It’s that time of year again, time to think about our favourite songs of 2016. Below are sixty of the tracks that stood out alongside our pick of the best lines and lyrics. It gets a bit (extremely) long, so feel free to scroll to the bottom where we’ve collected the tracks into a handy 8tracks playlist. Or perhaps read the entire thing as some experimental poem.

And the usual disclaimer applies, there were too many great tunes to include them all, so treat this more as a selection rather than a comprehensive round-up of the year. Enjoy.

A while back we told you that Todd Goldstein’s Arms were readying a new album, Patterns. The album is now upon us (it has been for a while, because we’re behind the curve as always) and proves to be what is perhaps Arms’ most interesting release to date. As the title suggests, Patterns deals with patterns of all kinds, something Goldstein explained in an interview with Gimme Tinnitus: “The title refers to behavioral patterns, patterns in nature, patterns in pop music; the songs are about acknowledging those things, finding the fragile humanity and humor in those idiosyncratic, quasi-universal truths”.

Patterns sees the band (Goldstein plus drummer Tlacael Esparza) explore a big stylistic range, mining depths that Arms have never been to before. Its triumph lies in how all of these elements are brought together. As the blurb describes, it “lassoes every last one of ARMS’ sprawling stylistic and emotional tendencies and channels them into a handsome, wild-eyed suite of guitar pop. Patterns is a love letter to letting go”.

Opener ‘Laughing Academy’ is jaunty indie pop, complete with a feel-good guitar solo and held together by Goldstein’s signature vocals, while lead single ‘Keep It Light’ sounds like the Arms we know and love amped up a few notches, revealing a band that could write bona fide smash hit pop songs if they were willing to part with the wiry indie rock bedrock of their sound. Luckily for us, they haven’t done that just yet, a fact confirmed by the song’s pounding finale.

‘Stellary’ slows things down a touch, swaying smoothly to and fro as Goldstein’s vocals snake around the central kick drum, hitting the high notes during the chorus in an almost R&B style falsetto. This lull in tempo remains on ‘Goodbye to All That’, Goldstein’s vocals again leading things, smouldering amidst the lush instrumentation.

Things get acoustic on the somewhat paradoxically titled ‘Wall of Sound’, a track that shows that Arms don’t require indie rock bombast to make an effective tune, while the instrumental interlude ‘Red Rover’ sounds like that feeling of watching a sleeping city at night. This dreamy reflection is punctured by ‘All 4s’, where Esparza attacks his drum kit with gusto as the guitars swell and lift around Goldstein’s familiarly off-beat lyricism:

“There’s a restless energy
it lurks behind your eyes
dormant like a gene
it will express itself in time”

Goldstein gets to fully air his croon on ‘Turnstiles’, with its slow thwacking drum beat and reverb of piano, again suggesting the band could achieve stardom if they were willing to swap out the eclectic stylistic range and odd, intriguing lyrics. Luckily for us they have bigger ambitions than radio air-time, enabling them to pursue strange, striking tracks such as ‘Missing’. “I don’t want to force your hand,” Goldstein sings. “The witches disguised as plans will never do / Like the king of death bed regrets / and the queen of last requests could ever choose”. The song pushes forwards with insistent energy, the constant percussion and Goldstein’s free-flowing delivery conjuring meaning out of the most cryptic of sentences, demanding you make sense of the peculiar verses, before culminating in a finale of sparkling noise.

This grand finish is rounded off by the otherworldly ‘Sticks and Stones’, the track feeling like an epilogue with its tidal synths. These electronics flood over Goldstein’s vocals and the background harmonies, ebbing and flowing and pulsing outwards with an almost astral air, growing more strange as the song shimmers toward a close and proving the value of experimentalism and atypical art.

On Patterns, Arms prove they have it all, they can do big and catchy, smooth and heartfelt, raucous and a little bit weird. If you want an album to make you dance and sit still and think, then you’d be hard pressed to find a better example than Patterns. Grab your copy now from the Paper Garden Records online store or the Arms Bandcamp page.

We’re big fans of Todd Goldstein’s Arms project here at WTD. Not only have we covered several of his releases, we were lucky enough to have him record a cover of Magnetic Fields’ ‘The Book of Love’ for our Quiet, Constant Friends compilation last year. It’s no surprise then that we are rather excited about Patterns, a new album from the former Harlem Shakes man that’s coming out this spring on Paper Garden Records.

Patterns is apparently a “love letter to letting go”, using Arms’ trademark blend of sad and emotional sounds with wry observations and clever turns of phrase to create guitar-drive indie pop that fulfils the dual motives of being fun and accessible but also interesting and strange. As the press release describes:

“The songs on Patterns are as keenly aware of their place in the continuum of wry, melancholic songwriters (the Cohens, Merritts, Wainwrights, and Stipes that Goldstein likes to cite) as they are willing to twist those conventions into odd, intriguing new shapes.”

The first single, ‘Keep it Light’, is the perfect example of what makes Arms so great. The instrumentation skips along at a fair tempo as Goldstein’s vocals drawl and drag along behind, the words worming their way into your head between the sparkling guitars and shimmering reverb and Devendorfian drum work. The song gathers in intensity in the latter half, lyrics pressing forward with urgency, as if the subliminal message in your new favourite pop song has grown tired of being so cryptic and decided to make itself heard.

If you have visited our site in the past few months, you will more than likely be familiar with Quiet Constant Friends, a literary-themed compilation in support of the global literacy Worldreader. If you want to read about the project in more detail, you can visit our original post from back in October.

Because we still have a fair amount of tapes left, and obviously want to raise as much as possible for Worldreader, we have decided to run a special holiday offer. So, as suggested below in stylised sans serif, entering the code ‘HOHOHO’ at the checkout on Bandcamp will get you a handsome 40% off both digital and physical copies of the compilation. This will still cover the production cost of the cassette, but remember all profits go to charity, so every extra pound you give will be a pound well spent. To refresh your memory, here’s what you’ll be getting if you put some of your hard earned cash towards Quiet, Constant Friends:

Another month has gone by! October was a bit swamped by our coverage of Quiet, Constant Friends, although we still managed to write about some absolutely great acts and albums. So have a listen to the player below and click the artist names in the tracklisting to be beamed straight to a review of the people in question.

On a related note, things are gradually getting busier for us in other areas – Liam works full-time and I’ve gone back to school – so the old two posts a day routine might not be maintained too often any more. That said, in an effort to keep things ticking over, we’re going to introduce a new ‘Flash Review’ feature where we cover albums in less words than we would otherwise use. It’s not ideal but a short piece is better than no piece. There’ll still be a good smattering of the usual style too.

Our benefit compilation Quiet, Constant Friends came out last weekend after a steady drip of tracks over the past few weeks. We didn’t reveal everything though, keeping one or two back to give us something to tell you about after Cassette Store Day had passed.

Surely you have all heard of ARMS? We have certainly mentioned them a few times. For the uninitiated, ARMS is Todd Goldstein, the ex-Harlem Shakes guitarist, and a variety of friends. We were honoured and delighted when Todd offered to record a version of ‘The Book of Love’ by The Magnetic Fields.

The book of love is long and boring
No one can lift the damn thing
It’s full of charts and facts and figures
And instructions for dancing

But I, I love it when you read to me
And you, you can read me anything

“Books are the quietest and most constant of friends; they are the most accessible and wisest of counsellors, and the most patient of teachers”

So says Charles William Eliot, and I tend to agree with him. And not just because I’ve thrown my lot in with the literary world. Books are where you learn that others share your weirdest thoughts and experiences, and are able to describe them in a way that makes you want to squee with delight or tattoo the words into your skin. What’s more, they let you experience life as someone else, allowing you to get a grip on the unseen forces which batter some while you relax in ignorant shelter. I can confidently say I would be a different person had I not become acquainted with John Singer and Don Gately and Ignatius J. Reilly, with JR from New York and Ruthie from Fingerbone and Oscar Wao from the Dominican Republic, now of Paterson, New Jersey. That’s without mentioning Esther Greenwood or Hazel Motes or the Glass family, nor Mr Small or Spot the Dog or any of the menagerie of Redwall mammals, ie. any of the hundreds of fictional folk who helped build the world as I now see it.

If, then, you cannot read, you automatically miss out on an army* of literary friends to entertain you and hold your hand and generally remind you that you are not alone. You may or may not know that UNESCO estimate there are 757 million adults, including 115 million youths (15-24), who cannot read or write the simplest of sentences. They even have a cool interactive map to give you a better idea of where the problem is biggest.

Worldreader is non-profit organisation dedicated to creating a literate world through digital education. Their Worldreader Mobile app (available on even the simplest feature phones) brings digital books to families around the planet, allowing communities without access to any print books to connect to a library of over 28,500 titles in over 40 languages. And this sort of programme extends far further than helping people gain basic skills. Take the current Ebola outbreak as an example. With such a deadly disease it can be difficult to provide adequate information to those in danger, particularly when moving around increases the risk of transmission and worsens the situation. Worldreader are utilising their mobile reading app to disseminate information to help save lives, from vital health advice to inspiring stories from survivors, while minimising the need for movement on the ground, and thus transmission.

Of course, all this ignores the whole special, reading-as-a-magic-activity side of things that Charles William Eliot was getting at. Books are fun and comforting and inspiring and door-unlocking in so many ways, and I believe quite firmly that increasing the number of young people reading is one of the best ways to deal with current issues and prepare ourselves for future ones. Worldreader actively curates books by African and Indian authors, so rather than just beaming the same dusty classics all over the world, they’ve developed a library representative of the diversity of interests, tastes and subjects seen around the globe. Better still, the mobile aspect will help transform education into an unstoppable force. No longer will your gender or religion or race prevent access to education, nor any disabilities, nor your social standing. With a small amount of help from charities like Worldreader, we can overcome privilege and prejudice by placing education in the hands of the people. We can be each other’s quiet, constant friends.

It’s all pretty inspiring. So much so that I decided to try to help with my own version of community and worldwide collaboration. Quiet, Constant Friends, a compilation of literary-themed songs by some of my favourite artists, will be sold in support of Worldreader, with every penny of the profits going straight into their good work. Some of the songs were recorded especially for this release, some are from upcoming albums and others are old favourites which fit nicely with the theme. You can listen to one new track, ‘I’m a Book on Tape’ by Lewtrakimou, right now:

As if collaborating with 20-odd acts wasn’t exciting enough, we’ve also enlisted the talents of a range of artists and illustrators to design special-edition postcards for each song. Again, I’ll be unveiling these as time goes on, but check out the piece for Lewtrakimou’s song by Ji Hyun Yu below:Huge, huge, huge thanks go out to everyone involved. It has been so great to see how nice and enthusiastic people can be about a simple idea, and how it can evolve into something much better than I ever expected. I owe you all.

Quiet Constant Friends is out now. You can buy it from our Bandcamp page, including a limited edition cassette, complete with some super-limited edition art postcard prints (you can browse the complete set of artworks here). We decided against having this as a free download in an attempt to raise as much for Worldreader as we possibly can. Obviously, if you choose to pay more than the suggested amount you are donating more to Worldreader, so feel free to do that. That said, we know times are tough, so if anyone wants a download, just drop us a message/tweet/email and we’ll sort you out, no questions asked.

* I’m taking suggestions for the best collective noun for friends who only exist in books.
