We’ve shared a couple of singles from songwriter Yoshika Colwell‘s debut full-length On The Wing, coming this July via Blue Flowers, in recent months, with both ‘There’s Got To Be A Loser Babe‘ and ‘A Poem About Walking’ delving into the ethereal potential of folk in order to better elucidate real life experiences. The latter track “embodi[ed] the compassion and self-acceptance of this endeavour,” we wrote in our preview, “finding its subject at the rock bottom of a troubled relationship though still holding onto small embers of possibility. The hope, that is, to achieve a more fulfilling and healthy existence, even if it means passing through a period of solitude and reflection in order to map out its shape.”
Described by Colwell as “the most hopeful song on the album,” latest single ‘In Bloom’ continues this style, searching for encouragement in the unlikeliest of places. “’In Bloom’ is a song exploring the concept of sunny nihilism,” as Colwell explains, “which I read about once somewhere. It’s about acknowledging that everything ends, but trying to find the beauty and freedom in that.” Hence a track full of bright bounce and forward motion that neverthless concerns the inescapable truths of mortality. Yet one played not for black humour or wry irony but rather as a reminder why we cling onto life in the first place.
