British Columbian songwriter Aidan Knight is set to follow-up his brilliant albums Versicolor and Small Reveal with a third, as of yet unnamed album coming this fall. Produced by Marcus Paquin and mixed by Mathieu Parisien, the LP will be released on Canadian label Outside Music. Details are pretty scarce but you can listen to the first single, ‘The Arp’, right now. Near-seven minutes in length, it starts off as a smooth and kinda groovy soft rock track which threatens several crescendos before the horned-filled celebratory climax around the halfway mark. “What a life I have lived,” Knight sings, “Can I live it again?” But the song has not burned out, remaining as a glowing ember for a further minute before sparking back into life for the closing stretch, a swirling dream of guitars and wordless vocals which ebb and flow until the end.

The album will be out sometime this Autumn on Outside Music. We’ll bring you more as and when we get it. In the meantime, Knight featured on this mix of Canadian music we made with the ever-reliable HI54LOFI, so why not give that a spin?

To celebrate Canada Day, we have joined forces with the excellent HI54LOFI to make a mixtape of pine-scented artists. We each picked 20 of our favourite songs from Canadian authors to make the double-sided mixtape you can see below.

We had originally planned for 15 songs each but found it was too difficult to fit in all the artists we felt needed to be included and decided to go with 20 each. Luckily, HI54LOFI included some of our favourites and I think we had some of his on ours, so we helped each other out a bit.

Granted, there are far more than 40 noteworthy Canadian artists out there and there were some hard decisions. Any disappointed acts crying into their maple syrup or taking out frustrations on their teamates on the ice, please don’t despair, there is always next year.

We hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoyed making them. These songs certainly haven’t helped banish our romantic view of Canada.

Folly & The Hunter are an indie rock band from Montreal. They have recently signed to Outside Records (home to artists/acts such as Black Mountain, Little Scream, Leif Vollebekk and The Besnard Lakes – more on whom later) and have just released their second album, Tragic Care (a follow up to 2011’s Residents).

The album was produced by Jace Lacek (of the aforementioned The Besnard Lakes – who coincidentally also have a new album, Until In Excess, Imperceptible), and offers an intriguing mix of indie rock, folk and post-rock style atmospherics. Recorded and mixed in just twelve days, Tragic Care was inspired by a year of loss and heartache, lyrically dealing with the emotional fallout involved in coming to terms with loss and rejection. It’s certainly not all doom and gloom though, there are definite chinks of light and hope. It’s a bittersweet record. Check out Moth In The Porch Light in the player below:

You can buy the album now via Outside Music, or download a deluxe version via iTunes (deluxe version includes a cover of Hiver Mile-End by Québécoise singer-songwriter Ariane Moffatt). The band are also about to join Aidan Knight on a tour of Canada, check the dates here.

Small Reveal is the second album from British Columbian singer-songwriter Aidan Knight. The catch is that on the new album he can no longer really be considered a singer-songwriter at all as his bandcamp now describes the term “Aidan Knight” as the namesake of an experimental folk quintet. The notes on the page list eight other musicians who contributed to the album, and the presence of this backing band sees a marked departure from the gentle folk stylings of Knight’s debut, 2010’s Versicolour. This transformation is evident from the get-go, opener ‘Dream Team’, starts as a familiar gentle folk song but erupts into full blown indie rock at the five minute mark. The rest of the album straddles the line between folk and rock and also contains three instrumental tracks (Figures I, II and III). Album closer ‘Margaret Downe’ is a return to hushed folk and beautifully tells the story of an ill-fated relationship. It is an triumph of songwriting and makes me very interested to see where Knight goes from here. As a bonus check out the track played fully acoustic in a video courtesy of Vancouver Is Awesome and Amazing Factory Productions (which was brought to my attention by the ever-brilliant Slowcoustic).

The album is available for purchase over at Bandcamp and comes highly recommended.
