Back in November, we featured ‘Way Inside’ by Best Fern, the collaborative project between New York’s Alexia Avina and Montreal’s Nick Schofield. “A track at once soaring and earthy,” as we put it, “the fecund mistiness eradicating any distinction between organic and dream matter.” It was the lead single from Earth Then Air, the debut Best Fern record which comes out early next month via Youngbloods and Backward Music, and the duo have now released second single ‘On and On’ to further whet our appetites.

Again living up to the record’s title, the new song is no less vivid. Its bright and curious tones straddle the divide between the natural and ethereal, and in doing so capture both the immediacy and timelessness of the natural world. “‘On and On’ is emblematic of our experience making this album,” Schofield explains. “For two weeks Alexia and I were making music in the woods surrounded by mountains and rivers writing new songs every day. We were so inspired by the environment around us and the beautiful instruments in our studio, totally immersed in sun, sound, nature and light—it all merged into the music.” What emerges feel like an ode this nurturing environment, and one which carries the suggestion that an immersion within such spaces can be a path through to some heightened state of being.

In the rolling water I would rather dip my head
caught up in the light of the sun and the sound of it
On and on and on and on

Best Fern – Way Inside

Best Fern is the ambient pop collaboration between New York’s Alexia Avina and Montreal’s Nick Schofield. The pair met while in residence at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, where they drew on the surrounding Rocky Mountain landscape to devise a style that sits in the ethereal middle ground between ambient and pop. The debut Best Fern album, Earth Then Air, releases early next year on Backward Music and Youngbloods, and lead single ‘Way Inside’ is an indicator of what is to come. A track at once soaring and earthy, the fecund mistiness eradicating any distinction between organic and dream matter. The song comes complete with a video directed & edited by Hugo Bernier. Watch it below:

Earth Then Air releases on 3rd February via Youngbloods. Preorder it now via the Best Fern Bandcamp page.

CO-ED DORMS – Milk Drinker

Part of what they call the “Neo-Classical Post-Industrial Post-Punk Revival,” English four-piece CO-ED DORMS have shared new single ‘Milk Drinker’ as a statement of intent. A finely crafted track which grasps for a number of stylistic influences, the lush instrumentation held in line by almost marching percussion, while the near spoken-word vocals are sardonic and playful and wry. Think Black Country, New Road fronted by Mark E. Smith, this time sponsored by Big Dairy. Drink the damn milk.

Cynthia Hamar – Where Your Love Lives

Back in June, we wrote about Alberta-born Métis singer-songwriter Cynthia Hamar, labelling single ‘Shaken’ as “a track which finds a balance between soulful confidence and poignant sadness, led by the kind of bitter assurance gained only from learning the hard way.” Again out via Neon Moon Records, latest track ‘Where Your Love Lives’ is no less mature and reflective in its tone, taking a nostalgic look at the past in all its bittersweet glory. Charting the things gained and lost along the way, and the slow change constantly unfolding. The song’s video furthers this excavation of bygone years, with director Korban Hamar and editor Jessica Lowe creating a collage of home videos from Hamar’s family collection.

‘Where Your Love Lives’ is out now via Neon Moon Records and you can listen in the usual places.

Dunebug – Still Dreaming

Now based in London, Dunebug is the project of Manchester-born Chi Limpiroj. Regular readers will be familiar with her work as we’ve covered a couple of singles in the last few years which, along with a self-titled EP released in 2019, have established a distinctively bittersweet lo-fi indie pop style. Now Dunebug has returned with a new single, ‘Still Dreaming’, the latest release ahead of a forthcoming debut album. Limpiroj describes ‘Still Dreaming’ as “a song about being afraid to sleep due to recurring nightmares of an abusive past lover,” but despite this heavy subject matter it’s presented as a surprisingly sweet laidback pop song. The track comes complete with a contradictorily bright video by Alyssa Mello, which you can check out below:

‘Still Dreaming’ is out now and available from the Dunebug Bandcamp page.

Esme White – Pearly Gate Crashers

Hailing from New York and now based in London, singer-songwriter Esme White started writing during the early months of the pandemic and has worked with Spiritual Records in Chalk Farm on new tracks. Single ‘Pearly Gate Crashers’ is a great introduction to White’s sound, an infectiously upbeat folk rock track with real narrative weight. God is real but heaven is closed, great crowds gathering at the gates demanding to be let in. Shady snakes in suits bribe angels for backdoor entries as old ladies threaten to burn the whole thing down, the rhythm building as a sense of desperation grows.

Yeah I may be human
but that’s not on me, that’s on you, man

‘Pearly Gate Crashers’ is out now. You can find Esme White on Instagram.

LIES – Camera Chimera

The new project of Mike and Nate Kinsella, LIES have won attention with a string of singles which combine beauty and strangeness into something fitting for the contemporary moment. Latest track ‘Camera Chimera’ further develops this style, an exploration of life online which starts out seductively mellow and soon morphs into something dark and unnerving. “It’s about not only feeling manipulated by others, but also being confronted with the reality and consequences of your own lies and manipulation,” Mike Kinsella explains, “and how that can mentally and emotionally cause one to spiral.” The song comes with a video directed by Rachel Cabbit of POND Creative which furthers these themes, amplifying the mood of shadowy mystery by printing and scanning frames to produce a distorted, lo-fi style.

‘Camera Chimera’ is out now via Polyvinyl Record Co. and available from the usual places.

Mizan K – Go

‘Go’ is the latest single from New York’s Mizan K, an effortless pop song that bubbles with quiet energy that she describes as a “four-minute fever-dream inspired by fragments of fantastical children’s novels.” Built on an infectious melody and adorned with quirky embellishments, the track is a strange, kaleidoscopic commentary on our hyperactive, money-focused world. As Mizan K goes on to explain: “A dozen celestial characters including myself, float in a space-casino and chase their fate in a speedy and unstable world. The singer (me) is a trickster, presenting glimmers of opportunity, then changing voices to relay worldly wisdom and warnings of failure. The song winds its way through a frantic universe while angling towards fun and optimism.”

Go by Mizan K
‘Go’ is out now via the Mizan K Bandcamp page.

My Politic – Cursing at the Night & the Morning

Next month, Nashville-based duo My Politic will release Missouri Folklore: Songs & Stories From Home, an album grounded in the landscape of the Ozark Mountains which looks to explore the nuanced and often conflicted identities of those who call Missouri home. “There are songs about judgment, existentialism, forgiveness, love, death, growing, and healing,” as Kaston Guffey explains. “It’s a lot of material focused on the nuance and mundanity, in some sense, of being a person.” Latest single ‘Cursing at the Night & the Morning’ captures this spirit of imperfection with a keen eye and careful charm, steeped in the wistful ache of all the best folk music but choosing to confront this nostalgia too.

What I know and what I’ve heard
Are different things I’m sure
But the differences all blur
Cuz time’s a warping glass

Siv Jakobsen x Ane Brun – Sun, Moon, Stars

With new album Gardening coming next January on The Nordic Mellow, Oslo songwriter Siv Jakobsen has unveiled latest single, ‘Sun, Moon Stars’. With Jakobsen joined by renowned Norwegian songwriter Ane Brun, the track weaves a plaintive mood scored with careful details and evocative harmonies. An ode to the people who stand steadfast through the worst moments, reliable points which allow us to navigate our own ways through. The song is “inspired by my least favourite month of the year and the heaviness I tend to feel during it,” as Jakobsen explains, “as well as the beauty and hope I’ve found in a companion that has the ability to pull me out of the dreariest corner of my mind, even during the darkest month of the year.”

Gardening is out on the 20th January via The Nordic Mellow.

AGAAMA – In This Life

Back in August we wrote about ‘Sarehole Mill‘, the debut single from EP Wandering Worlds by Birmingham-based artist, composer, producer and singer-songwriter AGAAMA. It was a song, we described, “rooted in physical place but also the psyche of the individuals and collectives with pass through it, carrying with it all those people’s energies and anxieties.” Now out via The state51 Conspiracy, the EP continues this examination of spaces, gradually moving from a place of uncertainty to one of love. With its patient intimacy, closer ‘In This Life’ completes this journey, drawing a line between healing and empowerment, championing the healing of wounds as the path to more fully becoming oneself.

Alexia Avina – Let This Die

Fresh off the back of recent album A Little Older on Lost Map Records, Alexia Avina returns this month with a brand new EP, Crush. Focused on vulnerability and smallness, the previous record probed at tender spots we might usually ignore or protect, choosing to sit and contemplate pain instead. But Crush emerges from the aftermath of this period. A fresh start where new feelings germinate and sprout through the ground. Composed entirely of synths, the result is something freer, more fun, ready to give itself over to joy and desire, even while understanding such emotions might only stay for a fleeting moment. Check out the video for lead single ‘Let This Die’ below, shot, directed and edited by Sara Laufer.

Alicia Clara – I Let My Plant Die

Following last year’s EP Outsider/Unusual, Montreal-based dream pop artist Alicia Clara returns this month with a new four song release. Titled Velveteen, the EP is something of a message to her teenage self, and finds Clara at her most assured, combing confident musicianship with impressionistic and introspective lyrics that display an admirable vulnerability. Latest single ‘I Let My Plant Die’ was written on the pandemic’s one year anniversary and is full of both yearning for “normal” life and gentle self-admonishment for living passively and taking small things for granted. “The inspiration behind the title came from three baby plants I inadvertently let die when I left my apartment to go stay with family outside of Montreal in March 2020, thinking I’d be back in the city come April,” Clara explains. “I recognized a parallel between this and a tendency I have to put off tackling tasks or situations that scare me, thinking time will do the work on its own.” Check out the video directed and shot on the Swiss-French border by Alix Bortoli below:

Brody Price – It Was You

Later this month, Dallas artist Brody Price will release his latest album Win a Trip to Palm Springs! On Niles City Records. Price refers to his style (only semi sarcastically) as “doom country,” a tag which goes some way to capturing the record’s blend of folk, country, noise and sludge. The album’s second single, ‘It Was You’ exists on the gentler end of the spectrum but still captures the wider tension and stormy atmosphere which mirrors the lyrics’ exploration of the turbulence of life. Price is joined by Robert Ellis (piano) and Andy Baxter (vocal harmonies), who together create a folk song that, despite its twang and gentle melodies, actual explores the difficulties we all face and sometimes try to hide. “This song is about being aware of my own internal turmoil and realizing that everyone has the same thing in some form or fashion,” Price explains. “Even if someone may appear to have it all together, you still can’t tell what’s racing through their mind when they lay awake at night.”

Doctor Delia – Whoa

Based in Portland, Oregon, Doctor Delia is a self-described “entity specializing in tinctures, alchemical transubstantiation, and old-time new-time music.” We first featured their work last summer, when we reviewed Parlor Songs, a collaborative album with Mother Juniper that we described as possessing “an intangible sense of homespun communal spirit.” Their latest release is Sunroom Vloop // Whoa, a double single which again takes a traditional instrument (here the violin) and creates something that feels both fresh and somehow timeless. ‘Sunroom Vloop’ is a bright and playful expression of the titular sunroom, all clear warm air and vivid reflections, while ‘Whoa’ is a violin loop altogether more mystical. “If you listen closely you can hear a great Spirit moving through the bones of the violin,” Doctor Delia describes. “It is my spirit; it is more than what I can put into words. So I play.”

Sunroom Vloop // Whoa is out now and available via the Doctor Delia Bandcamp page.

ghost orchard – rest

This November sees the release of rainbow music, the new album from ghost orchard on Winspear. The project of Grand Rapids, Michigan’s Sam Hall, ghost orchard has made its name with a distinctively sincere blend of folk and electronic styles, and their latest record develops this aesthetic further. A picture of calm and patience amid loss, where the quiet stillness holds the latent warmth of things now gone. New single ‘rest’ is the perfect introduction, its palpable, physical details holding something less tangible too. As though the world itself mourns that which is lost, and the correct arrangement of objects might summon it back once more. Watch the video by Nik Arthur below:

rust on its bearings
scars intermingled

and like the moon still crests as its’ hue ruminates
like thick smoke fills the room
and brings you back again

Greta O’Leary – Body, Now

Written during an autumnal drive through the mountains of the South Island, ‘Body, Now’ is the latest single from Aotearoa folk artist Greta O’Leary. It’s a delicate, careful track which places the body into this context of the environment, charting its subtle changes in the face of grief in the manner one might watch the seasons pass across a landscape. But for all its isolation and heartbreak, the song emerges as a balm against outside forces. A return to the self as not only a mode of protection, but a way in which to reconnect with the most fundamental of things.

Hang Linton x LeBron Aggressive – SALE

The work of Leeds-based interdisciplinary artist Hang Linton has been described as “a rebellion against clean aesthetics,” his work across music, performance, video and installation inspired by time spent amid countercultural collectives in Berlin. Debut single ‘SALE’ sees Linton enlist the talents of LeBron Aggressive for a synth-based meditation on consumerist culture, the catchy and playful sound simmering underneath sardonic lyrics. Essentially repurposing the strategy of advertisements to send the attack in the opposite direction. A crystal clear message dressed up with shiny adornments. “Discounts on discounts but don’t discount the fact,” as Linton sings. “We bought it all for cheap, with the sweat off someone else’s back.”

Kierst – Phone Call

South Carolina raised, Brooklyn-based songwriter Kierst has a new EP, Thud, coming next month on Sad Club Records, and latest single ‘Phone Call’ sets the tone for the release. A reflection on longing and self-worth which owes as much to Grouper and Mazzy Star as it does contemporary bedroom pop, the intimate vocals and pressing rhythm lifted by an ethereal soundscape, resulting in a mood which transcends the immediate pain for heartbreak. “I think it’s important to know how to sit with yourself, and not depend so much on romantic fulfilment, Kierst explains of the track. “You can only be as good to someone else as you can be to yourself, and the song’s about knowing when to respect that.”

Platonic Sex – Exhausted Competing For You

Meanjin/Brisbane outfit Platonic Sex are gearing up to release a brand new EP this November, and latest single ‘Exhausted Competing For You’ gives further indication of what to expect from the four-piece. The single is a track based around the tensions of a mismatched relationship, where the initial rush of excitement has dissipated and issues of compatibility are brought into relief. The temptation to persevere in the face of such doubts is clear, but struggling to make things work comes at a cost. “It’s exhausting to keep something alive for the sake of fighting for it,” says lead Bridget Brandolini, a realisation which becomes apparent across the song, its energy picking up into an affirming catharsis.
Puck – Best Friend

Having cut her teeth touring in the bands of SZA, dhruv and Maggie Rogers, Puck might have already announced themselves as keyboardist, but upcoming debut album Best Friend feels like a proper introduction. The record draws upon a childhood immersed in Seattle’s grunge and alt-rock scene but reaches out toward folk and jazz too. A highly personal blend used to conjure the experience of love but also violence, ultimately directing its energies into processing trauma and grief within a society seemingly arranged to reinforce such phenomena. “I wanted it to be catchy enough for the words to sneak under people’s skin,” Puck explains of the title track. “I didn’t really have much music to heal by, so I made some.”

As we described in a preview last month, the latest album of Queens-based musician Alexia Avina began with a borrowed guitar in a small German town on the floor of a friend’s room. These early ideas developed into songs which would eventually stitch together into A Little Older, out now via Lost Map Records. This slow, natural development feels intrinsic to the sound itself. A collection of songs which came into being across a span of years, encompassing a variety of periods and locations yet linked by a continuing line of questioning. “What does it mean to feel small, to feel nothing, to feel everything?” as the album notes ask. “To skirt around the edge of true vulnerability unknowingly and yet somehow so consistently?”

A Little Older feels less like an answer than an extended contemplation of the question. A period of time spent sitting with it, exploring its various depths and contours, even as the potential answer changes or begins to feel nothing like an answer at all. “Am I alright or almost there?” asks patient opener ‘Step in Line’. “All that I am, all that I’m not / Am I too bright, or almost there?” This searching tone is indicative of a record in which doubts and convictions intertwine, rising and fading at any given moment. One, as the title suggests, too wise to expect a single epiphany to solve everything. “I’m not hoping for a saviour,” as ‘Forgotten Angle’ puts it. “I’m only sifting through what’s given / An earthly bind or something bitter.”

In this manner, the album should be viewed as a space in which Avina works through this process, rather than the process itself. Songs like the slow dawning ‘I Am Opening’ and reflective ‘Way Things Grow’ clock in at well over seven minutes apiece, long, unhurried tracks which invite the listener to sit still and take part. Free them from the need to do anything else.

This mindful style is present in other ways too. Though possessing an edge and far more succinct, songs like ‘Human’, ‘Poison’ and the title track offer awareness in a different manner. A consciousness of feelings and desires, an acknowledgement of needs and wants. And also a recognition of shortcomings and regrets so that the questioning might continue despite misgivings within any specific time. “How can I learn the way to show / All that matters when I’ve barely grown,” as closer ‘How Can I learn’ puts it. “I’m better than this but I’m battered / Embarrassed by something I missed in the moment.”

Alexia Avina – I Am Opening

Following 2020 album Unearth on Topshelf Records, Brooklyn-based artist Alexia Avina is set to return with a brand new LP, A Little Older. Released via Lost Map Records, the album began on a borrowed guitar and a friend’s floor, slowly blossoming into a deep and searching meditation on the existential functions of love and art. “What does it mean to feel small, to feel nothing, to feel everything?” asks the album notes, “to skirt around the edge of true vulnerability unknowingly and yet somehow so consistently?” Clocking in at over eight minutes, slow-burning single ‘I Am Opening’ shows that while Avina might not have an answer, her rich and evocative compositions create spaces in which to contemplate such questions.

A Little Older by Alexia Avina
A Little Older is out on the 29th April and you can get it from the Alexia Avina Bandcamp page.

The Bins – Santa Cruz Mountains (Remix by Danny Spiteri)

Last summer, The Bins released the album Happiness Complete, a stellar collection of songs which showed off Clark Barclay’s joyous plunderphonic style. But as if his own endlessly inventive cut and paste experiments weren’t ambitious enough, Barclay then turned over his sonic mosaics to other artists and asked they rework them into new forms. The result is Happiness Completely Remixed, an entire album of these reimaginings. Danny Spiteri’s take on ‘Santa Cruz Mountains’ is emblematic of the power of such processes, rendering the originally buoyant track into something reflective and subdued. A meditation on place which excavates not just the sunny present but the ghosts of the past too.

Dawning – Demo Tape

After fronting post-folk Apricot Blush, South Carolina’s Jackson Wise has emerged from a musical hiatus with brand new project, Dawning. A collaboration with artist and musician Matt Massara, the outfit work between brooding punk and gauzy slowcore, the tracks united by the texture of their style. Soundscapes that drift over you, invite you to lose yourself inside. The debut release Demo Tape shows off this aesthetic, from the frustrated yells of ‘We All Went Swimming’ and the searing energy of ‘Kreuzberg’ to the searching melancholy of ‘Sediment’. Each of the six songs feels like a door through which the Dawning project might head, and Demo Tape has more than enough to suggest you would be advised to follow whichever they choose.

Demo Tape is out now.

Dead Nettle – Undertow

The recording project of Nashville/California artist Lindsey Wall, Dead Nettle is set to release album How I Thought later this year. With its slow burning intensity, single ‘Undertow’ introduces the engaging and poetic style the record promises to bring. Opening with acoustic strums and smoky vocals, it builds from wistful warmth to fierce conflagration, finding a sound which engages with emotional turmoil yet finds buoyant energy within the roil. As though the updrafts of the burn lift Wall high above the situation, floating high and free if only for a moment.

Denitia – Highways

Raised in Houston and currently living in New York’s Hudson Valley after time spent in Nashville and Brooklyn, Denitia is an artist often on the move. New song ‘Highways’ embraces this nomadic spirit while recognising the value of connection too. An ode to the road which is nevertheless unwilling to leave home behind. “‘Highways” is a song about looking forward but taking the past along with you,” Denitia explains. “I’ve had many friends and loved ones in my life and as time passes and I move from place to place, phase to phase, I hope to always take those connections with me wherever I go. I want to take home with me everywhere I go.”

Itch Princess – To Be Your Fool

The recording project of New York‘s Katelyn Farstad, Itch Princess make self-described psycho-existential-dredge ballads which wrestle with the various torments of human living. Latest record POP CALLS PASSES, out now via Crass Lips Records, was written at the end of an eighteen-year struggle with substance abuse, and directs all of its ambition and energy to communicating the move beyond suffering into a more creative space. Single ‘To Be Your Fool’ is the perfect introduction to the record’s off-kilter vibe, capturing its embrace of left-field oddness symbolic of a wider acceptance of life and its unpredictable motion.

Marissa Nadler – Cold Wind Blowin’

This spring sees the release of Todo Muere SBXV, a compilation celebrating fifteen years of Sacred Bones which asks artists from across their roster to cover one another’s songs. With songs from Anika, The Hunt, Dean Hurley, Black Marble, Hillary Woods and others, the result is a testament to the diverse and ambitious line-up the label has built over a decade and a half. A group linked not by clear style or genre but something more oblique. A shared commitment to artistic vision, whatever shape that might take. A great example is Marissa Nadler‘s take on ‘Cold Wind Blowin’ from David Lynch‘s The Big Dream, a version which understands the twin forces of familiarity and strangeness which underpin Lynch’s work and treats each with the reverence they deserve.

Todo Muere SBXV is out via Sacred Bones on the 27th May and you can pre-order it from Bandcamp.

Pacing – Sunny <3

Combining the twin forces of anxiety and sarcasm, Katie McTigue uses Pacing to explore the busy and oftentimes ridiculous period we find ourselves inhabiting. Ahead of new mixtape hatemail later this spring, McTigue has unveiled lead single ‘Sunny <3’ to get us acquainted with her distinctively sardonic style. Because do not be fooled by the title, or at least be sure to excavate its wry connotations, as this FOMO anthem does not find joy or self-actualisation at the end of a productively jammed day. Just creeping panic as the pressure to be better and better coils like a spring. “I’m gonna be good,” goes the tongue-in-cheek refrain. “I’m gonna be so good.”

hatemail is out on the 13th may and you can pre-order it from the Pacing Bandcamp page.

This Frontier Needs Heroes – Not Gonna Write a Song

Following on from 2021’s Go With the Flow, the fifth album from David Bradley Lauretti’s This Frontier Needs Heroes, this spring sees the project return with a new song series titled Every Song is a Single. The first taste of this new material comes with the ironically titled ‘Not Gonna Write a Song’, a wry take on a break-up number which sees Lauretti break his own promise in real time. A song about resisting the urge to write. But despite this playful humour, the sound itself commits to a subdued warmth. Earnest and reflective, caught between looking back and moving on. Lauretti is gonna continue to write songs, and the world is all the better for it.

Take what you have to take
And I’ll break what I have to break
I know that it’s not a mistake
So I’m not gonna write a song for you
