dani mack – Someday

dani mack is the moniker of Lubbock, TX-born songwriter Baylee Barrett. After moving to Los Angeles to pursue her career in music, Barrett’s talents won the attention of a Grammy-nominated producer’s label. Unfortunately broken promises and an over-bearing attitude soured the relationship, with only one song released across a three-year period and everything else shelved, leaving Barrett disillusioned with the exploitative power structures of the music industry.

Now fully autonomous, Baylee has teamed with Future Gods to release her first single in two years and the inaugural one as dani mack. Fittingly, the song takes its name from the first song she wrote. “I wrote this new single, ‘Someday’ (2.0), while my first real relationship was falling apart,” Barrett explains. “It was very toxic, but despite all the signs, my naivety gave me hope that things would turn around. If I’m being completely honest, this song was a last-ditch effort to save this relationship… It didn’t work out.”

The song is the perfect introduction to the dani mack phase of Baylee Barrett’s career, and a real indication of the depth of her work. Along with bandmate Chris Reagan and some mixing help from Greg Uhlmann (Perfume Genius, Hand Habits), Barrett weaves a careful balance between strength and vulnerability, its bright and disarmingly straightforward sound staring the past straight in the eye and refusing to blink.
