Britt is the recording project of Houston’s Brittany Johnson. Kill the Man is the debut Britt EP, six mature pop songs that label Poison Moon Records say “reflect on external constraints – social expectations and familial pressures – and internal restraints – insecurities and self-imposed limitations.”
After the half-minute intro of ‘Out’, ‘Crisco’ rises from gauzy atmospherics into a smart and slick indie pop song, galloping drums propelling wiry guitar and Johnson’s distinctive vocals. There’s a collision of indie pop and post punk on ‘Middle Man’, a track that feels at once fluttery and frustrated, capturing the promise and pain that comes with complex relationships, while ‘Handle It’ is powered from within, dynamic percussion pumping below underwater guitar and Johnson’s earnestly delivered vocals. Closer ‘Trial Period’, the record’s lead single and perhaps the EP’s standout, is a bittersweet guitar pop song that’s part sunny jangle, part yearning ache.
