygoing seventies style juxtaposed against the torment of the narrator&#8217;s position, where various compulsions have obscured the truth of loss.</p>

<p>We&#8217;ve covered the work of Deniz Çiçek&#8217;s <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/krakow-loves-adana/">Kraków Loves Adana</a> several times in the past, each time struck by their ability to weave atmospheric dream pop soundscapes at once human and digital. &#8220;A space,&#8221; as we described in a review of 2021&#8217;s <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/2021/09/08/krakow-loves-adana-follow-the-voice/"><em>Follow the Voice</em></a>, &#8220;in which the boundaries between physical reality, virtual reality and dreams began to merge and blur.&#8221; Ahead of new record <em>Oceanflower</em> out early next year, Kraków Loves Adana has teamed up with <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/ruth-radelet/">Ruth Radelet</a> and Adam Miller of dream pop icons The Chromatics for new single, &#8216;When the Storm Comes&#8217;. <h3 style="text-align: center;">Steven van Betten &#8211; I Didn&#8217;t Mean To Do That</h3>
<p><a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/los-angeles/">Los Angeles</a>-based Steven van Betten is gearing up to release his first solo record <em>Friends and Family</em> sometime in 2023 via <a href="https://varioussmallflames.co.uk/tag/future-gods/">Future Gods</a>, and new single &#8216;I didn&#8217;t Mean To Do That&#8217; serves as an introduction as to what to expect. It&#8217;s a gentle, warm song which explores mistakes in all of their guises. &#8220;Some mistakes (though painful at the time) can age quite well,&#8221; van Betten explains. &#8220;They become funny, entertaining, and even cherished memories; parables of personal growth shared openly with friends around the dinner table.&#8221; But of course there&#8217;s kind of mistake too. &#8220;The kind that hurt those we love most—can haunt us.&#8221; &#8216;I Didn&#8217;t Mean To Do That&#8217; takes stock of both, recognising mistakes as a fundamentally human experience, and using this fact as a path toward forgiveness and compassion.</p>
