Tender, the debut solo album by Colorado’s Allison Lorenzen on Whited Sepulchre Records was marked by “a transience which feels deeply compassionate,” as we described in our review. “Hope manifest as an understanding of the potential for change.” Follow-up single ‘The Fourth Cycle‘ continued this examination of change, detailing the gamut of emotional states involved with any upheaval, and latest track ‘MTO’ feels like the next step along the process. Described as sounding like a “final climax of a Mark Fisher-influenced hauntological prom scene,” the song looks to recognise the repeating patterns of the past so that Lorenzen might heal and move forward.

Bad Tiger – Enough

Last year, we described how Bad Tiger’s 2020 album The Goat and the Bad Tiger was “far from being the full realisation of [Yasi] Lowy’s goals,” but instead “merely opened the doors to new possibilities.” The San Francisco outfit are back with ‘Enough’, a new single which focuses on the precariousness of the present moment. With Lowy’s tender and confessional vocals, the track paints a vulnerable, open-hearted mood which longs for certainty within the painful fervour of love.

City Dress – Empires of Honey

“Music is for everyone who spent their childhoods obsessively reading the lyrics to their favorite songs.” That’s how Brooklyn‘s Christina Skramstad describes her folk pop project City Dress. Together with guitarist Johnny Simon Jr. (Wilsen), she writes lush and literary folk songs, which we last featured back in 2020. Fast forward a few years and City Dress is back with a new single, ‘Empires of Honey’, a rhythmic and resolute exploration of the self-deception involved in ego and boundless ambition. “The song is about standing at a crossroads and making decisions you imagine will bring you joy and contentment,” Skramstad describes, “but realizing that sometimes your wants and needs are misaligned.”

clay pigeon – Come Down

Having released an EP and album under his own name, Montreal-based songwriter James Clayton has now adopted the moniker clay pigeon for his new material. Clayton recently recorded the project’s debut album at Hotel2Tango with Howard Bilerman and Shae Brossard, and debut single ‘Come Down’ gives a glimpse into what to expect. A simmering blend of shadow and rhythm, where the understated mood grows taut as it progresses, threatening to snap into an all-out crescendo but never quite breaking its controlled progress.

Lael Neale – White T-Shirt

Following the release of her sophomore record Star Eaters Delight back in the spring, LA’s Lael Neale has released standalone single ‘White T-Shirt’, a take on one of her older songs that didn’t quite fit on the album. As producer Guy Blakeslee describes, “White T-Shirt’ dates back a number of years to when I used to follow Lael around LA to all of her barely publicized performances. The song never ceased to silence the chatter in the room…it’s a raw gem that stands alone and cuts through the noise” Blakeslee is not wrong. Clocking in at under two minutes, ‘White T-Shirt’ has an almost uncanny timeless quality, stripped back to guitar and Neale’s distinctive vocals

Left Tracks – Strawberry Moon

LA‘s Kabir Kumar (AKA Sun Kin) and Oakland‘s Phil Di Leo (DI LEO) first met in 2016, though it is only now they’ve decided to combine their skills. Enter Left Tracks, a brand new project that sees Kumar and Di Leo use all of their skills as composers, vocalists and multi-instrumentalists to imagine a new future in the wake of COVID and the adjacent catastrophes. What emerged was End Times Hauling, an EP which sits on the precipice of disaster but makes a decision to envisage a different world, working on the logic that no significant change can occur without first rekindling a sense of imagination. Opening track and single ‘Strawberry Moon’ introduces the left-field folk-inflected pop sound, as well as the compassion and collaboration which marks the release.

Nina Keith – Blow Up Yr Life (U Need To)

LA-based composer and multi-instrumentalist Nina Keith first caught attention in 2019 with MARANASATI 19111, an LP which decorated piano arrangements with a whole host of flourishes from flute to field recordings to better explore ideas of memory and death. With a tour opening for Youth Lagoon fast approaching, Keith has returned with ‘Blow Up Yr Life’, a single featuring Barrie and Qur’an Shaheed which again combines classical and contemporary styles to urge its audience to break from from their circumstances and live on their own terms. “Lately the more I wear the turmoil of my life on my sleeve the more often I find myself in conversations with strangers and loved ones that reach a similar end,” as Keith explains. “I can never be the one to tell someone to burn it down and start over. They see the ash stains on my shirt and ask to borrow a match so they can play with it, save it for later, but sometimes it’s like ‘girl, the house is already on fire, you can’t stay in there’.” Check out the visualizer by Nik Arthur below:

Ratboys – The Window

Later this summer, Chicago indie rockers Ratboys return with The Window, a brand new record via Topshelf Records. Having already released two singles – the epic ‘Black Earth, WI’ and expressive ‘It’s Alive’ – they have now unveiled the title track, an uber-personal song that forms the record’s emotional centre point. “I wrote that song a few days after the death of my grandma” explains lead Julia Steiner. “She didn’t have Covid, but because of the pandemic my grandpa wasn’t able to visit her in person at the nursing home to say goodbye. He ended up standing outside her room and saying goodbye through an open window.” It starts quiet and sober, but this is not your standard sad song. It soon kicks up a gear, becoming a country-tinged rock song that displays the Ratboys knack for combining tenderness with raucous noisy energy. Upper Narrows – Tinker’s Darn

Based in Portland, Maine, Upper Narrows is the recording project of songwriter and producer Tyler Jackson. Jackson’s process is an unusual one, swapping out drums and guitars for programmed beats and an array of synths. In October he will release While We’re Warm, the debut Upper Narrows full-length via Repeating Cloud, and debut single ‘Tinker’s Darn’ is our first taste of what to expect. A deep and spacey sound that balances its digital soundscape with a very human emotion, resulting in something as immersive as it is affirming, even if the lyrics hold a more conflicted view.

“A melodic journal recollecting my childhood and study guide to rebuilding the once broken foundation of my spiritual temple.” That’s how California’s Abraham Linkedin describes album New Castle. A collection of songs drawing on chillwave and hauntological styles to conjure the forgotten past and unrealised futures simultaneously. With its rich and textured tones overlaying the languid vocals, single ‘En Garde’ introduces the style, though New Castle’s true value is as a complete album.

Allison Lorenzen – Vale (feat. Midwife)

Back in November we wrote about Tender, an album by Allison Lorenzen on Whited Sepulchre Records. “A subversion of the traditional healing narrative,” as we described it. “A rejection of linear progress, an acknowledgement of the uneven topography of life.” Lorenzen has now teamed up with Jack Manzi’s Silver Island Studios for a series of videos, most recently for the single ‘Vale’ which sees her return to the mountains of Colorado. The landscape changes as Lorenzen walks the road, though quick cuts and close-up shots upend a simple sense of progression and speak to the song’s ethereal strangeness.

chemical club – Hell in a Heatwave

Ontario-based duo chemical club have made their name with a series of lo-fi bedroom pop releases, most recently following on from 2021 EP Arm’s Length with numerous singles on Arts & Crafts. The latest of these is ‘Hell in a Heatwave’, a subdued pop hit simmering beneath the surface with equal parts suffering and desire to change. The track takes “an honest look at who you are and how you can improve upon that,” the band explain. “Leaving unhealthy habits behind and holding yourself accountable for your own actions and behaviours.” Even if this requires a certain degree of discomfort in the immediate moment.

Faye – Teeth

Charlotte duo Faye are set to release their brand new record You’re Better on Self Aware Records, and latest single ‘Teeth’ gives an indication of the direction the band have taken since their self-titled EP. A building sense of energy, an escalation, the various elements spiralling in increasingly smaller circles like a spring coiling tighter and tighter, always threatening to explode. “I am the hand, you are the teeth,” sings Sarah Blumenthal, fighting to be heard above the descending noise.

Frankie Cosmos – One Year Stand

This autumn Frankie Cosmos will release Inner World Peace, their fifth full-length record via Sub Pop. In anticipation, the band (founding member Greta Kline, keyboardist Lauren Martin, guitarist/bassist Alex bailey and drummer Luke Pyenson) have released lead single ‘One Year Stand’, the album’s soft and patient centrepiece which proves the perfect introduction to a record which approaches existential questions of selfhood and quantum time with patience and kindness. The track comes complete with a video directed by Eliza Lu Doyle and starring Kline and Bailey. “It feels like an encapsulation of the record in that it’s strange and vast while also being contained and interior,” Kline explains. “Clowning and playing are a huge part of collaborating for me and Eliza. We wanted to perform a dance without dancing — the kind of movements you fall into in private, banal moments, playing without even realizing.”

Horatio James – they will have us

Led by singer songwriter James Gable, London‘s Horatio James write folk songs and then bend them into new and interesting shapes. New single ‘they will have us’ was written on bouzouki and takes elements of classic British folk and pop to create something that feels somehow both fresh and timeless. Gable is joined on the track by Marina Ritschel (vocals), Oli Fenton (drums) and Tristan Gable (electric guitar), fleshing out what could have been a hushed acoustic song into something dynamic and subtly infectious, an incense-scented indie pop song perfect for these long summer evenings.

Joyeria – Colour Film

Ahead of new EP FIM out via Speedy Wunderground this autumn, Canada-born, London-based project Joyeria have unveiled brand new single, ‘Colour Film’. A slacker rock gem that sits somewhere between David Berman and Nap Eyes. “‘Colour Film’ is about the mindless daily routine of being alive,” Joyeria explains. “What David Foster Wallace called ‘water’. I apparently have the ability to choose how I feel or think as I participate in being alive just as I can choose how I feel and think when I explain songs.” Of course it’s not as easy as Wallace might have intimated, something Joyeria highlights through his wry and volatile style. Tender Glue – Simple Boys

Tender Glue is the project of New York‘s Tom Gluewicki, who makes indie pop that spans the spectrum, from light and catchy to introspective and emotional. Latest single ‘Simple Boys’ sits at the breezy end of things, a summertime bop that pairs punchy percussion with laidback guitar and Gluewicki’s raw vocals. Lyrically, it’s a wryly humorous ode to the titular “simple boys”, those men who never really grow up and despite being annoying, just want the same simple things as everyone else.

Thanya Iyer – leave the room and face the waves

“Rest is in many ways a reflection of myself,” explains Thanya Iyer of her latest release on Topshelf Records. An EP which asks, “who am I when it all stops?” Following on from successful debut KIND, the collection finds Iyer amid the slowdown of the pandemic and removed from the communities of making and performing music. The obligatory isolation could be faced in a variety of ways, but Iyer chose to be embrace it and use it purposefully. A period in which to examine what it means to rest in our busy world. With its slinky, jazz-flavoured tones, single ‘leave the room and face the waves’ finds much richness within the quiet, even if dreams inevitably turn toward the outside world. Upchuck – Boss up

Based in Atlanta, punk five-piece Upchuck were brought together by “connections made in skateboarding, construction, and teenage delinquency.” Next month they will release their debut album Sense Yourself on Famous Class Records, a collection of what the label calls “haunting tales of discrimination, ignorance, and life in a doomed generation.” Lead single ‘Boss Up’ is indicative of the record as a whole, a slice of furious punk intended to empower and strengthen. As the press release continues “Only the wise and relentless will thrive in a revolutionized and radical world, and Upchuck is sternly feeding the fuel for a new gen.”

Where’s Beth – Come Inside

Based in New York, Where’s Beth creates a lush brand of folk able to weave intricate details into a seamless whole. Latest single ‘Come Inside’ is the perfect example, the gentle hushed tones belying the track’s underlying nuance, threads spun to hold the listener within a quiet space. “Come into my quiet,” implore the vocals, “there’s no one else there sometimes,” but by then we need no such offer. Young Jesus – Ocean

Though always orbiting around the distinctive ideas and lyricism of lead John Rossiter, the music of Young Jesus is always changing. Each new release has felt like a new attempt to get closer to essence of what they are trying to say. Different angles, a reframing of things, as though never quite satisfied the last record communicated as completely and efficiently as it might have hoped. Out via Saddle Creek later this year, latest album Shepherd Head is no different, Rossiter again reshuffling the pack and dealing a new hand. He weaves a fine patchwork crafted from found sounds as though life itself lie within its constituent parts. A tapestry both vulnerable and tender, where great loss and transcendence are not so different after all. First single ‘Ocean’ invites Tomberlin aboard, and you can watch the video directed by Stuart McClave below:

Beyond the McCarthyian desolation, something else stirs. The sense that, perhaps, the dark is not some adjacent threat, but the very space around us. Perhaps we’re already sitting in darkness, and our inability to flee is not a fearful reaction but a steadfast show of strength. If we’re already in the vale, or indeed are the vale itself, then thoughts can turn in a different direction. Be it hope of future illumination, or merely the knowledge that we can withstand such a space, and learn to live within it.

This complicated relationship between darkness and light is the cornerstone of Tender, Allison Lorenzen’s debut full-length on Whited Sepulchre Records. Written and recorded in the aftermath of a relationship, as well as her previous project School Dance, the album took shape in a strange moment for Lorenzen. Several of her life’s defining characteristics had been removed at once, leaving not only pain and sadness but a deteriorating sense of self. ‘Vale’ is representative of this liminal space. Shadow-veiled and vacant, dreamlike in its intangible swirl but no less heavy, its dark burden weighing on both spirit and mind.

But it is Lorenzen’s vulnerability within this milieu which truly informs the record. Consider the nuance of the title. Tender. Not tough. Easy to cut through. Sensitive to pain. But also warm, affectionate, kindly in outlook and gentle in action. This heightened receptivity and inclination for compassion repositions the vale from terminal nadir to just another milestone on a far longer path. Take ‘Chalk’, a song of movement and change which charts if not the impermanence of pain then at least its habit of fading with time. Jack Manzi’s video finds Lorenzen alone but empowered within a stark environment, aligning her own internal weather with that of the surrounding landscape, thus evoking its grand cycles and propensity for change no matter how severe the present moment.

The style is a subversion of the traditional healing narrative. A rejection of linear progress, an acknowledgement of the uneven topography of life. It’s this embrace of contradictions that allows the ethereal fondness of ‘In a Dream’ to be sandwiched between ‘Vale’ and the stricken ‘Afterthought’ with its needling unease. That allows too for the value of both solitude and company, for loving and being loved, for having both the confidence to walk one’s own path and the ability to submit to the grace of others when in need.

Tender might be a survey of Allison Lorenzen’s emotional journey, though it is less a complete map than an ongoing journal. Or perhaps a map that is so far incomplete, still in progress, drawn in situ and prone to change. The locations might reappear, be reimagined or given new names. Many have no name at all, just feelings judged in comparison to everywhere else. A transience which feels deeply compassionate, hope manifest as an understanding of the potential for change. A complete map would be a key to existence. A definite answer, a solution to life. Tender is not an answer, and this is its greatest strength.

Now Allison Lorenzen has returned with a second song, ‘Be a Fortress’, along with the news that it will join ‘VALE’ on a full-length record out via Whited Sepulchre Records later this year. Emerging from the liminal space between conclusions and new beginnings, the track is a break-up song in the strict definition of the style. The half-paced twirl and textured washes of the sound, the bittersweet intimacy of the delivery. The opening lines rooted in a kind of romantic melancholy. “This is the last time / so smile and walk away.”

But ‘Be a Fortress’ subverts the classic break-up aesthetic by changing the direction of address, altering the entire mood and coming to form a counterpoint to the darkness of ‘VALE’. Because the track is not an outward address to the now absent other, but rather an interior (re)commitment to the deep rooted convictions driving the whole situation. A song about “saying ‘no thank you’ to that which doesn’t serve me,” Lorenzen explains, “and to situations/people that aren’t actually a fit, and to stay connected with the deeper parts of myself where my truth and creativity reside.”

Written in the aftermath of both a romantic relationship and the School Dance project, ‘Be a Fortress’ steps beyond the minutiae of circumstance to present a mood more universal. One as applicable to one end as any other. The process of trusting oneself in order to live a life as truthful as any life might be.

This month saw the release of ‘VALE’, the first song Allison Lorenzen has released under her own name. Building upon and pushing beyond the School Dance style, the track embraces the stark and the mysterious, with Madeline Johnston (AKA Midwife) lending guitar and backing vocals to further deepen the sound. What results is a song that lives up to its title, a shadow space of glisten and reverb that is as ominous as it is alluring, daring the listener to peer over the edge into the dark depths beyond.

But as ‘VALE’ unfolds, a different perspective dawns. For beyond the McCarthyian desolation, something else stirs. The sense that, perhaps, the dark is not some adjacent threat, but the very space around us.
