Flash Review: teen love – be kind to me

A while back we featured a couple of songs from teen love (the bedroom pop project of Justin Burns), when he released odes to Audrey Horne and Dana Scully. Now teen love is back with an album called be kind to me, which Burns recorded in his bedroom/bathroom through the summer. What we get is eight cool lo-fi bedroom pop songs, some dreamy and hazy, others kind of rocky and messy (in a good way), all backed up with Burns’s deadpan vocals. Highlights include ‘bedroom blues’, with its underwater lo-fi ambient vibe almost reminiscent of the Twin Peaks theme, ‘how are ya’, in which muted electric guitars carve away at big smashing percussion, and ‘you are so cool’, which has these stormy squally guitars which whip around the vocals like ragged flags in a gale. In short it’s all pretty cool!

You should also probably know that I’m kind of late to the party on this, so much so that this project has been killed by it’s owner. Luckily for all of us, Burns has already started another project, named Happy To See You, which you can check out on Soundcloud.

Teen Love – tv luv

I say it all the time but surfing around Bandcamp really is a fun way to waste an hour (or five). I recently found a band called Teen Love from Orlando in Florida, who have recently put out a release called tv luv which declare an undying love for two of television’s finest ladies. ‘Audrey Horne’ is a dreamy lo-fi rock ode to the most glamourous and sophisticated girl in that shadowy town of Twin Peaks.

We also get an acoustic version of the track, as well as a similar take on a song called ‘Scully’, which you don’t need me to tell you is about everyone’s favourite sceptical FBI agent. By the way, the band have a full-length album in the works called Be Kind To Me, which is due for release in September. You can listen to two songs right now, including ‘wait for you’, a cool slice of lolling bedroom pop that opens with a quote from Heathers, “If you were happy all the time then you wouldn’t be a human being, you’d be a gameshow host”.
