Back in February, we wrote of bedbug‘s return with pack your bags the sun is growing, a new album which built upon foundations set on 2022’s self-titled EP by the project’s new full-band line-up. “This change of direction [pushes] the project closer to Cap’n Jazz than the hushed aesthetic from which they originated,” we described. “A style which only furthers [lead Dylan] Citron’s ability to weave the personal and the political into a seamless whole.” Single ‘postcard’ highlighted how the intimacy and intention of Citron’s writing not only persists but thrives within this new sonic environment, as though only now are they coming to possess the necessary tools to realise their ambitions. “While any project inevitably passes through various life stages as time goes on,” as we continued, “you get the sense Citron and co. are rising towards their fullest potential. The first bedbug to ever sprout wings.”

We took the opportunity to speak with Citron about the album, touching on the pros and cons of studio recording, the changing face of bedroom pop, the subtlety of the best political songs and the balance between escapism and engagement.

Hello thanks for speaking with us! Congratulations on the release of pack your bags the sun is growing. How does it feel to have a new record out in the world?

Now that we’re a little over a month out from the release, it feels pretty awesome. For the first time in a while, I don’t have anything musical lined up. No shows, recordings to mix. I have some songs I’ve been working on at a snail’s pace, but that’s my norm. I feel… lighter.

pack your bags the sun is growing by bedbug

You previously described your last few releases (starting with if got smaller grew wings and flew away for good and ending with life like moving pictures) as a book, with common themes and direction. What differences does this new period of bedbug bring? How have you changed as a songwriter since then?

I think in a way, I always fall back on some of my old habits. Beyond that, before I even start writing a song, I think about where it will be in the context of a record. If I write a softer sounding guitar part, could it be attached to a louder guitar part I’ve already written in order to add some dynamism? Should it be standalone? It’s probably a silly way to write music, but I’ve always had a lot more fun putting those puzzle pieces together than writing a catchy single. So it’s a little inescapable. As for how that’s changed, I think it’s become more of a science. I’m more comfortable with the process, which has let me create songs that feel more complex. Pushing that even further is probably what I’m most excited about going forward.

i’ll count to heaven in years without seasons by bedbug

When writing about your previous record, we talked about how even at its most personal, your music implicitly carries an empathy and political weight. As we put it: “It recognises that anything truly personal written in the age of late capitalism kinda has to be.” Do you set out with the intention of exploring these wider themes, or does it occur naturally within the process of writing more personally?

I think if anything I try to tone down how explicitly I explore political themes. Sometimes they just don’t fit the vision of the song. That’s not to say I avoid political themes, but I think there’s a level of artistry that is difficult to balance when incorporating politics into a song. Union songs have their place. Everyone knows modern trap/hip-hop is extremely political. But when I do it, it feels hamfisted. I think a lot about the Advance Base song ‘Trisha Please Come Home’ when I think about incorporating politics into songwriting. The overall song is about someone watching a friend who moves town without warning. In the song, the narrator hypothesizes the frustrations their friend was having that could’ve led to the move. They talk about friends making stupid jokes, the landlord raising the rent, and quitting her job because too many customers at the restaurant were hitting on her. These are political lyrics! But they’re also very human, they fit the genre and add to the songwriting rather than feeling like a jarring tangent. And sometimes a jarring tangent can be more powerful! It’s all about intent. When I write, I try to keep all of this in mind.

life like moving pictures by bedbug

There’s an apocalyptic backdrop to the new record. The sense of some drastic thing unfolding just outside the frame of the songs which occasionally reveals itself as a striking image (there are tsunamis, tornados, roaming spirits, the world is ending in the opening track). But it’s not exactly a speculative concept album either, because often such phenomena feel secondary to the immediate emotional thread of the track. Could you talk a little about this side of the album?

I’m glad you picked up on that! There’s a few answers to this question. The first is that I really wanted to create self contained stories that felt fantastical. That type of escapism gave me more room to write different types of stories! The second is political. Our world is pretty unpredictable and chaotic. For many, like those in Palestine, there is never any security from that chaos. Or how the blockade in Cuba prevents many goods beyond the bare necessities from entering the country. Or at the schools I’ve worked at, how unstable and challenging life is for so many families. I think there’s a very human beauty that in such a chaotic world, things like heartbreak, sentimentality, hope and loneliness are not only universal, but often more powerful than whatever apocalyptic scenario is being thrown at us. So I tried to explore all of that, in a sense.

bedbug is a full-band project now, which is a pretty big change from your early days. What’s the biggest difference in working this way? Has this transformation from a solo project of synths, loop pedals etc to a bona fide indie rock band altered your songwriting process at all?

Honestly, not much has changed except I’ve given up some control over the individual puzzle pieces of songs. For example, it was really cool to see how songs like ‘leave your things…’ and ‘the great bonfire’ changed with the introduction of drums. “Leave your things…” in particular is a song that could’ve only been written for a full band. The biggest change is that when I write the foundation of a song (on guitar), I try to leave more space for drums or a second guitar. Not the most interesting answer, but it’s been true enough!

pack your bags the sun is growing by bedbug

The new album is also your first recorded in a studio–how did you find this process and what difference did it make to the final result?

I feel two ways about it. First, it was incredible working with Nick Dussault at Big Nice in Rhode Island. A really incredible studio, comfortable and Nick is super talented. The recording days themselves went very smoothly. That being said, I’m not used to having that kind of timeline. When I record, I take probably a full dozen guitar and vocal takes on each song. After that, I start mixing, wait a few days to see how I feel about the track, and then re-record parts as needed. Then repeat for each song until I feel like they’re done. It’s a bit obsessive, and impossible to recreate in a studio because of basic time limitations. So I’m not sure about my plans for the next record (nor do I really have any finished songs yet) but I think a combination of home and studio recording might be best.

Finally (and kinda related to the previous couple of Qs), I have to ask about genre and the term “bedroom pop”. You were very much a pioneer of the genre and played a big part in its popularity. Do you feel you have left that tag behind? Or is what you’re doing now the next step in its evolution?

It’s hard to say. I do still love bedroom pop. But I think I mostly like music that feels authentic to me. When you listen to some of the early indie rock pioneers from the 90’s, they sound so lackadaisical and effortless, it lets the heart shine through. Bedroom pop was the same way! I think it’s a bit of a rebellious response to the clean, heavily processed production styles of music that sound expensive when they hit your eardrum. I think that bands who embrace their scrappiness have a longer shelf life. So in a sense, I’ll never leave that behind, since I have no intentions of changing my process and replacing little musical blemishes with perfection. On the other hand, after three albums of acoustic music recorded to cassette, I needed to let myself grow to keep things interesting for me. Realistically, my evolution will probably be to incorporate elements of bedroom pop as I introduce new elements as well. Or maybe I’ll just pick up a new hobby, like painting.

“Has it been a year or two? Will it be cotton or leather?” asks Abigail Lapell in new single ‘Anniversary Song’. “Mercury and iron, carbon, silver / bind us together.” Taken from the Toronto singer-songwriter’s forthcoming album Anniversary on Outside Music, the song encapsulates the marriage of symbolism and tangibility used across the record. Romantic chemistry as both otherworldly magic and physical reaction. Not that the love on the album is merely of the romantic sort, with a series of personal milestones prompting Lapell to contemplate the phenomenon in all its guises, offering a picture of relationships and commitment with all the complexities left intact.

Agent blå – Rain To You

Last month we wrote about ‘Discount’, the lead single from the upcoming album Stab! by Gothenburg‘s Agent blå on VÅRØ Records (Sweden) and Kanine Records (US). What we described as a song “simmering with eerie menace and charged with forward motion, splitting the difference between familiarity and strangeness.” With the album coming later this spring, Agent blå have returned with second single ‘Rain To You’ to build upon these beginnings. Squally and loaded with momentum, it looks to small details as sources of comfort within an otherwise overwhelming world, and submits itself fully to forces large and mysterious.

Never spoke it with a sober mouth
I’m drawn to the chaos, my sanity grown shy
Keep clinging to no time
You’re the moon to me
I was rain to you

Al Harper – Plaster of Paris

Later this month, San Francisco-based songwriter Al Harper will release album The Analemma Observation League via Take a Turn Records. An album which draws upon the solar phenomenon of its title to explore themes of change and growth. Analemma refers to the figure of eight plot made if one was to chart the sun’s position in the sky from the same position at the same time of day across an entire year, rendering what might otherwise seem a linear process into an infinite loop. Working in such a spirit, Al Harper draws on a variety of memories and experiences to offer the past not as some line trailing ever further into the distance, but rather something forever orbiting around us. Lessons to learn from, patterns to take comfort in. The suitably sunny sound of latest single ‘Plaster of Paris’ is the perfect introduction, and comes complete with a video shot by Harper and Craig Barclift and edited by Simon Linsteadt:

bedbug – postcard

We’ve long followed the work of bedbug, charting how Dylan Gamez Citron has taken the project through a trilogy of acclaimed bedroom pop albums before metamorphosing into a full band for a self-titled EP in 2022. This year sees bedbug return with pack your bags the sun is growing, a full-length album which builds more fully upon this change of direction to push the project closer to Cap’n Jazz than the hushed aesthetic from which they originated. A style which only furthers Citron’s ability to weave the personal and the political into a seamless whole. Vitally none of the heart or intimacy is lost in this transformation, as single ‘postcard’ attests, and while any project inevitably passes through various life stages as time goes on, you get the sense Citron and co. are rising towards their fullest potential. The first bedbug to ever sprout wings.

pack your bags the sun is growing by bedbug
pack your bags the sun is growing releases on 15th March.
Dead Slow Hoot – Take It Or Leave It

Specialising in a style of atmospheric alt-rock that’s at once melancholy and anthemic, Sheffield/London outfit Dead Slow Hoot draw on a variety of genres to create something unique. Previous releases have drawn on poetic folk, shadowy post-punk and epic post-rock, sometimes within the same song, and new single ‘Take It Or Leave It’ is no different. Opening with just pared-back guitar and banjo, it eventually builds to a dramatic crescendo of wailing guitar and crashing percussion, straddling the line between an intimate acoustic ballad and a monumental rock song. The song is about “making necessary compromises for the good of your partner and growing together through that,” the band explain, “[and also] a more general realism, accepting the ‘competing intentions’ that you might have with another person… and actively engaging with them to make something better.”

We’ve featured Durham, North Carolina-based songwriter Emma Geiger several times over the last year or so. First with 2022 EP Haven, and then with several stellar singles. Excitingly, Geiger is now putting the finishing touches to her debut full-length, Reverse Bloom, which features those singles alongside four brand new tracks. To further whet anticipation, she has released the title track, a song which moves its focus away from romantic relationships towards the difficult loss of a friendship. Someone Geiger was formerly close to wrote a song detailing the dissolution of their friendship, and this is an exploration of the following emotions. “When I first heard it, I felt her anger, frustration and bitterness,” she describes. “That friendship meant a lot to me, and losing it really shook me. It brought up a lot of questions about who I am, and who I was in that relationship.” Watch the video filmed by Archer Boyette and directed by Boyette and Geiger herself below:

Reverse Bloom is out on 26th April. ‘Reverse Bloom’ the single is available now via the Emma Geiger Bandcamp page.

Eyesore & The Jinx – Float Like a Jellyfish (Sting Like a Subtweet)

“[A song which presents] the gym as the encapsulation of the country,” we wrote of Eyesore & The Jinx‘s ‘Nocturnal Athletes (Ode To Bruno)’ by back in September when previewing their debut album, Jitterbug, “where an assortment of lonely and overworked people run without going anywhere, lift with no purpose beyond some abstract penance, and stare at screens playing Top 40 videos on a loop.” With the record’s release fast approaching, the Liverpool-based outfit have shared final single ‘Float Like a Jellyfish (Sting Like a Subtweet)’, and fans will be reassured to learn it is every bit as twitchy and cutting as we’ve come to expect. Light-hearted, mischievous and a little hyperactive, winding taut with anxious energy to evoke a decidedly contemporary unease.

Jordan Whitlock & Memory Spells – Take My Hand

Memory Spells is the new project of songwriter Matt Bauer which takes the orchestral indie folk he puts out under his own name further towards “his love of contemporary TV, film and video game scores, cinematic post rock, early post punk, and 80s film music.” His latest collaboration is with San Diego songwriter and producer Jordan Whitlock, whose intimate writing and impressive soulful vocals have been wining fans all over. Suffused with the lush, shadowy grandeur of Lynch at his most romantic, latest single ‘Take My Hand’ is what the duo describe as “Emmylou Harris meets Cigarettes after Sex,” not only offering a new dimension to Bauer’s work but opening up a whole world of its own.

The Lostines – Full Moon Night

The recording project of New Orleans-based songwriters Casey Jane Reece-Kaigler and Camille Wind Weatherford, The Lostines are preparing to release their debut full-length Meet The Lostines this spring on Gar Hole Records. The album draws plenty from the Louisiana landscape, but ultimately conjures a world of its own. One in which time and space has gone a little strange, and a whole host of periods and places layer atop of one another to form something larger than the sum of its parts. Lead single ‘Full Moon Night’ typifies the result, where retro folk harmonies and spectral synths bring to life a languid longing for a love now past.

It’s with no exaggeration we describe Owen Ashworth as one of the most consistent and important songwriters in contemporary indie music. From the earliest Casiotone For the Painfully Alone demos to most recent Advance Base single ‘Little Sable Point Lighthouse‘, Owen has crafted a catalogue of characters and circumstances with few rivals in the modern era. His is an ever evolving body of work which stands out in its deftness and humility and empathy and care, bringing to life individuals from across the spectrum of human experience while remaining unerringly attuned to the tender, fallible heart at the centre of each.

Released to coincide with his birthday, and organised by Dan Wriggins (of Friendship) in collaboration with Dear Life Records, You Were Alone: An Owen Ashworth Almanac is a covers compilation featuring versions of Owen’s songs from family, friends, labelmates and fans. A celebration which recognises a birthday but also so much more than that. A body of work and the burgeoning legacy it has and continues to establish, not to mention the blossoming community fostered through Owen’s label Orindal Records.

And community feels like the right word for the compilation. Both in terms of the gathered artists and the characters they bring to life. Because hearing the songs in different voices really brings home the diversity of personalities present across Owen’s work. Pedro the Lion adds a weariness to ‘My Sister’s Birthday’ with his distinctively gruff fondness. Claire Cronin is the perfect person to fully excavate the spookiness of ‘Pamela’. MJ Lenderman and Karly Hartzman raise a glass to poor old Christmas Steve. Sinai Vessel captures ‘Kitty Winn’ in all its sad affection.

Some, like Lisa/Liza‘s ‘Rabbits’ or Karima Walker‘s ‘Same Dream’, take the original versions back to the traditional folk roots, while the likes of Ylayali, Moon Racer and Bedbug lean into the electronic, harking back to earlier CFTPA days. What’s impressive is how the distinctive “Ashworthian” voice remains across the spectrum. Even the tracks with no literal voice, be it Robert Stillman‘s take on ‘Christmas in Nightmare City’ or Gordon Ashworth‘s extended guitar version of ‘Nephew in the Wild’, lose none of their ability to evoke the tales we’ve grown to hold so dear. Because while Dan might have intended to organise a birthday party, it turned out more like a reunion. A gathering of Owen’s characters, our friends. Still here, still living, still with so many stories to tell.

Bad Tiger – Clear Vision

After a hiatus from music, Yasi Lowy moved to San Francisco in 2018 and returned as Bad Tiger. Released in 2020, album The Goat and the Bad Tiger was the first product of this new period, but far from being the full realisation of Lowy’s goals, it merely opened the doors to new possibilities. With new ideas in hand, Bad Tiger worked with Mackenzie Bunch at Coyote Hearing Studio on a new EP, Sanctuary. ‘Clear Vision’ is our first taste of the release, a bedroom pop track stretched taut with strength of feeling. A track which holds paradoxes in its palm with a sense of curiosity. “I know what I want so long as it’s gone,” Lowy sings, “so long as it’s out of sight, I’ve got clear vision.”

bedbug – songs about ghosts

When bedbug released their last full-length, life like moving pictures, back in 2020, it was something of a conclusion. The final part of a trilogy of albums that began with on 2016’s if i got smaller grew wings and flew away for good, it marked the end of a significant stage of the project’s life. It served “not only as a conclusion,” we wrote in a review, “but a summation of what bedbug has come to mean over the previous few years.” So the natural question was, what comes next?

After a little wait, the answer is now revealed. bedbug has evolved Pokémon-style into a full band and announced a self-titled EP, to be released in March on the inimitable Disposable America. To display this new direction, bedbug have unveiled the EP’s lead single, a reimagining of ‘songs about ghosts’, which initially featured on if i got smaller…. Check it out below:

bedbug by bedbug
bedbug releases on 18th March via Disposable America. Pre-order it now from Bandcamp.

Big Nothing – A Lot of Finding Out

Philly-based outfit Big Nothing are set to release their second record Dog Hours this coming February. Their first on Lame-O Records, the album captures the buoyant blend of compassion and confidence that makes Big Nothing so compelling. Equal parts intimate alt-country and bold power pop, as highlighted by lead single ‘A Lot of Finding Out’ with its acoustic guitars and elastic bounce.

Dog Hours by Big Nothing
Dog Hours is out via Lame-O Records on the 18th February and you can pre-order it from the Big Nothing Bandcamp page.

Julia Blair – Waste Away

Making her name fronting Wisconsin country rock outfit Dusk, whose 2018 self-titled record on Don Giovanni Records won wide acclaim, Julia Blair has gone solo for brand new album Better Out Than In on Crutch of Memory. After the bright and fierce nineties-inflected pop rock of lead single ‘Relax’, new song ‘Waste Away’ shows off another side to Blair’s work. A considered meditation on the dissolution of a relationship wrapped within a rich arrangement of strings. The track comes complete with a video directed by Finn Bjornerud, with choreography by Monica Endres.

Better Out Than In is out via Crutch Of Memory and you can pre-order it from the Julia Blair Bandcamp page.

Bryde – Silver Suns

Hailing from Pembrokeshire and now based in London, Bryde has won acclaim with an emotive and cathartic brand of indie rock. Following on from 2020’s The Volume of Things, Bryde is opening 2022 with the first taste of a brand new record. With its tenderhearted piano foundations, ‘Silver Suns’ explores the diversity of love, pushing beyond the stereotypical images to delve into ideas of self-acceptance and non-judgemental affection.

Silver Suns (divine) by Bryde
‘Silver Suns’ is out now, and the new Bryde album will be released later this year on Easy Life Records (UK) and Ferryhouse (Germany).

Georgia Harmer – Austin

Following on from first single, ‘Headrush‘, Toronto‘s Georgia Harmer returns with new track, ‘Austin’, on Arts & Crafts. Building on the rich and nostalgic sound of the first song, ‘Austin’ tackles homesickness and familial love with a special focus on Harmer’s father and his experiences as a touring musician. Indeed, Harmer Snr. plays lead guitar on the track, recorded in the family living room. A tangible link to the connection which sparked the song in the first place. “Went to Austin Texas for a day / To everyone I saw I said your name,” she sings in the opening line. “The setting sun the hot wind on my face / Felt like home an unfamiliar place.”

We were cowboys in another life
But I am you your other life is mine
Often when I speak to you I cry
Never can explain the reason why

KASHKA – isolation

Last winter saw the return of Toronto-based dream pop project KASHKA with latest release, soft. Part of Kat Burns‘s ever-evolving style, the record lived up to its title with its gentle and welcoming sound, providing a nook in which the listener can sit and contemplate the current moment. Single ‘isolation’ captures this mood through the muted beauty of a snow day, looking for common humanity within the experience of being cut off from the world.

Lofi Legs – My Silence

Combining garage rock and bedroom pop with psych and surf sensibilities, San Francisco‘s Lofi Legs are out to capture the highs and lows of life. Ahead of their album Leg Day on Italian-American label We Were Never Being Boring Collective, they have unveiled lead single ‘my silence’ to welcome us into this style. A song smack back in the middle of a Venn diagram between poignant and playful. “‘My Silence’ started as a conversation on shrooms about how I had gotten quieter,” explains Paris Cox-Farr, “and in the song I am picking apart my silent vulnerability to see if there’s something happening inside.”

Night Shop – Let Me Let It Go

Next month sees the release of Forever Night, the full-length album from LA‘s Night Shop on Dangerbird Records. To add to the anticipation for what we’ve described previously as a “triumphant meditation on nocturnal life,” Justin Sullivan has unveiled a brand new single, ‘Le Me Let It Go’. With a band featuring Meg Duffy (Hand Habits), Will Ivy (Flatworms) and Anna St. Louis, as well as engineering from Jarvis Taveniere (Woods), the song finds a bona fide supergroup at the height of their chemistry. Check out the video by Jeff Davenport and Cooper Kenward below:

I was halfway through my time on this earth. When I had a strange feeling like I had at my birth. Surrounded by strangers, crying in some room. I felt myself at such a remove. And I loved them all but I couldn’t say how, I just screamed a lot and then I shut my mouth.

Quiet Hollers – Garden of Love

Louisville outfit Quiet Hollers returned this January with Forever Chemicals, what they describe as their “joyfully nihilistic” fourth record. True to their genre-bending spirit, the album draws from all facets of the rock style to create a sound at once mischievous and sincere, leaning toward the darker end of the spectrum without sacrificing the steely will beneath the gloom. Single ‘Garden of Love’ is and example of the record’s earnest side, a yearning track fired by propulsive drums and lifted by the evocative delivery of lead Shadwick Wilde.

Rascal Miles – Locusts

We’ve previously described Rascal Miles‘s Tailor-Made as an examination of “both the violence and banal practicalities of becoming the person you are meant to be,” and latest single ‘Locusts’ is no different. Taking inspiration from Ennio Morricone and the world of Spaghetti Westerns, the track confronts post gender transition dysphoria and the hostility of the world with a sense of defiance. “I am who I am, and sometimes it seems like the whole world is out to get me, but even if we’re marching into an outnumbered battle in our fight for acceptance, we’re stepping out of the shadows and into the light,” Miles explains. “No more hiding. No backing down. Bring on the locusts.”

Lee Switzer-Woolf – The Negative Twin

Having been a part of bands like Launch Control and The Seasons in Shorthand, 2022 sees Reading-based artist Lee Switzer-Woolf step out on his own with debut single, ‘The Negative Twin’. Taken from full-length Scientific Automatic Palmistry, out by All Will Be Well Records this February, the song introduces the darkly ruminative tone of Switzer-Woolf’s sound. A sparse and haunting track which nevertheless carries a stark urgency beneath its inky surface. Like an undercurrent pulling toward some unfortunate conclusion.

The Negative Twin by Lee Switzer-Woolf
Scientific Automatic Palmistry is out on the 7th February via All Will Be Well Records.

Erisy Watt – New Same

This spring sees the release of Eyes like the Ocean, a new record from Portland’s Erisy Watt on American Standard Time Records. Lead single ‘New Same’ welcomes us into the world of the record, one as indebted to contemporaries like Haley Heynderickx as the sixties stars of the genre. “I was reflecting on habits, trying to break the old and shape the new, and I was feeling stuck,” Watt explains. “We all want to blossom into the best versions of ourselves and often forget that it takes time, that it’s never a linear path. Old voices linger. Old behaviours crop up.” ‘New Same’ is a recognition of this fact, learning to adapt one’s outlook as the landscape shifts below.

Eyes like the Ocean by Erisy Watt
Eyes like the Ocean is out via American Standard Time Records on the 1st April and you can pre-order it now from Bandcamp.

Anna Westin – Bright Burning Mess

‘Bright Burning Mess’ finds Canadian poet and songwriter Anna Westin working at the intersection of her various artistic outlets. With both spoken word and sung lyrics populating the lushly ethereal folk arrangement, the track slots in alongside those contemporaries like Cassandra Jenkins. Songs looking to push the possibilities of language within the indie folk movement, and elevate the emotions found within.

Kimberly Morgan York – Real Thing

Though it was recorded way back in 2006, only to be released in 2022, Kimberly Morgan York’s debut LP Found Yourself a Lady transports you far further back than that. Recorded with The Everlovin’ Band and featuring Brad Morgan of the Drive-By Truckers, Found Yourself a Lady is a country record in the classic sense. A collection of songs occupying a timeless space of love and loss, as demonstrated by single ‘Real Thing’. A romance so fierce it could never burn for long, but oh how warm it is in the moment.

She’ll forgive you and I won’t wait

rose, water, fountain is a new collaborative side project of bedbug (who we have written about numerous times, most recently last year’s album life like moving pictures) and Puppy Problems (who released a great album Sunday Feeling a few years back on Sleeper Records).

If you’re at all familiar with either project, you’ll have a good idea of what to expect from rose, water, fountain. We once said bedbug’s music “exists in a kind of wistful flux, like that feeling of watching the seasons change from a quiet window,” and the description stands pretty well for this EP too. The songs draw on bedroom pop and (more subtly) emo and mid-90s era Modest Mouse to fashion something nostalgic and yearning, a feeling summed up perfectly by a line in closing track ‘infinite (out of time)’—”and I love feeling lonely for you.”

There’s a notable sense of cohesion across the release, despite the fact this is a side project and the result of two artists coming together and sharing the writing process. Each song possess the same lo-fi percussion, the same earnest vocals. But it’s more than that, something intangible and near-abstract, a spirit or ethos that unites bedbug and Puppy Problems and makes their collaboration special.

But that’s not to say every song sounds the same. Some, like ‘the last generation to go to hell’ gather in momentum (and volume), while others remain mellow throughout. Take for example opener ‘regular blue’, which sounds like taking a stroll in the evening golden hour, full of quiet gladness and hope for the future. “after all this time,” goes its final line, “something good coming down the line,” and somehow it feels like it really is.

For all its railing against conventions, its apparent embrace of the misfits and the ignored, indie music is often strangely apolitical. We might say the right things but there is so much work to do on race, on gender, on class. There is space for so much more engagement with these issues, the possibility for so much greater community and organisation. Bedroom pop could be seen as especially guilty, so caught up in its own lonely woes and memories of the past. But all it takes is someone to join the dots. To take the time to understand what sadness means and where it comes from. Which is to say, the political bedroom pop artist need not discard the genre, just engage with it more deeply, perhaps even over years, to unearth the radical power within.

We’ve followed the career of Dylan Citron since 2014, following the Boston-based songwriter as they explored and developed their sound. Settling on the moniker bedbug, Citron released debut buzzing like a bug in the snow in 2016, an album which laid the foundations for the blend of pop, emo, lo-fi and experimental music that would come to mark their output. Later that year saw the release of if i got smaller grew wings and flew away for good on Z Tapes, a record which ushered in a new era in Citron’s creativity. The album was “very much of our times,” we wrote, “a chronicle of lonely young people comprising of honest, intimate thoughts, wistful, nostalgic instrumentation and the ever-pervasive interjections of pop culture.” Field recordings and samples interspersed the gentle, emo-inflected sincerity of the songs like “ghosts floating through the matrix of our digital world,” and various electronics and effects only added to this effect.

The style continued across 2018’s i’ll count to heaven in years without seasons, released by Run For Cover imprint Joy Void, with Citron not only developing the aesthetic but also the scope and possibilities of its use. The nostalgia and innocence of the genre was present, but a certain weight began to gather behind it, a sense of purpose and vision that surpassed that of so many other acts. As though Citron examined thoughts and feelings a little deeper. Refused to write off wistfulness and melancholy as a vestigial adolescent charm. What if the past is so alluring because it promised something that never came to pass? What if a better future is possible?

Last month saw the release of a brand new full-length, life like moving pictures, and the effect is even more apparent. Again released by Joy Void, the album is described as the last chapter of a book that started with if i got smaller…, serving not only as a conclusion but a summation of what bedbug has come to mean over the previous few years, and the clearest communication yet as to what it stands for. A vehicle for forces both personal and political, a project that understands there is no distinction between the two.

The whole thing exists in a kind of wistful flux, like that feeling of watching the seasons change from a quiet window. From the tender slo-mo emo of opener ‘summer mixtape’ to the ramshackle folky vibes of ‘birds nest’, bedbug builds unassuming but heartfelt monuments to a present that has one eye on the future and another on the past. The songs are always gentle, always fluid and pliable, probing hopes and thoughts and experiences with a diarist’s candor and a poet’s heart. And even at their most personal, bedbug radiates a sense of empathy that glows like the “new type of beauty called game boy lights hidden under pillows” that they mention on ‘love & everything after.’ A concern for not just their own feelings but everyone else’s.

Which brings us back to the original point. Because although life like moving pictures is not necessarily a “political” record, it recognises that anything truly personal written in the age of late capitalism kinda has to be. Such themes usually remain implicit (the audio samples on ‘autumn mixtape’ and ‘winter mixtape’ being obvious exceptions), but they are ingrained in the images of unseasonable snow and PepsiCo and careless landlords and the endless dreams of a simpler life in nature.

Long Island Ladies is a DIY booking agency run by Mary Stankard and Eric Flores working in (you guessed it) Long Island. They put on shows that allow kids from Long Island to see some great bands and have fun in a safe environment, right on their doorsteps. But, not content with putting on shows, Long Island Ladies have also branched out into compilation curation. Long Island Ladies #1 collects 22 covers of songs by the various projects of Allison and Katie Crutchfield, (i.e. Waxahatchee, P.S. Eliot and Swearin’).

What this translates as is a really nice collection of lo-fi DIY pop songs. Stand-outs include Libbie 2000’s ‘sister saint’ cover, which introduces some crunchy guitar to smooth bedroom pop, and ‘be good’ by thanks for coming, which brings to mind Long Neck.

There are also appearances from WTD fav Tall Friend, who covers Waxahatchee’s ‘Brother Bryan’, bedbug, who provide a take on ‘Troubled Medium’ by P.S. Eliot, and Deer Scout who covers ‘clumsy’ in her usual delicate style.

All 22 tracks are great, so why not make a small donation and check them all out? You’ll probably find your new favourite band in the process. Proceeds of the project will be split between between two great causes: the Standing Rock Sioux of North and South Dakota to help with their protest against the Dakota access pipeline, and the council of American-Islamic relations’ New York chapter, which has a particularly important role given recent political developments.

You can get Long Island Ladies #1 as a name-your-price download from their Bandcamp page. Remember all donations go to great causes! They have also teamed up with our prolific pals at Z Tapes to give the compilation a physical release. Head to the Z Tapes Bandcamp page to order one!

P.S. For more politically motivated music, check out our post to support the Women’s March, and last week’s generous donation from Bandcamp and a whole host of kind artists (many of whom’s individual donations are still ongoing).

At the end of each year we like to collect our favourite ‘name your price’ music on Bandcamp (or free ones elsewhere). 2016 was another year chock full of great, financially flexible releases, so over the next week or so we’ll be sharing the list in alphabetically arranged segments.

Much has been said recently about how political turmoil and social instability will provide fertile conditions for great art, and whether or not you subscribe to this idea, we’re pretty sure that paying artists makes for even better soil in which to sow creative seeds. The title to this post says ‘free’ music because it’s snappier than ‘name your price’ music, but really that’s a convenient/attention-grabbing misnomer. Bandcamp provides pretty much the most direct way for us to connect directly with musicians and support their work from all over the world, so why don’t we utilise this tool and ensure that art perseveres in the face of everything else that’s going on?

Anyhow, here’s the first segment of the list, covering artists beginning with A – D. We don’t pretend to be in any way comprehensive, so let us know if we missed your favourite and maybe we’ll add it to the list.Albosel – Container
Below are sixty of the tracks that stood out alongside our pick of the best lines and lyrics.
