House Plants – Fluffy Tales EP

House Plants are a lo-fi pop band from south London. Their debut release, an EP called Fluffy Tales, has recently been put out by the fine folks over at online radio station / indie cassette label Fresh Juice. We were fans of Fresh Juice’s debut compilation release earlier this month and tape number 2 continues the run of form, House Plants’ (formerly Tilapia) psych-tinged slacker rock vibes bringing an easy, sunny vibe to the wet and windy British winter. This welcome warmth may be in part due to the fact that the EP was mixed in LA by Adam Lasus (who has worked with fellow Londoners Happyness, as well as some genre heavyweights including Yo La Tengo and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah).

Opener ‘Aeroplane’ throws in some fuzzy shoegaze elements and impassively lazy-sounding vocals, resulting in a garage rock number that will undoubtedly appeal to fans of slacker rock vibes of 80N7.

‘Fluffy Tails’, the not-quite title track, has a similarly summery feel, beginning with a slow tropical wooze before shifting into something louder and more dynamic. Things get dreamier on ‘Romantic Lights’, a warm and pink-hued psych pop track, before the EP closes with ‘Under the Moon’ and it’s strange and surreal lyrics:

“There’s a terrapin up on the moon
there are terrible things upon the moon
whats the use of the moon, of the moon?
there’s fuck-all to do up on the moon
there’s a shopping mall up on the moon
whats the use of the moon, of the moon?”
