]]> Akron/Family are readying their seventh album, Sub Verses. The album art (which you can see above) was designed by Stephen O’Malley of Sunn O))). The band have released a couple of tracks in preview of the album, and both have me excited for the full release. ‘No Room’, the album’s opener, is seven brooding minutes of heavy psych-rock, punctuated with shamanistic chants and vocal harmonies. It really is the soundtrack to mind-bending desert rituals, to hallucinations around the bonfire. The second single, Until The Morning’ has a completely different vibe, recalling 2011’s S/T II: The Cosmic Birth and Journey of Shinju TNT. It still has countless layers of instrumentation and the group vocals, but is less pounding guitar riffs, more Animal Collective-style indie pop. The bad have also released a video for the track, which you can view below:

Sub Verses is scheduled for release on the 30th of April on Dead Oceans. You can pre-order it now on CD, LP, or in a beautiful deluxe bundle.

]]> The Suicide of Western Culture are a duo from the outskirts of Barcelona who are set to release their second album, Hope Only Brings Pain, on Irregular. Their self-titled debut was critically acclaimed in Spain (although I’ll hold my hands up and admit ignorance until a few days ago) and the follow up builds on it superbly well. Song titles such as ‘Hey, Guys! I Know The Name Of The Culprits’ and ‘Spanish Republican Soldiers In French Retirement Homes’ hint at something a bit different from the standard fare and the band deliver.

As the band name and verbose song titles suggest, Hope Only Brings Pain is an instrumental album that aims somewhere between post-rock stalwarts Mogwai and GSY!BE and chirpier electronic acts such as Animal Collective and Cut Copy. It’s either dancable post-rock or exceptionally dark and brooding dance music. The album refuses to settle into an identifiable rhythm, changing styles from track to track.  One moment it could be a popular festival hit and the next it could soundtrack some neon-drenched sci-fi dystopia, Hope Only Brings Pain is constantly morphing just when you think you have it pinned down and comparable to something else.

The album is scheduled to be released on 14th March, 2013 so keep an eye out for it.

]]> The Wandering Lake is Brian Kupillas from Fayetteville, Arkansas. His sound is a lovely mix of meditative ambience and experimental folk (bringing to mind a range of artists from Grouper to Fleet Foxes, Animal Collective to Meursault), capped with his superb vocal work. There is a cathartic element to it, in a lonely late night headphones kind of way, but also in a freaky psychedelic, shamanistic campfire sort of way (if that makes any sense, you’ll know what I mean when you listen). Kupillas himself describes the work as “about scaling back, and building a stronger self and immediate community around oneself”.

His Bandcamp page currently has two releases, last year’s In Passage and Ashame, which was released in April of this year. Both come highly recommended and are available on a pay-what-you-like download basis.
